e hope you enjoy this second edition of True Anguilla. Thanks to the readers who gave us feedback via our survey (and congratulations to our prize winners). We have listened to you, and this year have provided more information on buying a property and living in Anguilla and on having your destination wedding event here. We continue to highlight the three main reasons people give for coming back to Anguilla year after year: People, Beaches and Food and to ask our favourite visitors and
Anguilla friends and family to tell you what they love about our unique island. If you have never been to Anguilla, prepare to be entranced. Anguilla is luxurious yet low key. It’s special. It’s like no other place you’ve been before – and is best explained by telling you what it does not have: no allinclusive resorts, chain restaurants, casinos, large cruise ships, huge shopping malls, traffic jams, wailing sirens – and of course, “no worries.” We hope you truly enjoy Anguilla, Orrett & Trudy.

people The hospitality of our people is one of the main reasons visitors love and keep returning to our island. Historian Colville Petty, OBE explains why:
© Josveek Huligar / anguilla access
“Anguilla has long been renowned for its hospitality which has deep historical roots. The spirit of caring and sharing was born out of the harsh experiences of a resolute people. A history of hardships, brought about by prolonged droughts and famines, a shallow soil and the onslaught of severe hurricanes, gave birth to a culture of interdependence, caring and sharing – of one hand washing the other.”

Their knowledge of the island: how to get here, where to go, what to do and most importantly who does what, is encyclopedic. Visitors tell us that “the People” are the reason they keep coming back to the island, and Mimi and Amelia are definitely two of those “people.” relationship based on a love of their island This dynamic duo have introduced home and mutual support of Anguilla’s thousands of visitors to the delights of innovative “High value/Low volume” tourism Anguilla, and their warm island welcome plan. on-island activities for the luxury “incentive” market. Tiny Anguilla, with its boutique hotels is not the first place that springs to mind when it comes to corporate travel, but thanks to Blue Sea and hotel partners like CuisinArt, Viceroy and Cap Juluca – the island now attracts the “crème de la crème” of incentive groups by offering unbelievably luxurious experiences for President’s Clubs and Chairmen’s Circles from some of the world’s leading brands. “The participants often haven’t heard of Anguilla, and they love it – they feel like they’ve ‘discovered’ somewhere special – then they go back home and boast about the experience to friends and colleagues.” They also offer Wedding Coordination (Amelia’s area of expertise) and Film Production Services (Mimi’s “baby”). The cool, calm and collected Amelia is the perfect person to soothe the prewedding nerves of jittery Brides and Grooms, and she smiles as she recounts the story of one couple who argued after they arrived on island, split up and 48 hours prior to the event asked her to cancel the wedding (which she did). She let them “cool down” then happily rearranged everything 24 hours later – much to everyone’s relief! The boundlessly energetic Mimi will “flex all her muscles” and utilize her enormous database – great contacts and goodwill – to meet the needs of the international film crews that repeatedly return – leading one client to say “it’s easier to get things done here than in New York City!” The ladies are fulsome in praise for their huge network (sometimes over 100 local contacts can be involved in successfully delivering a large event) of government officials, Blue Sea staff, hotel & restaurant teams, transportation, décor, photographers and musicians – the professional and friendly “Blue Sea Family” who help them create exceptional visitor experiences.
! QUESTIONS A n swer ed What do most brides want?
“Most requests are for weddings on the beach, but we also do boats, local churches, hotels and private villas. Currently we’re experiencing a trend towards ‘ceremonial’ events for couples who have already legally married offisland but want an exquisite experience to share with friends and family.” Why come here for photoshoots?
“It’s fascinating, because although we have wonderful backdrops, you can’t see much of the island in the end shots! Art Directors and Photographers say they ‘love the light, a feeling they get, and because the models are more relaxed and you can see it in their eyes.’” How does a big group get here?
“Via Princess Juliana in neighbouring SXM – one of the best served Caribbean airports. We plan arrivals and departures meticulously, and our excellent suppliers (boat and plane charter companies) can help us move small groups or even hundreds of visitors equally effortlessly.” ANY unusual requests?
“From opening up a locked church to arranging a Caribbean cooking competition for 200, babysitting a $100,000 wedding gown, organizing a Pirate Party or a Beach Olympics, even escorting a half million dollar necklace to a photo shoot! The list goes on and on!” What’s unique about Anguilla?
“We say it gives you ‘Permission to relax’. Groups schedule lots of activities – concerned they won’t have enough to do, but by day two, most delegates are cancelling their trips and excursions in order to do nothing but relax!”

