our team UK-native Trudy has lived and worked in Anguilla for 10 years. A previous Executive Director of the Anguilla Hotel and Tourism Association (AHTA), she now runs True Communications, a PR and Marketing Consultancy. “I first came to Anguilla in 2001, fell in love with the island and plotted my return single-mindedly until my persistence paid off and I landed a job and ultimately moved to live and work here. I’ve held onto my ‘inner tourist’ and enjoy the many pleasures Island life has to offer. My idea for True Anguilla was simply to write about the things that made this tourist fall in love with Anguilla and its people.”

A passing remark by a long-time friend about the beautiful villas in Anguilla led Jamaica-born Orrett Wynter to launch Design Anguilla Magazine in August 2012. The magazine, a quarterly publication, and the island’s first dedicated to architecture, interior design and visual arts is a project for him to explore his passion for design in all forms. Slowly discovering his inner-tourist, Orrett has loved the opportunity provided by True Anguilla to explore the island and enjoy the relaxed lifestyle that Anguilla offers.

hen you ask visitors (and we do, often) what keeps them coming back to Anguilla, they
want to get a quick fix of our island’s many delights, where to stay, how to enjoy a day off the beach, which activities there are to do once you’re here, what festivals and events you should plan to come back for, and of course, practical information about getting married, or even coming to live here. getting to anguilla info “It’s fun and easy to pop over to Anguilla for the day on the ferry. Normally I have a round of golf – then afterwards have time to meet up with friends for lunch – often at Straw Hat on Meads Bay- before coming home.”
“There are no direct flights to Anguilla from the U.K. and Europe, but there are international flights into Antigua and St Maarten. Onward connections from Antigua are with inter islands carrier LIAT and Anguilla’s excellent charter operators who offer firstclass, one-to-one service for visitors. From St Maarten, there is option of a brief flight or a charter boat from the airport dock; or local ferry from Marigot which takes about 15 minutes. There is also the option of connecting through Puerto Rico from USA gateways.”

“Getting to Anguilla is part of the adventure! The last time I visited, I flew from New York into St Maarten and had a comfortable transfer on GB Express—they had a rep meet me at the airport and escort me to the boat. The journey was very quick, I had great views of Simpson Bay lagoon and was offered cold drinks. On the way home, I decided to fly with Anguilla Air Services—it was fabulous. Inexpensive, really quick and I went straight through customs into the departure lounge without having to go into the airport.”

editors’ tip Taxis are available at both Air and Seaports. All are registered, and the rates are set, so you can check your fare with the dispatcher. It is also easy to hire a car, and Anguilla is enjoyable to drive around. You will need to purchase an Anguillian Drivers License for $20. A hire car company such as Triple K Rentals (see page 27) or M&S Services (see page 26) can arrange this for you. Anguilla does not have a public bus service.

A
British Accent rmel Harrigan is famous. She has fans all over the world and regularly receives invitations to vacation in America and Europe. She’s spent a week with Jay-Z and Beyonce. She’s been handed the keys to a car—free. People have sent her children everything from Ninja Turtle Backpacks to iPads.
That girl with the
Someone sent her a foot brace because he or she “didn’t want her feet to hurt.” But what is Armel famous for? Is she a TV or Radio personality? A writer? A famous singer? No. Armel Harrigan is a waitress at Meads Bay’s popular Straw Hat Restaurant—a very good waitress who’s worked in some of Anguilla’s most popular tourism establishments and who has created a fan base aspiring pop stars would envy. People tell us that ‘the people’ are the reason they keep coming back to Anguilla, and Armel is definitely one of those ‘people’. Born and brought up in the UK, she came ‘home’ to Anguilla when she was 21 to work at the recently opened Malliouhana Hotel. She moved on to one of Anguilla’s first restaurants, the Fish Trap in Island Harbour, and she was subsequently poached by friends Tom and Julie to work at Arlo’s until Hurricane Luis wiped it out in 1995. Armel stays close with her friends from those early days, including Bryce and Nancy Bugg, who have supplied her with a most essential and intimate item ever since they met: “I haven’t had to buy a bra for 30 years,” Armel says, ”not that you can find a 44DD Bra in Anguilla.” We talked about the friends she made over the years. “I have so many stories... so many friends, I can’t mention them all, but I’ve met some dear, dear people…. when

I’m on vacation, I will meet up and stay with them or go to dinner. When my mother was sick, friends helped me get back to the UK. I’ve never asked, but people are so generous—they bring me gifts and stuff for my kids, and people come back every year to Anguilla, sometimes just to see me. My friend Mary Stevens says a year without Anguilla and Armel is like a year without sunshine.” Armel spent 7 years at Ripples Restaurant, crediting owner Jacquie Ruan with turning her into “a proper waitress” before moving to Straw Hat, where she’s been since it opened 16 years ago. Peter Parles, who co-owns the place with his wife Anne, tells us, “Most people love her and can’t get enough of that British accent.” When he first approached Armel about joining them, she apparently drawled, “Oh, darling… you can’t afford me!” We assume he must have come up with the money, because that same British accent still lilts through their daily specials! One guest once said, “Woman, you make that food sound so seductive, I want to try all of it.” Armel clearly loves what she does. Warm, unique, opinionated, and flamboyant, she offers advice, greets guests as “Darling”, and calls colleagues her “Straw-Hat Family”. After 30 years of working in tourism, she is an expert on Anguilla and the experience visitors have here. Finally, we asked her, “What makes Anguilla a special destination?” “The way people treat you. You’re not an anonymous tourist: you’re a person...you will be remembered when you return.”
Armel’s Rent a car! Explore— but when driving, I always say, “Stay on the same side as your steering wheel!”

