NEXT GEN AUDIO SYSTEMS THAT PLAY WIRELESSLY FROM COMPUTERS AND SMARTPHONES—MADE POSSIBLE WITH SUPERSTREAMHD TECHNOLOGY FROM BLACKFIRE RESEARCH Imagine being able to play music from your notebook, smartphone, or tablet directly to ‘smart’ speakers over Wi-Fi without any other equipment. All the electronic components necessary (amps, dacs, network processors, audio CPUs, etc.) for playing music are built into the speaker. No dongles, adapters, controllers, or additional components are needed. Now imagine doing this while dramatically increasing music quality.
That’s what Blackfire Research has done with its Smart Networked Audio Systems with SuperStreamHD technology. “Blackfire Research … the Wi-Fi we’ve been waiting for” CNET 30 Days of Innovation Home audio customers have been hoping for years for speakers that would not require wires that run around the floor or require opening a wall to hide them. So much so, that wireless speakers

have long been considered the Holy Grail of audio technology. But consumers have been frustrated by faulty products plagued with problems: reliability, interruptions, stereo speakers out of sync, limited range. No doubt about it, playing music reliably and in sync to different speakers wirelessly is extremely technically challenging. Another advancement that home audio consumers have been waiting for is the marrying of computer audio sources with home stereo systems. With online music accounting for the fastest-growing

ALIBABA.COM HELPS BRING PRODUCT IDEAS TO LIFE Have a great idea for a new consumer technology product or accessory? Not sure how to take your idea and turn it into a product? This is exactly the problem Tony Lee, President of Brad-Lee Innovations, found himself with in 2009. Lee invented the Hand-E-Pod, a colorful cylinder with a zinc ball-head that easily screws into the tripod mount of virtually any digital camera or camcorder and allows the user to hold the device more securely without obscuring
the camera’s flash. In addition, the Hand-E-Pod’s hollow design lets the user store items such as memory cards and extra batteries. To get his idea off the ground, Lee used an online search engine where he found Alibaba.com (South Hall booth 20753), the world’s largest business-tobusiness online marketplace. Lee quickly learned that using Alibaba.com took out the logistical problems of finding manufacturers overseas. “Alibaba.com aligned
us directly with the most reputable suppliers and made it possible for our business to transition from an idea to a reality. The website is amazing,” said Lee. He found that Alibaba.com was very easy to navigate and helpful for a firsttime user. “The website is very intuitive and efficient and takes all the guesswork out of sourcing,” said Lee. “Providing good communication is an essential piece of working with an overseas company and all of the manufacturers that we found through Alibaba.com have impressed us over and over again.” With the current economic climate Continued on Page 41

