Breguet, the innovator.
Invention of the Breguet balance spring, 1795 The balance spring gives time rhythm and sets its rate – the key to a watch’s precision. With its many patented innovations, the Tradition 7047PT with fusee tourbillon pushes the limits of precision time-keeping by combining the accuracy of the Breguet balance-spring’s terminal curve, conceived in 1795, and the anti-magnetic properties of silicon. t rained on our wedding day. Right in the middle of my childhood pastor’s “leave and cleave” segment, the heavens opened up and showered us with a not-so-light drizzle. A few guests ran for cover, but I looked at my almost-bride and said “I’m not going anywhere,” she said “Me, either.” If we had to redo it, I think we’d have spent considerably more on better photography. It truly is the one thing that lasts forever after the big day. Thankfully, if you’re getting married in Anguilla, you’ll be spoilt for choice, as there are many great photographers resident on the island. We share some tips on getting the most out of your photographer for the day, and to ensure that you get stunning images you’ll be happy to look at years later. We speak with a few of the island’s talented planners and designers who have the ability to create just about any vision of the perfect day you could possibly imagine. They share insight on budgets, decor, flowers, and all the other little details that combine to make a special day memorable. We also share real, heart-warming love stories of couples who decided to commit to each other forever, right here in Anguilla. Finally, we take a look back at Anguilla weddings of yesteryear. It was a simpler time, and celebrations back then were as joyous and fun-filled, if not as lavish and spectacular, as those of today. As always, enjoy reading, and if you’re debating whether Anguilla is right for your nuptials, don’t. You simply can’t go wrong. Orrett H. Wynter Editor

ashion designer, poet, track coach, public speaker and pageant coach, all while being a full-time Customs Officer. Anguilla’s Alexis Ryan wears all those hats, and he wears them well. We caught up with the busy artist recently when he was on his way to meet a pageant contestant. “I used to be a (pageant) judge,” Ryan explains, “and then, I had some family members who were going into pageants, and as a way to help them build their self-esteem, I gave them a few pointers.” Since then, he has coached many contestants in speech and eveningwear competitions, and most of them have won those areas. It is through pageantry, in fact, that Ryan developed his interest in fashion, inspired to bring his own ideas to life by family members who were pageant contestants. At age 13, he took his first class in clothing and textiles. Ryan’s textile teacher encouraged him to develop and share his talents, and his first dress design was a prom dress for his twin sister. Then, in 2002, the Miss Anguilla Pageant commissioned Ryan to design two dresses that went on to win second and third place in the eveningwear segment. Ryan eventually started a clothing line called TheoChris Designs with his mother, Marilyn, as his partner and co-designer. Their creations have been featured at Essence of Style, Taste of the Caribbean, and Virgin Islands Fashion Week, as well as in Shabeau Magazine, Caribelle, and ITZCaribbean.com. “I do the designing, I come up with the concepts, I choose the fabrics, and she (Marilyn) creates them and brings them to life,” Ryan explains. Ryan is also passionate about working with kids as a track coach. “I try to design in the sports off-season because I’m heavily involved in sports,” he smiles. He coaches the Rainbow Rockets track team, and he also coaches at Valley Primary School. “I love to see children run,” he adds. With so many talents, it is hard to pigeonhole Ryan, but he likes to call himself “a poet who happens to design.” “I consider designing to be a God-given talent. It’s not hard; it comes naturally to me,” he admits. “Poetry is a little harder, but I tell people I see myself as a poet.” He has read at the prestigious Jamaica Poetry Festival, and his poetry is featured in Where I See The Sun – Contemporary Poetry in Anguilla, an anthology edited by Lasana M. Sekou that was published last year. In the 2015 Malliouhana Poetry Competition, he won first place in the senior category for his poem “Political Race.” continued on page 22

CLOCKWISE, FROM TOP Alexis with his mother, Marilyn (left) on the runway at the end of a TheoChris fashion show; When he’s not designing, he finds time to coach track and field; A self-styled ‘poetwho-designs’, Alexis admits that design comes naturally.
continued from page 20 Ryan says he enjoys the opportunities for travel that his interests offer him. For example, he recently represented Anguilla at the Caribbean Festival of Arts (Carifesta) in Guyana. “I was slated to be the second designer on the night of show two,” he shares. “However, when they saw the pieces that I’d brought, they moved me to be the finale designer. I count that as a great honour.” Currently, Ryan is working on rebranding his clothing style to include what he calls “everyday” clothing. He aims for a summertime launch of his new designs. Now seems to be the right time to promote a ready-to-wear line. “I think that (my) designs have grown over the last couple of years in terms of the clientele,” Ryan explains. “I’m finding these days, a lot of people express themselves through the Ankara fashions.” In addition to being a designer, Ryan considers himself a stylist. “Normally, I like to design for special occasions. So when people are going to events, parties, themed parties or whatever, it’s my job to go and source clothes or outfits for them to wear so that they can dare to be noticed, dare to stand out in the crowd. “When I first started, I was just designing for designing’s sake. Now, I know I have to cater each design to each niche customer. It’s a good feeling when you go to an event and you see somebody wearing something that you designed.” AXA

