New Year, New Student Influencers!

It sure has been a strange spring at KTH, wouldn’t you agree? now after the summer, we are happy that campus is full of life and students once again. We would like to give a warm welcome to our new students, and welcome back the oldies!

During the summer the Influence unit (Påverkansenheten) at THS has added three new members to their ranks, bringing the group to a total of five. The Influence unit consists of the President of THS, the Heads of Educational affairs as well as the Head of Student welfare. We work every day to improve the education and study environment, both physical and social, for the students of KTH. Seeing you back on campus reminds us of the important role we have in representing all students at KTH and how crucial it is that we students work together to improve our education and university. THS was founded almost 120 years ago, with the purpose of influencing KTH, and has done so ever since. Back then, students had to pay a fine for being late to lectures. Students were angry, and in response joined together and founded THS in 1902. With the help of the Swedish king, KTH dropped the fines three years later and we had our first great victory. So how does student influence work today? Hint, it involves fewer monarchs! Jokes aside, we work with student influence in educational issues on several different levels: from individual courses and programs, to KTH as a whole. A lot of work is done by the chapters, who you probably already are familiar with. The most important task we at THS have is supporting them so they can support you and your fellow students. Some issues affect everyone, and in these cases we in the Influence unit raise these issues to KTH and provide the student perspective.

However, student influence is in a period of thrilling change. The current vision for THS is to influence KTH in a wider variety of issues than before by including student welfare issues in our work. The situation during the spring has shown the importance of the student perspective on education as well as the study social environment, as Covid-19 has affected the students in both areas. We already started working on integrating these issues before the pandemic, and its impact has given us

confidence in our new direction. We are implementing changes that will give student welfare issues the same structure that has worked well for educational issues.

Everyday we and the chapters work together to make KTH better for the next generation of students. Our power ultimately derives from you, the students, and the engagement of many of your peers. We hope that for the upcoming semesters, we will work even closer with you and with more transparency. One way to achieve this is through Osqledaren since it allows us to communicate directly to you, the students of KTH.

We will be back in the next issue and until then, get involved in student life and we will see you around on campus.

Under sommaren klev 7 nya ansikten på sina poster i kårledningen. I den skaran finner vi Kårordförande, vice Kårordförande, näringslivschef, osqledarens Chefredaktör, Studiesocialt ansvarig, Chef för utbildningsinflytande och Mottagningssamordnare.

Kårledningen (KL) består av 12 studenter som pausar sina studier under ett år för att jobba för kåren och kårmedlemmarnas bästa.

Det är inte bara nya ansikten, kvar sitter Projektledare THS Armada, Chef för utbildningsinflytande, Evenemangchef samt Studiesocialt och Internationellt ansvarig. Dessa sitter fram tills årsskiftet.

Hösten tjugo-tjugo är nu här och mycket kommer att vara nytt för de flesta av oss. För en del av oss är det starten på arbetslivet, för en del är det ett nytt år på kandidaten eller sista året på ens master, men för många utav oss som aldrig hållit en Osqledaren i handen förut är det första terminen här på KTH. Vad innebär det egentligen att göra någonting nytt?

Jag sökte upp vad ordet “ny” egentligen betyder i Nationalencyklopedin, där står det “ny: som bringats att existera för helt kort tid sedan.”, vilket kan ses som en aningen otydlig beskrivning. Samtidigt som definitionen för “gammal” beskrivs med en tre (3) gånger så lång text. Att läsa citat ur Nationalencyklopedin kanske inte är det roligaste att göra, men jag har en tanke med detta, jag lovar! Känslan jag får inför något nytt är att det är lite otydligt och osäkert, vilket jag också tror är en anledning till varför beskrivningen av någonting nytt är så pass mycket kortare än om någonting gammalt. Vi vet helt enkelt inte vad som väntar framför oss, vilket är otroligt spännande.

med på denna resan vilken varje år startar med mottagningen. Detta fantastiska evenemang som involverar tusentals mottagare och faddrar, sker på nitton olika sätt, är utspritt på våra fem campusområden, samt ser till att närmare fyra tusen nyantagna ska kunna ta del av den gemenskap som kommer genomsyra de närmsta åren av våra liv; allas vårt studentliv.

Oavsett om du var med som ny eller gammal, så är jag personligen så otroligt stolt och imponerad över vad ni och vi som studenter tillsammans har åstadkommit under mottagningen trots alla de omständigheter som råder. Det är lycka som uppstår när vi studenter återigen ses efter den vår och sommar som varit. Det påminner mig ännu en gång varför jag blev förälskad i studentlivet för fem år sedan, när jag för första gången satte min fot på KTH och blev helt överrumplad av alla glada och färgsprakande människor som stod där ovanför Tekniska Högskolans tunnelbanestation i sina overaller och

fantastiskt roligt att se och få ta del av den vi är nya eller gamla, är alla tillsammans

Idag har jag gjort någonting helt nytt för mig, att skriva en ledare till Osqledaren, en läskig men väldigt rolig utmaning! Vilket märkligt nog även livet som student är, både gällande studierna men också studentlivet. Så för att knyta ihop säcken på denna ledaren tänkte jag väva in mitt favoritcitat från Blandaren, en humortidning grundad av studenter vid Teknologiska Institutet, föregångaren till KTH. Sålänge det nya på KTH och THS är det som är det nya för just dig, kommer det gamla nya att med tiden försvinna likt en “fjärt i rymden” (Blandaren, No1., 24 oktober 1863).
