The Personal Digital Companion From SRS Labs Inc By Alan Kraemer, Chief Technology Officer―SRS Labs Inc. What is the real lure of mobility? We talk about it all the time and everybody seems to want it, but why is it so compelling? Could it be that these devices have become more than our assistants, as in PDAs, and are morphing into our PDCs (Personal Digital Companion)? They essentially remain with us all of our waking hours, and even at night since, for many, including myself, my mobile phone serves as a handy alarm clock that I can see on my nightstand without my glasses. Today, PDCs spring into action at the spur of the moment to take a picture, record a video or voice

memo, play a song or movie, determine our exact location, play a game or even let us read a book. They accompany us in every aspect of our lives and are excellent at performing the tasks that we may not be good at, like remembering appointments or phone numbers. The cool thing is that PDCs can remain out of sight when they aren’t being used since they are small enough to fit in a pocket or purse. Then, when we need them―poof, they appear and grant us our wish of the moment. This concept dawned on me the day after Christmas while standing in line at the Miami airport awaiting my Hertz rental car, which would ultimately take two hours to power through. Ten years ago, with a Palm Pilot in tow, such an

extended delay would have resulted in an insane level of boredom and frustration. But thankfully, today’s PDC has completely changed how, when and where we interact with our preferred content, people and medium. While waiting in line at the Hertz offices, I pulled my phone out of my pocket, checked a few e-mails and then started reading my latest book purchase via the iPhone® Kindle App. Very cool. I didn’t have to leave the line to get anything as unwieldy as a Kindle. I just stood there, completely content, and read my book. The point is that these devices are always there for you, even better than a puppy, and you don’t have to carry a plastic bag around to clean up after them. All a PDC requires is that you keep its battery charged, which is a pretty good deal if you ask me. For more information, please visit SRS Labs at www.srslabs.com.

sales, produces incorrect sales tax reporting information and prevents management from seeing an accurate financial picture of the business. Over the years, to avoid having to use workarounds like this to manage the business, many cellular retailers— unaware of alternative integrated technologies—turned instead to stand-alone cellular retail-specific business management software in an attempt to treat the cellular retail-specific business functionality required for daily operations. The problem with stand-alone cellular retail-specific business management software is that it is not at all effective at managing the back-office financial accounting, and it lacks strong financial controls, financial reporting and financial audit trail—and it is, of

course, still just stand-alone. Standalone systems, like general purpose integrated accounting software and cellular retail-specific business management software, even when loosely integrated, can prevent management from obtaining real-time visibility into the true financial position of the business. The CellSell platform is different. CellSell is an advanced, fully integrated Cellular Retail ERP platform that consolidates and coordinates all the resources, information and activities needed to complete back- and frontoffice cellular retailer business processes from financial accounting, formal realtime financial reporting, point-of-sale (POS), serialized and non-serialized inventory management, inventory optimization, revenue management, sales management, carrier activations, customer relationship management (CRM), sales force automation (SFA), commission management, supply chain management, human resources (HR) and OLAP business intelligence (BI) reporting, without the need for separate or standalone systems. This sort of reminds me of when I used to print CD labels from my printer…who knew now you would be able to do this.” To see what the entire buzz is about and what consumers are saying about this unique product, visit www.iapeel.com or stop by CTIA booth 5952.

Fortune 500 corporations since 1998. They are a distributor of telecom products including cellular accessories. They are unique in that they support both office and mobile requirements. Lexair saw the need to support both mobile and office technologies. Customers were looking for a supplier to provide OEM and/or aftermarket accessories competitively, enterprisewide. CellSell Takes Business Management To The Next Level The problem with stand-alone cellular retail-specific business management software is that it is not at all effective at managing the back-office financial accounting, and it lacks strong financial controls, financial reporting and financial audit trail—and it is, of course, still just stand-alone. Retailers of cellular phones using general purpose integrated accounting software that supports point-of-sale functionality already recognize the value of running one system instead of collections of stand-alone, single-purpose software products in their businesses. The problem with general purpose integrated accounting software is that even when it nicely supports point-of-sale (POS) features, it is not at all effective at managing the wide range of cellular retailspecific business functionality required in daily operations. General purpose integrated accounting software, because of its inability to effectively manage the wide range of

cellular retail-specific business functionality, usually requires wireless retailers to execute a series of workarounds to treat the requirements of their daily operations. One example of this is having to produce a second invoice billed to the cellular carrier for the amount of anticipated activation commissions related to each point-of-sale transaction produced. This practice results in an actual accounts receivable record being created that is intended to represent the exact amount of activation commissions due to the business, related to every invoice made, for a cellular phone where an activation took place. The need to utilize this type of mechanism to treat a core business function, like activation commission tracking and reconciliation, makes for additional cumbersome accounts receivable sub-ledger reconciliation processes and inevitably skews financial records of the corporation. In many cases, this type of manipulation of the accounting records inflates

Lexair Electronics Helps Large Corporations Acquire And Manage Their Cellular Accessories Is your corporation’s “tail-spend” in a tail-spin? Today’s corporations have become vigilant in finding innovative ways to control and manage their “spend” for cellular devices and services. They have leveraged their overall purchase power by contracting directly with known carriers and incorporated TEM solutions. These strategies have offered cost improvements, but only to the originating phone or service portion of the purchase. The “tail-spend” of the purchase is often overlooked as minimal or incidental. So what is the “tail-spend”? It is the accessories and, in most cases, it is in a tail-spin! The average device will require a headset, car charger and case or holster beyond the included AC charger. It may

also require a variety of additional or replacement accessories. The total cost of these accessories is often overlooked, but all of this “tail-spending” can really add up as corporations implement more mobile telecom platforms. Additionally, the demand for accessories that support mobile and Unified Communication devices is expected to increase. So how can corporations more effectively manage their accessories purchases? One way is to identify the accessories as a purchase independent of the cellular devices or service acquisitions. This alternative approach is being implemented at Fortune 500 companies and Lexair Electronics is playing a major role in this developing market. Lexair has been a supplier to