ow are Air Jordans and fine dining related? For most people, there is no connection. But, for Anguillian Shawn Webster, the two came together in a surprising way. After spending a great childhood on the island, Webster left to study the culinary arts. After working in a kitchen in London for a few years, he saw his career as a chef come to an abrupt halt after an accident-related injury to his arm. As fate would have it, his need for an employment change led him to work at England’s Childrensalon, a British online retailer of designer clothing for children. As Shawn recalls, “I grew up being addicted to shoes. There is a massive urban culture for footwear, and I always loved getting
DESIGN ANGUILLA MAGAZINE | ISSUE FOURTEEN
attention for what was on my feet.” The owners of Childrensalon, George and Michele Harriman-Smith, took him under their wing. “George and Michele are really big in the fashion industry. They taught me quite a lot about fashion and the way things should be made, so I was inspired by them.” Along the way, the chef-turned-clothing designer had to overcome his share of adversity, particularly in the form of criticism from others. “I had to overcome really harsh criticism — people’s idea of what they think was wrong or right,” describes Webster. His approach? “I create the product first and then I take the criticism. Criticism is actually a good thing sometimes.” In 2015, Webster launched his designer brand of footwear, Sug-Sean, whose name comes from his childhood moniker. “When I was growing up, I was into a lot of comic books and always wanted to be a superhero. I was really hyper!” he grins. “So, I was known as ‘Sugar’, and as I got older my friends shortened it to ‘Sug-Sean’.” Manufactured by Italian manufacturer Tacetti, the brand currently consists of seven footwear designs for adults and children. Webster draws his inspiration not only from his Childrensalon mentors but also from celebrities like Pharrell. While every designer hopes to become a household name, Sug-Sean wants to capture a sense of community. “When I started caring about the way I dress, I noticed people who wanted to wear urban gear and be different,” explains Sean. “They made it seem as if when you wore that type of brand, you were part of a tribe. I remember when I bought this really expensive Le Bain hoodie, I saw a guy in a similar one and we nodded at each other. Because we were both ‘with’ that kind of brand, we felt like we were connecting. I got addicted to that feeling part of a tribe.” Now, Shawn is looking at building his own tribe around his brand, which has also grown to include clothing and some accessories. He feels he’s prepared for the ups and downs that are sure to follow as he continues his unlikely journey. “Once you start doing something, once you put the idea out into the world you have to follow through with it,” he concludes. “That’s what I’m doing.” AXA

est End residents welcomed a new community centre in January of this year, joining the ranks of previously-developed facilities like Blowing Point Youth Development Centre, which opened in 2007. The West End Community Development Centre seeks to improve the lives of youth and adults alike through offering programmes in Communication Skills, Accounting, Information Technology, and Parenting Skills, among others. This community centre is attached to the Alwyn Allison Richardson Primary School, making it the first institution with an attached facility to serve the public. Given its proximity to the school, the Centre will also strengthen youth by providing convenient access to after-school guidance and help with assignments. The goal is to establish the Centre as a safe place for children to excel in their education, as well as to gain new skills that will enable them to pursue higher learning in the future. The newly-opened centre features a large computer room, classrooms, a small library, kitchen facilities, and two larger rooms that can serve as a location for meetings, classes and other activities, and physical recreation. These efforts have been funded in conjunction with the Department of Youth and Culture and the Ministry of Social Development, with the help of various community
partners. However, for the Centre to succeed in the future, support from the community at large is greatly needed. As Board Chairperson, Mrs. Edward Gumbs, explains, “The Department of Youth and Culture will be responsible for paying the Centre Manager and cleaner. But, funds have to be raised to assist with the purchasing of supplies. We also hope that volunteers from the Community will assist with fundraising as well as with their time.” The West End Community Development Centre is directed by Mrs. Edward Gumbs, Board Chairperson; Mr. Mark Romney, Vice Chairman; Ms. Tricia Richardson, Treasurer; and Glenneva Hodge, Public Relations Officer. T H E R E S TAU RA N T AT M A L L I O U H A N A CONTINUES ITS TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO THE ANGUILLIAN DINING SCENE
n November of 1984, British-born Leon Roydon opened the doors of Malliouhana, an upscale hotel and restaurant that grew to attract jet-setters from the islands and beyond. Under the direction of two-star Michelin chef Michel Rostang, the establishment garnered numerous awards, culminating in Condé Nast naming it one of the three Best Hotels for Food in the Caribbean and Americas. Patrons were delighted by Malliouhana’s extensive wine collection – one of the largest in the region, with nearly 75 pages of possibilities – and its classy ambience, complete with long-stemmed crystal goblets. Unfortunately, after more than two decades of impeccable service, Malliouhana closed its doors in 2011. Roydon, who passed away in May of 2014, continued to be involved with the management and direction of the hotel, but the downturn in the global and regional economy meant that the restaurant could no longer stay afloat. Exactly thirty years from the date Malliouhana welcomed its first guests, the doors reopened in late 2014 after a renovation process that spanned eighteen months. Half of the staff who worked at the original resort came back to help Auberge restore Malliouhana to its original glory – and beyond. The restaurant is now in the talented hands of chef Cupertino Ortiz, who comes to Anguilla after delighting guests in five-star establishments such as the Rosewood at Baha Mar in the Bahamas and Viceroy’s Sugar Beach in St. Lucia. continued from page 28 “Green and Clean” lunch menu with simple yet flavorful options like grilled fish and salad. “People are watching what they eat, whether they’re travelling or they’re living here – trying to find things that they can feel good about after they eat it,” he explains. A key component in the restaurant’s offerings is the sourcing of local ingredients, including lettuce, herbs, and tomatoes from Malliouhana’s own garden. Ortiz partners with local farmers and fishermen to source fresh meats and fish, particularly lobster, crayfish and snapper. His culinary creations aim to preserve the flavors of the foods, rather than to obscure them with seasonings and sauces. And, Auberge is rebuilding the wine cellar, including several from their own vineyards in California’s Napa region. Under the direction of sommelier Albert Lake, who also served as wine waiter for the original Malliouhana cellar, the collection currently consists of more than two hundred varieties of wine. Visitors to the restaurant at Malliouhana won’t find a tyrant in its kitchen. As Cupertino says with a warm smile, “We all are here to please our guests. If they have something in mind that they want to try, I have no problem with people changing the dishes on my menu. I want everyone to feel welcome!” Above all, Cupertino Ortiz and the other staff of Malliouhana hope to capture the essence of its former success while moving it forward into a new era. “I think Malliouhana has the potential to do great things. Anguillian people talk highly about this place and how great it used to be, “ says Ortiz. “We have guests that used to stay here before that are coming back – with expectations. Some of them want to see what they saw before, but others are asking what the new Malliouhana can do for them.” “I fell in love with this place,” he concludes.“It has magic.” AXA

