4 | A n Evening To Remember

From the Dean Dear Colleagues:

Following our approach in the last two issues of The Ohio State University Dental Journal, the cover and lead story of this edition describe the progress we’ve made on our new facility -- the new Postle Hall. Our goal is to ensure that our more than 11,000 alumni stay up-to-date with this project so we can engage everyone who can help us meet our critical fund-raising goals. You’ll see photos and text that recount the highlights of our September 8th Building on Strong Foundations capital campaign launch. As you read that article and take in all the images, I believe you will agree that “this is our time,” and we must do all we can to show how our college can lead the way in shaping the future of dental education across the country and beyond. I am proud of so much in this magazine: the accomplishments of our students and faculty who are showcased; the demographics of our new dental hygiene and dental classes that confirm we are continuing to recruit the best of the best; the photos of our more than 40 new residents and graduate students, along with their program directors, that demonstrate the breadth of talent in each of our divisions; the description of teaching innovations by three of our faculty who are working to create an optimal learning environment for our students; and the awards and honors section that provides evidence of the impact we are having locally and nationally. We have also included stories and photos of our college events, as well as class reunions and receptions that give us all a chance to connect, reconnect, and “remember the good old days.” As you take it all in, you will learn about where our college is headed, and you will see that we are in a very special place right now -- a place our college has not been in for a very long time. After many decades, we are now a major priority at The Ohio State University and we have an obligation to take full advantage of all that this opportunity offers us. I am confident that with the support of our loyal and committed alumni, we will realize a future that will be admired and emulated by other dental schools far and wide. All the very best,

Patrick M. Lloyd, DDS, MS Professor and Dean College of Dentistry

An Evening to Remember On the evening of September 8, the College of Dentistry hosted a celebration that has been in the making for many years. Alumni and friends of the college joined the university’s senior leaders and state legislators in the courtyard at Postle Hall for the kickoff of the Building on Strong Foundations capital campaign to help support the college’s plans for a new facility.

4 the ohio state university dental journal

With a capital appropriation from the State of Ohio and a commitment of support from The Ohio State University, the campaign seeks to raise $25M toward the $95M project that will create a 132,000 square foot addition to Postle Hall, as well as the repurposing of more than 30,000 square feet in the existing structure. The new building will house student pre-clinical labs and clinics, an ambulatory surgery center, a faculty practice, a radiology clinic, and a central sterilization facility. A two-story atrium with an attached café will offer a place for students and the Postle Hall community to gather throughout the day. The repurposed space will provide upgraded student learning areas, high-tech classrooms, and easily accessible administrative offices.

In his welcome remarks, Dean Patrick Lloyd said, “This is our time! The support we are receiving for our new facility shows we are a priority for the university and the state. It also shows that others recognize our contribution as a statewide resource for oral health care, and that we are educating the dental professionals who will serve in Ohio, across the country, and around the world.” Bruce McPheron, PhD, executive vice president and provost of The Ohio State University, discussed the important impact the new building will have on

future generations of students and patients. “In keeping with President Drake’s vision and the university’s strategic plan, Building on Strong Foundations will enable, empower and inspire. These new facilities will enable the college to renew its commitment to teaching and learning, pioneering research, superior academic health care and operational excellence.” Kevin Smith, a partner at Robert A.M. Stern Architects of New York, offered his comments as the design architect for the project. “This building is being thoughtfully planned to match the existing architecture along historic Neil Avenue. With the new Postle Hall’s prominent position at 12th and Neil, the facility’s classic design in brick and limestone will make it an ‘announcing building’ in the health sciences district.” Following a video that included a virtual tour and renderings of the planned spaces for the new building, Dean Lloyd closed the event by thanking those who have given generously to the project. “Without the support of our loyal alumni and friends, this project would not be possible. The new Postle Hall will set a standard for other dental schools across the nation. It will incorporate the best of the best – the best facility for providing patient care; the best technologies available for educating students, and so much more. With this new facility, we will truly continue ‘building on our strong foundations’ of excellence, dedication, and success.” ■

Innovative Instructors Rethinking Course Content Delivery

The changing needs of students, desire for more interactive learning, and development of new technologies are prompting some instructors to rethink how course content is delivered. The Ohio State University College of Dentistry is keeping up with the latest trends in pedagogy, while continuing to advance the educational excellence for which the college is known. The following three educators are among those leading the way in innovation.

