Se va el GOAT: Tom Brady anuncia su retiro

Veinte años como titular, 10 Super Bowls jugados, 7 ganados, 5 MVPs del Super Bowl, 18 títulos divisiona-les. 35 victorias en playoffs, 243 victorias totales, 710 pases de Touchdown, 97,569 yardas, 8,429 pases completos, 9 volteretas en el último cuarto en playoffs, 5 series ganadoras del Super Bowl en el último cuarto y tiempo extra.

Esas son algunas de las estadísticas que Tom Brady acumuló en sus 22 años de carrera. En todas, es el primer lugar en la historia de la NFL.

Tras 20 temporadas en Nueva Inglaterra y 2 en Tampa, Brady decidió por fin dar por terminada su magnífica carrera a los 44 años, algo nunca visto. Lo mejor de todo, es que lo hizo bajo sus propios términos, y ese “precipicio” nunca llegó. Nunca bajó el nivel, nunca apestó, siempre estuvo en la élite de la liga desde el primer año como titular hasta el último. En su último año lideró la liga en Touchdowns, yardas y pases completos, terminará top 3 en el MVP, y le dio a los Bucs su 1º título divisional en 14 años.

Sin duda podría haber seguido jugando, pero su familia y sus otros negocios por fin pudieron más que su amor número uno: el futbol americano.

Podríamos enumerar sin parar los momentos icónicos de su carrera: el regreso en la nieve ante los Rai-ders en el infame juego de la “Tuck Rule”; la serie ganadora ante el “Mejor Show en Turf”, en su 1º temporada de titular, para ganar el Super Bowl 36 a pesar de que John Madden sugirió poner rodilla en tie-rra; cuando lo hizo de nuevo dos años después para ganar el Super Bowl 38; los 21 partidos invictos consecutivos que siguen siendo un récord; su 3º anillo en 4 años dejando a Peyton, Big Ben y McNabb en el camino; la temporada de 16-0 con récords de touchdowns y su 1º MVP; su primer partido tras rom-perse todos los ligamentos de la rodilla, en televisión nacional, para ganarlo con dos touchdowns en el último minuto; su temporada 2010 cuando fue el primer MVP unánime en la historia; sus más de 5 mil yardas para alcanzar el Super Bowl en 2011; su increíble partido ante Cincinnati cuando 6 días antes lo querían retirar tras un mal partido ante Kansas City; el regreso de 10 puntos en el último cuarto ante la legión del BOOM; una de las mejores defensivas de la historia, para ganar su 1º título en 10 años; su regreso de un 28-3 en contra en el Super Bowl LI, el más grande en la historia del deporte; su partido ante Jacksonville en el campeonato de Conferencia, con 10 puntadas en la palma de la mano lanzadora, regresando de 10 puntos en el último cuarto; la hazaña en tiempo extra en Kansas City con su 8º juego por el campeonato consecutivo; cuando se fue a Tampa y volvió a la franquicia más perdedora en las 4 grandes ligas del país, campeones en su 1º año, y en casa; o su último partido, abajo 27-3, empatándolo pero perdiéndolo con una patada en el último segundo ante los Rams, igual que comenzó todo.

Gracias por todo, Tom. El mejor de la historia se va, y la NFL no será la misma sin él.

Twenty years as a starter, 10 Super Bowls played, 7 won, 5 Super Bowl MVPs, 18 division titles, 35 playoff wins, 243 total wins, 710 touchdown passes, 97,569 yards, 8,429 completions, 9 comebacks in the fourth quarter in the playoffs, 5 Super Bowl winning drives in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Those are some of the stats that Tom Brady accumulated in his 22-year career. In all of them, he’s first place in the history of the NFL.

After 20 seasons in New England and 2 in Tampa, Brady finally decided to end his magnificent career at 44 years old, something never seen before. Best of all, he did it on his own terms, and that "cliff" never came. He never lowered the level, he never sucked, he was always in the league’s elite from year one as a starter until the last. In his final year he led the league in touchdowns, yards, and completions, finished top 3 for MVP, and gave the Bucs their 1st division title in 14 years.

Sure, he could have kept playing, but his family and other businesses finally got the better of his number one love: football.

We could endlessly list the iconic moments of his career: the snow comeback against the Raiders in the infamous “Tuck Rule” game; the winning series against “Best Show on Turf”, in his 1st starting season, to win Super Bowl 36 despite John Madden suggesting taking a knee; when he did it again two years later to win Super Bowl 38; the 21 consecutive undefeated games that remain a record; his 3rd ring in 4 years leaving Peyton, Big Ben and McNabb on the way; his 16-0 season with touchdown records and his 1st MVP; his first game after tearing all the ligaments in his knee, on national tv, to win it with two touch-downs in the last minute; his 2010 season when he was the first unanimous MVP in history; his 5,000+ yards to reach the Super Bowl in 2011; his incredible game against Cincinnati when 6 days before they wanted to retire him after a bad game against Kansas City; the 10-point comeback in the last quarter against the legion of BOOM, one of the best defenses in history, to win his 1st title in 10 years; his comeback from a 28-3 deficit in Super Bowl LI, the biggest in sports history; his game against Jacksonville in the AFC championship, with 10 stitches in the palm of his throwing hand, coming back from 10 points in the fourth quarter; the feat in overtime at Kansas City in his 8th straight championship game; when he went to Tampa and turned to the losingest franchise in the 4 major American leagues, champions in his 1st year, and at home; or his last game, down 27-3, tying it but losing it on a last-second kick to the Rams, just like it all started.

Thanks for everything Tom. The best in history is gone, and the NFL won't be the same without him.
