Singsation Karaoke and Party Systems Dominate the Category

Singsation Karaoke, a brand by Voxx Accessories Corporation, made a huge splash in the category in 2017 with its 5-in-1 Solo Deluxe microphone, and had national big box sell-through last year with karaoke systems ranging from $30 to $300. For 2019, it has announced even more innovation with five new systems, filling voids from $50 to $130 while keeping the massive pro model at $300. Singsation leads the category in professional voice tuning, the most integrated sound effects and the largest room-filling light shows on board. Identifying the pain points of either buying karaoke music or subscribing to a service, Singsation took a different approach, making the smartphone or tablet the music source through free YouTube karaoke videos. Literally millions of lyrical tracks are available, and it keeps Singsation customers from having to buy any CDs or download and transfer videos into the machine. Recently, Voxx announced a strategic partnership with Speak Music and the Melody app, which allows your voice to simply ask for the track or artist as it procures and plays it automatically Continued on Page 12

Comtech: Communication Solutions for a Connected World

An interview with Jay Whitehurst, President, Comtech Enterprise Technologies. WW: What’s the most significant change in location-based technologies this year?

JW: The industry has traditionally leveraged Location Based Services (LBS) for public safety applications and emergency services. We are seeing a second increasing market vertical as enterprises adopt location intelligence applications to improve their business effectiveness. We expect this coupled with the rise of IOT devices and sensors in both verticals will increase the need for LBS. The virtualization of network functions for LBS was required by customers as part of essentially every new bid by Comtech; in 2019, the company booked 17 virtualized deployments, many of which are complete. The company’s virtualized platform is deployed with many Tier1 mobile network operators (MNOs) around the world.

Trinseo Provides Plastics for Smart Outlet

Trinseo plastics are intrinsic to the products we use in our lives every day. One of these products is the new smart outlet from Currant, a California-based startup that creates smart home products designed to give consumers control over their homes – and their energy consumption. Currant introduced the Currant Smart Outlet, the first outlet on the market powered by artificial intelligence (AI), in November 2018. Consumers simply plug their home devices or appliances into it and, with a special app, receive a breakdown of their power usage in real time as well as personalized, easy-to-implement suggestions on controlling their energy expenses. According to Hasty Granbery, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Currant, “Idle energy usage resulting from always-on devices is a larger problem than most people realize, costing Americans 19 billion dollars per year.” Currant addresses this problem by leveraging AI to help people discover their home energy offenders, so they can cut excess electricity usage without Continued on Page 12

How to Help Continue the Mission of Cell Phones for Soldiers By Rob Bergquist, Founder and Director, Cell Phones for Soldiers

We’re proud of the work we do at Cell Phones for Soldiers to connect and support our troops and veterans in need. Since 2004, we have worked to make a difference in the lives of the brave men and women who serve (and have served) our country in uniform. And we couldn’t do it without our donors. Thousands of individuals and organizations have powered Cell Phones for Soldiers to help others, by donating old cell phones and other mobile devices and raising money for our cause. Donors understand the meaningful work we’ve done for the last 15 years, and we’d like to share some of the reasons you should give to Cell Phones for Soldiers to help us continue our mission.

We recognize the challenges our veterans face. The transition to civilian life can be mentally, physically and emotionally stressful, and veterans are unemployed at a higher rate than nonveterans. Sometimes that means they can’t meet financial obligations – utility bills, rent, communication costs – and need a little boost.

Our Helping Heroes Home program has provided one-time grants to more than 3,000 veterans. We believe that our veterans are owed a lifetime of support for their work protecting our country.

We help our troops stay connected with their loved ones. Though international calling is less of a hassle than it was when we first started, many deployed troops find that having a personal phone is impossible during a tour, either because of cost or security reasons. Our Minutes That Matter program has given more than 350 million minutes (and counting!) on calling cards to deployed men and women so they can call home. Maintaining connections with home during a deployment is critical to morale and to reassuring families at home.

