New Zone 1 Commissioner Dwight Selby is owner of Selby Realty, a commercial realty firm. For the past year, Selby was seen at advisory board and City Commission meetings, gathering information and preparing himself for his role on the commission. But Selby recently said he still has a lot to learn. “I’m going in with eyes wide open, and I expect to learn a lot,” he said. From attending the board meetings, he said he learned that the board members give the matters a lot of thought, and he will recognize that when reviewing their recommendations as a commissioner. An area resident for 33 years, Selby worked in marketing after

graduating from DePaul University and came to the area when he got the job of tourism director for the Daytona Beach Chamber of Commerce in the 1980s. He said he stayed because he found the Ormond Beach area to be a great place to live and raise a family. He said he likes to do focus groups, and, while campaigning, talked with groups of seniors, young people and business people. What came out of that, he said, is that quality of life is the most important reason for living here. He wants to bring in good paying jobs as well as housing options for young people and seniors. On budget matters, he said the city needs to keep watch on unfunded liabilities, such as pensions and health care costs for city employees. ROB LITTLETON

Rob Littleton, who owns GoOrmond, a tutoring agency for high school students, is the new commissioner for Zone 4. As a smallbusiness owner, he says that he will bring a businessman’s perspective to the commission.

it restored and turned into a museum for the city. Others say the expense would be too great and it should be replaced with a modern development. A consultant hired by the city is preparing a report on how much it would cost to fix up the building, which has deteriorated under city ownership. There will be public meetings and City officials will decide the building’s fate. n There could also be a telecommunications company asking to install antennas on top of telephone poles, or even add new poles in city rights of way, and the City Commission would be faced with the task of formulating guidelines. The need for more wireless communication has been identified in the city. n And the large project that has been talked about for a decade, Ormond Crossings, could finally see some progress. The 3,000-acre planned development is seen as the site for residential and industrial growth but remains vacant. The company that owned it, Tomoka Holdings LLC, has been purchased by a group of local investors doing business as OCLS LLC. The new owners say they plan to move the project forward.

MOVE IN READY!

While the new year will bring new decisions for the City Commission in 2017, there are a few ongoing matters. n The need for a new community center, similar to Nova Community Center and South Ormond Neighborhood Center, has been discussed by the City Commission. While some officials see the need for a community center west of Interstate 95 due to population growth, no final decisions have been made. The city recently signed an agreement with Zev Cohen and Associates Inc. to develop a feasibility study for school property near Pine Trails Elementary. n A proposed development that could change the downtown area, between the river and U.S. 1, will come before the City Commission in January. Highlander Corp., owned by Bill Jones, is seeking to remove the twostory height restriction on New Britain Avenue, clearing the way for a mixeduse building, which would bring more residents downtown. n An historic building, the MacDonald House, will be in the spotlight. Now housing the Ormond Beach Historical Society, some people would like to see

Commissioner. Born and raised in Ormond Beach, he is the son of Bill Partington Jr., longtime owner of AHC Safe and Lock on West Granada Boulevard. He currently is assistant public defender and division chief for the Felony Trial Division for the seventh circuit. He earned his law degree at Loyola Law School in New Orleans. Partington said he looks forward to helping make Ormond Beach one of the best places to live in Central Florida. There will be brainstorming sessions early in 2017, he said, to help the new commission discuss ideas and set goals for the future. The commission will be faced with the task of keeping the tax rate low while maintaining quality municipal services, he said. “It’s a constant fight against inflation,” he said. He said the growth seen in retail sales could be an indicator for more residential growth. As the mayor, Partington does not plan on any big changes. He said the commission has been successful in the past. “We want to continue to move forward and make incremental improvements,” he said. “We want to make sure we get public comment and consensus on projects.”

