On January 13th, 2018 we gave away some fantastic awards to members of Oregon Youth Soccer to people that you nominated and voted for. Here are their stories…
THE JIMMY CONWAY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD WINNER:
JERRY BOISVERT The award was introduced by Mick Hoban, and presented by Noeleen Conway. Noeleen’s award speech is below: —————— The purpose of the Lifetime Achievement Award as laid out in OYSA’s bylaws, "...is to recognize past and present participants of the Oregon Youth Soccer Association for an extraordinary contribution on behalf of youth soccer in Oregon. This contribution will be measured by a significant body of work or by the major accomplishments of the individual…” This year’s recipient of the Jimmy Conway Lifetime achievement Award could not have better defined these requirements if he had tried. You will struggle to find a man or woman in this state that has had a greater impact on a soccer community than this award recipient. This year’s recipient of the Jimmy Conway Lifetime achievement Award is Jerry Boisvert of the Lower Columbia Youth Soccer Association. Jerry was nominated last year by a longtime friend, and OYSA Western District Director, Fergus Loughran, and was approved unanimously by the Board of Directors in December. Jerry has previously received the OYSA Volunteer of the Year, Award and has spoken at this very AGM regarding field development and has continued to be a force of good in local soccer. Since the inception of LCYSA in 1984 the one constant in the program year in and year out has been Jerry. He’s never taken a year off; soccer and his community have always been his joy. He has seen through 20 club presidents and countless coaches. Jerry himself holds a C license, has coached at every level of the LCYSA program both rec and classic, and initiated their annual summer camp which has run every year now for more than 20 years. Jerry also coached Astoria High School varsity boys soccer for seven years and Astoria High School girls varsity soccer for four years. (continued on next page)

Jerry’s coaching and mentoring service alone is impressive but what is perhaps the most unique and amazing element of Jerry's tenure of service with LCYSA is the soccer complex. In the late 1980’s, the local school district canceled LCYSA’s field use agreement which pushed the club to find land and build its own field in 1990. Jerry and a group of key local volunteers undertook construction of the first field on what had been a local land fill. There was little expertise and a sharp learning curve, but a great field was now the club's and the club's alone. As the LCYSA youth program, as well as the Astoria and Seaside High School programs grew, the demand for field space required an additional field. A second field was developed with Jerry in the lead. Far superior to the first field, the second field was established as the home field for both Astoria and Seaside High Schools. These two schools have had a long rivalry but a common root in LCYSA. Subsequent years brought a third and fourth field, two with lights, an array of equipment, an impressive playground and an all grass complex that is a source of much pride in the community. While the first field was driven by many community members no one would argue with the fact that the next three were built by the drive and vision of Jerry. Jerry has had a passion that draws in area contractors, material suppliers, natural turf experts and donors who helped create a complex few communities could pull off without tax dollars or large corporate sponsors. On every project Jerry has personally designed the fields, irrigation, fences and all. He has laid the pipe, repaired leaks, mowed dug and left the sweat of his brow on every square foot of the facility. It is a common comment in the community that people never drive by the facility without seeing Jerry out there doing something. As a board, LCYSA have often spoke of how invaluable Jerry’s knowledge and labor have been and they have all wondered what if, God forbid, something happened to Jerry. Jerry was definitely an enormous figure in the soccer community, and we knew we could NEVER replace a volunteer of his stature and stamina.

Early this year, just one week after Jerry retired from his job at Pacific Coast Seafood’s in Warrenton, we received the news that Jerry had been diagnosed with cancer. Fergus, who nominated Jerry, and is here today, wrote, “Our champion, our superman, was very ill and the next several months were going to be difficult for Jerry as he battled cancer and for the club as we scrambled to fill his shoes. Jerry had been performing all the maintenance of the soccer complex almost single handedly and had planned to spend his retirement doing the same. Cancer torpedoed us all. As Jerry has undergone chemo and the trials it inflicted on his body we assembled a team of volunteers to mow and maintain the fields, line the fields, empty garbage, fertilize, spray edge, mend nets, fix leaks…the list is endless! It now takes six or seven of us to do what Jerry did by himself for years. We know the one thing we can do to keep Jerry’s spirits up has been to maintain the fields so that they kept looking good as Jerry passed them going to and from his chemo treatments.” As they maintained the fields, Jerry would often stop by to give direction and tips, and to help them understand the cycle of maintenance events etc. They watched as Jerry fought through it all to make sure no-one messed up his baby! His energy and strength sagged but he kept showing up to direct them! As we sit here today, in awe of this man, Jerry is STILL contemplating coaching this spring. Through his years as a coach, he has helped develop players and coaches as well as a love of soccer in our area. Through his years of service on the LCYSA board, he has helped direct that LCYSA soccer programs and facilities to serve soccer players of all ages in our community. Through his tireless efforts of building and maintaining fields, he took a facility from a single field to what is now the Warrenton Soccer Complex. Every kid and family who has played on the fields in youth programs, adult leagues, high school soccer, visiting college teams on team retreats, etc. all owe Jerry a debt of gratitude for a life of service. I could not think of a man who my husband would be more proud of to receive an award named after him, in it’s inaugural year than this years LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD WINNER, Jerry Boisvert