Rebecca Henderson, BS ’01, MS ’05 Assistant Professor - Clinical Division of Dental Hygiene In her 12 years of teaching in the Division of Dental Hygiene, Ms. Rebecca Henderson has never stopped learning. That’s because she teaches traditional, online, and hybrid courses that blend the inclassroom experience with online delivery—necessitating she keep pace with the latest technologies to create an engaging experience for students. “It’s one thing to take your traditional classroom teaching methods and figure out a way to put it online,” Ms. Henderson said. “But it’s a whole different thing to figure out how to best teach online. That has been a challenge.” Ms. Henderson said there are many factors to consider— from recording and delivering content in “chunks” so the file sizes are manageable, to confirming that students can actually access the technology, to ensuring communication logistics are effective so online students can hear questions and feel included during the asynchronous viewing of a live lecture capture. “It takes a lot of time and organization to teach well with innovative technology,” she said. She uses technology like Explain Everything™, an application that lets her annotate her presentations with voice recordings, drawings, and photos. “I can draw on the slide, telling students to look at the middle-third of the tooth where a cavity is beginning to form, just as If they were in class and I pointed to something.” Her latest find, EDpuzzle, lets her populate videos with questions that quiz students, providing instantaneous feedback that immerses students in active learning. The impact on students? Second-year dental hygiene student Trinette Panico, who has taken several courses with Ms. Henderson, is enthusiastic about the results. “The way she approaches online teaching encourages active participation. Even the short videos she posts that introduce the week’s topic help create a more personal connection with students,” Ms. Panico said.

8 the ohio state university dental journal

Ms. Henderson credits the university’s Office of Distance Education and eLearning and the College of Dentistry’s monthly teaching development program (iTeach), with exposing her to innovative ideas for enhancing instruction. “Ohio State is working very hard to facilitate this for faculty.”

Susan Travers, MS, PhD Professor Division of Biosciences

Dr. Susan Travers knew she had big shoes to fill when she inherited the course directorship of oral histology from Emeritus Professor Rudy Melfi almost 20 years ago. Kelly Kennedy, ’04 DDS, ’08 MS Not only had Dr. Melfi led the Associate Professor - Clinical lecture course for decades, Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery but he had always looked and Dental Anesthesiology for more effective ways to deliver the material—such as When Dr. Kelly Kennedy took the interactive CD of tissue over as director of the college’s sample images he created for internal medicine course students when it became too six years ago, she quickly cumbersome to spend time in recognized that her oral surgery the wet lab. training, while excellent, did not prepare her to help more than Dr. Melfi continues to be a 100 students learn to manage mentor and to give lectures to the second-year dental medically compromised students who take oral histology each year, along with patients in clinical emergencies. accomplished faculty like John Bartlett, PhD; Brian Foster, In addition to the inherent challenge of teaching a large class, Dr. Kennedy said the timing of the course—the end of the second year, just after students have been immersed in basic science—makes for a difficult transition. “They’ve been so didactic and lab focused those first two years, and my class is a complete 180 from how they have been thinking,” Dr. Kennedy said. While her approach to teaching continues to evolve with help from mentors at the college and ideas from the University Center for the Advancement of Teaching, she is pleased with adjustments she's made to the curriculum that promote more active learning. For example, Dr. Kennedy acts as the at-risk patient, presenting a clinical problem to students who work in small teams to figure out what questions they would ask the patient and how to respond. Students are able to apply and present their knowledge, and other groups are encouraged to chime in with their ideas. Students, including third-year dental student Gabriel A. Quiñones, have been pleased by the changes. "Dr. Kennedy does a great job creating a collaborative thinking environment. She keeps us on our toes and thinking critically about different scenarios with the cases she presents, ” Mr. Quiñones said.

