xtraordinary Anguilla. Three months after being battered by record-breaking, Category 5 Hurricane Irma, our tiny island nation was back to business as

usual. Guests arriving in 2018 may spot only the tiniest glimpses of the devastation Irma wrought. In time it will make an interesting anecdote, a memory to discuss with your Anguillian friends who “lived through it.”Right now it’s a living lesson in Anguillian strength, determination and resilience. If ever an island knows how to stand up to a Category 5 Hurricane it’s this one. If ever an island had a network of tourists, friends and family from far and wide who cared enough to send aid and support in the most timely and helpful way it’s Anguilla. And if ever a people pulled together to bring their

beloved home back to life swiftly and safely it’s Anguillians. This special edition of True Anguilla will not dwell on the devastation; rather we’ll show Anguilla and her fabulous accommodations, beautiful beaches, unique attractions and outstanding cuisine as they are post Irma– simply amazing. Such an incredible event can’t go unmarked though, so our editorial features some of the heroes and heroines of the storm and recounts how, for some, the strength Anguilla showed in adversity became the reason why they decided to visit, buy a home or invest here. We are so glad you came to visit, we hope to see you often, and that you truly enjoy Anguilla. TRUDY & ORRETT

BY SEA As of publication date the ferry service was transitioning, we suggest you check with the ATB or your accommodation property for latest information. In regular service the ferries run all day between 7.30am and 6.15pm (departing Anguilla). The first ferry to Anguilla from St. Martin departs at 8.15am and the last at 7.00pm. Ferries run approximately every 30 to 40 minutes, and the trip takes about 25 minutes and costs $20 plus taxes each way. Airport transfers from Princess Juliana International Airport via a scheduled or charter boat service is easy, and there are lots of good providers to choose from. Simply call or go online and book your transfer with a company like Calypso Charters. Once you clear St. Maarten immigration and collect your bags you will be met in the arrival hall of the airport by a representative who will transfer you and your bags to your boat a few minutes away via taxi.

If you are travelling in a large group we suggest you contact a destination management specialist such as Blue Sea Anguilla to coordinate the process.

he beaches bring people to Anguilla, but the friends they make here are what keep them coming back. Anguillians are friendly and welcoming, but above all else, to quote the Anguilla National Anthem, proud, strong and free. These qualities were exemplified by Anguillians’ actions following Irma. Anguilla got knocked down but quickly got back up again. Anguillians remained calm, and despite the loss of essential services island-wide, damaged homes and the ongoing threat of Hurricanes Jose and Maria, there was no rush to evacuate, no curfews, no hoarding or looting, no rise in crime and very little panic. As soon as they could, Anguillians got on with clearing the roads, rescuing possessions,

26

www.trueanguilla.com

repairing their homes, hospital and schools and even hosting visitors. Post Irma greetings were even warmer and more heartfelt. Hugs and smiles were exchanged, thanks and praise were given daily. “I’m here,”“God is good” and “I am blessed” were the most often heard phrases because Anguillians build for hurricanes, prepare for hurricanes and accept them as part of life. The candle and solar powered lifestyle that the lack of “current” and WiFi created, for 100 plus days for some, was managed stoically. Families and friends became closer, sharing homes and precious resources. Generations bonded and children and parents played together with no TV, iPhone or Xbox to binge on. Days were hot, busy and short

ANGLEC STRONG Power teams

because everyone wanted to get as much done as possible before the sun went down. Both terrible and special memories were made, and despite its challenges, for many it was truly a return to the good old days. Afterwards we learnt that overseas friends and family watched on with bated breath as Irma headed straight at us, bombarded by horrific media images, frantic to hear news and to send help. Thankfully telecommunications provider Flow maintained cell phone services (in some areas), Radio Anguilla and the Government of Anguilla’s Department of Disaster Management and members of the Emergency Operations Centre prepared the island for Irma and coordinated official information bulletins, and with the assistance of social media, thousands sent aid and came up with fabulous schemes to help “Extraordinary Anguilla.” Go Fund Me pages for organisations and individuals sprung up within hours of the storm hitting, and since then, over a million dollars has been donated in time, cash or supplies to these pages and to organisations or to individual efforts led by friends of Anguilla. We have mentioned a few here but there were far too many to record everyone. Sorry if we missed you and thank you all for your generosity in helping to rebuild Anguilla.

The sight of “pole men” or guys and girls in bucket trucks working all hours of the day and night, seven days a week, is probably the image most associated with Irma, for every resident of Anguilla. They have rightly been lauded as true hurricane heroes. Local utility ANGLEC, faced a herculean task when Irma left them with a severely damaged plant and over half of the island’s electricity poles destroyed. “Committed to serve” they promised and delivered ‘lights by Christmas’ with full electrification occurring 115 days after Irma thanks to their hard work and the incredible effort put in by colleagues from other Caribbean Utilities, Canada and support from CARILEC, HM Governor's Office in Anguilla, the UK Government and the Government of Anguilla.

ROY PEACOCK Roy runs Anguilla Tropical Weather Facebook Group from the UK! He provided excellent information up to and during Irma, Jose and Maria. “I moved to Anguilla in 1994 and fell in love with the island and the people. When Hurricane Luis hit a year later, it was the worst storm Anguilla had suffered in recorded history, yet The Weather Channel only gave it superficial coverage. Back then, we didn’t have the internet either, so independent research was nearly impossible. The way people pulled together really impressed me. “Anguilla root up but no way dat storm goanna win.” When Lenny came the wrong way and hit in 1999 and dumped feet of water so people had to climb out of windows onto roofs during the middle of the hurricane, the same thing happened and the backhoes came out to make new roads so people could get out of their stranded communities. I may not be Anguillian by birth, but Anguilla is in my heart so I give a little of my time trying to share my experiences with Hurricanes to help those that may not have gone through the eye of the storm.”

Blanchard's Hurricane Relief

Anguillians Overseas, Terese, Bernice, Olivia, Aline started their own Gofundme. Dee Ann is working with the Health Authority and the DoE to distribute funds.

Although short term needs have been met and damaged homes are being repaired, Anguillians still face a tough future as our tourism season, the mainstay of our economy, has been reduced significantly. Ongoing aid providers continue to work with the vulnerable and needy. The Blanchards Hurricane Relief Fund has raised over $1 million to date; ably distributed by the Blanchards team, the fund has provided generators for nursing homes, schools and homes, food, formula, diapers and clothing for babies and food and water for over 2,000 Anguilla residents, school supplies for teachers, schools, students and special needs programs, as well as tools and building materials for re-construction.