ACHIEVING A MORE SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION ONE STEP AT A TIME The need to be “green” is sweeping every industry, making consumer electronics providers think hard about how to apply sustainability into their products and supply chain. In the U.S. sales of “green” technology products neared $104 million1 in 2009. And while some providers may be finding opportunities to meet consumers’ “green needs”—a simple and effective way to accomplish this is to modify your packaging. For those companies that simply find the right packaging partner, the rewards and benefits of effective, well-designed packaging can extend from reduced energy consumption all the way to brand enhancement. The right partner will ensure your needs are met from manufacturing to in-store presence, and ensure a high level of environmental responsibility at each step. For instance, excessive packaging is easily avoided by applying expertise in engineering, materials science and package design; and paperboard that is made from fiber sourced from a sustainably managed forest. Developing a package that uses the right substrate can also help avoid tertiary packaging which in turn reduces weight during transportation and helps lower emissions and maximize shipping loads. Let’s apply this to one example we all love to hate: the plastic clamshell. Plastic clamshell packages are a staple in
the consumer packaged goods industry for products such as electronic gadgets and ink cartridges. And while they are nearly impossible to open safely and calmly, they don’t promote the brand or communicate important product information effectively. They are also made from a nonrenewable resource; however, they continue to dominate the retail shelves. To really get to the core of the issue—which is preventing theft and lightening the burden on consumers and the environment—MWV developed Natralock. It’s security packaging solution made with Sustainable Forestry Initiative-certified paperboard (i.e., supporting protection of forests, responsible procurement and promoting biodiversity) and utilizes the minimal amount of plastic needed to display the product—in fact, on average Natralock uses 70 percent less plastic than traditional plastic clamshells. By leveraging MWV’s expertise in properties of different materials and how they can be designed and manufactured, MWV was able to develop a tear-resistant paperboard (i.e., security feature), seal the package using using about 1/3 of the energy needed for traditional RF sealing plastic clamshells, and make it less—much less—for consumers to open at home by making the Continued on Page 109
ENERGIZER ACKNOWLEDGES GROWING CONSUMER POWER NEEDS WITH NEW ENERGI TO GO POWER SOLUTION The proliferation of smartphones has led an increasing number of people to depend on mobile devices for much more than just making phone calls, and with that shift comes a vastly increased demand for portable power. Energizer, a leader in innovative power solutions, is making it easier for people to use smartphones to their fullest potential with the introduction of the AP1201 for iPhone 4. This rechargeable case with built-in battery supplies nearly twice the power of the iPhone, while offering protection that you never need to remove, providing a continuous power source. With 50 million iPhones sold to date*, and more than 1.7 million iPhone 4 phones sold just days after it was introduced**, these devices have become popular for playing games, music and video, and running mobile applications that do everything from global positioning to balancing finances. The AP1201 eliminates the need for iPhone 4 users to curb their usage or to avoid powerdraining applications, and will keep the device charged throughout the day, a long flight or even an overnight trip. “Energizer appreciates the value and utility that smartphones offer consumers, and also sees that the average consumer’s power requirements have been underestimated,” said Jim Olsen, Vice President of Marketing for Energizer North America. “The AP1201 is a direct response to the power deficit that many experience, and is just one of a full line of Energizer
Energi To Go solutions that is bringing convenient power to consumers, and that is making mobility easier for them.” The AP1201 has “smart” battery technology that auto senses the iPhone 4 battery power status which is indicated through “hidden” LEDs on the back of the case. For efficient power management, two charging options provide either high speed quick charge direct to the iPhone 4, or get simultaneous pass-through charging of the iPhone and AP1201 case. The AP1201 is rechargeable up to 500 times and comes with a USB charging cable. The AP1201 is a one-piece case, manufactured with form-fitting recycled silicone rubber that is durable, extremely thin and lightweight. The low profile case is silky smooth to the touch, yet non-slip and fingerprint-resistant. The AP1201 also features an integrated bumper that eliminates the signal loss and antennae interference issues that many iPhone 4 users have experienced. Through the use of patented lithium polymer battery technology, the AP1201 extends battery life of standby time, Internet, music, video and talk time, providing nearly twice the power of the iPhone 4. The Energizer AP1201 is available now for an MSRP of $69.99 at major retailers nationwide. For more information, visit www.chargeyouriphone.com or www.facebook.com/energizer. LASERS LIGHT UP A POSSIBLE FUTURE FOR GAMING THATʼS MORE REAL AND INTENSE While major gaming platforms are focused on 3D and controller-free gaming, MicroVision and its Project Tuatara collaborators Intel and Capcom are taking the first steps toward infinite reality gaming by showing how game play can break free from the fixed screen. Project Tuatara delivers immersive movement to the PC gaming experience far beyond what consoles offer today. The prototype gun is a battery-operated, wireless HD video projection display and wireless controller that projects high-definition displays on any surface imaginable—no monitor or TV screen required. Gamers can now experience first-person shooter or third-person perspective video games all around them. The walls, ceiling and floor are now part of the action as gamers point the gun up to see the sky, and spin around to see what’s behind them. “Infinite reality gaming is much more realistic and exciting because gamers are free to roam and physically experience fantasy environments as if they were in them,” said Michael Fritts, Vice President of Sales, Marketing and
Business Development, MicroVision. “While Project Tuatara is a conceptual prototype, new iOS 4 games are delivering new levels of movement that enable consumers to experience infinite reality using our laser pico projector SHOWWX+.” The design of the new Project Tuatara gun is based on a bullpup rifle that is lighter and easier to operate, and includes more programmable buttons. MicroVision’s PicoP® display engine, the same one in the recently released SHOWWX+™ laser pico projector, is embedded below the rifle’s sights, and uses lasers and a single scanning mirror to cast a large, vivid, HD image that is always in focus with none of the rainbow artifact of other ultra-miniature projection technologies. When combined with a powerful PC running Intel Core i7 Processor Extreme Edition and one of the most visually arresting games in the world—“Lost Planet 2” for the PC—Project Tuatara gives gamers an immersive and intense experience without compromising frame rates or system performance.

NEW CANADIAN ENTREPRENEURIAL VENTURE EXPANDS BY CATERING TO A NEW DEMOGRAPHIC IN TECH BAGS AND ACCESSORIES What does your laptop bag say about you? According to the majority of tech accessory companies, it says: you’re a mid-level, middle-aged exec who prioritizes function over fashion―essentially you’re “basic and boring.” Founded by Canadian brothers Andy and Mike Priestman in 2009, PKG (www.nice-pkg.com) was built upon 40 years of experience, hard work and passion from their family’s distribution company Precor Consumer Electronics. The PKG brand offers a full line of digital carrying accessories and in just one short year has successfully decked out more than 20,000 consumers in fashionable, affordable and unique tech bags and accessories through retailers such as Future Shop, Best Buy, HMV, as well as independent lifestyle retailers, all the while managing to keep their grassroots, subculture appeal. By catering to a younger demographic of style-savvy business professionals who express themselves through personal style, PKG has grown their sales substantially within the past year. “PKG is inspired by a lifestyle,” said Andy
Priestman, Co-founder and Director of Brand Development. “As opposed to making a product that tries to suit the tastes of everyone, we wanted to focus on a specific demographic, focusing on providing accessible luxury. We’ve pulled inspiration from the young influencers, fashion insiders and indie music and urban artists who are really at the ground level.” PKG satisfies a hugely growing need in the marketplace for differentiated and fashionable tech accessories, by catering to a demographic that has been overlooked by other tech retailers. “I was tired of seeing black neoprene laptop sleeves and black polyester bags,” said Mike. “Then on the other hand there were these very expensive ‘specialty’ bags sold at a very limited number of retailers. There was nothing in between.” PKG tries to find the perfect balance between fashion, form, function and affordability. NEATO ROBOTICS CEO MAX SAFAI SEES BIG FUTURE FOR HOME ROBOTS CEDN: What’s your vision for Neato Robotics and the future of robotics? MS: Neato Robotics was founded on the idea that it’s possible to create robots that are smart enough to perform household chores as intelligently and efficiently as a human. We help free up consumers’ lives by making cleaning easy, thorough and convenient—giving them more time to do the things they love. In the years ahead, we’ll continue to revolutionize home care through the invention of intelligent, powerful robots that are thoughtfully innovated to address daily consumer chores.
such as cleaning windows or folding clothes, for example. Form follows function, and we anticipate service robots in the future to be more like home appliances by design. They will be optimized to perform specific household functions, and less likely to be The Jetsons’ universal robotic maid Rosie. CEDN: Has it been hard launching a new robotics start-up in this economy?
With the advent of more advanced robotic systems with increased sensory capabilities and the ability to better understand environments and ‘think’ through best scenarios—we see an opportunity to expand more broadly into other useful service functions. The most near-term possibilities include robots that provide services conventionally done manually
MS: Launching a new company engaged in the development of new technology is rarely easy, and the current economy certainly presented its own challenges. Neato Robotics is really a classic Silicon Valley start-up in the sense that a small team with limited resources has leveraged