why we love anguilla
people
“We came to Cap Juluca 20 years ago for a romantic vacation and we fell in love with the quiet elegance of the island and the warmth of the Anguillian people. We wanted to return every year. It was only a matter of time until we purchased our oceanfront lot with its spectacular views of St Martin. With the help of our local architect and the designer who created the décor at the Four Seasons Nevis, we built Villa Alegria as our island oasis. We love Anguilla, and now consider it our home. The azure blue waters, powdery white sand, outstanding restaurants, scuba diving, bike riding and gentle ocean breezes keep us young.” Neil & Wendy Freeman, Ocean’s Edge and Villa Alegria What I like about Anguilla... its unique lifestyle! We still have no bus services; persons without their own vehicles still depend on a neighbor or friend for a ride. We don’t have casinos, big shopping malls or large tourist ships on island. It is a real treat to vacation on this little island. It’s peaceful and tranquil! People are casual and very friendly. Oh man... the beaches are second to none, breathtaking!!! We have 33 white sand powdery beaches on Anguilla and all are unique. You will find very talented musicians, artists and vocalists (singers). I like the fact that you can have fried fish with the head and not just fillet (a dash of lemon) with the famous Johnny cakes or just a home grown salad. Ena Boasman-Hodge, Chef Concierge, CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa
We love Anguilla because the minute we step off the ferry, we feel like we are home. The people of Anguilla are the most welcoming, of all the islands we have visited. We have returned each year for the past 12, and we will continue to return for many years. I have been diving for over 30 years. The diving is wonderful and Special “D” Diving (Doug Carty) is the safest and best dive operation I have ever experienced. Dave & Sandy Gleed, Anguilla visitors for 12 years
Living in Anguilla is an investment in savoir-vivre. Crisp, breezy fresh air, zero pollution! Plenty of superb restaurants. Plenty of delicious fish in the restaurants. Rainwater to run your bathtub. A bank or a shop where you still can park in front! No traffic jams, the most beautiful commuter drive in the world if you decide to open a business or an office. A paradise for small children, sand and beach & beach and sand! Gorgeous rainbows, lovely sunsets and a pretty, pretty starry sky! Lifestyle luxuries. Quality time for the soul and the body! Come! adrian kobbe, Gum/Ko International Property Agents
My abiding memory of Anguilla is white and blue. White sandy beaches, turquoise blue sea and big sky everywhere. What makes Anguilla special is the absolute freedom to do what you like when you like. No wristbands, no schedule. My best Anguilla moment? Lunch in Scilly Cay – sitting at a wooden table on a desert island in my swim suit, bare feet in the sand, cold glass of white wine and a freshly grilled lobster. free wifi --------------------Anguilla is a great place to visit if you simply can’t bear to put your smart phone down/are addicted to social media, as FREE wi-fi is widely available – at hotels, villas and many restaurants.
As a social media maven/addict, one of the things I love most about Anguilla is the pervasive WiFi. Almost every bar, restaurant or shop you go to has reliable, password-free wi-fi that enables lightning-fast Insta/Facebook/Twitter uploads of my island adventures. I swear that just driving around you can almost always pick up a wi-fi signal! And I love that Anguillians are so social-media savvy. They do a stellar job as internet ambassadors for their island, and it’s always my pleasure to connect with them, whether online or in person.” Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon, Caribbean travel expert, JetSetSarah.com

