FOR THOSE THAT LOVE TO FLY
There are now more ways to fly into Anguilla than ever. With the comfort and convenience of a private charter, for the cost of a single seat, Tradewind Aviation operates a scheduled service from the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Check their website for timetables (at the time of going to press, flights are available from early December to April). Private charter flights to Anguilla are offered all year round.
Scheduled flights start at USD $195, plus taxes and fees each way. Itinerary changes can be made without penalty. A private charter from San Juan to Anguilla in a Pilatus PC-12 starts at USD $4,500.
Flights are operated in modern, tur bine-powered and air-conditioned Pilatus PC-12 aircraft flown by two pilots. Complimentary refreshments, snacks, wine and beer are avail able onboard. And, in San Juan, you can relax between flights in the exclusive Tradewind lounge, then depart directly to the aircraft, bypassing TSA security delays.
Other things to love about this service include the fact that itinerary changes can be made without penalty, and cancellation (outside of 24 hours before departure) results in full credit on account for one year.

helpful driving tips
STAY LEGAL
You need insurance and an Anguilla temporary driving license – your hire company will provide both.
DRIVE ON THE LEFT
In Anguilla, like the UK, we drive on the left. It’s OK to drive slowly! The speed limit is 30 miles an hour on most roads. And sometimes you will encounter livestock (look out for the goats on Jeremiah Gumbs Highway at dawn and dusk).
WHAT GOES AROUND
Anguilla has seven roundabouts (most of which can be found in our capital The Valley), four sets of traffic lights, two one-way streets – and no freeways (we have the Jeremiah Gumbs Highway).
Don’t be put off by the roundabouts – they are easy to navigate – just make sure you give way (yield) to any traffic coming from the right. Cars on your left must give way (or yield) to you.
DON'T GET LOST
If you stop and ask for directions, don’t be surprised if you are told to go east or west, and then so and so, and then turn by the big grape tree. Directions in Anguilla don’t always follow the international standard!
DRIVING
Andy Connor of Andy’s Car Rentals offers excellent service and is a fantastic resource for island Information. Andy recorded a helpful video to demonstrate how to navigate Anguilla’s roundabouts for TRUE Anguilla TV, so make sure to check it out on Chanel 8.
As a self-styled ‘beach hunter’ Andy loves to explore the island in one of his convertibles – and say’s what makes Anguilla so special “Is the freedom to explore on your own terms”. Make sure to say hello if you spot him in one of his famous Hello-I’m-Andy tee-shirts.
Collect your daily, weekly or monthly hire car from Andy or one of his friendly team at his gift shop at Blowing Point or have it delivered to a location of your choice.
Island Car Rentals have provided excellent service to vis itors to Anguilla for over 45 years. Family run by the Harrigan brothers, the company is based steps away from the airport and have an impressive fleet of more than 125 cars.
"We are very particular about our service. Satisfaction is our motto, and we pride ourselves on having an assort ment of vehicles to please all pockets and for always giving our clients the car that they book."

Beyond the BLUE
Written by: Rhonica Connor Photography: KSharp MediaThe waves have always played a constant game of tag with one another, while fish darted between human legs. Ask any tourist and they’ll say that, aside from the people, ‘the beaches are the best part of Anguilla’. Indeed, our beaches are perfect for relaxation and the ideal photo op, but they are more than just tranquillity wrapped in blue to me. From a young age, I realised that what is so special about Anguilla’s beaches is that they often serve as places of wisdom, community, culture and healing. The beach cures all.
Culturally, Anguillians have always held this belief in high regard. In Anguilla, our immediate thought is not to get medication when some one is sick, rather, to send them to the beach. The minute I sneezed, my entire family would rush to the beach and ‘duck’ (a term used to describe putting someone’s head under water forcefully several times) me to get the cold out of my system. When the coronavirus pandemic hit the island, Anguillians still believed that a swim at the beach would heal them faster and better than any vaccine. Even if this is just a
superstition of the healing powers of our waters, I always felt better when I got ducked in the sea.
Attached to each beach is a special group of people, older persons, aged 60 and above. They are at their beach so early and so often that, as a child, I often wondered if they were mermaids, since I only ever saw them in the water. There were many mornings when my mom and I would race with dawn to go to Rendezvous Bay, and every time we got there, the group was already submerged. They were willing to include anyone interested in their conversations,
and because of my interest I gained profound wisdom from a young age: from how to make the perfect conkie dumpling to how to keep a relationship strong.
They reminded me to cherish the life that we have, because at any second our worlds can change, turn upside down, but the sea ... the sea will always be here, unchanging. It is these special people, who you could probably still find in the sea at 5am, who taught me not only the significance of our Anguillian beaches but also the importance of life.
Love
ANGUILLA
Written by: Michael Sokolove Photography: J.Austin ProWhen I was in my-mid 20s and single, one of the ways I entertained myself, in those pre-internet days, was to browse magazine stands. I’d walk into a store, page through the magazines that seemed most alluring and buy a couple of them to take home and read.
One night I came upon a Travel and Leisure with a cover that said, simply: ‘Most Beautiful Beaches in the World’. Anguilla was featured prominently and the lead picture was of Shoal
Bay East – a long and nearly empty sweep of white sand with a few palm trees at the far end.
I remember thinking at that moment: I’m going there some day. I just need the right girl to take with me, someone who loves the beach as much as I do – and someone, I’m sure I hoped, who would look ravishing in a bikini as we walked on that powdery sand.
I did find her, and we got married. She already had a child, and then very quickly, we had one together and then another. So it took us several years before we got to Anguilla.
I can’t say that Anguilla ‘saved’ our marriage. But it enhanced it and shaped it. We started visiting when our kids were still young, when home life was busy, our careers were demand ing and money was tight. We left the kids behind and well tended. Anguilla was where we reminded ourselves why we had gotten married in the first place — why we were "at this game," as we liked to say.
We could only stay for five or six days in the beginning, though one year we did steal a little more time by sending word back home that we needed to stay on island one more day to hear our favourite band at the Pumphouse, the dearly departed juke joint that perished in hurricane Irma. We spent many late hours there and prided
ourselves on always being the last tourists amid the post-midnight crowd of Anguillians.