CHRIS HANEFELD Despite only having the privilege of working with Chris for close on 2 years I feel that her contributions over a decade to our club and our soccer community need to be recognized. Chris is an integral part of Eastside Timbers and before it Eastside United. She is part of the fabric of the club and has been loyal throughout her time serving under several DOC's including Gavin Wilkinson. She has an incredible bond with our membership and coaches with an encyclopedic knowledge of all our players and club history. She was beyond invaluable for me as a new DOC with no knowledge of our club when I came on board. She was kind and extremely patient haha Chris has been heavily involved with community outreach programs such as club jamborees and parades in the East County, started the wreath sales for players to gain funds for their account, organized the annual club auction and overseen the Food For Funds Program at Providence Park for families to earn money towards player fees. This is to name but a few of her spheres of influence. Her daughter played for the club for many years and is now an Asst Coach. Her whole family are Eastside through and through. They have been very understanding when Chris has gone above and beyond to give her personal time to our club! She has frequently helped coaches and families outside of business hours during evenings and weekends when they have had an issue or emergency. She never has nor ever would seek any kind of adulation and praise for her work. She would probably kill me if she knew I was nominating her, but she truly deserves this type of recognition in my opinion and that of our club leadership and coaching staff.

RENE GONZALEZ Rene's vision, execution and voice for change is unprecedented in our soccer community. After serving as the Oregon Adult Soccer Association President he moved to Vice President and now the President of Northeast United Soccer Club's Board. Rene's energy to positively impact our soccer community is contagious. Under Rene's leadership NEU*PDX has doubled it's number of Competitive Teams, Expanded into the High School Ages, have the largest recreational program in Portland. A non-profit that last year gave away over 100K in financial aid / scholarships. Rene's passion centers around the role soccer clubs play in positively shaping the future of youth sports in our community across Oregon. His voice for change / alternatives pertaining to leagues, cups and individual player programs has been central in crafting a brighter future for youth soccer clubs. Within NEU*PDX Rene has been central in implementing yearly survey's of our membership to give families a voice. These survey results shape our full service soccer club to continue to fulfill our mission of soccer being a vehicle to teach life lessons. Endless conference calls, executive committee calls, strategic planning, board development and execution of partnership deals are just a few of the areas Rene volunteers his time / energy.

SARA KLOTT Sara Klott has served with total dedication as a TOPSoccer buddy for four years in our Medford program. During this time she has given generously and worked endlessly to help provide the most ideal program possible for our players. In addition to being a buddy, Sara recruits all of our buddies for each of our players to work with. She knows very well what kind of person qualifies for the role buddies play, and does an excellent job of communicating and modeling the skills of being a buddy. She is always ready willing and able to spend extra time getting whatever we need for the kids. She is always the first to arrive and the last to leave. Most special of all is Sara's affect on the players she works with. From the moment they walk in, they are given the attention they deserve and are taken under her wing for the night. Two of the most common scenes each night are seeing Sara's players participating with huge smiles on their faces and them giving her a hug before they leave. We will get one more spring season with Sara before she heads off to college. We will miss her dearly, and hope that she can leave with the honor of being recognized as OYSA TOPSoccer Buddy of the Year honors.