If we had to describe why we love Anguilla in one word it would be beaches. The numerous stunning white sand beaches and tranquil aqua-blue water are the big draw to Anguilla, however once you visit you find so many other reasons to love the island. You can always find live music at one of the beach bars, and trips to Scilly Cay, Prickly Pear and Sandy Island will put a smile on your face. There are amazing restaurants, luxury accommodations and, more importantly, warm and caring people. Anguilla is a safe, peaceful island that holds a special place in our hearts. One love. You know those ads featuring tropical beaches? The ones showing impossibly clear, blue water and powdery, pure white sand? The ones that look so perfect you assume they must have been “touched up”? Our beaches look like that for real. They don’t need to be touched up. They really are that pristine, that beautiful, that empty…
beaches Anguilla has so many beautiful beaches it’s hard to choose just one! I do love the character and many coconut trees that cling to the shore of Shoal Bay East – just there in front of Gwen’s place. It makes you feel like you are on ‘another planet’ as it’s so gorgeous! susan croft, Photographer, Susan Croft Photography 40

Every time I visit Anguilla I‘m in for a culinary treat, however, I am always torn between revisiting old favourites and checking out what’s new. There’s never enough time to do it all. For such a tiny Island the choice and quality of dining options available is literally overwhelming. Frank Pierce, Director of Sales & Marketing, Anacaona Boutique Hotel

You will never have a problem finding something delicious to savour in Anguilla, but you may have a struggle choosing where to eat – with over 100 restaurants to choose from, the choices are many.
eat out Jackie Ruan, the owner of Ripples in Sandy Ground, is famous for her big personality and Saturday Night Happy Hour (5 til 7). The cozy restaurant also serves a reasonably priced, eclectic mix of tasty dishes prepared by veggie Chef Janis and Caribbean Chef Glendon.
Oldfavourites If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it
The Ferryboat Inn (30 years old this year!) is known for steaks and its popular “Wednesday Wings Night” which locals and tourists flock to. New for the season is “Friday Curry Night” which we are sure will be a big success. 72

There is a very good reason why guests return year after year to their “old favourites” – it’s because they welcome you “home” like family and offer that special combination of ambiance and signature dishes that you’ve been dreaming of since the last time you were here. Restaurants that stand the test of time in Anguilla are always busy – so be sure to make a reservation.
Johnno’s, also in Sandy Ground and now in its 31st year, keeps doing what it’s always done best – great jazz on a Sunday and delicious fresh fish (we recommend it “Anguilla style” – steamed and with the head still on).
Another great place for steak is Kirk Hughes’ Flavours at La Vue, which continues to be “the place” to experience a fine steak or local cuisine.

Oceanfront Straw Hat was recently named one of Fodor’s top 10 Caribbean restaurants – beloved signature dishes are mixed with daily specials from Chef Nick Dellinger. The warm welcome from owners Anne and Peter Parles and their outstanding team never changes.
eat out Chef Carrie Bogar’s Veya is no longer the new kid on the block – but it continues to shine with its stylish interior, wonderful service and “Cuisine of the Sun.” Husband Jerry will guide you through their outstanding wine list, and you can enjoy live music at least 3 nights a week in-season.
Picante, Anguilla’s very own Caribbean Taqueria is still the best place to go for magnificent margaritas, tasty tacos, a great vibe and the fastest service in the West!
Oldfavourites
Busy Nico’s in The Valley is an institution and a great place to “eat where the locals eat.”
For fine Caribbean food at a reasonable price, you can’t beat E’s Oven – Chef Vernon’s cooking is delicious and inventive, and he always features fresh daily specials. Look forward to his “Chef’s Surprise.”