Using Smart Technology To Protect And Manage Remote Telecommunication Sites In the fast-moving world of telecom, it is an unfortunate paradox that some of the most valuable equipment at the heart of a network is often located at the most vulnerable of locations: remote tower sites. These high-tech facilities are typically protected by extremely low technology: a “daisy chain of padlocks” on a chain that invites unwanted entry, lock failure and lost or misplaced keys. In recent years, theft at these locations has become epidemic and the industry is quickly realizing that a padlock is not enough to protect these multi-million dollar investments. “Security is a major concern for the wireless industry,” said Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian, Principal of JN Partners and an experienced business consultant in wireless telecom. “When it comes to wireless compounds, there is the potential for a tremendous amount of theft, with thieves targeting assets including copper and fuel. This is a growing issue for both carriers and tower owners.” The Facility Access Management System™, or FAMS for short, is a new product created by Mi-Jack Systems and Technology specifically to address security issues at telecommunications facilities and give management a total access control system for remote sites. Many leading telecom companies are finding that this comprehensive approach to facility management cannot only improve security, but also provides much-needed control over telecom shelters. FAMS functions simultaneously as an access system, a management control system and an information system. As an access system, FAMS automatically disables the alarm system, unlocks the gate, turns on the lighting and signals a surveillance camera to better protect the facility. As a management control system, FAMS can be programmed to designate exactly who has access to what locations and when he can access them, and deactivate those privileges instantaneously in the event of a lost key fob or terminated employees, to better manage site access. As an information system, FAMS stores audit data so that management has a complete record of all activity at that location, including authorized entries, unauthorized attempts and time and date of all

entries to better monitor the facility. FAMS customers find that the system provides a comprehensive solution for managing security and access at remote facilities. Mike Rupert, Director of Network Operation for AirCell®, stated, “This is the technology and solution which gives us complete control of our site access.” How does FAMS work? The system’s functionality is based around programmable RF key fobs, handheld remote devices similar to your car’s keyless entry device. When entering a facility, an authorized user needs only to depress the key fob and, provided he is authorized to enter the facility at that time, FAMS automatically triggers the predetermined entry protocol―including opening the gate, disabling the alarm system, turning on lighting and signaling a surveillance camera. FAMS’ key fobs eliminate the many problems associated with keyed or combination locks—no more daisy chains, cutting manual keys, replacing broken locks and having different keys for each location. Most importantly, no more rekeying locks because of a personnel change, lost keys or theft. A FAMS key fob can be programmed to provide all the access each user needs, and can be instantly deactivated in the event of a missing key fob or personnel change. “Many facility owners have high staff turnover, meaning that former employees may still have access to a site,” commented Niyonzima-Aroian. “Having control over access to these facilities is a major priority for owners and their clients.” Site security starts at the entrance gate, so MJST developed GateCuff, a reinforced locking mechanism that is securely mounted on any fence gate, providing a strong and secure lock for any facility. GateCuff eliminates the need for a “daisy chains of locks” and prevents problems associated with keyed, keypad and combination entry such as lost keys, unchanged keypad codes, jammed padlocks and unwanted access. “GateCuff is a great product,” said Tom Lennon, Vice President of Industrial Communications, a diverse wireless communications company with towers strategically located in New England and Florida. “Getting rid of daisy chains is a big step for us, along

ReCellular Launches ‘Phones For Haiti’ Cell Phone Recycling Program Used Phone Purchases To Benefit American Red Cross ReCellular today announced a new way for Americans to provide support to the millions of victims of the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti. Used cell phones can be sent in by downloading a prepaid mailing

label at www.phonesforhaiti.com, with the proceeds going to the American Red Cross’ charitable efforts. “The devastation in Haiti is slowly becoming all too clear,” said Steve Manning, ReCellular CEO. “Sending in your used phone is a simple and effective way to help with the rescue and

with all of the problems that they cause…lost and misplaced keys, broken locks and the potential for unwanted entry by former employees.” However, FAMS does much more than just control access to a remote site―it is a fully integrated system that allows the administrator to control and monitor the facility remotely. With FAMS management software, all audit information can be downloaded to a spreadsheet to create an audit trail so there is never any question about who accessed the facility, when they did and for how long. Activity can be tracked for all users and for each user group, such as service technicians, maintenance staff and tenant representatives, and can be used to verify invoicing. “For many of our customers, the audit trail is very valuable so they have a complete record of who entered the facility and when they did so,” said Scott Borsodi, Vice President Sales for MJST. “In particular, many of our state and federal government customers find this to be one of the key benefits to FAMS.” FAMS functions can also be remotely accessed via available network connection, giving management complete control over the location from anywhere, any time. From a standard PC, the administrator can direct all authorizations, activations or deactivations of key fobs and pull up a complete audit of all activity at the facility. FAMS is compatible with most alarm systems and can activate a security camera upon entry, providing the user with real-time visibility over the site and reducing labor requirements. The system can be fully customized to meet the needs of each user and optional features include the ability to turn on lights at entry, automatic activation of video recording to monitor door activity and remote temperature sensors that can monitor temperature to increase energy efficiency. Back-up battery power is a standard feature, ensuring full functionality in the event of a power failure. Even with the best security available, some components at a facility demand further protection. MJST has created another product that provides enhanced security for one of the most vulnerable pieces of equipment at a facility: busbars. Theft of busbars from cell tower facilities has become an epidemic, as thieves seeking the valuable copper easily pry the busbar from its mooring, resulting in not only expensive replacement but also tower down time and costly labor. “Copper theft is an issue for tower owners because of the

