How do you judge the caliber of a jeweler?

by the company he keeps...

The Big Four! Patek Philippe, a name synonymous with superlative watchmaking, was established in 1839. Among their distinguished clients have been Albert Einstein, Madame Marie Curie, Rudyard Kipling, Queen Victoria, Tchaikovsky... and a plethora of royalty, past and present. Patek Philippe is the undisputed king at watch auctions and holds more world records than all others combined! "You never actually own a Patek Philippe; you merely take care of it for the next generation."

Founded in 1775, the legendary watchmaker Breguet, is unrivaled in the realm of inventions the most famous being the magical tourbillon! Acknowledged by the cognoscenti as the greatest watchmaker of all time, Breguet’s client list is the most impressive of any watchmaker in the history of watchmaking; it includes the likes of Queen Marie-Antoinette, Emperor Napoleon, Sir Winston Churchill, Ettore Bugatti, George Washington, Tsar Alexander the list is endless...

Vacheron Constantin is the world’s oldest watch manufacturer, uninterrupted since 1755. This patriarch of legendary watchmaking has been the benchmark of ‘haute horlogerie’ and the finest craftsmanship for generations. Vacheron Constantin timepieces are the gift of choice by governments to mark momentous events in history to royalty, world leaders and celebrities. Their client list reads like the blue book of the greatest leaders of all time.

A. Lange & Söhne has been creating fine timepieces since 1845 and is the only non-Swiss watchmaker who commands a position at the pinnacle of watchmaking. The youngest of the “Big Four” has rightfully earned the reputation of “making the impossible, possible” among connoisseurs! A prodigious innovator, A. Lange & Söhne timepieces are highly sought-after by uncompromising aficionados. Every Lange watch is made to last a lifetime...

The Big Four are widely recognized as the greatest watchmakers of all time - often referred to as the ‘Four Pillars’ of fine watchmaking! In what is at once a tribute and a testimonial to their reputation, their unrivaled quality and their timeless value, virtually all the world records at auctions are held by the ‘Magnificent Four’ testifying that they are 'art', 'heirloom' and 'investment' all rolled in one. Not only are they easily portable and extremely 'liquid' investments but very discreetly 'under-the-radar' as well. A mere handful of jewelers in the entire world have the privilege of being invited by ALL of the BIG FOUR to showcase their collections under one roof. Jewels by Love has the unique privilege of being chosen and being honored with this distinction.

Our Anguilla holiday started the moment we stepped onto our Calypso speedboat transfer from St. Maarten airport. They handed us a rum punch, asked us to sit back and relax and the 20 minute journey went by in an enjoyable flash. We all agreed it was very James Bond! ANDREW FLEMING, LOUISE JORDAN AND NICK LAURENCE, London

We find travelling by air very convenient. It shortcuts any lines at the St. Maarten airport and the plane journey is pleasant and quick. The Anguilla Air Services’ pilots and ground crew are all excellent and very professional. We recommend this as an option for our visitors staying at our vacation villas. GETTING TO ANGUILLA JUST GOT BETTER One of the special things about Anguilla is that large aeroplanes don’t fly here – you have to transfer by smaller planes, speed-boats or ferry St. Maarten (SXM), Puerto Rico(SJU) or Antigua (ANU) three of the Caribbean’s bestserviced and most reasonable destinations to

to Anguilla without having to leave the airport. AAS staff say that on average, from stepping off your international flight to landing in Anguilla’s Clayton J Lloyd international airport, it takes 45 minutes (flying to Anguilla takes approximately 7 minutes). AAS runs 3 scheduled services a day in season, at times convenient to meeting the most popular flights, or you can charter the whole plane (maximum 9 passengers) for $480 one way.

VIP TRANSFERS --------------------Ask about charted services – if your party is 6 or more – you may find that a chartered transfer on either boat or plane not only makes you feel like a rock star, but is also financially astute! Transferring from Princess Juliana International Airport via a scheduled or charter boat service is easy, and there are lots of good providers to choose from. Arrive in Anguilla via speed-boat and let your vacation begin as soon as you step on-board! Simply call or go online and book your transfer with a company like Calypso Charters, Sea Pro Charters, or GB Express. Once you clear St. Maarten immigration and collect your bags you will be met in the arrival hall of the airport by a representative who will transfer you and your bags to the “Anguilla dock” just a few minutes away via taxi. As you are now leaving St. Maarten, you will clear customs and join your boat. About 18 minutes later you will arrive in Anguilla. If you are travelling in a large group we suggest you contact a destination management specialist such as Blue Sea Anguilla or Malliouhana Travel and Tours to coordinate the process.