your company. What’s your main line of business?
RP: Today our mobile devices do just about everything for us from waking us up in the morning to delivering our e-mail and keeping us informed about world events. We rely on them more and more, and we’re tied to more of them than ever before. And, since our devices have gone wireless, it only makes sense that charging them should be wireless as well. The ability to recharge without the tangle and hassle of wires is the next logical step in the continuing evolution of personal electronics. Just as the pay phone, once as ubiquitous as Starbucks coffee houses, has now gone the way of all relics, so too are power cords becoming obsolete.
RP: Powermat is a technology company focused on wireless energy. We lead the industry in wireless charging by letting consumers charge their favorite smartphones and devices with a one-time addition of a receiver that enables wireless power delivery when the device comes into contact with any Powermat. At our core, Powermat is about adding convenience and options for consumers in the way they relate to energy usage in their everyday environments. For smartphones and other handheld devices, that translates into wireless charging. But for other industries, it means greater flexibility in planning and design and support for new platforms that incorporate wireless energy technology. CEDN: Can you give me an example of another industry that is incorporating Powermat technology? RP: Sure. About a year-and-a-half ago we began working with Teknion, one of the leading international designers, manufacturers and marketers of mid- to highend office systems and furniture products to incorporate wireless technology into office furniture design. They just launched the Teknion-Powermat collection which supports office systems and furniture to act as wireless energy hubs where users can drop and charge devices on tabletops and lamp bases for wireless power delivery directly through these Powermat-enabled surfaces. It enables freedom, convenience and functionality by reducing the demand on outlets, wires and space used at a workstation. CEDN: To what do you attribute the current rise in interest in wireless charging?
Continued on Page 49
CEDN: What would you say makes your company unique? RP: Powermat didn’t invent wireless charging. We just perfected it. What’s most unique about our situation, I think, is the fact that when we started there was no wireless charging industry to speak of. We were the first to launch in this space and, in fact, we created an industry where none existed before. We pioneered the category and now lead on all fronts including technology, retail footprint, consumer experience and brand. And while many companies claim to be consumer-driven, I can honestly say that we listen to what the end customer wants and then set our agenda based on consumer feedback as opposed to trying to ‘sell’ our own ideas of what wireless energy delivery should entail. MY GAIT MAKES IT EASIER FOR SENIORS TO ACCESS THE WORLD OF COMPUTERS With the introduction of an entirely cloud-based computer to the senior market in 2009, MyGait established itself as the first company to successfully bring a consumer facing cloud computer to market. So successful were the efforts of MyGait and its Founder/CEO Jeff Hill that, in November 2010, MyGait won top honors in the Houston Business Journal’s FastTech50, awarded annually to the fastest growing technology company in Houston. In December Consumer Electronics Daily News sat down with Jeff Hill to learn more about MyGait. CEDN: So, what does MyGait do? JH: We make it easy for seniors or anyone intimidated by technology to use computers and the Internet. We provide a complete solution with hardware,
customized software and unlimited, worryfree service and support to get and keep our customers online. But ultimately it’s our friendly and patient, U.S.-based customer support team that builds the trusted relationship we enjoy with our customers and is, ultimately, the key to our success. In short, MyGait is all about the customer experience. We consider our users part of one big MyGait community, with our agents as a cross between computer technician and activities director. CEDN: We hear so much about cloud computing; what about MyGait is ‘cloud-based’?
PATHWAY INNOVATIONS ANNOUNCES HOVERCAM ʻMINIʼ OFFICE CAMERA FOR MOBILE PROFESSIONALS Building on the success of the HoverCam X series document camera products introduced at CES last year, Pathway Innovations and Technologies, Inc. (PIT), based in San Diego, Calif., is launching another unique camera product—the HoverCam Mini, a pocket-sized multifunctional camera for scanning, faxing and video presentation applications for today’s highly mobile work force. PIT is creating a whole new product category for “Office Cameras” or which it calls the “OfficeCam.” Unlike typical web cameras, point and shoot digital cameras or smartphones, Office Cameras are better suited for digital imaging and video communication needs around the office to scan clear
images of A4 sized letter documents, receipts, business cards, to capture still images and record video of objects and people and to use as a video camera with Skype™, GoToMeeting™ and other video conferencing services. In addition, the company believes that the HoverCam Mini and its accompanying software provide an easier way to prepare, file and manage expense reports. Unlike conventional scanners, the HoverCam Mini scans images and documents in a second or less and can virtually fit into any pocket. Mobile professionals can finish their expense report before a trip ends, or capture their notes and ideas with a single click. To use, simply plug the pocket-sized
VISTAQUEST INTRODUCES AFFORDABLE SPORT SERIES DIGITAL CAMERA At CES 2010 VistaQuest introduced a full-function digital weatherproof and waterproof camera which can be used for skiing, boating, hiking or just sightseeing. The VQ8920 can easily be carried in your pocket or in a purse due to its slim compact styling and you get all these features without having to break the
vacation budget. They are now further refining the camera and adding such features as image stabilization. The well-designed VQ8920 Sport Series wonder promises a land and sea camera worthy of its much higher-priced competition. Whether someone chooses a