ANGUILLA CULTURE Make sure you visit Colville Petty’s Heritage Collection Museum in East End. It won’t disappoint. Watch a boat race. Get on a motorboat and follow the action—I am a die-hard UFO fan. Oh, and make sure you come back for Carnival (the first 10 days of August) and Festival del Mar (Easter Saturday and Sunday).
LIMING SPOTS I really enjoy going to Da Vida in Crocus Bay and listening to Banko (Omari Banks and his 11 Band), who play there every Sunday, lunchtime. I also like Timmy’s place (On da Rocks) in Island Harbour and Bankie’s (The Dune Preserve) , but call first to check it’s open.
e’S oVEN I really love Vernon’s food at E’s Oven. He cooks with a lot of love. I especially like the Goat Curry In the little ceramic pot. I also adore Roy’s Roast Beef on a Sunday!

why we love anguilla people “I was drawn to Anguilla by its beautiful beaches - I kept returning because I loved the peace and quiet, the friendly people and wonderful restaurants. I have been all over the world and nothing has compared. There’s no one person or place, it is a culmination of everything: the beaches, the people who stop to chat on their morning walk, the restaurant and store owners who remember us, and the bands who acknowledge our presence when we walk in. I guess it is the feeling of belonging. We can hardly wait to get there and never want to leave.”
Ellen Garland, Anguilla Visitor and TripAdvisor Destination Expert
“When you visit Anguilla, you are not visiting a resort: you are visiting an island. Don’t miss the best part... go out and explore!”
“I was born in mid-August, just after the peak of the Anguilla boat racing season. No surprise then that I love the sea. One of the best ways to enjoy Anguilla is by boat. Boating gives a perspective of the island you can’t capture from shore. A boating excursion can include snorkeling, swimming, private sunbathing, and even sports fishing. You can lunch at the cays’ restaurants, visit St Barth’s for a Caribbean Riviera experience; explore St. Martin’s coastline in the daytime and enjoy its nightlife in the evening. The colour blue is born here; each sunrise brings a new aquamarine or turquoise or teal. Come boating in Anguilla and find your shade of heaven.”

“My favourite thing about Anguilla is that it is untouched. It allows for a very relaxed atmosphere that matches my personality perfectly. It’s the best place to leave all your stress and to enjoy doing nothing. I really enjoy the sports and recreation. This little island breeds athletic talent. It’s very easy to get involved and participate just for fun or exercise. I cannot forget our beautiful beaches. Fun fact: We are 35 square miles and have 33 beaches, imagine that! Shoal Bay is probably the most popular, however, all of the beaches are worth visiting, even just to sit and listen to the waves. It’s worth it! Finally, you have to try our delicious cuisine. Our people are dedicated to great eating. From local BBQ to haute cuisine, almost all Anguillian restaurants are bound to please. After all, we have to keep people like Ellen Degeneres and Denzel Washington coming back right?”
“I’m from Sandy Ground and I love it here. It’s grown from a quiet fishing village and small Caribbean port, into a dynamic hub of activity. Once, large coconut trees lined the sand road on the sandbar separating the salt pond from the bay, and the only sound at night was crickets. Now, Sandy Ground is home to art galleries, boutiques, a wide variety of restaurants and the best nightlife in Anguilla. Our best kept secret is probably our beautiful half mile long, white sand beach which, while left mainly to itself during most of the year, hosts the largest annual beach party in the Caribbean on the first Monday of every August! For me, Sandy Ground holds the pulse of Anguilla, and I love being in the heart of it.”

“Go down a little road, find a small store, and be truly welcomed by the proud proprietor – with joy and concern for your well-being. Note, as you drive along, the sound of a quick tap on the horn isn’t to tell you to hurry up or move over: It’s just, “Hello, friend!” I encourage you to try it: wave as you go by, and you will get a wave and a smile back. This is Anguilla, the real heart of a place I came to and now call home.”

“Anguilla is more than Sun, Sea and Sand – it offers unique experiences to freely explore the island, its culture, its festivals, and to meet wonderful, friendly people. Stay in the finest resorts and enclaves, affordable hotels and villas or the smallest of inns. Eat great food from vans to gourmet restaurants, and “lime” at some of the best, most funky beach bars in the West Indies. Do retail therapy at art galleries and small boutiques. Tranquillity wrapped in blue, so many different shades!”

beaches All Caribbean islands have beaches, right? Not like ours. We may seem boastful, but we can back it up. Did you know there are 33 beaches within half an hour of ANYWHERE you stay on the island? That all our beaches are public? That often, you can have a beach to yourself? That most have pure white sand (the rest gold or pink)? And on many, you will find the kind of laid-back, charming beach bar you only thought existed in your imagination (or in a Jimmy Buffet song).