FOR THOSE THAT love the ocean editor’s tip

LOCAL FERRY --------------------The ferries run all day between 7.30am and 6.15pm (departing Anguilla). The first ferry to Anguilla from St Martin departs at 8.15am and the last at 7.00pm. Ferries run approximately every 30 to 40 minutes, and the trip takes about 25 minutes and costs $20 plus taxes each way.

20

| 2015-2016

Jumping on the Local Ferry is a popular way to arrive, especially for those familiar with the island and/or interested in catching a glimpse of the French side of St. Martin [and real ‘travellers’]. Simply grab a taxi from Princess Juliana International Airport and ask for the Anguilla Ferry Port in Marigot – a 10 to 20 minute (depending on traffic) drive. The Anguilla ferries depart every 45 minutes.

Anguilla IN A day

It’s easy and fun to see Anguilla in a day. We ask an expert, resident Taxi Driver, Sheraul Gumbs, of M&S Exquisite Services, to give us his perfect tour of Anguilla.

1

I pick up my passengers and head to the western end of the island, where I give them a glimpse of our beautiful 5-star hotels. We drop them off at Meads Bay or Rendezvous Bay; sometimes they walk around on the beach and maybe stop for a drink at one of the hotels’ beach bars.

continued on page 24

2 Then I drive east, via Back Street and take in the view of Sandy Ground then into our Capital, The Valley, via the old Courthouse.

I love to give this tour; my guests see a lot and experience much of what Anguilla is about. Many say that although they had heard about Anguilla’s beaches they never really believed they would be as beautiful as they are. SHERAUL GUMBS, M&S Exquisite Services 22

DRIVE IT YOURSELF --------------------Car rental is reasonable and Anguilla is easy to navigate. Rent a car from an agent like Avis who will arrange your local driving license also.

Then on to world famous Shoal Bay East, where we stop at one of the beach bars so that my guests can enjoy some lunch, maybe a couple of rum punches and relax in the incredible waters for 2 or 3 hours.

5 Finally we pass by Island Harbour fishing village where we can stop and lime – watch the boats and fishermen from one of the beach bars – and then we loop back, through historic East End village where I can point out the Heritage Collection Museum and East End school, before heading ‘home’ to their transportation off island.

Everyone always talks of the beaches in Anguilla but, for me, it’s the people who make this place special. If for some cataclysmic design all the sand were drained out of Anguilla’s coastline I would still happily sit on White Hill, gnawing at a chicken leg, sipping my beer, having a laugh with a few friends. I guess that’s what they call home. MONTAGE KOBBÉ, Author, The Night of the Rambler and On the Way Back

Our beaches may attract visitors to Anguilla the first time, but our people are the number one reason they keep coming back. Meet some of our special people and hear why some of our favorite visitors love this special place.

enroy Herbert, Operations Manager at Ricketts Luxury, one of the island’s leading villa rental agencies, is determined to make the most of the opportunities living and working in one of the world’s most luxurious tourism destinations affords. “We have the perfect canvas for tourism – beautiful beaches, proximity to the USA and friendly people.” He knew from an early age that he wanted to get involved in hospitality, because he loved meeting and interacting with people – despite skepticism from friends and family who thought that he would have better job security working with the government. Inspiring lessons delivered by newly qualified Teacher, Sharon E Richardson (now Director of Hospitality Studies at the island’s Community College), instilled an abiding enthusiasm for “the business,” and lit even more of a fire under him.

After school this “rebel with straight A’s” toed the path of least resistance though, and took a job at the Government Water Laboratory – where he won scholarships and undertook placements in islands like Trinidad and St. Lucia. But job security was not enough, and the quiet routine of the lab felt like “putting a wet blanket over a fire,” and he handed in his notice only to be called the same day and offered a job at the Rum Factory, home of Anguilla’s Pyrat Rum. He landed a dream job – Quality Control Officer for the various rums and liqueurs that were blended and packaged at the Sandy Ground site, but sadly was still locked away in a lab. Until, one fortuitous day, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cosby came to the tasting room in search of their favourite rum liqueur; and as the regular staff member was not there, Kenroy stepped in and gave the presentation. Afterwards, his boss – who had watched the interaction between Kenroy and the famous couple – was so impressed, he

