THE VIEW – MAY 2024

A Word from the Chief

members of the First Pacific community

Welcome to the May 2024 edition of The View. This is a bumper issue which includes several news stories, awards, and sustainability matters. Our biggest feature is the tale of PLDT’s 95 years of history, celebrated last November with the theme of Meaningful Connections underpinning its success and pointing the way towards a purposeful future.

This issue begins with an overview of First Pacific’s full-year results for 2023. It is filled with superlatives, from record-high profit to highestever dividend income. None of this would have been possible without the dedication of our people. On behalf of all our stakeholders, I thank you all.

We then have several pages reviewing PLDT’s first 95 years followed by a look ahead to the future with the introduction of groundbreaking fiber broadband services capable of reaching 10 gigabits per second – 100 times faster than the average connection speed in the Philippines.

Elsewhere, Indofood continues to introduce exciting and innovative food products. Through its brand Promina, Indofood is leading the trend in baby snack products, offering parents an array of choices to nourish and delight their little ones, including new broccoli and kale crackers which are gluten-free

and good for babies. Indofood’s Chiki and Chitato Lite brands have rolled out new flavors of their own to satisfy the evolving tastes of consumers while the world’s biggest noodle brand Indomie has recently launched new flavors based on Middle Eastern and Indonesian cuisine – delicious and nutritious.

On sustainability matters, we have the story of PLDT’s inaugural green loan, a billion-peso facility to modernize and expand PLDT’s fiber network. On the Meralco side, eco-warriors got together for Earth Day, while PLDT and Smart joined Huawei and the Philippine government in forest protection. Our May edition of The View ends with the winners of the 9th Annual First Pacific Group Photo Competition – which had the privilege of awarding photographs with both artistic merit and substance.

To finish, let me paraphrase for you, the reader, what I said at PLDT’s 95th anniversary celebration. We express our gratitude to you, our customers, employees, and partners. We are committed to innovating, and extending our malasakit (sincere care) so you can continue creating meaningful connections, powering our businesses and helping achieve a strong and healthy society. PLDT – 95 years of Meaningful Connections

PLDT Inc. (“PLDT”) celebrated its 95th Anniversary in November 2023 and its theme of Meaningful Connections underpins its success and carries the group forward into a purposeful future.

DOING WELL, DOING GOOD

Over the last 95 years, PLDT has striven to serve customers and touch lives, improve livelihoods and, crucially, move

swiftly with the times. Its digital transformation has seen consistent investments in new technologies and infrastructure, and in enhancing customer experience.

PLDT connects individuals, families, businesses, organizations, and the country in a myriad of meaningful ways. From the digital home to shopping to internet security, business automation to banking, education, news, and entertainment, PLDT and its wireless unit Smart Communications, Inc. (“Smart”) continue to contribute to Philippine nation-building.

TAKING THE PHILIPPINES TO THE NEXT LEVEL

A nation-building group, PLDT and Smart build and manage the infrastructure that connects the Philippines with the world, and this infrastructure supercharges the country’s internet speed. Through Maya, the PLDT group also delivers world-class digital banking, transforming lives and livelihoods across the multiple islands of the country and abroad.

1940’s

1928

PLDT was incorporated on 28 November 1928 and given the franchise to establish and operate telephone services in the Philippines.

A new law was enacted to connect a seamless nationwide network that would facilitate communication and delivery of services to the people and spur economic development.

1929

The link between Manila and Baguio was established, making the first national long -distance calls possible.

1933

Overseas radio-telephone service was established between the Philippines and the US and other parts of the world.

The first network of PLDT employed the open-wire system. Horse-drawn service vehicles and bulky wallmounted telephones were a feature of the times. PLDT then charged a sum of 7.50 a month.

The war years proved to be devastating as the US armed forces destroyed the PLDT system in 1941 to prevent the Japanese from using it. By the time the Americans regained control, only 10% of the original facilities were operational.

PLDT also powers enterprises with innovations and services for the next technological revolution in AI, Machine Learning, Augmented Reality, cloud technology, The Internet of Things and much more. PLDT Enterprise organizes the Philippines’ most visionary annual tech conference to host global luminaries and advance the enterprise ecosystem.

And all of this has progressed from a fixed-line legacy telecommunications company born in 1928, its network served by horse-drawn engineering buggies.

A VISION FOR GROWTH

95 years from its inception, PLDT is a group transformed and wellprepared for the next chapter of innovation.