Anguilla Red Cross

Bloom’s Anguilla Relief Fund has been successful in identifying the vulnerable and providing them with immediate financial aid and critical supplies, providing small cash donations and locally sourced food and hardware purchases for rebuilding so that dollars donated circulate within Anguilla. Headed up by the energetic and indefatigable Bonnie Bloom, this fund has raised over $107,000 to date. Aid is distributed via a team of volunteer Community Ambassadors which include (and in no particular order!): Gershwin Lake, Sanya Ostergaard, Haydn Hughes, Gilda Gumbs Samuel, Jackie Pascher, Charlie Hodge, Corwin Carty, Davon Carty, Kyle Hodge, Julia Carty, Rickielle Hodge, J’saon Brooks, Jaqueline Cistero, Molly Nuttin, Danny Laud and Josveek Huligar as well as local musicians; Springer, Bookie, Nathalie (Natty), Deanna and Jayden to name a few! Bonnie has now shifted focus to repairs like putting a concrete roof on a building in West End – and she has indentified 7 additional homes for repairs. Help Anguilla website and its associated Amazon Wish List of emergency relief supplies was set up when

“Anguilla is the land. Its people are the nation. They become the culture. The way we mould and shape the land is obvious. The way the land impacts us is less so. But, my God, what a powerful force it is! Invisible and undeniable. This is what makes us Anguillian, not a piece of paper. Not the location of a navel string. These only bring "rights." Neither rights nor documents keep one attached to this land. It is the invisible, undeniable physical that affects our psychological processes. In there Anguillians are created. Not birthed. And we smile and push through the worse of it. We survived for centuries on a 35sq mile rock that allows us shrub but not fruit. Fish-filled sea – but no rivers or lakes for drinking water. A solid foundation for our "bunkers," but yet enough depth for our cisterns. No rich soils to toil, but winds to sail to trade. And we smile and thrive. Even if only, because not every Anguillian lives here, or is from here. Because this land will teach you the value of love, pride, humility, togetherness, patience, acceptance and resilience. And so I smile, I care and I share. #findingin spiration#findingwisdom @ anguillafoundation

SIMONA VOGEL Simona Vogel runs a Facebook group called Anguilla for Tourists that became a very important source of information during the weeks surrounding Irma. Simona worked tirelessly to disseminate information quickly to a highly concerned audience. "Our first trip to Anguilla was 13 years ago and it was love at first sight. We have returned every year after, and fell in love again and again. I feel that one needs to experience Anguilla to really understand why we keep returning as often as we can. The idea for the group came as I was looking for news about Anguilla, while being home and wishing to be there. I knew I was not alone in doing this. I started the group aiming to provide exposure to Anguilla for tourists like me, and also for those looking to visit for the first time. I am very happy to hear that the group has been helpful during Irma and in the months since. Many thanks to all who helped me keep the group going and let's hope that better days are yet to come."

Marc Forgione BBQ in New York

Matt & Charity Hyde, Francie Tanner, Judd Burdon of Anguilla Watersports and Kenroy Herbert of Levitcus Lifestyle teamed up. The list quickly sold out and after a number of logistical challenges and with the assistance of Amerijet and others, supplies were delivered to The Anguilla Drug Store in the Valley, which Olive and Diane Hodge offered up as a distribution centre. The Anguilla Beaches' Help Anguilla Rebuild Now fundraiser contributed $75,000 to the Anguilla Red Cross. In the weeks following Irma, the Red Cross addressed immediate needs, distributing emergency supplies, and later implemented the "unlimited cash program" for Anguilla's most vulnerable. The band British Dependency, Davon Carty and Calypso Charters are the forces behind The Anguilla Foundation, which benefited from a generous fundraising event – an Anguillian BBQ in NYC –hosted by top NYC chef, Marc Forgione, and facilitated by Erica Piagio and Sammi Green. The foundation has also set aside money for future emergencies and any new donations will be directed to community projects like scholarships, small business grants and development of the Arts on Anguilla. Rosmund Davis says, “Calypso has always been a supporter of our local artistic community and its artistic, social and entrepreneurial needs. Going through Irma, it was obvious that we were experiencing an event that was bigger than all of us. That required us to think beyond normal business and be a conduit for connecting those who were concerned and eager to help. My hope is by setting up the Foundation, we’ll be able to help many more people in the future as well.”

Tender Loving Care Home for the Elderly

Anguilla Stronger is a tax deductible collaborative hurricane relief fund created by Starwood Capital Group and joined by founder members Belmond Cap Juluca, Auberge Resorts (management company of Malliouhana), Malliouhana Ownership, and Zemi Beach House Resort & Spa who are collectively responsible for over 1000 staff. The initiative was launched on October 4, 2017 and has raised more than $1.7 million to date. Jacquie Ruan and members of the Rotary Club of Anguilla as well as the Anguilla Progressive Society of New York (APANY) have been instrumental in raising funds and offering support on and off island. Barrels and barrels of supplies, cash donations to provide Christmas dinners for the elderly and families in need, a $100,000 dollar donation to repair the Ebenezer Methodist church are just a few of donations that have been made through APANY and their Florida arm. Local songwriter and singer Omari Banks is donating all proceeds from his latest single, #CaribbeanStrong, to the APANY hurricane relief efforts for Anguilla and the song is available for purchase across multiple platforms: Tender Loving Care Home for the Elderly will be rebuilt thanks to Sunset Homes, Bixby Bridge Capital, DLG Engineering, Cuisinart Golf Resort and Spa and The Reef, BeachCourt Villa Friends and Family, Rayme Lake/Anguilla Masonry Products, Bloom Anguilla Relief Fund, APLO New York, @helpanguilla,@yachtaidglobal, Leroy Gumbs/Leeward Construction, Pelican Investments, Rhona Richardson-Roydon, Greig's Trucking, Lakes Do It Best, Maryann Mulhall, ABC Supplies, Thomas Kelly, Glennis Connor, Kanwar Singh and Calypso Charters among others.

COMMUNITY CLEAN-UPS! Anguillians took a “jollification” approach when Grieg’s Trucking, Superior Industries, Vanterpool Services and Bryan’s Heavy Equipment donated equipment and Tropical Distributors, Best Buy Supermarket, Les Grands Vins de France & Leviticus Lifestyle provided water and members of the South Hill, West End, The Valley, Stoney Ground, Tacking Estate, Island Harbour and Blowing Point communities provided the manpower to clean up their communities post Irma.

6 BEACHES AFTER IRMA

S S

o how did Hurricane Irma affect Anguilla’s most valuable treasure – our 35 incredible beaches? We asked resident beach hunter, Andy Connor, to explore some of the most well known post-Irma.

RENDEZVOUS BAY I went over to Rendezvous Bay, the largest of them all, after hearing it had been damaged by Irma. This beach carries the weight of places like CuisinArt and Bankie Banx’s Dune Preserve. Walking the beach, I stumble upon Bankie, doing his thing, and have a chat with this legend. His words to me were,“As you can see Andy, I got hit, but I’ve rebuilt this damn place now about four times before, and I’ll do it again. It ain’t easy, but it’s alright as long as God is on your side.” And it’s alright; Rendezvous is now back... go check it out for yourself. Bankie may not have finished his rebuild quite yet, but Garvey at the Sunshine Shack has!