promoted him to Production Manager. Always looking to learn new things, a few years later Kenroy resigned and took a position at the then brand-new Greg Norman designed golf course as a caddy, because he loved to play golf and, most importantly, saw it as a great way to progress his career. Friends were puzzled over why he would leave a management position to “carry people’s bags,” but Kenroy knew he would cross paths with interesting and influential people associated with the development. He was right. During his time there he met, caddied for and played golf with numerous investors and tourism professionals, including tourism pioneer Robin Ricketts who, alongside his wife Sue, was instrumental in opening Malliouhana and Cap Juluca Hotels. A few months later, Kenroy began working with the couple. Today, Kenroy is Operations Manager of Ricketts Luxury, a job that sees him managing 13 beautiful properties and providing concierge services to an impressive list of tourists and VIP’s. Kenroy’s entrepreneurial fire has been well and truly flamed, and alongside his demanding job he has also launched two local businesses, one detailing cars (recently sold) and one cleaning homes. Breaking news for the 2016 season is that he is launching an exciting new tourism product, that encompasses not only Anguilla, but St. Barths and St. Martin. He and his wife Kirsten, who works in Anguilla’s financial services sector, hope to start a family soon. They are both active in the community, and Kenroy recently coordinated an island-wide cleanup campaign to great success. So what’s next for this young Anguillian entrepreneur? His dream is to develop his own small, luxury, boutique hotel. Watch this space – because when Kenroy sets his mind to something, it usually happens!

“The wealthy are getting younger and don’t want to be spectators. They don’t just want to lie on the beach; they want access to more active stuff as well. I want to see us providing new and engaging things to do for that crowd.” WHAT IS ONE OF THE MOST UNUSUAL REQUESTS YOU HAVE HAD?

“One Christmas, a family that stayed in one of our villas wanted to immerse themselves in our culture, and asked what we really eat for Xmas. So I told them; turkey and ham like you, but also goat meat... She’s like, “Ok, I want to try that, but I also want to see the goat being slaughtered.” She was a trouper! She came, she saw it and then their private chef cooked it for her. She loved the goat water so much she took it home on their private jet!” WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND PEOPLE “MUST DO” WHEN THEY VISIT?

“It depends who’s asking the questions! If they are younger I always say, “Anguilla is surrounded by water – definitely take a boat charter with Calypso or a tiger boat tour with Freedom Rentals to Little Bay and jump off the rock – a scary but amazing experience.” And if you want to try something local and you like barbeque, you’ve got to eat at either Ken’s in the Valley or by his brother ”Paper“ in East End on a Friday evening – which is a very good evening to experience our local culture.”

“  H

e’s the reason we came back to Anguilla,” said Lori and Anthony Giannico, the couple who came to say “hi” to singer/songwriter Omari Banks and his beautiful daughter Somaya during our cover shoot on Shoal Bay East. They had heard him perform on their first visit to the island and decided to return for the launch of his debut album, “Move On,” in 2013. It’s clear Omari has that effect on a lot of people. A former West Indian Cricket star, and son of the legendary musician Bankie Banks, Omari has generated a devoted

fan base of tourists and locals after performing in venues all over Anguilla. Judging by the response to his recent European Tour, with iconic reggae group Morgan Heritage, he will soon do the same internationally. We were lucky to catch him for our shoot a few weeks before he was due to go to Jamaica to record his second album – expected in early 2016. Catch a performance of Omari Banks and his band “Eleven” while you can, because although he continues to perform in Anguilla, he will be increasingly in demand around the world. Omari travels widely, and wherever he goes he is an ambassador for his island – originally as the first Anguillian to play for the West Indies cricket team, and now as a performer. He thinks Anguilla’s appeal to visitors is two-fold. First there’s the genuine friendliness visitors encounter, and secondly because “People come here and they don’t feel bothered, it’s not over populated or overcrowded, it’s peaceful.” You can buy Omari’s debut album, “Move On,” at most of the shops listed on pages 106 to 107 or find him on iTunes. If you would like updates and information about his upcoming album and tour schedule visit www.omaribanks.com.

why we love anguilla

people

We have visited at least 7 times and we have met some truly remarkable people on the island who we now consider family. We love everything about Anguilla from Craig, the captain who takes us over, to the beautiful Rendevous beach and water; the staff at CuisinArt and of course our dear friend Sean. Whenever you are visiting everyone treats you like family. It truly is our home away from home. THE MAHONEYS Anguilla’s soothing siren call of pristine beaches and easygoing people is hard to resist. It’s where the Caribbean seems to just pause and be exactly as it was meant to be for a moment… postcard perfect. And it’s so hard to leave. Each time I do, I swear I leave a little piece of me behind. SUE CAMPBELL, Caribbean Expert Travel Writer Follow Sue's travels on twitter @suectravel

Anguilla broke my heart wide open: water the color of tourmaline and the temperature of my own skin. Sand like flour between my toes. Gentle breezes like caresses. Beautiful and big-hearted people. I left the island feeling more tender, grateful and alive – and longing to return. KRISTA BREMER, Author, A Tender Struggle