We’re green! Last year, Cell Phones for Soldiers received our R2 certification which allows us to receive, sort, test, data erase and responsibly downstream donated devices. Cell Phones for Soldiers both repurposes used devices and gives them to veterans in need and recycles them for their valuable parts that can be sold and reused. This serves a number of environ-

Creating a Winning Customer Experience By Simon Sundberg, Head of Demand Generation OSS/BSS, Ericsson

“You’re not too young for this position, frankly, I would be more worried if you were my age!” The regional Senior Vice President smiled at me. I was five months into heading up Ericsson’s client marketing engagement organization in Southeast Asia, and not entirely sure I was the right person for the job. He continued to explain to me that our clients across the region – the mobile operators – served a young consumer base. The median age in Southeast Asia is 29. I was 32 at the time. When you do something for the first time, you’ll make mistakes, and I was

certainly no exception. But my age suggested that I could relate to the expectations of both Generation X and Y. That taught me something about recruitment, and the first point I’d like to make. People are part of your essential infrastructure to create a successful business, and it starts with leaders who can choose the right people. I assume that we don’t know the best use cases for 5G yet, and that we haven’t even discovered all the opportunities we can make possible through LTE. Some of you may remember when 3G arrived. All operators promoted video calling, which almost no consumer used. The best opportunities for mobile operators are ahead and this means the

Mitsubishi Electric Introduces Robust Driver Monitoring System Mitsubishi Electric, a leading manufacturer of in-vehicle entertainment, navigation systems and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) technologies, announced that it has developed the first in-vehicle monitoring system with a single wide-angle camera to detect both the driver and front passenger simultaneously. Conventional in-vehicle monitoring systems generally use a single camera to analyze the driver’s face for drowsiness or distraction. More recent imaging systems monitor the driver as well as the front passenger, but require several cameras. Mitsubishi Electric has refined this concept by developing a technology that

uses just one wide-angle camera to identify both the face and hand gestures of driver and front passenger. This allows OEMs to offer a range of safety and personalization features at a lower cost. “Monitoring both front-seat occupants not only lets us check driver-centric safety behavior, but also allows us to support additional gesture inputs for in-cab systems such as climate control or audio,” says Mark Vogel, Senior Product Development Manager at Mitsubishi Electric Automotive America. “Providing a mix of safety and convenience features within the same monitoring system is critical as the line between those disciplines continue to blur.”

Wireless World mentally friendly purposes: it keeps electronic waste from landfills, where harmful materials can cause damage to human health and fragile ecosystems; recycling plastic helps us do our part to keep non-biodegradable material out of our oceans; and recycling the rare earth metals used in electronic devices reduces the need for mining. To date, we have recycled more than 15 million mobile devices!

It’s easy to give. You can contribute to Cell Phones for Soldiers by donating money directly and securely through our website, or by sending us your old cell phones and mobile devices. You can either print off a shipping label and send in your recycled items or find one of our more than 4,000 drop-off sites by doing a location search. Cell Phones for Soldiers is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and we rely on your tax-deductible donations to connect our country’s bravest men and women. Even a small donation makes a difference – give today!

best offers have yet to be invented. If the assumption that the best is yet to come is true, the most future-proof platform is the platform that will give mobile operators the freedom and agility to experiment and try new things, at a cost that’s as low as possible. You don’t want to spend weeks in configuration, or maybe even months in development, just to find out that your new offer doesn’t fly. Ericsson BSS and Dynamic Orchestration solutions help mobile operators to drive this transformation, and dramatically lowers the cost of screwing up. Established and documented processes are crucial to move towards automated operations. When you can automate the back end

With features in development to monitor upper body position and detect slumping or collapsing, this technology may soon be able to identify medical emergencies, such as a heart attack or stroke. In such circumstances, the vehicle could take immediate action by dialing emergency services or even rerouting to a nearby hospital. Active safety monitoring systems like this will become especially important as we evolve toward the selfdriving car.