value of the material and the fact that there is a black market for copper,” stated Niyonzima-Aroian. The Universal BUS Guard was designed specifically for the purpose of deterring busbar theft. The simple but highly effective Universal BUS Guard provides a steel encasement that turns away unwanted intruders, while still allowing full functionality and access to the busbar for maintenance personnel. The Universal BUS Guard can be easily installed and is adjustable to accommodate most busbar applications. The product can also be incorporated into the FAMS system to include a tamper alert. The Universal BUS Guard product is designed to meet a growing demand from site operators. “Theft of busbars is a major issue for many of our customers. Unauthorized removal of a busbar not only means they have to replace the busbar, but it can lead to costly tower downtime,” said Borsodi. “Most importantly, it can also leave a tower vulnerable to lightning and power surges, making prevention of busbar theft a very serious issue in the industry.” With a heightened level of security, the elimination of outdated padlocks and keypads, as well as remote control of the location, FAMS is a total access control system that provides a new level of facility management for telecommunications compounds. The system is designed to meet the growing need for enhanced security at remote telecommunications sites. “We continue to hear from customers about the importance of security and control over remote telecom sites. With the ever-increasing threat of theft, new government regulations and continued growth in the industry, there is no question this will remain a major issue,” said Borsodi. “We have developed the FAMS system specifically to help customers better control and secure their remote telecom facilities, and we will continue to help them more effectively and securely manage these valuable assets.” For more information on FAMS and MJST, please see their ad on page 9, visit them at booth 2066 at CTIA WIRELESS or visit www.mjst.com.

rebuilding efforts already underway.” There are an estimated 130 million phones retired in the United States every year. If even a small percentage of them are sent to Phones for Haiti, it would contribute millions of dollars toward relief from the devastating earthquake. ReCellular will give 100 percent of the phone value as a contribution to the American Red Cross; charities have already earned more than $20 million dollars in contributions through their partnerships with ReCellular. With rescue and repair missions already underway, it is critical that funds

All phones are accepted, though newer phones will provide the most value to the charity—in some cases $100 or more. “The overwhelming response from all Americans to the crisis in Haiti reflects the depth of generosity of the American people,” said Manning. “We are proud to be able to coordinate this

PT, the leading provider of innovative network communications solutions, formerly known as Performance Technologies, has tripled the capacity of its SEGway™ Signaling Solution, already an industry leader. Each system will handle an unparalleled 600,000 transactions per second (TPS) with more than 2,000 SigTran associations on a single, telco-hardened 12U chassis. Network signaling traffic is increasing by orders of magnitude due to mobile messaging and mobile services, leading telecom operators to face serious limitations in their legacy TDM or

hybrid networks. Increasingly, they face the choice to retrofit or replace existing nodes with IP-based architecture. PT’s SEGway systems are the only signaling systems purpose-built for the rigors of an IP-centric network with its highbandwidth demands and databaseheavy applications. These platforms are designed using Ethernet-based backplane architecture with built-in five nines reliability, allowing all SIP and SigTran associations to be connected via two gigabit Ethernet ports to significantly simplify installation, wiring and configuration.

Port and traffic capacity is satisfied by simply equipping the system with additional routing CPUs, giving the SEGway its scalability. In addition to its unmatched transaction-per-second rate, SEGway provides a complete selection of interfaces―TDM, ATM, AnnexA, IP and SIP. It is unique in the market in that this capacity is maintained even with the addition of features such as Gateway Screening, Signaling Gateway, Point Code Emulation™ or Global Title Translation. PT’s equipment not only increases an operator’s network efficiency, it also lowers the cost of signaling transport. SEGway Signaling Solutions have the smallest footprint per processing capability, and the highest signaling density in the industry. That adds up to a drastic reduction in power consumption and greatly decreased facilities and operating

priority traffic. Used to monitor connectivity and performance for each service class between the MSC and each cell site, Y.1731 sessions quickly scale into the thousands as operators light up hundreds of towers in a metro region. Existing routers with softwarebased OAM implementations can incur processing delays that result in nonsensical latency and jitter measurements— often several times longer than accurate measurements provide. This lack of precision under real-world conditions leads to false alarms and inconsistent or incomplete monitoring visibility. By contrast, the 10GE unit features a

dedicated-silicon, all-hardware architecture capable of processing thousands of flows in parallel with microsecond precision—technology scaled from Accedian’s well-known MetroNID ® units, widely deployed to establish OAM and monitor performance at cell sites worldwide. “Mobile operators no longer have to maintain networks with sparse, inaccurate OAM measurements as they move from field trials to full-scale 3G and LTE deployments,” explained Patrick Ostiguy, President of Accedian Networks. “Hundreds of operators count on our solutions to assure critical applications—we

from leading service providers seeking an enhanced alternative to traditional network elements. With an initial feature set optimized for mobile backhaul applications, the 10GE unit’s ultra-precise OAM capabilities easily scale to the large number of sessions required to monitor and maintain 3G and 4G service deployments. To guarantee Quality of Service (QoS) for a wide variety of real-time communication and data services, backhaul connections maintain different service classes for high, medium and low

costs, contributing to a greener environment. Its flexibility and high scalability make it the perfect solution for operators designing or migrating to an IP network, and is suitable for deployment at the core or the edge of the network. “We have leveraged our considerable signaling expertise to think outside the proverbial box, and develop a ninefold performance increase within less than a year that is leaps and bounds ahead of anything else in the industry,” said Virgil Long, Senior Director of Engineering at PT. “Business cases prove that carriers may realize cost savings reaching millions of dollars over three to five years’ time, and our entire system costs them less than an upgrade of most legacy systems.” For more information, call 585256-0200, visit www.pt.com or stop by booth 6551. engineered the MetroNODE 10GE to exceed their requirements and expectations. By using the 10GE to deploy service with confidence, they can overcome shortcomings in what they now consider legacy technology.” Accedian is currently exhibiting at CTIA in Las Vegas, booth 6565. Midsun’s Self-Fusing Silicone Tape Is The Solution To Accommodate Any Need Midsun Specialty Products will be making their second appearance at the CTIA WIRELESS trade show this year. Midsun Specialty Products is a manufacturer of self-fusing silicone tape. What Is Self-Fusing Silicone Tape? Self-fusing silicone tape has been around since the early 1950s. The military first developed it in place of electrical tape. They used the silicone tape for a variety of purposes, from insulation to wiring, especially in the areas that were prone to leaks and wear. The military even tested it in a variety of the world’s harshest conditions and applications. Midsun’s silicone tape meets or exceeds U.S. Spec