PhD; and Zongyang Son, PhD who team teach with Dr. Travers. And while lectures still dominate and multiple choice tests are a must, Dr. Travers and the team have worked to increase interactivity. For example, they have integrated response technology to keep students engaged during lectures and to provide live feedback to instructors. In addition, for a number of years Dr. Travers assigned scientific articles related to dentistry for groups of five to seven students to discuss and be quizzed on in a collaborative effort. Beginning two years ago, similar exercises culminated in groups of students making presentations to their classmates. The presenters are able to choose from a series of case studies that require them to act like detectives to figure out solutions for patients or they have the freedom to choose their own research articles to present to the class. “We want students to become more empowered and to take charge of their own learning, so they know how to look things up and to evaluate new scientific findings and potential novel treatments,” Dr. Travers said. “That’s the goal.” ■

“These are really smart young professionals,” Dr. Kennedy said. “I learn something new each time I work with them.” college news 9

White Coat Ceremony Not even the “Great American Eclipse,” which took place the same day as the College of Dentistry's annual White Coat Ceremony, could eclipse the excitement of the new dental and dental hygiene students who gathered on August 21 to formally begin their paths to becoming dental professionals. Faculty, family, and friends gathered at Mershon Auditorium where Darryl Hamamoto, DDS, PhD, associate dean for Academic Affairs, presided over the ceremony. He was joined on the stage by Patrick Lloyd, DDS, MS, dean of the College of Dentistry, and special guests Beth Bielecki, BS, president, Ohio Dental Hygienists Association; Kevin Laing, DDS, president, Ohio Dental Association; and Larry Hutta, ’83 DDS, MS, then-president, Dental Alumni Society. Dean Lloyd offered insight on the significance of the evening. “Those who founded the White Coat Ceremony tradition intended that as you don the white coat, you feel a sense of transformation. It is your entry into the profession, and your public acceptance of the responsibility and commitment that goes along with that,” he said. “Tonight’s event is intended to be your introduction into what it means to be a professional. The obligations you’ll take on, the responsibilities you’ll have, and goals you’ll set for yourself will be amazingly different from anything you have ever experienced before.” ■

Reunion Weekend

2017

On Friday, October 6, College of Dentistry alumni descended on campus in droves to meet friends, attend Post College Assembly, visit Postle Hall, and cheer on the Buckeyes during Homecoming Weekend. The weekend began with College of Dentistry students winning first place for their Homecoming float for the third year in a row! Â At some point during the festivities, whether it was while singing the final words of "Carmen Ohio" or while catching up with a classmate for the first time in whoknows-how-many years, nearly everyone was reminded of why they love coming home to The Ohio State University College of Dentistry.

Guests gathered at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel to greet colleagues and to hear from Dean Patrick Lloyd about "what's new" at the College of Dentistry. “The reception is a special opportunity to bring our alumni and friends to network and have fun,” Dean Lloyd said. “Even when we’re clear across the country, people want to know what’s happening ‘back home’ at the College of Dentistry.” ■

Dear Friends, What a Homecoming we shared October 6 and 7! At the Post College Assembly lunch meeting on October 6, your Dental Alumni Society (DAS) was privileged to recognize the career achievements of Kent Palcanis, ’68 DDS, MSD. Dr. Palcanis has authored over 80 publications and has served as chair of Periodontology at the Medical College of Virginia and the associate dean of academic affairs at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. On Saturday, October 7, the DAS sponsored our annual pre-game tailgate. There were over 200 attendees. Our aforementioned 2017 Distinguished Alum, Kent Palcanis, was there. The ADA was strongly represented by President Joe Crowley, ’76 DDS, and 7th District Trustee Billie Sue Kyger, ’83 DDS. Also present was Ken Clemens, DDS ’54. Dr. Clemens is a previous Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. Furthermore, he is a founding member of The Dental Alumni Society and currently an active board member. Dean Patrick Lloyd addressed the group with great enthusiasm for the college’s building project.