rowing up in St. Kitts, Jerome Vanterpool knew that hard work was the doorway to success – and that the road would not always be easy. After studying home economics at a technical college and finding himself unable to get a job in a hotel, he took the only job he could find: as a paper boy in a local supermarket. Undaunted, he got his foot in the door at Fort Thomas Hotel as a dishwasher, working his way up through the ranks until catching the attention of the hotel’s French chef. “I begged him to teach me how to make steaks and sauces – on my own time,” Vanterpool recalls fondly. “I had that passion and that joy, so even though the money was small at the time, my aim was always to be the head chef one day.”

and decided to take matters into her own hands—literally. In 2015, Banks opened Good Korma, a

featuring
familiar items like tikka masala, balti, and spicy madras dishes. “I was lucky to have visited a number of restaurants in the UK where the owners and chefs allowed me to come behind the scenes, to see how to do the sauces and curries,” she relates. She’s also had the help of a chef from St. Maarten as she has refined her menu options and developed new recipes. In keeping with the style of the Indian restaurants in England, Good Korma focuses on take-away and delivery, rather than providing the service typically associated with a sit-down establishment. However, future plans include a small outdoor seating area with umbrellas and lights, for those who want to enjoy their rogan josh or dumplings right away.

Driven to Succeed
His dreams were first realized as he not only was promoted to sous chef, but later was the first chef in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis to win first prize in a Caribbean culinary competition. Vanterpool’s Anguillian roots eventually led him to the island, first to serve as chef at Mariners Cliffside Beach Resort, then later to Crystal Harbor, Sugar Beach, and Viceroy. He now draws on his wealth of industry experience to direct the menu at his own restaurant, Chef Ranger’s Place. His signature style is Asian-Caribbean fusion, though his establishment is more widely known for its pastas. Despite being located away from the beach, Vanterpool has seen no effect on the traffic to his establishment. “No matter where we go – it could be on a mountaintop! – people will come find me to get the pasta. We give people quality. They like it and they tell others, and I really appreciate that,” he says. And, if the name ‘Ranger’ rings a bell, it’s no wonder: it’s his stage name for his other passion, music. Crowned Calypso King of Anguilla in 2013, he is a familiar face among the island’s performers at festivals and other venues. He opted to use his reputation in entertainment to create instant name recognition for his restaurant. “Good food, affordable prices, and sticking to my motto: ‘Speed, Quality, and Consistency’,” Vanterpool explains, “will make Chef Ranger’s the place to be.” AXA