AA-59163 (formerly MIL-46852C). One of the reasons that the military utilizes the silicone tape is because of the natural properties of the silicone. Selffusing silicone can form a watertight, highly insulated, non-corrosive overwrap on virtually any electrical connection. It also works in a temperature range of -65°F to 500°F. Self-fusing silicone tape can be used in automotive, electrical, aerospace, marine, plumbing and outdoor areas. The company also markets the product to the mining and wireless industries. When it comes to weatherproofing, self-fusing silicone tape can be used in systems for connections, jumpers,

WW: What was the most significant event or series of events affecting your company in the past year? PD: Successfully launching the All Tight and Comp Pro connectors into the marketplace.

WW: What distinguishes your products from the competition? PD: A higher quality of engineering. Our connectors compress and make surface contact in three places, making a wireless network more durable and efficient, especially when it comes to

antenna connections, surge and suppressors. It has excellent track resistance with a very high dielectric strength. It has an excellent resistance to ozone, arc and to moisture and oxygen. It even prevents corrosion. One of the reasons that MSP is here at the CTIA WIRELESS 2010 trade show is they have begun working with large wireless companies to stop corrosion on all their connectors. Their solutions can help you too! Designed to replace heat-shrinkable sleeving, the tape fuses to itself within 24 hours. Its 300 percent elongation will allow the tape to form-fit around complex and irregular shapes. Also, it dampens vibrations and resists heat and mechanical shock, including corona. MSP produces self-fusing silicone

tape from a ¼'' wide to 4'' wide and 5 mil to 80 mil thick. They can also rib one side and even perforate the tape at requested lengths to accommodate any need. “Our tape is not only waterproof but can be applied underwater, and it won’t be harmed by diesel fuels, oils or saltwater. Only strong oxidants such as liquid chlorine, pure oxygen or calcium hypo chlorate will degrade it,” the company stated. “Our tape does not leave a sticky residue; therefore there is less labor to remove it.” Midsun Specialty Products manufactures self-fusing silicone tape in 15 colors and can also match a color when a PMS is provided. Their tape is UL-listed. For more information, please visit www.midsunspecialtyproducts.com or stop by booth 1466.

iaPeel just launched at CES 2010 and has already been signed for international distribution throughout Europe, Australia, Mexico and Africa. The press has been extraordinary! From “ABC World News Now,” “MacBreak” and “Daily Giz Wiz” to multiple online blogs and sites, people could not be giving iaPeel better buzz. Sara Baker, reviewer for techbuck etblog.com, said, “iaPeel, while looking like a regular skin, has perhaps the most innovative method of getting a skin on that we at Tech Bucket Blog have ever seen. You might be thinking now, really?…History tells us that the simplest perhaps least innovative devices

have some of the most thought behind them. Take a look, it doesn’t seem all that fancy. It’s something you feed into your printer, pick your design and click print. That’s it. Turn the printed skin around and you’ll find the real innovation. There are simple fold-up tabs that guide where your iPod should go. You place your iPod in those tabs and a simple few peels and turns and presto! The skin is on.…That’s why iaPeel is mentioned and some of the other skins are not. iaPeel stands out where others merely blend in or go for fancy licensing. Fortunately for us and our customers, Pitney Bowes Business Insight is uniquely positioned with a portfolio of high-value solutions and platforms that help our customer enhance the value of their customer relationships and improve their business performance. Our focus on helping our clients acquire new customers, serve the customers they have and grow the value of their relationships has resulted in a successful and loyal customer base. WW: What do you anticipate to be your greatest challenge in the year ahead? MH: In today’s economic climate, your competition isn’t just people that are in the same business as you. Your competition is anybody that is competing for IT dollars. As a result, you must have a very strong value proposition and provide return on investment to your clients. And it’s a great repair kit for motorists; you can use it to wrap around a burst radiator hose or battery lead.” Midsun Specialty Products also supplies the aerospace industries. Our tape is used as a harness wrap in some of our most popular commercial aircrafts,” Hatje said. Tommy Tape Miracle Wrap is not only waterproof but can also be applied underwater and won’t be harmed by diesel fuels, oils or saltwater (only strong oxidants such as liquid chlorine, pure oxygen or calcium hypo chlorate will degrade it). And because it isn’t sticky,

it’s perfect for whipping the ends of ropes, cables or winch handles. Electricians can use Tommy Tape Miracle Wrap as a simple method of termination splicing. Designed to replace heat-shrinkable sleeving, the tape fuses to itself within 24 hours. Vojtila also stated that its 300 percent elongation stretch wrap conforms to any shape and its dielectric strength is 400V/mil or 12,000 volts with the 30 mil tape. Tommy Tape Miracle Wrap remains pliable through a wide range of operating temperatures (-65˚F to 500˚F). It doesn’t crack with cold or soften in the heat, making it ideal in extreme temperature

conditions. And when it’s finally time to remove the tape, it’s just a matter of slicing it through and it falls away without leaving a sticky residue. “New areas of interest for our tape are the mining and wireless industries because of all the different types of applications and the conditions that need to be met,” Hatje said. The tape is manufactured in Connecticut and all ingredients are made in the United States. The size range is from 5 mil thick to 80 mil thick and ½'' wide to 4'' wide. The tape can also come in a FR or fire-resistant formula. For more information, visit www.midsunspecialtyproducts.com.

a multitude of benefits for companies, from the ability to analyze market opportunities to improving customer billing processes and even flagging fraud.

