HEADQUARTERS
CONCEPT
Charity: water is small nonprofit organization geared towards bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. The staff and CEO Scott Harrison work together to achieve this goal. Their culture is very collaborative, as there are no defined heads of departments and even the CEO himself is involved heavily within the organization.
1
The office design is based off the concept of the watering hole; bringing the staff together in a central location within the office to collaborate on new ideas to improve how technology today can change charity.

CRADLE TO CRADLE CONCEPT
HOUSING
Nature has variation, unpredictability, and constant change. Mimicking the ever changing adaptation of nature, the design of the house will incorporate a sequence of continious spaces, volumes, and forms optimized to change to suit the homeowner’s needs. The space turns into some other thing from what it was before, or just changing its character. As for spatial structure, recycling structure or material itself also result in creating long-life space.
SITE Location: Old Southwest-Day Avenue SW Roanoke, VA Day Street & 8th Street SW Square Footage 5911 sq. ft. Frontage 40’ Average Depth 146’
PROJECT STATEMENT Create a Cradle to Cradle home design that incorporates the local materials of the area, embracing the natural landscape of Roanoke. Provide changing transitions from the inside to the outside. The residence will also provide innovative design implementations of water management and conservation techniques that cater to the lifestyle of the homeowners.
CRADLE TO CRADLE HOUSING BENEFITS OF SOLAR SHADING • Can reduce direct glare whilst allowing high levels of diffused (indirect) natural light, giving a further potential energy saving by reducing artificial lighting needs.
• Properly designed external shading can reduce solar heat gain from glazing by up to 85% • Solar shading is an effective complementary strategy to air conditioning or mechanical ventilation, providing savings in running costs as well as general energy savings and reduced CO2 emissions. • Reduces building running costs and increases occupants’ comfort
GREY WATER FILTRATION • Greywater systems reuse and recycle wastewater from the home for use in the garden or even in the home for toilet flushing or washing clothes. The easiest way to use greywater is to pipe it directly outside and use it to water ornamental plants or fruit trees.

KENTLAND FARMS
FARM TO FORK
CONCEPT
‘Farm-to-fork’ is a current practice in the production of food that refers to the movement of growing food organically and directly providing it to the consumer. The site and history of Kentland Farms can be catered towards a farm to fork dining and cooking establishment. By establishing Kentland Farms into a farm to fork, the culture and local living of the area can be celebrated.
KENTLAND FARMS FARM TO FORK
The user experience would begin with farm tours highlighting the local and organic produce that so many cultures have lived off of for years. Following the farm tours, patrons would be lead towards the pavilion where they would be served a set menu meal that consists of seasonal and organic produce from the farm.

An existing building on Kentland Farms has been retrofitted for the use of the farm to fork. In the design of the Kentland farm to fork, the outdoor pavilion has been transformed using natural materials and lighting. The glazed glass exterior allows for the optimum use of natural lighting while absorbing heat as part of the passive solar system. Inside the building, green walls are utilized to circulate and produce fresh air. Emeco chairs are used for the dining area and the bar - the chairs are made from recycled aluminum. The pavilion has been designed for two spaces - an open dining room as well as a cooking demonstration area. The dining room can be easily rearranged to serve for multiple functions. As much of the existing structure has been left intact as possible.