When you think of Anguilla, “shopping is not what comes to mind! But Anguilla has a wonderful array of shops and there are new ones coming on-line regularly. Boutiques with gorgeous fashion, must have accessories, island designed t-shirts, local art and craft galleries, handmade candles and soaps, and stores with an array of goodies. I recommend exploring to find that take-home treasure! Carolyn Brown, CSB Communications, UK

If you have the energy to do more than rub suntan lotion onto your travelling companion, download your next bestseller or raise your arm for beach service, here’s a roundup of shopping opportunities and some Anguilla activities you might like to try.

what we love
beach towels --------------------Irie Life’s luxurious Anguilla national colours (turquoise, white and orange) Egyptian cotton beach towels.
The colourful and hip Irie Life shops – one in South Hill and one in Sandy Ground – have shopping for all the family and are packed to the brim with not only interesting tee-shirts but also caps, resort wear, “Rasta” themed gifts and funky jewelry.
take home a PIECE of thERock Shopping & art
People USED to say there was no shopping in Anguilla. Not anymore. Now there is a plethora of charming, unique boutiques and art studios featuring the work of local artists – so there’s plenty to tempt you off the beach and out for a browse.
what we love
kids’ clothes --------------------Their funky line of children’s clothing.
Pretty Bijoux boutique in Sandy Ground Village stays open late (in high season) so you can pop by before or after dinner. Known for their exciting collection of designer silver, we also recommend their unique French clothing line, and their bags and purses are very tempting, too. 90

Anguilla’s own Fashion Cuts earrings are bang on-trend, as talented husband and wife design team, Daryl and Vanessa Thompson, create a new collection every season. Find them in shops like Petal’s Boutique and Blu Boutique at CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa. You can also buy direct from the designers. Anguilla’s own Caribbean Soaps & Sundries are a great way to stock up on something fragrant, and make great souvenirs .
Opposite Bijoux is the Lynne Bernbaum Art Gallery, and a visit and chat with the Artist is highly recommended. Lynne’s memorable paintings and prints – created in, and inspired by her life in Anguilla – are treasures to grace your home when you leave the island.

Christmas ornaments --------------------Pam has lots of items that are made in Anguilla – but our fun favourites are the cute Christmas decorations and her famous rum punch!
Seaspray Boutique (easy to spot close to the Sandy Ground Roundabout) doubles as the Iced ‘n Easy Smoothie Shop AND informal tourism office! Take the time to call in and chat with the owner Pam, who is a font of island information and is happy to have her brains picked whilst she’s making or embellishing craft items to sell in the shop.

Give them a few days’ notice and an idea of what you like and they will bring a selection of jewelry to your villa or hotel for a private trunk show! How glam is that?
If you want to spoil yourself (or someone wants to spoil you) with a piece of fine jewelry – we suggest you check out Diamonds International – they have spectacular lines – including the exclusive “Crown of Light” 90-facet premium diamond which bedazzles the most sophisticated collector, the Safi Kilima tanzanite collection and the latest of John Hardy designs – all of which are competitively priced (tax free!!). 92

KITEBOARDING
The spectacular and physically challenging sport of Kiteboarding is not for the fainthearted. Anguilla has been the “best-kept secret” for experienced practitioners for some years (apparently our “off shore” wind conditions are second to none) but now the secret’s out and Anguilla Watersports are offering both equipment rental and professional kiteboarding instruction, and promise to get you from “Zero to Hero” in two days.
ExcitingTIMES Active and thrilling adventures
stand up paddleboarding & kayaking Stand Up Paddleboarding and Kayaking are increasingly popular Anguilla activities, and the calm and picturesque Road Bay and Crocus Bay/ Little Bay areas are particularly appropriate places to enjoy the sports with your family. Visit Sea Pro Charters' watersports centre in Sandy Ground (they also have an aqua trampoline that children love) or da’Vida Bayside where you can paddle round to Little Bay. Anguilla Watersports offer instruction, will deliver paddleboards to your resort or villa and offer a range of SUP tours.