Systems that track and record our movement through physical space will be woven inextricably into everyday life. Already we operate some location-based systems: dashboard navigation systems, smartphones with GPS features and electronic tags that help us zip through toll stations. But in the coming years, location-aware tools will become more common, sophisticated and indispensable. By blending location data into predictive analytics and business intelligence, PBBI customers will be able to have more sophisticated insight into their business planning equations.

WW: Why Voice On The Go?

WW: What solution areas do you see as being hottest this year? MH: Location intelligence and GIS solutions such as MapInfo Professional®, Spectrum™ and Envinsa® will continue to play an important role for carriers for accurately mapping out the location of network assets, performing risk and competitive analyses and strategically growing their business. These solutions will be popular as more communications providers recognize the need to bring critical location data out of ‘silos’ and easily share it across their enterprise for more strategic business decisions. Additionally, these solutions will be critical for utilities engaging in real-time monitoring of their networks to support the increasingly widespread Smart Grid. BelAir Networks (Con’t. from p. 1)

SR: BelAir Networks has been around since 2002 and our focus has always been on helping Service Providers―both wireless and wired―attract and retain customers through carrier-grade Wi-Fi solutions that integrate seamlessly with and leverage the service providers network and back office. We’re a private company with Tier 1, first mover customers including AT&T and Cablevision and we’ve had No. 1 market share every quarter for the last two and a half years. WW: From your experience, why should mobile operators use Wi-Fi to offload data from their 3G networks? SR: The problem and solution to mobile data congestion are both in the palm of your hand. What I mean is, smartphones Globecomm (Con’t. from p. 1)

Value-added services such as SMS, MMS, E911, CALEA, pre-paid and postpaid are becoming an essential part of a wireless carrier’s offering. But how can these new services be delivered without a major capital or operational investment? Many carriers are opting for a onestop-shop approach to service delivery. For example, Indigo Wireless recently selected Globecomm’s hosted platform to provide switching facilities for its subscribers and its roaming partners, with services for voice, video and data. By using Globecomm’s hosted 3G core switch for its hosted mobile services, AT&T (Con’t. from p. 1)

of emerging devices, resale and partnerships at AT&T, talks about his company’s leadership position in this area. WW: What’s happening emerging devices?

now

in

GL: In 2010, we expect to see a lot of competition and lots of new devices. For example, many computer equipment manufacturers are building a connected lightweight computing device, whether it’s called a netbook, MID or tablet. The computing OEMs today understand that they have to do this as this is the next wave of innovation. We believe that will drive the competition in this space to alltime highs. We expect to see continued growth and innovation in eReaders, telematics, personal navigation devices and location-based services. For example, the amount of information and relevant content that can be delivered to a connected PND is phenomenal. It really changes the total value proposition and what PNDs do for a consumer. Location-based services are the same ReCellular (Con’t. from p. 12)

opportunity when the need is so great.” About ReCellular With offices in the United States and Hong Kong, ReCellular Inc. is the world’s leading electronics-sustainability firm. They provide solutions for

and other devices are increasingly causing 3G network congestion, so it makes sense for operators to leverage the Wi-Fi capabilities of dual mode devices to offload data traffic from their networks in areas of high user concentration. Traditionally, mobile operators weren’t very interested in Wi-Fi―associating it with residential and enterprise gear, unsuitable in a carrier-grade network. When data congestion issues started to impact mobile networks, some operators contracted with third party Wi-Fi providers to extend Wi-Fi services to their customers. But as Wi-Fi enabled devices continue to proliferate, it is now clear to mobile operators that to maintain the network quality and brand experience of their customers [and not offload those to a potential competitor!], they need to own their Wi-Fi infrastructure. So now they are demanding carrier-grade Wi-Fi solutions.

WW: What do you mean by carriergrade Wi-Fi?

Indigo is able to offer more value-added services at a lower cost. In addition, Globecomm provided all of the GSM equipment, as well as the design and integration services, for Indigo Wireless’ network build-out. Globecomm’s hybrid networks are optimized so that Indigo Wireless can provide multiple data traffic options to meet increased data demands and deliver a better overall experience to the end user. Globecomm offers hosted and managed network services, design and integration and backhaul capabilities for both terrestrial and satellite communications. Its carrier-grade, hosted mobile 3G core switch enables wireless

carriers to cost-effectively and rapidly deploy voice, video and data services anywhere in the world. The company’s 100 percent IP-based soft-switch architecture also offers a forward path to 4G technologies. In addition, with Globecomm’s backhaul technology and hosted services platform, broadband service can be provided to communities at fixed costs irrespective of their location, current mode of broadband access or proximity to existing telecommunications infrastructure. The technology and services already exist for providing costeffective broadband access to unserved or under-served rural communities.

Globecomm’s technologies and network architecture provide a universal solution to serve these areas immediately—and at costs that are both acceptable and essentially independent of geographic and demographic scenario. By taking a hosted approach, wireless carriers can quickly and seamlessly deploy these services in rural and underserved areas worldwide. They can “do more with less,” while at the same time future-proof their networks to advance seamlessly and profitably to the next generation of mobile services. way. Whether you want to know where your daughter, your car, your dog or your package is, the cost of modules and the cost to enable an item that you want to track and find will likely come down, making these products more appealing to consumers. Another area gaining momentum is wirelessly enabling products for use in the medical field. Things like sensors on humans to understand what they’re doing, accelerometers on aging parents―are they upright or did they fall down? These devices detect heart rate, other vital signs or if you took your medicine that day. There are lots of companies investigating the benefits from wirelessly enabling products to improve human health.

