ClassLink a Game-Changer at NISD
Northwest Independent School District in North Texas is reaping all the benefits you would expect from a single sign-on service – faster logins and easier access to digital resources. But because NISD chose ClassLink as its district-wide SSO provider, it has also tamed a wild rostering process and gained detailed usage analytics that helps it make informed purchasing and professional development decisions. Jason Sanders, Director of Instructional Technology for NISD, explains the district, which is a 1:1 Chromebook environment, already had an SSO provider that worked fine. But ClassLink met so many more of their needs. “When we switched to ClassLink, it was different. Instead of being what worked, it was what educated,” explains Sanders.

SecuGen’s Low-Cost, Compact Bluetooth Fingerprint Reader By Jeff Brown, Vice President of Sales, SecuGen Corporation
What is Unity 20 Bluetooth? The Unity 20 Bluetooth is the world’s first elegantly designed, low cost, fully programmable Bluetooth fingerprint reader. It is sleek and small enough to be carried in your pocket as a mobile fingerprint reader or placed at a workstation as an ergonomic desktop reader. It’s a versatile scanner that can securely transfer fingerprint data wirelessly to mobile devices and computers alike. But it can also process and store encrypted fingerprints within the device without having fingerprint data ever leaving the device. This can help ensure that sensitive biometric data stays secure within the users’ possession at all times, which can be important for sensitive transactions.
What’s so appealing about it? Most Bluetooth products on the market are about as attractive as a deck of cards. The Unity 20 Bluetooth reader, on the other hand, is a stunning device with a simple but intuitive single button interface and three small LEDs. Our team has been able to achieve this while keeping the price of the product very low and suitable even for large-scale deployments. With support for Android and iOS, the Unity 20 Bluetooth can be paired with most smartphones or tablets as an efficient solution for roaming enrollment and authentication of groups of people without having to deal with bulky machines. No longer requiring cables that can lead to clunky tethering, the Unity 20 Bluetooth was designed so that an administrator can hold it in one hand while presenting it to a user to place their finger comfortably to scan.

BrightThinker: Educating Modern Learners BrightThinker is a nonprofit organization that is based out of Lewisville, Texas, that focuses on the development and implementation of both online and paperbased curriculum to support even the most challenging students in grades 3– 12. BrightThinker accelerates students’ learning with dynamic media-rich, mastery-based curriculum, that is a complete set of courses in core and elective courses that adhere to both state and national standards. Through the implementation of the BrightThinker curriculum, schools have been able to measure comparable success from those students who are in advanced placement courses as they have seen with students who are in credit recovery or use the curriculum in supplemental applications. Today, 24 out of the top 50 alterna-
tive accountability charter schools in the state of Texas, including independent school districts, have successfully implemented the BrightThinker’s core curriculum. This success has made BrightThinker a proven leader in promoting student success in academics. In 2015, the curriculum was developed to meet the rapidly changing needs of students and schools. The systems and pedagogy of BrightThinker’s highly successful precision mastery-based model informs teachers of student progress and creates a perfect environment for personalized learning. Both the paper and digital curriculum were created to support students of all academic levels and learning abilities. For marketers, this makes it easy to effectively target, engage and measure audiences. For media owners, this makes it easy to analyze and assess audiences, to optimize yield across screens holistically. “This new relationship with TiVo will allow our data to cover a huge number of households and devices, giving marketers and media owners the opportunity to leverage this crucial insight as they come under increased pressure to show value for marketing dollars,” says Randy Laughlin, Senior Vice President of Business Development at VideoAmp.
Smart Parents Stay Ahead of the Weather By Kari Strenfel, AcuRite Meteorologist
As a meteorologist and an active mom with two young kids, I need to stay informed of the outdoor weather conditions to maintain our active lifestyle. Whether we are biking to the park, headed out on a family hike, or keeping it simple by playing in the backyard, I need to stay updated on the outdoor conditions year-round. Living in the San Francisco Bay Area, we can get outside mostly every weekend. In the summer, I need to
keep an eye on those high temperatures: a family hike is fun at 8 a.m. when it’s still 60 degrees Fahrenheit outside, but not so fun when it reaches 80 degrees Fahrenheit by 10 a.m. Even in the winter when it rains, we like to know how much rain we got overnight to decide if it’s a good day for puddle jumping! I rely on the AcuRite Atlas™ weather station that I mounted on my roof to stay updated on the changing weather conditions. With the weather station reporting to the AcuRite Access™, which
ASHA’s Concern About Tech Use Shared by World Health Organization The American Speech-Language Association (ASHA) has long raised concern about the threat to hearing from listening to personal audio devices too loudly, too often and for too long. That concern was validated anew last February when the World Health Organization (WHO), in conjunction with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), introduced first ever global safe listening recommendations for manufacturers of personal audio devices.
Collectively, the recommendations are referred to as the WHO-ITU Global Standard for Safe Listening Devices and Systems. According to WHO, nearly 50 percent of people age 12–35 years old – or 1.1 billion young people – are at risk of hearing loss from prolonged and excessive exposure to loud sounds, including music heard through personal audio devices. Since 2006, ASHA has been a leader
positional. With BrightThinker’s curriculum and data, teachers will have the tools necessary to meet the needs of each student based on where they are in the learning process. BrightThinker is at the forefront of the new educational model of “Blended Education.” As students’ academic needs have changed over time, BrightThinker has provided a solution to accommodate the changes, and support teaching staff with results-driven content and data. In addition to removing the need for direct teacher to student instruction, the online classroom model better prepares students for academic success at the advanced level in the continuously growing online college environment. Teachers – both novice and experienced – are able to feel confident jumping right into using the systematic online platform that provides
teacher autonomy and promotes ease of use. In order to promote student success, BrightThinker provides students a rigorous academic experience, with the intent of preparing them for the successes that are measured by standardized assessments and collegiate preparedness. The development team has developed educational products that adhere to state and national standards in both architecture and curriculum content. Students will experience a variety of instructional content that is academically challenging yet visually engaging to stimulate the educational mind and encourage academic discovery.