DANA MATHURA & JAMES LOLLO NEW YORKERS FOUND LOVE ONLINE, BUT THEIR DREAM WEDDING HAPPENED IN ANGUILLA.
A
fter Long Islanders James and Dana met on a dating site, James decided to pop the question with breakfast in bed. Nestled among mango slices, Dana’s favorite freshly-baked bread, and Ting (a drink from her native Trinidad) was the engagement ring. The couple’s cat and dog followed, each wearing a bowtie that read “Will you marry Dad?” Almost as soon as Dana said yes, the couple knew that Anguilla was the only choice for their wedding destination. “We both love the Caribbean and have yet to find an island that we love as much as Anguilla,” says the bride, a project manager for a software development company. The groom, a teacher of English as a Second Language, agreed that their wedding should be truly unique, not at a traditional hotel or resort. Mission accomplished: their nuptials were the very first to take place at Elodia’s on Shoal Bay East. At first, they struggled to find the right local professionals. Fortunately, the couple’s photographer, Derrys Richardson from Signature 7602 Studios, connected them with Amelia Vanterpool-Kubisch from Blue Sea Anguilla. Not only did Amelia find great people to do music, makeup, and hair, but she also smoothly handled other arrangements that weren’t originally on her agenda, such as transportation and ministerial services. On July 11, 2015, seventeen of James and Dana’s closest friends and family members witnessed their union, on Shoal Bay directly in front of Elodia’s. Dana remembers being caught off-guard by the wind, which nearly pulled her veil right from her head! As soon as the minister pronounced them man and wife, Dana eagerly handed the veil to her mother. Both the ceremony and the joyous reception that followed, complete with karaoke by Bruce from Elvis’ Beach Bar, hold treasured memories for Dana, not least because her father passed away unexpectedly only two weeks later. “I get to know that he saw me marry someone he was happy and proud to see me with,” she reflects, “and my memories of him are associated with such a great moment and beautiful location.” AXA ISSUE FOURTEEN | DESIGN ANGUILLA MAGAZINE

The pair met at the City Club in Lafayette, Louisiana, after the bride moved to the area to attend the university there in 2004. Their first experience with the island was back in 2005—Tres was well aware of Savannah’s fondness for relaxing on the beach and appreciation for great food, and so he declared Anguilla “perfect” after that initial visit. After a courtship spanning nearly a decade—Savannah suffered a stroke in 2006, and her rehabilitation was a long, difficult journey—Tres proposed at a restaurant in Dallas owned by ClubCorp, the same company that owns the establishment where they met. “I’m far from a ‘girly girl’; I prefer to do most things very low-key,” the bride says with a wide grin. “In the middle of our conversation, he got down on one knee, with the ring my best friend helped him find after months of searching. I still can’t believe he pulled it off—I’m almost impossible to surprise!” Tres and Savannah were married at Beaches Edge on June 11, 2015, surrounded by eighteen close friends and family members. All of the details were seamlessly arranged by Kristin from the resort, concierge Michelle, and Ernie from Couture Concepts. “The size of the villas, as well as their side-by-side set-up, made it perfect for our family and friends who joined us. In the early planning stages, the friendliness of everyone I spoke to, along with the pictures and reviews, made it clear that Beaches Edge was just what we were looking for.” AXA

ook! It’s a bride,’ exclaimed a tourist. Nash and I were taking our official wedding photos at Koal Keel in the Old Valley. His face expressed delight as if he had discovered a treasure, ‘Congratulations, you are beautiful,’ he said. I smiled at my new husband who leaned over and whispered in my ear, ‘you are gorgeous’ as our photographer captured the moment, one of many unforgettable moments that morning. My day started at 6 a.m. with hair and makeup. I was trusting and hadn’t briefed my stylist beforehand, relying instead on my sister’s expressions to gauge how I looked. The finished product transfixed me. Breakfast was delivered by a good friend who flew in for the wedding. Naturally exuberant, she simply stared and said, ‘Shelly, you are beautiful,’ as she reached forward to hug me. Fully dressed, I looked in the mirror and felt a kaleidoscope of emotions for which there were no words. Unprepared for the small crowd of staff in the hotel lobby waiting to see the bride, my mind registered their looks of wonder and big smiles. I was greeted with a big smile from guest I met the night before. She was up at 8:30 a.m. just to see me. There is something magical about a bride, a truth which has been held for centuries. Persons everywhere pointed and smiled enthusiastically when they caught a glimpse of ‘the bride.’ As I waited in the car, I felt the excitement of those I could observe. Skirts and hair of the wedding party blew wildly in the high breeze. Grateful for the moments, I had to inhale and exhale, everything faded away. My mind focused on the man I knew was waiting in front of the church. It was time. My father giver took my hand and we exchanged smiles. As we were entering the church, the doors slammed in our faces! We joked about it being a bad omen as persons rushed to hold the doors open. I focused on the one smiling face that mattered as I made my way down the aisle. We exchanged numerous smiles, glances and hand squeezes during the cer-

emony. I laughed along with our guests when Nash struggled to put my rings on my finger. We radiated joy when we were pronounced husband and wife. As we danced down the aisle, my mind took in the expressions of our guests. The happiness I saw on their faces mirrored our own. With all the flashing lights, I felt like I was on a red carpet. I was grateful for all the pictures that came in from friends and family, each capturing a different expression and a diverse range of emotions on our wedding day. How I felt on my wedding day and how I still feel today wasn’t captured in any picture or video. It is forever engraved in my heart and soul. AXA