We have stayed mostly on Meads Bay, at Carimar, but we always rent a car and over time have gotten to every corner of the island. Yes, it’s small, but you’d be surprised how much there is to see. What we discovered early on, and what delighted us, was that with a little effort and some good water shoes, we could make our way to a beach that was literally deserted, where our footprints might be the only ones from that day – or even that week.
I always tell people: If you want to visit Anguilla, it helps if you like to walk – the soft sand on my feet feels like physical therapy – and it also is good if you like to read. Most importantly, I
think you have to dig the person you’re with, to use a phrase from the magazine-rack days. My person is Ann Gerhart, above.
When we first started visiting, we would meet these ‘old’ people who said they had been coming for 20 or 30 years, and we would think: how strange. Why would you keep coming back to the same place?
But that is us now. We’ve been visiting for a quarter-century, often more than once a year. The officers at immigration, when they look at our passports, always say, ‘welcome home’.
In an ever-noisier world, we crave Anguilla’s sense of peace, and the togetherness we always find for ourselves here. We treasure its civility. We walk the same familiar beaches but always discover something new.
And, yes, she still looks ravishing in a two-piece.

loves that ANGUILLA is not in a HURRY
Written by: Shellicia Brooks Johnson Photography: J.Austin ProChef Dale Carty, owner of the popular Caribbean-inspired Tasty’s restaurant and the fun new open-air bar and restaurant, Tasty’s Point of View, is a culinary legend on the island. Tasty’s which has been open for over twenty years is where you will find the ‘serious but delicious food’. Tasty’s POV, the after party, is quickly becoming known for its BBQ, fun cocktails and live entertainment.
You are almost certain to run into Chef Dale while visiting either restaurant. He vowed never to give up being in the kitchen and loves grilling, steaming and now smoking meats at POV. His creativity knows no bounds as he concocts new menu items and delicious sauces and seasonings which he says are the secret to the tasty meals at both restaurants.
What does Chef Dale love about Anguilla?
In his own words:
Anguilla is not in a hurry. I love it. We work hard but we are not in a hurry. I love to wake up in the morning and go to Rendezvous Bay. I jump in the sea, leave the beach at 7:45am and still make it to work for 8am. It’s the soft, chill vibe here. Relax, lose the crowd, lose the corporate mindset. Join the island vibe and chill.
dinelime&
One thing for sure is that in Anguilla there is something for every palate – authentic Caribbean, smoky finger-licking BBQ, the freshest seafood and local fish, as well as international favourites, flavoursome fusion and unique and enjoyable festivals where food is the main event.
ALL THE TIME at

somethingstraw hat
Hat serves delicious food or a cooling drink, morning, noon and night – from 7am to 9:30pm –seven days a week!
The breakfast menu is extensive and includes all the favourites, like eggs and pancakes, healthy options and, of course, Straw Hat signature dishes like Johnny cakes with lobster benedict.
Beach service starts as breakfast stops, and lunch boasts the widest selection of creative salad and sandwich choices on island (top sellers include home-cooked turkey club and a piquant tuna banh mi) all served with their famous fries. Or snack on smaller plates, like fan favourites ahi tuna flatbread, or Caribbean conch fritters, all of which can be enjoyed in the cool and breezy restaurant or served to you on the beach.
Need to eat after lunch but before dinner?
Then grab something from their late afternoon menu. Owners Peter and Anne realised that this is arrival time for many guests, and they wanted to be able to give them a meal and cocktail straight away rather than make them wait until dinner time.
The bar is open all day and the cocktail list is impressive – all drinks are expertly mixed. Dinner starts at 6pm, and if you want to have a front row seat for the sunset – reserve! Dinner choices include classic dishes like simply grilled fresh local fish or lobster, and signature dishes like fragrant curried goat and a delicious pork chop with sweet potato mash and spicy, crispy onion rings.
And if this has got your mouth watering but you’re unable to get to the restaurant in person, give them a call – Straw Hat also do takeout and delivery, within dining hours!
night date
Dining with the one you love, two romantic spots you shouldn’t miss.
CCAFÉ CELESTE AT Malliouhana, an Auberge Resort, is the perfect date night choice. This undeniably romantic restaurant is perched on the cliff side above Meads Bay and offers panoramic views along the length of the bay and out to the ocean. Come early for dinner and enjoy a sunset cocktail at Bar Soleil before. The menu showcases a mix of island and Mediterranean inspiration using the freshest seasonal produce and sea-to-table catch for signature dishes with local ingredients. With three-tiered dining levels, and water views from every table, Celeste is undeniably romantic. Savour smoked wahoo pâté, slow-roasted eggplant with a rum glaze, coconut emulsion and lemongrass relish, curried conch and grilled octopus.
If you are looking for a plate of food prepared with passion, then look no further than Ember. Chef Marc Alvarez’s wood-fired oven cuisine is mouth-watering, exciting and truly inventive. Known as a ‘foodies’ restaurant, this attractive and welcoming eatery has an excellent wine list and an ever-evolving menu. Marc’s passion for what he does shows in every bite. Menus change seasonally. At the time of going to print, dishes included local arugula and charred pear salad, local whelks escargot, fresh fois gras terrine, ricotta gnocchi al forno, wood-roasted cauliflower shawarma, crispy skin suckling pig and wood-roasted crayfish scampi. Yum.
Also perfect for lovers is Julian’s A Tropical French Bistro at Quintessence Hotel
Locally inspired favourites, timeless French dishes and col ourful vegetarian options from talented Chef Dominque are coupled with an extraordinary wine list and excellent service to make this a special dining experience.

TTASTY’S POINT OF View is just steps away from Chef Dale’s popular Tasty’s restaurant but offers a different but equally memorable and tasty experience. This chic new casual open-air bar and restaurant is quickly making a name for itself.
Our POV? Tasty’s POV is the place to be for both a scrump tious casual dinner and the after party. Experience the authentic ity of a roadside BBQ grill with a POV twist. Comfortable seating, intricate wooden artwork, a stunning sunset view overlook ing historic Sandy Ground, a great bar serving playful and delicious cocktails, themed nightly entertainment and a relaxed but ‘let’s-party’ vibe make for an amazing night out.
Picante in Anguilla’s west end is a Caribbean taqueria, beloved by locals and tourists alike. This excellent and afforda ble eatery continues to win hearts with its speedy service, delicious food, delightful colour ful interior, friendly staff and the best Margaritas on the island.
