ʻKEEPING IT SIMPLEʼ & ʻJUST IN TIME INVENTORYʼ CREATE OPPORTUNITY

Two consistent rules to success, “Keep It Simple” and “Just In Time Inventory,” have become the common denominator this year for Ashley Entertainment and their Spectrum brand of musical instruments. “Bringing in product from China via Long Beach and then shipping it across the country to Florida only to ship it back to customers distribution centers caused inefficiencies throughout our distribution system,” stated Richard Borden, CEO of Ashley Entertainment Corporation. Hence the company’s relocation to Henderson, Nev., where a state-of-

ETYMOTICʼS ETYBLU2 BLUETOOTH HEADSET DELIVERS BEST-IN-CLASS NOISE REDUCTION AND COMFORT

Etymotic’s etyBLU2™ Bluetooth® headset delivers the clearest conversations of any Bluetooth headset on the market today. The clarity of the etyBLU2 headset is due to its ACCU·Noise Reduction™ Technology that reduces noise by more than 30 dB at both the microphone and the earpiece, providing “best-in-class” speech intelligibility and overall conversational clarity for both parties. The etyBLU2 continues to attract new users to Bluetooth technology and has reconnected many seasoned Bluetooth users who have been previously disappointed by the claims of other

Bluetooth devices. Despite signal processing schemes in some sophisticated headsets, proximity of the microphone to the mouth and noise-isolation in the ear remain the two key elements to successful communication in noise. Clear, private communication that does not require repetition or increased vocal effort on either end of the conversation is mandatory for today’s mobile phone user. The etyBLU2’s noise-canceling microphone picks up the talker’s voice within a narrow range and rejects background noise that comes from outside that range. The combination of an

ABLE PLANET DEMONSTRATES PRODUCTS FOR HIGH-END AUDIO PERFORMANCE 22

Friday, Januar y 7, 2011

With what could be described as a triple play, Able Planet will introduce their three 2011 CES Design and Engineering Award Winners to the show this year. Bringing their extensive patented technology-based product line-up to CES, attendees to the Able Planet booth 14616 located in Central Hall will be greeted by a two-story banner featuring an impressive list of their prestigious awards, earning more than 30, since their inaugural year here at CES in 2006. The ideal performance for high-end audio is the accurate reproduction of the “Live” experience. Winner of the prized “Best in PKG (Con’t. from p. 1)

AP: I think that there are several things in combination that make PKG unique. The first one being that we are our target demographic. We use our own products and aren’t trying to build something for a demographic that we know nothing about. The second is that we pull our designs―the fabrics, forms and overall product inspirations―from the fashion, music and art subcultures. So the styling of the product gets equal attention to the technical functionality, and we end up with very unique materials, colourways and form factors. The third is that our products have a very short lifecycle. We typically change up fabrics and colourways every three to four months, so consumers always have something in season, and retailers have the opportunity to show something new and refresh the sales floor every quarter. CEDN: How did art and music become a source of inspiration for the brand?

AP: Our family has been involved in the audio business for over 40 years. And when you look at who is setting the fashion trends these days, the worlds of fashion, art and music are very intertwined. These subcultures are our demographic and are filled with people that strive for individuality and are always pushing the envelope from a creative standpoint. So it was natural to look to them for inspiration when we started developing PKG products. CEDN: What types of tech accessory trends should we look out for?

You don’t need a PKG logo to know it’s a PKG product.

CEDN: What do you anticipate to be your greatest challenge in 2011?

MP: I think the economy will continue to be a challenge. With the change in the economy will come a change in buying habits and how/where consumers spend their money. Also, as we expand internationally and open up more to global markets, there will be the challenge of understanding the needs and nuances of those markets better than our competitors.

One of the great things about this market is that the hardware that we design accessories for is always expanding and changing. CEDN: Tell our readers why PKG has decided to take part in this year’s Consumers Electronics Show.

