The Oro Valley Parks & Recreation department is pleased to present the Fall 2013 program guide. The Department manages Town parks and trails, recreation programs, cultural and historic resources and the Oro Valley Aquatic Center.
Many programs and activities include a phone number or other registration information, but you can always register online by visiting us at www.orovalleyaz.gov/parksandrec and selecting the “Register for classes” button from the right-hand menu.

AQUATICS The new Oro Valley Aquatic Center celebrated its grand opening in March 2013 after a $5 million upgrade. This new facility is competition-ready and full of family-friendly amenities for guests of all ages! The Aquatic Center is open yearround with an average water temperature of 80 degrees. AQUATICS PROGRAMS SATURDAY GROUP SWIMMING LESSONS • Preschool – Students learn water safety, survival skills and foundational swimming concepts in a safe and fun environment. Skills are age-appropriate, allowing students to achieve success on a regular basis. • Level One – The objective of this level is to help students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely. Students will learn elementary water skills. • Level Two – Designed to give students success with fundamental skills and learn to float without support. Students will also learn basic self-help rescue skills.
PRIVATE & SEMI-PRIVATE SWIMMING INSTRUCTION BY DOLPHINS OF THE DESERT SWIMMING ACADEMY Personalized instruction for the specialized swimmer, the triathlete, long-distance swimmers and open-water swimmers. • Level Three – Students learn to coordinate front and back crawl. Introduce elementary backstroke and the fundamentals of treading water. • Level Four – Students develop confidence in strokes learned thus far and improve other aquatic skills. Breaststroke, sidestroke and wall turns are introduced. • Level Five – Students learn coordination and refinement of key strokes. Butterfly, open turns and feet-first surface dives are introduced. RECREATION CRAZY FOR HORSES KIDS FALL & WINTER CAMPS AT ROLLING HILLS RIDING ACADEMY Children spend time on horseback, riding both Western and English styles. They will learn about horse behavior, language, interpreting what the horse is thinking, horse care and grooming, equine anatomy, and colors and breeds of horses. They will do crafts, go on trail rides and play games on horseback. Emphasis is placed on the relationship with the horse and safety. There are helmets and boots to loan students that do not have their own. Instructors emphasize safety and are well trained in their riding discipline. ADVENTURES IN HISTORY & CULTURE AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS AT STEAM PUMP RANCH Drama - Children will prepare for a dramatic production based on stories from history to be performed at the Steam Pump Ranch Festivals. Gardening - Children will learn to plant and harvest crops. They will learn what it takes to be a successful gardener in the Sonoran Desert; they will harvest crops that were planted in the summer and early fall, and plant for the fall/winter/spring season. INTRODUCTION TO ARCHERY This program is for youth interested in archery. DOG OBEDIENCE WITH SUBLIME K-9 DROP-IN OBEDIENCE CLASS This is a unique and ongoing class developed to build a solid foundation in obedience while strengthening the bond between you and your dog. Whether you want to learn the basics or advance to a competitive level of dog training, this is the class for you!
Your dog will be exposed to new dogs and people on a weekly basis. We will teach the basics: sit, down, stay, come, heel, etc., and we’ll advance you and your dog where needed. The much-anticipated link between the western and eastern sections of the Cañada del Oro Shared-Use Path will begin construction in September, and is expected to be completed during the winter of 2013. The project, along the Cañada del Oro (CDO) Wash, from First Avenue to Steam Pump Village, will provide a 0.6 mile connection between the existing sections of the path.

THE CAÑADA DEL ORO SHARED USE PATH PROJECT - FINAL PHASE (First Avenue to Steam Pump Village)
The project includes a 12-foot-wide paved path, landscaping, a prefabricated bridge to cover a gap in the bank protection, and art elements. The new path section will also provide access to Steam Pump Ranch, and will complete a connection that will allow users access to employment centers, restaurants and shopping by utilizing a seven-mile corridor along the Town’s washes.
