ASHA Helps Parents Manage Technology Use
By Augustin Leung, Vice President, CUB Elecparts, Inc.
The NSC reported that 8.5 percent of fatalities are classified as “distraction-affected” by NHTSA. However, Heidi King of the NHTSA said the true number is probably higher. The reality is that on today’s roadways, drivers and pedestrians are more and more distracted. Factors such as connected devices, social media, streaming media and entertainment options make it easier, day by day. So does that mean that we, ourselves, are the reason that we have more accidents? Does that mean that we should also be charged with the responsibility to reduce the number of accidents on the roadways? According to the National Safety Council, 2018 did result in a slight reduction of fatalities by 1 percent. This is a positive move, as 2017 was one of the worst years on record in the last decade. But what else can we do? Technology seems to be the root of the problem; perhaps it can also be our savior as well. Just as much as there are products to distract us, there are also products to help us when we are

CEDN: The American-Speech-LanguageAssociation (ASHA) has been exhibiting annually at CES for more than a decade. In your view, what major changes have occurred with respect to safe and healthy usage of popular technology?
JC: There has been considerable change. When we first exhibited, personal digital technology was still very novel. It was all about using and enjoying the devices without much thought given to the impact of unsafe behavior, and how it could negatively affect hearing and speech. In fact, a lot of users probably didn’t even know that how they were using the devices was unsafe. In those days, ASHA was one of the very few voices raising concern. Now, not

As a homeowner and a mother of two young kids, I need to stay informed of the changing conditions in and around our home. Multitasking parents have the laundry going while the baby sleeps in the nursery and the preschooler plays out back ... am I right? With the help of AcuRite sensors, it’s easy to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for the whole family. I can monitor the baby’s
room to ensure ideal temperature and humidity for a safe sleeping environment, keep an eye on the UV index to know when to get those rascals out back to reapply the sunscreen, all from the convenience of my smartphone. With all AcuRite sensors communicating to AcuRite Access™, which is plugged into my router, all the data is pushed in real time to the My AcuRite app. This allows for remote monitoring, so I can simply check the My AcuRite app even when we are

Controlled Pyrolysis Cleaning Furnace from Pollution Control Pollution Control’s industrial cleaning furnaces (burn-off ovens) cover the entire spectrum of thermal stripping and heat cleaning technology. Safe and effective, they are capable of handling any combustible that can legally be removed with heat. Widely used in industry, Pollution Control burn-off ovens safely remove polymers, paints, powder coatings, adhesives, grease, insulation and chemicals from paint hangers and racks, engine blocks, electric motors, extrusion screws, breaker plates, dies, nozzles and many other metal parts and tooling. Virtually pollution-free, the company’s patented Controlled Pyrolysis® process eliminates all hydrocarbon emissions, and the use of
dangerous chemical strippers and other toxic materials. In today’s competitive manufacturing marketplace, production lines must be super efficient and pristine. Changes in process materials or colors, the build-up of polymers or simple routine maintenance require that equipment be thoroughly cleaned before it is returned to production. Repetitive manual cleaning will in time result in physical damage, not to mention injury to employees. Chemicals and abrasives may pose serious health and environmental consequences. Controlled Pyrolysis is a gentle process that extends the life of parts and tooling. Operating at 800-1,000 degrees

The Matias Backlit Wireless Aluminum Keyboard, which comes in silver or space gray, is a highend slim aluminum keyboard with number pad. It has the ability to pair to four different devices and easily switch between them. It features backlighting, with 10 levels of brightness control. Murata: Spotlight On Data Center Power An interview with Scott Klettke, Director of Business Development, Murata’s Connectivity Business Unit.
CEDN: Can you lend high-level perspective on the data center market?
SK: The industry is massive, complex and completely dynamic. As 5G, cloud, edge data deployment and AI applications gain significant traction, the demand for data centers soars. With that comes the need for advanced power management solutions. Consider this – it is estimated that four percent of our global energy consumption happens at the data center level. That is a massive swath. CEDN: What is the opportunity?
SK: Energy use is a major cost to operate
a datacenter. That is why many facilities are located where costs are lower, like the Pacific Northwest that has substantial hydro options or in cooler areas where A/C costs can be mitigated due to heat generated by processors, power supplies, etc. Given that, anything that we can do to improve efficiency will positively impact the market’s trajectory and benefit all stakeholders.
CEDN: What is Murata’s competency that can improve data centers’ efficiency?
SK: As a global technology leader, we approach this opportunity like we do all others – as engineering, packaging and material experts focused on innovation, collaboration and integration. If you follow Murata, you know that we con-