hat makes you remember a wedding, party or other event forever? The reason for celebrating and the people attending tops the list—but the design and details can make the difference between a special event and a truly spectacular event. For 22 years, Black Orchid Florists has been creating breathtaking special events that Anguillians and people from all walks of life remember and treasure. Lorin Richardson, the artist behind the Black Orchid designs, initially set his sights on marine biology even though he was an exceptional artist from childhood. Growing up with his grandmother, who loved horticulture, he developed a love for plants at a very early age. Now, his floral designs blend this passion with his interest in abstract art and design. Lorin’s first design was for his cousin’s wedding: “It was beautiful—we had stuff hanging from the chandeliers, an arch filled with greenery and all kinds of flowers.” Another defining wedding in Black Orchid’s early days featured flowers from Dominica. “It was so much fun just arranging them in the church,” Lorin recalls. “We had floral arrangements lining the walkway 10 feet high with big tropical hanging flowers. We had to actually put police outside the door to stop tourists from coming in.” While he was humbled by the impact of his design on passersby, he needed to make sure everything remained intact for the event itself! A significant turning point for Black Orchid Florists was participating in a showcase for travel agents and top wedding planners from around the world. Lorin and his team wowed the crowd. continued on page 50

LEVELS We’ve tiered different elements throughout the design to create excitement and movement. We have candles that are low, as well as others that are taller, along with the vases which are at different heights. Everything has a purpose, with each angle you look at it giving a different feel and a different flow. We’ve taken cues from Feng Shui, to trick the eye, taking it to where we want to go and highlighting the elements that we want.
FORM AND FUNCTION We try to break up the sharp edges by using more organic shapes. We’ve added green trick (Dianthus) which is not as edgy as the mirrors. It helps to soften the whole tablescape. The curvy, black vases help to do the same thing as well.
LESS IS MORE With many mirrored elements which are already beautiful, adding details like ribbons might make it a bit over the top. We also didn’t want to have too many patterns, particularly with the beautiful tablecloth which, itself is a highlight. Even the flatware was a very clean, modern design, which helps reduce the visual clutter. We’ve used “ghost chairs” that we intend to be invisible, allowing everything else to be a part of the landscape.
MIRRORING The purple napkins tie the tablescape into the surroundings by borrowing from the bougainvillea in the landscaping. We’ve also emulated the lush, green grass, with little pops of green as well. The mirrored vases add another level of glamour—the sharpness, and edginess—plus they reflect everything else that’s happening. The large black vases provide an anchoring element, grounding everything, otherwise it feels as if it is all floating.

IN SITU The gazebo is the focal point, but we didn’t over-dress it, or make it too formal. Just enough to soften the columns, with flowers highlighting the area where the couple stands. The clear chairs allow the eye to appreciate the stone tiles, which are beautiful. Mirrored elements also pick up the stone, with pieces of driftwood providing a rustic contrast to the architectural feel of everything else.
DRAMA The silver lanterns, which we’ve used at different heights, create a welcoming entrance that guides you to where everything will happen. It points the way for the bride to walk through, with the warm glow of the candlelight bouncing off the shiny nickel material. The mirrored metal, along with the glass gives a continuous flow and interplay of light and reflections.
continued from page 48 “About 68 people came [to Anguilla] for this event,” he recalls. “We walked in with 200 business cards that day, and all 200 were gone within an hour.” The island’s wedding industry was still being developed at the time, and attendees were impressed with the professionalism and creativity of this local business. From there, Black Orchid grew at an unbelievable rate. “We kept on going until where we are today.” Adapting to the times has been key. “A wedding 10 or 15 years ago looks nothing like a wedding today,” Lorin explains. “You always have to keep yourself educated.” Over time, the concept has grown. From its focus on floral designs and gift baskets as Black Orchid Florsts, the company now plans weddings, private and corporate events as part of a distinct events design, management and rental entity called Black Orchid Events. Black Orchid is also expanding to nearby St. Maarten and St. Kitts and Nevis under a new brand, “Brilliance.” In 2014, Black Orchid launched Brides and Bubbly, an annual bridal show aimed at helping Anguillians learn about local wedding resources. “We also invite other companies to come in and showcase what they can offer,” says Lorin. “A lot of companies that have come to the show over the last two years have shown growth.” Black Orchid pays for the space and asks other companies for a modest donation to participate in the non-profit event, hoping to encourage local providers to market their offerings and connect 50

ALL TOGETHER NOW The setup for the ceremony as well as the dinner borrow elements from each other, to create a cohesive look for the entire ensemble. We’ve used mirrored elements in both, along with lots of glass and crystal elements, as well as metal. Also soft candle lighting, which adds warmth and colour was used in both, with combinations of tall and short elements, adding visual interest.
with local customers who might not be aware of their services. “We love when people come to the show and they’re surprised to see the talent and range of services that are available right here in Anguilla,” Lorin explains, “from makeup artists, to caterers and cake designers. It’s absolutely a win-win for everybody. We want everyone to benefit from our years of experience.” With the level of detail and preparation required for each event—from detailed walkthroughs to CAD drawings showing the placement of every single candle— Lorin is keen to credit his team, which includes 10 year-round staff and adds as many as 25 more to help during events. “We can’t do anything without our team,” he says. “One of our major objectives for this year is to do a lot of training, so we can look at increasing responsibilities and grow the team along with the brand.” In the coming years, Lorin hopes to establish “Brilliance” throughout the Caribbean. Additionally, excitement is high as construction of Black Orchid’s new Anguilla facility nears completion. The three-storey, 12,000-square-foot facility will feature underground, temperature-controlled storage for flowers, open areas for showcases—including future Brides and Bubbly Expos—and other events, and a sky lounge on the top floor. “We aim to create holistic experiences that our customers can enjoy,” Lorin concludes. “We want to build a company that started in Anguilla, but carry our standards throughout the region, and to the wider world.” AXA