SHOAL BAY EAST Shoal Bay is, and always will be, Anguilla’s most talked about beach since it was ranked as the World’s Best Beach.I had to go over there and see what was left of it after Irma. With the power of this storm, I had no intentions of seeing what I saw. Shoal Bay did not lose a thing! In fact, it gained in size and made the map of Anguilla even bigger. A couple of years ago, Gwen’s Reggae Grill had to be relocated from the eastern part to the western side of Shoal Bay because the ocean was taking the property of her business. Now after the most powerful storm to hit the western hemisphere, Irma replaced in 5 hours what was taken away in the past 5 years. Thank you Irma... Gwen can now go back to her old location if she likes to.

ROAD BAY (SANDY GROUND) Road Bay (Sandy Ground) is the typical hangout location where it all happens after the sun sets. The mother of all storms came at sunrise on September 6th with every intention of closing the show down in Sandy Ground, and that morning I thought it had...Irma took out part of Elvis’ Beach Bar, most of Roy’s Bayside Grill and all of the Pump House. But literally within days Roy’s and Johnno’s and Dad’s reopened (with others following close behind) and I remember what the Anguillian people have learnt from the past: “one good thing about being down is the only way to go is up.” We have the antidote for Irma and it’s called REBUILD.

MAUNDAYS BAY Often damaged by past storms, Irma was no exception for Maundays Bay; the place where the beach and Cap Juluca Resort go hand in hand. As the storm of the century packed winds of around 200 mph, this beach was destroyed. Hurricane Irma washed away the sand leaving only big boulders and hard rock. Hurricane Maria came a week later, as a tropical storm in Anguilla, and was gentler. Maria gave this beach (along with Forest Bay and Shoal Bay West) a face-lift and redeemed what was taken away by Irma. The finest and whitest soft sands anywhere on planet earth are back, and once again you’re able to take your shoes off and walk into the sunset.

ISLAND HARBOUR We live in the Blowing Point Village, but our beloved home village is Island Harbour. Someday after Ronya and I win the lottery, we’d love to own a home there. This beach is not the best beach for swimming, but it’s the only place you can swim from the mainland to another island (Scilly Cay). It’s right here on Island Harbour’s beach that you can feel the entire island’s DNA in your system. Irma felt the same way, and made her presence knownwhen she damaged or destroyed some of the local hang-outs on the beach like Falcon’s Nest and Pelicans Beach Bar.But now they have rebuilt and there is still no better setting than on this beach for an ice cold drink. What Irma demolished is only making space for a better Pelican to fly.

MEADS BAY Meads Bay means so much to me. My wife, Ronya, and I got married here in 2012 and I wondered what was left of this extraordinary beach we called our own. The one place most happily married couples would love to see stay intact is where they tied the knot. The western part of the island was hit hardest by Irma, however this gem of a beach was left untouched. In fact, Meads Bay came out with a surplus of sea and sand while my memories of 2012 were kept alive. You don’t have to be married on this beach to fall in love with it.

THERE ARE VILLAS and there are Ani Villas. Anguilla is proud to be the home of the first of this small, ultra-luxury ‘private resorts in one of a kind locations’ collection, now with amazing properties in the Dominican Republic, Sri Lanka and Thailand. The Ani Villa experience includes the services of the amazing Chef Kelston “Sweets” Connor and an extremely professional and friendly full service team.

In response to an unwelcome visit by Irma, the spectacular glass-fronted, clifftop property has invested extensively in repair and refurbishment, and reopens after a major spring clean with a host of new and improved amenities, including extra-large Jacuzzis to take advantage of the mind blowing views of Little Bay and the coast, brand new catering style kitchens, new bathroom finishes and an in-house Trained Ayurvedic Massage Therapist.

BIRD OF PARADISE overlooking Sandy Hill Bay, is one of Anguilla’s most enduringly popular luxury properties, boasting spectacular views, beach access and an exceptional blend of indoor/outdoor living. Read the story of how Bird of Paradise was purchased just days after Irma on page 120.

BOUTIQUE HOTELS

nguilla’s small, friendly, independent boutique hotels were real “Hurricane Heroes,” offering places to stay to the influx of post-Irma visitors.

LOCATED ON THE still spectacular sands of Shoal Bay East, Shoal Bay Villas, Kathy Haskins’ luxurious, oceanfront “homes away from home” are as beautiful and comfortable as they were “Before Irma,” and their precious strip of gleaming white sand and sparkling turquoise water is as breathtaking as ever –maybe even more beautiful. Irma kindly returned previously eroded sand “beyond the point” (also known as Upper Shoal Bay) giving guests more beach to walk, explore, snorkel and swim than ever. Turtles have returned to lay and hatch their eggs, seabirds still glide and

52

www.trueanguilla.com

dive for our viewing pleasure and Shoal Bay’s resident reefs are unaffected and still team with fish. As one December 2017 guest said, “Staying at Shoal Bay Villas, enjoying all that Shoal Bay has to offer, it’s impossible to image Hurricane Irma hit the island 3 months ago.” Kathy, daughter Rachel and team looked after a number of relief and aid workers who came to the island post-Irma to assist with the recovery effort, and said many of them fell in love with the island and decided to come back and stay as “proper” guests this season.

S TAY I N / boutique hotels

CARIMAR BEACH CLUB on Meads Bay looked after guests (who had chosen not to evacuate!) during Irma, and within hours of the storm passing GM Rolf Masshardt was preparing rooms to welcome guests who ranged from aid workers on-island to assist with the hospital and schools, representatives from UNICEF and the CTO to insurance adjusters and (at one point up to 74) Royal Engineers from the British Army! For this writer, watching the Royal Engineers cooling down in Meads Bay after a long, hot day helping to restore Anguilla will stay a precious memory for some time!

The staff and owners of this exemplar Anguilla property showed extraordinary spirit and sent positive news to concerned friends via social media. The resort’s own travel agent (Travel Bureau Inc/George Reigal) worked tirelessly to rearrange upcoming guests’ air travel and published up-to-theminute information about rapidly changing flights, helping not only their own guests, but hundreds of other people make plans to travel to Anguilla. With damage mainly centered on the landscaping, which quickly bounced back, the property is now back to its beautiful best.

PARADISE COVE OPENED straight after the storm, and although damaged, is swiftly making repairs and has played host to a number of guests, most notably 40-plus Canadian linesmen brought in to assist with restoring all the fallen power lines.

LUXURY HOTELS

LUXURY UPDATES Four Seasons Resort & Residences, the Reef and Zemi Beach House Hotel & Spa opened in early 2018 and CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa and the Belmond Cap Juluca are scheduled to finish their planned refurbishments and reopen in November.

FOUR SEASONS RESORT & Residences took exactly the right time to restore their luxury property to the impeccable standards global Four Seasons guests expect. Indulge in refurbished restaurants, refreshed rooms, restored landscaping and of course the legendary service the brand is famous for.

ZEMI BEACH HOUSE Hotel & Spa nestles in the western corner of Shoal Bay. The property and luxurious gardens weathered the storm well and have never looked more beautiful. The stunning and authentic Thai House Spa, centerpiece of the property, was damaged by Irma but has been lovingly resorted and is as breathtaking as ever.

