Makes you want to go out and explore doesn’t it?

I’m referring to our front cover of course. A 40 minute hike to the top of the Chamoissiere lift from the top of the Col de Joux Plane as the sun sets is sure to inspire. We were spoilt for choice when it came to choosing a cover image for this issue, but once again the very talented Reuben Shaul came up trumps. The irony is that Reuben lives in Tel Aviv, not in the Portes du Soleil and we hope his image inspires you to get out there and create your own memories.

Summers are about adventures here in the mountains, though Chief Scout Bear Grylls has had a fair few of his own in some very exotic and dangerous locations. Are you brave enough to tackle his Survival Academy? Find out more on page six.

Of course, we have a fair few homegrown adventurers who are blazing a trail in their respective pursuits. Mogul skier Ben Cavet regards his Sochi 14 winter Olympic experience as preparation for the next winter games in PyeongChang in 2018, while mountain biker Tahnée Seagrave is travelling the world as an elite athlete, competing against the best in the business. When you see Bear Grylls on TV, it’s easy to imagine that you don’t see the full story. Does he really sleep in the makeshift shelter he just built from leaves and cobwebs? Or does he depart for the nearest five star hotel as soon as someone shouts cut? We’re more inclined to question the reality of the small screen in these days of ‘structured-reality’ and ‘dram-ality’ TV. Bear (real name Edward), a reservist with the SAS until 1997, is probably best known for his TV series ‘Born Survivor’. He’s also been involved in several other television projects, all on the theme of survival in the wild and at 35 he became the youngest ever Chief Scout.

In response to thousands of requests from budding adventurers over the years, Bear has established the ‘Bear Grylls Survival Academy’. Relaxing package holiday with fun family activities it ‘aint. The academy teaches real life self-rescue skills, delivered by Bear’s handpicked team of highly trained experts.

It’s referred to as ‘the most challenging but empowering survival course on the planet’, teaching the real meaning of resourcefulness and determination.

What’s new?

The fact that our three resorts aren't afraid to invest in some serious developments and improvements each season cannot be disputed. There's never been a better time to holiday, work or live in our valley, so here's some tips to help you make the most of it.

Big Foot’s Café Rue du Bourg, Morzine

Summer Snowboarding Yes, you read that correctly. The Village des Enfants and Burton Snowboards have teamed up in Avoriaz to offer kids aged between 6 and 12 years the chance to learn to snowboard at Riglet Park - a synthetic piste with a variety of beginner features.

The Pleney Is Back After a staggering amount of work and investment, the new Pleney bubble lift in Morzine now carries 900 bikes an hour (instead of 250 on the old lift!) from the centre of the resort to the top of the Pleney.

The home of Morzine’s only curry house has a summer facelift and the new menu features burgers, salads, sandwiches, paninis, jacket potatoes, soups and a rather intriguing ‘Pie du Jour’ with chips and greens for a bargain €8.50.

New Bike trails in Avoriaz This summer, for the first time, Le Tour chairlift from the centre of Avoriaz will be equipped to carry mountain bikes, giving you access to the Lindaret bowl, Mossette chair and Switzerland from the centre of the resort.

There’ll also be a new pump track in the centre of Avoriaz.

Trail Running on Mont Chery Trail running is set to become a big deal in Les Gets, with new signposted routes now available on Mont Chery, taking in forests and mountain pastures. There’s a green circuit of 5.7km and 250m of elevation, a blue circuit of 10.5km and 580m of climbing and a black circuit of 11.5km and 800km of ascent. All routes begin and finish at the top of the Mont Chery bubble.

