HEADQUARTERS
PROJECT ESTIMATED TO BE FINISHED IN FALL 2014 UNDER MICHAEL WINSTANLEY ARCHITECTS & PLANNERS.
CONCEPT
Fleet Reserve Association is a congressionally chartered, non-profit organization that represents the interests of the Sea service community before the U.S. Congress.
FRA’s headquarters in located in Alexandria, Virginia in a three story building in the Old Towne area. The building was last renovated in 1991, and will need to be upgraded to meet present day code standards. One of the major upgrades includes adding ADA restrooms to all three floors. The concept behind the renovation of the building is to create a modern design; tying in the past, present, and future representation of the organization.
FLEET RESERVE ASSOCIATIONHEADQUARTERS DESIGN RENOVATION TO EXISTING BUILDING The 1st floor renovation includes creating a transparency between spaces tying the reception, new location of museum and conference room. This will allow unity between these core functioning spaces and allow natural light to flow throughout the 1st floor. The new museum and conference mirror each other with similar finishes, lighting, and feature walls to create a new canvas over uneven window lines. A pantry will serve to compliment the new open spaces to host events. The gym will be relocated to the first floor to be open for the FRA’s staff and the new third floor tenant. An ADA restroom will also be added to the ground floor. The 2nd floor upgrades will be minor. The major design element to the second floor will be to open up the existing conference room. This will provide an open work area for new workstations for the staff and allow more natural light to flow through the space. The existing offices will remain in place but will be resized to a more appropriate square footage. The pantry will also receive a renovation of finishes and provide a seating area for staff lunches.
SPACES CHANGES TO EXISTING BUILDING Open floor plan design for new lobby, museum, & conference room on 1st floor as well as workstations. Office spaces, mail room, and 2nd floor pantry to be renovated. New spaces including ADA restroom & pantry on 1st floor to be implemented in plan.
TOTAL BUILDING Floor 1- 3,529 Sq. Ft. Floor 2- 5,477 Sq. Ft.
EXISTING 1ST & 2ND FLOOR PLANS
FLEET RESERVE ASSOCIATIONHEADQUARTERS MATERIALS & RENDERED FLOOR PLANS The finishes were selected to complement the existing finishes of the spaces not undergoing renovation. The range of blues, grays and wood tones all emphasize a nautical look to represent the organization.
FEATURE WALL Located in conference room, reception, and museum.
Translucent panels were selected to provide a uniform decorative look through the reception, museum, and conference room.

CONCEPT
Charity: water is small nonprofit organization geared towards bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. The staff and CEO Scott Harrison work together to achieve this goal. Their culture is very collaborative, as there are no defined heads of departments and even the CEO himself is involved heavily within the organization.
The office design is based off the concept of the watering hole; bringing the staff together in a central location within the office to collaborate on new ideas to improve how technology today can change charity.

GALLERY DESIGN The use of materials such as painted brick, concrete, metal, and plywood portray the qualities of an industrial city. This allows for Candy Chang’s installations and Banksy’s graffiti to be exhibited indoors, in a gallery without losing the organic quality that is street art.

KENTLAND FARMS
FARM TO FORK
CONCEPT
‘Farm-to-fork’ is a current practice in the production of food that refers to the movement of growing food organically and directly providing it to the consumer. The site and history of Kentland Farms can be catered towards a farm to fork dining and cooking establishment. By establishing Kentland Farms into a farm to fork, the culture and local living of the area can be celebrated.
KENTLAND FARMS FARM TO FORK
The user experience would begin with farm tours highlighting the local and organic produce that so many cultures have lived off of for years. Following the farm tours, patrons would be lead towards the pavilion where they would be served a set menu meal that consists of seasonal and organic produce from the farm.

ENTRY
An existing building on Kentland Farms has been retrofitted for the use of the farm to fork. In the design of the Kentland farm to fork, the outdoor pavilion has been transformed using natural materials and lighting. The glazed glass exterior allows for the optimum use of natural lighting while absorbing heat as part of the passive solar system. Inside the building, green walls are utilized to circulate and produce fresh air. Emeco chairs are used for the dining area and the bar - the chairs are made from recycled aluminum. The pavilion has been designed for two spaces - an open dining room as well as a cooking demonstration area. The dining room can be easily rearranged to serve for multiple functions. As much of the existing structure has been left intact as possible.
