Mozambique has attracted two of the world’s largest mining companies – Brazil’s VALE and the Anglo-Australian multinational Rio Tinto – to extract coal from the huge fields in Tete province. These two projects could do much to benefit the people of the area and drive socio-economic development in Mozambique. However, this paper details many of the problems associated with the massive new coal mines from lack of transparency to the deeply unjust resettlement programme - and concludes that the country's natural resources are once again being exploited for the benefit of local elites and foreign companies.