The things I love about Anguilla are not necessarily tangible. I love the heaviness of the warm, salty air. I love the smiles and salutations of the people that only see me once or twice a year but act like no time has passed. I love the sound of rain against the corrugated metal roofs. I love the taste of conch soup at midnight at the bbq stand in Sandy Ground. I love beach combing for treasures at Savannah Bay. I love the sound of reggae music bellowing down the beach on Sunday afternoons. I love the smell of coconut tarts at Christmas time. I love the way rainbows always appear after afternoon squalls at Shoal Bay. I love that cheese sandwiches from Mary's Bakery still taste the same as they did when I was in school. I love my family, and my friends that are like family. I love Anguilla because no matter how much it changes and grows it always makes me feel the same. I love Anguilla because it's home. BREEZE TURNER, Realtor/Paddleboarder, Reno, NV

We loved our visit to the Heritage Collection and meeting Colville Petty. It is a well curated Museum that is a mix of historic and personal objects. Profound. Our neighbour built the lighthouse on Sombrero Island and it is fascinating to see that in here. This is not a dry museum, it’s a living museum, and there is something of interest for all ages. beaches Meads Bay beach is by far one of my favourite beaches. The beautiful, jewel-like turquoise water with soft white sand that seems to stretch for miles. The water is always just right and you can swim out for some distance and still stand up. It is a great beach for taking a walk especially at sunset, which is so amazing. And I also love the array of restaurants, each offering a unique dining experience, and their own fantastic view of this great beach! HEATHER WALLACE, Rock Farm, Anguilla

beaches Favorite beach? That’s like asking a mother to choose her favorite child! Anguillan beaches all have their own unique personalities but my favorite “all around” beach is, without a doubt, Maundays Bay. Home to Anguilla’s whitewashed Cap Juluca resort, its stunning turquoise water is nearly always pleasantly swimmable, even when the water at other beaches isn't. This crescent of white sand is long enough to get in a good walk and if you’re in the mood to go further, you can tack on another mile over on neighboring Cove Bay. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with just lounging in the shade beneath Maundays’ seagrape trees, either! ERICA PAGLIUCO 38

Because owners John and Melody Dill are widely travelled Anguilla enthusiasts who have used their experiences to make sure this beautiful private villa gets everything right for every visitor. With its fabulous interiors, unique art collection, incredible views and picturesque path – to what feels like a private beach – this is an amazing sanctuary.

What’s not to enjoy about eating out in Anguilla? I love to eat with my eyes first, and to gaze at some of the masterpieces I have seen created almost makes it feel sacrilegious to destroy that beautiful image by cutting into it with a knife and fork! There is a restaurant to accommodate every type of pocket, so you don’t have to feel you are going to break the bank to indulge in great food. Throw in the social element, the warm ambience and great customer service, and the scene is set for a magnificent dining experience! SHARON E. RICHARDSON, Director of Hospitality, Anguilla Community College

Breakfast, lunch, dinner and into the wee small hours you will find an incredible range of delicious dining for such a tiny island. Join in with our unofficial national sport – eating out! And don’t forget your dancing shoes – because in Anguilla, good food often comes with a side helping of musical entertainment!

eat out Blue at Cap Juluca, will make you feel anything but. This gorgeous beach front restaurant is filled with light and colour and will start your day off right. Non-resident guests are welcome.

BEST breakfast What better way to start your day than breakfast overlooking pristine Meads Bay, enjoying coffee refills or coconut water smoothies served by the friendly staff at the famous Straw Hat restaurant? This Anguilla institution may well be written up in Food & Wine magazine for its fine dining, but it also gets its eggsover-easy just right. Eat well, then retire to their complimentary beach loungers for a postbreakfast snooze, then walk the bay and work up an appetite for lunch a few hours later – their lunchtime burger, salad and sandwich selection is an excellent value as well. 68

The view of Meads Bay from Malliouhana’s beautiful restaurant is quite simply spectacular, especially when the mega yachts are visiting. The menu showcases a variety of fresh, sea-to-table offerings inspired by Mediterranean cuisine, and is one of our top picks for a lengthy and luxurious lunch (or dinner). The exquisite design of this luxurious boutique hotel makes you want to stay all day – so why not extend into evening cocktails? Their stylish bar is famous for incredible sunsets and the Haitian art that lines the walls.

LONG lunch One of the island’s most relaxing lunches can be had at Trattoria Tramonto on peaceful Shoal Bay West. During the day, the authentic North Italian menu includes favourites like homemade pastas, pizzas, salads and fresh fish. In the evening, items like their signature “Lobster-Filled Ravioli with a Cream of White Truffle Sauce” kicks it up a notch. Lunch patrons can enjoy comfortable, complimentary sun loungers on a firstcome-first-served basis, and you can dine in the restaurant, in the bar or in the beach “hut.” Come early, leave late and make sure you spend some time with Johnny, the friendly face of Trattoria’s cute beach bar. 70

E’s Oven is deservedly popular with locals and tourists alike, and is open for lunch and dinner. Don’t let its roadside location in South Hill mislead you into thinking this spot serves simple food; Chef Vernon Hughes re-invents his menu every season and serves fine Caribbean food with a French flair. Friendly service and daily specials (often featuring local fish) make this a must-try if you are “feeling for” Anguillian cuisine.

