Technology in Reach Chattahoochee Technical College’s (CTC) Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) program in Georgia is wellknown for its competitive admissions process. It admits only 16 students annually and is one of only four OTA programs located in the state. But its competitiveness isn’t the only marker of the program’s success. The school’s mission to introduce students to state-of-the-art technology and simulate real-world environments for therapy has led them to seek innovative classroom solutions that aid instruction and keep the program competitive. Running with the idea that they needed a way to get students closer to the action, the school sought out a document camera, which would allow them to show documents, diagrams or anatomy models. While attending a tradeshow to explore the options, CTC’s AV specialist discovered HoverCam, one of the leading document camera manufacturers, and the company’s Pilot 3 digital podium. The Pilot

not only features a 13-megapixel 4K document camera, but also combines it with the most essential teaching tools: a Windows PC, large multi-touch screen, and wireless HDMI casting with bi-directional touch – all in a mobile podium. The Pilot 3 eliminates the outdated AV cart while integrating the most important AV elements needed in today’s digital classrooms. Teachers are liberated from stationary desks or lecterns and are free to move about the classroom. The podium has the unique ability to beam the computer’s image to any display in HD resolution, with no visible lag or delay, all without using a WiFi network. Furthermore, users with compatible interactive displays can control the Pilot from the display. Users can even connect a PC, Mac, iPad, tablet, mobile devices or other HDMI devices to annotate, record or take snapshots of the content from the podium. For CTC’s OTA Program, the Pilot 3 all-in-one solution had many benefits. It

How to Engage Students in Meaningful Online Learning For years, grade six teacher, Tory Garcia, would often opt for paper-based activities over using digital resources. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to use online tools for instruction, the login process was just too time-consuming. She couldn’t afford to waste valuable instruction time hunting down passwords and ensuring students knew where to find digital learning tools. “And that, unfortunately, took away from the students having those online, meaningful technology experiences in the classroom,” explains Garcia. These are experiences she knows students need to set them up for success in school and eventually in their careers. But then Garcia’s district, Bryan Independent School District in Texas,

adopted ClassLink’s Single Sign-On platform. Now she says accessing and logging into digital tools works “like a well-oiled machine. They sign on, they click on their app, and they are ready to work right away.”

Engaging Students in Learning The benefits extend well beyond just time-savings. “Engagement definitely has gone up because I’m introducing and incorporating technology into the classroom. And [with] students, anytime technology is used, their engagement level goes up.” Creating Confident Learners With uncomplicated access to digital resources, Garcia says students are more

TEKVOX Innovates for Leander Innovation Mission Leander ISD’s Vista Ridge High School has been using TEKVOX 4K MultiView Collaboration Student Pods for over a year in their flagship entrepreneurship facility, INCubator.edu. The ‘INC’ brings learning to life by including local entrepreneurs to teach business start-up skills to Vista Ridge students. These pods allow student ‘business teams’ to interactively share their laptop video on a single display in single, dual, triple or quad view modes. This fall, Vista Ridge commissioned a major design upgrade from TEKVOX that includes interactive instructor management of student pods as well as wholeroom web conferencing for engaging

remote instructors and other business teams. This upgrade included a flexible matrix interconnecting the student pods, a ShareView PC, a sophisticated multi-layer audio system as well as instructor technology and over a mile of new cabling. Following this pioneering effort, a second program will launch in the District’s Vandegrift High School in 2020. Vista Ridge INCubator.edu students started by forming teams and creating business model canvases. The 15 teams then presented their business models to mentor volunteers in a round-robin format, asking questions and seeking advice. Each team was matched with a

not only delivered the document camera they required but also aligned with its mission for creating advanced opportunities for learning. In cost comparisons, the Pilot was more affordable than purchasing each of these components individually. The built-in camera allows for instructors and students to quickly present a range of information, down to the smallest detail, to the entire class. “Students haven’t just adapted to this radical way of learning but they’re commanding it. They’re conducting impromptu presentations that were previously only given orally and now can be expanded visually, using the camera features and onscreen writing tools,” said Shaffer. “It’s added much more engagement that adds to our well-regarded program.” To see the HoverCam Pilot digital podium, visit booth #1133. confident in using apps for learning. Despite plenty of exposure to cell phones, her students still aren’t familiar with tools such as Google Suite and Gmail. But with easy access, students are better equipped to learn and use those resources.