Denis the taxi man was waiting under the tamarind tree to take us on an ‘island tour’. What followed was a taxi trip like no other. The man had the biggest grin I had ever seen. He talked nonstop about the island, his famous brothers, the music, and beaches, beaches, beaches. Everyone we passed he hailed, beeped, high fived or pointed out during the short ride. But it was hot on that little bus, and much as I enjoyed his Anguilla 2013-2014

Not too soon, we arrived at the world famous Anguilla beach, but I was pretty sure I’d seen perfection on arrival. “This will surely disappoint,” I thought. “. . .lots of beautiful beaches and we all have our favorites as it is difficult to choose just one. One of mine is Sandy Ground - just enough activity with the supply and cargo carriers coming and going, local fishermen, sailing school activities, vacationers on their luxurious sailbaots etc. to keep one interested and amused at times. One of the best “shows” is the launching of the Anguilla sailboats for Easter week races. . .well worth the price of admission! Plus you have ten or so bar/restaurant establishments all within walking distance once your car is parked. Some of the many reasons we love Anguilla: her beaches, her people and why we return each year, visit and now call home...”

“THIS is paradise,” my family and I thought when we stepped foot on Barnes Bay, the first beach we visited in Anguilla. The clear turquoise water, the white sand, and more often than not, we only shared the beach with a handful of people at most. Shoal Bay East remains the most iconic in our books, with its strip of laid-back beach bars and pockets of pure, unmarked, natural beauty. Anguilla’s beaches have all the elements that make them world-class beauties. What is that one extra-special ingredient that truly sets them apart? An air of unpretentiousness. Anguilla is not the land of the see-and-be-seen scene. Here, I feel at home.”

“My three favourite beaches in no particular order are: Rendezvous Bay - its vast expanse of white sand and blue sky and sea entices me; Little Bay – Sense of exclusivity and adventure and I recently discovered for myself that it is great for snorkeling and scuba diving; and Crocus Bay – evokes many childhood memories and I embrace its rustic simplicity & rich history.”

las and hotels that offer packages, we don’t have the standard ‘all-inclusive’ packages found on many islands. Anguilla has a thriving restaurant scene, and most accommodations encourage their guests to go out and sample our amazing culinary diversity during their stay. Rates in our hotels fluctuate depending on the season. “High” season in Anguilla is between December and Easter; “Low” season is after Easter to mid-November. “Festive” refers to the two weeks around Christmas and is the most expensive time to come to Anguilla. Demand is high, as many guests rebook every year, so if you want to come for Christmas, reserve accommodation early. Year round, Anguilla has something for everyone. Many love Festive, as it is as busy as Anguilla gets. The top restaurants require advance reservations, and the island is busy with celebrities and families who return year after year in private jets. High season is popular, because our guests often come from cold places. Low season is quieter, but the weather is still perfect and the rates are excellent. It’s the ideal season for a destination wedding or special event. The most important aspect of your accommodation choice (after you’ve set your budget) is to decide if you want a full-service experience or a more ‘do-ityourself’ approach. You may think that hotels

eat out In Anguilla dining out is (almost) a national sport (alongside the more traditionally acknowledged national sport of Boat-Racing). Tourists and locals alike can be seen eating out in our many and varied restaurants. It’s what we do. In Anguilla, you can enjoy exquisite international cuisine, authentic Caribbean cooking, funky fusion, simple BBQ—basically, whatever your tummy desires.

Our repeat guests usually arrive on island with a list of favourite spots to revisit and eagerly ask what’s new. On the beach, around the pool, and over meals, the most popular topic of conversation is “Where shall we make a reservation tomorrow?” When making new friends on island, most people swap must-go and do-try lists. Certain parts of Anguilla have a greater density of places to eat: think of Meads Bay, where you can walk from your hotel or villa to a range of restaurants; ditto Sandy Ground, the nightlife capital of Anguilla, and The Valley. also exposes a choice of venues for tasty seafood, and if the time is right (Easter), dig into the Festival del Mar, when the whole village is given up to the pleasure of eating seafood for two days. Wherever you stay, fine food is nearby. While you’re here, we recommend you feast on seafood. Try our local (indigenous) crayfish, spiny lobster, conch, or if you are lucky enough to be offered one, the slipper lobster (a.k.a. ‘sea louse’) is a great delicacy. Fresh snapper, wahoo, mahi-mahi, and tuna are some of the fresh fish caught daily in our waters and brought ashore in Island Harbour, the Cove or Sandy Ground. Be warned: Anguillians like their fish whole, so make sure you request a fillet if you prefer the simpler approach to eating fish. Another must-try are our locally grown tomatoes, eggplants and peppers – as sweet and delicious as those from the Mediterranean. The most popular way to prepare and eat meat is Barbeque, much of it roadside. All over the island and recognizable by the clouds of fragrant smoke and cars parked higgledy-piggeldy near a battered tent, vendors normally sell chicken, pork ribs and garlic bread. Sometimes, you can pick up conch soup, whole fish, local pork and rice ‘n’ peas – ask what they have when you arrive. Then, grab a cold drink from the cooler, sit on anything you can, and join in the chat and lime with the locals. During the day, eat lunch on the beach. clubs during the day, offering lunch or snack menus, frosty drinks and complimentary beach chairs. They’re a great way to discover a new beach every day without the hefty entrance fees you would find in the South of France or other famous beach spots. Truly extraordinary is the quality of the food that comes out of the smallest beach bars, found on quiet beaches and offshore cays. You will be delighted by the tasty home cooking served in a place that looks like a shack. You may have to wait a while, but relax, enjoy the view, or have another swim—it’s worth it. At night, our hotels and independent restaurants pride themselves on their dining choices. You can enjoy most types of international cuisine as well as Caribbean and Caribbean fusion. Although they have excellent wine lists and serve exquisite cuisine, most of our restaurants require only the relaxed dress code that suits most of the island. Dress up if you want to, but don’t feel pressured. Memories are made and romance comes easy when you sip your aperitif under the stars or share a dessert listening to the waves breaking a few feet away. As much of Anguilla’s nightlife revolves around dining out, most restaurants host entertainers on select nights. These include single performers and entire bands, playing original and international music that sometimes leads to dancing. I am always surprised by the range of talent I can find on the island. Finally, Anguilla doesn’t have ‘fast food’. You won’t find any of those chain restaurants you’ve seen in the rest of the world. anguilla dining eat out “When my guests want local cuisine, I recommend Andy’s, and for a great day out with the kids, Sandy Island.”
Kathy Haskins, Shoal Bay Villas
I am an avid food lover, which explains what I love to do on my day off. Dining in Anguilla has become a keen interest of mine, that is why Flavours Restaurant is not just a business, it is also a hobby. I find great pleasure in exploring the different cuisines the island has to offer and spending time with my very supportive family and friends.