Bowling Brings Profitability and Guests to Casino Resorts Bowling is changing the landscape of what a destination casino resort can look like, according to Adam Saks, Chief Operating Officer of UltraStar Multitainment. “We strongly recommend bowling as a vital piece of the puzzle for those casinos who see an underserved entertainment market.” Saks has found that bowling serves local community members and resort guests while also generating impressive revenue for investors. UltraStar has partnered with Brunswick Bowling to include bowling in three Multi-tainment centers to date: at Ak-Chin Circle in Maricopa, Arizona; Harrah’s Cherokee Casino in Cherokee, North Carolina; and at Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino in Murphy, North Carolina. Bowling is an excellent choice for tribal casinos looking to diversify their offerings, provide more family-friend-
ly activities for members and keep guests on the property longer. Bowling is a proven revenue generator in its own right, while also boosting other revenue streams, including food and beverage. “What arose as an idea and request from our tribal elders has become a business that will sustain many in our community and region and provide another pastime for those in our communities and those visiting from other parts of the country,” said Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Principal Chief Richard G. Sneed. Saks has been impressed with the ways bowling has kept up with the times and the changing demands of today’s consumer. “The innovation in bowling products allows the modern bowling center to provide both affordable family fun and an
Consumer Electronics Daily News tinually push the limit on the levels of densification that we achieve. Because of that, we pack more highly efficient power into smaller spaces to handle more servers. CEDN: How does Murata accomplish this?
SK: We leverage our power supply architecture expertise and integrate world class capacitors and inductors to enable highly dense, flexible and configurable solutions. Additionally, they are extremely reliable. With required uptimes approaching five nines, builtin redundancy is an inherent part of this and something we deliver via instantaneous battery backup. That said, with such a broad portfolio of offerings, we integrate at a level where most cannot – like in our custom and OCP compliant racks, which and OpenSSL Cryptographic libraries. The template extraction and matching algorithms that run on the device are NIST MINEX certified. All of this power and functionality is packed into an ultra-slim profile not more than 12mm in thickness.
What does this mean for OEMs? We have always focused on delivering to our OEM partners the tools they need to compete successfully in this highly competitive industry. The U10-SF is a perfect example of this focus, as our team has worked long and hard on this product, to achieve three goals: to reduce the size of the sensor to our smallest ever; to merge a Single Board Computer with the fingerprint sensor module and embed an open Linux development environment; and, to drive the final product down to the lowest price in its class. Altogether, this resulted in a world class OEM sensor that’s unique in the industry and a major breakthrough that our OEM partners have been asking for exciting nightclub environment,” said Saks. “We are creating a boutique, cozy and elegant feel where customers can have fun with the entire family by enjoying great food, a full-service bar, a lounge and a state-ofthe-art visual experience, all of which drives the length of stay.” “It’s hard to find a more universally appealing activity than bowling,” Saks continued. “Bowling is multiplayer, interactive and even collaborative. The physical nature of the action and the excitement of healthy competition all aid in a comprehensive wellness goal the community has for its members. The bowling center is important to the community in many ways. First and foremost, it is a complete departure from gaming. It invigorates the young while energizing the elders. Our bowling center also makes a dramatic impact for the community
are comprised of class-leading power solutions. CEDN: What else do readers need to know?
SK: The double-digit growth of data centers and the sectors they encompass is astounding. However, what is even more extraordinary is how much more room there is to continue on this path. The projected expansion is limitless, especially when you factor in all the new facilities coming online, the proliferation of IoT and the expected leapfrogging of other technologies and their applications. Improving power efficiency will absolutely be a major operational challenge for the foreseeable future.