JOSLYNN BIGELOW As you may or may not know, I started the TOPSoccer program in 2007 with EastSide United FC. Like any program just starting out it was challenging and scary. Joslynn Bigelow has been with me since I formed the program. She came to me as a confident middle-school student who had experience dealing with special needs kids because a family member has intellectual and behavioral challenges. All through high school and college, Joslynn juggled soccer, school and volunteering for TOPSoccer. In 2016, Joslynn took over the reigns as Coach. She was ready and had the enthusiasm of a toddler. Today, Joslynn is in her last year of college and graduating in the Spring with a degree in secondary education. Also, a few months back, she took a job as a Behavioral Therapist, because of a referral and encouragement from a TOPS parent. Do you think she’s on track to teach Special Education? There is no doubt in my mind that TOPSoccer has molded Joslynn’s life into what it is today. And, she is a huge win for my program. When she first started coaching Joslynn’s learned from me — but now I’m learning from her. Every week Joslynn brings lesson plans for both Honey Bears and Grizzly Bears. Remember, these are entirely different levels of players and completing different thought processes of coaching. We just ended our Fall session and on our last night Joslynn had our lower-functioning players, numbering over 25 (plus buddies) scrimmaging. She had the vision early on and developed her lesson plans for an all inclusive, successful scrimmage. I was so proud of our players. But honestly it was because of how Joslynn slowly and methodically introduced different “games” into each week’s lesson plans that made a successful end-of-season experience. Our Grizzly Bears attendance has exploded to 20+ players. Joslynn can keep them all engaged, on point and loving their time on the pitch. She has these players so confident about their soccer skills and themselves. Her work experience really has changed the way she handles herself on the pitch too. She’s always been a confident young lady, but now she has invaluable training to go with her persona. As the Director of the program, I had to nominate her again for Coach of the Year. She puts so much time and energy into the program and she is a shining example of how TOPSoccer can and does impact others.

ERIK MILLER Erik's dedication to the North East Soccer community is unmatched! He is the Age Group Head Coach for our 2005, 2001 & 2002 Boys along with leading Grant High School Boys Soccer. In the Fall Erik also oversees our Mighty Mites Program (4, 5 & 6 year olds) over 100 brand new aspiring soccer players each Saturday morning. He coordinates the high school players to volunteer coach these brand new players to our club. The enjoyment level and fun had by all is largely due to Erik's organization and leadership. As the Age Group Head Coach for the 2005 boys, Erik oversaw the development and ultimately the graduation of 5 players into the US Soccer Development Academy. The 2001 & 2002 boys age groups contain many players from across the city from tough socio economic families. To organize and keep these players engaged with the game through the high school ages is no small feat. Along with Erik's coaching responsibilities he also oversees the recreational teams uniforms, gear distribution, volunteer coaching education, practice field scheduling and gear collection of over 1,200 players along with nearly 300 volunteers. Not to mention leading one of the top high school boys soccer programs in the state. JV2 and JV Teams traditionally go undefeated, while the Varsity lost in the SemiFinals of the OSAA 6A Boys State Tournament to eventual champions Westview. Erik is deeply rooted in the North East Soccer Community and vitally impacts every level of our club!

GIRLS COMPETITIVE COACH OF THE YEAR:
BINH LE 
 Coach Binh has coached the U17 Power Rays team since they were U12. His older daughter plays on this team. Coach Binh took a brand new U14 team last May, who had only 5 returning players from a defunct team. The previous U13 team had a loosing season, they were unhappy with their coaches and a lot of parents & players were ready to call it quits and/or leave to go to Eastside or somewhere else and a few did! Coach Binh's daughter had played with this team 2 year prior, but has since played up. They had asked and begged him to take over the team and coach the girls. He agreed to take over. He added players from 5 & 6 Grades from Rec team to form CUSC U14 Arsenal. It was a band of misfits and a struggle to get all the girls on the same page. He went back to basic and emphasized team work and team effort. They lost their 1st league game in a tight and hard fought game by 1 point. After that, they outscored their opponents by 24 goals and became League Champions. They went on to win the Founders Cup in a nail biter of a game, 2 OT and finally in PK shoot out. Towards the end of the League play for U13 Fusion, their coach took a personal leave. Coach Binh stepped in and finished the last 2 games of the season. They were also going thru a rocky road and there was no cohesion and no real "team" play. Just individual players and moral was extremely low and little respect for each other. Coach Binh got them to enjoy playing together as a team. Moral was up, Parents were happy and girls were laughing and smiling and started to play as a team. They also went to Founders Cup and it also came down to PK. Through hard work and playing as a team, they pulled out a win and are also Champions!