THE VIEWS ARE the star at The Reef by CuisinArt, curved around beautiful Merrywing Bay’s porcelain and cobalt sea, almost every window frames a sublime scene. That natural beauty inspires the interior palette – sea-foam white and splashes of gentle colour – that call to mind coral beds. Contemporary styling completes the picture, from the dazzling lobby and stunning pool area, to the smart technology dotted throughout the luxury property.

CAT LIKE Summer guests at Frangipani can really take advantage of the beautiful calm waters and indulge in the complimentary water sports which include waterskiing, wakeboarding, and tubing, with access to kayaks, Hobie Cats and standup paddleboards. They also run twice weekly beach-hopping trips on their own very comfortable boat, the FrangiCat, with Captain Rasharn at a minimal charge.

FRANGIPANI BEACH RESORT, with it’s incredible location right on the sand, was badly hit by Irma, but the owners of this wonderful family-run boutique hotel moved heaven and earth to remove sand and replace roof tiles, windows and an awful lot of furniture to open in time to welcome guests for Christmas.

eil and Wendy Freeman, Principals of Aries Capital and owners of Villa Alegria and Tranquility Beach Resort, visited Anguilla to assess the damage from Hurricane Irma just three weeks after, and were amazed at the spirit and resolve of the Anguillian people. In Neil’s words: “This trip reminded me of old Anguilla, 20 years ago BC (Before CuisinArt). At that time, there were just Cap Juluca and Malliouhana, which had limited restaurants, a few good local restaurants and beach bars and a few upscale restaurants. Occasionally the electricity would go down for a few hours. No golf course, No

Sushi and few US brands in the grocery store. Still, we loved it, as the locals and expats would go to Johnno’s on Friday night to hear the Mussingtons, dance together, drink beer or rum and have a good time. I enjoyed scuba diving most days and Wendy would ride her bicycle around the entire island. The beginning of the 2017/2018 season will be like Anguilla BC! Wendy and I fell in love with Anguilla because of the crystal‐clear ocean and gentle breezes, the surprisingly good restaurants, and most importantly, the friendly, helpful people… We will enjoy the nostalgic feel of this quieter tourist season in Anguilla.”

tephane Zaharia and family have a found a home in Anguilla, and this General Manager’s love and enthusiasm for CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa, the property he has managed for 14 years (which is currently undergoing an extensive planned renovation), and it’s younger sister resort The Reef, is infectious. “It’s going to be amazing, nicer – better!” The new improved hotel will be a fitting tribute to Leandro P Rizzuto, the owner of both hotels and the Conair Corporation, who sadly passed away in 2017. Mr. Rizzuto, fell in love with Anguilla after taking a day trip from St Martin in 1992. He opened CuisinArt in 1999, and was a regular visitor to the island and knew many of the resort’s employees by name. He had a great affection and regard for Anguilla and the resort, and his family is continuing his legacy under the assured leadership of Stephane. The refurbishment of this beloved hotel is bound to be spectacular. The renovations will stick with the existing

Greek theme, but bring a fresh, modern approach with lots of natural finishes. The new plans include a Ballroom which will hold up to up to 300 people and will be 5,000 sq.ft and will be a huge asset to Anguilla’s corporate and incentive offering; a reimagined Café Med and an exciting new lobby area. CuisinArt’s signature hydroponic farm was wiped out by Irma, but was quickly rebuilt, so visitors craving the resort’s signature welcome treat, a bowl of hydroponic cherry tomatoes, will not be disappointed. Stephane, his wife Valerie, and children Morgane and Matteo love life in Anguilla. Originally from Paris, they moved to the island they now call home in 2005 via stints in Aruba, Antigua, London, Florida and New York. Valerie, a talented graphic designer who has volunteered her services to lots of on-island charities, “love(s) the lifestyle and that there is good weather all the time…it’s easy, safe, great for kids, but there is also sophistication.”

Although the Caribbean has reigned supreme as a top global incentive destination for many years it is a relatively new market for Anguilla and our foray into the world of elite Presidents Clubs and Chairman’s Circle programs only started to gather steam within the past decade. We are proud to say that Anguilla has now become one of the hottest destinations for groups looking for the quintessential luxury incentive travel experience. A serendipitous moment in Anguilla’s history dates back to 1980 when the government of the day decided to limit development to discreet, small hotels and elegant upscale resorts. Almost 40 years later, Anguilla continues to endorse this vision and is arguably home to the region’s highest concentration of luxury properties. WHERE TO DINE? SO MANY CHOICES! IT’S IN OUR NATURE. Hospitality comes naturally to Anguillians. Friendly smiles and warm greetings are part of everyday life here. It is that spirit of caring and sharing that shapes interactions between visitors and locals and what exudes a sense of safety and security on our shores. DO A LOT... OR A LITTLE. YOU CHOOSE. It is said that on Anguilla, it is good to do

Indeed, Anguilla gives you permission to relax and disconnect from the fast paced world, but if you are more the adventurous type, Anguilla has a wide range of activities and excursions available to keep you moving all day long. Everything from horseback riding on the beach to deep sea fishing; learning to cook gourmet meals to trying your hand at kite surfing. Or, how about a round of golf on a Greg Norman designed championship golf course? Tired yet? Hope not because there’s still ATV tours, Tiger Boat snorkel rides, trips to our offshore cays, hiking the interior, exploring caves, scuba diving, hydro-flight, paddle boarding and the list goes on.

CENTRAL

UPDATE Restaurants that were damaged by Hurricane Irma have been (on the whole) reopened – refurbished and improved. Only a handful of restaurants closed, new restaurants have opened and the local “street food” scene is thriving.

LOCAL FOOD "The Strip,” in the Valley, provides an affordable, al fresco way to sample different Caribbean cooking styles (Anguillian, Dominican, Dominicano, Kittian and Jamaican, to name a few) from lunchtime til the early hours. Must try's are Ken's BBQ or Sharpy’s, where you may well run into Simone Connor of Beautiful Sandy Island fame.

70

www.trueanguilla.com

PROBABLY THE MOST taxing decision you will have to take during your time in Anguilla is which restaurants you should try. Crocus Bay is home to da’Vida, and as you descend Anguilla’s steepest hill and see the gleaming bay open up beneath you – you know this is truly a place to “Celebrate Life.” Da’Vida is the brain-child of the Lloyd Family, Anguillian tourism trailblazers, who have created an oasis of style and tranquility in a beloved bay where locals exercise as the sun sets and mega yachts anchor during the season Da’Vida offers two very different experiences: by day – casual, sand-between-your toes Bayside offers up a relaxed international menu, beach service and complimentary loungers. Stay for the day because the shallow, calm bay is a perfect place for children to play and swim, excellent for paddleboarding and kayaking (which are available for hire) as well as being the starting point for a snorkeling trip to Little Bay. At night the Tamarind Lounge offers a sophisticated setting for cocktails and tapas and da’Vida Restaurant serves up a delicious Asian/Caribbean fusion menu courtesy of Anguilla Executive Chef Carlos and his East Indian Sous Chefs.

