มติปีใหม่ แท้จริงแล้วธรรมเนียมปฏิบตั อิ ย่างชาญฉลาดของมติปใี หม่นี้ มีประโยชน์เป็นอย่างยิง่ ทีไ่ ม่เพียงเป็นตัวช่วยส่งเสริมชีวติ และเป็น ตัวชี้วัดความก้าวหน้า มติปีใหม่มีคุณค่าพอที่จะแนะแนวทางให้ เกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงของชีวิตภายในปีใหม่นี้ และกระตุ้นให้เกิด การด�ำเนินการ ท�ำไมเราไม่ฉวยโอกาสนี้ให้เป็นโอกาสส�ำหรับแต่ละสโมสร เพือ่ ก�ำหนดจุดยืนของสโมสรในช่วงกลางปีดว้ ยมติแห่งปีของสโมสร โรตารี ท่านคงยังจ�ำได้วา่ ท่านประธานทานากะ(RI) ได้เสนอแนะแนว ทางไว้สามประการ ได้แก่ สโมสรทีแ่ ข็งแกร่ง โครงการทีย่ งั่ ยืน และ ภาพลักษณ์ที่น่าจดจ�ำ อันดับแรก เพือ่ เสริมสร้างความเข็มแข็งให้กบั สโมสร นัน่ คือ การทีเ่ ราอยูใ่ นสภาพแวดล้อมของการประชุมนัดพบทีม่ นั่ คงแข็งแรงทีจ่ ะส่งผลกระทบมาถึงสมาชิกในสโมสรนัน่ เอง หาก จ�ำนวนสมาชิกคงที่หรือแม้กระทั่งลดลงไปเรื่อยๆ สโมสรแห่งนั้นจะได้รับการพิจารณาว่าเป็นสโมสรที่แข็งแกร่ง

ในทางตรงข้ามหากจ�ำนวนสมาชิกเพิ่มขึ้น สโมสรแห่งนั้นจะถูกมองว่าประสบความส�ำเร็จอย่างมากในหัวข้อนี้

New Year’s Resolutions

The quaint custom of New Year’s resolutions is

actually helpful to many, if only to help enforce life’s milestones and to serve as a measure of progress. Their value as life-changing guidelines for the year – stimulants to action – is less clear.

Why not take advantage of this opportunity, each

club, to determine where we stand, mid-Rotary year, on this year’s Rotary resolutions.

You will recall that RI President Tanaka offered

three: strong clubs, sustainable projects and memorable

imaging.

First, strengthening clubs: By this, we mean having a healthy meeting environment as reflected

in a club’s membership numbers. If these numbers hold, or even decrease very slightly, then that club will be considered healthy.

On the other hand, if the number of members increases, that club will be seen to be very

successful in this area.

As always, the membership growth we seek is not only a matter of numbers, but of active

and interested participants. The people we want as Rotarians are those who have reached a point in their lives where they can acknowledge the interconnectivity that links us all, and where they feel confident that they have something to contribute to improving the greater good.

Time is their most important contribution, so potential members must be expert at time

management in order for their Rotary work to fit in with their occupational and family commitments. For time reasons, finding members within comfortable commuting range of your weekly meetings is a must. A very specific New Year Resolution for smaller clubs might be to increase membership numbers to equal the requirement for chartering a new club: 25 members.

President Tanaka’s second goal or resolution is to insure that the thousands of projects clubs

manage around the world every year are ultimately sustainable. “Sustainable” does not mean, “repeated over and over again.” Sustainable means designing projects that with proper mentoring will continue to reward stakeholders even when the initiating Rotary club re-directs its resources to other challenges.

When The Rotary Foundation (TRF) Future Vision plan comes online for all clubs on 1 July of

this year, the sustainable objective will become more pronounced. This is because all TRF projects

of all size will be required to demonstrate that they will be self-directing and sustainable after a reasonable period. Insufficient planning for a sustainable continuation will result in a rejected application.

A realistic club New Year Resolution in this regard might be to make it a point to factor in sustainability

planning for all club projects, no matter how funded. Not only do communities gain more from taking over ownership of projects, but also the clubs themselves are free to find alternative innovative ways to help improve the general good.

The third Resolution for this Rotary year is to work on strengthening Rotary’s image, its brand recognition,

among the general public.

Some of the clubs have ambitious plans for huge roadside billboards or for huge conferences or for

year-long radio campaigns. These are admirable initiatives. However, simply displaying the Rotary wheel on every occasion possible can be very effective. I am often asked to explain the funny gear logo that I wear on my lapel – an excellent opportunity for a quick description of (and invitation to) Rotary.