The “Go” in GoOrmond stands for “great opportunity.” “That’s what I see in every child,” he said. He has a degree in accounting technology from Daytona State University and also works as a certified tax preparer. His financial abilities will help him analyze the city budget, he said. “It’s an honor to be on the commission,” he said recently. “I’m really excited for the next two years. Ormond Beach has the best city staff in Volusia County and maybe in all of Florida.” Littleton has said his priorities are to keep property taxes low, responsibly manage the city’s budget and preserve “the great quality of life” in the city. Two main interests of his are developing Ormond Crossings, a planned business and residential development on North U.S. 1, and creating biking trails that are outlined in the city’s Bike Plan. “I hope to use my skills and experiences to bring a fresh perspective to the City Commission,” he said. He said he wants to see growth in the city, while keeping the charm intact.

In the most recent Point-in-Time Count, 901 homeless people were reported in Volusia County. Out of that number, 368 were living in shelters, leaving 533 people still out on the streets. Homelessness has been a longtime problem for Volusia County, including Ormond Beach. While strides have been made — the Volusia-Flagler County Coalition for the Homeless effectively ended veteran homelessness in both counties in 2015 — there is still work that needs to be done. Community organizers and leaders are shifting their focus on putting an end to chronic homeless. While the goals are the same for people dedicated to solving this societal problem, the paths they want to take are very different. HOUSING FIRST, EVERYTHING ELSE SECOND

While there are hundreds of different issues that can complicate the already complicated lives of homeless people, Sam Willett, chairman of the board for the Volusia-Flagler County Coalition for the Homeless, believes they all share one problem we as a community could solve: having a place to sleep. “It’s very easy to criticize unsheltered,” said Willett, who doesn’t like to use the term “homeless.” “One of their biggest problems is sleep deprivation. If you’re sleeping outside, you never get a decent night sleep. You have to sleep with one eye open. Think about how it was when you were in school, and you had to pull an all-nighter to study. You were a mess the next day, right? How would you like to live like that every single day?” Willett, who joined the board in February, said that’s why the coalition wants a housing-first approach in 2017. It worked two years ago, when the Salvation Army took a housing-first approach to help veterans: Today, if a homeless veteran is seeking shelter, there is currently no wait list for them to receive assistance. “We want to end homelessness, not just manage it,” Willett said. “When you get someone into a permanent shelter, you get them thinking more clearly. People are more effective in dealing with their problems when they have a place to stay.” The coalition plans to do that by working with landlords to take a chance on the unsheltered and by getting access to more affordable housing. The goal isn’t to get homeless people into group homes or shelters, but their own apartments and houses that fit the size of their families. To end chronic homelessness, they also have to identify who is in need of assistance. According to the latest Point-in-Time Counts for Volusia and Flagler counties, there are about 200 chronically

Emily Blackwood

Jeff White and Sam Willett

WHAT IS CHRONIC HOMELESSNESS? The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development defines chronic homelessness as either “an unaccompanied homeless individual with a disabling condition who has been continuously homeless for a year or more,” or “an unaccompanied individual with a disabling condition who has had at least four episodes of homelessness in the past three years.”

homeless people. Jeff White, the executive director of the coalition, said he hopes to develop a coordinated entry system in 2017. “We have to identify these people so we can have a proactive outreach to them,” White said. “They can be suspicious, and sometimes it takes time to gain their trust.” “We’re not trying to be Big Brother,” Willett said. “The purpose isn’t to catch people. But we have the resources in our community to solve chronic homelessness. We’re in reach of doing this.” MORE THAN JUST A ‘FLOP HOUSE’

With first-hand experience being homeless, Luke Keppley is confident that the housing first mindset does not work. After being shot at, at close range, by a man with a 12-gauge shotgun, Keppley had to have part of his leg amputated in 2003. He told the Lebanon Daily News in 2008 that he had been denied disability and Social Security since. Eventually, he traveled from one state to another and ended up in Florida eight years ago. He’s lived on streets of Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach, eventually making his camp for several years right off U.S. 1. Everything changed when he met Anna Maria Cavicchia in 2012. Together they shared a vision for ending homelessness through restoration, and R.O.T.H. NOW was born. “There’s a thought that’s been planted in people’s minds that we need to overcome,” Keppley said. “And that’s ‘housing first.’” Rather than just opening another temporary place for homeless people to sleep, Keppley and Cavicchia want to create a humanitarian restoration program that lifts up the homeless