TREVOR THARP Trevor optimizes the idea of Coach / Teacher! Being a full time elementary school teacher his ability to connect with kids is a thing of beauty! A master at garnering the attention of U8 - U10 age players is no small feat! His endless energy, enthusiasm and dedication to the players can be seen immediately! To have over 100 players under his guise it is a work of art to see him develop the next generation of NEU*PDX Boys & Girls. When you speak to older players within our club the name that consistently comes up is without question Coach Trevor! The organizing of over 100 players into teams, outline the schedule for each weekend and communicate effectively with parents is Coach Trevor's strength. Parents rave, "I don't know how he does it, taking the time to connect with my son in an individual way. He is like an orchestra conductor who can bring together a mass of individuals, 7 to 9 year old boys & girls, all in a collective direction. No small task and he does it with ease!" Being a mentor for our entry level coaches, many of which are young people transitioning from playing into coaches, is another area where Trevor shines. The number of coaches he has developed and graduated into the competitive coaching ranks is seen within the NEU*PDX coaching DNA. Not to mention he is a husband and dad of a young family!

JIM EYESTONE Club/Org: David Douglas Soccer Club Submitted by: Nichole Hedinger ———————— Coach Jim is an amazing coach. I know that what I describe won't do him or the work he does justice. Jim has a way of engaging the girls that builds them up. His two girls left the core team three seasons ago, but he is committed to these girls, and said he'll be their coach until there is no longer a team. He fosters hard work and personal responsibility both on and off the field. He has created an environment where girls (who are prone to infighting and competing against their own teammates at times) encourage one another and push each other to succeed with out fear. And that is a very hard take to accomplish with 10 and 11 year olds. When a girl maybe having a bad day or just isn't hitting her stride he will come alongside her and because of who he is the girl will work and pull herself back up. I could tell you about the amazing seasons we have and the fact that although it's a rec league we've only lost 4 games in the last 2 years. But our record isn't a reflection of hard drills and a coach who will push and win at all costs. Our record stands the way it does because of it's great leadership. Our parents love going to practices and games because we love each other, our girls are friends and these are the types of friendships that will last because they are built by mutual respect and trust. Jim gave that to us. He has given us and our girls something that no other coach could have, he gave us a community. And so it is for these reasons and many more that I feel James should be awarded coach of the year.

MONICA BOST Only been refereeing for a year now. Is currently a high school senior and studying French as a second language since freshman year. Has been playing soccer since she was a child, often on older teams which she credits as helping with her referee career. David Grbavac says of Monica, “she is incredibly advanced for her young age. Her biggest asset is her confidence. You simply don’t see that much of it in young female referees at her age. She is going to be a fantastic referee in the coming years”.

JOSIAH VERMILLION Born in Belize and lived in Sweden for 10 years, and grew up playing soccer. Began refereeing in the Summer of 2015 for some extra cash, and loved it so much he ended up progressing through the ranks. Started DA games and Far West Regional contests, too. David Grbavac, Mgr of Referee Development says Josiah is “one of the brightest young prospects I’ve seen come through this quickly in years. Our expectations of Josiah are sky high, and we have no doubt he will reach them”.

ALAN BLACK We are extremely excited to welcome Alan Black to our Annual General Mtg and workshops to give 5 hours of instruction to our top referees in the State. Alan’s resume speaks for itself and we consider ourselves very lucky to have someone instructing our referees who has such a vast knowledge of the game.
In 2002 refereed first Irish Premier League game as a 26 year-old and was 11 years as a professional referee. Appointed to the FIFA list as a referee in 2007 and in 6 years refereed in the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, ‘A’ internationals, under age level internationals (U17,19, 21) 2 UEFA finals tournaments (2007 U17 in Belgium and 2010 U19 in France). Over 6 years as a FIFA referee, officiated in 60 games in nearly 40 countries, including as a referee at the World Student Games Tournament in Belgrade in 2009. In 2010 was selected as one of only 12 referees in Europe to be part of the UEFA Talent and Mentor Development Program (2year program). Retired from active refereeing in 2013 aged 38. Within one year was selected to become an elite Irish FA Premier League Assessor and became referee coach for two FIFA referees. Since arriving in the U.S. in 2015, I now work as a Cal South State Instructor, one of the new USSF National Referee Coaches for 2017 and recently appointed as PRO Match Official Regional Development Assistant in addition to duties as an MLS Assessor.
BEN DUDLEY
Ben joined Positive Coaching Alliance in September of 2015, as the Executive Director of the Portland Chapter. As Chapter Executive Director, Ben is responsible for the success of the PCA-Portland Chapter. He works with the PCA-Portland Board to develop, implement and evaluate a long-term strategy for the chapter. He represents PCA in the local community by developing relationships with business, philanthropic, academic and government leaders. In addition, Ben is responsible for raising sufficient funds annually for PCA-Portland to thrive. Ben is a graduate of Baylor University, with a Church Recreation and Leisure Services Degree. He completed a Masters of Arts and Global Leadership Degree from Fuller Theological Seminary. He grew up a multi-sport athlete with soccer being his favorite. Having traveled to many parts of the world, Ben quickly realized that knowing the language of sports allows you to communicate with anyone in the world. He has dedicated his life to serving people and believes that sport is a very powerful way to help make a difference. Ben enjoys fly fishing, cycling, soccer, playing guitar and also serves as the Chaplain for the Portland Timbers. He is happily married to his wife, Jamie, and they have two boys, Nolan and Griffin.