our U.S. competitors cannot: the nation’s fastest 3G network, the GSM world standard for wireless technology―which allows customers to use their wireless devices for voice in 220 countries and data services in more than 190 countries through roaming agreements―and the nation’s largest Wi-Fi network, with over 20k hotspots. The result is through 2009, AT&T has certified more than 750 wireless specialty consumer and machineto-machine devices―such as eReaders, netbooks, digital photo frames, personal navigation devices and home security monitoring and smart grid devices―for use on our mobile broadband network. And customers are responding. In the fourth quarter of 2009, we connected more than one million emerging devices to our network.

and business devices on AT&T’s wireless network. The proprietary platform―AT&T Control Center, powered by Jasper Wireless―accelerates market entry for connected devices while offering unique features such as instant activation and flexible rate plans that benefit device manufacturers and end-user customers, including consumers, small businesses and enterprises. We also are supporting or have announced plans to support devices in many of the major emerging device categories: eReaders, netbooks, personal navigation devices, digital photo frames and telematics devices. We are committed to collaborating with consumer electronics manufacturers and all other companies in the emerging devices ecosystem to help drive innovation and growth in what is perhaps the most exciting area in the wireless industry today. One of the keys to all of this will be the continued building of trusted relationships within the emerging device ecosystem for long-term success.

WW: How did AT&T gain a leadership position in emerging devices? GL: Several reasons. First, we formed a dedicated organization to focus on wirelessly enabling new categories of emerging devices in late 2008. This dedicated organization enabled AT&T to focus on the emerging device market. Second, AT&T offers advantages the collection, reuse and recycling of used personal electronics that generate financial return for their partners, quality products for their customers, funding for charity organizations and protection of the environment. Corporate, charitable, consumer and wholesale information is available at www.recellular.com.

SR: Carrier-grade Wi-Fi refers to both the hardware as well as the operating and management software. On the hardware side, were talking about highly reliable indoor and outdoor APs with an MTBF of more than 50 years, because operators don’t want to be sending trucks and personnel to replace faulty gear! It’s also important that the APs are easy and quick to deploy―our APs are installed and operational in 15 minutes. On the software side, it’s about facilitating service provisioning and bundling, making deployment and operation easier and reducing network commissioning and upgrade costs. Features like highly granular policy enforcement at the edge with centralized administration, carrier security at

WW: How does AT&T plan to build on this leadership position? GL: We will continue to be laser-like focused on this space. Last year, AT&T teamed with Jasper Wireless to build a platform to connect and support a variety of emerging consumer electronic Adax (Con’t. from p. 32)

and servers like the Sun Blade 6000 is ideal for database-type applications in telecoms such as Multimedia Services.” The Adax HDC3 family is also available in PMC, AMC, PCI/X and PCIe (full height and low-profile) board formats, all of which share a common software driver

the edge with robust, scalable administration and end-to-end QoS. Mobile operators also want business intelligence features like location and device aware insights into user experience. Of course, making the user experience seamless also means ensuring that users stay connected as they move through the Wi-Fi network―we’ve proven that in the world’s largest Wi-Fi networks. Operators also want seamless integration with their current policy managers and edge routers and they want network management that’s both easy to use and highly scalable. That’s carrier-grade Wi-Fi and it’s what we mean when we say that BelAir Networks is the Wi-Fi for Service Providers. RM: Numerous key components collectively make the CellSell platform extremely unique and much more suitable than standalone retail point-of-sale solutions, general purpose accounting systems or wireless industry retail management systems to meet the specific requirements of today’s modern wireless retail organizations. CellSell consolidates and coordinates all of the resources, information and activities needed to complete cellular retail industry-specific, front and back office business processes. CellSell is a state-of-the-art fully integrated thin client retail ERP platform for wireless-centric businesses that includes real-time financial accounting, point-ofsale, serialized and non-serialized inventory management, inventory KORE Telematics (Con’t. from p. 1)

consumer devices like the e-book reader, and providers see M2M as an easy way to add millions of new connections. But there’s a lot more to the average application than simply plugging in a SIM card and signing a wireless data plan. Missioncritical business-to-business applications, which represent the majority of the M2M marketplace, bring unique requirements and challenges that go well beyond the basic connectivity of a Kindle. The Devil Is In The Details While applications that monitor pacemakers or sleep apnea patients are attractive because each represents tens of thousands of potential end-point users, in reality these applications consume a very small amount of capacity, as little as 10 to 15 kilobytes a day. Further, many M2M devices do not PDA Repair World (Con’t. from p. 1)

Sound familiar? It should because it happens every day. So, what do you do? You aren’t trained to repair BlackBerry devices, so what if you damage the unit even further like your competitor did? This is where PDA Repair World becomes your solution. PDA Repair World, formerly known as bbrepair shop.com, has been repairing BlackBerry and BlackBerry only since 1999. Billed as the world’s only dedicated BlackBerry Repair Facility, to date they have repaired more than 250,000 of these addictive devices to like-new condition. So, how does this benefit you? Because RIM, the maker of BlackBerry, does not offer a repair certification program to dealers like many other device manufacturers; finding a qualified repair facility is a roll of the dice. purpose of Business Intelligence reporting is to help companies to make realtime decisions based on their corporate data. Some Business Intelligence applications cannot make this data available to the users until the next day. These types of systems can leave the companies that use them at a disadvantage, and in the highly competitive environment of cellular retail, this could lead to loss of business opportunity. One of the key components making advanced CellSell platform technology so unique is our built-in, real-time OLAP decision technology business intelligence reporting that requires no data replication whatsoever. This advanced technology enables users to analyze their CellSell data as well as to create various reports and graphs easily and instantly.

security, so that should a PC ever suffer a hardware failure, no data will be lost, as the data resides on the server and not on the point-of-operation PC. CellSell thin client technology can lower hardware costs for cellular retailers by extending the life of existing older, less powerful PCs. This allows our customers to continue their effective use for a longer period of time before requiring an upgrade or becoming obsolete. Additionally, our proprietary CellSell thin client technology eliminates the need to install and maintain server side printer drivers. This resolves server printer compatibility issues and simplifies CellSell deployments.