and offers emotional, financial, physical and spiritual accomplishment — all while being a self-sustaining part of the community. “The problem with homelessness is that they put up these temporary shelters, and then they have to rely on donations to operate it,” Keppley said. “If we want to teach people how to be selfsufficient, we need a program that operates by being self-sufficient.” Keppley says R.O.T.H. NOW will do that by having an organic farm on the property that will provide jobs and bring in enough money to keep the center operating without the need of donations. The Restoration Retraining Center will hold 250 people plus staff and will retrain the homeless from a mindset of poverty to prosperity by removing them from all addictions and teaching them skills so they can become independent again. “They have a right to become functioning members of society,” Keppley said. “We’re not a flop house. Whether they like the sound of it or not, that’s what many shelters have become: a free place to stay at the taxpayers’ expense.” In this next year, Keppley and Cavicchia hope to raise enough money to purchase a property to start building. And they’re hoping to do it in Ormond Beach. In order for the center to become self-sufficient, they need assistance from the community to get it started. “There’s a laziness when it comes to helping the homeless,” Keppley said. “You give them a 20, and you help feed them the heroin they’re addicted to.” “No more Band-aids,” Cavicchia said. “Let’s do something that solves the problem once and for all.”

Couple found dead outside their car on Interstate 4 An Ormond Beach man and woman were found dead near a vehicle parked on the side of eastbound Interstate-4 about 2:08 a.m. Dec. 31 near DeLand, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. Their three children were found inside the vehicle alive and unharmed. The deceased were identified by police as Daniel A. Kelsey, 32, and Heather L. Kelsey, 30. An autopsy will be conducted. Volusia County Sheriff Michael Chitwood said on Jan. 3 that the man appeared to have died from a drug overdose but they are awaiting an autopsy for the couple. The children are now in the care of family members. An FHP trooper stopped to check on the maroon SUV parked along the highway with its hazard lights on. The trooper discovered the two adults unconscious outside the SUV and they were pronounced dead at the scene shortly after. The three boys found inside the vehicle range in age from approximately 8 months to 4 years. They were taken to Halifax Health

New leaders plan changes at Chamber of Commerce New committees and technology planned to benefit members. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

The Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce starts a new era in 2017 with Debbie Cotton as the new president and CEO, a paid position; and Rafael Ramirez elected as chairman of the board. Cotton was hired last October after a nationwide search to replace Rick Fraser, who had announced his retirement. A South Daytona resident, she was working as vice president and chief operating officer of Seminole County Regional Chamber of Commerce. Cotton’s professional chamber experience was attractive to the Ormond Beach search committee. She is on the board of directors of Florida Association of Chamber Professionals and recently became chair-elect. She is currently in her second year in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute of Organizational Management, a fouryear leadership program. In 2017, she said the Ormond Beach chamber will upgrade technology to support members. Last year, a fundraising campaign was held and now it’s time for implementation, she said. The

website will be enhanced as well as equipment that is available at the chamber to members. Cotton says one of the best parts of working at a chamber is hearing about members doing business with each other. “That’s what warms by heart,” she said. “That’s what makes me passionate.” Cotton says a healthy business community is good for all citizens, because it provides a tax base to help provide services and boost quality of life. Originally from North Carolina, Cotton, 54, was raised in Orange City. She studied for two years at Daytona Beach Community College (now Daytona State University) and later attained a bachelor’s degree in organizational management from Warner University in Lake Wales. She has also managed a bridal shop and worked in marketing for a credit union in Orlando. She said her work experience has taught her the importance of customer service and working with other businesses. Cotton started as receptionist at the Seminole County chamber and advanced to president and CEO. She is happy to be back in Volusia County and working in Ormond Beach. “It’s a family here,” she said. “Businesses are so supportive of each other.”

