This guide has been put together as a starting point for your search. We hope you find it helpful as you navigate through the plethora of choices available.

Choosing an International School List of International Schools

What does your child want to be when they grow up?

As parents, we want the best possible start for our children through learning, play and family life. Choosing the right school for your child is a momentous decision – will they be a social butterfly or a quiet reader? Will they thrive in academic studies or will they need a little more support from the teachers? Will they be creative and artistic or a studier and analytic?

In this second edition of our Guide to International Schools, we take a deep dive into some of the best schools on offer to help you as parents to make an informed decision.

There is much to consider, including:

• Admissions process or waitlists

• Curriculum

• Population

• Exam results and alumni success

• Language options

• Facilities

• Fees

• School culture

• Student : teacher ratio

• Class sizes

• Holidays and term dates

• Teaching hours

• Location and transportation options

• Healthcare policies

Parents should expect to pay for registration and/or a deposit, term/ semester fees and additional costs such as uniforms, transportation, insurance and facilities fees. The quality of facilities in today’s international schools reflects the fees charged, with continued investment in the latest technology, equipment and expansion of school facilities.

A comprehensive list of international schools with website links for further information can be found on the opposite page. As a next step, we recommend contacting your preferred school(s) to participate in one of their regular Open Days for prospective families.

“AIS provides a well-rounded environment for our children to develop from structured learning to social development in a truly first world environment. The teachers are specialists in their field, with warm hearts that immediately connected with our children. Our children get exposed to Mandarin which we would not have been exposed to back home. The facilities at AIS are amazing, everything I want for my children. From day one our children always felt comfortable and welcome at AIS, many days it is a struggle to get them to go home.”

Amelia Woodward, Year 12 graduate and top achieving IB student

“I couldn’t believe it when I opened the email offers from Stanford and Oxford. It’s thrilling to think that this year I’ll be studying Bioengineering and Biochemistry at one of these amazing places. Thank you AIS for letting me delve into my academic and extracurricular interests, allowing me take risks as well as make brilliant friends. Here at AIS is where I fell in love with maths and the sciences, and here I hold some of my greatest memories.”

Sophie Russell, Year 11 student

“The things I enjoy most about going to AIS is that there is always new people coming from all around the world and that the community is very welcoming towards all different cultures. I also really enjoy the fact that AIS caters to all different types of students whether they are more academic, arts or sports focused our school has the programs, facilities and teachers to help the students reach their fullest potential in their own areas.”

“From the moment we stepped foot on Blue House soil for our introductory tour, we knew it was the place we wanted to send our son to nursery school. The beautiful environment makes every day a joy to arrive and drop him off, amongst the lush foliage and happy and kind faces of the teachers and Blue House staff.

Not only do we feel 100% confident that our child will be loved and nurtured each day, we also know that every time he attends Blue House, his mind is challenged and developed in a way that is consistent with our family values. Whether that be through learning how to appreciate his environment, to care for his friends and teachers, or to create art, projects and music through a variety of mediums. We are grateful for every day he has at Blue House.”

Testimonials

Justin and Nicola , parents of Miyu , Hana and Jasper, 6, 4 and 2 years old, Pre-Nursery, Preschool and Alumni

“Our Bluehouse journey started three and a half years ago while in search of a preschool for our eldest daughter with Down Syndrome. After visiting many International schools we almost gave up on the idea that she would independently attend a mainstream environment as she did in the UK. Then we discovered this little haven where Miyu could be Miyu.

The concept of letting each child learn at their own pace meant that our little girl would have a chance to explore and learn with her peers without the need for a permanent shadow teacher.

Sarah and David , parents of Juno, 3.5 years old, Preschool Class

“Our Daughter Juno has been at Blue House since she was 20 months old and has never once said she doesn’t want to go to school and has even asked for longer days!