If you prefer to absorb your culture sitting down with a drink in your hand, we suggest you go see the Mayoumba Folkloric Theatre perform at Anacaona Boutique Hotel (every Thursday night). Enjoy a tasty buffet of authentic Anguillian food as the lively group of local singers and performers tell the history of Anguilla in song and verse.
Interesting TIMES Museums, culture and fun children’s activities
It’s a sweet thing! Kel’s Candy and Ice Cream shop in North Hill (close to Sandy Ground) is popular with tourists and locals alike, and is a fun place to call into for candy, ice cream, hotdogs and fresh popcorn. They also have a small playground and free movie screenings for children (ask your concierge to check days/times).
If you are interested in Anguilla’s history and culture, your first stop must be the Heritage Collection Museum, run by acclaimed writer and historian Colville Petty, OBE – who is more than likely to personally show you round! The small museum is located in East End Village and is packed to the brim with artifacts and information that describe Anguilla’s history from ancient times to modern day. Truly fascinating! 100

boat trips to offshore cays and other islands
if you love the throb of an engine (!) Call Lyle, the charming Captain of the GB Ferries which are known for their excellent airport shuttle service but also offer luxurious day charter boat trips to neighbouring St.Barths and St.Martin. No trip to Anguilla is complete without a boat trip with one of our friendly captains and crew – all of whom offer private charters as well as scheduled trips (these can be a lot of fun as you get to meet other Anguilla guests).
if you love the sound of wind in the sails Join Anguilla’s beloved Captain Rollins on his catamaran Chocolat on a whole day trip to Sandy Island or the more remote Prickly Pear Cay, and enjoy rum punches and lunch at Johnno’s on the Cay or Prickly Pear Bar & Grill – probably the most relaxing day you can imagine. Sail with Laurie & Deb and the crew of the beautiful sloop Tradition on one of their fabulous Sunset Cruises to Little Bay – featuring gourmet food from talented Chef Mark Alvarez.

We ask Ena Boasman-Hodge, Chef Concierge at CuisinArt Resort & Spa, and also member of Les Clefs d'Or USA to give us her Anguilla “must do’s”
anguilla must do’s Sail away with Tradition: take a day or a sunset sail and you will never be the same again! Experience the beauty of assisting with the sailing duties or just relax and enjoy the tranquil waters of Anguilla. Sandy Island Excursion: get away to an off shore cay (about 15 minutes' sail across the ocean), relax and be amazed by the beauty of the island from the water. Swim or snorkel in crystal clear waters and see some of the prettier fishes; or enjoy a scrumptious lunch. Swim with the Dolphins: fun with the gentle mammals for the entire family. Island Tour: View some of our historical sites and receive a great overview and narration of the island’s people and its history. Cooking Classes at Cuisinart Golf Resort & Spa: There are 2 classes offered: • Japanese cooking class – on Mondays • Local cooking class – on Fridays Hydroponic Tour: explore the only farm of its kind on the island in a hotel setting, guided by the well known Dr. Resh. See the many vegetables grown in solution; very healthy for the body, and the taste is extraordinary. My recommendation: when you’ve completed the tour, visit one of the restaurants on the property for lunch and experience the vegetables grown in the garden and used in the food; you won’t regret it!

Anguilla’s Michelangelos
Photo: jackie cestero
You may be surprised to know that there are currently 20 young Anguillians studying fine art – specifically the incredible “hyper-realism” techniques created by contemporary trompe l’oeil master painter Anthony Waichulis – at the Ani Art Academy. The ongoing art education program is free and is a gift to the people of Anguilla from Tim Reynolds – the owner of the ultra luxurious Ani Villas. A visit to the Academy’s purpose-built studio is an interesting thing to do if you have more than a passing interest in fine art. Watching the students silently study their subjects and accurately reproduce them down to the minutest details calls to mind a modern Michelangelo’s studio. Resident Tutor Timothy Jahn says that the three year apprenticestyle training teaches the students “a huge amount of personal dedication, skill and confidence,” and should also open up career opportunities. Paintings by Anthony Waichulis can command over $20,000 – so get in early – as the students’ work may become collector’s items one day! Students are allowed to sell their finished work and drawings, and oil paintings start at $250. PLEASE note: visits to the school are by appointment only, Mon. to Fri., 9am–4pm. Call 498-8899 to arrange a viewing to avoid being turned away.