LOYALTY AND LOVE

A couple is feted for their 25-year PLDT career

Alot can happen in 25 years; in fact, dreams can come true.

As part of PLDT’s 95th Anniversary, the company feted Christina and Christopher Chan at its Pamana Awards for their 25 years’ dedicated service. It was Christina’s first job as a Quality Control Inspection Engineer in 1988, fresh from college. She told her interviewer that it was her dream to work for PLDT. She later met the love of her life – Christopher – at PLDT and their careers and lives have thrived ever since.

and dedication of the PLDT workforce. “We are very proud to organize the Pamana Awards every year because it is one of the ways we strive to inspire generations upon generations of PLDT employees, that their hard work and loyalty will allow them to thrive in the company and reach their dreams,” said PLDT Chief People Officer Gina Ordoñez.

1998

The late ‘90’s - with the Asian financial crisis - was a time of formidable challenges for PLDT. However, Manuel V Pangilinan of Hong Kong-based First Pacific Co. Ltd. saw a great opportunity in PLDT’s potential.

Launch of Agila II, the country’s first communications satellite, by PLDT subsidiary Mabuhay Philippines Satellite Corp.

PLDT partners with USbased software giant Oracle Corp. to develop a network computing infrastructure in the Philippines dubbed Phil-Net. The Philippine Internet Exchange (“PhIX”) was established.

On 24 November 1998 PLDT announced the entry of First Pacific which acquired a 17.5% stake in PLDT for approximately P29.7 billion or some $749 million at that time. Manuel V Pangilinan replaced Antonio O Cojuangco as President and CEO. Cojuangco assumed the position of Chairman.

Transforming the Philippines’ energy landscape

MGen, AP and SMGP launch the Philippines’ first integrated LNG facility

Meralco PowerGen Corporation (“MGen”) and its power partners are set to launch the Philippines’ first and most expansive integrated liquefied natural gas (“LNG”) facility in Batangas - in a landmark development for the Philippines’ energy sector.

On 1 March 2024, MGen, Aboitiz Power Corporation (“AP”) and San Miguel Global Power Holdings Corp. (“SMGP”) unveiled a deal which values the entire enterprise at approximately US$ 3.3 billion. MGen and AP through a 60%:40% joint venture, Chromite Gas Holdings, Inc., jointly invest in 67% of two of SMGP’s gas-fired power plants - the 1,278 megawatts (“MW”) Ilijan power plant and a new 1,320 MW combined cycle power facility. This is expected to start operations by the end of 2024.

“This is a pathbreaking venture,” said MGen Chairman Manuel V Pangilinan. “Apart from transforming the energy landscape of the Philippines, this symbolizes a milestone alliance among major players in the energy industry towards a more sustainable

future. We are thrilled to have such reliable partners as we lay the foundation for a brighter, greener future.”

POWERING PROGRESS WITH CLEANER ENERGY

In addition to the power plants deal, all three companies will acquire the LNG import and regasification terminal of Linseed Field Corporation. This will be used to receive, store and process LNG fuel for the two power plants, thus fully integrating the local energy sector into the global natural gas supply chain.

These initiatives are seen to help boost energy security and steer the country towards a cleaner, more sustainable future in line with the Marcos administration’s push for more natural gas in the country’s energy mix. The collaboration will augment the country’s power supply with over 2,500 MW of generation capacity. Crucially, it will make competitively priced, affordable power accessible to a broader base of consumers while significantly lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

A BIG WIN FOR THE PHILIPPINES AND THE PEOPLE

The collaboration among the three power companies represents a shared commitment to innovation, reliability, and environmental stewardship in the energy sector.

AP Chairman Sabin M Aboitiz said, “Both LNG and renewables are needed to achieve a balanced energy mix and well-planned energy transition. Above all, this is a big win for the Philippines and the people. Economic development is impossible without energy security, and this investment is a definitive step forward in that direction.”

SMGP Chairman and President Ramon S Ang, added, “For the first time, three leading power companies are working together to secure our country’s energy needs while transitioning towards cleaner power sources. This represents a major leap forward for our energy future, ensuring not just reliability but also cost-efficient power for many Filipinos.” <<

The Department of Energy’s Philippine Energy Plan aims for natural gas’s share in the power generation mix to achieve 26% by 2040.

This also aligns with the Philippines’ own goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70% by 2030.