The early years are partly about your child finding their space in the world outside of the nest of home and Blue House is the perfect extension of the nest. The Teachers are so warm and the environment so nurturing. Juno is a very spirited girl who has flourished within the creative Reggio approach and I think she would have been stifled in a more traditional system.

Blue House has provided Juno the base for what will hopefully be a lifetime love of learning and beautiful friendships”.

By the time her younger siblings, Hana and Jasper, were ready for nursery, there was no doubt about where we would send them. They attended toddler classes in the “Infant & Toddler Atelier” and both were already settled-in by the time they started preschool.

We have built great relationships with the staff and other families. We enjoy a strong sense of community aided by the wonderful on-site Pantry. The emerging curriculum and it’s presentation by the educators is truly inspiring. We could not wish for a more creative, open-minded and beautiful setting for our children”.

Testimonials

Max Issel, Year 10

“One of the things I like about attending Chatsworth is its variety. During my nine years here, I’ve met all sorts of people from different countries, races and religions. Also, the teachers always manage to make learning interesting. Everyone knows everyone at Chatsworth, and its small size is what sets it apart from other schools and that makes the school special to me.”

Roshika Ranasinghe, Mother to four children, Year 2, 3 (twins) and 6

“We’ve always known of the school as it is near our home, and the Chatsworth community is more like a family than a school. The principals happily greet parents and students each morning, there is a supportive family atmosphere, and our kids have grown in confidence and personal understanding.”

Kirsten Peacock, Graduate of Class of 2017

“I am most grateful for the encouraging teachers, friends and family whose faith in me has truly motivated me to better myself. These inspirational figures have taught me that simple, kind gestures can make a drastic difference in someone’s life.”

Testimonials

Joseph Bewley, Student

“My favourite aspect of Dover Court is the strength of the teachers. In every classroom, the teachers manage to create a welcoming environment where anybody can ask questions. At any point during a lesson, students don’t have to feel that they’re disrupting the class; they know that they’ll be supported.”

Sara Brough, Parent

“My children come home from school happy, and that is the most important thing to me. It is an incredibly inclusive school with children from many nations and backgrounds. As the secondary school is not massive, the children have many opportunities to participate in team sports and represent their school in competitions. Smaller class sizes mean the teachers know your children well and are on top of their academics. “Tic-tac-toe” homework, whereby the children have choices of which homework piece to do to deadlines, has been great at motivating my children to get their homework completed.”

Erica Budding, Parent

“When we chose DCIS, we were looking for an inclusive British curriculum school with a nurturing environment and a warm community feel. We have not been disappointed! Evan settled very quickly into nursery thanks to the enthusiastic and caring teaching and support staff. The activities set up each day both inside and out give him the freedom to explore and to enjoy his learning. The facilities are fantastic and Evan is given every opportunity to make the best use of them.”

Ruth Lewis, Parent

“Despite being a thriving international school, it still has a “small” school feel. The nurturing and community culture of the school shone out during our first visit and has been borne out through the first few weeks and months at the school.

We signed up to the school’s Facebook page before we started, so that we all felt part of the school, even before we came to Singapore.

We’ve been struck by how creative the teaching is and the focus on enabling the kids to think more deeply across a range of subjects, as well as developing independent and enthusiastic learners.

We also loved all the shade the school has, especially over the play areas and sports courts!”

Geraldine Bentall (Nursery, Reception)

“Dulwich College (Singapore) offers my children, at the young ages of three and five years old, opportunities most only dream of. A vibrant, diverse school with world class facilities and outstanding, passionate teaching staff. A school striving to be the best in the world yet never losing sight of the “Dulwich Family” sense of community. Unique to Dulwich is the exceptional dual language programme (English and Mandarin) accessible to children from the age of two years old. Every DUCKS (Infants) class has a dedicated native Mandarin teacher exposing children daily to Chinese language and culture. I am never more proud than when I overhear my kids correct each other in Mandarin, sing a Chinese song or recognise characters. They are happy and truly flourishing!”

