ELITE
For Tenor, Keyboard, and 2 Synthesisers
ELITE for Tenor, Keyboard, and Two Synthesisers Instrumentation Tenor Electronic Keyboard Harpsichord, Piano Synthesiser 1 (Korg Polysix) 1: Clav, 2: Velocity Arp, 3: Velo Filter Lead, 4: Swell Pad* Synthesiser 2 (PPG Wave) 1: Clavibell, 2: Pluck In (Arp), 3. Sawtooth, 4: Tiny Pad* *These are the synthesisers and settings for the world premiere performance. For guidelines in the case that these synthesisers are unavailable, see Performance Directions. Duration: c. 10’ Commissioned by Filthy Lucre with funds from Arts Council England: Grants for the Arts. World premiere cond. William Cole at Filthy Lucre, Hackney Showroom, 24th February 2018.
Performance Directions: Tenor Languages: The lyrics for the vocal part transition freely between English, German, and gibberish. For clarity, lyrics in English and German appear in italics. Performance guidelines: The singer must perform this piece in an overtly smug, ‘mannered’ style, as if performing well known arias to an older, upperclass audience. The singer must remain in character throughout the performance, including during their entrance, exit, and when receiving applause. The only exception to this rule is for the final movement, ‘DEATHPLAYER’. For this movement, the singer may lapse out of character. Costume: If possible, the singer should appear in black tie, or otherwise smartly dressed. Pronunciation: Here is a list of letters, and how they must be pronounced, during the gibberish sections: ‘a’ - as in ‘back’ ‘e’ - as in ‘pet’ ‘i’ - as in ‘sit’ ‘o’ - as in ‘mop’ ‘u’ - more of an ‘oo’ sound, as in ‘cook’, ‘book’ ‘y’ - as in ‘silly’ ‘c’ - more of a ‘ts’ sound, as in ‘cats’ ‘kh’ - at the back of the throat, as in ‘Bach’ ‘q’ - a hard ‘c’ sound, as in ‘back’ ‘r’ - always rolled, as found in Italian and Russian ‘x’ - always a ‘ks’ sound, even when found at the beginning of a word

Performance Directions: Synthesisers Synthesiser specifications: All specifications in score apply to the synthesisers used for the world premiere performance (Korg Polysix and PPG Wave). In the case that these synthesisers cannot be used, the following sound settings will be sufficient. The following applies to both synthesiser parts. Setting 1: ‘Plucked’, harpsichord-like sounds. Setting 2: Arp, moving from bottom to top, and to the durations specified in the score. Setting 3: Harsh, square lead sound. Setting 4: Swelling, string-like sound. Dynamics must be adjusted in accordance with both the score, and the ‘swell’ of the setting. Dynamics: All dynamics are to be achieved through the use of a Volume Pedal. The dynamics for ‘DEATHPLAYER’ in the Synth 1 part are uniform because the crescendo and diminuendo occur naturally from the Swell Pad. Arps: All use of Arp settings includes a small stave indicating the music ‘as heard’ above the normal stave (which indicates the music ‘as executed’).
Programme Note ELITE is about the communal vocabularies constructed in so-called ‘high art’ cultural traditions, and their contribution to the annexation of these traditions. It is written both in disgust at the self-satisfied faux-grandiosity and opulence of the scene that we work in, and in recognition of the composer’s, performers’, and audiences’ complicity. ELITE includes three arias by Mozart, Purcell, and Monteverdi, whose texts and musical material have been mangled beyond recognition. All of the musical and textual vocabularies in this piece have been constructed from the dismembered parts of these arias. Contents 1. 2. 3. 4.