PLDT TAKES PHILIPPINE INTERNET SPEED TO

THE NEXT LEVEL

PLDT Home launched its Gigabit Fiber portfolio this February, opening the Philippines to the vast possibilities of ultra-fast broadband speed.

“With Gigabit Fiber, we’re taking the internet to the next level in the Philippines,” said PLDT Home Senior Vice President and Head of Consumer Business Jeremiah de la Cruz, “It opens a whole new ecosystem of possibilities, where it’s not just supporting one service, but the digital lifestyle of Filipinos.”

The internet connection speed of this groundbreaking fiber broadband service can reach 10 gigabits per second (“Gbps”), 100 times faster than the average 100 megabits per second (“Mbps”) prevalent in the Philippines. Only a handful of developed countries such as South Korea, Japan and the United States have achieved the impressive power of gigabit-

fast internet. Its presence in the Philippines puts the country among an elite global roster of nations.

“PLDT Home’s innovation in its country-wide fiber infrastructure is primarily driven by how internet speed not only influences the way we communicate and consume information but also enables businesses, aids in work and education, sparks creative pursuits, and enhances people’s experiences,” said PLDT Chairman and CEO Manuel V Pangilinan.

ELEVATING CUSTOMERS’ DIGITAL LIFESTYLE

To support the evolving digital lifestyle of Filipinos, PLDT Home will be initially in selected areas in Metro Manila, Cebu and Davao, rolling out Gigabit

Fiber in four different plans, from 1 Gbps to a maximum of 10 Gbps to enable ultra-fast and high bandwidth online activities for everyone at home.

A TRAILBLAZING INITIATIVE

PLDT and Smart Deputy Network Head Eric Santiago describes the Gigabit difference: “As an analogy, 100Mbps is a small motorcycle. But 1Gbps is already a sports car. And the 10Gbps would be a supersonic jet. That’s why 10Gbps can ultimately support telemedicine, smart cities, augmented reality, virtual reality, or extended reality, and other future technologies.”

The trailblazing initiative to bring gigabit fiber to the country is aligned with the PLDT group’s support for the Government’s overall digitalization mission, as one of the founding members of the Presidential Private Sector Advisory Council (“PSAC”) under the Digital Infrastructure Pillar.

It also boosts PLDT’s aspirational multi-year transformation, with elevating customer experience as one of the key priorities, as well as its endeavors to help the country achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly #9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. <<

PLDT spearheads Green Loan

PLDT secures its first-ever Green Loan for fiber upgrade and expansion

In a landmark loan for PLDT and the Philippines, PLDT announced on 6 March 2024 that it has secured a 1.0 billion Green Loan facility from HSBC Philippines (“HSBC”).

This is HSBC’s first green loan facility to a Philippine-based telecom company. The loan will partially fund the ongoing nationwide modernization and expansion of PLDT’s fiber network supporting internet delivery platforms such as fiber fixed broadband, mobile data services, and carrier-grade WiFi. The intended use of the loan aligns with the global Green Loan Principles, specifically targeting energy efficiency. Studies show that fiber cables generate less heat than previous technologies, with minimal energy lost to the environment.

JOURNEY TO DECARBONIZATION

The upgrade of the network to fiber and the resulting efficiencies support the PLDT group decarbonization roadmap. This aims to reduce its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030, coming from a 2019 baseline. To support this ambitious target, the group is actively exploring integration of renewables,

green technologies, and various energy optimization initiatives.

PLDT Chief Financial Officer and Chief Risk Management Officer Danny Yu said, “The availability of sustainable financing facilities will help PLDT’s commitment to ensuring long-term profitability by doing business responsibly. We are pleased to start this journey with HSBC and anticipate further expanding our sustainable financing portfolio with other sustainability projects.”

BACKED BY THE FINANCIAL COMMUNITY

“PLDT’s first-ever Green Loan facility is affirmation that our efforts to pursue the twin goals of energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions are appreciated and supported by the financial community. We are thankful to HSBC for helping PLDT carry out our commitment of stewardship of the planet for the next generation,” said PLDT Chief Sustainability Officer Melissa Vergel De Dios.

INDOFOOD ADDRESSES WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM

Director Axton Salim on the importance of sustainability along the value chain

The 54th World Economic Forum was held from 15-19 January 2024 in Davos, Switzerland. Under the theme “Rebuilding Trust”, world leaders from governance and business sectors gathered to discuss crucial global issues including sustainability.