Pooja Dua (Years 6, 9, 10)

“We have been at Dulwich since it opened and it continues to exceed expectations. We have three very fulfilled and happy children. If you are looking for a school that is pastorally sensitive, academically rigorous and focused on offering different opportunities that fulfill the requirements of children from varied backgrounds then this school is for you. Our children love Dulwich and it’s easy to see why when they are challenged and supported to exceed their own expectations in all areas. The teachers are dedicated, the facilities are fabulous and the community is welcoming and warm. We have experienced several good schools globally and would put Dulwich top of our list.”

Kevin Huntley (Years 9, 11)

“The Dulwich network of schools has provided my children with an excellent all round education. My son was in the Senior School production of Romeo and Juliet and received outstanding teaching from dedicated staff, leading to an extremely high quality production. My children also enjoy a wide range of sporting activities, with regular training and matches. Another area of excellence is the community service programme. My son recently spent a week teaching in the College’s partner school in Cambodia which he thoroughly enjoyed. Both the academic and extra-curricular activities are of the highest standard.”

Alice Clark-Platts (Years 2, 4)

“Our family has been at Dulwich since it opened in 2014. We have two daughters in the school who are receiving a first-class education. We cannot praise the teaching staff highly enough. Their commitment to students and enthusiasm for their job is evident. We have also had very positive experiences with the management side of Dulwich and feel very listened to and supported there too. Our girls race into school with huge smiles on their faces and I couldn’t wish for a better experience for them.”

George,

“What I value the most about the school is its diversity, the commitment and dedication of its teachers and the wonderful way the school supports students in their journey to be thinking, mindful, well-rounded individuals”. My daughter, Avaana absolutely loves school!

She hasn’t missed a day since she has joined GEMS World Academy (Singapore) in September 2014. When your child is clearly inspired by her teachers, enjoys learning and is enthusiastic about going back to school day after day, semester on semester, to me that is the best gauge of a good school. The proof really is in the pudding!

GEMS (singapore) has turned out to be an exceptional choice.”

Emma Middleditch, G10, National Youth Triathlon Champion

“When I grow up, I want to be an Olympic Champion in the Triathlon. I have had this dream since I was very little and I am determined to get there one day! I know GEMS will help me get there, and I believe I am already on the right track!”

Testimonials

Danial, Grade 6

“One of the best things about SMMIS is that the school is small. This gives teachers the opportunity to help their students learn in a more effective way. The teachers are kind, friendly and they always take time out of their schedule to help their students. They also help students after school and sometimes even before school, if they have a difficult time understanding something.”

Rafi, Grade 1

“I love SMMIS because we get to build robots in class. We also get to swim and to play soccer which I love. Everyone’s so friendly and happy, it’s like one big family, we all look out for each other.”

Darren, Parent

“The breadth of education that our children have been getting at SMMIS has been fantastic, from technology, language and strong maths, to art, science, history and more. This smaller school continues to provide that extra touch which our children benefit from as they thrive and succeed every year.”

Tamy, Parent

“My husband and I are originally from Australia and have lived in Singapore for 14 years and had 3 children here. For us, SMMS International was our first choice of school for our children. For children who are brought up away from their extended family, a warm and friendly environment was essential for us and SMMS International provides exactly that – it is a school where teachers and all staff know all the students regardless of their age or how long they have been at the school.

As well as this, we have found the education to be fantastic. Without a doubt, our children have gained in all aspects of their learning – from literacy and reading, mathematics, art and music, as well as sport. They think broadly and most importantly, they are happy.”

Testimonials

Sixth Form, Sixth Form Parent

“We just wanted to say thank you so much for the incredible support you have all given our daughter individually, and collectively, in her application to Oxford. We are of course utterly thrilled to bits with her offer and impossibly proud parents! As you all will know, we had pretty much nothing to do with her application at all – it was all down to you and the team that encouraged, challenged and helped her along the way and we are very grateful.”

