what is LEDCON?

LEDCON stands for Leadership Education District Conference. An annual Key Club conference held by the district board, LEDCON has a new theme each year; this year’s theme is Service

Under the Sun! The biggest parts of the conference include elections for staff positions, speakers, forums, contests, award presentations, and games! Essentially, we’re reflecting and celebrating the past Key Club year while gearing up for the next one. It’s an exciting and enriching experience. You have boundless opportunities to meet new people, even from a different state! You can even get some pins and patches to take back home. There’s endless opportunities for you to interact with others and make life-long memories at the conference!

This year’s Governor’s project highlights the importance of building supportive and encouraging communities across the district. By uplifting our peers and even the many strangers we see around us daily, we can see an increase in morale and mental health. We hope to encourage T-O to serve their communities and increase the positivity within their schools.

want extra hours?

If you need extra hours, a good way is to write articles! You don’t have travel anywhere; you can write it on the go or from the comfort of your own home. A regular article is worth 1 hour, and a HOTO article is worth 2.

Write a 300-400 word essay about anything Key Club related. If you’re out of ideas, visit the T-O website at tokeyclub.com to look at the prompts for this month. You can also find the rubric on there.

Articles go towards our Key Club’s points, so they are greatly appreciated! Yours even has the chance of being featured on this newsletter or the Tex-O-Key newsletter.

Happy writing!

Mission Arlington

Volunteering has no set date or timeline. Even when you’re on break, helping others doesn’t have an intervention as a school does. That’s why I decided to volunteer with my friend Alex at Mission Arlington during Thanksgiving Break.

We started by signing in, grabbing name tags, and placing our belongings in little cubbies. I followed Alex to a separate building, and we began sorting food donations along with two other girls. They introduced themselves as college students who attended a nearby church and needed volunteer hours for university. We made small talk as we organized canned and dry goods and offloaded trucks.

At one point in our food adventures, a truck stopped by with cases upon cases of Ozarka water bottles. We unloaded at least 30 packages of water into a waiting area and asked one of the ladies in charge for instructions. Advised to stack them against the wall, we formed an assembly line to transport the waters from the waiting dock to the wall; I got my workout in for the rest of the year.

About halfway through our volunteering session, our college friends left us as they had just completed their hours for the semester. As Alex and I bid them farewell, we realized it would be just us two for the rest of the evening. Two people unloading, sorting, organizing, and stocking donations was no easy feat.

Our main issue was stocking the canned goods. They had to be organized into black crates, and because there was limited storage in the warehouse, we were told to move the crates against the shelves so the John Deere gator could fit in the building during the night.

Both Alex and I got straight to work reorganizing the containers so they could be level enough to stack on top of each other. Then, we sifted through donations in the waiting bin. While that happened, we also had to help unload any new food donations and stock those as well. It was a large task for the two of us but we somehow managed, even staying a bit extra to finish the job. Poor Alex had to power lift the nearly 20 crates because I was instructed not to by one of the organizers. (I didn’t want to admit it, but I also didn’t have the strength to!)

By the end of the evening, we received immense praise from the head organizer, Regina. She was very sweet and complimented us on our way out. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I came in that day, but I’m glad I decided to stay. With Alex’s company, the three hours flew by in an instant. I’d love to go back and help very soon!