The global food system contributes as much as 30% of greenhouse gas emissions. The sector therefore seeks to increase investment in low-carbon products for commodities such as beef cattle, dairy products, corn, rice, soybeans, and palm oil to enhance sustainability.

INNOVATIONS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE FOOD SYSTEM

Indofood Director Axton Salim spoke at The First Movers Coalition for Food (“FMC4Food”) discussion panel. He noted, “Food security can be challenging among developing countries such as Indonesia, where access to quality food is still difficult. Therefore, affordability is the key.”

Salim presented various initiatives and innovations developed by Indofood. “As a Total Food Solutions Company that operates at all stages of the food production process, from raw materials to products distributed into the market, we continue to address gaps and challenges

throughout the food system. This includes implementing low-carbon initiatives throughout the value chain, from upstream to downstream,” he explained.

The Indofood agribusiness group has implemented sustainable agricultural practices to support the Indonesian government’s target to achieve Net Sink from the forestry and land use sector by 2030. The practices include zero deforestation and degradation of high conservation value, zero new planting on peatlands, zero burning for clearing land and replanting, as well as preserving around 25,000 hectares of high conservation value areas. 84% of the fertilizer used by Indofood is organic.

PRIORITIZING PRODUCTIVITY

Salim added, “Livelihood of small holder farmers must be prioritized, such as what we have implemented with the potato farmers in Indonesia. We prepare good seeds, educate farmers to implement good farming practices, thereby increasing productivity and minimizing the use of fertilizer.

“In the context of Indofood, apart from agriculture, we also look at the manufacturing aspects, such as our use of energy with 70% renewable energy originating from biomass and solar PV.”

Other speakers stated that the transition from conventional to sustainable agriculture can repair profitability by increasing productivity and reducing costs. The panel discussed the importance of technology in reducing emissions and how multi-stakeholder collaboration is needed to overcome climate issues. <<

Meralco eco-warriors for Earth Day

To celebrate this year’s Earth Day on 19 April, over 50 volunteers from Meralco and the Philippine National Police joined One Meralco Foundation’s (“OMF”) sustainable reforestation program, One for Trees.

Despite the heatwave affecting the Philippines, a total of 600 trees were planted at the 5,729-hectare LagunaQuezon Land Grant (‘LQLG”), bringing the total number of trees planted in the area to 202,604.

Meralco Senior Vice President and Chief Audit Executive Melanie T Oteyza led her team in planting saplings of a variety of indigenous trees. “This is a simple yet effective and meaningful way for us to celebrate Earth Day. We call on others and strive to become eco-warriors. Let us continue to love Mother Earth. It is our only home and we must protect it,” Oteyza said.

ONE FOR TREES REFORESTATION

SITES – 35 FORESTATION

SITES COVERING APPROXIMATELY 768 HECTARES.

NEW LIVELIHOOD OPPORTUNITIES

OMF’s One for Trees program, initiated in 2019, emphasizes the need for sustainable solutions to address reforestation and forest protection in the Philippines, and supporting people and communities through economic and social development initiatives. The program has so far nurtured over 2.3 million trees through its partnerships with local government units and organizations. Reforestation also provides the members of the local communities with alternative livelihood opportunities. Some had resorted to slash-and-burn agriculture which poses great harm to the forests. Locals can now earn from preparing

reforestation sites and seedling production.

The program now provides regular income to 2,359 tree farmers, 1,008 of which are women. The tree farmers are crucial actors to ensure the 92% survival of One for Trees’ trees.

EARTH DAY, EVERYDAY

Meralco Chief Corporate Social Responsibility Officer and OMF President Jeffrey O Tarayao said that environmental activities should be viewed as individual investments for the future.

“Sustainability programs help us improve our relationship with the environment. Tree planting activities, like the one we just implemented in LQLG, engage an entire community with collective action to preserve the forest. In Meralco, the significance of Earth Day is beyond an annual celebration. It is Earth Day, everyday,” Tarayao concluded.

Following the success of previous implementations, One for Trees expanded its reforestation initiatives to address environmental concerns beyond critical forest ecosystems to expand the program to coastal and wetland conservation. Since 2022, the program has fulfilled its commitment by planting more than 322,079 mangroves. <<

PLDT, Smart join Huawei and government in forest protection

PLDT AND SMART RECOGNIZE THE VITAL ROLE OF OUR FORESTS IN COMBATING

CLIMATE CHANGE, IN KEEPING OUR COMMUNITIES SAFE FROM DISASTERS, AND IN ENABLING US TO CONTINUE DOING BUSINESS IN THE LONG-TERM. ”

PLDT and Smart Chief Sustainability Officer Melissa V Vergel de Dios

PLDT and Smart are continuously leveraging their industry and technology leadership to engage stakeholders from industry, government, and civil society in biodiversity conservation and nodeforestation initiatives.