Leading Your Organization: A Positive Coaching Culture
Double Goal Coach: Coaching for Winning and Life Lessons
This establishes PCA’s premise that youth and high school sports entail the goal of winning and the more important goal of teaching life lessons through sports. Each attendee leaves as a PCA-certified Double-Goal Coach, learning how to Coach for Mastery of port (Not Just the Scoreboard); Fill Emotional Tanks; and Honor the Game
Guides school or youth sports organization leaders (such as a board of directors) in using youth and high school sports as a Development ZoneTM to develop better athletes and better people. Attendees learn why and how to establish Positive Coaching as a cultural norm, plus they get a takeaway actionplan for implementation throughout their community of coaches, parents, athletes, officials and spectators.
KAT MERTZ
Kat Mertz is in her fifth season as head coach at the University of Oregon and is coming off her most most successful season year at the helm of the program. Mertz was named head coach at Oregon on Dec. 21, 2012, after spending the 2012 season as head coach at Saint Louis University. Mertz is the third coach in UO history since the program returned to the varsity level in 1996. Mertz brings extensive experience at the collegiate and national ranks. She has made nine NCAA Tournament appearances in five collegiate coaching stints covering 15 seasons. She has also served on the United States Women’s National Youth Team coaching staffs – where she helped guide the U-20 squad to the 2008 FIFA World Cup title – and for Olympic Development Programs. Prior to taking over at Saint Louis where she led the Billikens to a 5-9-4 record, Mertz served as an assistant coach at Texas and helped guide the Longhorns to the NCAA Tournament in 2010 and 2011. Texas placed nine student-athletes on the All-Big 12 squad and 19 on the Academic AllConference team during her tenure. A member of the U.S. Women’s National Team’s U-20 and U-18 coaching staff since 2007, Mertz helped lead the U-20 squad to the 2008 FIFA World Cup title. She was an assistant coach for the U.S. Women’s National Team’s U-15 team in its inaugural season in 2004. Mertz served as head coach of the Olympic Development Program Region IV ‘94 age group team and was the ODP Region IV assistant director of goalkeeping from 2004 to 2010. Mertz earned a bachelor’s degree in natural resources, ecosystem assessment, at North Carolina State in 1998. She holds a United States Soccer Federation “A” national coaching license and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America Advanced National Diploma.

SUSAN BOWER
Susan Bower is an Assistant Attorney General in the Charitable Activities Section at the Oregon Attorney General’s Office and a past Chair of the Nonprofit Organizations Law Section of the Oregon State Bar. She joined the Oregon Department of Justice in 2006. Prior to that, she worked as an attorney in private practice, specializing in estate and trust administration and litigation. Ms. Bower graduated from Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon and obtained her undergraduate degree in biology from Indiana University.