Celine Gros Riding Academy Female mountain bike supremo Celine Gros opens the doors on her first riding academy this summer, bringing with her 15 years of experience in national and international competition. The Alpine Bat tle – Les Gets 23rd & 24th August What do you get when you cross a mountain bike endurance course, an orientation challenge and a race? The Alpine Battle, that’s what. HOW CYCLE FIT ARE YOU? By bev fentiman

Your bulging quads and well defined calves are the envy of your fellow cyclists, and you start every ride strong, but there is much more to being cycle fit than just the legs. As the ride progresses, your hips seesaw in the saddle, your lower back aches, and you are slow in corners. “That’s me” I hear you say? Your core tires long before your legs do. Although cyclist’s legs provide the bulk of the power, the abs and lower back are the vital foundation from which all movement, including the pedal stroke stems. If you are serious about cycling this year and you want to do more than ride at a gentle pace down a sunny road or trail, then you really need to start strengthening your core.

So what is the core?

There is a common misconception about the core; we usually think of the abdominals as the “six-pack” and those who think that tend do hundreds of crunches and then wonder why they’re not as good at cycling as they’d like! (If this sounds like you, don’t worry; you’re in good company).

The core muscles are quite a bit larger than just your abdominal muscles. They start at your hips and go all the way through your abs, up along your spine and to your shoulders and neck. The core muscles are complex muscles, requiring far more than simple crunches in order to get stronger.

Why do cyclists need a strong core?

A strong core is vital to a strong pedal stroke as it's the platform that you push from.

With a strong core you will take corners more efficiently, have increased endurance, be more comfortable in the saddle (less lower back pain) and have a more efficient pedal stroke.

If your core is not strong and stable it will fatigue, so you will waste a lot of energy compensating and using smaller muscles. Your body will move up, down and sideways instead of putting that energy into the pedals. Having strong legs but a weak core is like having a Ferrari car with a Ford chassis. Sound familiar?

I spend hours on the bike, my core must be strong?

Unfortunately more hours on the bike does not equate to a stronger core. You need strong core muscles for the cycling tripod position where the saddle, pedals and handlebars support your weight and your core maintains a still position, but this does not build your core. You will have noticed maybe two hours into a cycle, that the core is fatigued, your back is aching, your form is wavering and you're starting to use other muscles. You are never actually strengthening the core, just reaching the fatigue point each time where your core switches off. You will need to train your core separately.

Try these 5 core exercises to be really Cycle Fit To create a core that lets you ride faster, longer, more powerfully and finish stronger than ever, just commit to 7 minutes of exercise a day, 3 days a week Power Bridge A. Lying on your back, bend your knees and place your heels near your glutes. Arms are at your sides, palms down.

B. In one motion, squeeze your glutes, raise your hips off the floor and push up from your heels to form a straight line from shoulders to knees; toes come off the floor slightly. Hold for 3 seconds.

Keeping your toes raised, lower yourself threequarters of the way to complete one rep. Do 20 repetitions.

preparing for Pyeonchang By amie postings

It’s hard to believe that someone as modest and unassuming as Ben Cavet could have created controversy in the pursuit of his freestyle skiing dream. In February this year Ben skied on the French national team at the Sochi Winter Olympics, despite being born in Maidstone, Kent.

On the BBC, Olympic commentators were quick to claim Ben as ‘one of ours’, a great skier who’d somehow defected to the other side. “The Sun newspaper called me up, they wanted to know what was going on. I just want to ski and perform, it’s good to set the story straight” Ben explains.

...I knew I’d change nationalit y to ski on the French team at some point...

Ben began skiing aged two on a family holiday, his dad is a ski instructor and the family moved to the area when Ben was ten. Now aged 20, the family live in La Cote d'Arbroz, just outside Morzine.

“There’ve been a lot of supposed ‘explanations’ for my place on the French ski team. Contrary to popular belief, I’ve never applied for UK Sport funding, and they never

turned me down. I knew I’d change nationality to ski on the French team at some point and if I’d taken UK Sport funding this would have affected my chances of skiing for France.”

It’s true that those who criticise UK Sport’s levels of funding for winter sports athletes use Ben as a convenient example of supposed ‘missed talent’. “I learnt to ski in France, first skied moguls in France, joined local ski clubs in France and perfected my skills in France.

