Dear Friends, Welcome to the second production of our 2018-2019 Broadway Series, School of Rock. While you are familiar with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s music from such hit shows as The Phantom of the Opera, Evita, CATS and others, you are going to be surprised when you hear his music in School of Rock. If you didn’t know it was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, you might never believe it is his music. Likewise, it might take a few minutes to believe that it is the young person on stage in front of you playing the music. These actors’ level of professionalism and talent will leave you amazed. It is obvious that these young people did not just pick up an instrument the night before they auditioned for School of Rock and faked their way through. These kids are musicians of the highest caliber. What you are witnessing tonight is the power of arts education! These performers are appearing on our stage because somewhere, sometime, they were introduced to the performing arts. Study after study has proven how exposure to the arts help children become better prepared for the future. In 2002, it was demonstrated that school children exposed to drama, music and dance are more proficient at reading, writing and math. In 2009, a study showed that arts education improves graduation rates. And in 2010, a study in our neighboring state of Missouri confirmed a link between arts education and fewer disciplinary actions, lower truancy and higher test scores. The list of studies goes on and on. Arts education is a powerful tool to aid in the development of young minds. At the Orpheum and Halloran Centre, we believe in the transformative power of arts education. We offer an extensive selection of classes, workshops, camps and performances to help the young people of the Mid-South prosper. I encourage you to investigate our offerings, either by picking up a brochure from the concierge desk in the lobby or online at orpheum-memphis.com. If there are barriers to your young person’s participation, let us know. We will work with you to try to take those barriers down. Together, we can make the world a better place, one student at a time. There is no greater gift you can give a child than the gift of the performing arts! Thank you for being here. I hope you enjoy the performance. Best,

Brett Batterson President & CEO Orpheum Theatre Group

ng A free camp for you people who stutter

November 17-18 • Halloran Centre This free two-day camp helps young people who stutter develop self-confidence, improve communication skills, and build community. Together in partnership with New York City-based SAY: The Stuttering Association for the Young, the Orpheum Theatre Group is thrilled to be one of only four cities across the country to host a Camp SAY. This camp offers team and confidence-building exercises, plus a broad variety of fun games and group activities to choose from, ranging from improvisation to arts and crafts. Campers also participate in small groups to create an original artistic work — such as a play, poem, song, dance, or visual art piece — under the guidance of Camp SAY’s seasoned leadership staff and the Orpheum’s teaching artists and programming staff. It’s truly a time of celebration and empowerment, with each child receiving the time they need to express themselves fully! Camp also includes an optional parent education workshop and support group, where parents can learn more about stuttering, share their experiences, and meet other parents of kids and teens who stutter.

Registration is now open at Orpheum-Memphis.com

When Sunset Boulevard joined School of Rock, Cats and The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway in February 2017, Andrew Lloyd Webber became the only person to equal the record set in 1953 by Rodgers and Hammerstein with four Broadway shows running concurrently. Other musicals he has composed include Aspects of Love, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita and Love Never Dies. He has co-produced his own shows including Cats and The Phantom of the Opera, and as a solo producer he has presented the groundbreaking Bombay Dreams which introduced the double Oscar-winning Bollywood composer AR Rahman to the Western stage. He owns seven West End theaters, including the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, the Palladium and most recently the St James, which reopened this year as The Other Palace to provide a unique London home for new musicals in development. He is passionate about the importance of music in education, and the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation has become one of Britain’s leading charities supporting the arts and music. In 2016, the foundation funded a major new national initiative which endowed the American Theatre Wing with a $1.3 million, three-year grant to support theater education opportunities for under-served young people and public schools across the U.S. His awards, both as composer and producer, include seven Tonys, seven Oliviers, a Golden Globe, an Oscar, the Praemium Imperiale, the Richard Rodgers Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre, a BASCA Fellowship, the Kennedy Center Honor and a Grammy for Best Contemporary Classical Composition for Requiem, his setting of the Latin Requiem mass which contains one of his best known compositions, Pie Jesu. He was knighted by Her Majesty The Queen in 1992 and created an honorary member of the House of Lords in 1997.

THEATRE ETIQUETTE As a courtesy to the performers and patrons, latecomers will be seated at an appropriate break in the performance. Turn off your cell phone and other electronic devices. The light and noise from cell phones and electronic devices are a distraction to performers and those seated around and above you. No text messaging, photography, or recording. Do not talk or whisper during the performance. Be conscientious about the noise you may be making while enjoying concessions or searching through your bag. You may be distracting or disturbing the patrons around you and the actors on stage. The Orpheum staff and our dedicated team of volunteer ushers work hard to accommodate modern crowds in our historic theatre. Please be patient as we work to serve you as best as possible. Certain productions may not be suitable for all ages. We recommend taking the time to determine which shows are appropriate for your children. Visit our website at Orpheum-Memphis.com or call our Box Office at (901) 5253000 if you have any questions. In order to ensure the safety of our guests, purses, briefcases, and bags may be inspected upon arrival. Firearms, knives, and weapons of any kind are prohibited inside the theatre. Other items not allowed inside the theatre include illegal drugs, laser pointers, fireworks, outside food and beverages, SLRs, DSLRs, video cameras, professional cameras, including external flash camera units or interchangeable/detachable lenses, and pets other than service animals. Larger items that have the potential to block walkways or disturb other patrons will need to be stored at coat check. For your convenience, we recommend refraining from bringing large bags to the theatre. Help us keep our venues secure — if you see anything suspicious, please tell an usher or other Orpheum Theatre Group representative.
