With the surge in demand for third-party delivery, and as the safety of delivered food is more important than ever as the world deals with the COVID-19 crisis, tamper-evident labels have taken on a more prominent role in the restaurant industry. Most restaurant operators and consumers alike are familiar with tamper-evident labels and seals. Everyday items such as over-the-counter drugs, food items, packaging materials, cleaning solutions and laundry products now often employ this method of security. Many manufacturers are now required to use these labels on their products. Here are some key things to know about these labels.

These were the early days when the CB300 was still in the development stages. Between that time and today, well over 4,000 block makers have been sold not only in every state in the U.S., but globally as well. Eventually Virgil retired fully and his daughter Brenda (Clinebell) Seaman, came back to join Mike in the family business. High-Traffic Establishments Require High-Speed XLERATOR Hand Dryers Arooga’s Grille House & Sports Bar, the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania-based restaurant brand, was named the first full-service Certified Green Restaurant® in Pennsylvania by the Green Restaurant Association (GRA). To achieve this rating and to reduce its carbon footprint, Arooga’s implemented a number of green initiatives, including the removal of polystyrene foam from all locations, changing its cleaning products and including high-speed, energy efficient XLERATOR® Hand Dryers in all restrooms.

Every day of the week, each of Arooga’s 10 locations serves between 4,000 and 7,000 customers, and the XLERATOR capably stands up to this high traffic. Drying hands in 8 seconds, the XLERATOR not only moves patrons in and out of the restroom quickly – and back to their table or the bar for additional patronage – they help cut labor and maintenance costs. The XLERATOR represents a 95 percent cost savings when compared to paper towels, eliminating their labor, maintenance and waste.

JS: Seviroli offers a large portfolio of products, including tortellini, ravioli, manicotti, stuffed shells, cavatelli, readyto-eat meal kits, sauces and more. We also

Sprouted Grain Breads from Food For Life Baking Food For Life Baking Co., maker of the incredibly delicious and nutritious Ezekiel 4:9® Sprouted Grain Bread, has been committed to the health of its customers since its inception over 50 years ago. Among the many natural sprouted grain breads are its widely popular Ezekiel 4:9 and Genesis 1:29® breads, English muffins, tortillas, buns and cereal. Sprouting maximizes digestibility and nutrition while lowering the glycemic index in its flourless bakery products. Beyond the commitment to superior nutrition, there’s also a commitment to a balanced and protected pH in every loaf. Why is a balanced pH so important? Because Food For Life recognizes that a balanced pH is absolutely essential for optimum health. This is why Food For Life meticulously chooses its ingredients and refuses

to use acidifying agents such as cultured wheat starch, vinegar, calcium propionate and ascorbic acid – all preservatives As an amazing benefit of sprouting, grains actually become more alkaline as water and oxygen support the growth of the new plant and naturally balances the pH. While a balanced pH is great for health reasons, helping protect against disease and illness, a higher pH does tend to shorten shelf life. This is why the company primarily sells Food For Life breads frozen. Since its Ezekiel breads have become so popular, the company is seeing more competitors now releasing sprouted grain breads, though using acidifying agents like vinegar and cultured wheat starch to extend their shelf life. Unfortunately, these ingredients lower the pH, by increasing the acidity which

GZ: The mission of Dream Pretzels as a company and brand is to bring innovation and better-for-you products to the traditional snack market. We offer everything the consumer wants – great taste, better nutrition, more accessibility and transparency.

RDN: What drove the decision to add a protein-based product to your portfolio?

GZ: At Dream Pretzels, we are constantly following nutrition new trends in the world and saw increased emphasis on

plant-based diets as well as a marketplace need for protein, which drove the idea of creating a legume-based pretzel for our product portfolio. New Protein Pressels and Pretzel Twists feature 5 grams of plant-based protein per serving in a snack that’s as perfect for athletes as it is for lunchboxes, busy lifestyles and board rooms. RDN: How did you come up with the idea for Protein Pressels and Pretzel Twists?

GZ: We saw a very large marketplace need for this type of product. Consumers – everyone from those engaged in sports to parents looking to give their kids a snack with higher nutritional value – are looking for new and innovative ways to get protein into their diet, but without

Restaurant Daily News Food For Life feels often defeats the purpose of sprouting in the first place. To be a truly healthful product, Food For Life strongly believes in protecting the pH level of its sprouted grain bread, targeting a balanced pH. We saw the opportunity and are very happy and proud to have succeeded in developing a product that will meet this need.

RDN: What drove your innovation in this area and how long was the product development phase?

GZ: It took two years to develop this product. During the process we tried many types of legume flour, high-protein flours and other ingredients to ensure not only excellent nutrition quality, but good shelf life and great taste. We do not compromise on taste or quality.

RDN: What are your plans to further expand the protein-based product line?