Trinseo ECO Plastics Offer up to 95 Percent Recycled Content Trinseo, a global supplier of plastics for consumer electronics, has seen the industry evolve from traditional PCs and big screen TVs to portable devices and electronic wearables. Now there’s a growing demand for sustainable, environmentally-friendly materials, and Trinseo is meeting this need head-on with its EMERGE™ ECO Advanced Resins – a portfolio of polycarbonate (PC) and PC/ABS resins that contain up to 95 percent post-consumer recycled (PCR) content. PCR content is the scrap or waste from consumer applications that is reclaimed, reprocessed and used again in new applications. With its EMERGE ECO series, Trinseo has mastered the process of combining virgin and PCR content to achieve the exact properties needed for an application. This includes
ultra-bright white and transparent options – both difficult to achieve with material other than virgin content. According to Trinseo, since its start with PCR materials nearly a decade ago, the company has overcome numerous challenges such as considerations of PCR feedstock availability, reliable sourcing and ways to balance material performance properties to ensure the integrity of the end-use application. There are also end-use applications that are acceptable for recycled content and some are not. For example, industries that are highly regulated or have strict requirements have limitations due to the variability in recycled resin content and the potential impact on material performance properties. In medical, for example, where biocompatibility is a strict requirement for patient-tissue contact applica-
Smart Parents Stay Ahead of the Weather By Kari Strenfel, AcuRite Meteorologist
As a meteorologist and an active mom with two young kids, I need to stay informed of the outdoor weather conditions to maintain our active lifestyle. Whether we are biking to the park, headed out on a family hike, or keeping it simple by playing in the backyard, I need to stay updated on the outdoor conditions year-round. Living in the San Francisco Bay Area, we can get outside mostly every weekend. In the summer, I
need to keep an eye on those high temperatures: a family hike is fun at 8 a.m. when it’s still 60 degrees Fahrenheit outside, but not so fun when it reaches 80 degrees Fahrenheit by 10 a.m. Even in the winter when it rains, we like to know how much rain we got overnight to decide if it’s a good day for puddle jumping! I rely on the AcuRite Atlas™ weather station that I mounted on my roof to stay updated on the changing weather conditions. With the weather
MingFeng Introduces Biomass Composites, Products By Aaron Thom, Senior Designer
MingFeng is known for its intelligent designs and its manufacturing of ecofriendly packaging. Now we have taken the next step by introducing biomass composites and products into our offering. Biomass composites are essentially organic substances which are combined with a bio-base. The two principal features of biomass composites are that they are produced by utilizing organic sub-
stances and that at the end of their functional lifetime as a product, they can be broken down, as they are either partially or completely degradable, according to the composite. We use grains, fibers, husks and organic products to form pellets. These can then go through extrusion, co-extrusion or injection processes to produce packaging and other very useful commodities. Our biomass composites have achieved a number of safety certifica-

tions, recycled material is not acceptable; in automotive applications that provide structural support, recycled material may not be possible if there is an impact on mechanical properties that would affect safety. A common misperception regarding recycled resins, says Trinseo, is that material with recycled content will be less costly since its content is partially used material. In reality, there are a number of additional and more complex steps involved in PCR material creation, ranging from additional development time to ensure mechanical performance, to additional cleaning and processing steps, to added quality control. Despite the effort involved, it is encouraging, says Trinseo, to see the impact PCR materials make. Recently Trinseo engaged thinkstep, a sustainability consulting, software and data organization, to perform lifecycle analysis on its EMERGE ECO Advanced Resins station reporting to the AcuRite Access™, which is plugged into the router, all the weather data is reported to My AcuRite. This allows me to check the weather conditions from anywhere from the My AcuRite app on my smartphone. compared with virgin materials. Parameters evaluated were EMERGE ECO grades vs. virgin resins relative to the difference in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and the difference in water and energy consumption. In all cases, Trinseo PCR-containing resins had a reduced environmental impact. Trinseo’s EMERGE ECO Advanced Resins are available as opaque, transparent, without bromine and chorine additives and with glass filler. This enables the material to be used in a wide range of consumer electronics applications such as enclosures of products and accessories, powered parts, packaging and dividers, and even semi-structural parts.