GOOD TO KNOW

Da’Vida Restaurant offers complimentary shuttle service from hotels & villas for dinner guests only as long as you book 12 hours in advance.

BY DAY: DA'VIDA BAYSIDE Swim, Relax and Rejuvenate on beautiful Crocus Bay International menu featuring burgers, pizza’s, salads and specials. Complimentary loungers, beach service, watersports, docking. Live Music every Sunday.

BY NIGHT: DA'VIDA Fine Asian Caribbean Dining Tapas & Cocktails at the Tamarind Lounge Stunning Oceanfront location

Complimentary Shuttle (dinner only) We welcome large parties and corporate groups.

SANDY GROUND STRONG!

SANDBAR, ANOTHER FAMILY run enterprise, is without doubt one of THE best places to watch the sunset in Anguilla. It is a very popular so be sure to book if you want a front row seat! Darren and Alicia introduce delicious new tapas every season to complement their old favourites. Must try items include their frozen Rum Punch or the world famous Sandbar Fries, crispy, spicy, devilishly delicious - you will be hooked for sure.

herever you stay on the island, you must visit Sandy Ground at least once. It’s one of the coolest Caribbean villages you will ever come across. Have a sundowner at one spot, walk the beach for dinner at another, then onto another for music until the early hours.

ROY’S BAYSIDE GRILL was the first beach-front restaurant to welcome guests post Irma. Less than a week after the storm removed the roof of their dining area, this family run “beachside pub” fired up the generator and began serving a short but delicious menu and cold beers to a shell-shocked and grateful local community. After over 35 years at the grill, Roy Bossons has handed over the day to day running to his wife Mandy and their daughter and son-in-law, Claire and Patrick,a young couple with great ideas. They have added their own unique touch –whilst maintaining classic dishes like fish and chips, prime steaks and fresh fish and shellfish cooked to perfection on their grill. A welcoming place, open all day, serving great drinks, Roy’s is still the home of Anguilla’s most famous happy hour.

IRMA UPGRADE

Roy’s held a number of fundraising evenings – musical soirees to help local artists replace instruments and equipment lost in the storm – this has now turned into regular music nights.

MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT Dad’s, Elvis, Johnno’s, Roy’s and SandBar all offer a range of daytime and evening entertainment including live music, quiz nights, karaoke and DJ’s – contact individual venues for their current schedules.

BY DAY AND into the early evening Dad’s is a relaxed beach bar and seafood grill serving lobster, crayfish and lionfish direct from the fisherman at the end of the bay – you can’t get much more local than that! After the sun goes down it’s a nightclub offering live music and DJ sets most nights of the week. Owners Alex and Delbert both love Reggae (Delbert is a singer and a member of The Mussingtons, who often perform) check with them for the current schedule.

BEAUTIFUL VEYA RESTAURANT continues to be a hot ticket for fine dining and live music in the evenings. New and exciting for this year, inspired by Jerry and Carrie’s culinary travels to the East and in response to a cooking challenge Carrie was set by some vegan friends post-Irma, is lunch@veya. The unique menu offers healthy, flavourful, plant-based, Asian-inspired food and

incredible fresh juices to eat in or take away. The breezy, garden ambiance with Sandy Ground views offers a refreshing change from dining on the beach, and the husband and wife team’s enthusiasm for the new menu and its taste-bud tingling flavours is truly infections. Although the menu is mainly vegan, dishes can be customized if you are craving some meat or fish!

Johnno’s

Johnno’s on the Quay

Prickly Pear Bar and Grill

JOHNNO EDWARDS AND his eponymous beach bar Johnno’s have been through storms before, and just like every other time he’s been hit by a hurricane, this legendary gent just seemed to take it in his stride. Shortly after Irma, Sandy Ground rung with the sound of Boss and the Horsepower band, and residents flocked to dance and give thanks. Johnno’s on the Quay (his restaurant on Prickly Pear) is currently under repair – as is Alan Ruan’s Prickly Pear Bar and Grill, but you can still go visit. The beach is bigger and better, and the guys are still making great barbeque and serving cold drinks. Just give them a heads-up, charter a boat and head on out. SAME CAN BE said for Beautiful Sandy Island which, despite disappearing into the ocean the day after Irma, then staging a comeback before being washed away again by Maria, is back. This magical island has disappeared before, but nature always brings her back, and Simone Connor stresses that this time, with the help of all her friends and supporters, Sandy Island is coming back more beautiful than ever.

EAST

SHOAL BAY EAST boasts a run of casual beach bars including Elodia's, Tropical Sunset and Gwen’s offering “lunch with a lounger”and topped and tailed by two luxury hotels, Zemi Beach and The Manoah. It’s a chance to check out the beautiful décor and ambiance at the luxurious Zemi Beach

House Hotel & Spa when you try one of its restaurants or bars: Stone for sea-to-table, Asian-influenced fare; 20 Knots for toesin-the-sand, casual dining and drinks; Shoal Bay Beach Club for cocktails and occasional entertainment or the gorgeous Rhum Room for small-batch, single-estate rums.

A PERENNIAL FAVOURITE, Madeariman is a “must try,” not only for its delicious Mediterranean-inspired cuisine and daily specials but because it also has one of the best and most friendly service teams on the island. For many, the stellar team, headed up by Jeannette Tuitt ably assisted by “Juicy” Lucy, Kendon, Sherine and Myra who have overcome a number of setbacks, is the best thing about the restaurant. Madeariman was rebuilt in 2017 following a devastating fire, only to experience a visit from Irma a few months later, and the team had to excavate tons of sand to reopen! The stylish, untreated wood and galvanized metal décor are both ironically appropriate post-storm. Madeariman’s friendly ambiance and “something for everyone” menu has always attracted a great mix of locals and tourists. Now serving Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, they have also added an entertainment schedule. Watch out for special events like Karaoke on Friday and Sunday evenings and Saturday’s lively string band at lunch.

ANOTHER JEWEL OF the east is Artisan Pizza Napoletana in Island Harbour. Owner/Chefs Indra and Jürgen who trained in Naples, Italy are proud to say they are the first and only Pizzeria in the Caribbean certified by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (AVPN), Naples, Italy. Although their Pizza, made with the finest imported Italian and local ingredients, is undeniably awesome, Artisan is not just about Pizza. Homemade pasta and daily specials starring locally sourced seasonal ingredients and seafood also feature on the menu, and there is a cute bar where you can grab an Aperol Spritz or other drink if you go for takeaway. For sweet lovers there is homemade Gelato, Nutella Pizza and other seasonal sweets such as Tiramisu Cheesecake etc. In an interesting and historically relevant twist of fate, the restaurant is located in an area known as "Webster Yard", where in the past a communal wood fired tall kitchen that would have been kept lit for use by the residents and their many guests was located. As Jurgen and Indra say, “Anguillians are fascinated with wood-fire cooking and the tradition goes way back, it’s cool to think there are still people sitting around and eating food cooked in our woodfired oven.”