“Conch Soup from Hungry’s Food Van in the Valley across from Wallblake House. Tuna Nicoise from Valley Bistro. Seafood Quesadilla at Hank’s on Shoal Bay. Plantation Sandwich from Papa Lash’s food truck (In the Valley by Ronald Webster Park).”
Carrie Bogar, Veya Restaurant
“Dining on Anguilla is such a great experience, one that you could not have even in a major city. There are choices from roadside food vans and carts to 5-star dining, and you don’t have to take the subway to get there!”
“In season, we don’t get out much, but when we find ourselves with a day off, we really enjoy going to Johnno’s for steamed snapper and fungi. And nothing beats a day out at Prickly Pear!”

go. see. do. But what is there to do in Anguilla beyond the beaches? Those that love Anguilla often quote the things it doesn’t have – things like casino’s, theme parks, multiplexes, jet ski’s, chain stores and fast food franchises - as one of the reasons they love it so. Sometimes people make the mistake of thinking because we don’t have those things there isn’t much to do – well, they are wrong – there’s plenty.

Explore the Sea: Everything revolves around the sea in Anguilla so no trip to our island is complete without a day out on a boat (see our Spend a day off shore on page 100). There is also FANTASTIC fishing for the enthusiast (charter one of the professional sports fishing boats ) or amateur (ask your boat charter to provide lines when booking). There are no jet skis in Anguilla but you can water-ski and tube and hire small speedboats. Luxury Hotels have their own water sports teams offering Hobie Cats and instructors. DaVida in Crocus Bay hires out kayaks and paddleboards, and the calm bay with its proximity to Little Bay makes the perfect place for water sports of all kinds. Anguilla’s diving is excellent (particularly between March and August) . PADI instructors including Shoal Bay Scuba (see page 87), Special D and Vigilant Divers offer diving for all levels, including a selection of wreck dives. You can get certified in Anguilla and a number of accommodations offer dive packages. There is also great snorkeling all around the island – often just off our most popular beaches. With the kids: Anguilla is the perfect place to spend quality time with your family just hanging out on the beach. However if you need a little me time, hotels offer activities and clubs and private villas will arrange childcare to suit your brood (villas are often well equipped for children with lots of games, a media rooms and sports equipment). Professional babysitting and childcare services are widely available through companies like Travelite - who also do baby equipment hire. Time for a treat? There are a number of ice cream and candy spots to head to if the little ones need a sugar rush. Kel’s Candy in North Hill has a great selection and holds regular movie nights or, listen for the Tropical Treats ice cream van that 2013-2014

Most of the activities described below are child friendly as are the restaurants which often have a kids menu or can arrange smaller portions on request. History and Heritage: If you are interested in the history of our island make sure you pay a visit to the Heritage Museum in East End and take a tour and talk to the proprietor and author Colville Petty - a wealth of information on Anguilla. Or visit the Rebel Marine boatyard and chat with David Carty, a boat builder and historian and the producer of the DVD ‘Nuttin Bafflin” a fascinating documentary about Anguilla and its national sport Boat Racing. Explore the island: Despite our small size and tough terrain there are a number of tours and walks that you can enjoy inland. Nature Explorers offer wildlife and birding tours, Anguilla Access offer unique cultural experiences that include night tours. Blue Sea Anguilla can organize a range of activities including heritage tours and trips to the Katouche area with its small rainforest and ancient caves. You can ‘do it yourself’ by following the clearly marked Heritage Trail. The Anguilla National Trust, situated in the Valley can provide information about the preservation of Anguilla’s natural, cultural, and historic heritage. Art: Anguilla has a thriving arts community and many practicing artists have their own shops/studios with work to browse and buy. Look out for Lynn Bernbaum’s showroom in Sandy Ground (where actor Robert Downey Junior was spotted buying lots of work last year); Tanya Clark ‘s Phoenix Gallery in South pmiller@anguillanet.com

There is a small but enthusiastic Kite surfing community and the conditions are fantastic. We suggest that if you are looking for an adrenaline rush there are thrills a plenty to be had climbing down the rope ladder at Little Bay, swimming out to and climbing up “the rock” then jumping off. They are so close you can do it in a day. We suggest east to west in this order: Rendezvous, Cove, Maunday’s, Shoal Bay West, Barnes Bay and finishing at Meads Bay for the sunset. All of them have fabulous restaurants/beach bars for refreshment stops.