Virtual Reality Sound: What is It? Why Do You Want It? By John Kasha, Chief Executive Officer of KAI Technology Inc.

We all hear sound differently. Maybe it’s background noise, or just enjoying the artist’s creativity either with their instruments or voice. Sometimes, we struggle to hear something creative in the mix we like and raise the

volume up to hear it, but it doesn’t help. Introducing the m.e.™, a small device that boosts, expands and takes your listening experience to a whole new dimension in sound. Here’s how it works. The m.e. brings all the hidden details of a

ASHA Continues to Promote Healthy Use of Popular Technology Recently, the American SpeechLanguage-Hearing Association (ASHA) launched the Healthy Communication & Popular Technology Initiative (www .communicationandtech.org), which encourages moderate use of popular technology. It focuses on providing practical advice to individuals and families to develop responsible popular tech habits; conducting communication health awareness campaigns that promote balanced use of popular technology; and exploring the impact of popular technology usage on healthy speech, language and hearing. These efforts are not anti-technology nor are they the first time ASHA has been

a national leader in the area of safe usage of popular technology. As far back as 2006, ASHA commissioned a large-scale national survey about the listening habits of teens and adults who used personal electronic devices that documented widespread misuse within both groups (ASHA, 2006). Media coverage was worldwide. For the next decade, ASHA encouraged safe listening through its awardwinning “Listen to Your Buds” campaign. Using a variety of tactics, including its safe listening concert series, which took place in elementary and middle schools across the country, the

song to life so you can hear everything. It’s like being in the recording studio. It’s an immersive experience. You really feel like you are actually there, on stage, with the musicians. The m.e. gives your music depth, dimension and definition making your listening experience the best it can be. For example, you’re listening to a great song you have heard hundreds of times, but since the instruments or background vocals have been compromised for MP3, you don’t even realize you are

missing out on half the music. m.e. revives your music so you now hear more of the song’s original arrangements. Instruments suddenly appear in the mix, vocals pop, the music sounds alive. m.e. can be used on every piece of audio equipment in your life. From headsets to car stereos, home entertainment to in-flight infotainment, the m.e. will change the way you hear sound forever.

Throughout, ASHA received support from the Consumer Technology Association and others, and collaborated with groups like the National Institutes of Health. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognized the Buds campaign as an effective public education tool. As the “Listen to Your Buds” campaign approached its 10-year anniversary, one thing was clear: The issue of popular technology and communication implications encompassed more than hearing loss. Changes in Lifestyle Means Changes in Security By Ashlee Campbell, Marketing Consultant, Alpha Guardian

Lifestyles have changed. People are now choosing to live in shared spaces, condos or other multi-family housing arrangements, retirees are downsizing and young homeowners are embracing “tiny homes.” These lifestyle changes have created a unique need for a secure place to store valuables, electronics and important documents that is unable to be met by traditional home safes. So, what has Stack-On done to meet this arising need? To answer that question, we sat down with Shelley Nehrt, Director of Product Categories for Alpha Guardian, to talk about the distinctive features of our new Total Defense Dual Home Safe.

For starters, the new Dual Safe offers two separate secure storage compartments; one compartment provides convenient, quick access to items used daily while the second area offers fireproof storage for valuables and documents used less frequently. “This new Dual Safe by Stack-On is the only safe on the market today that incorporates an external, auto open drawer in the body of the safe,” Nehrt said. “Other notable features include an internal light in the auto open drawer, an alarm that sounds after three incorrect entries, factory installed door storage for better organization and a spacious, fully carpeted fireproof area with adjusted shelves.” “The small footprint of the Dual Safe allows it to fit in a closet, bedroom