Tipsy Turtle is a new, west end neighbourhood bar and restaurant with a fun late night, which, like Picante, is only steps away from the Four Seasons. The casual roadside bar-restau rant is the creation of Jason, son of the famous Sandy Ground
Anguilla is known for its amazing beach and waterfront restaurants – but sometimes you’ve just got to go off the beaten track a little to those appealing-looking places you spot when you drive past. Tipsy Turtlegrand dame Jackie Ripples, and he knows a thing or two about hospitality. It opened during the pandemic, built a solid following with locals and has now been discovered by our visitors.
Serving a wide selection of tasty food, there is something for everyone – fish lovers should try the mahi-mahi bites, local snapper ceviche or decadent coconut shrimp. Meat lovers rave about the towering Angus beef burger, steaks and succulent rack of lamb. Tipsy Turtle is open for lunch and dinner seven nights a week, serves food until late and has regular entertainment in the form of live music, DJs and Karaoke – just check their schedule.
Mirabelle's is a small eclectic, modern internationally food forward bar & restau rant set to breathe new life into historic Koal Keel - The Warden's Place. Delightfully delicious
What do people love about Remah’s Delights?
‘The variety of food and services I offer and the consistency quality.’ I will cater a beach picnic for two or a cocktail party for 100. I am a private villa chef but I also provide catering services so you can order what you want, pick up and reheat later. I even make my own desserts. I think that clients also find it useful that I have themed menus they can choose from if they want to.
What Anguillian/Caribbean delights do you offer?
Mainly dishes where the ingredients are always readily available, for example local eggplant or seafood. People love my curried conch with dumplings, steamed fish with coconut ginger cornmeal and my sweet onion and brown sugar BBQ sauce.

Looking for some after dinner action? The Lounge Sports Bar in the West End is where the locals play pool and lime until the early hours.

Everyone SANDY GROUND loves
This popular and picturesque village is a great place to explore. The village is called Sandy Ground, but the beach is called Road Bay and one of Anguilla’s great pleasures is to walk along the gently sloping sands, and check out the wide range of restaurants, bars, shopping, art and activities on offer.
NNEW IN SANDY Ground is the delightful Vincy on the Beach which has taken over the space formerly occupied by Dad’s Restaurant.
If you crave a menu rich in local food and fantasise about eating it seaside, then Vincy on the Beach is for you. Vincia – ‘Vincy’ Hughes – has over 35 years’ culinary experience working at many of Anguilla’s
top resorts and restaurants. Anguillian delicacies like barbeque ribs and chicken, ‘stew’ curry goat or conch served with rice and peas, as well as plantain or grilled whole local snapper, lobster or crayfish (with a choice of sides) are joined by international dishes like pasta, salads, tacos and burgers. They’re open for lunch and dinner and there is a kid’s menu too – all served with an expansive beach and boat view.
Roy’s Bayside Grill is famous for its fish and chips – made from fresh island snapper – and its sand-between-your-toes vibe. A dedicated kids menu that includes sweet treats baked by Claire, and the restaurant’s proximity to the calmest beach in Anguilla mean that parents and their kids love Roy’s.
ONE OF SANDY Ground’s most popular eateries, Sandbar, has changed owners. We miss Darren and Alicia, but the good news is that it’s been taken over by the experienced restaurateur team of Carrie and Jerry Bogar of Veya, who promise to hold onto some of the restaurant’s most popular dishes, but deliver ‘Sandbar 3.0’. The beachfront spot has been lovingly refurbished and we adore the cool fresh look and feel.
Chef Carrie’s creative cuisine at Veya continues to delight and her experienced team offer the finest of dining and service experiences. Visit Meze downstairs for a more casual option. It serves small bites from Veya’s menu, as well as delicious kebabs and scrummy flatbreads. Musical entertainment is nightly.

restaurants explore aurora's
There are so many dining options on offer at Aurora that in-house guests could easily never leave the extensive dual-location property.
WWE LOVE THAT their menus feature the freshest produce from their extensive hydroponic gardens. Dining at Aurora is a wonderful way to explore the extensive property and see for yourself the enticing new outlets and activities on offer – it really is a destination not to be missed.
The varied culinary offerings honour the gastronomic heritage of Anguilla by utilising the ingredients grown, caught and raised around the island and marrying them with culinary techniques from around the globe, including a hydroponic farm. Of the mul tiple restaurants and lounges, D Richard’s is the newest – and the island’s only steak house – serving freshly caught seafood and hand-crafted cocktails. This complements the other unique outlets and menus which include authentic Caribbean flavours, seafood-centric dishes and Italian fare with Anguillian twists.
island vibes relaxing
CCOCONUTS BEACH BAR at the Anguilla Great House has a devoted and loyal following of regulars who come for Chelsea’s exceptional rum punch, a reasonably priced lunch menu that includes burgers, sandwiches, salads and pasta, served with a side of authentic and always laid-back Anguillian vibe. It is fair to say that if you are in a hurry, do not come here, but if you’re happy to while away hours jumping in the ocean and cooling out under the coconut grove with the locals, this place is for you. Fans of DJ Chu Chu Benz should visit on Sunday.
The Sunshine Shack is a top ‘must try’ spot to spend the day. Owner Garvey is a local celebrity, and his red, gold and green beach bar is famous for lip-smackingly good barbeque – smoth ered in his special sauce. Guests also love the attentive beach service and live music performances (check their schedule). And, after you have eaten and drunk your fill at Garvey’s, walk down the beach a little to Bankie Banx’s Dune Preserve for some more music and chill island vibes.
The Village Bakehouse is a brilliant place to people watch. Get there early to grab the best bread and decadent butter-laden pas tries, or sit a while and enjoy their tasty breakfast and lunch plates. Sitting at the bottom of the dock at Sandy Ground, perfectly positioned to grab a cold drink or a bite to eat after a day on one of our offshore cays is Johnno’s. Shoal Bay West
TTRATTORIA TRAMONTO ON beautiful but relatively unknown Shoal Bay West offers a ‘taste of Italy’ in Anguilla. This beachy, chic eatery is open for lunch only –but what a lunch! Here is truly a place where you can spend the day. Owners Alan and Chantal Piazzi like to say it’s a place that touches all the senses – delicious, authentic Italian food, stunning sea views, and aural delights from
Shoal Bay East
the famous TT playlists. Menu favourites include authentic Italian, home-made pastas, pizzas and panini sandwiches, delicious salads and their famous sautéed Branzino fillet.