WW: What does thin client mean? RM: In the context of CellSell, it means a thin client software program. In more general terms, thin client computing is designed so that no application data resides on a user’s workstation itself [just whatever is displayed on screen]; this facilitates centralized malware protection and reduces the risk of physical data theft. Thin client access can be quickly configured to facilitate enhanced data

have a 12-month duty cycle. The owner of a trucking fleet may rotate vehicles in and out of service, with each vehicle averaging only 40 weeks of active duty. End-users of this ilk are bound to ask, “Why should I pay a flat fee for an entire year of usage?” Rather, they demand the flexibility to pay for only the network time they consume. A carrier can certainly revise its billing system to accommodate M2M, but at what cost? How much can they be expected to invest in order to support an application that generates $3/month, or less, in revenue? Application providers also require experienced M2M support specialists who can get them up and running quickly. Making sure an application works endto-end takes people and customized self-service business management tools and services. A small vehicle tracking start-up with two or three customers

may at first use an Excel spreadsheet to organize its billings. However, as it grows, the company will need to track its network use by industry segment, customer and even service level. It will need to ensure proper rate-of-usage and check for faulty devices; if a device malfunctions or consumes more network time than is projected, customers will expect an automatic alert. All of these activities call for a “smart” management platform, with Web-based controls that can check the status of a device at any time, whether it is active in the network and the last time it established an IP session. Such a portal also allows the provider to deactivate faulty devices, or provision new ones at will. A sheriff’s office, for example, may want to upgrade to a newly developed ankle bracelet that facilitates voice communication with the offender.

Finally, mission-critical M2M applications require seamless access to CDMA and GSM technologies to maintain absolute, 24/7 connectivity, and the network must be able to serve a global customer-base with specialized, crossborder arrangements. Not every carrier will be able to meet the end-to-end needs of every application, nor should they want to. Instead, by turning M2M over to specialized network operators, carriers more directly get what they want—profitable airtime service revenue without incurring the cost of support and acquisition—and enterprises and ASPs get the level of reliability, service integrity and skills necessary to ensure the health of the M2M application throughout its lifecycle. World, explained: “One of the best kept secrets in the industry is our reseller program. No one out there, including us, is certified by RIM to repair these devices. What makes us different is that we have, to my knowledge, been repairing BlackBerry longer and in more volume than anyone in the mobile device industry. With that said, for wireless dealers to retain BlackBerry end users, we have developed a certification program for those shops interested in level 1 BlackBerry repair. Level 1 repairs include changing a housing or any of its components, trackballs, repairing the trackball ‘select’ feature, LCD changes— pretty much any repair that can be performed without the use of a soldering iron. This program ensures that facilities displaying ‘PDA Repair World Certified Repair Facility’ signage have proven their competency in level 1 repairs, so that a BlackBerry end user will actively

seek out and feel confident that their device has been repaired by trained professionals using OEM parts.” Wireless World asked, what if it is a repair that would require more extensive work, like replacing USB ports, SIM card holders, headset jacks and things like that? Normand stated, “That is where the partnership truly becomes valuable between PDA Repair World and the wireless dealer. Our program offers significant discounts to the dealer off of our list prices. This allows the dealer to ship BlackBerrys to us, knowing that they will be repaired quickly and correctly the first time while making a commission, so no revenue is lost. We have 24-hour turnaround on most repairs. Also, if a dealer does not want to perform level 1 repairs on site, they can send those units to our facility as well. Alternately, if the dealer doesn’t care to be involved with shipping

a unit, we will provide them with PDArepairworld.com cards with their company ID number that can be used by their customers to receive a discount on our site while making a commission for the referral. “All of our solutions are designed to make the dealer more money and help them retain their customers. We offer wholesale pricing to all wireless dealers. If a dealer goes the extra mile to become certified by us, they receive a much larger discount on their parts as well as a listing on our Web site in order for customers to find them. “If any dealers are interested in this program, I will be at CTIA. If a dealer would like to talk, they just need to send an e-mail to resellers@pdarepairworld.com and I will set up a meeting. Otherwise, they can send an e-mail to the same address after CTIA and we will contact them with more details.”

WW: Explain real-time OLAP decision technology business intelligence reporting that requires no data replication. RM: Sure. Business Intelligence or BI as it is commonly called, is a business management tool, which usually consists of specialized, predominantly standalone applications or vendor value-added modules, query reporting and data analysis tools, data mining software, data warehousing software, etc. All of these can be considered Business Intelligence management tools to some degree and they can sometimes be time-consuming to implement and expensive to acquire and maintain. Generally Business Intelligence or Decision Reporting tools require data staging and data replication routines of some kind—this so as to make the data available to users, to help them in making decisions. The intended

last month at Mobile World Congress. The wireless industry knows you as Performance Technologies. Why change? PR: PT has a strong following in the wireless industry; we’re quite proud of the long history of Performance Technologies. PT’s refreshed identity signifies the convergence of our technologies to form the basis for greater solutions. PT was founded in 1981 as an embedded products company supplying open-standards based hardware to OEMs. The company amassed an impressive set of communications systems, software and hardware core technologies, becoming a trusted supplier to telecommunications carriers and government. It’s a history few are aware of and even fewer understand when it comes to the benefits. Our new image is a way to more clearly communicate the true value proposition of PT. WW: Can you explain in more detail SRS Labs (Con’t. from p. 1)