RAFAEL RAMIREZ

The new chairman of the board will be Rafael Ramirez, who has been a member of the Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce since 1990. He has served in capacities including treasury secretary and president. He was chairman in 1995. Originally from Puerto Rico, Ramirez, 60, moved to New Orleans after high school. He attended Loyola University, where he earned a degree in business administration and a Master of Business Administration. Ramirez said he and his wife discovered Ormond Beach after her family moved to the state from Chicago. They had started to raise a family and found the city to have great schools, as well as being a great place to live, Ramirez said. Ramirez said his biggest goal as chairman of the chamber is to

He would like to see a finance audit committee and a government affairs committee to advocate for the business community. Ramirez has lived in Ormond Beach since 1987. He began as a loan officer at Ormond-by-theSea Bank, while his wife worked at American Pioneer Savings and Loan. He later was president and CEO of Community Bank which was sold to Bank First. In 2013, he was recruited by Halifax Health to work in market development in the Deltona area. Ramirez serves on several boards, including Council on Aging, YMCA and Boys and Girls Club.

Principals use their childhood friendship to foster community Tucker Harris and Kevin Flassig — both now principals of Title I schools — have known each other since the eighth grade. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

Growing up in Ormond Beach, 13-year-olds Kevin Flassig and Tucker Harris spent their time playing racketball, baseball and getting into trouble they’d rather not talk about — now that they’re both principals at local elementary schools. In January, Flassig was named principal of Osceola Elementary School, where he attended when he was a kid, and Harris became principal of Ormond Beach Elementary in August. Neither of them ever thought they’d end up back home. After graduating from Seabreeze High School, the pair moved together to Tallahassee to attend Florida State University. Flassig changed directions pretty quickly and moved back home to attend Daytona State College, where he took his first education class. “I had to mentor this kid at Osceola every week with my old third-grade teacher,” he said smiling. “That’s when I decided I wanted to teach.” Harris almost enlisted in the Air Force because he wasn’t doing well in Tallahassee. Then a friend of his asked him to help out with a bowling program for families who have children with Down syndrome. “It made me take a step back and realize how fortunate I was,” he said. THE WAY BACK HOME

After graduating with his degree, Flassig went on to teach Exceptional Student Education — which was what Harris was going to school for at the same time. Though the two didn’t get to hang out as much when they were kids, Flassig and Harris still kept in touch and talked a lot about their nearly identical career paths. “I was two years ahead of him, so I remember telling him how I overcame the challenges that come with working with ESE students,” he said. “It’s weird the way life works,”

Harris said. “We were separated for a while, but it circled to us coming back home. It’s not a coincidence. It’s all a part of a bigger plan.” “It’s really unique and special how I landed the job at Osceola, and then Tucker lands OBE right after me,” Flassig said. “We’re both home now, and we feel strong about this community. And we already have a partnership that usually takes a long time to forge.” A MORE CONNECTED 2017

RESOLVE TO TAKE MORE SELFIES IN THE NEW YEAR.

With both principals working in similar schools, Flassig and Harris have similar goals when it comes to next year. One of the biggest missions is to foster more relationships between teachers and faculty between the schools. They’re currently setting up tours for teachers to visit each school and learn about how other teachers are in the classroom. Just recently, they hosted a “Family Day,” for the schools’ staffs and their families to come together and meet. Flassig said he is also excited for Osceola’s mentor program that will connect students with students of Bethune-Cookman and other community leaders. “My whole thing is to get the students connected to the school,” he said. Harris is hoping to utilize OBE’s location to become more connected to the community. “It takes a village to raise a child,” he said.

PEOPLE to WATCH Career educator gets turn on the School Board Persis emphasizes the need to help middle-school students stay focused. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

After a few years of turmoil over teacher contracts, student uniforms and janitorial services, Volusia County Schools has appeared to hit a smooth patch, but the day-to-day issues and problems of education remain. Carl Persis, 67, of Ormond Beach, won election last year and will represent Zone 4 on the School Board in a four-year term. A graduate of Seabreeze High School, he earned undergraduate degrees from Daytona State College and the University of Central Florida and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Stetson University. He recently discussed issues local schools face in coming years and some of his priorities. When Persis served on the County Council, he said he was known for always looking at the budget. On the School Board, he’ll be looking for ways to spend tax money more efficiently, concentrating on technology, inventory, facilities, etc., rather than personnel costs. “You have to have qualified people and have to pay them,” he said. He would like to see a citizen’s budget advisory board created. “We need an objective review by people not connected to education,” he said.