The first question people ask when they are considering Anguilla as a destination for a corporate event or destination wedding is ‘will there be enough for our guests to do beyond the beaches and restaurants?’ And we say ‘Don’t worry, there’s plenty!’ Recently, for one large group, we sent some guests on an ATV ‘off-road’ tour of the island, another set on a snorkelling trip to Little Bay on Calypso, and the rest were split between spa sessions, cookery classes and golf lessons! We could offer something for everyone, and hearing them all talking about their different adventures when they got ‘home’ to the hotel was a blast. our art is everywhere in the Caribbean!” is often the first comment of visitors to Lynne Bernbaum’s eponymous Art Gallery in Sandy Ground. Others announce “I’m here for the “Goats”, her iconic island painting series that strikes a chord with many who love our plentiful goat population. But Lynne’s gallery offers much more than goats – charming as they are. You will find her playful “Domino” compositions, engaging “Caribbean Market” scenes, bold geometric “Abstracts” and her most recent animated “Straw Hat” series, (also featured at Straw Hat Restaurant), alongside the ethereal and evocative work of Nathalie Lépine. A long time admirer of her work, Lynne invited Nathalie, who lives on St Martin, to be a visiting artist. Nathalie’s luminescent www.trueanguilla.com

paintings invite the viewer to lose themselves in the deep, emotion filled eyes of her hallmark work – “Faces” – or to ponder the message of her solitary “Lighthouses” or recent “Moonscapes” where the artist captures the magical play of light when the moon meets the Caribbean sea. The artists are keen to promote the idea that the Caribbean has much more to offer than its undoubtedly beautiful beaches, and their work can be found in collections all over the world. Both Bernbaum and Lépine exhibit internationally, and of course, international collectors come to our island. On a recent visit to Anguilla, actor Robert Downey, Jr. visited Lynne’s gallery and purchased 8 pieces of her work, including one of her beloved dog, Patois.

go. see. do Situated on the island’s majestic north coast, close to Àni Villas, you will find a fascinating art studio, filled with the Caribbean’s next generation of Michelangelos. Àni Art Academies is a not-for-profit facility that teaches Anguillian youths an incredible photo-realism painting system, developed by artist Anthony J. Waichulis, which not only teaches them to paint and draw with incredible accuracy, but also instills life qualities like discipline, patience and attention to detail. Book a tour with the resident Tutor and you can meet the students, learn about the technique, and if you like what you see, buy a painting or drawing – although there is no obligation to do so. There are Àni Art Academies in the Dominican Republic and Thailand, and the Àni team will soon be opening Àni Art Academies America in New Jersey, where the apprentices will be disabled veterans. The facilities are funded by the owner of Àni Villas, and patron of the arts, Timothy Reynolds. Please see page 108 for details on opening hours.

artful PURSUITS Jo-Anne Mason is the local artist/ storyteller/illustrator of the colourful children’s book series, Caribbean Tales, which includes the perennial favourite “Paddy the Goat that Saved Anguilla.” In her newest book “The Short Tale of the Long Dog,” Duty, the “long dog” sails to the Caribbean in search of adventure after meeting Captain Harrigan in Galway, Ireland. After delivering its cargo to Montserrat the ship sails to other ports, gets into big trouble, and finally ends up marooned on a Caribbean island. Jo-Anne has based the title character on Bruno, her own Anguillian “long dog” – the nickname used to describe the short-legged, longbodied “no brand” doggies that abound in Anguilla.

If you enjoy a glass of wine or champagne, or are simply looking for a unique shopping experience, we recommend you “take a pass” by Les Grands Vins de France, or as it is better known locally – “Nathalie’s wine shop.” Nathalie or Donnette will be happy to share their expert knowledge on what to drink with what local dish, and assist with which wines work well and why in our Caribbean climate. Don’t be mislead by the name, the shop sells a huge selection of not only French wines, but also leading wines from all over the world. Pop in to their attractive South Hill Boutique and you may be lucky enough to arrive during an impromptu tasting session. And if you are on island on Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve – be sure to pass by for a glass of champagne – a long standing tradition at the shop.

The Anguilla National Trust is the custodian of Anguilla's natural, cultural, and historic heritage. They run a number of great activities for members and visiting tourists, including hikes and tours to historical places such as the island’s first school in East End Village, and the Amerindian site Big Spring – home to over 100 petroglyphs – in Island Harbour. If you would like to make an investment in “Preservation for Generations,” consider becoming a member of the Anguilla National Trust.