Tasty's

Tasty’s a colourful eatery with a cool bar became one of the first restaurants to open after Irma when Chef Dale, who loves to cook on the grill, spotted an opportunity to sell BBQ and tasty side dishes to Irma survivors in need of tasty food and little company. His huge BBQ smoking away on the side of the road became one of the storm’s most iconic sites. GARVEY LAKE’S RED, white, gold and green coloured Sun Shine Shack on Rendezvous Bay was completely flattened by Irma, but with the love and support of friends and family from all over the world and a lot of backbreaking work, Garvey – one of Anguilla’s greatest ambassadors, unveiled SSS2 a few months later. Enjoy BBQ, loungers, attentive service and live music on Saturdays and Sundays. If you get lucky, you may find Bankie Banx there making an impromptu appearance while his venue gets repaired! Further up the bay, Coconuts at the Anguilla Great House continues to serve food and great rum punch whilst the hotel finishes its repairs.

The restaurant suffered extensive damage, but owners Peter and Anne Parles made a herculean effort and turned tragedy into opportunity. Straw Hat is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks and watching the game! GET WRITING (OR READING) PLAN AHEAD A little bird tells us the 2019 Anguilla Lit Fest line up will feature mutlti award winning novelist Colson Whitehead and bestselling author Dan Brown, so keep an eye on the Anguilla Lit Fest website and make plans to come back next year!

ANGUILLA HOSTS AN exceptional annual Literary Festival (usually the 3rd weekend in May). The Anguilla Lit Fest is a brilliant opportunity to meet bestselling writers (past alumni include Alafair Burke, Dan Brown, Edwidge Dandicat, Paul Keens Douglas and Terry MacMillian,) leading industry professionals and make new Anguillian friends in an intimate and beautiful setting Paradise Cove Resort.

The 2018 Lit Fest will focus on local talent. Seek out books by our “Pride of Anguilla” authors including Stephanie Stokes Oliver, James “Freddie” Hughes, Melinda Goddard and Collette Jones Chin to name a few. Try to catch a performance from one of our local poets like Rita Carty, Vanessa Croft Thompson, Fiona Wilkinson, Alexis Ryan or Alysha Johnson or pick up a copy of “Where I see the Sun” an anthology of Anguillian Poetry.

“A DEAR FRIEND who started reading ‘One Way Ticket: From America to Anguilla’ just before Hurricane Irma confessed in its wake that she stopped for fear our dream had been shattered; she worried we might have lamented our move. In fact, seeing the resilience, love, and determination in response to that storm deepened our faith in the friends and loved ones who have become our chosen family in Anguilla, empowered us in recognizing our own capabilities, and enabled me to reassure our dear friend to read on, that the dream we shared in the book continues to be fulfilled without regret!” Melinda K. M. Goddard, author of “One Way Ticket: From America to Anguilla”: the story of trading hectic corporate life in New Jersey for the tranquility, beauty and people of Anguilla when building a new home with her husband, Terry Brady.

Vanessa Croft Thompson, teacher, poet and cunning linguist explains her motivation behind The Anguilla Lovers Collection “A literature teacher married to an artist can do nothing more than come up with a way to honour Anguilla’s culture in a unique and linguistic way. Combining my love for language with my love for quirky gift items resulted in alchemy of iconic Anguillian sayings or references emblazoned on a variety of ready-to-use items

The premise behind this project was to create a set of objects which embodied the unique aspects of our dialect and customs here in Anguilla while appealing to both visitors and locals. It’s easy to find humorous items such as these with Standard English sayings, but much harder to come across those which display the Anguillian experience. The Anguilla Lover Collection is a bevy of usable items which infuse our identity into your day-to-day habits.” VANESSA AND HER husband Daryl, are also the creative force behind, an exciting line of high fashion, easy to wear costume jewelry Fashion Cuts. Stop by Alloyd’s in the Valley to peruse both collections and order on line (or through any of their active social media outlets) and they will arrange for items to be delivered to your hotel or villa.

usic is everywhere in Anguilla. The amount of talent on this tiny island is definitely not in proportion to its size. You can’t escape live music, and although most sounds are unmistakably Caribbean there is more than enough variety to suit every taste. Crispin Brooks, CEO of 1863 (Film & Music) and a passionate supporter of Anguillian musical acts had this to say: "Anguilla is a very special place for many reasons. One of which is music. We have talented vocalists and musicians in just about every genre. The island really has a free and artistic energy pulsing through it. From live performances, to DJs to studio sessions on a nightly basis, there is always someone creating music on Anguilla at any given time of the day. In many ways we may be considered an anomaly. Here is a tiny island in the Caribbean with a population of less than 12 thousand. Yet, its musicians with very little resources, tour regularly all over the world. Two of our singers have even made it to the biggest stages as far as television is concerned, with Deanna Mussington securing a slot on The Voice UK and now Amalia Watty in the current season of American Idol. There is just something special about the relationship between Anguillians and music!

GET AROUND

ANGUILLA IS AN island you simply must explore. On arrival at Blowing Point you can collect a car at Andy’s Car Rental and you can drive yourself to your accommodation or hire a car from a company like Avis, who will deliver your vehicle to your accommodation property and allow you to drop it at the airport or seaport when you leave - you will have to purchase an Anguilla Driving Licence which they will be happy to provide. Alternatively, if you don’t feel like driving on the left hand side of the road, hire taxi driver Sheraul Gumbs of M&S Exquisite Services to give you an island tour or charter a boat and explore our coast and offshore cay’s with Calypso Charters. Large groups should talk to Blue Sea Anguilla who will be happy to arrange transportation.

GET BIRDING

ANGUILLA’S SALT PONDS provide critical stopover points for many migratory birds as they move between their breeding habitat in the north and their wintering grounds in the south. Further, many species choose to overwinter here, providing great bird watching experiences for both residents and visitors. Hurricane Irma hit Anguilla at a particularly difficult time for birds as they were in the midst of their Fall Migration along the Atlantic Flyway. At the end of Irma’s wrath, much of the island’s mangrove species had been devastated, resulting in significant loss of habitat. In particular, ponds on the southwest side took the brunt of the storm and recovery will be a long term process. However, in other portions of Anguilla, the continued rains have resulted in a resurgence of many plant varieties, encouraging movement of new bird species to those areas. For example, we are now seeing both White-crowned and Scaly-naped Pigeons

96

www.trueanguilla.com

on the eastern side of the island. Once considered rare visitors, both species are seemingly beginning to establish themselves on Anguilla. Perhaps the most exciting turn of events was the arrival of a lone American Flamingo on Road Bay Pond one month after the storm. This species was last seen on Anguilla from June of 2015 to March of 2016, breaking a 14 year period of absence. Coincident with its departure from Anguilla, was the arrival of a lone American Flamingo in Puerto Rico. Although there is no way to prove it, one could speculate that it is the same bird that returned to Anguilla in an effort to avoid Hurricane Maria as it made landfall in Puerto Rico. The arrival of the flamingo along with many other species that survived the storm, give Anguilla’s birdwatchers hope for a particularly strong season. Book a bird watching trip with expert Jackie Cistero of Nature Explorers Anguilla.