Building Essential Skills Students are also using technology to access many different forms of information – a skill Garcia sees as essential for her students’ development. “As a teacher, that’s really important to me to start building those skills of gathering information from different sources online.” As Garcia explains, the apps available in ClassLink’s Launchpad are customizable and approved by the school and the teachers, which helps focus where students can get appropriate and reliable information.

Cognitive, Plume and Qualcomm Partner with Stanley Black & Decker Cognitive Systems Corp., Plume and Qualcomm Technologies announced their partnership with Stanley Black & Decker in the creation of its groundbreaking Omni security product. Omni’s unique capabilities are enabled by Cognitive Systems’ Aura WiFi Motion technology, Plume’s cognitive service curation platform, OpenSync device software stack and Qualcomm’s advanced Qualcomm Mesh Networking Platform. The result is a self-install security and motion detection system that alerts end users to motion in and around their homes and businesses without the privacy risks, set-up hassles or high costs that come with security cameras and sensors. The collaboration between the four organizations is an unprecedented step towards creating a truly cognitive, smart home or business. “We are very pleased to be working closely with these great companies and integrating our Aura WiFi Motion software with their solutions. With more than 35 patents granted, we are very well positioned to disrupt the smart home industry by providing motion detection for security applications and elder care, and most notably, the vital context needed to make a truly smart home,” said Taj Manku, coFounder and Chief Executive Officer at Cognitive Systems. “Our WiFi Motion software stack allows Stanley Black & Decker’s Omni to provide motion detection coverage across an entire home or business, without cameras, so that users know their locations and loved ones are

safe and secure.” Cognitive Systems’ Aura WiFi Motion technology uses unique radio frequency (RF) sensing technology that can “see” and interpret WiFi signals. On top of this RF sensing, Cognitive Systems uses predictive analytics for reliable and accurate detection and localization of motion. Cognitive’s solution integrates with OpenSync, an open source embedded software that allows partners like Cognitive to launch applications to a ready-made audience across millions of homes. OpenSync intelligently processes data collected by Omni in the Plume Cloud and enables new services to be deployed, managed and supported. “As the IoT landscape changes with more devices and use-cases, customers are increasingly looking for new service providers to enter the home and bring new solutions over-the-top,” said Tyson Marian, Chief Commercial Officer at Plume. “Omni is a great example of how we enable partners to provide new WiFi applications and monetize their services leveraging our existing service portfolio to deliver performance and insightful data at scale.” Omni by Stanley Black & Decker will be available for purchase in the summer of 2019. “Our goal is to provide our customers with a security product that provides true peace of mind,” said Spencer Maid, Vice President, Breakthrough Innovation at Stanley Black & Decker. “Cognitive Systems’

Security Concerns for Growing IoT Ecosystem By Bodil Josefsson, Head of IoT Security at Ericsson

As an IoT network grows in size and complexity, so grows the attack surface and its vulnerability to advanced and persistent threats (APT). The number of connected devices is forecasted to reach 20 billion by 2023 (www.ericsson.com/en/ mobility-report/reports/november-2017). This is a growing nightmare for both service providers trying to keep their networks secure, as well as for the enterprises collecting data from all the devices. Security must be a top priority for all stakeholders whose technology is a part of an IoT network. It must be taken into consideration from the start and cannot be an afterthought. This includes the service providers who need to maintain secure uptime to meet service level agreements as well as the device manuGAEMS (Cont’d. from p. 4)

own esports arena or premier Personal Gaming Environment. “We’ve redesigned Sentinel from the ground up to fit today’s gamer. Sentinel’s market is just as likely to be gamers competing in esports or creating online content related to games they play as they are to be casual gamers meeting up with

facturers who’d like to avoid having their products mentioned in the next round of botnet headlines. Responsibility also lies with all parties in between, such as the organizations managing and gathering data from all the connected devices. Here are the top four security concerns for our customers as they form endto-end, IoT security strategies.