AK: Before SRS, standard stereo was the most common mode of audio reproduction. Stereo is a two-channel system. With only two speakers, almost all of the spatial information in the audio signal that represents the acoustic environment is lost. Stereo reproduces the rich, threedimensional sound field of the original performance or recording in a twodimensional flat plain. SRS stands for ‘sound retrieval system’—the process retrieves the spatial information in the original stereo recording, extracts that information and uses correction filters based on the way the hearing system works to render the ambient information beyond the physical location of the speakers. With SRS the original stereo field was spread to about 180 degrees, and the stereo sweet spot in the exact center was eliminated. You could hear a realistic audio image anywhere you walked in the room. So what SRS did was take reproduced stereo audio and bring it a lot closer to what you would experience in a live performance. WW: SRS Labs often describes its technologies as natural or organic sound. What does this mean? KGP Logistics (Con’t. from p. 1)

Wireless World how the combination of technology in PT’s portfolio benefits your customers? PR: PT’s expansive product line is anchored by its IPnexus® ApplicationReady Systems that provide IP-native pre-integrated platforms and management systems to OEMs and application developers. For instance, such telecom manufacturers as Alcatel-Lucent, AT&T and MetaSwitch rely on IPnexus as a key element in their applications. Recently, Harris-Stratex [now Aviat] selected PT as the platform for their WiMax offering. This type of success is why our field-proven IPnexus platform has become the foundation other PT solutions. WW: In essence, PT has become its own customer? PR: Exactly. The most familiar example is SEGway™ Signaling Solutions, PT’s premier line of IP-centric STPs, gateways, edges and network applications. These products permit service AK: We take into account the human ear brain system as well as human perception and look at it as a system, as it integrates with the electro-mechanical part of the audio reproduction system. It’s natural in the sense that we’re not just considering the audio system in isolation, but we’re considering how real humans actually interact with reproduced audio, because we perceive reproduced audio very differently than we perceive live audio. WW: What types of devices benefit from solutions such as SRS WOW HD? AK: SRS WOW HD™ is very effective with mobile phones, PCs and portable media players. For example, the spatial processes of WOW HD can take headphone audio, which often seems to originate from the middle of your head―which is really unnatural―and renders it beyond the confines of the headphones in both the horizontal and vertical dimensions, creating a uniform sound field outside the head. WOW HD can also be adjusted for small speakers which are typically used on small devices such as mobile phones, netbooks or iPod docks. It can significantly enhance the audio produced through these types of devices, providing a much more spacious

providers to cost-effectively deliver revenue-generating features in nextgeneration networks. SEGway Solutions appear in world-class carrier networks around the globe because they offer the highest density, unparalleled price-toperformance, flexibility of edge-to-core deployments, small footprint and ease of use. We term it “Simply Smarter Signaling.” It’s only one example of PT utilizing its own resources. WW: Network infrastructure is top of mind when thinking of Performance Technologies, but has PT explored solutions for the NGN application space? PR: PT’s newest line, Xpress™ NGN Application, combines a powerful, customizable software application with a robust hardware platform engineered to deliver SIP-based solutions for Nextgeneration networks. Based on pure IP implementation, new service offerings can be quickly developed and deployed network-wide on IMS-enabled, converged TDM/IP and VOIP networks. and natural listening experience. WW: What is SRS TruVolume? AK: Everyone has experienced the huge variations in volume between programs and commercials and when you switch channels on cable or on over-the-air broadcast or satellite. The volume jumps because there is no universal volume standard. SRS TruVolume™ levels out these volume spikes utilizing psychoacoustic principles that take into account how people perceived changes in volume at different frequencies and under varying signal conditions. TruVolume maintains a constant level in a way that is not perceptible to the user, without adverse side effects. It is a transparent solution that effectively solves a common and very annoying problem. WW: In what way are SRS solutions superior to your competitors like Dolby or DTS? AK: First of all, our solutions are a bit different than theirs. Their primary solutions are transmission solutions. They’re codecs, which are designed to get audio from one place to another. This is complementary to what SRS does because when the audio reaches its destination,

WW: It sounds like PT is virtually a new company, comprised of all the pieces of the former company, assembled in a new order. PR: That’s true. We offer the same trusted quality, but we are more than a supplier. We are sensitive to customers because we stand with them, and none are left behind as we expand our product offerings and value proposition. The new logo is just one element of the new PT, but it reflects so many values we embrace: moving forward, breaking free, expanding and broadening the mix. It includes green—signifying that our products respect the environment by consuming less power. It salutes our original diamond symbol, yet it reflects young, next-generation communicators. It appeals on a global basis. We are, simply, PT. Performance is our name. For more information, call 585-2560200, visit www.pt.com or stop by booth 6551. we take it from there. We post-process the audio at the point of consumption to maximize the user’s experience. For example, our TruSurround® technology renders Dolby Digital 5.1 encoded Audio to deliver a surround sound experience via a TV’s built-in speakers, creating an immersive sound field without the need for additional speakers. WW: What do you feel will be the hottest market during the next few years? AK: Clearly the mobile space in the past few years has gotten white-hot. Devices such as the iPhone have largely changed the mobile lifestyle; they have accepted that they can do much more than just make phone calls. Today’s smartphones are less like PDAs, personal digital assistants, and more like PDCs, personal digital companions. No matter where we go, our content and entertainment of choice goes with us. This makes SRS technology an essential component, because we can make any content sound absolutely incredible over a mobile device, whether it is a phone, laptop or netbook. We make everything sound its best. For more information, please visit SRS Labs at www.srslabs.com.

and operating voltages of less than 200 VDC makes the tower technician’s job faster, safer and easier. The safest feature of the new controller and power converter is location; both electronics are installed at ground level. Previously, the controller and power converter were located at various heights on the tower; maintenance and

government-regulated inspections meant numerous climbs annually. Now the advanced solution gives an 800-foot distance between the dual LED beacon and the controller/power converter combination. Flash Technology’s Director of Engineering, Chris Shumate, stated, “Compliance, safety and ease of use are always our priorities when creating new

products for the tower industry. With a 10-year life expectancy, simple installation and ground-based operation for the controller and power converter, I believe we have accomplished our goal.” For more information, contact Wade Collins at 615-503-2000 or wade.collins @spx.com or stop by booth 1857.
