GOAL LINES SPECIAL CUP EDITION
WE TAKE A LOOK AT THE FINALS OF THE STATE CUP AND PRESIDENTS CUP OF 2016 In this special edi.on of Goal Lines Magazine we take a look at the finalists of the two biggest cup compe..ons in the state. The first finals, for the younger teams were back in November, and it’s con.nued on from there. From the U12 age group up through the U18 players, these two tournaments provided the drama, the excitement, and the type of compe..on
we expect at the highest level of soccer Oregon has to offer. For the runners up, there is sa.sfac.on in knowing that you were in the final game. For the winners, it’s the opportunity to compete in the Regional tournaments in Colorado with the President’s Cup, and in Boise, Idaho for the State Cup winners. Enjoy our teams in their special edi.on of Goal Lines Magazine.
“Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that is it not the fish they are after.” -Henry David Thoreau
Dear OYSA family and Readers of Goal Lines,
We have had another great soccer year of league play and then into President’s Cup and State Cup Championships.
Again, teams stepped up to the challenge and played their hearts out to move on to the next level of Cup play. Every game was a BIG DEAL to the players and coaches, including the parents. Congratulations to the winners. And hopefully all teams and players benefitted from the high level of competition in the Cups.
Runners up, there is next year, building on the successes of this year.
Parents, thanks for your endless support of the players. You are giving your son or daughter an opportunity for personal and team development that will benefit them even in years to come, not only in sports, but in life as well. Just think of all the lessons learned in teamwork and commitment and sportsmanship.
It is in keeping with the Mission Statement of OYSA. “To foster an environment that promotes the physical, mental, and emotional development of Oregon’s youth through the sport of soccer.”
Hope you enjoy reading the quotes and seeing all the photos in this special issue. Thanks for sharing them with family and friends.
Steve Meckel
President OYSA
WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE STATE CUP WINNERS? First and foremost they deserve some congratulations for winning the tournament, but there is little time to celebrate before ‘regionals’. Just 44 days after they got their medals around their necks they’ll be headed west to represent Oregon in the Far West Regional Championships.
The US Youth Soccer Far West Regionals take place June 20-26 at Simplot Sports Complex in Boise, Idaho. The event will feature Boys and Girls teams in the Under-12 through Under-19 age groups who will compete for a regional championship and a spot at the 2016 US Youth Soccer National Championship in Frisco, Texas.
Check out the video below to see what the Far West Regionals is all about.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE PRESIDENTS CUP WINNERS? Things don’t slow down for our Presidents Cup winners as they prepare for the trip to Colorado to represent Oregon in the Regional Presidents Cup tournament.
The US Youth Soccer Region IV Presidents Cup takes place June 14-19 at Stenger Soccer Complex in Arvada, Colo. The event will feature Boys and Girls teams in the Under-13 through Under-17 age groups who will compete for a regional championship and a spot at the 2016 US Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup, July 14-17 in Tulsa, Okla.
Check out the video below to see what the Presidents Cup is all about.
HOW DID IT FEEL? We asked the head coaches of each team in the finals, winners or runners up, about their experience in the tournament, the final game itself, and what it mean to their players to participate in the top two tournaments ofd the year. This is what some of them had to say…
State Cup as always was a very competitive competition As expected the final was full of energy and passion. Although we didn't get the result we had hoped for i'm extremely proud of my team for making it this far. Great experience for the lads. - Michael Jamieson, FC Portland U18 Boys
It was a great experience, well organized, with the appropriate amount of professionalism a State Cup deserves. The ceremony offered respect to both teams and was smooth. We have been in the final for the last 3 years and with everyone back in OYSA the games felt also better attended. - Jurgen Ruckaberle, Eugene Timbers 16 Girls
This was a super exciting experience for our girls. Making the State Cup Finals is not something that happens every year, let alone being the State Champs! Every team and every player works very hard all year, committing half their week practicing and playing games. It is super rewarding to see the success of my players. They have heart, they fight for every ball, they work their butts off, and they have been rewarded for this hard work. - Andy Frazier, NEU PDX U11 Girls WT Copa B03 boys had great State Cup run only to be beat by an excellent Crossfire team in the Finals eventually losing the game in PKs. Im really proud of how the boys played and although disappointed losing in the final the boys played their hearts out and can be proud of the way they played. - John Bain, Westside Timbers
The team and I had a great time during the Presidents Cup final. It was not the outcome we wanted but I was very proud of the HSC Velez team
- Roberto Iraheta, HSC Valez, U12 Boys
Great day. Weather was beautiful, the field was in near perfect condition, the officials were very good, and the opposition was of the highest quality. OYSA did a great job in organizing and running the Presidents Cup. - Joe Sottile, BSC Legends, U14 Boys
The State Cup final was a fantastic experience. One that our boys will remember long after their playing careers are over. This experience will undoubtedly fuel their future success, both for the sheer joy that comes from playing the beautiful game with a band of brothers, and for the lessons learned about working hard to achieve your goals and dreams. We used the word "relentless" a lot this year to describe our brand of soccer. But it should also be used to describe their relentless pursuit of greatness, both as soccer players and as tremendous young men! Thank you to OYSA for providing an opportunity for our team to compete at a high level, and for ensuring it was an unforgettable experience. - Mike Iacolucci, Crossfire Oregon, U12 Boys
Competing for your State Cup in itself is exciting. For this team, they had come up short the last two years, placing 2nd each May. This State Cup was about completing what they started. It was about achieving what they fell short on. It was about redemption. - Jen Davin, Bend FC Timbers
This was an amazing experience for not only the kids and coaches, but also for the families of Tapatio. This team has worked very hard for this moment. To see the excitement on the players faces the day of the finals, with such excitement and nerves running high. We can not tell you how happy we are to have this opportunity to play in regionals and represent Oregon. - Mike Alvarez, 4-H Tapatio, U16 Boys
It was great experience. Both the teams and the coaches were excited to play the games and enjoyed the competition. -Rusty Williams, WA Timbers U15 Girls