Healthy

Living

He said he was glad teachers got a raise in the two-year contract they signed last year, and the board should start looking to the future to figure how they can get another increase down the road. “We should look at where money can be budgeted,” he said. THE PERSONAL TOUCH

Persis feels strongly about getting the families of students involved. He said parents and grandparents should be welcomed into the schools. “We have become so data driven that it’s easy to forget the importance of personal relationships,” he said. “We’re almost scared of not spending every minute on academic issues. We’ve lost our personal touch.” ONGOING ISSUES

One continuing concern is the cleanliness of schools. There are varying opinions on the subject, and Persis said what he hears is that it’s better at some schools than others. There is currently a “pretty good system” in place, he said, where teachers can send emails to the contracted company. He said he wants to get regular reports as a School Board member. School uniforms were a hot topic last year before being implemented. Persis said he would like

to see reports on any difficulties schools have had with the issue. Another area Persis would like to explore is cooperation with area colleges. He envisions tutors from the colleges getting involved with the students and serving as mentors. Also, he noted the Volusia Flagler YMCA has had a successful summer program at Turie T. Small Elementary School in Daytona Beach. Summer sessions are important, he said, to prevent the learning drop-off that can occur. On the testing issue, he said the School Board has done a good job at reducing district testing and he would like to see it reduced even further. He also said the amount of homework should be looked at. Persis believes that online learning is an important tool, mostly for the more motivated and advanced students. It allows them to go further and accelerate learning. THE TURNING POINT

There has been talk of creating a separate technical school in Volusia County, but Persis does not think it would be necessary if the right steps are taken to introduce students to career possibilities early in their educational career. “There’s a lot of options for students to learn careers,” he said. “Before we build a separate high

school, we need to look at what we have and figure out what we can do differently.” He said schools need to do better in letting students know about jobs that don’t require a four-year degree, especially at the seventhgrade level. He called that age a turning point, and some kids lose interest if they don’t see a place for themselves. Schools should help the middle-school students find a career that matches their abilities and likes and dislikes. “It’s a passion of mine,” he said. “We’ve got to give them some hope.”

The Sandcrabs have reached the new year undefeated for the second time in three seasons.

These student-athletes will turn heads in 2017

Here are the top sports people to watch for this year. JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

SEABREEZE BOYS SOCCER: IS THIS THE YEAR?

With seven games remaining in their regular season, the Seabreeze Sandcrabs have won 11 of their matches and tied the other. While Seabreeze has gotten used to winning its matches over the last several seasons, the Sandcrabs have not been able to get past the regional semifinal. Seabreeze’s season has ended in the semifinal four straight seasons, all to district foes (Taylor twice, Matanzas and Pine Ridge). Although the Pirates no longer belong to the same district, Seabreeze has beaten them all this season, including Taylor, which beat the Sandcrabs four times last year. “This year is different in that we

are getting the players to buy into what we are doing,” said first-year head coach Nathan Murphy. “We are playing more of an attacking formation, which seems to excite our players, but we do have the ability to switch to a couple of different formations depending on how the other team reacts to us.” The Sandcrabs have outscored their opponents 56-12, averaging nearly six goals per contest while only allowing one in return. Assistant coach Rob Bowling, who has the longest tenure with Seabreeze, has spent the last seven years with the Sandcrabs. His oldest son played on the 201314 team that didn’t lose a match until the region semifinal. Now his middle son plays goalkeeper. While considering the team special from three seasons ago, Bowling believes this group has what it takes to get further. “The current team has a bit more talent from top to bottom,”

he said. “And I think this group is driven and committed to our collective team goal of winning a championship.” COLIN CASTLETON: BIG MAN ON CAMPUS