Would I have had these opportunities if my family had stayed in the UK? Absolutely not.

I have a much better chance of fulfilling my potential as a freestyle skier on the French national team. For me, it’s important to represent the nation that trains you.”

France has a strong history of producing top mogul skiers. In every winter Olympic competition until the 2010 Vancouver Games, French athletes returned victorious with medals around their necks. “This expertise stays in the team. Successful athletes become coaches and more kids like me get the chance to learn from experts.”

With a father as a ski instructor, one of the largest training grounds on his doorstep and the support of excellent local ski teams, its no wonder Ben’s performance earned him a place on the French national team.

“Sochi was a really special event, it was definitely the highlight of my skiing career so far.”

...There was a free games room, free Coke… but we had to pay for our own McDonalds, which was a bit disappointing.

“The French team was 150 athletes strong with a great support team. The opening ceremony was particularly special and the facilities in the Olympic Village were incredible. There was a free games room, free Coke… but we had to pay for our own McDonalds, which was a bit disappointing.” Yes, it seems Olympic athletes do eat Big Macs.

Ben’s Olympic goal was to place in the top 10 but his best result pre-Sochi was 16th. “Up until Sochi it had been a mentally tough season. We spend a lot of time retaining our physical fitness, but we don’t have any sports psychologists. I came 8th in the final in Sochi, exceeding my expectations and setting me up nicely for the rest of the season.”

Ben went on to become Junior World Champion.

“Japan is the most interesting country I’ve visited so far. The Japanese absolutely love their mogul skiing; their athletes are celebrities with big sponsorship deals. Its really cool to experience the cultural aspects of the

countries I compete it, but travel is really expensive. My training doesn’t leave me with enough time for a job. Other than some funding from the mountain resort of Chatel, I’m totally self-funded.”

Ben is such a dedicated, talented and all-round nice guy, this surely won’t be the case for much longer. “The resort of Chatel is really committed to giving promising skiers from across the area the opportunity to develop their skills by financing their training programmes. It would be really hard for me to compete without their support.”

The Pyeonchang Winter Games of 2018 may seem some way off, but in the mind of an ambitious athlete, the next Olympics are always on the horizon. “My aim is to arrive in South Korea for the next Olympics as favourite.

I’m focusing on my mental preparations, my training and my progression in competitions to make sure I get better each time.”

To anyone that’s experienced the knee and joint pressure of skiing down a field of moguls, it will come as no surprise that professional mogul skiers get old quickly. “The oldest competitor I know is 30 years old, but typically skiers will retire before then. I’ve made no decisions on what career path I’ll follow when I’m too old to compete, but I am starting my ski instructor qualifications this spring. There are perhaps opportunities to coach other athletes, and I’m learning Italian and German languages too.”

English or French, Junior World Champion or Olympic Champion, one thing is certain. Morzine, Les Gets and Avoriaz should be very proud to be the home of Ben Cavet.

Girls on bikes Mountain biking is often viewed as a man’s domain, with many women put off from trying it due to the lack of female role models and women only options. But things are changing.

Looking back just a few years, women on the trails were quite rare. It’s now more common to see female specific bikes, clothing, races, groups and holidays. Women’s participation in mountain biking is growing and more women are taking advantage of the benefits associated with riding. Although many of us have been riding for years, there are a number of reasons behind the recent boom in women on bikes.

Over the last two years the number of women competing in mountain bike races has almost doubled. There’s also been a rise in women specific mountain bike races and events such as Diva Descent, Daisy Chain events and women’s MTB groups like Dirty Girls Ride and Dirt Divas.

Bikes as a whole have been catapulted to the masses thanks to the Olympics, and the Women's Tour of Britain but more specifically, athletes like Rachel Atherton have worked hard to connect with the mainstream media to raise the profile of the sport and represent women's mountain biking in a positive and inspiring way.”

Mountain biking is a great way to get fit, meet new people and visit new places and getting involved is easier than ever before. The sport is becoming increasingly accessible, believes Sarah. “Fortunately for women, there are a plethora of opportunities to get involved!

