Previously, people did not need to have a special day for performing yoga, because yoga was part and parcel of their lives. Unfortunately, now we need a special day to remind us to perform yoga, just as we need a day to remember our mother and father. In the olden days, people would wake up in the morning, bow down to Mother Earth, and then chant prayers and perform Surya Namaskarah, facing the sun. The whole time they were praying, they were exposed to rays of the rising sun. Today, in many countries, six or seven out of ten people have a vitamin D deficiency. Yoga is beneficial for our health, physical beauty and mental discipline. It helps reduce our cholesterol, and through this, to maintain cardiac health. It increases our bone strength. This is especially important, as the incidences of arthritis and osteoporosis are on a steep rise. It even helps improve our memory power. Yoga also creates powerful spiritual vibrations. These vibrations positively affect us, as well as others. It is like entering a perfume factory. Even after emerging, the sweet fragrance will remain on our body, pleasing both to others and ourselves. When we perform yoga with complete awareness, it purifies each and every cell in our body. The purpose of yoga is for our inner well-being. It does not belong to any particular faith or religion. It was passed on to us by the ancient seers for the well-being of humanity. Yoga helps us to reconnect with nature and eventually become one with God.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR B R A H M AC H A R I N I S H O B A N A
Amrita Yoga isn’t just about the asanas – it’s much more. It’s about aligning to our true Self. If yoga was only about aligning parts of the body, anyone with perfect bodily alignment would be Self-realized. Alignment is an insideout approach. Aligning to the inner presence enhances the panchakoshas (5 layers of the body as described in the yoga scriptures) and is the real alignment. This is what Amrita Yoga emphasizes. The practice itself guides us from movement to stillness, from gross to subtle. Working from the inside out, Amrita Yoga leads us to realignment with our own true Self.
great teachings into our programs and our lives. We are committed to upholding Amma’s example of love and selflessness, bringing India’s rich and ancient tradition of yoga to future generations. We continue to offer yoga as an essential tool to experience the innate happiness within us. We are immensely grateful to Amma for allowing us to share Amrita Yoga. It is based on universal values that each of us may embrace to unfold our full potential. Furthermore, we are eternally grateful to each one of our precious volunteers for their selfless service. Amrita Yoga could not have grown to what it is today without them. We also offer sincere gratitude to Swami Amritaswarupananda Puri, Vice-Chairman of Mata Amritanandamayi Math and the President of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. Despite his many responsibilities, he has been so generous with his support and assistance.
By utilizing breath, chanting, and awareness, Amrita Yoga moves us beyond the asana and breath into stillness and our innate silence. Amrita Yoga supports us to establish a positive and harmonious lifestyle. This experience of attunement extends into our family life and resonates with everything in creation. Thus, Oneness, the goal of yoga, becomes part of our day, not something far away that we have to strive for.
Finally, we give the deepest thanks to Amma. We are all so fortunate to have Amma’s presence Amrita Yoga has a long history of outreach, serving communities globally. Our curriculum is and guidance. She is our Mother, and our rooted in Sanatana Dharma and inspired by the Aadiguru — First Teacher. living example of Amma. Thus, we infuse these

WHO WE ARE
AMMA S ATG U R U S R I M ATA A M R I TA N A N DA M AY I D E V I
Her Holiness Sri Mata Amritanandamayi is known throughout the world as 'Amma' or Mother, for her selfless love and compassion towards all beings. Her entire life is dedicated to helping the poor and those suffering physically and emotionally. Amma has embraced and comforted more than 38 million people. WHO WE ARE
Amrita Yoga was born from the divine resolve and unconditional compassion of renowned spiritual leader and humanitarian, Satguru Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (Amma). Focusing on Awareness with Heart-centered intention, Amrita Yoga transcends the physical asana practice to deepen self-awareness to experience the interconnectedness of all life. The practice creates inner and outer balance and harmony so that our true potential is realized.
The Director of Amrita Yoga, Brahmacharini Shobana, is the head of this department. VISION
Amma’s vision for Amrita Yoga is a holistic breadth of yoga courses that are taught in the spirit of love and service, providing a practical way for people worldwide to lead Heart-centered lives and to discover their true nature. MISSION
To provide a comprehensive yoga program that is rooted in the ancient and practical universal principles taught by Satguru Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (Amma). Amrita Yoga students cultivate a holistic attitude (mano bhavana), embrace practical Vedanta, gain physical strength, mental equanimity and enhanced awareness of their hidden abilities.
FORMALIZED
Under Amma’s guidance, Brahmacharini Shobana was tasked with formalizing a school of yoga in accordance with Amma’s vision. Amrita Yoga classes were formally introduced at Amritapuri in 2004 for Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham students and at various Amrita Vidyalayam schools in India. In 2017, the Department of Amrita Yoga was formalized under Amrita Darshanam, International Center for Spiritual Studies at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus.

four main paths of yoga: Bhakti Yoga (yoga of devotion), Jnana Yoga (yoga of wisdom), Karma Yoga (yoga of selfless action), and Raja Yoga (yoga of contemplation, creativity and meditation). Reflecting Amma’s guidance, the core program content and training methods focus on the theme Awareness with Heart-centered intention. Amrita Yoga bridges the gap between the ancient traditional Eastern practice and the practical, modern needs of the West. Adopting Amma’s philosophy of embracing all, Amrita Yoga offers programs relevant for everyone, be they young or old, male or female, and designed to encourage an ongoing practice of ‘the middle way.’ Our courses, classes and retreats cultivate selfintegration and interconnectedness to all of life, awakening hidden abilities and potentials.