MP: CE retailers are vital in connecting consumers with digital technology, and accessories create a great high-margin add-on sale. There’s no better place than CES to get in front of CE buyers. handset manufacturer to have integrated support for ANT+ technology. This will be introduced in the Xperia™ X8, Xperia™ X10 mini, and Xperia™ X10 mini pro through software upgrades in Q1 2011. Several future Sony Ericsson Android™ devices will also support ANT+ technology, making it possible to connect to a large number of commercial health and fitness products. This will extend your Sony Ericsson handset to become the main hub for fitness and health activities, as well as communication and entertainment. Pioneer and Yellow Digital Health are showcasing the first-ever bike computer with 3G connectivity. A Qualcomm chipset inside the Pioneer computer provides the 3G connectivity. Verizon enables the 3G

network access and Yellow has designed the software backend that collects and transfers data (heart rate, and bike speed, cadence and power) to the Internet. All of this interconnectivity is possible with the ultra low power nRF24AP2 ANT chip by Nordic Semiconductor. Texas Instruments has just announced their ANT + Bluetooth® aggregator for health and fitness applications. This is the first single chip solution to allow customers to get ANT data to standard devices, such as cell phones and PCs over a Bluetooth connection. At CES, TI will show sensor data (weight scale, blood pressure, pulse oximeter) transferring to this aggregator over ANT+, then transferring to a laptop via Bluetooth.

A&D Medical of Japan has recently launched their telehealth suite of sensors enabled by ANT+. They have long been the preeminent worldwide supplier of wireless blood pressure cuffs and weight scales to the telehealth system integrators and are now very proud to add an ANTbased pedometer to their offering of ANT+ devices. Many of the telehealth applications you will see at the ANT+ pavilion will be powered by A&D sensors. They also will showcase their new iPhone application enabled by fellow ANT+ member, Wahoo Fitness. Consumer Electronics Daily News EVENING EXTRA Cobra Digital (Con’t. from p. 1)

digital imaging business?

WP: We have taken advantage of the consumer looking for lower cost products during these difficult economic times and have increased our sales volume considerably in 2010. With the help of technology advances, we have been able to keep our prices low while adding features and performance to our products. We have always offered digital cameras with significant value and lower cost compared with Japanesebranded cameras but this is even more important for us to accomplish in today’s market. Our products sell in retail and catalogues that target the cost-conscious consumer such as Kmart, Kohl’s, Sears, Meyer’s, Hammacher Schlemer, Front Gate, Amway, Seventh Avenue, Fingerhut, QVC, Amazon and many more. Our goal is to provide the highest value, quality and performance at the lowest price, and without our attention to the changes in technology, we would not have been able to accomplish the task. We expect 2011 to be a very exciting year with consumer confidence coming back strongly for affordable and higher technology camera products.

CEDN: What new technology are you incorporating into your 2011 product line?

WP: We have added a number of fun and very useful features and products into our 2011 product line. We are introducing new 16 megapixel cameras, full HD high definition video cameras and a very exciting new line of portable scanners. New features such as face recognition will identify the faces of our customer’s grandchildren, anti-shake functions will improve image quality and direct upload of videos to YouTube and other sites and more fun.

My favorite feature is our new large touchscreen displays which controls the camera functions at a single touch or with the swipe of a finger will glide the pictures that have been captured across the display, one after the other.

For the productivity-conscientious, our new line of portable scanners, is unique with features and productivity tools found nowhere else and perfect for many different users including the road warrior, the desk-bound, the hobbyist and the young explorer. CEDN: How about new products for 2011? What can you share with us?

WP: Lots of new products and I encourage your readers to stop by our CES booth in the South Hall 4 upper level, booth 35401 at the top of the escalators, for a close-up look and get personal experience with our new digital imaging products. In addition to a number of new digital still and HD video cameras that I mentioned before, we are introducing the first 3 in 1 Digital Imaging Scanner which can operate on its own without the need of a computer connection. We also have exciting new miniature cameras in sunglasses, pens and sports camera forms that are perfect for business, home

or outdoor use.