Infant School, Infant Parent

“As a Reception and Year 2 parent, I am so pleased that my children joined Tanglin from Nursery. Both were in pre-schools before and were happy, so it wasn’t until they started Nursery here that I realised just how special Tanglin is.

The teachers have a wealth of experience and both of my children settled quickly, both into the school and subsequent year groups. Being not-for-profit, the resources are outstanding and the indoor and outdoor spaces have been carefully designed to allow children the independence to explore and learn whilst feeling safe and having fun. Their year in Nursery was a wonderful foundation for ‘big school’. It was important to me that they were able to have the best possible start to their education in an environment that would nurture their love of learning, embrace their curiosity and allow them to flourish. I love seeing my children light up when they talk about school; they are both happy, confident, eager to learn and always ready to help others.”

Junior School, Junior Parent

“This is my fifth year as a parent of a child in the Junior School, and I can honestly say that my children absolutely love the school. They love their teachers, we haven’t met a single teacher that they didn’t like! Last year my daughter was in Year 3 (the first year of Junior School) and the step up was seamless, learning is still so much fun, like the role play area where a new world is created each term that links to the work done in the classrooms. It really is rather magical, and must be a brilliant creative escape for the children. We can’t be happier for our children to be students at TTS. Keep up the good work!”

Senior School, Senior Parent

“Tanglin is phenomenal and the teachers are the cream of the crop. They are so professional – I have met some vastly different personalities and I can’t fault any of them. The quality of the people, their affinity for children shines through. My daughter’s teachers all know her so well and the students I’ve met have an amazing attitude – they learn how to communicate with authority, they are empowered to do that at Tanglin – and the way they grasp things is remarkable, it’s not linear, it’s creative and imaginative. We are delighted to be part of the Tanglin community.”

Testimonials

“My children were founding pupils when Marlborough College Malaysia started in 2012 and I intend for them to stay there until they finish Senior School. Initially we chose the school because of its reputation and amazing facilities. The facilities are large and plentiful enough that the children get day-to-day access to swimming, gyms, tennis courts, playing fields etc. which is not always possible at the large international schools in Singapore.

Having been at the school now for over five years, there are many other things we greatly appreciate. I love the sense of community that the school creates, as between teachers, pupils, parents and Old Marlburians there is a warm and companionable atmosphere. When my children were very young, I admired the way that the senior students were so kind and helpful to the little ones. The children often socialise across age groups and it is great to see the respect and tolerance for different ages and cultures. The school fosters confidence in the children and a supportive environment to develop their talents.

Perhaps the thing I like most about the school is that each child is treated as an individual and the school actively seeks to nurture the abilities of the individual child. For the academically able children, that means encouragement and teaching at an advanced grade level. For the less able children, it means giving them the learning support they need. The wide variety of sports, arts, music and other activities gives the children several other opportunities to thrive and have a fun and active day. At the end of the holidays, my youngest child tells me he is “school sick”, as in homesick to go back to school. Their love of school says it all.”

“We have two children boarding full time in Marlborough College Malaysia, one in both the Preparatory and Senior School. For us, the choice of school was obvious. MCM is the only British school that operates in Asia as a subsidiary, and not as a franchise. To us, the difference is crucial. It means the teachers come from England, with the same standard you would expect from the main school. It means a broad based academic curriculum, plus a real commitment to sport and co-curricular activities. It means great pastoral care, and a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. It also means an enduring commitment to the principles of the main school in England.

The location is also great. No other international school in Asia offers 90 acres of grounds to play sport. With Johor turning into an academic hub and Singapore nearby, the children also get to play regular sporting fixtures against other schools and clubs. Meanwhile Malaysia offers yearround sunshine and clean air (a genuine rarity in Asia). It also means our children get to interact with, and learn about, a broad melting pot of cultures – which we hope will pay dividends in an increasingly global workplace.”