8 am After breakfast, head to CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa on Rendezvous Bay. Spend the morning getting pampered in their state-of-the-art Venus Spa, and choosing from a breathtaking array of spa services in the Venus Spa . Alternatively, enjoy a round of golf on the Greg Norman-designed course with friends or get lessons from the resident pro. The course boasts spectacular views of the neighboring islands and West End beaches, a fully stocked pro shop and a handy trolley service – enjoy a frosty one, or two, while you play. 12:00 pm For lunch, take the 5-minute drive over to Mead’s Bay, a spectacular mile and a half of white sand. Choose from a range of lovely beachside restaurants that serve lunch and provide beach club facilities. We suggest Straw Hat , located at the Frangipani Resort, where they serve hearty sandwiches, fresh salads and other delights. Cool down in the Meads Bay waters, and enjoy their complimentary beach chairs while you snooze off your lunch. Time to leave, but not before popping into Petals Boutique to enjoy a little light shopping for clothes, jewelry and local gifts. Another 5-minute drive takes you to Seaside Stables. Saddle up and enjoy the most romantic horseback ride of your life along the pristine sands of Cove Bay at sunset. Head onward over to Anacaona Boutique Hotel, situated at the West End of Meads Bay, for the Mayoumba Folkloric Dinner Theatre at Anacaona event (every Thursday). Sample delicious local food buffet style; then, enjoy some rousing dinner theatre. The energetic, cultural performance tells the story of Anguilla’s History through song and dance, and afterwards, the energetic can join in.

Many of the most important sites mentioned in the “Anguilla Heritage Trail” can be spotted as you drive around this area (look out for large, local stone boulders and descriptive plaques). This is a great day out for those who would like to see a different side of Anguilla and mix a little history, shopping and art into their day (don’t worry – we threw in a beach stop as well). Oh, and be warned: it also includes all three of Anguilla’s roundabouts!

9 am Enjoy breakfast and a stunning vista from Flavours Restaurant on Back Street, the only one-way street in Anguilla. The views over Sandy Ground Village, Road Bay and the offshore Cays are simply the best. Drive towards the Valley and, on the way, stop at Tanya Clarke’s charming Phoenix Gallery—easily spotted because of the colourful flowers that decorate its walls. Next stop is SeaSpray (also colourful), on the roundabout, which sells reasonably priced, locally made gifts, art and, if you are thirsty, yummy fruit smoothies for the road.

10:30 am Drive into the Valley and park at Wallblake House. Tour this historic Plantation House and the neighbouring Catholic Church. Walk across the road to the “Old Factory” complex, where commerce in Anguilla began. Visit the Stone Cellar Art Gallery, and be amazed at the beauty of the Plein Air paintings by famous Caribbean impressionist Sir Roland Richardson. Afterwards, pop next door to the buzzy Valley Bistro to enjoy a rejuvenating Lavazza coffee and a browse through ZaZAA Treasures. Make your way through the historic Upper Valley, towards Crocus Bay looking at the picturesque caribbean buildings. Drive down Anguilla’s steepest hill to peaceful Crocus Bay, where you can sit under the tamarind tree a while and watch the locals play dominoes. Head to the stylish da’Vida’s Bayside Grill for lunch. Enjoy frosty drinks, attentive beach service and fabulous views of pelicans as they cruise the bay.

Drive back up the hill, turn right, and drive over the island’s highest point towards North Hill Village and then on to Sandy Ground . Arrive in Road Bay and pop into Roy’s or Johnno’s in time for a Sundowner (the best places in Anguilla to spot the elusive ‘Green Flash’ during the sunset). Enjoy them either on their small tree-shaded deck or pop them into the car for a breakfast picnic. Drive along Harbour Ridge Drive in an easterly direction (past Hibernia Restaurant & Art Gallery) and head out into the bush to join Windward Point Drive, enjoying spectacular views of Scilly Cay, Island Harbour and the pristine Captain’s Bay. 10 am Breathe deeply of fresh ocean air and relax a while at Windward Point Bay, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Caribbean Sea. Take in the views of Scrub Island just half a mile away, beachcomb and enjoy the wild natural beauty. Head west along sandy tracks until you see tall trees and signs for Nat’s Palm Grove, a sign that you are close to Savannah Bay/Junks Hole. Enjoy close-to-shore snorkeling and shell collecting on the pinks sands, and look for kitesurfers on the horizon. Dry off and head west to East End Village. Spend an enjoyable, informative hour at the Anguilla Heritage Collection, a small museum packed with thoughtful exhibits illustrating the island’s history. Please ask your concierge to confirm opening times for the Heritage Museum the day before. Drive through the middle of the island to the North Coast, arriving at Shoal Bay East , which is justifiably famed as one the world’s best. Pick one of the restaurants on the nearly 2 miles of sugarwhite sand. Enjoy a swim or offshore snorkel, and make sure you walk to ‘The Point’, Anguilla’s most iconic beach experience. Leave the beach and drive along Bay View Road to Island Harbour to Everett’s Beach Bar. As the light fades and the stars come out, watch the fishermen on the Cay and the Pelicans diving in the Bay. o vacation in Anguilla is complete without a visit to one of our off-shore Cays – small islands that can be reached only by boat. Everyone has a favourite: some are quicker to get to than others, another is close enough to swim to, and some have restaurants. All are adventures.
editors’ tip Local motor boat charter services such as Gotcha, GB Express, Sea Pro Charters, Shoal Bay Scuba, and sailing charters like Chocolat and Tradition provide lunch-inclusive packages at most of the Cays. Make sure you ask your concierge to check opening times, when planning your trip.