This is truly a family-run restaurant too. Chantal’s father ran it as a rib shack back in the
day, then she and her (Italian) husband returned from living in Milan and set it up in its current manifestation. And now, two of their three sons have joined the family business – Alessandro behind the bar, and Johnny servicing cold drinks with a warm smile on the beach.
OOCEAN BEACH RESTAURANT at the pink and pretty Manoah Boutique Hotel on Shoal Bay East has one of the most enviable locations on the island. Step from the dining deck onto the white powder sands of Shoal Bay and walk back to your hotel under the stars with your loved one.
This restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and if your idea of heaven is to dine with the sound of the waves a few feet away, this is the place for you. The dinner menu includes dishes like local fish soup with croutons and rouille, and half lobster salad with exotic fruits.
Dine directly on the beach or enjoy the uncluttered open beach terrace – this is the ideal spot for watching an entrancing sunset and maybe even catching a glimpse of the famous but illusive green flash as the sun sinks into the horizon at sunset.

BEAUTIFUL, STYLISH AND unique, Villa Pastiche is a traditional Sandy Ground house with pastiche and present-day concepts. Echoing elements of the Sandy Ground landscape – with pitched roofs, shutters and stone on the ground –it's positioned between the historical salt pond and the sea, and you can feel how the natural elements have influenced the design.
Created by Rhona Richardson who grew up in the village, each of the two units (rent separately or combine) have sea and salt pond views and feature unique items inspired by the nautical world she grew up in. It’s finished to the highest standard with pieces from Marie Albert. As Rhona says, “No house in Anguilla will provide you with such a fetching, elegant country and sea feel. BBLUE SEA ANGUILLA, the island’s leading destination management company (DMC) celebrates 15 years in business this year.
They are passionate about Anguilla and make it their business (bringing corporate, wedding and other large groups to the island) to show their guests, many of whom will never have come to Anguilla before and who will have little idea of what to expect – the very best the island has to offer.
Last year Blue Sea Anguilla helped more than 5,000 guests get introduced to the unique charm of ‘The Rock’. “Many come here thinking they knew what the Caribbean was about and then are a little surprised and delighted to dis cover something unique and different. Because we make sure to show the real Anguilla.”
The Blue Sea team guides these groups
graciously, finessing each experience to tailor to their different needs, utilising local talent and respecting Anguillian culture.
Their promotion of where to go to see and do things in Anguilla has contributed significantly to the island’s economy in sus tainable ways. Mimi Gratton, the managing director, has Anguilla at heart in all she does, and knows that by promoting local musicians, makers and experiences everyone benefits. The extensive list of vendors Blue Sea Anguilla works means exposure to a large amount of people that might not normally get the chance to work together. That builds demand for their services and the products they produce, and Mimi has been gratified to see an increase in local shopping and other guest activities to present to her groups. ‘We have really bumped
up our local gift catalogue recently because there is so much more to buy and showcase in Anguilla than people realise: like Jo’s salts, Deon’s sippy bags, books, art and spa and beauty products from various small makers.’
As one client said, ‘Blue Sea Anguilla offer access in a way that shows you the heart and soul of Anguilla. Social entrepreneurship is at the core of what they do, and they operate with integrity to make Anguilla accessible for the benefit of all – without ever selling it out.’
One of the most popular Blue Sea Anguilla excursions is a guided tour of the sandy dunes, cactus grounds and windswept landscape of the far eastern end of Anguilla.village festivals
Written by: Shellecia Brooks JohnsonI love the sights, sounds and most importantly the eats at festivals. These are my top three annual village festivals.
FESTIVAL DEL MAR
IIF YOU LOVE seafood, then Festival Del Mar is a must. This annual seafood festival held in the picturesque and tranquil fishing village of Island Harbour is the most anticipated ‘lime’ of the Easter weekend. Since its inception in 2008, I have never missed it once I am on island. For two full days (Saturday and Sunday), the sleepy village of Island Harbour is abuzz. Tents and temporary structures line the beach and from them waft the tantalising smells of grilled lobster and crayfish, wahoo, mahi mahi, conch, snapper, jacks and many more of my favourites. I have never met something from the sea that I haven’t liked.
Looking towards the azure blue ocean, fishermen are setting sail on colourful boats or returning with large catches of fresh fish which ensure that there is plenty of fresh seafood from 10am to 10pm. I always get enough food to sit and enjoy a meal and bring extra bags for takeaways.
In addition to the food, I enjoy watching the joy on people’s faces, hearing the laughter of children as they jump off the wharf, listening to local performers and bands, as well as taking in a game of dominoes or crab racing. There are many activities happening at Festival Del Mar so bring your swimsuit, grab a local drink or a cocktail, find a shaded area and relax. No need to plan any other activities during this weekend.
WELCHES FEST
Welches (on the eastern side of the island before Island Harbour) is a quaint local village. This festival is held in an open field in the heart of Welches.
On arrival, the first thing I do is purchase tickets which are needed to buy food and drinks. The second thing on my list is to find the tent where the johnny cakes and other local treats like conkie dumplings and sham are being sold. While pre-cooked food is available at the festival, I go to this festival to purchase food made in the traditional way (without electricity), like johnny cakes baked in metal drums and corn soup cooked over fire and three rocks. Go early for breakfast (bush tea anyone?) and stay late for the traditional entertainment (hand-made instruments, songs, dances and games of old).
Welches Fest meets its goal of helping to keep local tradition and culture alive. If you want a taste of Anguilla of the past, then Welches Fest is a must do.
SOUTH VALLEY COMMUNITY STREET FESTIVAL
This is the only festival in Anguilla which is held on a residential street. Held on the first Saturday in August, this street festival is a welcome addition to the summer festivities. The narrow road running through this compact and close-knit community is blocked off for food vendors, artists and small entrepreneurs to set up their wares along the side of the road. As you enter, you will see a big stage where live entertainment with local performers is ongoing throughout the afternoon.
Per usual, I must purchase johnny cakes and some of the best ones are sold here at this festival. Look for an unpainted and unfinished building, venture inside and get some hot cakes with butter. They are so good.