Boobies, Bats & Ground Lizards
If you and your family are into wildlife and nature, an “off the beaten track” activity is to take a Nature Explorers Anguilla tour with wildlife photographer Jacqueline A. Cestero. She may have published a bird book called From Bananaquits to Boobies but she can also tailor your tour to introduce you to non-feathery friends like ground lizards and other indigenous creatures. If you are up for a short hike, she can take you on a trail through Anguilla’s small rainforest and past mangroves to see some ancient caves where you can observe bats nesting. And of course, you can also see lots of Anguilla’s famous goats as you go around.

a beautiful gift for a beautiful cause If you would like to hunt down a special souvenir of your time in Anguilla and would like to give back at the same time, look out for Kemarley of Anguilla. Actress Annie Potts, a long-term visitor to the island, has written and illustrated a beautiful children’s book about a special boy – Kemarley Brooks. The colourful book features pictures of Kemarley, wearing blue swimming goggles, enjoying his life in Anguilla: relaxing in a hammock, sitting under a flamboyant tree, watching boat races and singing to the dolphins. The heartwarming book’s storyline sends a strong message of love and hope. Kemarley is a special needs child, and all proceeds from sales of the book and a series of greetings cards will go to benefit special needs children in Anguilla via the Arijah Children’s Foundation and its Blossom Centre. The books and cards can be found in the shops mentioned on pages 90-94 and at the Venus Spa Shop at CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa. If you would like to visit the Blossom Centre and see the excellent work the Foundation does, please call 235-2742.

People call Anguilla “sleepy”, and they are right - Anguilla has been the sleeping giant of the Caribbean. We have a lime for everyone. If you choose to sit on a beach and read a book, that’s OK. If you want to go bar hopping, that's OK. If you want to be a foodie and eat at over 100 eateries, that's OK. If you want to dance the night away with the locals, that is definitely OK. josveek huligar, Anguilla Access
liming Liming later? During your time in Anguilla, you’ll hear this question often. Liming is a Caribbean* thing. It means hanging out in a public place with friends, enjoying the scene. We like to lime in Anguilla. Come lime with us.

uthentically Caribbean, utterly unique and of exceptional quality, Anguilla offers up a range of special interest festivals that are worth making a return trip for. The vibrant Festival del Mar at Island Harbour takes place annually on Easter Saturday and Sunday and is a feast of delicious fishy food, family fun, local music and sporting activities (fishing competitions, swimming and crab races!) all revolving around the sea.
May is a busy month as the Anguilla Lit Fest “a literary jollification” brings internationally acclaimed writers and poets to interact with local and international delegates in a fascinating long weekend of workshops, presentations and social activities. The charming Welches Festival showcases old time Anguilla with local food and cultural performances in a village setting. In July ”pre-Carnival” events such as the South Valley Street Fair provide a warm up for Summer Festival.