Closest is Scilly Cay. As the owner “Gorgeous” Eudoxie Wallace says, all you have to do to hitch a ride is to walk onto the dock at Island Harbour and “wave your arms like a madman.” Then, someone (usually one of his sons) will come get you. The free boat ride takes less than five minutes. Alight on a tiny island with a small sandy beach, Tiki huts and conch shell walls. They serve any combination of grilled lobster, crayfish and chicken. Beware the famously lethal Rum punch, and enjoy dancing to the band on Sundays. Sandy Island is the next closest. Get there on “Happiness”, the sea shuttle that departs daily (in-season for a small fee) from the pier next to Johnno’s in Sandy Ground. It’s a beautiful, sandy islet set in sparkling turquoise waters. It has a few palm trees and a cool bar/restaurant serving a range of fresh fish, crustaceans, BBQ, drinks and, sometimes, live music. There’s not much shade, so bring waterproof sunscreen and enjoy swimming and snorkeling with panoramic views of Anguilla. Prickly Pear Cay is a longer boat ride, but worth it. On arrival, the sweeping lagoon will take your breath away. The mile-long beach is a wonder. Choose between two restaurants: Johnno’s on the Cay (under the palms to the east; boat transfers on request) and Prickly Pear Bar & Restaurant (a colourful place to the west; with beach chairs for rent). Both serve lunches and price their beverages reasonably. Snorkel, line fish, and watch the local fishermen coming ashore to grab a beer and pop their catch on the coals after lunch service. Want adventure? Dog and Scrub Islands are even more remote with no restaurants or facilities. The only way to visit is by private charter. Both make ideal picnic and ‘desert island’ experiences: you’re likely to have them entirely to yourself. Expect a full day in the sun, and bring adequate shade and plenty of provisions. Your boat charter is likely to drop you off in the morning and not return until the afternoon!

island and get a ‘quick fix’ of a different culture and experience. Anguilla is perfectly positioned to do this as our closest neighbor (just 20 minutes and $43 incl. tax round trip by local ferry) is the busy, buzzy, diverse island of Saint Martin/Sint Maarten one of the smallest places divided between two nations. The island is divided roughly 60/40 between France and the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The southern Dutch part comprises Sint Maarten and the northern French part comprises the Collectivity of St. Martin. Saint Martin/Sint Maarten has developed a very different type of tourism
O
ne of the many advantages of a vacation in the Caribbean is that it is often easy to visit a neighboring
to Anguilla and a trip to our neighbor is likened (by locals) to a trip to the big city. The twin nation island boasts lots of duty free shopping, fine dining (including some great French restaurants) and a wealth of fast food outlets. You can also partake in a slew of activities that are not possible in Anguilla— such as jet ski-ing, zip-lining, gambling at one of their many Casinos, going to the movies or dancing into the wee hours at international night clubs. It is very easy to take a day trip to Saint Martin/Sint Maarten– for sightseeing, shopping and lunch. Please see the section marked getting to Anguilla for information on our local ferry service and charter services that will be happy to take you. For your enjoyment we have outlined some suggested activities for a fun day out.
Take a 20-minute ride on the local ferry to Marigot (French side capital). Rent a car from one of the many local operators (they drive on the right!) or ask a taxi driver to give you an island tour. Take the road through Sandy Ground and the Lowlands—cross into the Dutch Side and pass the new development, Porto Cupecoy. Visit the neighboring Blu Mall—SXM’s largest, and newest mall for some shopping. Continue through the Maho area with its golf course, nightclubs and casinos, past the airport and on to Simpson Bay. Stop in at the Yacht Club for coffee—the perfect place to view the lagoon and all the mega yachts passing through. Venture over the hill towards Philipsburg (Dutch-side capital), and take in amazing views of both sides of the island and neighboring islands from the hilltop lookout. Once in ‘town’, pick up dutyfree bargains at the jewelry and fine goods shops that line Front and Back Streets. Alternatively, stroll the boardwalk and enjoy views of the cruise ships in Great Bay. Drive north towards Orient Bay (You’ll cross the border again!). Pick one of the fabulous French restaurants along the island’s most infamous beach (there is a naturist club at one end, so expect to see naked people walking by!) and enjoy a leisurely lunch. Pass through the charming “GastroVillage” of Grand Case and on to Loterie Farm on Pic Paradis. The energetic can zip-line through the tropical rain forest; the less-so enjoy late afternoon refreshment in their restaurant.