Waterproof Electronics: A Fairy Tale? Once upon a time, it was commonly known that the only way your mobile phone could possibly survive being dropped in water was to immediately turn it off, remove the battery and then place the phone in a bowl of rice overnight to dry it out. Flash forward several years and “waterproof” phones are the new standard. How can a device with so many openings and fragile electrical components possibly be waterproof? Smartphone manufacturers use a variety of sealing techniques to make sure all potential points of least resistance are watertight. Sometimes sealing is as straight forward as strategically using glue in the connection ports or to secure the glass to the phone. Areas like the cable connectors may use rubber gaskets,

while headphone jacks and charging ports use rubber rings to seal the enclosures. Smartphone buttons often have a silicon rubber boot to separate the button from the electrical contacts within the phone. On areas that need to keep water out but let air pass through, like microphones and speakers, manufacturers use a water-resistant breathable mesh fabric membrane to act as a pressure vent. Sometimes ports, like the charging port, can be protected from water electronically by being made of corrosion resistant metals and programmed to automatically shut off when not in use. These seals all need to go through rigorous quality testing. The most important type of testing for the waterproofing process is leak testing.

Save Power and Money with ReLamp LEDs The ReLamp LEDs are available in sizes for most common fresnels. In some fixtures, the reflector should be unscrewed to make room for the LED. The ReLamp LEDs work on the same AC dimmers as halogen. The light looks just like tungsten halogen, but

without the heat. It is also available in daylight. Both have very high quality color rendering. Regardless of how it is measured, the color looks right on all faces, makeup, wardrobe – just like the tried and true halogen. For a list price under $700, the

or other location aligning with today’s lifestyle trends. Available in two different sizes, 40 inches and 48 inches tall, the height of these safes provides a convenient drop off point for keys, wallets or other things typically carried in pockets or purses,” Nehrt said. “The flexibility of the Dual Safe lends itself to people who need secure storage that works for them.” Even after hearing about the innovative and beneficial features of the Dual Safe, you may still be asking yourself why anyone should consider safeguarding their valuables with a home safe. “Consider this: In 2016, there were over 750,000 burglaries in the U.S., with most lasting no more than 12 to 15 minutes,” said Nehrt, citing Pew Research Center. “In the past few years, sales of home security cameras, doorbell cameras and other security devices have explod-

ed. But why stop at seeing who is breaking into your home? Wouldn’t you prefer to have another layer of security that actually prevented an unwanted intruder from stealing what is most important to you?” In the end, it’s all about peace of mind and knowing that your valuables are safe and secure from unwanted intruders, friend or foe. As our lifestyles continue to change, so must our attitudes on security. We no longer live in a time where your money, credit cards, electronics, jewelry or other valuables are safe, hidden away in your sock drawer or in a shoe box.

LCD display. Once connected to the La Crosse View app, your alarm will display the day’s forecasted highs and lows, percent chance of precipitation, dynamic forecast icons and also allows you to post personal messages on your display, thanks to the powerful data stream technology. If none of the connected features sound interesting to you, no problem! The enhanced features are totally optional and your alarm will function as a standalone unit without connecting to the app. It is important to note that some of the coolest features of this alarm come from its connected capability. While these connected features are great on their own, the true power of this clock lies in its ability to add any compatible

La Crosse View add-on sensors. With or without the La Crosse View app, you’ll have the option to expand your system with numerous sensors for a complete home monitoring solution. From true backyard wind, rain, temperature and humidity data, to indoor water leak detection and more, you’ll be able to view this information right on your alarm’s screen. The add-on sensor information is also viewable on the La Crosse View app, so you can set alerts and track trends on the go. La Crosse Technology – bringing you the information that matters most to you…anytime, anywhere.