L I V I N G YO GA Yoga practice is about connecting with the innate Self to live a truly integrated life. Since time immemorial, families in India have practiced yoga together, in the same way that they ate, worked and worshipped together. Yoga benefits both body and mind. From the beginning of Amritapuri ashram, Amma has encouraged all her children to follow a balanced, healthy lifestyle that includes daily sadhana with yoga practices and simple living.
that I knew hatha yoga, and she wanted to see my asanas (yoga postures).” At the end of the sessions, Amma told Kusuma to teach yoga to the ashram residents. During the 1990s, the green roof of theKali Temple at Amritapuri ashram hosted one full day of meditation every week. For many years, Amma participated for almost 12 hours of that day with the ashramites and led meditation, offered satsanga, prasad and darshan. At around noon Amma would lead the group with a few simple movements ending with 15-20 minutes of Savasana. Several of us have witnessed Amma demonstrating the highest state of breath retention, a special kind of pranayama called Plavini Pranayama while swimming at the ashram swimming pool, floating effortlessly like a lotus leaf, as mentioned in the yoga scriptures.

Amma’s conversations on yoga with ashram visitors and residents demonstrate her commitment to uphold the lifestyle and wisdom of ancient India. Amma often emphasizes the four main paths of yoga and how they complement each other. Amma says, “Yogasanas can be performed in two different ways, as a technique of meditation and as an exercise for the internal organs.” In Awaken Children, there is a documented conversation from 1983, where Amma discusses living yoga. Amma explains that yoga is an experience expressed in day-to-day life. It is not just a daily asana practice on the mat for 20 to 60 minutes, it is the connection to the essence of life itself. Thus, yoga practice is not just a part of life, but is the substratum underlying every action, every movement and every breath of our life. Gretchen Kusuma McGregor, a resident of Amritapuri since 1985 and originally from the USA, recalls her experiences with Amma doing yogasana in her book In the Shelter of Her Arms: "One morning, Amma called me to her room shortly after breakfast. Someone had mentioned

by enlivening the deepest motives and the intentions within. When we live from the hrdayam, we access this innate inner intelligence to lead a balanced life with creativity and intuition. This is important for o ne's growth and increases personal effectiveness resulting in a fulfilled life. This is living yoga. Amma says, “We should enquire into the very source of that power, which exists within ourselves." Amma also exhibits her connection to the source by demonstrating her tireless action of hugging for the past forty years. When asked by a journalist if she was not tired hugging several million people, Amma responded that if one is connected to the source of energy, there is no tiredness. In the early days, visitors and brahmacharins (practicing monks and nuns) would meditate for more than eight hours a day. Each had a minimum self-practice of Surya Namaskarah. This is an asana series which expresses gratitude and connection with the source of wisdom, symbolically represented by the Sun, Lord Surya. Thus, the practice was an expression of the inner Self, transcending the physical movements with greater meaning.
the ancient universal values is more important than ever to maintain a healthy body and mind. From the very beginning, Amma guided the yoga program to ensure it followed the highest tenets of Sanatana Dharma (Eternal Wisdom), India’s philosophy and ancient traditions. For this reason, the ashram has offered yoga classes since its early days. Teachers from Amritapuri and elsewhere travelled to many cities and villages to offer yoga classes to all who were interested. Read more in Outreach. A M R I TA YO G A , A S C H O O L O F YO G A

“A child’s mind is like freshly laid cement. If anyone steps in it, the imprint remains forever.” Amma Yoga is for all ages. Asana practice is suitable for every child, including differently-abled children. Studies show that to function optimality we need a good connection between the body and the brain. This connection improves our learning ability. Amrita Yoga offers a variety of programs specifically designed for young yogis. Our programs help children become self-sufficient, build their self-esteem and enhance their creativity, paving the way for a life of lasting happiness. At the same time, yoga assists them in becoming stronger, more balanced and flexible in both mind and body. We emphasise the yogic tradition of ancient India. Yogis revered every object and living being in creation, and thus lived in harmony with nature — inside and out. This approach to education integrates universal values from a young age to establish a future of hope, peace and social engagement.

peace and harmony in the world. Mata Amritanandamayi Math enthusiastically embraces this opportunity to honor Indian tradition. Through the annual IDY activities, Amrita Yoga hopes to promote harmony within ourselves, with others, and with the whole of creation. On this day, the differences between nations, religions, and traditions are dissolved as people come together to practise yoga and experience the power of harmony, the strength of global unity, and the expression of our highest potential.
Addressing the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 27, 2014, the Honourable Prime Minister of India urged the world community to adopt an International Day of Yoga (IDY). On December 11, 2014, the 193 member UNGA approved the proposal by consensus with a record 177 co-sponsoring countries to establish 21st June as International Day of Yoga. THE P OWER OF HARMONY
The world is undergoing difficulties and challenges, and the global community is lacking harmony. In particular, nature is disturbed. Amma often speaks about how Mother Nature is a reflection of our own inner nature. When our minds are disturbed, so is Mother Nature. Amrita Yoga practice creates harmony between inner nature and Mother Nature. When the mind, body and intellect are in harmony through yoga, the individual consciousness becomes united with the Universal Consciousness. This is the power of yoga— the power of harmony.