Don’t want to rent a car or get a taxi? Enjoy a walking tour of Marigot! 8:15 am Catch the morning Ferry. Walk and browse the colourful tourist/craft market set up on the waterfront. Close to the market you will find Sarafina’s and La Sucrière, two excellent Patisseries choose one and enjoy a Café au lait and their spectacular display of fresh pastries and cakes. Watch the locals and visiting ‘yachties’ come in to stock up for the day. 11 am Continue on to Rue du General de Gaulle —Marigot’s premier shopping street. Stop in at Jewels by Love and pick up a choice timepiece from a luxury watchmaker or shop for that stunning engagement ring she isn’t expecting. Pass into the Marina Royale for even more shopping. Walk the boardwalk at the Marina and take your time choosing the perfect spot for lunch. Enjoy French and International Cuisine and views of the yachts and lagoon. Sip a glass of perfectly chilled rose—and make believe you are in the South of France for the day. After lunch head for famous Caribbean Impressionist Sir Roland Richardson’s Art Gallery on #6 rue de la Republique . His “Plein Air” canvases are full of Caribbean colour, light and charm and are displayed in a perfectly restored “Gingerbread” house with pretty gardens. A pleasant place to spend some time before heading ‘home’ to Anguilla on the Ferry. Leisurely make your way back to the Port, indulge in a little more shopping or an aperitif on the way but make sure you are in time to catch the last Ferry back to Anguilla at 7.00!

liming Liming later? During your time in Anguilla, you’ll hear this question often. Liming is a Caribbean* thing. It means hanging out in a public place with friends, enjoying the scene. We like to lime in Anguilla. Come lime with us. *Used mainly in the Leeward Islands. Urban Dictionary defines Liming as: “any leisure activity entailing the sharing of food and drink, the exchange of tall stories, jokes and anecdotes etc., provided the activity has no explicit purpose beyond itself.”
anguilla summer festival and boat racing (a.k.a. the ultimate lime)

Anguilla Summer Festival and boat racing (a.k.a. the ultimate lime): if you love Anguilla, love to party and want to know more about how we cut loose and relax, make sure you visit during Anguilla’s colourful and friendly Carnival, which always takes place the first 10 days of August. Highlights include local boat racing (Anguilla’s national sport— find out more by watching the wonderful
documentary “Nuttin Bafflin”), ‘getting on bad’ or simply watching the wonderful spectacle of our sunrise jam, J’overt, which is followed by the Caribbean’s biggest beach party at Sandy Ground. Both activities take place on “August Monday”, the first Monday in August every year. For a full list of Summer Festival activities, visit the Anguilla Tourist Board website www.ivisitanguilla.com.

live music liming Anguilla’s Liming scene revolves around listening and dancing to live music at a bar or restaurant. Artists often perform a combination of international hits, dancehall, soca and reggae covers (check out the Musical Brothers, who perform every Thursday at the Pumphouse). Anguilla is also home to a cadre of songwriters, so expect to hear original music from artists like British Dependency, Bankie Banx, and his son Omari Banks & 11 Band; Panther Vibes Intl., Exodus, Infusion, True Intentions...the list goes on. At most establishments, the live music is free as long as you eat or drink there. Some bands and venues charge a small cover. Schedules change, but your concierge will be happy to tell you about the most popular regular limes.

festivals liming Anguilla comes alive with striking festivals, such as the Festival del Mar (Island harbor on Easter Saturday and Sunday every year), a two-day lime inspired by everything from the sea. Join locals feasting on delicious seafood and live music, and watch or participate in fishing, swimming and crab racing comnights. Other village festivals to look out for are Welches (cultural displays and old time local delicacies), South Valley Community Fair (local food, cooking competitions and music) and the Anguilla Lit Fest (3 days of literary jollification in May). 116 www.trueanguilla.com All Photos: Š Josveek Huligar/anguilla access

all about the lime
“Smokey’s is a great for a beach party. The atmosphere is great, and we always get a good spot on the beach, thanks to Felix & Desiree. The Musical Brothers play live music on Saturday afternoons, and you’ll see tourists and locals dancing or sipping cocktails. The Sunset Lounge at the Viceroy is a favourite. We like to order cocktails and sushi and then kick back and take in the breathtaking sunset views. After dinner, we head down to the Dune Preserve, an amazing wooden labyrinthine created by legendary Reggae star Bankie Banx, and listen to his son Omari and his band, Banx Eleven perform.”
“I’ve been a DJ in Anguilla for years, and I play all over the island; some regular nights (Monday’s at Viceroy Sunset Lounge), private parties, weddings and events. I play a mix of local and international music – I usually start off with some Reggae then watch the crowd… then mix it up. I love it when I have everyone on the floor dancing. People love to dance when they come to Anguilla.”
DJ Sugar, Anguilla
NAOMI CAMBRIDGE, Lisa Basire and Natalie FitzpatriCK , Zemi Beach, Anguilla “I like Friday nights in the Valley. Late afternoons and early evenings at The Valley Bistro for drinks or early food – it’s a good way to catch up with people and wind down. Then, move on to the Blue Bar at Ce Blue – excellent pizza, Italian food, and good music, too.”
“For dancing, I like the Pumphouse on a Thursday or Friday. It’s casual and fun. I also love to go to Straw Hat restaurant and have a drink at the bar with friends. Kerry the bartender mixes great drinks.” Marisol Alfaro, Anguilla
John Connor, Anguilla
editors’ tip Regular limes: Johnno’s (Sun lunchtime); Da’Vida (Sunday lunchtime); Veya (Mon, Tues, Fri & Sat); The Pumphouse (Tues, Thurs, Fri & Sat); Elvis’ Beach Bar for late nights with a DJ and big screen sports (except Tuesday), The Dune Preserve (Wed’s, Fri), Scilly Cay (Wed & Sun lunchtime); On Da Rocks (Sun night) Tokyo Bay, DJ (Fri), Smokey’s (Sat lunch & most nights in season).
“Anguillians are creative by nature – out of necessity. Our conditions created that, and it comes out in the music. There is a plethora of live acts and creative entities to embrace during your visit.” Davon Carty, Music Producer

