Trash Pickup Written by Gabriella Cruz

On July 13, our president, Caia Hernandez, received a text from the Legacy Key Club presidents asking if anyone from Summit wanted to volunteer with them. They were hosting a trash pickup at Katherine Rose Memorial Park from 8 to 12 a.m that following Saturday. It was early, but there is no time for for volunteering and helping the community like the present. When I drove into the parking lot, I glanced around to see who I recognized in the group of volunteers. Almost everyone was from a different school, so when I met them under one of the trees beside a picnic table, I searched for at least someone from Summit. My friend Kim Huynh was there, so I instantly gravitated toward her. In fact, I spent the majority of my time with her. Starting off the day at 8, the weather wasn’t as bad. The heat has been absolutely sweltering this entire month, but starting the morning with the temperature in the 70s was actually ideal. It was the perfect mix between cool and warm. But as the day progressed, it started to reach the upper 90s. Kim and I had to brave the heat. Everyone was given a small, black trash bag and a plastic glove. In the beginning, it was quiet as we picked up items such as cans, plastic bottles, and empty chip bags. It was honestly surprising how much trash was littered around the area. As we were walking deeper into the park, Kim and I chatted with some of the other people there. We even made friends with an incoming freshman, Brooke, from Mansfield High School. Even though some were from other parts of the MISD district, almost all were from Legacy. Once it had reached 12, we all met back up at the spot we had originally met. There was a trash can right by so we threw our bags in there. Overall, I had lots of fun. I recommend doing this often at your local park!