Be it hiring a bike and getting coaching with the many coaching schools out there now, or borrowing a bike from friends and going out with more experienced riders. Women's specific events like Diva Descent were started on the principle that it would provide women with a safe and controlled opportunity to give it a try, receive some coaching and meet new riding buddies. It has proven to be extremely successful at doing this, even increasing the number of women going on to compete.”

Whilst the less extreme disciplines such as Cross Country and All Mountain are more popular with women, even Downhill has seen a rise in participants. Starting out can be daunting, but getting involved with groups

Morzine’s Concrete Communit y A huge amount of time and effort has gone into the campaign to develop a new skate park in Morzine. For years, Morzine’s skate community has been tirelessly raising money and awareness for the project. By the time April ’14 rolled around, there was €15,000 in the pot and the local powers that be accepted the project. It's hoped that in the near future, a sizable new skate park will be built on the site of the old one, opposite the Skoda Arena, below the Super Morzine bridge.

The new skate park would be a fantastic facility for Morzine and everyone from holiday making families to local folk would benefit from its development. While participation in other traditional sports is declining, skateboarding is growing in popularity. It’s likely that the new skate park will attract more tourists to the area and there’s an argument that skate parks support vibrant, healthy communities, just like many other athletic facilities.

Since opening last winter, ‘the Bec’ has gained quite a reputation for honest, wholesome food, the likes of which you don’t see much in the mountains. Their home brewed real ales are a huge treat, while the scotch eggs became something of a Morzine must have before they were controversially replaced by a homemade gala pie. Everything on the menu is delicious, you won't be disappointed.

Michelin trained Head Chef Alan White cut his culinary teeth under legends such as Raymond Blanc and Andrew Fairlie. Restaurant Alan White is located within the Hotel Chamois ‘Or and you can expect a relaxed approach to fine dining. Everyone can be a real high flyer with a paramotor - and this summer might be the time to invest in one. The sport of paramotoring is growing in popularity because it offers a simple, safe, relatively low cost way of getting airborne. Unlike paragliding, the motor means you’re not dependent on a certain height or air flow to take off. Just strap a propeller engine to your back, clip into your paraglider wing and you’re away. The latest aid for safety-conscious sun worshippers is a UV tracker disguised as a beautiful jeweled bracelet! The June bracelet measures your sun exposure and an app notifies you when another sun cream application is needed. Over the pl ain, beyond the hill

Television channels are packed with adventure documentaries at the moment. Flick the channel one way to find 13 men stuck on an island with Bear Grylls calling the shots. Flick again and Ben Fogle is encouraging folk to head off on their expeditions of a lifetime. Did you know that Morzine is home to its very own serious adventurer?

“On 5th May 2007 I met my mate Andy at Starbucks on Embankment in London. It marked the starting point for our walk to Istanbul. I wasn’t what you might call ‘prepared’, in fact I still believed I could talk Andy out of it. We broke the journey down into small stages and took each day as it came” Paddy Morris tells me on a rainy afternoon in Morzine.

It’s the most intimidating stage of my objective to walk right around the globe...

There’s a reason why we’re reflecting on the first stage of Paddy’s adventure. He’s about to start the second leg; the long, dangerous road between Istanbul and Samarkand in China. “We’re all familiar and comfortable in European countries. My journey through 11 mainly Christian countries was challenging and fascinating, but this next stage through the mainly Muslim world presents lots of extra challenges.”

Paddy and Andy’s trans-European walk raised £15,000 for the Red Cross, walking an average of 35km a day and getting shot at in Switzerland (“of all places”), as they descended the Col de Coux on the day they left Morzine. They wrote a chapter about their experiences for Lonely Planet (sandwiched between Rory Stewart MP and 'Into the Wild' author Jon Krakauer no less), and Paddy remembers the worst part of the journey as Northern Italy. “It’s a flat, dull place that took us about a month to cross. In July the heat was unbearable and every village shop was closed. They were bad times indeed.”