weddings in paradise i do “Our wedding in Anguilla was the ultimate destination wedding! We had 115 of our closest friends and family on the island to celebrate with an entire week of activities. We had everyone choose hotels on Meads Bay, so we were all within walking distance of each other. We did group brunches and dinners, Thursday night at the Pumphouse for live music and dancing, Sunday at Scilly Cay, and boat excursions to Little Bay and Sandy Island. Our friends and family left loving the island just as much as we do!” “Anguilla is the perfect place without the need for all-inclusives. The clear turquoise water and beautiful sandy beaches provide the perfect backdrop for a special day. Anguilla has some of the most amazing chefs and bakers in the Caribbean. The couple has amazing choices for their guests – Anguilla’s are among the most beautiful villas in the Caribbean. If they’re getting married on the beach or in one of the beautiful churches, the couple is sure to have a unique wedding. There is no place on earth like Anguilla!” © Chris Werner photography

“Anguilla is a stimulating place to live. The relaxed pace of life belies the activity of the networking hub. You meet interesting residents and visitors with diverse passions and interests. Career, personal life and community work all seem to converge into one rich melting pot of life in Anguilla. There’s never a dull moment – there is always, something happening… ideas being shared, initiatives being created and connections being forged.”
“Thirty years ago, we came to Anguilla almost by chance. We were really impressed by the friendliness and warm welcome of the Anguillian people. We have been fortunate to have traveled extensively, and we were used to the cold, unfeeling attitude of local peoples to visitors. Anguillians are different. They are truly glad to have you on their island. We easily decided to purchase a beachfront condominium. As our family grew, we needed bigger accommodations, and thought that if we made it well-appointed and comfortable, others would be able come and enjoy Anguilla as much as we do. So, the Bird of Paradise was born.” Jon and Melody Dill, Bird of Paradise
Janine Edwards, Sunset Homes “For our visitors who appreciate the tranquillity, gorgeous beaches and friendly people, consider purchasing a villa. They can rent the villa shortterm and the revenue generated will pay for the annual maintenance costs. They would then have a holiday spot for their use, as well as for family and friends. I suggest they rent the property for at least a week prior to negotiating a purchase so they can get a true feeling of the property. Their Anguilla real estate agent and/or attorney can assist with the process and make it stress free.”
“The desire to own a home or a resort residence on Anguilla is an inspirational dream--a real estate based romantic desire of lifestyle and asset appreciation...all of which is wonderfully possible. With numerous offerings to select, the choice to own a piece of “The Rock” is within most budgets--so come and join those of us fortunate enough to live here year round, even if initially your time with us is more constrained...just knowing you’ve made a wise, warm weather, safe investment will make you smile all year long.”

“For us, Anguilla is all about the Caribbean concept of ‘one love.’ We fell in love with the island, its people, its culture, the sun and sand, and it developed into an irresistible cosmic pull to relocate our lives here. Anguilla has given us meaningful experiences and pure joy beyond our wildest dreams. We are grateful.”

last words
Thank you for reading True Anguilla. It was certainly a pleasure putting it together; mainly because of all the great people we got to work with, the beautiful places we had to visit and fabulous food we had to take photographs of! We would sincerely like to thank the following for their contribution to True Anguilla: Our advertisers (thank you for making this happen!) Our contributors (for their exquisite photography, wonderful anecdotes, interesting interviews and exceptional encouragement). Our colleagues in Tourism & Commerce: The Anguilla Hotel and Tourism Association
(AHTA) and their membership; the Anguilla Tourist Board (ATB) and their agents; The Government of Anguilla (Hon Haydn Hughes, the Ministry of Tourism and their agents, and the Ministry of Finance); the Anguilla Chamber of Commerce (ACOCI) and all the independent tourism practitioners listed on pages 142. And finally, we hope you enjoyed this magazine and that it truly reflects your Anguilla experience. If you would like to tell us what you love about Anguilla or tell us what you would like to see in the next magazine you can do so (and potentially win a trip back to the island at the same time) by visiting our website www.trueanguilla.com, joining our mailing list and filling in a brief survey. We hope to hear from you. Trudy Nixon & Orrett Wynter Publishers, True Anguilla