GET SNORKELLING OR DIVING

LITTLE BAY MARINE Park is one of Anguilla’s hidden treasures. Accessed only by boat, kayak, rock climbing, or rock jumping, the effort to just get to the isolated bay and beach is definitely rewarded. It is one of the best places to relax and enjoy the sea life. Sea turtles skirt the coral-spotted cliff-line while pelicans dive-bomb in to the clear blue-green waters. An important seagrass bed lines the sandy sea-bottom. The Anguilla National Trust and the Department of Fisheries and Marine Resources will soon be adding another element to this marine park: a marked snorkel

trail that uses constructed lobster houses called casitas as its main feature. The lobster casitas, while providing critical habitat to Anguilla’s commercially-important Caribbean spiny lobster and other endangered reef fishes, will also give curious snorkelers a chance to learn more about Anguilla’s amazing underwater world –underwater plaques will provide a wealth of information about what you’re seeing. The snorkel trail will be officially opened in September 2018. In the meantime, contact the Anguilla National Trust about its nature and heritage tours and hikes.

“A

nguilla has been “home away from home” for our family since 1994. At any age, I’ve always appreciated swimming in the gorgeous waters, dining at great beachfront restaurants and spending time with the friends we’ve made there. At the age of 11, I declared to my parents that when I got married, it would happen in Anguilla – either on Meads Bay or Rendezvous (I was still undecided). Almost two decades later, when I introduced Brian to the island, I was thrilled to see that he had the same appreciation for it all. Needless to say, when we started planning our wedding, Anguilla was the only place I could imagine tying the knot. The wedding itself, at Straw Hat, was perfect. Peter and Anne Parles made the planning incredibly easy from a distance. The Straw Hat family made the event flawless and fun (I can’t thank them enough!) and DJ Sugar got, and kept, the crowd dancing.

It was a true team effort: the barefoot ceremony was led by Lindsay Richardson, Dumpa on the steel pans and Sprocka on guitar. Black Orchid made the setting very elegant. Geraud’s starfish-themed coconut cake was gorgeous (and tasty). Favors and gifts for our guests and wedding party were perfectly done by Sal e Mare and Caribbean Soaps & Sundries. We relive the magic through photos by Derrys Richardson and video by Rickiell Hodge. We were fortunate that many of our 80 guests stayed for a while. We were able to show them some of our favorite places through a weekend of events: a family dinner at Trattoria Tromonto, a welcome dinner at Blanchard’s Beach Shack, after party at The Dune, a Sunday BBQ at Garvey’s Sunshine Shack, capped off with a day on Sandy Island. This was a lifelong dream come true and we are very thankful to all the wonderful people of Anguilla who made it all possible!”

Reflecting on it, and in particular our wedding celebration at Zemi Beach House Hotel & Spa, I can’t help but become nostalgic! Luc had been coming to Anguilla for several years before we met. we would be getting married right here! We wanted a very simple but elegant wedding. He had brought me to Shoal Bay and Zemi Beach to visit on my first time around. There was something magical about the place. I still, to the day, can’t put my finger on it! From the initial call enquiring about holding our reception at Zemi, to our departing embrace from the staff, we felt in good and very capable hands. CONTINUED...

Although our wedding was a small affair, no details were spared. Jennifer Liebsack, the resort’s Events Manager, took special care of us. Whether it was the choice of celebrant, the details of the ceremony, the accommodations on the site, the coordination and logistics of the day, the choice of photographer, the food, the wine and all else in between, Jen took care of everything, and the team made this day incredibly memorable! A special thought immediately comes to mind for Kevin Archibald of KSharp Photography. Given that Luc and I were celebrating this event on our own, having

110

a master photographer on hand to capture every detail for our family and friends was of utmost importance. Kevin’s artistic eye, and the sheer beauty of the site made the memories stand out! A special bond was formed with the staff members who attended and served as witnesses for the ceremony. I remember looking at one of them after we exchanged our vows and I could see a tear running down her cheek! That, in my eyes, captured the commitment they had in making this day memorable for us. I’m truly grateful to Zemi Beach, the entire team and, in particular, to Jen for making our day so special!”

SMALL, INTIMATE WEDDINGS “Small does not mean Simple,” say’s Amelia Vanterpool Kubish, Wedding Planner for Blue Sea Anguilla. “Whether a couple has chosen to celebrate their special day by eloping, having a bountiful celebration or an intimate gathering, Anguilla offers a beautiful backdrop; beach, garden, private villa, a boat, an offshore cay or a sandy cove are just some of the settings available. Over the years, we at Blue Sea Anguilla have assisted many couples, including those who chose to elope and others who celebrated with 4-20 guests. With our unique approach to service and making memories, we believe that every client deserves unlimited amounts of special personal attention. Smaller does not mean simpler – attention to detail is still a must, and we offer wedding packages for those who just want a little helping hand and the benefit of our years of experience, as well as those who want a little more pampering or fully customized services and, regardless of the level of co-ordination requested, we are always happy to bring a couple's bespoke ideas to life.”

ride and groom to be, Erin and Brian were getting married on Anguilla in December 2017. 60 guests planned to celebrate with them at Frangipani Beach Resort and Straw Hat, but on September 6th, they looked on in horror as their beloved island and precious wedding plans were steamrollered by Hurricane Irma. After making sure her friends on island were ok, Erin decided to visit Anguilla herself to see just what the situation was, and arrived one month later, armed with solar lights, donations for the devastated primary schools and a can-do attitude. After working alongside the Frangipani restoration team Erin’s stay in hurricane-torn Anguilla just strengthened her resolve to marry on “The Rock”. Her positive attitude and exceptional generosity of spirit in putting their special day on hold make this couple true hurricane heros in our eyes – we are delighted to report that Erin and Brian are getting married in Anguilla in June 2018 because, “We still really want to bring 60 people to beautiful Anguilla.”

DESIGN FOR GOOD

Anguillian homes are built with cisterns to supply their own water and, at a safe ‘set back’ from the ocean. Building a private home on the beach is (mainly) prohibited. Andy, a graduate of The Spitzer School of Architecture at City College, NYC, and a Rose Fellow, has used his skills in architecture, interior design, construction management and project management on a many private homes and tourism properties (most recently Zemi Beach) all of which weathered the storm. He fuses international education with local intelligence to produce, “what I like to call “design for good”. I listen to what my client wants and I give them honest feedback. I translate that into a design that meets their needs and which can really work here. I have a great track record for doing that.

hile many of our neighbouring islands lost huge amounts of their housing stock to Hurricane Irma, Anguilla weathered the storm remarkably well, not because we got of lightly, simply because we build strong, Anguilla Strong. Anguillian properties are built to last and weather the toughest of storms, local architect Vanburn (Andy) Brookes of Morlens Architecture Services says that building strong is fundamental part of Anguillian culture. “We own our own land and we own our own property. We protect it and no one tells us what to do with it. We build to keep and to pass down, not to sell. Anguillians build for safety and longevity. They normally pour concrete roofs and use robust material with a long shelf life.”