We are also introducing new wireless Wi-Fi and direct to Internet IP security cameras that solve the problem of how to place them in difficult to wire locations indoor or outdoor and also can be contacted directly via an iPad, iPod or other mobile phone or through Skype from anywhere in the world to see if Fido is on the couch, to see if children or elderly are safe or to act as a deterrent to unwanted non-guests.

CEDN: Over the last several years, we have seen the Mega Pixel [mpx] rating of digital cameras continually increase. Where do you think it will go from here?

WP: Good question. In 2009 it was 8 and 10mpx, in 2010 it has been 12mpx. I think that it is possible for the Mega Pixel (mpx) ratings to continue to go up, and we are introducing 16 megapixel cameras for 2011 but I am not so sure that it makes any sense for the average photographer. Most photo processors will tell you that a great 4x6 or 5x7 inch printed picture can be made from a 5mpx camera. Also, today, it is not easy for most average photographers to e-mail or transmit via the Internet a file much larger than 3 or 5mpx and the larger megapixel files just take up more memory space on SD cards, hard drives or other storage devices. So unless the average photographer is planning on printing large posters or billboards, today’s 12mpx cameras are far more than enough and most photographers should only need the 5mpx setting of that 12mpx camera. This being said, we are still offering 16mpx cameras since many end users still think more is better.

CEDN: Has your customer been looking for HD video cameras?

WP: In 2010, we have sold far more regular resolution digital video cameras, and I think the same will happen for 2011, but we also offer exceptional HD high definition video cameras in our product line and this part of our business has been growing. I think as more consumers buy new HD flatscreen TV sets, we will see the demand moving more to the HD video cameras. Today, however, a lot of consumers are asking themselves if the added cost of the newer HD cameras is worth it, especially since video uploads to YouTube and other social sites need the lower resolution, not HD, and the HD files can get to be very large requiring more memory space and allowing only shorter video time length. This being said, however, we are still offering a number of full HD1080P, 720P and D1 video cameras in our 2011 product line. devices is also impacting how consumers perceive the devices they have, and the choices they make―specifically, which shutter to press to capture their digital memories. The rising use of smartphones to take photos and videos illustrates the importance of sharing as a part of capturing memories. These users are sometimes willing to compromise camera advantages like speed, action or lowlight performance, or zoom-ability for a connected experience. However, sharing itself has changed in nature, and we now live an era where more devices have WiFi, 3G or even 4G built in. digital imaging industry is poised like never before to make the photo taking, viewing and sharing experience richer and more seamless. Alan Bullock of InfoTrends points out: “The connectivity built into many mobile devices enables instant sharing of the moments of people’s everyday lives. Most digital cameras still take better pictures than most camera phones, but without connectivity, sharing takes place later, after the excitement of the moment has passed.” This window of opportunity is short, and letting it pass by affects the relevance of the content, negatively impacting the motivation to share. And that, Alan notes, affects the way consumers perceive their digital camera, adding, “Cameras without connectivity may soon be relegated to planned picture-taking events instead of a must-carry accessory.”

So how is Digital Imaging evolving into Connected Imaging? Led by efforts from both major camera brands, as well as start-ups like wireless memory card maker Eye-Fi, consumers can now automatically back up and organize their content right from their camera. Connectivity allows us to do the most fundamental thing, which is to get those memories out of the camera as easily, as automatically, as possible so they can be saved or shared immediately. As new technology is being introduced, the experience from photo taking to viewing and sharing the memories is more connected and offers the flexibility consumers have come to expect. An example of this is Direct Mode, which Eye-Fi introduced at CES, empowering users to transfer the lifelike images taken with their digital camera to their mobile device, where they can leverage the high

definition screen, touch interface, and pervasive connectivity to view and share newly created memories. Eye-Fi will be demonstrating this new capability at CES at booth 3614 in the “Living in Digital Times” section of the North Hall. More information is also available at www.eye.fi.