The Anguilla Tennis Academy has been “Shaping Lives and Building a Future” since 1996, and this powerhouse organisation has taught hundreds of local children to play tennis, resulting in many scholarships and beneficial cultural exchanges. liming Anguilla’s Summer Festival, also known as “Carnival,” takes place annually over the first 10 days of August, and there are pageant shows, boat races and multiple activities scheduled every day – that’s a lot of liming! So, if you can only try a few activities, what do you choose? We ask Shayne Thompson of Blue Sea Anguilla, member of the Anguilla Summer Festival team and passionate Carnival enthusiast, to talk about some of his highlights and how to get involved and get the most out of them.

PHOTO Š JOSVEEK HULIGAR / ANGUILLA ACCESS

Carnival is a time of celebration for our island. As we party and have a great time, it really sends a message of our freedom as a people. It is a part of our culture that we embrace passionately, and we are very happy to share it with anyone that chooses to embrace it. Come and visit with us at Carnival, I know you will love it. PARADE OF Troupes

A colourful parade that is great for all the family. My top tip is to participate! Get in costume and join a troupe – don’t just stand on the sidelines. Those that do have a great time, and although the next day you may be sore and tired, you will have had an incredible experience and great memories. All ages can give it a try, in fact one of the fastest growing troupes is “Classic Old Timers,” who make all their costumes on island. SHAYNE THOMPSON

TAKE THE SHOW ON THE ROAD --------------------Parade of Troupes takes place in The Valley, from lunchtime into early evening on August Friday. If you would like to join a troupe, contact Shayne at Blue Sea Anguilla (see page 25) and he will be happy to help you. If you don’t fancy wearing a sparkly costume, and just want to watch, we suggest you find yourself a shady spot, grab a cold drink and enjoy the colourful parade as it passes by!

BAND

Clash

An evening event where the local bands get a chance to show what they can really do – by showcasing their music, creativity and performance skills. There are two parts – “Bandorama,” where they show their musicianship by performing a test song, and the “Band Clash,” where they play a selection of their own songs and are judged on performance and crowd participation. The venue is packed with literally thousands of fans, and they go all out for “their band.” The energy is amazing. My recommendation is to come from beginning to end, it is a long show, but you need to see all the performers. SHAYNE THOMPSON

J 'Ouvert

Should not be missed; it is a celebration of our emancipation from slavery and that is something all the Caribbean islands take seriously. I recommend you participate and drink loads of rum! I love it because you are free to dance and dress as you want – cover yourself with paint, powder or water. Dance in the street until it’s time to jump in the sea to cool off. If you’ve never done it (J’ouvert), I suggest you feel it out. See what you think you can handle and what you can’t. It’s a long journey, and you don’t have to do all of it – just make sure you do some of it.” SHAYNE THOMPSON

TAKE THE SHOW ON THE ROAD --------------------J’Ouvert takes place in the early hours of “August Monday,” which is always the first Monday in August! Thousands of revellers dance and party behind their favourite bands, who play very loud “road march” music from The Valley to Sandy Ground, and often get sprayed by water or paint! The August Monday beach party takes place on Sandy Ground beach after J’ouvert and some people will party for the whole day straight!

PLANNING MAKES FOR

perfect parties

If you want to hold your wedding or celebratory event in Anguilla, our top tip is to invest in a trip to the island (treat yourself!) specifically to plan. That way, on the day, and in the all-important run up to the event, it’s all covered, and you can relax and enjoy your “once in a lifetime” with friends and family to the full. Come for a few days (your potential venue will give you a good rate)

and meet with and interview a local wedding planner, like Ernie from Couture Concepts, or the events team at the resort, villa or venue you are considering using. Talk to them about dining, flowers, décor, music, DJ's, timing and types of ceremony. Explain your vision, but use their expertise – let them suggest some ideas on what works well in the Caribbean – be it on the

beach, on a boat or by the pool. Sample some restaurants. Meet with local photographers, like Derrys Richardson, Susan Croft, or Kevin Archibald and videographers like Rickeill Hodge, and check out their exceptional work. Visit the gift shops and choose local gifts for welcome bags. Try out potential group activities, like a boat trip to an off-shore cay.