The group is now collaborating with Huawei Technologies Phils. Inc. (“Huawei”), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (“DENR”), and the Department of Information and Communications

Technology (“DICT”) in deploying the technology of US-based non-profit organization Rainforest Connection (“RFCx”) to reinforce local forest conservation efforts and support enforcement of environmental laws.

TECH “GUARDIANS” CAPTURING VITAL DATA

The project will deploy RFCx “Guardians”, which are bioacoustics monitoring devices, in the protected forest areas of Palawan. The province is recognized as the Philippines’ last biodiversity frontier. The Guardians will capture sounds of the forest, including those from chainsaws used for illegal logging and firing of gunshots, among others. Powered by solar energy, RFCx Guardians are installed high in the tree canopy and have the capacity to capture sounds within a 3-kilometer radius. Collected data is transmitted via wireless technology to the cloud for analysis using AI and Machine Learning technology.

With the RCFx Guardians, and through a connected platform called “Arbimon”, forest rangers can monitor a wide area more efficiently which would otherwise be near

impossible on foot, given the size of the forest. With access to analyzed data from the Guardians, the rangers have access to improved and specific threat intelligence, enabling them to facilitate action to stop illegal activities in protected forests.

CRITICAL EFFORTS IN PROTECTING THE PLANET

PLDT and Smart Chief Sustainability Officer Melissa Vergel de Dios commented, “Together with our social outreach arm, the PLDTSmart Foundation, we are proud to be part of this project that uses communications technology to support and reinforce critical efforts to preserve and protect forests in the country. We are fortunate to have found like-minded partners in Huawei, the DICT and the DENR who share our commitment to help protect the planet for the next generation.”

As supporters of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures and the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures, PLDT and Smart align with global standards in reporting climate risk management and environmental protection efforts. These initiatives aim to contribute to the UNSDGs, particularly #13 on Climate Action, #14 on Life on Land, and #17 on Partnerships for the Goals.

PLDT’S STRATEGIC ENERGY SHIFT

PLDT partners with ACEN to switch facilities to renewable energy

PLDT is on track to shift its energy consumption to renewables, strengthening operational efficiency and reducing dependency on electricity from fossil fuel and non-renewable sources.

PLDT is partnering with ACEN’s supply retail unit, ACEN Renewable Energy Solutions (“ACEN RES”), to switch 33 facilities in Greater Metro Manila to use 100% renewable energy. The partnership, signed this March, will enable PLDT to leverage on ACEN RES’ portfolio of solar and geothermal power solutions.

PLDT Vice President and Sector Head for Property and Facilities Leo Gonzales noted, “This supply agreement with ACEN RES expands and diversifies renewables in the energy mix of our key facilities. Our continuous transition to renewable energy supports the direction to make our PLDT facilities eco-efficient and future-ready.”

COST SAVINGS, CARBON EMISSION REDUCTIONS

Among the facilities transitioning to renewable energy is the PLDT-Smart Integrated Operations Center in Makati City, a 24/7 command center. The center oversees network operations and manages the performance of PLDT’s extensive fiber infrastructure and Smart’s wireless facilities across the Philippines.

This initiative is expected to generate savings in energy and operating costs for PLDT and support its continuing groupwide decarbonization roadmap with an estimated reduction of almost 21,000 tons of carbon emissions annually.

A SCALABLE MODEL FOR A RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS

“Integral to achieving our strategic direction of ensuring long-term profitability by doing business responsibly are initiatives like this that allow us to achieve operational efficiencies and reduce our environmental footprint at the same time. This is a model that we aim to keep scaling up to accelerate our decarbonization roadmap and support the global ambition to achieve Net Zero by 2050,” said PLDT First Vice President, Chief Sustainability Officer, and Head of Investor Relations Melissa Vergel de Dios.

PLDT aligns with the frameworks of the Task Force for Climate-related Financial Disclosures and the Taskforce for Nature-related Financial Disclosures for the integration of climate action and nature stewardship into operational strategy and business operations.