So why now? With another Morzine summer on the horizon, should you really be leaving the valley? “Now is the perfect time. I need to be back for my work as a ski instructor next winter (not to mention clear of the Himalayas before winter!), and now is a really interesting time to travel through central Asia. It’s the most intimidating stage of my objective to walk right around the globe, and I suppose enough time has passed since the first leg for the rose-tinted specs to develop.”

The next leg of Paddy’s journey crosses seven time zones between Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan,

For the French, cycling is a national treasure. If the weather is nice and you drive up the valley in daylight hours, there’s a good chance you’ll pass a fair few cyclists on your way up the hill. The terrain here is perfect for cycling… all kinds of cycling.

There’s plenty for the roadies: mile after mile of epic vistas and leg burning climbs.

Anyone can find road-riding nirvana out here.

From the guys who enjoy a casual 20 miles followed by a pint and a plat du jour, through to professionals training up for The Tour.

The Portes du Soleil is a mecca for lovers of carbon fiber and lycra.

There are so many great road routes in the area its impossible to list them all here.

Many start in Morzine town center, such as the Col de la Joux Plane (Alt. 1700m/11km) - winding up the Route des Nant up towards Nyon overlooking Samoens. Or there’s the Col d’Encrenaz (Alt. 1400m/7km) - heading up through La Côte d'Arbroz and up the back of the epically scenic Mont Chery with the option to descend to Taninges and back up The Tour route to Les Gets turning it into an epic day!

Whether you’re after easy or hard, long or short, there is a road route here for everyone.

Maps of the various rides can be obtained from the Morzine Office de Tourisme, or they can be downloaded from the Source Magazine website.

Then there’s the other side of the coin, the gravity riders. You won’t fail to miss the many armour-clad bikers queuing for the lifts or washing mud from their bikes all over

town. Downhill Mountain Biking is one of the fastest growing ‘extreme’ sports out there and the PDS has embraced it whole-heartedly.

Now heading into its fourth decade as a separate sport from traditional cross-country beginnings, Downhill is a fast, action-packed sport that is still closely tied to its racing roots. The bikes are big, strong and usually come packing 8 inches (20cm) of travel.

In recent years there has been a split in the gravity community. Downhill has birthed a younger sibling - Enduro (or All Mountain), featuring all the joys of lift aided downhill riding, but when the terrain flattens out the fun doesn’t stop. If Downhill is growing rapidly in popularity, Enduro is the vanguard leading the charge.

The concept is simple but has taken a while to come about because technology wasn’t previously up to scratch. Thankfully, with modern materials and manufacturing processes, it is now. All Roads Lead To…

The number of GB plated cars on the local roads during the summer has possibly inspired you to consider driving to the Alps next time round. Morzine and Les Gets are two of the closest mountain resorts to the UK, and there are a number of advantages to having your car with you.

The advantages…

It’s 535 miles from Calais to central Morzine, and 510 of these miles are on the excellent French motorway system.

The increasing costs of flights and carriage mean that if you’re carrying three or more people in one vehicle with bikes, skis or snowboards, it’s probably cheaper to drive.

Having your car with you during your holiday means you’re better able to explore the local area. This can be particularly handy during the summer.

You can use the journey as part of your holiday, stopping over in one beautiful city or another en-route. The website stopoverconnections.com includes loads of friendly B&Bs that offer an alternative to the likes of Formule 1 and Holiday Inn.

The Disadvantages…

Mountain lovers tend to care lots about the environment, so you’re sure to consider the carbon consequences of your drive. One vehicle with three or more passengers in it will produce less carbon than three travellers flying to Geneva airport from the UK. Where are you going to leave your vehicle? If you’re driving in the winter, you’d most likely prefer your car to be in a covered garage for the duration of your holiday. If your

accommodation doesn’t come with parking, you can use one of the local undercover garages, where the average cost of parking for a week is €55.