EDUARDO ARAUJO
Eduardo Araujo is the Director of Coaching for Rose City Futsal, where he leads its coaching staff and directs the development of youth players. Eduardo has helped RCF to establish itself among the top futsal forces in the US and has led teams to success at regional, national and international levels. Growing up in Brazil, Eduardo played for Clube de Futebol Zico (CFZ) and other national level futsal clubs during his youth. He grew up with a love for the game that he currently enjoys sharing with Rose City Futsal’s culture. His coaching philosophy emphasizes hard work, dedication, fun and the idea that lessons learned from the game extend beyond the court. He sees every training session and match as an opportunity for growth on the individual and team level. 9:00am The Role of Futsal In The Development of Soccer Players Eduardo will be discussing the prominent rise in popularity of futsal and how engaging in the sport can improve your players ability, and advancement when it comes to outdoor soccer, too.
LYNN KACHMARIK
Lynn is the founder and director of TRUE BRAND SPORTS LLC, which provides workshops around the world to improve the sport culture at the youth, high school, and collegiate level. Lynn has developed workshops on exceptional leadership, teamwork, and other topics that resonate with coaches, parents, student-athletes, and corporate executives. Lynn has served as a keynote speaker and presenter at state, national, and international conferences on the need for character-based leadership from administrators, coaches, parents, and student-athletes. Lynn was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of the International Association of Athletic Administrators and Coaches, (IAAAC). 9:00am Bullying Prevention Research reveals that children fifteen years ago were more likely to stand up to a bully than students today. Many students from middle school through high school identify student-athletes as some of the biggest bullies. This workshop discusses research on bullies and how coaches/teachers/classrooms and teams can help to change this culture and positively impact the entire school community.
10:30am Why Exceptional Leadership Matters This session examines why stepping up to exceptional coaching/ leadership/teaching is so critical and important for our students/ student-athletes. This workshop not only allows each person to identify skills they need to improve, but also helps participants identify who they surround themselves with that will continue to drive them to be a stronger exceptional leader/coach/teacher. Highly interactive!
2:30pm How To Be An Exceptional Sports Parents This session will cover all the information you need to share with your parents to change their culture in the stands, car ride home, over the top expectations and face to face meetings. More importantly, the reasons why they want to change…..they are hurting their very own child.
4:15pm Mental Toughness & Grit in Today’s Youth This session will be interactive and discuss one of the top issues facing coaches today and that is developing mental toughness and grit. Research tells us that due to how parents are parenting today, kids are not as resilient as they were 5-10 years ago, so how do you work on grit every day? How do you define grit? How do your student-athletes define grit?
DESIA BRAMEL
Desia is our Manager of Registration Services. Desia came to OYSA in 2009 with years of service as a club board member, coach, player and Mom of 2 soccer players. Desia’s passion for the sport is evident in her willingness to be there for clubs as a mentor and educator. Desia’s previous work experience included 7 years in local government and 12 years as a CPA working for large accounting firms primarily on the tax side with emphasis on Trust and Partnership returns.
2:30pm Registration Boot Camp: The Basics of Affinity Desia will be discussing the basics of Affinity and how, as a club registrar, you can utilize the system platform to the best of your ability. From digital rosters, to the club pass future, as well as all the other ins and outs of the system, Desia will run through everything you need to know to make sure all your players are registered correctly.
JOSE CAMPOS
Jose Campos is an experienced Sports Marketer born in Spain, and is currently Manager of Leagues and Tournaments for Oregon Youth Soccer Association. Jose started working for OYSA after his graduation in 2017 with the University of Oregon: Warsaw Sports Marketing Center with his MBA. At OYSA, Jose’s responsibilities include among others writing and implementing the rules for all the sponsored and managed leagues and tournaments in the state of Oregon. He is a certified coach in soccer and futsal and coaches for the Portland Thorns Regional Training Center (RTC) and Olympic Development Program (ODP) as well as futsal at Rose City Futsal. Jose’s coaching style and methodology is to develop college and professional players as a priority over winning any trophy. Jose has experience in soccer in Spain, England, China and both coasts in the US which gives him a wide knowledge and different points of view of soccer worldwide. Jose has been part of the front office of professional clubs (Sevilla FC, La Liga, Spain), semi-professional clubs (Lane United, PDL, USA) and academies (Global Premier Soccer – FC Bayern Munich, USA and Teng Football Academy, China) which gives him an understanding on how the executive level can help and assist our coaches and players’ development.
10:30am Latino OutReach Session Jose will be conducting our first exclusively Spanish presentation at the Annual General Meetings. We’ve never had an entirely Spanish class, and with the important addition of Jose on our staff, we are now able to service even more people that we did before. Jose will be covering a wide variety of topics and leaving plenty of time to discuss what YOU want to talk about, and to listen and learn how we can become better advocates for our Latino community.
BRIAN SCOTT
Brian is the Manager of Member Services for Oregon Youth Soccer. Brian received his J.D. from Northwestern School of Law at Lewis and Clark College. He received his B.A. from St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland, where he was first exposed to soccer. After moving to Oregon to attend law school, he continued his soccer activities as a player, coach, and club administrator. He has been in charge of the Member Services department since joining OYSA in 2007. As the Manager of Member Services, Brian oversees the Association’s risk management program. He was instrumental in taking background checks to an online process in 2007 and currently manages risk review of all background reports that show a history of criminal convictions.
2:30pm Background Checks: What/Why/How For Adults Brian will be discussing why OYSA requires background checks for adults. He will also cover the process of registering with the Association to obtain a background check, how checks are performed, and what happens when a report shows that a person has a conviction. This presentation will include important information about changes in the registration process that be in effect for the 18-19 seasonal year.
