This design for Jack Garretts single ‘Worry’ was chosen as part of this year’s Secret 7” gallery and sold at the event to raise money for Amnesty International, I’m very proud that someone felt compelled enough by my design to spend £50.00! I thought the image would work well as promotional material such as a tote bag to be sold alongside or with the record as a limited edition run.

This brief has been a self directed project of investigation in female form and shape. It began as an exploration of curves with a new sable rigger watercolour brush , the length of the brush lends itself well to the creation of curves. I soon began making simple female forms , just enjoying the brush on the paper. I then decided to incorperate dynamic poses into this investigation as a challenge to see if I could re-create them and I chose Yoga poses as they are so weird and dynamic.

After scanning in my images I experimented with laying down simple shading with photoshop, it wasn’t until I downloaded Kyles Watercolour brushes that I discovered this new way of making pictures. I use the lasso tool to draw in the shape and then I carve the image out using the brushes . The result I felt were the most successful and original work I’d produced on the course yet.

I then took the shape elements I’d created and decided to expand them into a zine for Matt’s Thought Bubble Zine brief.

This allowed me to further investigate shape in an abstracted way, along with the use of moire to create interesting patterns and add an extra element of interest to the simplicity of the layout and monochromatic colour.

I was lucky enough to get a table at Thought Bubble this year, along with my partner in crime Lauren! We didn’t have much time to prepare work so I decided to produce two more yoga ladies in edition to the two I’d already done.

Female Form I printed the Yoga Ladies at uni and the result was good but the resoluation was a little too low , so that’s something to considor for my next batch of printing. I sold the A4 for £10.00 and the Quad for £20.00. Annoyingly I had only printed two of the quads and sold out of them on the first day, which is something to note for the future. I got very positive feedback from both men and woman, but my main customers who actually purchased the prints were woman in their teens to the mid-thirties (I’m guessing!) Feedback received was that the prints were postitive and uplifting and helped to promote postive body vibes.

The Yoga ladies are also the most liked images on my Instagram feed so far, and while I know social media is fickle I have increased my followers from just friends and family thanks to these iamges

The next half of this brief came about when I was asked to be part of an exhibition by the collective Sister Said, the brief was open but did stipulate the influence of nature as the exhibitin would be titled ‘Oh, Natural’. I decided to pick up on my yoga lady method and see if I could make the process work for this brief.

I kept the shape of the body nice and flowing, I wanted it too seem like they are floating in water. The method worked well, I went all out with the hair on these as I felt like this added to the mermaid narrative. Overall I’m pleased that this way of constructing human forms along with photoshop has progressed. My next aim is to make this work in a full bleed image and not just on a white background.

I can see these images working well as part of a stationary range to be sold at somewhere like Oliver Bonas or Paperchase. Having a solid colour scheme has helped in keeping the aesthetic clean and can be used when expanding the range further.

Interesting to see the resulting end to this brief, I would never have guess this kind of self directed work would have ended with a collaboration and exhibition . I need to keep working on this process and start to expand to other aspects of drawing and not just figures.