Standing at 6 feet, 10 inches, Father Lopez star basketball player Colin Castleton is without doubt the most notable person on the school’s campus. While Castleton skies over all of his schoolmates, he’s also noticeable on the court — especially now. Although he was tall enough to dunk his freshman year — and taller than the rest of the basketball players — Castleton didn’t make the varsity roster. Instead, he played on the JV team. After that school year, not only did Castleton grow his game, but he also grew another four inches. Most days he practiced twice per day during the summer, deter-

mined to earn a starting position and to make a difference on the court. He would do just that. While the Green Wave struggled to win games, Castleton averaged 15 points, 11 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per contest last season. “That was when I realized I was going to be good,” he said. After last season, Castleton spent the summer playing AAU basketball with the Showtime Ballers, where she led the team with 15 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks, helping them reach the AAU 16U National Championship at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports. After his sophomore season performance, Castleton began to generate interest from college programs. So far, he’s earned SEE TOP SPORTS PAGE 10

few days ago, I asked a young lady what she expected from this upcoming year. Despondently, she replied, “Loneliness, frustration and boredom.” I assume she didn’t bother to make any New Year’s resolutions. Neither did many us, for the same reasons. Year after year, failed expectation after another, she has come to believe every New Year will play out dreadfully similar to her recent years. And she’s not the only one. Some of us was were once fervent in listing all the life changes we hoped to accomplish with the turning of every year, but, soon after the first of the month, we too experienced failure. On the other hand, all across the nation, gyms and religious buildings will fill up during the first few weeks of January, and yearly planners will fly off shelves, in hopes of people getting more organized this year. Other resolutions will be attempted from people who simply acknowledge they need to make life alterations and aren’t afraid to record them. While this may have included some of you (and myself) several New Years ago, you’ve concluded that failure is imminent, so there’s no point in wasting your time. I honestly don’t remember the last time I made New Year’s resolution, because it’s been so long. But, I think I’m ready to get back in the game. Throughout this new year, I will strive to make changes in my life, and I’m sure I will succeed at times and probably fail at others. But, at least I’ll try, and why can’t the first of January be a starting date for my endeavors? After all, it is the day where

scholarship offers from 11 different schools, including Rutgers, James Madison, Robert Morris and South Florida. “It’s a blessing,” Castleton said. “I try to work as hard as I did when I wasn’t getting anything.” Castleton has not allowed the early success to get to his head. He’s vastly improved from his breakout season to now averaging 24 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks this year. His best game came against Deltona, where he went for 25 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks. Still only a junior, Castleton’s recruiting profile is expected to continue to rise. D’MARCUS ADAMS: IT’S NOT EASY PASSING THIS ‘BUC’

Photos by Bob Rollins

D’Marcus Adams reels in a touchdown pass against Seabreeze.

Mainland junior D’Marcus Adams has special talent on the football field and in track and field. The University of Central Florida agrees, having become Adams’ first — and only thus far — scholarship offer. But, before the Knights or Mainland knew of his abilities, Adams received recognition from early competitors on the football field and track. “I knew I had talent then, because they would compliment me after I beat them,” he said. Playing behind other Mainland talented receivers in the past few seasons, Adams saw very little of the field. Even this past season, he played as the third or fourth option, behind Tank Dell and Brian Jenkins. Nevertheless, Adams made the most of his chances. In his first two games, Adams amassed 358 yards and two touch-

downs. He would go on to record nearly 1,000 receiving yards and six touchdowns, including a three-touchdown playoff performance against Lake Okeechobee. Previous to breaking out on the football field, Adams, as a sophomore, excelled in track and field. He led the Bucs to team district and regional championships by winning four individual district titles and two region titles. He went on to lead Mainland to a fifth-place state finish with three Top 3 individual state placements. With track season approaching, Adams hopes to repeat his success and improve his state meet finishes. REIANA JOHNSON: BECOMING A ‘BROKEN RECORD’

What began for Reiana Johnson as a hobby to keep busy and not waste time has now become a record-breaking career. The Seabreeze senior weightlifter was encouraged by her softball teammates to try weightlifting as a means to not waste from

softball season to softball season. Since joining the team, Johnson has broken school records, won season meets, a district title, placed third at regionals and 12th at states last season. She’s only been lifting the last two years. Along with a new, successful career, Johnson has gone from shy to confident, thanks to lifting. “I didn’t like to talk to people, but at meets I’ve met a lot of new people at our school and other schools,” she said. “And, since I’m often lifting last, most of the eyes are on me. So, I’ve learned to carry myself with more self-esteem.” Johnson has already broken her last season’s bench press and clean and jerk records with 175 (bench) and 155 (clean) for a total of 330 pounds. Johnson hopes to again reach the state final meet and place in the Top 6 to earn a medal.