Moving forward, we recognize that the user interface is going to play an increasingly important role in the user-robot relationship, and in order for it to be a rewarding experience in the long run, it needs to be executed properly. CEDN: How has business been since you began shipping units last year? MS: Initial demand exceeded our best expectations, which is always a pleasant
Wednesday, Januar y 5, 2011 JH: Everything, basically. The MyGait Computer is a thin client desktop computer whose sole function is to launch a customized Web interface to access MyGait’s cloud-based operating system and software programs―all hosted and run in our data centers. Our customers simply want a computer that works. They don’t care if programs are running in the box in front of them or on the moon as long as, when they turn the computer on, it works. In fact, being cloud-based solves the most common computing headaches for seniors― namely protection from viruses, unneeded software downloads and data loss. With everything run and stored in the cloud very little can go wrong on the PC. That’s why we call it ‘Failure free and worry free computing.’ CEDN: Where can I get one for my parents? JH: Last year we sold direct-toconsumer exclusively through ad placement in national publications targeting

seniors [AARP, Reader’s Digest, Parade, etc.]. In the last five months, we have pushed hard to penetrate retail with very promising results. Partnering with SeniorCircuits has been a major breakthrough for us. Selling into retail as a product within a category rather than a line extension has made a huge difference. The entire line-up of SeniorCircuits products are on display at the Silvers Summit. CEDN: So what’s new this year? JH: We are excited to introduce two new products at the show―The MyGait Elite [retail $799], which features an integrated DVD player, and the MyGait TV Box [retail $499], which brings the MyGait experience into the living room. We are also delighted to announce the launch of MyGait’s Community Gaming Network and InterActive Radio for Seniors. These programs will provide a rich source of daily [inter]activity for our customers. For live demos of both, come by booth 3313.

vacation to a tropical isle or a “staycation” in his own hometown, having an allweather waterproof camera eliminates a lot of nightmare situations that can ruin special occasions. Recreation enthusiasts no longer have to fear rain at the parade or the kids’ ballgames, and they won’t have to miss the flora and fauna in a misty rainforest. Detailed images are ensured with the 8MP resolution and an 8x digital zoom with smile detection and a flash that the user can control. Photographers can use
up to an 8GB SD card for ample storage while the 2.4inch LCD screen permits easy viewing all the way down to its maximum depth of 10 feet. Top those features with the ability to record video and an MSRP of $99, these colorful (red, blue, green and purple) and sturdy waterproof digitals can provide some fun and excitement whether the photo-buff is a diver, a boater, or an adventurer who wants to forget about the environment and forge his own adventures.

HYUNDAIʼS BLUE LINK MAKES YOUR LIFE EASIER Barry Ratzlaff, Director, Hyundai Motor America, reflects on his company’s success. CEDN: How has Hyundai succeeded in a challenging economy when so many other automakers have slowed down? BR: Hyundai’s success starts with our cars. We’ve focused on year-over-year quality improvements, clearly emerging as a leader in this category. Our commitment to improving fuel economy places us among the leaders in miles-per-gallon, and we’re the only car company to commit to 50 mpg corporate average fuel economy by 2025. But cars are an emotional product, and what really drives emotional impact is design. Our newest models—Tucson, Sonata and Elantra—feature a new design direction called fluidic sculpture that is really driving new buyers into showrooms.
CEDN: Tell us about your new telematics product debuting at CES? BR: Simply put, Blue Link® makes your life easier. From its intuitive interface, smart packaging, and unique feature set, we believe it affords drivers more connectivity and access to information than any solution on the market today. BLUETOOTH AUDIO TESTING JUST GOT FASTER AND EASIER CES, Las Vegas, January 2011 sees the launch of the world’s first complete audio test system for Bluetooth devices. Prism Sound’s award-winning dScope Series III audio analyzer now supports audio streaming directly between test system and Bluetooth device, enabling real-time, closed-loop testing of Bluetooth audio systems. Up until now, audio engineers would need to test Bluetooth devices using a range of analogue, digital, electronic and electroacoustic audio test equipment, plus software-based signal generation and analysis tools. This was both timeconsuming and cumbersome, and did not
easily translate to automated manufacturing or verification testing environments. The dScope Series III test system integrates analogue, digital (S/PDIF and I2S), electronic, electroacoustic and Bluetooth measurement capabilities in a single instrument, eliminating the need for time-consuming signal generation and analysis in external software. With dScope Series III, Bluetooth audio development, compliance testing and manufacturing is now faster and easier than ever before. Prism Sound is a UK-based audio engineering specialist that supplies audio test and measurement instruments to
MAXXSONICS CELEBRATES A DECADE OF SUCCESS We sat down with Alden Stiefel, CEO of Maxxsonics USA in Lake Zurich, Ill. “Maxxsonics is celebrating its 10th year of business this year. It’s been a very successful 10 years, and we’ve managed to navigate ourselves through these very tough economic times,” Stiefel said. “Our core industry competency, car audio products, has seen many of our competitors downsize, have financial problems and, to some extent, go away. Our continued growth and success is based on supporting our sales partners,
acquisitions and product development. “Starting with Hifonics and Crunch in 2001, we acquired Autotek in 2004 and then acquired MB Quart in 2005. So with four brands we address separate segments of the car amplifier, subwoofer and speaker categories. Through our brands we can address price, performance, brand heritage, and of course, distribution.” Stiefel continued: “Each year we introduce new products for each brand to keep the distribution fresh. At this year’s WCES we are introducing approximately