Stroll along the street and try various foods. I usually get conch soup and local drinks in addi tion to any other treats and food which catch my eye and call to my tummy. Sample and purchase as much food as you can. It’s all delicious.
dogs
For the of love (AND
CATS!)
We’d be delighted if you would like to adopt or transport one of Anguilla’s amazing rescue pets.
TTHE ANGUILLA ANIMAL RESCUE FOUNDATION, or AARF as it is known locally, has been doing an incredible job of rescuing, rehousing and providing free spay and neuter services for stray dogs and cats for many years.
TRUE Anguilla can attest to the fact that there is nothing like an Anguilla rescue animal and if you want a permanent and endlessly loving and affectionate reminder of your time on the rock take a visit to AARF on Long Road and meet the animals up for adoption. AARF
welcomes volunteer guests to visit the shelter and play with the animals to help socialise them. Visit the Second Chances Thrift Shop to shop – or donate to support a worthwhile cause – because all proceeds from this volunteer-run store go towards funding the work of the Anguilla Animal Rescue Foundation (AARF). At the shop you will find amazing prices on new and gently used clothing for the entire family, sporting goods, beachwear, jewellery, art, books, household items and much more.
THE FLY TO Freedom Dog Rescue is a US-based 501(c)(3) all-volunteer, non-profit organisation working with AARF to get healthy and vaccinated homeless puppies from the shelter in Anguilla to the United States and Canada for adoption.
Fly To Freedom Dog Rescue works with visitors who are departing the island and who are willing to transport a puppy under their airplane seat on the return flight. All expenses for the puppy’s travel are paid for by the organisation, so there is no cost to you.
Fly To Freedom Dog Rescue does all the coordination and delivers the puppy to you in an airline-approved mesh carrier bag at Blowing Point or Anguilla airport 30 minutes before you
depart the island. They also meet you in the baggage claim of your hometown airport to collect the puppy from you.
“I love escorting a puppy to the JFK air port every time I leave Anguilla,” said Nadine DeGrange of Sayville, New York. “It’s incredibly fun, easy, rewarding and the puppy sleeps the entire time without a peep. Fly To Freedom Dog Rescue is a wonderful group of volunteers who are supportive, communicative and doing selfless work to give the Anguilla puppies a life in the US or Canada.”

shopping
There has been a gratifying boom in locally made products and shopping experiences in Anguilla, so look beyond your hotel boutique for your souvenirs.
SSTOP BY ANGUILLA Sands and Salts in South Hill to browse a range of unique, handcrafted gifts and jewellery made from Anguilla sand and try their salt tasting experience at the same time.
The salt sampling is tasty fun – it’s amazing how one flake of each flavour is enough to demonstrate just how delicious and different each of these pre cious condiments are. We bet that you will go home with at least one of the eight delicious flavours or the pure Anguilla salt.
Behind the shop you will find a perfect leafy oasis – a seating area and cute bar. Every Thursday evening you can enjoy margaritas that feature different salt flavours at the bar. There is a Salt Lab where the team can blend, mix and create more flavours. Owner Josveek explains that the salt, which you only need to use sparingly as it is very flavourful, is so good because it is 100% sea salt with no dye or additional anti-clog ging agents added, and, because they produce it in small batches as needed, it keeps the product fresh and fragrant.
LodeVole is a fabulous new fashion boutique situated in South Hill, featuring luxurious women’s wear: dresses, high-end swimwear and coverups, shorts and accessories – everything you need to outfit women of all sizes in glamourous style from head to toe. Owner Tonya describes the vibe as ‘Miami meets New York meets Milano’. Expect exciting brands like Halston for Women and Carmen Sol, alongside personalised attention – truly a destination shopping experience. Make sure to stop in at Petals Boutique, part of the Frangipani Beach Resort on Meads Bay. Here you can discover a wide selection of one-of-a-kind jewellery, hats and handbags from around the world, plus designer beachwear, Anguillabranded t-shirts and sweatshirts and a range of locally made gifts. Browsing this cool and spacious boutique always makes the TRUE Anguilla team want to buy!
If destination Anguilla teeshirts are your thing, there are plenty to choose from on island. Many restaurants sell branded wear – but none offer as much choice as Straw Hat – where you can get tee-shirts, rash guards, baseball, bucket, trucker and, of course, straw hats!
The Gift Box in George Hill is packed to the rafters and fulfils its promise to meet ‘all your gifting needs’. There are toys and gifts for all the family, cards and gifts for special occasions and their own collection of Anguillabranded merchandise. They also provide an excellent gift basket service and edible arrangements – so if you want to send a gift to someone on island – this is a great way to do it.
Irie Life fans return to the store annually to peruse the abundant collection of tee-shirts, caps, beachwear and colourful clothing in order to add this year’s hottest design. If you’re new to this beloved store, make sure to stop at their cute red, gold and green authentically Caribbean wooden building in South Hill for an irie experience.
Seaspray Boutique, (the colourful building close to the Sandy Ground roundabout) is where all the family should stop, shop and sip as you’re taking a tour of the island. Why? Because it’s very child friendly.
The Gift BoxOwner Pam not only makes hand crafted gifts but also mixes up the best smoothies on island – adults, just add rum if you fancy something stronger. Find your fun, funky and affordable Anguillian handcrafted and embellished gifts, jewellery, artwork and tee-shirts. Shop here for Anguilla Animal Rescue Foundation (AARF) items too.
Gilda Gumbs Samuel LOVES to sew – really loves to sew and her new Honey Butter and Cream is a dream come true for this prolific seamstress and carnival costume maker. Current bestsellers are her colourful fabric beach and wrist bags.
If your perfect vacation includes enjoying a premium cigar as you watch the sunset, then call Rodney of R&R Tackling Cigars. He will deliver premium handcrafted cigars from Cuba, Honduras, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic to your door. Brands include Oscar Valladares, Cohiba, Monte Cristo, Partagas and Romeo y Julieta. IF YOU LOVE great wine, make time to visit Les Grands Vins de France in South Hill. New visitors to this adored store are impressed to find such a wide selection of quality wines on island. The beautiful wine boutique is brimming with wines from all over the world and there are libations to suit every palate and pocket. They also stock
selected rums, whiskies and premium liquors.