How will I manage identity and access management? Humans are not the only entities subject to identity and access management (IAM) requirements. Devices and applications that access network resources need to have the legitimacy of their connection requests verified as well as to what databases they want to connect. Any device out in the wild – whether it’s a tablet or a sensor – in the wrong hands can be used to access an organiza-

friends to game together in the same room,” said John Smith, co-Founder of GAEMS. “Because of this, we packed the most performance possible into our TSA-friendly design. Players can now spend their time focusing on increasing their gamer scores and achievements instead of worrying about downtime.” Total immersion begins with a high quality, low-latency IPS panel and

Aura WiFi Motion technology, combined with Adaptive WiFi™ delivered through Plume’s cognitive service curation platform, allows true interoperability between IoT devices to ensure motion is monitored and interpreted effectively, enabling customers to not only protect their homes and businesses, but also keep their privacy intact.” “As evidenced by the rapid proliferation of connected devices in the home over the last few years, consumers are on the precipice of a new era in smart home technology,” said Gopi Sirineni, Vice President, Product Management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “We are excited to be working alongside Cognitive Systems, Plume and Stanley Black & Decker as they adopt emerging wireless technologies like RF sensing and mesh networking to deliver these innovative new applications to established industries like home and business security.” About Cognitive Systems Cognitive Systems Corp., is on a mission to transform the way WiFi networks are used. Its flagship technology, Aura WiFi Motion, uses wireless signals to detect motion in the home. Aura WiFi Motion harnesses machine learning and predictive analytics to reliably identify and localize motion for home monitoring, remote monitoring and energy management. This patented technology is layered onto existing WiFi networks, without adding any new hardware, to enhance security service provider and router manufacturer offerings. About Stanley Black & Decker Stanley Black & Decker is a $13 billion tion’s network. Should a breach occur, fail-safes need to be put in place to control and limit the damage an attacker can cause.

How do I ensure my data’s integrity? Data is the lifeblood of any organization. Collecting data and converting it into actionable intelligence is one of the key purposes of Internet of Things. The integrity of data is paramount, as is the need to ensure it is not manipulated while in-use, in-transit or at-rest. Also, personal data is particularly important to protect and should always be encrypted.

How can I stay ahead if no IoT network can be 100 percent secure? Unfortunately, all stakeholders in an IoT ecosystem, including consumers and endusers, have to accept the fact that no IoT network will ever be able to achieve 100 percent security. There are simply too many potential access points and other vulnerabilities. However, this does not relieve any party of the responsibility they have to

Plume’s cognitive service curation platform enables a rich set of modern digital services for the home which can run-on third-party hardware platforms and be deployed at massive scale. How can automation help me keep up? IoT networks and the volume of devices comprising them all require management. No human has the capacity to manually accomplish this, thus requiring automation and machine learning to assist that person. Providing IT teams with the tools they will need to manage a large and complex network and minimize its attack surface is critical. Any CISO knows, when it comes to an attack, it’s no longer a matter of “if,” but “when.” Being well-prepared for an attack will go a long way to speeding the recovery process and ensuring business continuity. While it may be impossible to completely secure an IoT environment, paying attention to these four areas is a good starting point to achieving end-toend security. The Benefits of Educational Technology By Liana Li, Vice President, QOMO

Technology has completely transformed everyday life, from the way we keep in touch with friends and family to the way we shop for clothes or order dinner. With each technological advancement, our world gets more efficient and more individualized to our specific needs and preferences. This is the world the children of today have been born into. It’s natural, then, that many kids are struggling to fit into the traditional learning model. The experience of being in a traditional classroom is at odds with the almost constant stimulation and fast pace of a technologically-advanced world. The typical school day, for some kids, is almost unbearably rigid. Incorporating even a few educational technology devices in the classroom can help acclimate today’s students to the learning environment. With classroom HoverCam (Cont’d. from p. 1)