Our goal is to address each distribution channel independently with some unique products. We now sell the major Internet companies direct. This allows us to have a better relationship with these customers instead of always battling price. This channel obviously will continue to grow and we now authorize select sites. We are also launching a non-Internet line of Hifonics to support our brick and mortar customers so
we cover the gamut of distribution support. “Lastly, we understand the need to ensure consumer loyalty and confidence, so in November we launched a program for the consumer called ‘Maxx Plan’ to purchase extended warranties on our amplifier products. Overall, the continued key to our success is to support our selling partners, innovative product design, and supporting the consumer.” Maxxsonics is located in the Hilton tower, suite 2935, Thursday through Saturday. Using Neer, you can easily, effortlessly and securely let one another know where you are. It’s your own white picket fence; it’s your world and only those you invite can play behind it. “Our thunderbolt came from the original idea to build this app to help our friends and families to help keep track of each other,” said Ian Heidt,
Director Services Strategy at QSL. “Now, with the serious consequences of distracted driving, Neer is even more relevant. I don’t have to take my eyes off the road to let my wife know I’m on the way home, headed to pick up our two young kids, or stuck in traffic. It does it all automatically.” The Neer team knows what daily life is like for moms and respects the important role they typically play in keeping tabs on who is where, when and how. Using Neer equals ease of mind and fewer miscommunications and stress with family, work and friends. This truly is an app built for YOU. With Neer, now you know. TOUGH YET BEAUTIFUL: SPECIALITY GLASS CREATES DURABLE COVER FOR CONSUMER ELECTRONIC DEVICES By Dave Velasquez, Corning Incorporated Director of Marketing and Commercial Operations, Gorilla® Glass As one of the primary ways users interact with a product, consumers and manufacturers are both well aware of the importance of displays. The increasing prevalence of touchscreens on smartphones and tablets has placed the display even further in the spotlight. It’s no longer one of several ways that users interact with a device, but quickly becoming the only way. With the increased importance of the display, consumers have little tolerance for scratches and damages that distort image, interfere with performance or negatively impact the aesthetic.
Ironically, though, the introduction of touch interfaces to consumer devices actually increased the likelihood of this happening. Since the users are frequently touching the display, there’s a much greater chance that the display will get smudged, cracked or damaged. Just think of the type of abuse smartphones and tablets need to withstand. They get dropped, shoved in overstuffed bags, put in pockets with sharp keys, tossed in purses where who knows what else lurking … and that’s just an average day. To improve the durability of displays, Corning scientists spent 18 months developing a unique glass composition that could be used as cover glass, which would eventually become known as Gorilla

Consumer Electronics Daily News Glass. This environmentallyfriendly thin sheet glass was made for applications where durability and scratchresistance are critical. Gorilla Glass is chemically tempered through an ion exchange where large ions are “stuffed” into the glass surface, creating compression. The glass is then placed in a hot bath of molten salt at a temperature of approximately 400°C. Smaller sodium ions leave the glass, and larger potassium ions from the salt bath replace them. These larger ions take up more room and are pressed together when the glass cools, producing a layer of compressive stress on the surface of the glass. This special composition enables the potassium ions to diffuse far into the surface, creating high compressive stress deep into the glass. These features are especially critical on devices with multi-touch capacitive sensors. With Gorilla Glass, touch smartphones and other music phones. Still haven’t gotten your attention? For the gamers, the GameCom 777 Gaming Headset with virtual 7.1 surround sound enabled by Dolby Headphone and Dolby Pro Logic® IIx technologies combines immersive surround sound and Plantronics’ design excellence to deliver an unmatched sound and voice experience for PC gamers. This open-eared gaming headset with Dolby Headphone technology gives you an unparalleled audio advantage. The GameCom 777 was honored in the headphones category. Business professionals will love the award-winning Plantronics Savi 430, designed for busy and on-the-go workers who travel frequently within a corporate campus. It is ideal for use with laptops or netbooks for voice, video and data communications. It features a lightweight, noise-cancelling headset and DECT USB adapter to provide brilliant audio and up to 300 feet of range. The final product honored this year is the Plantronics Savor M1100 Bluetooth headset, featuring three microphones that work in harmony to ensure every word is heard clearly during conversations. Two of the three microphones precisely capture the user’s voice and simultaneously cancel background noise. The third microphone automatically activates when in extremely noisy situations, helping to overcome the most challenging environments while maximizing battery life. With all of these amazing Plantronics plans. Standard rates for U.S. calls are just 1.9 cents per minute or less than half a penny per minute when you sign up for a mobile calling plan from Ooma. Absolute is warning that the risk of computers being stolen from the home is higher than what may be perceived by consumers. “The trends in this list may surprise some computer owners. According to our experience, consumers think ‘it won’t happen to me’ and take chances. Moreover, unlike a combination of a PIN and token, where the PIN is static and the token is displayed to anyone in its possession, Authernative’s patented technology reliably veils both credentials.” The newly patented Crossline technology has a variety of applications. For example, the Crossline can be used by a field operative to securely access an online resource without having to carry a separate device, which could compromise the
Authernative, Inc., the leading developer of innovative user authentication and identity management technologies, announced Dec. 15 that the United States Patent Office has granted the company a patent for a user authentication method. The newly issued U.S. Patent No. 7,849,321, titled “Authentication method of random partial digitized path recognition with a challenge built into the path”
adds to Authernative’s array of authentication methods based on random partial pattern recognition algorithms. It advances the security of Authernative’s pattern based one-time PIN technology to provide a “what user knows” twocredential authentication. With Authernative’s Passline® patternbased one-time PIN solution, the user’s credential is a secret pattern on a virtual grid of
cells. During each login session, the digital content on the grid is randomized and the user is challenged to enter the content from the randomly specified set of positions of his pattern. The newly patented CrosslineTM technology extends the above method by concealing the location of the challenge inside the grid as a second “what user knows” secret credential. The combination of two secret credentials on the grid having randomized content, used to generate a one-time response, surpasses the security of one-time PIN tokens. Dr. Len Mizrah, President and CEO of Authernative, said, “This technology fills a security gap that afflicts existing knowledge-based authentication solutions, such