Sir Keith and Lady Sabine Whitson

LIVING THE DREAM, AFTER IRMA

I I

f you were due to complete the purchase of your dream vacation home just days after it had been hit by a Category 5 hurricane - would you still go through with it? This adventurous couple did. After seeing images in the media of Anguilla being pummelled by Hurricane Irma many would have been put off - but not Sir Keith and Lady Sabine Whitson. Instead of backing out they came to see for themselves - arriving into a battered Anguilla shortly after the storm. Staying at Carimar Beach Club they found themselves swimming in Meads Bay alongside the 40 plus British Marines who had been sent by the British Government to help with urgent repairs! A well travelled couple (they have lived and worked in many countries including the USA, UK, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Germany and New Zealand) Sir Keith and Lady Sabine first visited Anguilla in 2014 on a sail boat and spent lots of time exploring the beaches- vowing to return. But it wasn’t until

they sold their home in New Zealand that their quest to find “a nice warm spot” to spend winters with their UK based family, led them back to Anguilla. Sir Keith registered his interest with Elaine Herne at Properties in Paradise keeping up with the latest listings via her website and regular news blasts - but it wasn’t until he received the news that the Government of Anguilla dropped transfer fees from 15% to 10%, that the former Group Chief Executive of HSBC started his search in earnest. Impressed by pictures of the architectural gem Bird of Paradise and after lots of calls and correspondence with Elaine, Sir Keith put

thorough once over and concluded it was in excellent condition and that the structure of the property is superb. We also received outstanding service from our solicitor Eustella Fontaine and advice from our neighbour - the architect Andy Vanburn... Sabine and I lived in the Far East for many years and are used to typhoons in Hong Kong. We’ve seen how quickly, in the tropics, everything grows back and rejuvenates... we could see the dramatic efforts everyone made and the commitment to repair Anguilla, and we were impressed. .. Being here after Hurricane Irma was an unusual introduction to the island but it went far better that you would anticipate!"

in an offer which was accepted. In February his wife and their two daughters came to explore Anguilla and fell in love with the villa, confirming Keith’s choice. They were due to complete on Sept 14th - and then came Irma. I asked Sir Keith what made them stick with Anguilla after the storm. “We had a lengthy meeting with the previous owners, who were extremely helpful and provided lots of information , sharing contacts and resources. We gave the villa a

The Whitsons are already familiar faces on ‘the Rock’, visits to local restaurants such as Roy's and Johnnos meant they were introduced and welcomed into the community. Their children and grandchildren visited in November and gave “The Bird” and Anguilla’s beaches an enthusiastic ‘thumbs up’. Although planning to spend lots of time here, they will continue to rent out the property - great news for repeaters, and those who have always wanted to experience the charms of this spectacular villa.

nguilla’s real estate market has never looked more enticing post Irma. Stunning new properties and condo developments are coming on line and of course there is always the possibility of picking up a ‘bargain’ a property that has been ‘slightly distressed’. JACKIE PASHER OF Island Dream Properties is confident that Anguilla’s appeal is undimmed and enduring and she’s been through this all before! A former Sales and Marketing maestro in the Hotel Industry, Jackie and her then husband moved to Anguilla from Atlanta in 1992 and shortly afterwards opened Tropical Penguin, a fondly remember beach bar in Sandy ground. It was a lively popular spot “you could see my hot pink umbrellas from Sandy Island” until along came Hurricane Luis to blow it all away. Despite a number of setbacks Jackie was in love with Anguilla and decided to stay, working at Anguilla Rums, until, sitting at Uncle Ernie’s one day, she realised, after being asked for the umpteenth time to find a house for someone to rent, she should open her own rental villa and real estate company, Jackie prides herself on friendly, personal service and builds long lasting relationships with her clients and staff. Patra Brodie, her concierge, has been with her for 14 years and Dolly Peters, who assists with reservations, for four.

REAL ESTATE AGENT and resident philosopher, Adrian Kobbe, of Gum/ko says the number one reason for living in Anguilla is it offers “a beautiful freedom.” Kobbe, born and educated in Germany lived in Paris, LA, Mexico City and Caracas before finally settling in Anguilla. A student of both architecture and philosophy he’s also worked in fashion & interior design and restoring churches. The first person he met in Anguilla was Rendezvous Bay Hotel founder Jeremiah Gumbs and he subsequently teamed up with his son Alan Gumbs to form Gum/ko International resulting in an enduring partnership which started with the transformation of the Warden’s House into the Koal Keel, a complex project that ultimately turned him into an expert in recreating old Caribbean houses! The son of a theater director and producer and father to critically acclaimed writer Montague Kobbe, Adrian has a particular approach to real estate. “Typically people work with me when they are looking for quality living - a home to retire to and relax in, not just as a financial investment”. Does he worry that Irma has affected Anguilla badly? He shrugs his shoulders nonchalantly. “No. It’s the same place. Clean air, beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, starry skies, good food plus safety and personal freedom. Keeping these essential ingredients, there is - thankfully - little change.”

ELAINE HEARNE OF Properties in Paradise had plenty of new listings and has already sold properties post Irma and is confident it will be a busy year in Anguilla’s Real Estate community: “A combination of the market being on an upswing prior to Hurricane Irma and reduction of taxes by the Government of Anguilla and the possibility of buying slightly distressed properties with owners who don’t have the energy or inclination; combined with new purchasers, with new ideas and the energy and vision to make a project happen mean’s this season is going to be a great one.“ Subscribe to Properties in Paradise email newsletter to keep up to speed with what’s happing in the luxury property market or pop into their attractive office in South Hill to browse latest listings and meet Elaine and team in person.

BETTER FOR BUSINESS

DESPITE THE RAVAGES wrought on Anguilla’s infrastructure by Irma Category 5 winds (it has been well documented that island wide electricity took 100 days to restore!) The Valley, Anguilla’s administrative and financial centre got back to business swiftly and financial institutions such as Anguilla Finance, ACORN, Anguilla’s on line company registration system and Counsel Limited a licensed fiduciary, maintained service so international clients could continue to register businesses and do business in Anguilla or internationally from Anguilla. STEVE GARLICK OF Anguilla Finance says that our beautiful beaches, great cuisine and friendly people are definitely not all Anguilla has to offer: “the financial services industry is a significant contributor to the island’s economy. Our zero-tax environment and lack of exchange controls are especially attractive components of our appeal and, coupled with our reputation as a well-regulated jurisdiction, mark us out as an enlightened financial services centre. We have a modern suite of financial services legislation, a very smooth and efficient online company incorporations procedure, and sophisticated, professional service providers with client satisfaction at the heart of all they do. If you can find time in your vacation, contact Anguilla Finance. We would be delighted to discuss what Anguilla has to offer, apart from those 33 beaches.”