Your return journey to the UK could be hampered by bad weather and busy roads, especially in the peak winter weeks when it seems everyone brings a car to the mountains. You could face a slow and at times treacherous descent to the autoroute.

Follow My Dream Many things in life begin as a dream and although starting a downhill mountain bike team isn’t simple, when you have the passion, drive and determination to succeed, anything is possible.

After moving to the Alps in 2004, the Seagrave family settled in and fell in love with the mountains. The family bought a chalet in Saint Jean d’Aulps, which acted as the catalyst for the beginnings of FMD Racing. Tony Seagrave, FMD team manager and dad to Tahnée and Kaos, has always been a keen rider, racing BMX when he was younger. “The year we moved here, the World Championships were held in Les Gets.

Tahnée saw Vanessa Quin win, and bizarrely the following year she came to stay in the chalet we ran. Tahnée fell in love with Vanessa’s baby blue bike and the following year Nigel Page (team manager at Nukeproof bikes) helped us make a smaller version of her Intense DH bike, especially for Tahnée.”

Tahnée was eight when she began taking mountain biking seriously and twelve when she started racing. Despite family riding holidays when she was younger, it was moving to the Alps that ignited her passion, and Kaos soon followed. In 2009, after realising both Tahnée and Kaos were talented riders, Follow My Dream (FMD) was launched.

“Tahnée has bankrupt the family with her pursuit of happiness” jokes Tony. “She had a dream, just like all of our children and we have done what we can to support that. We have been extremely lucky with the brands

that came on board to help Tahnée and this was also the inception of the team. When it came to racing World Cups, there were so many great companies that believed in her, we felt the best way forward was to continue building our partnerships with the brands that helped her success as an amateur.”

The aim of FMD is to give young riders the opportunity to showcase their talent and give them guidance, Tony explains. “Knowledge is power. These kids come in and, no disrespect to mountain bikers in general, but the sport is way behind others with regards to people

thinking they know everything - especially the riders. They don’t and here at FMD, we don’t either. But the ethos behind FMD is to try to give these youngsters the knowledge and skills to perform at the highest level.”

Five years on, with a huge social media following and support from the likes of Devinci, Fox Head and Marzocchi, it’s hard to believe that FMD are one of the smallest teams in downhill mountain biking. “It’s tough because where others have the cash to invest, we have to beg and borrow. What I do know is that the experience I gained working within

other sporting fields has allowed me to select what I believe will be the best for our riders. The rest is down to top blagging.”

her and Kaos had a great season in 2013, accompanied by Mike Jones, a young rider from Wales.

After just one season with FMD, downhill giants Team CRC picked Mike up, and his replacement for 2014 is Neil Stewart. “Finding Mike was down to Tahnée, not me. She was invited to a RedBull camp in the UK back in 2012 and one of the riders was a young Mike Jones. She’d spoken about him, so when we started looking for a rider to join us, we started looking at Mike. He had amazing speed but was struggling with the whole package. I can safely say that when he left us to join Chain Reaction Cycles at the beginning of this season, they got the whole package. Neil Stewart was my spot and I also spotted the potential in Tahnée’s younger brother, Kaos.”

The team is supported by mechanic Matt Allingham and athlete trainer Chris Kilmurray.

Chalet Host Sam Dohert y at More Mountain “The early bird can sometimes catch the worm but most companies start seriously looking for their new Chalet Hosts around June. It’s as much about personality as it is skill when it comes to chalet hosting. You can be taught to cook a menu and how to clean a bathroom but if you’re not a people person it probably isn’t for you.

At More Mountain we have five catered chalets, which need two hosts in each. We usually recruit couples as they tend to work well together and run their chalet as if they are having guests over for a dinner party.

There are two great things about being a Chalet Host. Your get to meet a lot of varied and interesting people and obviously you get to go skiing or snowboarding regularly. Let’s be honest, that’s why most people do this job! But it is hard work - you’ll basically work a split shift six days a week for 18 weeks in a row. Also, cleaning toilets is never fun!