Yurbuds (Con’t. from p. 1)
sweat resistant, preventing short-outs.
CNBC. Can you tell our readers who are new to Yurbuds™ a little more about your product?
CEDN: How has Yurbuds grown since the beginning of 2010?
SB: The concept for Yurbuds was born while I was training for a triathlon. I was logging long runs and training sessions and I would have more pain from my earbuds than the training. I couldn’t understand why there wasn’t a better solution available and knew with my background in engineering and medical devices I could create a solution. So I enlisted the help of my co-founder and 20-time marathoner, Rich Daniels, to create an earphone that would eliminate these issues. In researching we found that many people experience pain while wearing earbuds or have trouble with them falling out of their ears. So in creating Yurbuds we started with the anatomy of the ear to create an earbud that is guaranteed never to hurt or fall out. Yurbuds avoids all of the pressure points of the ear and are sized ensuring a perfect fit and for those using Yurbuds while training they are water and

The Yurbuds Ironman Series Earphone delivers everything you expect from Yurbuds in terms of a pain-free and secure fit while providing the sound quality you would normally have to pay twice or three times as much for. Consumer Electronics Daily News SB: Even as a company made up of many amateur athletes, we have been truly inspired by the stories of personal triumph people have shared with us by being part of the Ironman community. Inside the Yurbuds Ironman Series Earphones package you will find two trading cards with stories of personal triumph that reflect the lifestyle of the amateur athlete. We look forward to expanding this engagement with our community in the future to include training tips and more. CEDN: What can we look for from Yurbuds next? SB: Right now we are hard at work in adding to our line while maintaining the quality that our customers have come to expect. Our main priorities are to continue to increase sound quality as well as introduce features such as a microphone. These new features touch on what our customers are looking for to match their busy lifestyles―one for the road or the trail, one for the briefcase.

but they use the highest quality technology to date. G-Cube was created by a young woman named Annie who grew up in the computer industry for 20 years. She decided it was time for ladies to be able to express themselves with the hardware they used. Annie believed in “designing the impossibilities” and wanted to bring style and fashion to technology. She noticed how computer accessories are dull and very
masculine, and realized that CHANGE was needed. Computer accessories should no longer be just accessories for men, why not make it fashionable and accommodate women as well? G-Cube differentiates itself from the masses; their products are a way of customizing yourself, being more of an individual. G-Cube’s design philosophy is about creating modern and stylish designs that will withstand current trends and
remain timeless regardless the year or season. G-Cube has revolutionized the market by offering a refreshing line of computer peripherals that are easy to use: sleek, modern and colorful by blending fashion with technology. need to transmit the same 720p HD video stream, so we can sustain an HD video call in places our competitors can’t.
CEDN: Which videoconferencing and/or online collaboration tools are compatible with faceVsion’s cameras?
CEDN: Why the sudden push for HD videoconferencing?
PL: The most important point here is H.264 video encoding. All companies need to compress the raw video from the camera into an H.264 stream for transmitting over the Internet. The difference is, however, that faceVsion cameras do this encoding in hardware―a chip built into the camera or in an express card. The benefit of this is simple: we need a fraction of the bandwidth our competitors
PL: Blame the current recession as being the big driver of HD videoconferencing as small and medium [SMB] businesses look for ways to cut big expenses such as travel, which can amount to 35 percent or more of a typical company’s sales and marketing budget. The problem in the past with videoconferencing is that the experience wasn’t great, with jerky motion and out-of-sync audio; it just wasn’t effective communications. The faceVsion HD videoconferencing experience is vastly superior, with life-like 720p full-motion video and crystal clear audio. The call quality is so good, it’s like being there in person. For $150 or less per user, businesses can significantly reduce travel costs while maximizing productivity.
PL: Our popular TouchCam N1 and the newly announced TouchCam V1 cameras are SkypeHD certified, which Logitech and Microsoft cannot claim. This basically means the faceVsion cameras are certified by Skype to work in HD, which is key since they have 23+ million users worldwide and with their new version 5.0, they have introduced a group calling feature which allows three to five users to comfortably have a group call. All of faceVsion’s cameras are compatible with faceVsion’s own QuLives video communications client featuring LiveHD. All faceVsion cameras work great with popular online collaboration tools including Cisco WebEx and GoToMeeting.com as well as most video chatting applications. faceVsion will continue to strive to bring affordable HD communications to the masses.