The Anguilla Wedding Market is one of the best in the Caribbean. There is something for the luxury bride as well as the budget conscious bride. There are resorts, restaurants, churches and awesome beach locations for the couple to choose from. When I was on-island in March, I had the pleasure of meeting with planners from Blue Sea Anguilla and found them to be knowledgeable and well connected . They can help make any couple’s vision come true. Looking forward to working with them in the near future. There are no beaches and no blue water like that in Anguilla. We vacationed on many islands in the Caribbean before deciding to build our dream home here. It started with a day trip to Anguilla 16 years ago. We fell in love with the people, the beaches and the best food in the Caribbean, so we kept coming back! After acquiring the land, our next step was to find an architect. After several recommendations and upon seeing some of his previous projects, Ian Edwards of Sunset Homes – known locally as ‘Sugar George’ – was our choice. He has since won five International Architectural Awards. Joel and Robin Globus, Tequila Sunrise Villa

Although there are many that do – not everyone that moves to Anguilla comes simply to relax and enjoy the good life. Anguilla is home to a number of entrepreneurs whose consultancy skills or internet-based businesses allow them to pursue exceptional careers as they “live the dream” on our precious piece of rock.

“Honey, I’m ready to move to Anguilla Now”
M
elinda and Terry were out to dinner 15 years ago when she finally said, “Honey, I’m ready to move to Anguilla.” It was music to her husband’s ears. They had enjoyed annual scouting trips – visiting many different islands – but with both having successful careers in the medical field, timing was crucial. The couple first visited Anguilla in 1990 and from that moment, Melinda kept a picture of the cottage they rented on her desk to remind her of “the most peaceful place we’ve ever been;” and she has just completed a book about their experiences coming to Anguilla. When they finished building in 2002, Melinda’s consultancy, ClienTell, was flourishing and she hoped to continue helping her clients measure and manage customer loyalty. It was a pleasant surprise to see her 136

business grow “because multiple flights to the USA and France from neighbouring Sint Maarten made it easy to have both American and European clients.” She cites good internet service, along with a gratifying amount of local work – especially for clients in financial services and hospitality, as a factor. Her husband puts her acceptance into the local business community down to “outstanding teaching and analytical skills, volunteering for the Chamber of Commerce, and a genuine desire to help her clients succeed.” Terry’s career as a “Medical Inventor and Entrepreneur” continues to yield fascinating results, but he’s much more interested in talking about what Melinda calls “his hobby, and Patrick’s business” – fishing alongside his friend, Patrick Webster, on his boat, Bateau Godot – catching Yellow and Bluefin Tuna, Wahoo and Mahi-Mahi, which Pat sells to restaurants and hotels (in addition to Pat’s ongoing fishing on his own boat, Opportunity).
Terry is passionate about Anguilla’s sport fishing, a relatively unknown pastime for tourists, despite being easy to arrange and experience. And he proudly points out that Patrick recently caught a record-breaking 840-lb Blue Marlin. Melinda and Terry achieve this happy work/life balance in a graceful, light filled property named “Watercolours”, carved into the “sea-rocks” on Anguilla’s northeastern shore. The site benefits from year-round sunsets over Shoal Bay East and was chosen so they could watch the turquoise waters break over the reefs by day and the shimmering sunsets give way to the stars at night. They wanted to purchase and renovate, but with few options back then (one house too small, one too big and one built only for rentals) they reluctantly decided to build. The couple chose Anguilla for “the absolute tranquility” and because they were “made welcome from the moment we arrived,” the great food, spectacular scenery, global connectivity and “drivable roads!” They relax by enjoying their Anguilla friends and family, dining out in such a marvelous abundance of restaurants, and long, early beach walks. And for most sunsets, they can be found sitting on their deck, watching the pelicans glide over their beloved reefs while peacefully enjoying each other’s company. BELOW, FROM L-R: Melinda and Terry with their friends Sherille and Frankie Hughes; Melinda and Wilma Broaden; Terry and Teah.
! QUESTIONS A n swer ed How they discovered Anguilla…
“An old Fodor’s description of an uncrowded, peaceful British territory with nice people – and which used US current (electricity) and currency!” Why they moved here…
“We traveled to many islands, but Anguilla was the most relaxing escape from an overload of shopping malls, franchised food, traffic, noise and frenetic work and distractions. The rest – the restaurants and the reefs – made us come, but the people made us want to stay.” Would they do it again?
“Absolutely! We’d have bought (vs. built) if given a choice, but we’d choose Anguilla as our home all over again either way.” What they love most…
“Our Anguillian friends and others from many places…the tranquility and beauty… enjoying the beach, birds, and rainbows on morning walks…the sea and fishing… being wired to work anywhere in the world…and the fabulous choices for foodies like us!”