“We are excited to be working with VideoAmp to pioneer the future of television and cross-screen video advertising,” said Walt Horstman, SVP/GM Data and Advertising, TiVo. “We believe our nationally-representative, highly-accurate viewership data enables unified planning, activation and measurement for all. Together, we hope to dramatically improve the advertising experience across screens.” “CIMM has long supported integration of Set-top Box data with Smart TV data to enable a more holistic view of the television audience universe and mitigate the limitations inherent in both data sets by combining the two,” says Jane Clarke, Chief Executive Officer and MD of The Coalition For Innovative Media
Measurement (CIMM). “We welcome the efforts by VideoAmp to advance such integration and help bring media buyers and sellers a step closer to the larger and more complete data samples needed for true cross-platform measurement.” VideoAmp’s sophisticated data modelling empowers ecosystem parties to bridge the silos between TV, OTT and digital video. The resulting unified VideoAmp household currency makes it easier to value, buy and sell cross-screen audiences.

warning the public about the risk, so much so that WHO invited ASHA to join a diverse group of outside experts to consult with them on its Make Listening Safe campaign, the effort that produced the new global safe listening recommendations. The recommendations ask manufacturers to equip devices like smartphones and other personal audio devices with information that explains safe listening and includes usage warnings, tracking information and options for limiting volume levels.
The recommendations would also have safe listening information appear in advertising and on external product packaging and manufacturers’ websites. These WHO recommendations represent a global attempt to mitigate the risk of unsafe popular tech use. Reduce Teacher Sick Days & Increase Test Scores at the Same Time Today’s classrooms are built for many things, but proper acoustics is not among them. While flat walls and linoleum floors are ideal for motivational posters and low construction costs, they are horrific for sound projection. Additionally, background noise in the classroom can feature a relentless onslaught of air conditioners, whirring computers, squeaking desks and sounds from the outdoors. This can have great consequences for student success. The Journal of Urban Health reported that 8- and 9-year-old students who experience higher ambient noise levels in the classroom perform significantly worse on standardized tests, after controlling for socioeconomic background. Other studies have shown similar results. These superfluous acoustics and
background noises also impact teachers as they battle to talk above the noise. Adults, who rely on context to intuit missed words, require a signal-to-noise ratio of around over 6 decibels, meaning a speaker’s voice has to be about 50 percent louder than ambient noise for comprehension. In contrast, children, who lack this ability to fill in the blank, need the sound to be 300 percent louder. Additionally, because sound disperses over distance, some studies suggest a teacher needs to speak at a level of 83 decibels to provide the proper signal-to-noise ratio for students in the back row. That’s about as loud as a garbage disposal. As you can imagine, this level of volume is unhealthy. According to one study in the Journal of Voice, teachers are 32 times more likely to be plagued with

another way to further conserve power. When in Eco mode, the monitor only wakes up when the camera detects sound, extending the monitor’s battery life. Each user can set their own sound sensitivity level. In addition, the monitor and camera connect by only using radio frequency signals every two seconds, ensuring lower radiation in the baby’s room. The color 4.3” LCD touchscreen monitor display provides clear, real-time video with at least six hours of battery life. The BabyView Eco PT also has a long-range radio frequency of 900 feet within line of sight, giving parents the freedom to do what they need to around the house without losing contact with their baby. It supports up to four cameras, and features multiple viewing modes: single, sequence and multi-camera view. The BabyView Eco PT is equipped
with a room temperature sensor, allowing parents to keep an eye on the temperature of the baby’s room through the monitor. In addition, the camera has a built-in microphone and high-quality speaker for two-way talk. The device comes pre-programmed with four lullabies and three types of white noise to soothe the baby and help them fall asleep. voice problems than any other voice-dependent occupation. Possible fixes include the installation of sound-dampening materials, such as carpets, or attempts to lower ambient noise, such as requests that grounds maintenance happen during weekends. But a more effective (and less expensive) solution is sound-enhancement which spreads a teacher’s voice evenly, meaning there is no difference in volume between the front and back of the room. Additionally, the sound is distributed mechanically so the instructor can speak at a conversational level. Not only is this more pleasant for students to hear, it also is much healthier for the teacher’s voice. The result? 2003 study shows the Stanford Achievement Test scores of students in amplified classrooms were 10 to 15 percent higher than students in unamplified classrooms. Studies have also linked sound amplification with improved student behavior, motivation
and general engagement in classroom activities. Sound enhancement is better for teachers too: In 1996, the Dubuque Community School District reported that teachers in classrooms with sound enhancement averaged just 19 sick days per year due to voice, jaw or throat problems, compared to 52 sick days per year in classrooms without sound enhancement. Imagine – if a school is paying less for substitute teachers, sound enhancement refunds itself. So yes, it is possible for test scores to go up and teacher sick days to go down. It’s one of the few examples where you can have your cake and eat it too. Visit www.buyqball.com to learn why Leslie Fisher, over 8,000 classrooms and 150,000 students trust the Qball for sound enhancement in the classroom.
Lesson plans, designed to meet all current state and national curriculum standards, are provided in a clear step-by-step format.