networked wireless is standard.
would you leave that domain for audio?
Of Show: Best New Technology from StereoMojo at the most prestigious audio show in the U.S. How does that feel?
Within 10 years, most TV and audio systems will be devices shared on the home network as printers are today. You will play music and video to them from any Wi-Fi enabled device [PCs, Macs, smartphones, tablets, netbooks, readers, etc.]. Being able to wirelessly share and control the home audio system from any networked device on the fly will fundamentally change the way you listen to music. This next gen universal, wireless, dock-free audio system is possible today with SuperStreamHD.
RR: I have always been a huge music fan and audio enthusiast. A few years ago, someone showed me Rhapsody and I loved it. My whole family was madly making playlists and looking up every song they could think of. We ripped our entire CD collection, bought music from Walmart.com. But it was frustrating to stand by the computer wired to the stereo. I thought I would buy some widget to connect it wirelessly but soon found that nothing worked the way I wanted it to: directly from every computer and wirelessly. Being a wireless guy, I thought I’d rig something together, but soon found as many before me had, that Wi-Fi, though ubiquitous and long range, is inherently difficult to apply to audio. But it was like a brain teaser I couldn’t walk away from. The fact that no one had figured out how to do it just made me more obsessed with solving it.
PL: faceVsion is positioned as a global leader in the emerging videoconferencing segment where workers are becoming increasingly mobile and remote, so this group of people need low-cost effective HD videoconferencing they can use right on their laptop or desktop PC, from anywhere. CEDN: Seems like Logitech or Microsoft could easily say the same things since they offer HD webcams, so how are faceVsion cameras better?
RR: Great! The audience at RMAF is very discriminating, and we are excited that SuperStreamHD was so well received. A lot of care went into making SuperStreamHD a true high performance audio experience—even while playing from a smartphone over Wi-Fi. The rave reviews confirmed that all you need for a high-def audio system is SuperStreamHD software on your computer or smartphone and SuperStreamHD smart speakers or smart amps. No wires, dongles or docks. CEDN: What does SuperStreamHD do? RR: It sets the music trapped on your computer and smartphone free. We are in the midst of a tidal change in home audio. The fastest-growing music market is downloadable music and cloud music sources are growing and multiplying. Sony expects CDs to be only 20 percent of their music retail business in two years, the rest will be online. This makes the home computer the epicenter of a media revolution where computers will not be the destination [as they are today], but a gateway to home entertainment systems. Docks and dongles are just band-aids until universal, SKM Industries (Con’t. from p. 1)
GK: We had a fun year. TV Hat was ridiculed by Gizmodo, laughed at on Leno, Kimmel, ‘Ellen’ and ‘Good Morning America’ and sold out at the trade shows. It’s been a roller coaster ride, that’s for sure. The most important job for the inventor is discovering how to use it and improve it. For instance, I never foresaw how useful it was as a training device. CEDN: Do you think you were treated fairly by the press? GK: Take Gizmodo, for instance. They saw a chance to look ‘humorous’ by being snide and sophisticated, but
CEDN: How does it do that? RR: To make this possible, you need a connectivity and media transport technology that allows media sources to automatically discover who it can play to, without user intervention or configuration or plugging in. It has to play from any device or application and allow media sources to send media to multiple destinations, left speaker, right speaker, etc. simultaneously, fast and reliably. It also should operate over Wi-Fi to eliminate dongles and adapters and allow highdefinition media, etc. These are some of the key elements of SuperStreamHD.
CEDN: And you finally did. Why do you think you were able to do it when others have not?
101
CEDN: You’ve explained how great faceVsion’s HD video cameras are for businesses. Can consumers benefit from HD video calls? PL: Sure they can, and now that faceVsion has launched the new low-cost TouchCam V1, consumers now have a superior HD video camera they can use in Skype and other video chat applications. Most consumers are used to the video call experience with the built-in cameras on their laptops, which deliver grainy, jerky video at best; and typically only the other person’s head and shoulders. Simply plugging in the new TouchCam V1 to their laptop’s USB port and launching Skype, the recipient can now see the entire room in sharp 720p resolution. A night and day experience for the consumer. For more information, e-mail ping.liu@ facevsion.com, visit www.facevsionusa. com or stop by booth MP25368 in the South Hall Lower Level. experience with global wireless systems and large-scale real-time IP networks is pretty unique, at least unique in the world of audio. I have 11 patents in wireless and networking and have spent years analyzing the practical nature of wireless networks, not just the theoretical application. CEDN: All that effort just to play music wirelessly from a computer? RR: Well, early on, we decided it had to do more than play music wirelessly from the computer. We looked at where technology was going and knew that we couldn’t predict future audio formats, applications and services but would have to accommodate them regardless. Also, being music fans, we wanted the sound quality to blow the doors off of other audio systems. So rather than patching together existing technologies, we build a new one from the ground up to play from any Wi-Fi enabled computer device, wirelessly, and universally from any computer media player and any audio format. More than just wireless play, we developed the audio system that we would want for ourselves: the most advanced audio system for today and tomorrow: anytime, anywhere, any media; from any device, high-def and wireless.
CEDN: You were a CTO of a global company that set the standard for advanced wireless tracking systems. Why
RR: Making truly effective technology like SuperStreamHD requires a broad combination of skills in wireless and WiFi, high speed networking, OS/kernel software architecture issues as well as digital audio. These issues are our areas of expertise. My wireless and networking
basically they never really worked with it, or tested it for a few weeks, so it really said more about them than the product. We did take some of their advice and improved the way phones and iPods fit, made a new version that can use your own hat, and molded a new magnifier for better resolution. There is a silly side to TV Hat but as thousands of customers will attest to, there is a very practical side as well.
being very false. No one ever seems to laugh at you when you wear it. I would gladly send $1,000 to the first person who wears it in public and films people spontaneously laughing at you when you wear it in public. I have worn it on planes, trains, automobiles, subways and in the airport and not ever received as much as a glance, let alone been laughed at. Flight attendants only ask where can they buy it.
Netflix, you can create your own. For instance I wanted to lose weight, so I made a film on my webcam telling myself to stop eating so much. I managed to lose 50 pounds! TV Hat is a great personal trainer. I also discovered how fantastic watching Major League Baseball can be. I feel like a kid again. What fun! And as for roller coasters, you can make your own movie and relive your experience at a theme park.
CEDN: You say practical, but Gizmodo predicted you would be laughed at. Were you?
CEDN: And the uses you discovered for that hat, you invented it, what did you discover?
So TV Hat makes you laugh and makes you fit and makes money. How cool is that?
GK: Yes, of course, but if you look at the 100,000 comments, one stands out as