Proprietor Nathalie Le Seneschal’s passion for wine is undeniable. Tell her what style of wines you enjoy and she will come up with some great recommendations. Nathalie loves to talk to other enthusiasts, hear your wine stories and will encourage you to explore and taste more.
CChristobel Daniel of Cari Bella says her mission is to formulate, create and provide healthy, natural skin and hair-care alternatives, as well as wellness products, to improve your skin and enhance holistic health. Shocked by the results of her research into mass-produced skin care products she decided to look into making her own and got a diploma in formulating natural skin-care products. She tested them on herself first and, when her husband noticed a difference, trialled in it on friends who loved the results and encouraged her to make the products available commercially. Signature products include an anti-ageing night cream and elixir.
Kendra Gajadhar of Bath House is on a mission to create Anguillian products that tantalise the senses while being aesthetically pleasing – using locally sourced, when possible, cruelty-free and natural ingredients. One of her bestselling items is a candle set in a coconut shell – a pretty gift which is available in many scents – including sea salt blossom, lemon mint leaf and basil sage. We also love her natural
aloe products (harvested from her garden) and coffee, eucalyptus and tea tree-enhanced Anguilla salt scrubs.
You can now get your wonderful Jepun Bali Massage three ways, in the east at Shoal Bay Villas, at their new centre in South Hill or in the comfort of your own accommodation. Dek Nur has worked in Anguilla for nearly 20 years and she and her team are well known for providing excellent and authentic Balinese massage – with wonderful service touches at a reasonable price. As one happy client said, ‘Dek Nur is simply the best. Outstanding, kind, professional – the list can go on and on.’
Joe Pradel aka La Severine also offers on-location massages and spa treatments, as well as personal training, coaching, stretching, strength training, boot camps and more.
TTHE LYNNE
BERNBAUM
ART Gallery in Sandy Ground is a jewel box of a space – cool and vibrant with so much variety to look at and enjoy. Lynne is an artist who likes to produce paintings in series and her current series borrows from an older and very popular one featuring Anguilla’s famous and beloved goats.
Inspired by a request from Rhona Richardson for nautical-themed paintings to complement her Villa Pastiche décor, 'Goats in Boats' was born. It features goats aboard iconic Anguillian racing boats. Of course, the series continues. And if you just can’t get enough goats, there are more joyful paintings to enjoy: 'Goats in
Mokes' inspired by the stylish colourful vehicles, and TRUE Anguilla’s personal favourite 'Le Goats Di Modigliani'.
Next door to Lynne you will find one of the two locations for Marie Albert Furniture. This charming emporium showcases some of their gorgeous furniture
and stylish accessories, as well as more touristic offerings like beach bags and straw hats. To see the full collection of all the things you need to furnish your dream Anguilla home, head to the impressive Marie Albert showroom in South Hill. Malliouhana Fest, organised and run by The Department of Youth and Culture (DYC) offers authentic experiences to residents and visitors alike through activities like Culture on the Road, National Culture and Arts Awards, Leh We Roam, Tranquil Jazz on the Lawn, The Art Walk, Storytelling Under the Stars and more! Everyone agrees – the one thing you simply MUST do when you visit Anguilla is to explore our pristine waters and offshore cays.
CALYPSO CHARTERS OFFER up a diverse portfolio of boats and excursions including trips to offshore cays and neighbouring islands. Guests love their comfortable boats and charming crew – especially their new sunseeker, Bikini, and catamaran, Ginger, on which a party of up to 20 can enjoy a leisurely day’s sail, sunset cruise or a full-on party in spacious comfort.
Dougie Carty of Special D Diving and Charters based in Sandy Ground offers diving for certified and non-certified persons, as well as snorkelling trips too.
The Anguilla Youth Sailing Association has an admi rable purpose – to keep the art of sailing alive so it can be passed on to further generations. The association gives sailing instruction to young Anguillians and will be offering sailing lessons to tourists also this season.
Over peak season we can enjoy the spectacle of visiting mega yachts anchoring offshore, coming to Anguilla to enjoy our off shore cays, relax at our world-class spas, dine and, of course, play golf on the best course in the region.
Anguilla EXPERIENCE
Endless Turquoise will take you on holiday from real life as you voyage to Zephyr, a Caribbean idyll, replete with stunning beaches, luxurious hotels and comic cultural exchanges.”
endless Turquoise
Written by: Shellecia Brooks Johnson Photography: J.Austin Proshe experienced undeniable love, peace and a sense of belonging. After meeting and forming an instant friendship with Sue and Allen at gorgeous Prickly Pear, Trudy genuinely understood and accepted that she would be returning and making Anguilla her forever home. Readers of Endless Turquoise may be able to identify these two scenic locations which had a huge impact on Trudy in the novel.
turquoiseKingdom, they grapple with what they need to do next, to live their best lives.
Trudy’s insider knowledge of life in the Caribbean and familiarity with different cultural and ethnic backgrounds make her books, realistic and satisfying for those familiar and unfamiliar with the Caribbean.
Trudy says, “Endless Turquoise is a love story, but it’s also a book about self-discovery and I’ve been gratified to receive lovely reviews from men and women, locals and tourists, who really wanted to know what happened next for the characters – so I’ve published a follow up called Deepest Aqua, and am planning a whole series!”
TTrudy Nixon’s love affair with the Caribbean is evident and captured effortlessly in her first novel Endless Turquoise. When she first set foot on Tobago in 1998, it was love at first sight for the region. A few years later, during a six-week tour of the Caribbean that included a trip on the Windjammer tall ship, Trudy encountered Anguilla. A decision to spend a week on the island that she loved most after her tour led her to a stay in the picturesque fishing village of Island Harbour, where Trudy hosts regular book signing events with complimentary rum punches, so make sure you join her mailing list and follow her on all social media channels so you don’t miss out!
An avid lover and traveller of the region, it was only natural that Trudy's debut novel should have as its backdrop an amalgamation of many Caribbean islands. Readers will be captivated by the intriguing plot lines, lyrical prose, diverse characters and the island vibe and energy. The page-turning story revolves around two very different women who independently travel to a (fictional) island in the Caribbean called Zephyr, where they have very different experiences. It recounts their island adventures and how, after they return to the United
Intrigued? Endless Turquoise and the follow up Deepest Aqua can be found in Anguilla at the Coral Reef Bookstore, Straw Hat, Les Grands Vins de France, Lynne Bernbaum Art Gallery, Wheat Boutique at Four Seasons and the Boutiques at Aurora or on Amazon worldwide.