Waterproof smartphone manufacturers have dozens of leak testers, like ATEQ’s F28 lite, throughout their production lines to test the phone at various points during the assembly process. As each port is added to the phone, it can be leak tested with a differential pressure decay leak tester. This technology pressurizes the part with compressed air and measures the pressure drop, which would signify the air leak rate in that port. Once the phone is completely assembled and the screen is secured, it can be leak tested with ATEQ’s sealed component ingress leak testing method. By putting the completed sealed phone into an airtight chamber, the chamber can be pressurized with compressed air and the leak tester can measure if any air sinks into the phone. If a leak amount that is below the manufacturer-specified leak rate sinks in, the phone can be considered

airtight enough to be classified as being “waterproof.” So are waterproof phones really the fairy tale they seem to be? Depends on your fairy tale. There are limitations to the term “waterproof.” Typically it means the phone can survive droplets of water and being gently submerged in a few feet of fresh water for a decent amount of time. Degrees of waterproofness vary depending on pressure and corrosive chemicals. So while you can now confidently finish emails in the rain, listen to podcasts in the shower and release your fears of the previouslytreacherous toilet drop, don’t plan on tweeting while scuba diving deep in the salty ocean.

ReLamp 1K is what most have been waiting for. It’s certainly more than a halogen globe, but given the estimated 50,000 hour lifetime, one ReLamp LED compares to about $5,000 worth of halogen bulbs that would have to be purchased over that same 50,000 hours. A newsroom can now upgrade to LED with no downtime. The process of installing the ReLamp LEDs is only a

JW: There are three factors which affect this: product depth and breath, understanding of our customer environment

and business needs and anticipation of emerging market needs. Comtech is gaining market share in LBS by capturing new greenfield opportunities and displacing competitors. Comtech’s ability to customize platforms means we are meeting customers’ needs in a way that our competition cannot. Our platform presents a complete LBS offering to MNOs, as well as a reduced cost due to virtualization. In the past 12 months, Comtech has implemented unique routing and positioning services on its virtualized LBS platform for Canadian emergency services and Text-to-911, and similarly for U.S. operators. Both routing and positioning services for the Canadian MNOs are on a single in-network LBS deployment.

singers of any age can just say what they want to sing next, and it will play – no typing, browsing or delays in the fun. Ian Geise, President of Singsation, explains, “The Melody Karaoke App by Speak Music coupled with Singsation’s second

Resins, which are specialty engineered performance plastics, have been designed to meet the exacting specifications for Currant including cosmetic, reliability and UL-driven safety requirements. Among the reasons Currant selected Trinseo as a partner was because of the company’s color matching capability, including its ability to achieve an ultrabright white. The company has research and development centers globally, including color labs with expertise in complex colors. Color is such an important factor today for product differentiation, branding and end-user satisfaction and Trinseo is recognized globally for its

capability. Trinseo supports various consumeroriented markets with specialty engineered plastics solutions. The company supports the growing consumer technologies sector with advanced material solutions including projects that involve biocompatible plastics for skin contact applications, chemical resistant materials, transparent light diffusion grades to allow for translucent LED displays, and plastics with recycled content to support sustainability goals. As consumer technologies evolve, product developers and designers need to consider materials that they may not have considered in the past. Plastics

have emerged as an important solution to new-product challenges in that they enable properties such as portability, durability and appealing aesthetics while allowing additional characteristics such as biocompatibility, ignition and chemical resistance, and/or various degrees of transparency. Trinseo, the global manufacturer and compounder of performance plastics, has been helping customers find just the right solution. Trinseo is proud to be a partner of Currant.

ket. With our rapidly growing global customer base, Comtech has proven competence in meeting the challenge of solution capabilities and the wide variety of customer demands. Additionally, from an MNO perspective, location instantiation has been traditionally confined to the core of the network. The advent of 5G will push location instantiation towards the edge largely due to network densification and latency. Our 5G roadmap addresses all these needs.

WW: How are you able to meet each customer’s unique needs?

JW: As technologies have progressed from 2G, 3G and 4G to today’s complex 5G world, Comtech has developed a comprehensive suite of unparalleled capabilities on its LBS platforms. Our feature-rich platform, advanced technological implementations, combined with our highly reliable service levels, separate us from the competition. We stand ready to satisfy the dynamic and ever-growing need for 5G LBS systems and dynamics in the market it will facilitate.