Once you know what you want, the next question (and possibly the most important) is how much can you spend? While your planner should be able to find affordable ways to make fireworks explode as you say “I do”, or get the island’s hottest DJ to keep your guests dancing at your reception, be realistic with how much you are able to spend for your wedding. That will help you – and your team of service providers – determine exactly what is possible.

There are specific regulations in Anguilla that must be followed in order to have a legal wedding. First, plan to be on the island for a minimum of 48 hours prior to the ceremony. Second, in order for it to be legally binding, a locally-registered officiant must make the declaration of “I now pronounce you…” A friend, relative, or another person of your choice can conduct the entire ceremony, minus that declaration. Finally, if you’d prefer to simplify matters, you can be legally wed elsewhere before arriving in Anguilla and then have the ceremony here with no additional requirements. AXA 52

Even social media apps like Pinterest can give service providers a feel for color schemes, bouquets, or even hairstyles, allowing them to create a detailed proposal for their services. However, the characteristic that most ensures a happily-ever-after wedding day is flexibility. As Hodge describes, “There are different elements that come together to make a wedding happen. We need to pick the few things that we’re not going to compromise on at all, then find the ones we can find less expensive alternatives for.”

ECO/RUSTIC SEATING Benches and natural bamboo seats, sometimes with cushions for added comfort, often take the place of traditional chairs. FEATURE ANGUILLA WEDDINGS | VENUES SAND TO THE BEACH Anguilla weddings are synonymous with weddings on the beach. Gorgeous sunsets, clear skies, and happily-ever-after, what’s not to love? Unfortunately, it only takes five minutes of rain or a higher than average tide to turn that dream into a nightmare. Here are three misconceptions about beach weddings and how to plan for them.
YOU REALLY DO NEED A TENT
Anguilla is sunny,
but not all the time. If you don’t want months of planning to be spoiled by an unexpected downpour that soaks the wedding party and the food, then a tent as a necessity, not an annoyance.
THEY AREN’T ALWAYS CHEAPER

both rental and labour. Having the reception
hoosing a venue for your wedding celebration can be among the most difficult choices you’ll have to make. Anguilla has a range of different settings for a perfect ceremony, so your choice will depend on a combination of your budget, your religious values, and quite possibly just how you want your wedding pictures to look. We’ve laid out your main options for venues here in Anguilla, along with things to consider for each, as well as tips from local experts to help you make the best decision for your special day.
CHANGING TIDES Depending on the time of year,
C
Private villas have much of the same location benefits as resorts. Many are on the beach, and can accommodate a beachfront ceremony, others have lush gardens with great views that make for stunning backdrops for your photos. Larger properties can often accommodate the key members of the family and bridal party, and the added privacy (no overly curious lookie loos to deal with) of your own place means that your day can unfold at its own pace, rather than be on someone else’s schedule (other venues might be booked for another event immediately before, or after yours).
elsewhere is quite often much cheaper.
Anguilla’s beaches will be larger on one side of the island and smaller on the other. That lovely beach you scouted a few months earlier for the perfect wedding might be a lot smaller, or gone entirely by the time you’re ready. Consider having a backup location, or a flexible plan.
essentially create an on-the-spot kitchen for your caterer to operate. Still, it’s a very compelling venue, and the photographs you take tend to be postcard-worthy.
HOUSE OF WORSHIP
BEACH
For most, the traditional option. Anguilla has more than enough houses of worship, of different denominations, to accommodate most requirements. This will likely be the most cost-effective option, as all you’d be required to pay are fees for the official, and maybe a small donation to the church. Options for other faiths are more challenging, but it is not uncommon for visitors to the island to invite their own religious leaders to oversee the proceedings.
Anguilla has a lot, they’re stunning, and they’re free! When executed perfectly, the results are spectacular. It’s cliche, but a wedding on an island, on the beach, really would make you the envy of everyone. Of all the options, these can require the most planning and coordination depending on what’s being done. You might think having your entire day at the beach would be the cheapest option, but consider that you’ll need have multiple tents (it only takes 5 minutes of rain to completely ruin your day), areas for a band or DJ, a dance floor, electricity for lighting, etc. You’ll also have to
Possibly the most flexible of all the options. They’ll typically have different locations to choose from - beachfront (in most cases) or garden - and typically either have infrastructure already in place, such a reception hall, or a restaurant, and staff, to handle catering, or they have relationships with other vendors who can supply whatever you need. A bonus is that rooms for your travelling guests can be booked at great rates and you’ll benefit from having everyone close by. AXA

ne of the oldest wedding tropes is “The wedding lasts a day, the marriage (hopefully) lasts a lifetime, but photos are forever.” Tech-savvy millennials are a bit more succinct: “Pics—or it didn’t happen!” We document and share so many mundane moments with the world. But for couples who have taken on the expense, time and effort to plan, travel (often with family and friends in tow) great photos of such a special occasion are simply non-negotiable.