Nestled in one of the world’s most romantic regions, Anguilla’s gorgeous properties, deserted beaches, fabulous cuisine and simple wedding license procedure make it the best choice for a destination wedding or special event of any size, budget or persuasion.
blair + dan
Carly Landolt @CarlylandoltphotoMMY FIRST VISIT to Anguilla was with my family in 2006, and I've been fortunate to visit a dozen times since. I fell in love with the island's beaches, food (Straw Hat’s seafood pasta!), rum punches and – most importantly – the people.
Dan and I started dating in 2016, and after years of hearing me gush over Anguilla, we went together for the first time in 2019. It was clear how quickly Dan shared my admiration for what a special place Anguilla is. A couple of days into our visit and after a great lunch (and Bushwackers!) at Tropical Sunset, we first
discussed the idea of spending the rest of our lives together and what a dream it would be to make that commitment to each other in Anguilla. In 2019, Dan proposed to me, and our dream wedding was set into motion with the help of the team at The Agency Anguilla! Following the global pandemic in 2020 and a difficult postponement in 2021, we finally experienced our dream wedding with our family and friends as we celebrated at Straw Hat on Meads Bay on May 28th, 2022.
blair's love letter
This is a love letter to Anguilla.
This is a love letter to her people.
This is a love letter to her 33 beautiful beaches, especially the ones I haven't seen.
This is a love letter to the sounds of the waves crashing when her sun wakes you at 5am and to the same waves when they mingle with calypso music a few hours later.
This is a love letter to my husband, to our family and to all our incredible, wonderful friends.
This is a love letter to shit gone wrong, and to happenstance, and absolutely everything made so perfectly right again.
This is a love letter to sleepless nights, and to worries and nerves and hard work and stress and patience and the support system that has carried us through and always will.
This is a love letter to rum punch, and dancing, and floating in the sea, and bougainvillea, and sunsets that embrace you with love from the ones who went before.
This is a love letter to my favorite people, in my favorite place on the best day of my life.
A very Caribbean reception! wedding
AANGUILLA BEACHES-THEMED TABLE décor and a barefoot reception – featuring dishes like seafood spring rolls, baconwrapped plantain skewers, Carib beer and, of course, rum punch! (If you plan to have your reception by a pool or by the beach, glass is not allowed.) Straw Hat recommend that parties bring their own branded cups, which can be recycled and taken home as souvenirs.
KEVIN ARCHIBALD OF KSharp Media thinks the reason why Anguilla is the perfect wedding destination is because ‘Anguilla is in the heart of the Caribbean. And because we are famous for our gorgeous beaches and picturesque scenes. We have many different services that are needed for weddings: photography, video, amazing venues, live entertainment, bands, great singers, hair and makeup artists, photobooths, professional event and wedding planners, florists, décor designers, and even dancers if you want them. You name it, Anguilla can provide you with whatever you need for your wedding or special event. And there are so many great spots in Anguilla to take photos and make videos.
You’ve heard it before and you will hear it again, what really makes Anguilla special is the people – and you can be sure that whoever you get to help you with your wedding they will make it an enjoyable and memorable experience.’

Love island life? Ready to the take the plunge and move to Anguilla? The following pages are designed to help you make that dream come true.
Brandon and Tonya Rhodes from Pennsylvania have been coming to Anguilla for 13 years. A chance meeting with Ian ‘Sugar George’ Edwards, who gave Brandon his card, told him Anguilla was special and encouraged him to try it out for his next Caribbean vacation – which led to Brandon booking Spyglass Hill Villa for Tonya’s birthday. They came and fell in love.
Brandon said when he first saw the breath taking views of the Caribbean Ocean from the
villa he felt like, ‘God has sent a gift to me’. Tonya felt immediately at home, loving Spyglass Hill’s design style and the ‘gorgeous’ courtyard. They began to explore the island and fell deeper in love, this time with the people, who they felt were service orientated and interacted with them ‘with so much dignity and respect’; and they also adored the natural state of the beaches and scenery. Each time they left the island they felt saddened.
Walking on one of their favourite beaches a few years ago, the two of them holding hands, Brandon turned to Tonya and said, ‘Let’s do this.’ Knowing just what he meant without him having to explain it further, she said, ‘Lets’. Perfectly in tune.
At that stage there was no plan. Just an understanding that they wer en’t ready to retire, and that Anguilla was where they wanted to come to live their dream. As Brandon had worked in fashion for 37 years (he was a buyer for Gianni Versace for a period of time) they decided to look into opening up a women’s clothing store. After taking some time to conduct research on island, picking the brains of their friend Janine Edwards, receiving advice, and ultimately setting up an Anguillian company through Counsel Limited and commissioning Orrett Wynter of Cabarita Agency to create their brand and website, LodeVole (which means praiseworthy in Italian) Boutique was born.
The stylish store opened in 2022, and the couple now live and work in Anguilla for most of the year. It’s a dream-team experience for a couple who have never worked together before but who both have a passion for fashion. See page 94 for information on the boutique.
Do business in anguilla
IF YOU ARE interested in doing business in or from Anguilla, have an exploratory conversation to discuss what the process is.
Counsel Limited have provided Corporate Services for over 20 years. The company started as an accountancy practice and moved to become corporate services as they are so intimately con nected. They also provide administrative support. If you need help getting business licences, knowing what taxes you need to pay, the Goods and Service Tax (GST), anything you need they can help you. Counsel pride themselves on providing interna tional levels of service with a friendly local face.
Managing Director, Fiona Curtis’s, door is always open (within working hours) and says, ‘If you are thinking about setting up a business in Anguilla, please just contact me, make an appoint ment, come in and have a coffee with me and we can chat about what you would like to get done.’
fiona’s top tip
I recommend forming a company to purchase your property. It means you are all set if you ever decide to rent the property out and its also helpful for estate planning purposes and asset protection.
Insuring your ANGUILLAfuture in
IIT’S ALL ABOUT the people you connect with along the way, and you will be happy to connect with with the following professionals
In Anguilla you will come face to face with your insurance broker and real estate agent on a regular basis, in the restau rants, on the beaches and often in the supermarket. All in all,
it is in everyone’s best interests to offer you the dream home or insurance solution you need.