Purchasing in a resort development
uying into a carefully planned, organized and managed resort complex, operated by an internationally experienced and reputable resort operator is an increasingly popular option. Benefits include the peace of mind that comes from “turnkey” ownership – with a full resort staff looking after the property, there is nothing to do when you arrive apart from enjoy your vacation. It also means access to important family services like kids’ clubs, babysitting and the resort concierge to arrange every aspect of your vacation from rental cars and airport transfers, making favorite restaurant reservations or organizing a day trip to St. Barths. Of course, in a full-service resort you also have amenities like restaurants, fitness centers, spas and watersports “on tap.”

Buying an existing piece of real estate
t seems there’s never been a better time to look for “built property” in Anguilla. The global recession coupled with natural turnover means there are some extremely desirable properties in a range of prices currently on the market. The last 12 months have seen a steady increase in sales, and properties are still plentiful. Some benefits of buying an existing building: the land is often already alienated, so the approval process can be shortened;
you can occupy immediately (and there may already be existing rentals and therefore an immediate income) and it gives you the chance to settle into your home and determine what you want to improve before starting work. Older villas often occupy the most desirable real estate plots. Upgrades, redesigns and refurbishments can be arranged through professional building service contractors like Leeward Construction. 2014-2015

As many of our condo owners do not want to stay on-island permanently, the generation of rental income is often very attractive – marketing by our experienced team maximizes rental rates and occupancy. Lisa Basire, Zemi Beach
editor’s tip
There are really some great opportunities at the moment, even some properties that appear to be ‘off the market,’ but in fact may be available for the right offer. I am finding that property which is keenly priced has sold very fast in the last couple of years or so. With regard to sales process – I tell prospective purchasers that they are joining an exclusive club because buying (land or existing property) in Anguilla is well controlled to prevent speculation. It is set up that way to protect both residents and investors, and all purchases are carefully considered by the Government. Elaine Hearn, Properties in Paradise
I feel like it’s going to be a watershed year, and I would advise those who have been looking for the last few years to ‘get off the sidelines,’ because now’s the time to find the property of your dreams. Steve Haines, Trophy Properties
bUYING PROPERTY: THE BASIC PROCESS ------------------------------• Make your offer and deposit funds through your real estate professional, who will guide you through the process. Your chosen lawyer will draw up a “Purchase & Sales Agreement,” which outlines the stipulations of sale. • Apply for an Alien Land Holding License (ALHL) and attend an interview with the Government of Anguilla. • Once ALHL is approved, land/ property closing can take place and property is transferred into purchaser’s name (at the Department of Lands and Surveys). ------------------------PLEASE note The above information is a general guideline. For detailed and accurate information for each different type of purchase, contact one of the professionals listed on page 144.
Spend some time and shop around. You may be surprised at what you see and like. Some clients come to me with the idea they want a certain thing and then change their mind when they fall in love with something that speaks to them. For example, I once sold a one bedroom oceanfront Caribbean cottage to owners that said they wanted a modern three bedroom house with a pool! If you are not sure if you want land, an existing house or something in a development, we can advise on all and find something that suits you perfectly. Jackie Pascher, Island Dream Properties 142

The walking lady on Cove Bay was our closing image for last year. Diane Traibman spotted herself in the magazine and her husband Bob got in contact with us. It was great to meet them and hear their story and we learnt that the Traibmans have been coming to vacation to Anguilla for a number of years and have just purchased a house and moved to the island. This year’s closing image is of Alex Tiplady a visitor from the UK, having a wonderful day out on Prickly Pear.