we begin a new calendar, a new count to 365 days, among other starts. So this year, I plan to accomplish these: 1. Lose 30 pounds. 2. Read Christian and secular literature every day. 3. Exercise at least five times per week. 4. Take my wife on a date every week. 5. Step out of more of my comfort zones. I spoke with another young lady Sunday night, and she seemed to still believe in the power of the New Year. After telling me she planned to read her Bible every day, she exclaimed, “New year, new me.” Whether she only succeeds for a quarter or half the year, and whether I achieve any of my resolutions, the truth is that I will have gotten further along in accomplishing my goals than if I never make any. Happy New Year!

YOUR NEIGHBORS Teachers of the Year Meet the teachers of the year from all nine Ormond Beach schools. BY EMILY BLACKWOOD AND WAYNE GRANT

Tomoka Elementary Kim Williams

Hinson Middle School Cassandra Temple Cassandra Temple loves her job at Hinson Middle School, but when she was a young woman, she never thought she would become a teacher. Her original major at the University of Central Florida was public relations, and she had to take a required language arts class. She enjoyed it, and her husband, Lawernce Temple Jr., encouraged her to try out teaching. “He takes all the credit now,” she said, laughing. “But I love interacting with the kids. There is nothing like that ‘ah-ha’ moment when the light bulb goes off. I live for that.”

Cassandra Temple and her husband, Lawerence Temple Jr.

Pine Trail Elementary Yvonne Walker Yvonne Walker, 66 and a firstgrade teacher at Pine Trail Elementary School, is teaching her final year. “It’s my retirement year,” she said. “It’s hard to let it go.” Walker said teaching is her calling. After filling in for a teacher at Warner Christian Academy in South Daytona, she decided teaching is what she should be doing, so she went to night school from 1977 to 1990 at Daytona State University and UCF, getting a master’s degree in early education. She has now taught the parent of a former student. One of her former students is now a teacher. This is Walker’s fourth year at Pine Trail, where she will end her career at the end of the school year. “What’s hard (about retirement) is I love it,” she said. Walker said students are all different, and she believes in differentiated education. There are 19 computers in her class — she

The best part of teaching is seeing that light bulb come on when a student suddenly gets it, Kim Williams said. “I feel like I’ve done my job,” said Williams, 54. Williams, who grew up in Ormond Beach and attended the University of Central Florida,

has taught for 26 years, the last 16 at Tomoka Elementary School. She now teaches second grade. She likes to motivate students by setting a goal and offering a reward, such as pizza for lunch, a book students want, or stickers or candy. Later, she said, those second graders will understand how important education is and will be self-motivated. “Every day, I try to think of something new to get them hooked,” she said. Communication with parents is also important: Williams wants to know about students’ home lives to determine if any of the children need special attention. All of the kids have different needs, she said, and this should be kept in mind when setting standards and requirements. “They can all learn, but not all in the same way,” she said. “Every child is different.”

Osceola Elementary School Janet Dockery

provided 17 of them on her own — which allows students to advance at their own pace. “They all have talent, but in different ways,” she said. “I want to help them be all they can be. They don’t all have to go to college.” She believes in getting parents involved and building “unity in the community.”

Working with kids always came naturally to Janet Dockery, so becoming a teacher was a nobrainer. Her recognition as Teacher of the Year comes in part from her effort to restart her school’s African-American Read-In program, which is held in celebration of Black History Month and features Bethune-Cookman students and African-American leaders in the community reading students books written by African American authors. “I love when students remember you,” she said. “They’ll come up to you later on and remember how you helped them with something particular. It’s great.” SEE TEACHERS PAGE 16

Teachers of the Year

FROM PAGE 15

Ormond Beach Middle School Carol Furches

Mainland High School Jason Kester

Even after teaching students at Ormond Beach Middle School for a total of 12 years, Carol Furches still loves it. And this of course has nothing to do with the fact that she attended class there when she was a middle-schooler. “I remember my science teacher said, ‘You really have to like this age,’” she said. “And I do. It’s my favorite age. I like the fact that every day is fresh and that every child is different.” She currently teaches intensive reading classes.