Some people think a Chalet Host’s job is easy - all baking fairy cakes and chilling out in hot tubs with guests. It’s not. You’re up early, grafting and going to bed late. And that’s just work! Apres DJ Lady Eliza “I wouldn’t say it’s difficult to find a job as a DJ in a ski resort, though you need to be able to back up your skills with a Mixcloud or Soundcoud page.

It’s worth researching where you want to go and contacting the DJs that are involved in resort nights and events prior to the season to introduce yourself and see if they are looking for DJs. If you don’t manage to secure a job in advance, it’s definitely worth coming out with your record box and giving it a go on the ground. If it’s something that you really want to do, don’t get disheartened. Go to bars and clubs to introduce yourself. Don’t take no for an answer. Think about putting on your own night or après event – that’s exactly what I did. Keep in touch with other DJs and promoters, as you never know what’s around the corner. If you don’t ask you don’t get.

The best thing about being a DJ in a ski resort is seeing the madness that I’ve created by selecting naughty drum and bass tunes. I love DJing and being able to do this here is amazing.

I do get a little bit nervous through. I remember my first Wobble Wednesday at the Inferno. My hands were shaking, I was so worried about what tunes to play and if the crowd would like them.

To be a good après DJ you’ll need a love for music, a love for partying and a love for the mountain.”

Ski Instructor Tim at LGSnowsports “I think there are probably around 40 British instructors working in Les Gets, Morzine and Avoriaz each winter. Skiing has always been my passion and I love being able to ‘share the love!’. You can also make a living by teaching skiing in France.

It’s a fact that there is currently more demand for British tuition than there are instructors. A fully qualified ski or snowboard instructor can generally choose where to work, such is demand for their skills.

In addition to the qualifications needed to be a ski instructor in France, you also need people skills and patience. So if you’re thinking of getting some qualifications under your belt and heading out to the snow, it pays to be a good listener as well as a good communicator. Very often our job is more about being able to get into people’s heads.

The best thing about being a ski instructor is experiencing people having their ‘breakthrough moments’ with their skiing and seeing them smile. Working in the mountains is (usually) fantastic and the best office environment that I’m aware of!”

Airport Transfer Driver Sarah at Getaway Vans “We start our winter season recruitment process in June and we’ll be hiring 18 drivers for next winter. As a minimum requirement you’ll need to be over 23 years of age and due to new Swiss regulations, all drivers must have 24 months professional driving experience, or hold a D1 minibus license and a Drivers Certificate of Professional Competence.

Our Getaway Vans passengers expect friendly, approachable and reliable drivers with local knowledge and experience of driving in Alpine conditions and we cover all these things extensively in training.

Typically our jobs start in the second week of December and continue until the middle of April.

Contracts range from 20 - 30 hours per week with a take home pay of between €800 and €1280 per month.

Transfer driving offers a flexible way to pay for a winter season. Weekends are long and tiring but drivers can work full time contracts and still have three full days to enjoy the mountain - not many other resort jobs can offer that!

We’ve also got one job opportunity to work at Getaway Vans HQ and down at Geneva airport at the weekend. It’s a demanding full time roll, but with 3 days off each week.”

Ski Technician Willie at Doorstep Skis “Each winter I hire around eight Ski Techs, some full time, some part time. My recruitment drive begins the minute we finish a season as some of the staff want to return for another winter. Around 50% to 75% of the existing team return each year, but it varies. Returning staff make my life a whole lot easier!

I usually start receiving applications via word of mouth by June time, and if we haven’t filled all our positions by July or August, then we’ll place adverts for the remaining positions.

Staff at Doorstep can expect to work between 12 and 30 hrs each week, depending on whether they’re employed on a part or full time contract.

When things are busy then there’s sometimes overtime available.

As a minimum requirement I look for a sound and basic knowledge of skiing and/or snowboarding. Training is provided but you can’t beat having previous experience. We offer a personal service to our clients, so good communication skills and an outgoing personality are essential.