TPMS: Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems By Augustin Leung, Vice President, CUB Elecparts, Inc.
Flat tires, nobody likes them. Blow outs, even worse. Uneven tire wear, costly and inconvenient. Good driver practices and tire pressure monitoring systems help better the situation. A tire blow-out costs not only the tire, the inconvenience, potential body damage and wheel damage, but possibly a loss of control which could have a devastating outcome. Most blow-outs occur because the tire is underinflated, or overloaded, both causing the tire temperature to rise beyond its working range and ultimately failing.
Passenger vehicles have had federal requirements to install them since late 2007. This means that nearly everyone on the road shouldn’t have a good reason to have a blowout. Then why does it still happen? The primary reason for continued tire failures is typically a malfunctioning or misfunctioning TPMS system. “TPMS sensors typically need to be replaced every three years and are recommended to be replaced before they fail,” states Andy Tseng, ITM’s TPMS Director. “During tire changes is ideal as the additional labor is minimal.” ITM TPMS sensors are available to
A Resource for Healthy Tech Use Looking for tips to manage your child’s popular technology use? Know someone who is? Check out www.communicationandtech.org, a site designed to help the public use popular technology in ways that protect their communication health. The site reflects an initiative of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), since 2006 a leading advocate about the importance of safe use of popular tech. What makes it so important? On the hearing side, repeated use of popular tech for extended periods at high volume – a
usage habit that polling has consistently shown to be widespread – can result in noise-induced hearing loss, an irreversible condition. Otherwise, as very young children have come to be tech users, a newer worry has arisen about the impact of that usage on the development of their speech and language skills. Engagement in conversation – a critical way of fostering that development – may be taking a back seat to tech use. When ASHA did national polling of parents of children 0-8, they reported a lessening in conversation at
Boost Omni-Channel Marketing Using Informed Visibility Data When researching a possible purchase, consumers are known to use a mix of online and offline channels. In response, businesses are beginning to expand their tactics to reach consumers where they are, on- and offline. But beyond just reaching customers on both digital and direct media channels, marketers must also synchronize and align campaign exposures to encourage action at the optimal time. With supportive technology, such as the Informed Visibility® feature from the U.S. Postal Service®, businesses can
bridge the gap between messages seen digitally on screen and physically in hand. This feature applies near–real time tracking data to direct-mail deliveries, allowing marketers the ability to determine the anticipated day of delivery to a prospective customer.
Here’s how it works: First, a business sends a mailpiece to a prospective customer. This might be retargeted direct mail, triggered based on a customer’s online interaction with the brand, or any other mail campaign.
The Expansions of Original Parts Group Determined to supply Chevelle and El Camino parts to GM enthusiasts and others in the restoration industry, Dave Leonard, President and Founder of Original Parts Group, started a new enterprise out of a two-car garage in Santa Ana, California, named Chevelle Classics. He found very quickly that he would need more space and moved his business into a larger garage. As the product line grew to over 5,000 parts and accessories, the garage was no longer cutting it. Chevelle Classics moved into its third location, a warehouse large enough to house an enormous amount of product for its growing product line. Chevelle Classics continued to invest in manufacturing, as its number
one goal and focus was to produce the largest selection of reproduction parts for Chevelle and El Camino enthusiasts. As its product line continued to expand, Chevelle Classics was forced to pack up and relocate on multiple occasions. By June of 1990, it was in its sixth location and its product line had grown to over 20,000 different restoration and high-performance parts. In 1994, parts and accessories were added for Pontiac (GTO, Tempest and Lemans) and Chevelle Classics now had the largest selection of in-stock classic GM restoration parts in the United States. With multiple product lines now available, Dave found it necessary to give his company a more suitable name, and Chevelle Classics officially became Original Parts

The programming of the sensors eliminates the need for excessive inventory. Misfunctioning systems are often easily solved by resetting reference values or simple programming of the system. The ITM programming tool is capable of diagnostics, reprogramming and measurements. ITM TPMS products are not only available for genuine equipment replacement, but retrofit upgrades as well. These applications include motorcycles, passenger cars, trucks, recreational vehicles and buses. Kits are
available in a variety of configurations to include smartphone apps, multifunction displays and resistant displays. weather Anything between two to 24 wheels can be covered by ITM retrofit TPMS systems. ITM retrofit systems feature additional information and features that are typically not offered by original equipment systems. Features include tire temperature monitoring to warn against blowouts due to overloading, blowout alarm when sudden tire pressure loss is detected, and trailer battery voltage for trailer specific applications.