CEDN: Isn’t OnStar already providing consumers with other “new technologies” like mobile apps?
Continued on Page 109
CEDN: How do OnStar’s new services set you apart from your competitors?
CP: Yes. The OnStar MyLink app provides consumers with a real-time connection to their vehicle allowing them to see important information such as their fuel level, oil life and tire pressure, plus it provides the ability to trigger remote commands including remote start and door unlock. The OnStar MyLink mobile app is ready to download for most 2011 GM vehicles.
CP: No one in this space can do what we can with this fully integrated data collection and communication device in the vehicle. In addition to cutting-edge innovation, our Advisors are what make OnStar unique from any other service on the market.
CEDN: What is OnStar doing to support the launch of the innovative new Chevy Volt?
CP: Our voice recognition system is unparalleled in the industry: it’s trained to recognize normal human speech patterns and is capable of recognizing thousands of sentences. That technology combined with our fully integrated data collection and communication device and instant access to our OnStar Advisors make for an unrivaled in-vehicle information and safety system.
CP: OnStar is excited to support the Chevrolet Volt Extended Range Electric vehicle in a couple of ways. At CES 2010, Chevrolet and OnStar unveiled the auto industry’s first working smartphone application. The app allows Chevrolet Volt owners 24/7 connection and control of vehicle functions and OnStar features remotely. The recently launched myvolt.com is a website that similarly leverages OnStar’s real-time data connection to enhance the overall Volt ownership experience. It allows owners to perform tasks including checking their battery’s state of charge, setting the school readiness by measurements of the CLAMS and Wechsler assessments. CEDN: What do you feel is the most significant event for BabyPlus in 2010? JL: It’s difficult to isolate any one event. I will say the completion of our design for a study by Indiana University and Riley Hospital for Children on the impact of the BabyPlus curriculum on cognitive development is significant and very exciting to our company. This is the kind of research partnership that companies like ours dream of in terms of product validation. CEDN: Can you give us an idea of the general outlook for this product? JL: It is an exciting time for our entire book.com/energizerbunny or www .facebook.com/energizer. iPhone is a trademark of Apple, Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries. “Made for iPhone” means that an electronic accessory has been designed to connect specifically to iPhone and has been certified by the developer to meet Apple performance standards. CEDN: Which of these technologies are unique to OnStar?
CEDN: What can we expect from OnStar at CES in 2011? CP: OnStar’s primary focus continues to be on safely connecting consumers in ways they never thought possible. segment of music retail business and the vast majority of those computer and mobile music-playing devices disconnected from the home audio system, the central home audio system is becoming irrelevant to today’s lifestyles. There are audio systems that allow you to connect these devices with wires, dongles, adapters, docks, hubs, or additional rack components, but these solutions compromise the mobility of these mobile devices. Some require separate controllers or remotes, syncing of components, as well as converting music into the formats the system’s player uses. Others only allow you to use certain smartphones. CEDN: Are you introducing any new products? JA: Yes. We will be releasing several new products in 2011, and we are starting the year off with the release of our new compact power pack―the Guide 10. This $39.99 power pack has a USB output port so you can charge cellphones to iPads. It works as a stand-alone product, or you can recharge it with our $99.99 Nomad 7 solar panel, which is the most powerful and affordable USB and 12V solar panel available. CEDN: How do you see the next year in terms of growth and adoption? JA: We’ve seen tremendous interest from both the consumer directly and with retail distributors. Interest in the various applications of our products has been much broader than we had anticipated, MWV (Con’t. from p. 12)

CEDN: What do you anticipate to be your greatest challenge in the year ahead? JA: Our biggest challenge will be educating consumers about the countless applications of the portable solar energy solutions we offer. For years, most consumers have simply gone without power when they’re away from the grid. Now, we want to show them what is possible when they can have power anywhere. GOAL ZERO products are field-tested in the most extreme places and conditions, but they can be used by anyone who needs power where there is no access to an electrical outlet. We’ve already seen strong consumer interest in using GOAL ZERO products for camping, RVing, boating, hunting, fishing, photography, business travel and emergency preparedness. Learn more about Goal Zero by going to goalzero.com, calling 888-794-6250 or stopping by CES booth 25806 in the South Hall Lower Level. about achieving it.