The best thing about being a Ski Tech is meeting all the chalet girls first. Also, you’ll be part of a small, dynamic team while working hours are interesting and varied as we deliver to different locations. You’ll get to meet lots of people in the local ski industry and meet clients who come from a range of different backgrounds. And of course, our whole ethos is about getting mountain time, which everyone has ample time to do.”

Salmon Parcels Ingredients 2 skinless salmon fillets 2 sprigs of coriander 1 lime – sliced ½ punnet cherry tomatoes - cut into quarters 1 jar Levi Roots Caribbean Stew New potatoes – washed Asparagus Finely chopped coriander and a wedge of lime to serve Aluminum foil Method Place two squares of greased aluminum foil on a flat surface and place a salmon fillet in the middle of each. Place a couple of slices of lime and a sprig of coriander on each fillet, along with a handful of tomatoes. Season with salt and pepper.

Place two spoonful’s of Caribbean Stew Sauce onto each salmon fillet, then fold the two squares of foil well, taking care to seal all edges.

Put onto the BBQ and cook for approx. 15-20 minutes. Alternatively, pre-heat your over to 220C and place the foil parcels on a baking tray for 25 minutes.

While the salmon is cooking, bring the new potatoes to the boil in a pan of salted water.

Cook until tender and drain.

In a small saucepan heat the remainder of the cooking sauce, taking care not to burn it.

Carefully open the parcels, take off the coriander and lime and discard.

Toss the potatoes with a little butter and serve alongside the salmon. Pour the remaining sauce over the top and serve garnished with finely chopped coriander and a wedge of lime.

Ingredients 1 punnet mushrooms – cut into quarters 1 punnet cherry tomatoes Peppers – cut into 1 inch chunks ½ pineapple – cut into chunks 1 unripe mango – cut into chunks Firm cheese – Halloumi is best 1 bottle Levi Roots Fiery Guava Dipping Sauce

Method Soak the wooden skewers in cold water for at least 30 minutes – this will prevent them burning on the BBQ. Thread the vegetables and fruit pieces onto the skewers until they are filled. Place them on a tray and cover with the Fiery Guava Dipping Sauce and leave for 15 – 30 minutes.

Place the skewers on the BBQ or under a medium heat grill to cook for approx. 10 minutes, turning all the time to allow for even cooking and basting throughout.

Once cooked remove from the grill and serve on a bed of rocket leaves.

Peach Passion Cocktail

Ingredients 5 ripe peaches, peeled ½ cup vodka or ½ cup of sparkling water ¼ cup fresh lime juice Pinch of salt Small bunch of mint leaves ¼ cup of maple syrup 1 bottle prosecco or 1 bottle of sparkling water Crushed ice Mint leaves to garnish Method Whizz all the ingredients except the prosecco in a blender.

Pour the mixture into glasses, only half-filling them. Add crushed ice and top with the prosecco / sparkling water and stir in a few mint leaves.

Waiting for Winter

It’s a contrary life we lead in the mountains. One minute we’re fighting the depths of the biting January blues, forcing our way through a white out and dreaming of blue skies and noses that don’t ache with cold. The very next it’s midsummer, and as we lie on the banks of the lake, gazing dreamily up at the peaks, all we can think about is the next time they will be snow capped and we can glide over all that fresh powder. After all, snow is basically what brought us to the mountains in the first place. So it’s with a growing sense of anticipation that we watch the last of the bedraggled bikers vacate Morzine and hunker down for the autumn interseason; months dominated by rain and sleep.

The bars, once lined wall-to-wall with Brits abroad supping on Jager-bombs and pints, now take on an altogether more Galloise personality, featuring strong-armed men sipping delicately on kirs and gazing into the chanson francaise filled ether. Conversation is of course dominated by the coming season.

The strong-armed men and their delicate drinks shrink back into their seasonal hiding places and the snow begins to fall, whether they prophesied it or not.