other’s noses, and danced with friends and family all night long. What’s next? For some brides, the answer is “Trash the dress!” Originally seen in the works of Las Vegas photographer John Michael Cooper, “trashing the dress” involves a contrast between the elegance and glamour of the wedding gown and an environment that will likely ruin the dress. Beaches are the most popular setting; some brides get splattered with paint, while others explore abandoned buildings, take a swim, or even play in mud!

Your photographer will likely want to get to know you—in person, if possible, and via Skype or phone if not—to get a feel for your personalities and your story. Many photos are traditional—bride and groom with parents, cutting the cake, first kiss—but if there’s an image you absolutely must have, speak up (mind-reading isn’t on your photographer’s resume!). You should also choose someone to be in charge of that shot list; the photographer will work with that person to ensure that image is captured before the wedding and reception are over.

REAL GUEST REVIEW #14093825 Grand Outlook Castle’s 105th of 105 ALL 5-Star Guest Reviews
“Absolutely perfect” My family and I just returned from a fabulous Anguilla vacation. From the start of the planning process Elise and Paul were very helpful. Even though it was far from our first trip, it is always great to know what is currently happening on the Island. Paul and I had many funny conversations about old Anguilla and today’s Anguilla.
I am always a little skeptical about what I read in reviews, but every 5 star review is absolutely right on as far as Grand Outlook Castle goes. Everything is in perfect working condition and if it was not all we had to do is make a simple phone call. I can’t say enough about the staff either. They are so helpful. We like our privacy and enjoyed the fact that the staff asked us how often WE wanted housekeeping to come in. As I sit here watching the New England snow come down I want to start planning my next trip. “Liz from Rhode Island!”

casual conversation over dinner ten years ago was all it took to pique the Bhallas’ interest in Anguilla, described as “the Nantucket of the Caribbean” by a friend. A few short months later, not only had they taken their first trip to the island, but they had also closed on a property overlooking Black Garden Bay. That empty lot became the site of their stunning Anguilla home, Villa Kishti. “Once we built it and started to live here, the island grew on us,” Suresh smiles. “We like the people, and we like what the island has to offer.” That growing affection led them to start looking at more properties— this time on the beach. “We thought it might be interesting to look at building on the beach, and even possibly living there,” Suresh explains. So, just around the time their home was being completed, they purchased some land on Meads Bay. continued on page 68 ISSUE FOURTEEN | DESIGN ANGUILLA MAGAZINE

continued from page 67 Zoning restrictions for their one-acre beachfront property required them to create a minimum of 12 bedrooms. Initially, the couple considered creating a small community of two-bedroom cottages, but there simply wasn’t enough room to fit them comfortably or cost-effectively. “When we analyzed the cost of putting in the common areas that would have been needed, it made us go back to the drawing board,” Suresh points out. “We lost 12 to 18 months changing the concept, but it was worth it. We had a great team, which made it easier.” In the end, the combined design teams at Toronto-based Taylor Smyth Architects and Cecconi Simone Inc. created two 6-bedroom villas, each on one half of the lot, staggered for privacy, but maintaining an indoor-meets-outdoor approach to living on the beach, 68

The garden view rooms feature intimate garden spaces for private lounging and reading. “Twelve people staying in one of the villas wouldn’t feel crowded,” Suresh laughs. NICE NEIGHBOURS Bookended by two world-class resorts—Viceroy Anguilla to the west, and Malliouhana on a bluff at the far eastern end— Meads Bay is a mile-long beach lover’s paradise. In fact, it was Malliouhana that kick-started development on Meads Bay over 30 years ago when in opened in 1984. The island’s first luxury resort, it illustrated the kinds of development that were possible on Anguilla and has gone on to define the spirit of Meads Bay. continued on page 74