Jason Kester remembers watching Robin Williams in “Dead Poets Society,” when he was a kid and wishing he had a teacher like that. Now as the director and chef instructor of Mainland High School’s Academy of Hospitality and Culinary Arts, he gets a chance to be that teacher every day. “Kids appreciate classes with challenges,” he said. “There are some really tough days, but if you can reach just one student, it’s worth it.”

Pathways Elementary Julie Zimmerer

Julie Zimmerer, 39, teaches third grade at Pathways Elementary School, where she has been throughout her 15-year teaching career. She was born in Connecticut and moved to Ormond Beach when she was 12 years old and later attended Ormond Beach Middle School and Mainland High School. Zimmerer said she loves teaching and seeing the students learn new things, and she tries to make learning fun. She uses “literature units,” and engaging lessons with clickers or games. Being able to involve students in the learning process and keep them excited is key to their success, she says. She especially enjoys the actual “teaching” part of her job, when she is in front of the students or working with them in small groups or one-onone. She believes in establishing a strong emphasis on parent involvement and has offered after-school parent training workshops and provides communication opportunities on the third-grade website. She has found offering rewards or other incentives for learning to be useful techniques.

John Kingsley Dowling

Seebreeze High School Lynne Seeber

“I am humbled when students share with me that being in my class has made a difference in their lives,” said Lynne Seeber, AVID coordinator and elective teacher at Seabreeze High School. “I love when they tell me that their grades have improved or that the skills they developed in my class helped them ace a test.” One of foundational pieces of the AVID (Advanced via Individual Determination) curriculum is

Former long time Ormond Beach resident , John Kingsley Dowling died peacefully at his home in Cumming, GA on December 25th, 2016, at the age of 85.

Ormond Beach Elementary Dominic Scardigno the tutorial, Seeber said. Students can bring Points of Confusion from any core class and seek help from their peers, tutors and their teacher. As a child, Seeber said she was always teaching the neighborhood kids. Later, when she had sons, she followed them into the classroom as a parent volunteer. “The fulfillment I experienced motivated me to become a teacher,” she said. Last Christmas, she had dinner with 17 former fifth-grade gifted students, and they each shared their favorite experience from the class. “One young woman who is now a teacher in her own elementary classroom is actually using one of my creative lessons she remembers from our year together. How amazing is that?” Seeber said. Asked what changes she would like to see, Seeber said standardized testing should be reduced. Born in New York, Seeber, 58, moved to Ormond Beach in 1987. She is in her 26th year with Volusia County Schools.

John is survived by his four children and their spouses; J. Scott and Susan Dowling of Ormond Beach, FL, Karen and Jim McLellan of Aurora, CO, Jeff and Candy Dowling of Charlotte, NC, and Shannon and Greg Erbs of Cumming, GA. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; Zack and Josh McLellan, Carter and Cooper Dowling, Emma, Luke, Jack and Libby Erbs. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews spread throughout the United States. He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Ruth Robertson Dowling and his two sisters, Betty Spratt and Beryl Swiatkowski.

Dominic Scardigno’s priority every day is to have as much fun as he can teaching his students at Ormond Beach Elementary School. A teacher there for 13 years, Scardigno is known for the many phrases he gives his fifthgrade class. “I’ve always loved the act of teaching,” he said. “You get the experience of helping children develop and prepare them for life.”

John was born on December 3rd, 1931, in Providence, RI, to Reverend Herbert John and Elizabeth Full Dowling. He graduated from the Lenox School in Lenox, MA, and is an alumni of Duke University prior to serving in the US Navy. A celebration of John’s life is scheduled for January 7, 2017, at 11:00 am with a visitation one hour prior at Ingram Funeral Home in Cumming, GA. Acknowledgments and condolences may be sent to Ingram Funeral Home at 210 Ingram Ave., Cumming, GA 30040. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Halifax Urban Ministries at 215 Bay St, Daytona Beach, FL 32114, in memory of John K. Dowling.