D E N TA L A L U M N I SOCIETY President's Letter

The site of our tailgate will change in upcoming years. This is for a good cause: CONSTRUCTION! The courtyard between Postle Hall and Hamilton Hall will be occupied with the construction equipment that will be used to complete Phase I of the new facility. The DAS is committed to spreading the word and support of this phenomenal undertaking. The contributions of our alumni will move forward this tribute to our work in dentistry. We can take pride in the fact that the new building will represent the care and integrity our graduates have displayed to our patients and the public, solidifying the vital role we play for so many. Our Dental Alumni Society strives to make dentistry more satisfying for our alumni and students. With that in mind, I want to point out a service launched by Jim Cottle, ’81 DDS. The Dental Practice Opportunities Network is a resource for alumni and practices who have open positions or offices for sale, as well as for current students and alumni looking for positions. I have expressed my gratitude to Jim for this work. This project is a great tool to connect our community of Ohio State graduates and dentistry at large. We want members, and we want them to stay connected to our college. You can find DAS membership information on our website as well as information about how our society is “doing good” for students and alumni. You also have the option of calling Michelle Thomas, assistant director of college alumni affairs, at 614-292-1891. When you call, thank her for the endless work she does for the Dental Alumni Society and our Ohio State College of Dentistry. We invite you to join us at a DAS or college event. You will be reminded that you have a home at the College of Dentistry.

Ernest Svensson, ’59 DDS, MEd

The Ohio State University College of Dentistry

The Ohio State University College of Dentistry

Dr. Julian Woelfel spent more than four decades at the College of Dentistry as a student and faculty member. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he graduated from the college in 1948 and immediately joined the faculty as a “dental intern.” In 1954, he was granted a leave of absence to serve as a U.S. Army captain in charge of the dental laboratory at Fort Hood, Texas. In 1956, he returned to the college faculty and was promoted to associate professor in 1958 and full professor in 1963.

Dr. Ernest Svensson spent more than four decades at the College of Dentistry as a student and faculty member. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Education degree from Tufts University in 1948 and 1951, respectively. In 1959, he graduated from Ohio State’s College of Dentistry, after which he enrolled again at Tufts University, earning a prosthodontics certificate in 1969. Continuing his prosthodontics training, Dr. Svensson completed a prosthodontics residency program in 1971 at the Malcolm Grow U.S. Air Force Medical Center at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. That training was part of his 25-year commitment to service in the U.S. Air Force.

Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Woelfel served in other capacities that gave him exposure as an expert in dental anatomy, dental materials, and prosthodontics. During his leave of absence from 1957-58, he served as a research associate for the American Dental Association’s National Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C. In that role, he worked under the direction of Dr. George C. Paffenbarger, also an Ohio State graduate who was world renowned as an expert in dental materials. On another occasion, he was a visiting professor at Japan’s Nihon University College of Dentistry, where he lectured on clinical procedures and dental prostheses. In 1959, Dr. Woelfel began teaching dental anatomy courses, and his interest and expertise in the subject led him to write a foundational textbook, Woelfel’s Dental Anatomy, which is now in its 9th edition. As a leader in the field of dentistry and the specialty of prosthodontics, Dr. Woelfel also served as a member of the American Dental Association’s Council on Dental Materials and Devices from 1962-68. He continued teaching and providing guest lectures until his retirement from the college in 1988.

In 1975, Dr. Svensson returned to Columbus and joined the prosthodontics faculty at Ohio State’s College of Dentistry, where he served for 42 years in such roles as Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Removable Partial Prosthodontics; Director of Pre-clinical Laboratories; Director of the Advanced Prosthodontics Education Program; and Professor Emeritus. He also served as secretary of the annual Carl O. Boucher Prosthodontics Conference, and in 2010 its annual lecture series was named in his honor. After his passing on Monday, October 30, the obituary written by his family described Dr. Svensson as a “quintessential gentleman” who “always put other before himself,” and whose loss would be felt deeply by his family, friends, and former students.