WHERE EXPLORER continued from page 72 John Vasatka, General Manager of Malliouhana, who are also in the property market with their own villas, recalls those early days before Meads Bay became internationally known for its beauty and possibilities. “Mr. Roydon [creator of Malliouhana] had a vision for the area back in the late 70s. We look forward to continuing as a significant presence on Mead Bay and hope to anchor it for centuries to come.” Next to follow in 1985 was Carimar, which demonstrated yet another way to enjoy the beach. The cosy, affordable one- and two-bedroom condos are consistently among the most popular spots to stay along the beach. Together with Malliouhana, they have epitomized the range of possibilities on the beach: high-end luxury as well as affordable beach chic.
THE NEW GENERATION Viceroy Anguilla’s opening in 2009 heralded a new dawn for Meads Bay development, characterized by a clean, modern look. The Beach House, and now Kishti on Meads, have followed their lead with a very modern take on luxury accommodations. The shift has not come without stylistic critics, but Ian Edwards (of development firm Sunset Homes) sees this as a simple response to the market. “Overwhelmingly, it’s what’s being requested these days,” he explains. “Our catalog of projects spans a range of styles, but more and more, the clients that call us want a modern aesthetic.” Sunset Homes’ latest project, just west of the recently completed, and very modern, villas at Kishti on Meads, will continue the clean look. Ian and his wife Janine’s proposed development, Tranquility Beach, will consist of a townhome community on six acres of the beachfront, along with a smaller condo development slated to begin in April 2016.
GROWING DEMAND
FROM TOP Malliouhana can be credited with kickstarting to current development along Meads Bay; Carimar Beach Club has been an ever-present almost as long as Malliouhana with a similar design style; Kishti on Meads, the latest property to open on Meads Bay chose a more modern expression of luxury beachfront living; Three yearold Ocean Echo is the newest of a string of high quality eateries along the beach which have made it a popular destination among visitros and residents alike.

Most properties along the beach enjoy high occupancy rates throughout the year, and that drives even more development. Scott Kircher, general manager at 19-room Frangipani Beach Resort, is looking forward to opening their new beachfront villa later this year. “It made sense because we love Meads Bay, and we have a demand issue where we need more room,” he explains. “When we acquired the villa, we knew it would be a great value add to our current property, giving us the space that we needed for special events. It just made sense, and it’s a really cool property.” Meads Bay shows no signs of slowing down or attracting less attention. “People love that they can walk from restaurant to restaurant along that beach,” concludes Janine Edwards. “Meads Bay is definitely now a destination.” AXA

MEADS BAY MAGIC FEW LOCATIONS IN Anguilla convey the relaxation and quality that come to mind when one thinks of Meads Bay. A mile of powderwhite sand, high quality properties and world-class restaurants makes it a beach-lover’s dream. Sunset Homes, owned by Ian “Sugar George” and Janine Edwards, partners on this development with Aries Capital, as they seek to add to the offerings of Meads Bay with the proposed first phase of Tranquility Beach Anguilla, a six-acre community-style development with villas. Sunset Homes plans to launch the development by creating a smaller property of one- and two-bedroom units just East, and along the same beach. Known as Signature Suites at Tranquility Beach, these luxury suites are a precursor to the main development. The 18 one-bedroom units are spread over three 3-storey buildings. Quite spacious [most are over 1,000 sq. ft.], they are characterized by clean, modern design and luxury finishes. Upper floor units are flexible, with the two units on each level able to be combined to create up to a maximum of 6 two-bedtion, the property features two swimming pools, hot tubs in all suites, patio Jacuzzis in select suites, and a fitness center. With construction set to begin in the summer of 2016, Sunset Homes aims to have Signature Suites ready for rental for the Winter 2017/18 season. “The demand for Meads Bay vacation experiences is extremely high,” says Janine, discussing their reasons for choosing the location for Tranquility Beach and Signature Suites. And, as Ian adds, “Meads Bay itself is a brand. People love it.” TOP AND BELOW The development has a very clean, modern aesthetic, both outside, and inside with minimal furnishings and a neutral colour palette.

MISCELLANY LAST WORDS
THIS PAGE Scenes from a re-enactment of a yesteryear wedding at the annual Welches Fest in 2014.
Nuptial Nostalgia
n those days, the lovers prepared for the wedding by meeting the priest or minister to publish their “banns”, or public announcements, on three consecutive Sundays at the principal service. If the proclamations were called without objection, the wedding day would be arranged. In a small community, it was a village affair. Everybody got involved and would contribute to the feast—someone would bring the liquor, another would give a goat or turkey, and so on. It was a day of joy for the entire village. No one would go out to work that day. There were very few cars in Anguilla in those days, so you walked to the church. People would mill around the churchyard waiting until the parties came; no one would enter the church before the bridegroom. When he arrived, the church bell would ring to let everyone in the village know. At this point, all the guests would enter and take their seats, waiting on the bride. Much as couples do today, the bride and the bridegroom would stand before the minister to say their vows. After the ceremony, the newlyweds would lead a procession, on foot—some people even played instruments—to the place where they would have the feast. We had no halls, so the most suitable home in the village would be dressed up with flowers and used.

Rum, often smuggled from St. Martin, was the thing to get the boys moving. They would go all night, perhaps, dancing and having a good time. Sometimes the fun would last for a couple of days, if there was enough money for refreshments. A few days after the wedding, the cake would be cut into slices and sent to various persons in the community as a compliment of the newlyweds. People really looked forward to receiving theirs. The first Sunday after the wedding, the newlyweds went to church for what was called the “turning out”: everyone wished them luck, good health and so on. We would then start to look forward to them having their first baby. That would be another joyous occasion, with another big feast. Back then, weddings were among the main sources of jollity in the village. Life in Anguilla was hard, with not many opportunities for enjoyment, so a wedding was an escape from the hustle and bustle of life—if even just for a little while. AXA