home. In short, unless habits change, a portion of the public may eventually acquire hearing loss or experience stunted speech and language skills – conditions that can hinder one in key respects academically, in the world of work and socially, and harm one’s quality of life overall. This is why for more than a decade, ASHA spread the word about safe usage through a wide variety of tactics: safe listening concerts in schools around the country; nationally disseminated PSAs; numerous media interviews in which ASHA member audiologists and speech-
language pathologists have shared their expertise; article placements and posts; and Twitter parties and Facebook Live! broadcasts. However, the message of safe usage stills needs to be spread: The World Health Organization estimates unsafe use of popular tech is contributing to 1.1 billion young people around the world being at risk of noise-induced hearing loss.
After the mail is sent, it is scanned at a Post Office™ facility and entered into the Informed Visibility tracking system. When the mailpiece reaches its intended destination area, the final scan alerts the sender on their Informed Visibility dashboard that the mail is out for delivery. With this valuable data, marketers can coordinate complementary digital campaigns to connect with customers on multiple channels. The service makes omni-channel campaigns easier to plan and execute. Deploying digital marketing at the optimal time based on mail delivery data improves the effectiveness of each indi-
vidual touchpoint. Plus, additional exposures can make marketing messages resonate more effectively with potential customers. Marketing campaigns work better together. They can deliver a stronger impact and higher value to customers and streamline internal processes for more measurable results and returns. The Informed Visibility feature is one of many powerful innovations that USPS has developed to help businesses strengthen their marketing. Learn more about all of these future-ready technologies by visiting USPS at CES.
Group, Inc. Year after year, Dave continued to introduce new product lines for Oldsmobile in 2001 and for Buick in 2002, offering many “restoration industry firsts” including injection molded interior parts, aluminum and chrome moldings and bright trim. It was then that sales tripled for Original Parts Group. Towards the end of 2002, OPGI found itself relocating to its seventh location, this time tripling in size to 54,000 square feet to house 50-plus employees and a growing inventory. Five short years later with 100 plus employees and over 50,000 in-stock parts and accessories, OPGI moves to its eighth and largest location. The new facility is over 100,000 square feet and capable of 250,000 square
feet with mezzanine. In 2009, OPGI added a new product line to address the needs of classic Cadillac enthusiasts, and then in 2010 came parts for Buick Riviera. A year later, the Pontiac Grand Prix, Bonneville and Catalina product lines were added with the Buick Grand National, T-Type and Regal product pushed in 2016. Last year, OPGI was thrilled to announce that it was working hard on expanding its Cadillac line. The new expansion covers CTS, STS, ATS, XLR and even Escalade/EXT models for all years up to the present day.

only has the number of concerned groups increased, but also the number of individuals, including parents, educators and CES attendees themselves. Our polling of them shows them to be pretty conservative about popular tech use. For example, according to one poll of 200 attendees to CES 2018, almost 70 percent said children should not have their own personal technology devices until age 10 or older; nearly one-third (30 percent) said children should not use popular tech devices until age 10 or older. Today, there is greater awareness of some of the potential risks involved in unsafe use of popular technology. Yet, CUB Elecparts (Cont’d. from p. 1)

There is technology to help us be more careful and aware of our surroundings.” Nien introduces CUB’s new Commercial Wide Turn Assist BSD System. These resins are made up of in part virgin plastics and in part recycled material with the virgin content being a plastic from a petrochemical feedstock such as gas or crude oil and the PCR content being reclaimed after leaving the consumer. According to WHO, unsafe use of what they refer to as personal audio devices is contributing to 1.1 billion young people worldwide being at risk of acquiring noise-induced hearing loss. CEDN: What is behind the concern?
JC: On the hearing side, repeated use of popular tech for extended periods at high volume – a usage habit that polling has consistently shown to be widespread – can result in noise-induced hearing loss, an irreversible condition.
in large truck crashes in 2017. Seventeen percent of these deaths were truck occupants, 68 percent were occupants of cars and other passenger vehicles, and 14 percent were pedestrians, bicyclists or motorcyclists. The number of people who died in large truck crashes was 30 percent higher in 2017 than in 2009. The same year, nearly 298 billion miles were covered by trucks in the United States. Sixty-seven percent of the fatalities occurred on roads other than interstates and freeways. The number of

A common misperception regarding recycled resins, says Trinseo, is that material with recycled content will be less costly since its content is partially used material. In reality, there are a number of additional and more complex steps involved in PCR material creation ranging from additional development time to ensure mechanical performance, to additional cleaning and processing steps, to added quality control. Despite the effort involved, Trinseo

Engagement in conversation – a proven and critical way of fostering that development – may be taking a back seat to tech use. When we did national polling of parents of children 08, they reported a lessening in conversation at home. In short, a portion of the public may eventually acquire hearing loss or experience stunted speech and language skills – conditions that can hinder one in key respects academically, in the world of work and socially, and harm one’s quality of life overall.

CEDN: Why should CES attendees stop by the ASHA booth?
JC: No doubt there is overlap between the public we have polled over the years and the customers or potential customers of companies here at CES. The polling shows many parents struggle managing their children’s popular technology use. ASHA offers informed, practical, easyto-implement guidance that can help with that management as it promotes health and safety. We invite attendees to learn more at ASHA’s booth.
