Why I chose this brief? I was asked if I would like to take part in this brief by the manager of North Bar, it was off the back of meeting him in the Showcase Spectacular craft fair I had participated in back in November. I was over-joyed to be asked to join and it kind of legitimised to me that I can be part of this great creative network. Good things -Weird & interesting brief. -Being asked to participate means I’m on the creative radar. -My final piece had the tone of voice I had envisioned. Problems -I would have liked a higher quality paper for the digital prints I have to sell. Future Practice

-I would say that this brief has taught me that if it is a personal response in which the brief is seeking, don’t be afraid to disregard audience to make something which is authentic to you. -Seek higher quality paper & test print first.

The Brief Create a new film poster on any existing film.

Why I chose this brief?

When I first read this brief I already had a poster in mind that I had sketched out years ago but at the time didn’t have the technical ability to professionalise. Film poster artwork is something I love but haven’t had much experience with and with the brief being so open I thought it was a great opportunity.

Good things

This brief was the most enjoyable of all my responsive brief, I couldn’t tear myself away from this and spent about 10hrs straight until my eyes started to blur, I feel like part of what made it so fun was the fact that I was able to navigate the digital side of things so much easier then I have in the past, and also I felt like it captured the correct tone of vunrability that I wanted.

Problems

-The huge size of the deliverable which resulted in a very large file which was too large to be up-loaded onto behance, I had to lower the file quality significantly to accommodate this, if there is a better way to do this, let me know!

Future Practice

-I definitely want to partake in more film poster briefs, I really enjoyed summing this film up in one giant image and the inclusion of the type standards really professionalised the work.

The Brief Use the theme of mark making to design Spring & Summer appropriate surface pattern designs.

Audience Marks & Spencer’s customers.

Deliverables Sizes must be either (500x500px) or (500x700px) You can submit up to five designs.

Deadline 20/04/15

Why I chose this brief? Surface pattern design seemed big and scary to me but this brief was really straightforward and seemed a nice step into pattern design. I also liked the fact that they had an audience for you to cater for which added an element of professionalism to this. Also I would rather like that internship please! Good things -The encouragement to play with different and weird materials. -Having the constraint of Spring/Summer and the M&S shopper to guide the designs. -Growing experience in pattern design. Problems I would like to see some on a larger scale with a more fully realised repeat pattern but the small size and scale of the deliverables meant anything too small just looked blurry. Future Practice -I really want to learn more about surface pattern design, and work on larger scales with more technically difficult designs. I would really love to make wallpaper in the future. -I will do even more customer demographic research in the future so I can have full confidence in my designs.

Wedding Invitations The Brief Pitch for a wedding invitation design based on a short chat with the client & some visual references.

Audience Individual client.

Deliverables Wedding invitation & order of service.

Deadline Mid- April

Why I chose this brief?

I felt like I had the ability to design something which was in a similar tone to reference images the client and I spoke about but yet also make this a very personalised piece of work.

Good things Since this brief didn’t go as I had expected I actually ended up learning a lot about how you approach a brief with somebody who isn’t in the design world, how to be clear about what you both are agreeing too. Problems Unclear agreements which resulted in me removing myself from this brief. Future Practice In some ways this brief has taught the biggest lessons of this module, that of proper professional conduct when arranging work. I know now how clear I have to be when I first meet a client otherwise I will just be wasting time. I need to gain more confidence in speaking to people about matters such as money/timescale/final resolution otherwise I will be wasting time, money and resources.

The Brief Compete an illustration every week based on a different word.

The Brief Via D&AD design a new concept and packaging design for John Lewis mail delivery.

Audience John Lewis Shoppers. John Lewis head office design. D&AD Judging panel.

Deliverables New & exciting packaging design that exists well within their own brand ethos

Deadline 31/03/15

Why I chose this brief? My creative partner Lauren and I chose this brief as we felt it would give us the structure we needed to complete such a brief but also let us combine our talents well. Good things -We worked well on collaborating concepts together. -We naturally fit into a good working rhythm. -The end product received very positive peer feedback reviews. Problems -We spent too much time on the concept and not enough on the execution. -We could be too nice to each other and not push each other enough. -Didn’t prioritize our time together properly. Future Practice -To have more confidence in the concept earlier on. -Lauren has taught me to think a little faster about my work, make quicker choices and to just go for it.

The Brief A new concept and design for Whistles first ever scent

Audience Whistles customers. YCN judging panel

Deliverables Very open. Either a concept, packaging design or campaign.

Deadline 19/03/15

Why I chose this brief?

Whistles is a brand whose visual identity I really admire, I was intrigued by how I would approach this imagining how scared me so I picked it.

Good things

-I learned a lot about the restriction and standards big company’s like this have on their designs. -Analysing this brief during our beginning sessions was a challenge because it was so ambiguous I understand that you have to read between the lines to some degree.

Problems

-I was very apprehensive about this brief and I didn’t put my all into it, I felt ashamed to submit this and after I did I didn’t want any of my other responsive submissions to be such a disappointment to me (and they weren’t!)

Future Practice

-I had first time nerves on this brief and it almost seems silly now but I really didn’t believe I could make something of professional quality at this stage, the rest of the module I believe went on to prove otherwise to myself