More, many of us have regular speaking opportunities. Whenever possible, it can be beneficial to

audiences for us to mention Rotary, its mission to help build world peace, and its “Service Above Self” motto. Even working the occasional mention of our great organization into normal conversation can help to raise awareness concerning Rotary’s vision and successes.

At the moment, Rotary is identified with Polio eradication. In some countries, like Canada, mentioning

Polio conjures up the Rotary name immediately. In other countries, the connection is considerably more nuanced... if it exists at all.

Rotary has public relations materials that can help promote an understanding of our work in general

and polio eradication in specific. Take advantage of the videos and share them with both potential and new members.

There you have it: three Rotary New Year Resolutions, and three specific targets with three specific

outcomes. As we begin a new calendar year, let’s renew our commitment to Service Above Self and more, aiming for Peace Through Service.

คุณก�ำลังไล่ตามเป้าหมายของตัวเองอยูห่ รือเปล่า มันยากที่จะเชื่อว่าเดือนธันวาคมมาถึงแล้ว เดือนแห่งการเฉลิมฉลองของครอบครัวชาวสโมสร โรตารี ใกล้จะถึงกลางทางของปีของทีจ่ ดั ตัง้ มูลนิธิ เสียแล้ว ถึงเวลาแล้วทีแ่ ผนทีเ่ ราวางไว้ควรจะบรรลุ เป้าหมายประจ�ำปี 2555-2556 และได้รับการ ประเมินผลใหม่ ค�ำพูด ค�ำมั่นสัญญา การกระ ท�ำต่างๆ ของเราควรได้รบั การปรับปรุงเพือ่ สร้าง ความมั่นใจว่าเราจะประสบความส�ำเร็จในสิ่งที่ เราวางแผนในช่วงปีที่ผ่านมา เวลาแห่งเดือนธันวาคมนี้ยังได้ให้สิ่งต่างๆ มากมายให้พวกเราได้คิด เป็นช่วงของที่เดือน ที่เราจะหยุดเพื่อคิดเรื่องวันเอดส์โลก วันอาสา สมัครนานาชาติ และวันพิทักษ์สิทธิมนุษยชน

สมาชิกสโมสรโรตารีชาวญี่ปุ่นกลุ่มหนึ่งได้ รวบรวมเพือ่ นพ้องเก่าๆ ทีเ่ จอกันจาก RI Convention พร้อมกันสมาชิกสโมสรจากประเทศออสเตรเลีย สมาชิกผูป้ กครองในสโมสรโรตารีชาวอิตาลีของ นักเรียนที่เข้าร่วมโครงการเยาวชนแลกเปลี่ยน สโมสรโรตารีคนหนึ่งได้มีโอกาสใช้เวลาร่วมกับ ครอบครัวทีด่ แู ลลูกชายของพวกเขาระหว่างอยูท่ ี่ ประเทศไทย กุมารแพทย์หลายท่านทีเ่ ป็นสมาชิก สโมสรโรตารีจากประเทศกาน่าได้เดินทางไปอยู่ กับแพทย์ท่านอื่นๆ ที่ประเทศเยอรมนี การใช้ประสบการณ์เช่นนั้นเกิดขึ้นได้ตลอด เวลาผ่านโครงการแลก Rotary Friendship Exchange ซึ่งเป็นโครงการแลกเปลี่ยนระดับ นานาชาติของสโมสรโรตารี บรรดาผู้เข้าร่วม จะได้รับประสบการณ์จากต่างวัฒนธรรม และ ก่อสร้างมิตรภาพได้โดยการอาศัยอยู่ที่บ้านพัก ของสมาชิกสโมสรโรตารีประเทศอื่นๆ โครงการ นี้มีความก้าวหน้าในความเข้าใจอันดีในระดับ นานาชาติและความสงบสุขผ่านการติดต่อข้าม แดนอย่างเป็นการส่วนตัวในขณะทีก่ ำ� ลังด�ำเนิน การพัฒนาสัมพันธภาพภายในสโมสรซึง่ จะน�ำพา มาซึ่งสัมพันธภาพและโครงการเพื่อการบริการ อื่นๆ

I am a French art director, illustrator and cartoonist. I have worked for many years in France, Switzerland, Germany, Tahiti, America, and for the past two years, here in Thailand. I have published four books of illustrations. The latest volume is entitled Siam Slices by Soukha Editions.