Your celebration is likely the biggest event you’ve ever planned, and getting your people to a tiny Caribbean island may seem a little daunting – but it isn’t. Wedding planner Amelia, from Blue Sea Anguilla, is part of a team of destination specialists – so not only can you get your wedding arranged, but they can also advise on getting here and arranging individual and group transfers for your VIP’s. They can also handle transportation for your guests once on island – including putting together a programme of activities like boat trips, beach parties and “dine arounds.” And for those who can’t make it – Anguilla Access offers a live wedding streaming service so your ceremony can be shared with friends and family off-island.

i do A growing trend is for people who get married in Anguilla to return for vow renewal or commitment ceremonies with their children, creating memories for generations.

happy ever after Bart and I were married at St. Gerard's Catholic Church by Father Ed Herberger 10 years ago, surrounded by 75 guests travelling from both America and Holland‌ Ten years later Bart and I renewed our wedding vows at St. Gerard's Catholic Church, this time with our three beautiful children in tow, Carolyne (9), Julianna (7) and Lauren (4). I had always told them they were at our wedding as a twinkle in my eye, and this time the twinkle in my eye was blurred with the tears of happiness that my husband wiped away watching Lauren as my flower girl, and Carolyne and Julianna reading the first and second readings. My parents, siblings and 50 other friends and family joined us from America as well as from our beloved Anguilla‌ Hope to return to Anguilla not in another 10 years; I'm holding out for every year, it's that magical. It is truly a healing island of bliss to fill your soul. Anguilla is not just a wedding destination, it is a life changer. ANNE AND BART VAN DEVENTER

NEED TO KNOW --------------------It’s easy to get married in Anguilla! It only takes two days from your arrival and presentation of documents to process your license, and then you can marry as soon as and wherever you want – on the beach, at your hotel or villa, at a restaurant; in a church, on an off-shore cay or even on a boat! The simple and inexpensive requirements – which include paying stamp duties and marriage license fee ($280 approx) – will be handled by your planner or resort. If either party has been married before, don’t forget to bring your original divorce decrees (translated and notarized if the original version is not in English).

live the dream

If you dream of lingering longer in Anguilla this section provides information on how to build or buy your island home. We also talk to two families whose vacations to Anguilla, led them to a lifestyle change, that now sees them living here permanently. And, in our “Better for Business” article, we offer you an introduction to Anguilla’s thriving financial services industry.

ANGUILLA'S PERMANENT

J

ackie Cestero is a wildlife photographer and birder who has turned her passion into an Anguilla business. Nature Explorers Anguilla offers an array of wildlife and historical tours for all ages. They are not only wonderful for “twitchers”/bird watchers and nature lovers, but also any visitor wanting to know more about the culture of Anguilla. Jackie and her husband Rafael, originally from Rochester, NY, first visited Anguilla in 1984. Prior to that, they had explored plenty of other Caribbean destinations. But during that trip they fell in love with the island and vowed to make it their home. An annual vacation rapidly evolved into multiple trips a year, until they purchased land and built a house overlooking Shoal Bay East. They moved to Anguilla permanently in 1998. During those vacationing years, Jackie

encouraged many of her friends and family to join them in their Anguilla adventures. She fondly remembers a time when her family and closest friends rented all of Shoal Bay Villas for two weeks. This opportunity to share the island created many happy memories and built enduring friendships. After many years of vacationing here, Jackie’s niece Molly cultivated a soft spot for Anguilla in her heart as well. Now, in a sweet turn of events, Molly and her husband Tommy have also relocated here from Rochester, NY. Together, the three have launched Anguilla’s Jammin’, a delicious range of locally produced jams. They have also built the first aquaponic garden on Anguilla to support their business. They look forward to sharing this innovative growing method with local farmers to help increase agricultural production island-wide. Even with this new venture, Jackie continues to photograph, monitor and protect Anguilla’s environment. She shares this little known jewel with passion and enthusiasm. “There is a natural calendar that is endlessly fascinating, of which I never tire. The spring and fall migrations bring a variety of species as they make their way to and from breeding grounds in the north. Overwintering birds like waterfowl feed and nest on our wetlands. Further, from April through late August, Anguilla experiences the peak nesting season for sea birds. Annually, in excess of 300 pairs of Least Terns arrive on Anguilla. On the offshore cay of Dog Island, over 113,000 pairs of Sooty Terns nest and raise their young. It’s an incredible and significant experience.”

arren and Alicia Banks first came to Anguilla in 2004 to visit friends Chloé and Theron Loizos, shortly after the young couple set up their popular Picante Restaurant. The Banks liked the island so much, they came back in July 2005 to get married in a beautiful beach ceremony on Rendezvous Bay, followed by a reception in Sandy Ground – and then came back the following year to celebrate their 1st year anniversary! In 2013 the couple, who met working in a café in Marin County, decided they would like to quit their respective careers of publishing and being a stay-at-home mom to create

a venture together. They initially planned to open a restaurant in California, but that summer, when they learned SandBar was on the market, they made a quick decision to move to an island they loved, and create a lifestyle that would enable them to spend more time together as a family. Now in their third season as restaurateurs, they employ a staff of 12, and have garnered rave reviews. Darren and Alicia are a joint creative force behind the revamped menu; taking great pleasure in developing dishes and thinking up new specials. During service, Darren runs the kitchen and Alicia runs the front of the house. Unsurprisingly, both have made lots of friends in the community. Their pleasure in their new endeavour and Anguilla lifestyle is evident. ”We are happy we made the move to Anguilla because it's great to challenge ourselves. It takes a lot to move away from what you know. Together we get to do what we love in paradise.“ 2015-2016