GZ: We are very excited about this product and are already working to expand our offering. We’re looking at both new and innovative ingredients such as other high-protein flours as well

Bone Suckin’ Sauce from Ford’s Gourmet Foods When the Ford family decided to sell their family’s secret sauce more than 25 years ago, they thought it would be a sentimental addition to the gourmet foods side of their fourth generation family produce business. And so, Bone Suckin’ Sauce (BSS) was born. A Western North Carolina style, tomato-based sauce sweetened with real

What’s the real secret of the secret sauce? “It comes down to simple, honest ingredients. We offered a gluten free, no high fructose corn syrup, non-GMO, delicious sauce long before it was the trendy thing to do,” said Ford. “And in every product since, we have stuck to that philosophy, and that matters to our customers.” BSS has been rated No. 1 by Food and Wine Magazine, Newsweek Magazine and recognized by countless other competitions and news outlets. The product offering has expanded over the years to include variety of sauces and marinades, seasonings and rubs, and a spicy and a sweet mustard, both of which were recently named National Champions by Illinois Barbecue Society. “The accolades from the industry and the press are nice, but what really matters to us is what our customers say,” adds Ford. “We get messages from customers all the time – multiple generations enjoying BSS at a family barbecue or customers with celiac disease being able

“is one having one or more indicators or barriers to entry which, if breached or missing, can reasonably be expected to provide visible evidence to consumers that tampering has occurred.”

What is the “visible evidence” that a tamper-evident seal provides? This may vary by type and manufacturer. TamperSeal labels, manufactured by DayMark Safety Systems and approved for indirect food contact, pair an aggressive adhesive that works on packaging for both hot and cold food items with security slits that tear if someone attempts to open the container. This makes it visibly obvious the package has been opened. Waring (Cont’d. from p. 1)

Models designed with a hot water faucet offer the added benefit of supplying hot water for soups, cereals and drinks with the press of a lever. The thermal brewer is Clinebell (Cont’d. from p. 1)

the name Clinebell was becoming more synonymous with clear ice and impeccable customer service. 2008 hit Clinebell hard. There was talk of waving that all too familiar white flag. Just when the Clinebell family thought they couldn’t go on any longer, things took a turn for the better. For the past two years, Kevin Clinebell, a member of the third generation, has been Clinebell Equipment Company’s President. He had started with the company from a very young age, Accurate Box (Cont’d. from p. 1)

money on energy, which helps reduce your carbon footprint and your costs, as you will be able to fry your food quicker, and crispier, at a lower temperature.

Are tamper-resistant and tamperevident labels and seals the same? No, they are not – and this causes a lot of confusion. A tamper-resistant label is designed to deter tampering with a product. However, it does not necessarily provide visual evidence that a product has been tampered with. A tamper-evident label, on the other hand, as described by the FDA, does provide visible evidence that a product has been tampered with if the seal is broken in any way.

seals on food delivery products delivered from restaurants and other foodservice outlets. Recent news about delivery people helping themselves to the food they are in the process of delivering has helped fuel this, but the principal reason is that restaurants and foodservice outlets want to make sure the food they prepare for their customers is delivered intact and safe.

nutritionals and other customized information.

What is the key benefit of tamper-evident labels? Safety and peace of mind. Especially when it comes to food delivered to a home or office, consumers want to make sure their food tastes good, is delivered within a reasonable amount of time and is safe to eat. Above all, they want to know that the food has not been tampered with in any way from the time it left the foodservice kitchen to the time it arrives at their door.

Where can people expect to see more tamper-evident labels and seals in the future? Consumers are most likely to see more and more tamper-evident labels and

Is there anything written on these labels? Again, this can vary. However, with DayMark’s MenuPilot™ platform, tamper-evident labels can include information such as a company logo, a web address, safe handling instructions, date and time the food was prepared, marketing info,

Engineered to meet the most exacting standards, each coffee brewer is made to stand up to years of high-traffic use. The Café Deco line also includes a variety of coffee warmers that ensures coffee stays fresh and hot, from singleand double-burner units to a step-up, dou-

Together with the coffee brewers, these warmers provide a 360-degree solution to satisfying coffee-loving customers and stirring up more coffee sales. “As the Solutions Specialist for the foodservice industry, we’re proud to introduce our new Café Deco coffee brewers to the Brew category,” says Peter

ing the coattails of my dad and grandpa.” The bar industry was still asking for a smaller clear block, so Kevin daydreamed up the CI (Craft Ice) series of machines, which were designed to produce a manageable block of ice that could be easily set on a bar top and chipped off. “This became my path to making the family business mine,” he said. “Being a Clinebell isn’t just a name to me. It is the name on the building where I work, it is the name associated with the machines you all have grown to love and enjoy, it’s about

being an original and always looking for a way to forge ahead with your own ideas.” Clinebell Equipment is here to stay and will continue to provide you “The Diamond Standard in Clear Ice.” “We have always and will continue to be focused on providing our customers with exceptional service and support for decades to come,” Kevin said. “Give us a call.
