Having a “Ball” Volunteering Written by Tiffany Lam

In my youth, my parents thought it fit to try and make me play golf. Unathletic in all forms, I soon realized it wouldn’t work out very well. I shortly quit thereafter, vowing never to step foot on the course again. However, on June 21, I found myself being of use once more—just on the sidelines. My best friend Bryant, also the vice president, offered me a ride to the Annual Kiwanis Golf Tournament. We arrived at the Mansfield National Golf Club to be greeted by three other Summit officers: Kim, Sara, and Gabby. For the first half an hour, the different schools made obvious circles; there wasn’t much mingling. However, Gabby and Bryant took the leap of faith and started to intertwine the cliques. We ended up meeting the lieutenant governor, Abraham, and his friends! Once the interaction period was over, we were ushered outside to be given instructions. As we waited, Bryant and I talked to an incoming freshman, Brooke, and briefed her on all things Key Club. It was inspiring to see such fresh faces already take the initiative and contribute to the community. Just as we finished our conversation, a Kiwanis member introduced himself and told us we’d be separated into groups of three. Perfect! He explained each group would be assigned to a hole, and each member would take on roles specific to their course. Our hole ended up having a hole-in-one prize, so as Bryant kindly greeted the guests, Brooke and I were in charge of tracking their golf balls. We stood for hours in the sun meeting golfers from all walks of life. Even while volunteering, Brooke and I sparked entertaining conversations with each other and the guests; soon enough, time passed by like a breeze. At the end of the day, we all reflected while we ate our dinner provided by Kiwanis. I was able to meet an abundance of volunteers who passionately demonstrated their generosity, kindness, and love for Key Club.
