SIPPO Swiss Import Promotion Programme. SIPPO, the Swiss Import Promotion Programme, is a mandate of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, SECO, within the framework of its economic development cooperation. It is carried out by Osec, the official Swiss foreign trade promotion agency. The programme helps SMEs in developing and transition countries to gain access to the Swiss and European markets by providing information, training courses and other matchmaking services. SIPPO also assists importers from Switzerland and the European Union with finding suitable partners and high-quality products from selected developing and transition countries.
The programme has five main goals: • To
inform the Swiss and European import economy about new
market sources • To
strengthen trade institutions and business sector associa-
tions in the trade promotion process • To
increase the competitiveness of SMEs in selected partner
countries • To
develop the manufacturing and exporting skills of SMEs in
selected partner countries • To
establish qualified trade contacts between SMEs from
emerging markets and markets in transition and the Swiss and European import economy Osec Swiss Import Promotion Programme Stampfenbachstrasse 85, P.O. Box 2407 CH-8021 Zurich, Switzerland Phone +41 44 365 52 76, Fax +41 44 365 52 02 mmoine@osec.ch www.sippo.ch 4

communities and previously marginalised entrepreneurs. The presence of South African small and medium-sized tourism enterprises at the TTW aims to encourage Swiss outbound tour operators and travel agents to support responsible tourism in South Africa by supporting the local economy, hosting communities and enhancing visitors’ experience. FTTSA is the world’s first and still only Fair Trade certification programme for tourism enterprises. The label guarantees that FTTSA-certified tourism products are committed to operating in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. FTTSA will be using the international stage of the TTW to cater for the increasing number of Swiss travellers that are aware of the social, cultural, economic and ecological impacts of tourism on development – a fact that can and should indeed no longer be ignored by Switzerland’s traditional tour operators to South Africa. South Africa is globally recognised as a leader in the growing field of responsible tourism and FTTSA is at the forefront of this movement. Hopefully more Swiss travellers will join in and look for FTTSA-certified products while on holiday or travelling for business to South Africa. 5