Chantal Piazzi is the face of Island Insurance located in South Hill. You may also know her as the owner of Italian restaurant, Trattoria Tremonto. She explains that ‘Island Insurance Ltd. is an insurance agency, which is different from a broker. What this means is that we underwrite for one company, not many. We are agents for Caribbean Alliance Insurance Company Ltd. (CAIC). A very important fact to consider when choosing an insurance company is their financial standing. CAIC holds an AM Best Financial Strength Rating of A Excellent, the highest rating in the Caribbean.
Having insurance means that you are guaranteed compen sation for specified losses or damage. Anguilla, as well as other islands in the Caribbean due to our geographical location, is susceptible to significant damage in the event of an earthquake or hurricane, basically a catastrophic peril, which can affect our properties and infrastructure. Island Insurance stands by their promise to assist you every step of the way from a site visit of your property, to offering the best affordable rate; from walking you through each and every loss (and thus claim) to insuring a fair and satisfactory settlement.’
donald recommends
When you decide to buy a house on Anguilla you should ask your real estate agent the following questions:
1. What type of hurricane shutters are in place and how did they perform in a recent storm?
2. What type of doors and windows does the house have – are they hurricane rated?
3. Is the house built of concrete or wood? and;
4. How is the roof constructed? If it’s concrete find out how it’s been poured and if its Galvalume, how it’s tied on.
SANDRA LOVELL IS happy when she is called ‘the face of insurance’. The friendly and approachable director of Alliance Insurance says she doesn’t mind when she is stopped in the supermarket and asked about coverage! She just encourages persons to visit their office in Rock Farm and meet the five-person team to determine how Alliance Insurance can meet their needs.
Sandra’s top tip is to not only take insurance out on your building but also to ‘Insure your contents: most of our struc tures are concrete and are very strong, but water always seems to find a way in!’.
Donald Curtis, of Caribbean Insurance Solutions, located in the Valley, says, ‘Filing claims is the most rewarding part of the job. Making sure that people get what they need! I also like doing the sales side – in this society the world won’t go round without insur ance, banks require it, so if I can give them a product that they feel confident with, that I know will work, I feel rewarded.’
Alliance Insurance and Caribbean Insurance Solutions are brokers and, as such, able to place policies with a number of insurance companies.

AANGUILLA’S
REAL
ESTATE scene has been extremely busy for the last few years. Despite – or maybe because of – the global pandemic, more and more people are making the move to live permanently or stay for longer periods of time in Angilla. More direct flights into the island from mainland USA and the opportunity to take up a membership at the Aurora International Golf Club add to the lifestyle benefits, and this all makes island life even more desirable..
STEVE AND DEBBIE Haines of Trophy Properties Ltd. have been successfully selling real estate in Anguilla for nearly 20 years. Steve affirms, “Anguilla is a luxury destination with many Trophy Properties, and historically we have successfully represented sellers and buyers on many of the island’s finest properties; including the Santosha and Long Bay Villa Estates, the incredible beachfront Villa’s Arushi and Animos located within the Aurora Golf Resort’s beachfront neighborhood “Enclave” and most recently the Villa Paradise Estate.”
Steve has been involved in every property transaction at the Four Seasons Anguilla’s Private Residences from 20192022 and he goes onto say, “Trophy Properties is honored to be exclusive agent for the limited purchase opportunities available at the Four Seasons Private Residences. The residences that are currently available were among the very first selected from the original developer’s inventory and each one offers incredible views, smart layouts, and extraordinary furnishings. Prices range from $695,000 for an ocean view suite to $7,495,000 USD for a four-bedroom villa.”
ADRIAN KOBBE OF Gum/ko says, ‘Purchasing real estate in Anguilla is an investment in savoir-vivre. Then again, if you’re here, in all likelihood you already know that: the crisp, breezy air, alien to pollution; the balmy seawater – soft and invigorating; the simple privileges of a simple life: a good restaurant – no shortage of those on the island –freshly caught fish cooked to perfection and the right bottle of wine to go with dinner. A day in Anguilla is the stuff songs are made of, just a perfect day, which is why hardly anyone ever finds the heart to leave on day two. How long is long enough in paradise, though? The answer to that question is the clue that might guide you to our doorstep.’
Adrian, known as the ‘land merchant’ stresses there is still plenty of desirable land – seafront, beachfront and inland – available for purchase, ‘We continuously receive addi tional listings and can arrange viewings of particular parcels upon request.’
JACKIE PASCHER

She’s put together an e-book on how to buy, in which there is a step-by-step guide to everything you have to do. She did it because she found that some people are ‘a little overwhelmed by the differences in the process but it’s my job to show them how simple a process it is and to walk through it with them’.
LISA DELONG OF Tranquility Beach says that some of the reasons why buying a second home in Anguilla is so attractive is because ‘it’s backed by British resources. Anguilla is a country of laws with a stable economy, world-class telecom and easy access to goods and services. There is no income, inheritance or capital gains tax and property taxes are lower than international standards. Anguilla also offers a high value resident (HVR) programme for global citizens seeking optimised tax planning solutions and a Caribbean lifestyle’.
Happy purchasers say it’s because ‘the beach and property are MAGNIFICENT. The architecture and overall design and construction are all exceptional. To say we loved this property and the fantastic staff is an understatement. We have found our home away from home and cannot wait to come back!’
THE owner of Island Dream Properties in South Hill, wants to be your guide to buying in first thingELAINE HEARN OF Properties in Paradise in South Hill, says, ‘What I love about selling real estate in Anguilla is that it’s about matching people and properties. It’s really very personal. It’s about Anguilla – not just an investment. There is always a story and what we are trying to do is make their dreams come true.’
Elaine is very excited about a brand-new development called Morgan Hill, ‘It’s based in Long Bay and Properties in Paradise are the exclusive agents. It consists of four villas – two six-bedroom and two four-bedroom – all with sea views and direct access to Long Bay beach, and in phase two there will also be a few condos available for sale’.
ANOTHER INTERESTING NEW development to take note of is Kokoon Villas in the West End: stylish new-build villas with views to St Martin from experienced husband and wife team, Bonnie and Ira Bloom.