TURN YOUR ANGUILLA

dream INTO A reality

The professional Real Estate Agents listed in this section will be happy to help with any of the following options:

PURCHASING IN A RESORT DEVELOPMENT

BUYING LAND AND BUILDING Anguilla is still relatively undeveloped, and there is plenty of land available for purchase. Our real estate agents will be happy to show you both land and built property depending on your brief. Reputable building contractors such as ORB Construction have the skills and expertise to turn your dream into a reality. They will provide realistic timetables and work collaboratively with your architects and project managers to produce exquisite homes such as Neveah, pictured here.

This is a popular choice for those looking for a “turn-key” solution. Buying into a carefully planned, organized and managed resort complex operated by an internationally experienced and reputable resort operator – such as the new Zemi Beach House on Shoal Bay East – is an inviting option.

BUYING AN EXISTING PIECE OF REAL ESTATE

For those looking at more intimate communities, the oceanfront villas at Solaire and new condo developments in the West End of Anguilla by luxury developer Sunset Homes will be very attractive.

There is plenty of “built” property currently available in Anguilla – to suit most price points. Some properties are brand new, and ready to move into, others need remodelling and updating. You may find that older properties occupy some of the most popular locations. There are a number of contractors, such as Leeward Construction and Linkus who are experienced in upgrading older properties.

hen you think of Anguilla, what do you think of? 33 white sandy beaches and turquoise waters, great food and friendly people? But that is not all that Anguilla offers. The financial services industry is a significant contributor to the country’s economy. Anguilla's zero-tax environment is an especially attractive component of its appeal and, coupled with its reputation as a well-regulated jurisdiction, marks it out as an enlightened financial services centre. Anguilla is now known globally for its excellent legislation, regulation and service providers, especially in the areas of Company Formation and Management, Trusts, Mutual Funds, Foundations and Captive Insurance. The public and private sectors’ combined efforts to market Anguilla as a financial services centre, the push to improve and

We are a well-regulated jurisdiction with a modern suite of financial services legislation, a smooth online company incorporations procedure via ACORN (the Companies Registry’s on-line system, the first of its kind in the world) and a developing body of sophisticated professional service providers with client satisfaction at the heart of all they do. Anguilla is still experiencing a Buyer’s market and there is a large inventory of villas for sale as well as plenty of undeveloped land. Prices are the lowest since 2004 and it is expected that this Buyers’ Market will continue for the year. Sales are generally of existing villas versus undeveloped land, however, foreign investors are now returning to the island and showing renewed interest in developments. JACKIE PASCHER, Island Dream Properties

editor’s tip

BUYING PROPERTY: THE BASIC PROCESS ------------------------------• Make your offer and deposit funds through your real estate professional, who will guide you through the process. Your chosen lawyer will draw up a “Purchase & Sales Agreement,” which outlines the stipulations of sale. • Apply for an Alien Land Holding License (ALHL) and attend an interview with the Government of Anguilla. • Once ALHL is approved, land/property closing can take place and property is transferred into purchaser’s name (at the Department of Lands and Surveys). ------------------------PLEASE NOTE The above information is a general guideline. For detailed and accurate information for each different type of purchase, contact one of the professionals listed on page 144.

We have recently seen an obvious upswing in Caribbean real estate sales; Anguilla generally follows on with the trends of the larger islands, so we are expecting the 2016/17 season to see some exciting activity. There are still some great bargains on-island but I don’t think I will be saying the same this time next year. My tip: Buy beachfront or with beach access if you can. ELAINE HEARN, Properties in Paradise

We are very excited to open our doors to guests this year. Zemi Beach House is the first boutique resort with this level of service and amenities to open in Anguilla for many years, indicating in the island. Anguilla remains an exclusive island that benefits from many repeat guests. Buying into a boutique resort complex that is marketed and managed by an internationally experienced team is very attractive to clients who do not want to stay on-island permanently. Turn-key ownership means a full resort staff looking after your property, and access to services such as kids’ clubs and the resort’s concierge to organize private chef catering and day trips to St. Barths. There are also restaurants, a fitness center, world-class spa and many other activities at your doorstep. LISA BASIRE, Zemi Beach House Resort & Spa 142
