From the Dean What a year this has been! We started off with a win at the Sugar Bowl. After that we took home the trophy for the first-ever National Collegiate Football Championship. And then just two days later, we kicked off our year-long 125th Anniversary Celebration of Excellence. It all started with a panel discussion titled Then and Now that included a collection of dental hygiene and dental graduates from various decades who came to our college to talk about their time in Postle Hall – comparing things “then” with the way things are “now.” Since mid-January we’ve been touring Ohio and other parts of the country to celebrate with our alumni. The mix of attendees at these college-sponsored events has been unique. There have been graduates from the 1950’s to the present, and they have included dental hygienists, general practitioners, and specialists. This blend of alumni has created special moments as people compare their times and experiences in our College of Dentistry. They become truly elated as they make connections across the disciplines and across the years. As word has spread that this is our 125th anniversary, I have received letters and emails from people all across the land who have let me know how much our college has meant to them and their families. Each of these communications has been heartfelt, rich in detail, and moving. One in particular that I will always remember came from the daughter of a dental hygiene alumna and a dental alumnus. Her letter to me ended with this quote: “If a university can be considered a celebration of lives bettered by its programs and associations, then Ohio State’s College of Dentistry literally changed the lives of both my parents for the better.” Midway through the year, we held our anniversary gala dinner here on campus, and it drew alumni from far and wide. President Drake was there to share his support and enthusiasm for all our college has done and continues to do. Dr. Sheldon Retchin, the new CEO of Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center and Vice President for Health Sciences, was there to celebrate with us and to learn more about us. Our other honored guests included several previous deans of the college, and we had numerous alumni supporters whose generosity allows us to do the things that make our college one of the most outstanding dental schools in the country. Dozens of dental hygiene and dental students joined the celebration so that everyone could learn first-hand how talented, hard-working, and professional they are. The event was filled with presentations and videos that spoke about the great history of our college and the impact it has had on the dental profession around the world. It was an evening to remember! I expected our alumni to enjoy getting together, reminiscing with one another, and hearing about what’s new in the college. And I knew I’d enjoy these events, too, but I didn’t realize just how much fun I would have at every gathering, and how much I would learn 2 the ohio state university dental journal

from these occasions. It was tremendously exciting to see so many people who came together just to celebrate our college. They came to share experiences and talk about what makes them so proud to have graduated from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. They told me about past events that made a lifelong impression on them, and they answered my questions and filled in the gaps of my knowledge about the history of our college. We still have several celebratory receptions planned around Ohio and across the country before we finish off the year. I hope we have a chance to connect or reconnect with many of you. If you can’t join our next events in person, I encourage you to watch the anniversary video on our website and read our electronic newsletter, First Thursday, so you can learn how this exciting year plays out. As we head into the second half of 2015, there are more great stories to be told and more wonderful memories to be made! Go Bucks!

Dr. Thomas Paumier said his education at the College of Dentistry prepared him to not only run his own private practice, but to also make an impact in his community and the larger profession. “While in dental school, you don’t realize how superb the education is compared to what graduates from some other schools receive,” he said. “Ohio State prepared me both didactically and clinically to be able to provide superb care to a wide patient base.” Following graduation, Dr. Paumier returned to his hometown of Canton, Ohio, to establish a private practice. In addition, he collaborated with the Stark County Dental Society (SCDS) to establish a general practice residency at Mercy Medical Center in Canton as a means to educate and provide dental services to underserved individuals in the community. That facility also serves as a clinical opportunity for College of Dentistry students as part of the O.H.I.O. Project. In addition to the SCDS, Dr. Paumier has been active with the American Dental Association (ADA) and the Ohio Dental Association (ODA), over which he currently presides. “By far the most critical decision that has enabled my success as a dentist after leaving Ohio State was joining organized dentistry,” he said. “I quickly realized that while the dental school faculty and my student colleagues were my support system in school, it was organized dentistry that had my back after graduation.” 4 the ohio state university dental journal

Gilia Rethman’s advice to students – really, to all of us – is this: “Keep your mind open. Go out and do everything you possibly can, and make the most of it.” Her career is a testament to the philosophy she said came from her parents. “My dad always told me I could do and be anything I wanted to be. My mom was an Italian immigrant, and she felt so strongly about the opportunities here. Education was very important to both of them.” Rethman’s husband, Mike Rethman, ’74 DDS, served for 26 years as a military periodontist. As a result she practiced full-time in several states, getting her licensure wherever they were stationed. Now editor-in-chief of the monthly Dimensions of Dental Hygiene publication, Rethman has accepted another national leadership role in her profession. She will serve as president of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) for the coming year. “If you had told me that I would be speaking and writing and a national leader in my profession, I would’ve looked at you like you had two heads,” said Rethman. “You just never know where you may end up.” ■ Read more about Dr. Paumier and Ms. Rethman at go.osu.edu/where-are-they-now

“I Remember When...” In an event that officially kicked off a year-long celebration of the college’s 125th anniversary, a panel of seven alumni gathered at the College of Dentistry on January 15 to share their individual experiences as students. Following opening remarks from Patrick M. Lloyd, dean of the College of Dentistry, Class of 2016 DDS student Lydia Lancaster moderated a lively panel of alumni who shared their memories of their time at the College of Dentistry:

Rudy C. Melfi, ’57 DDS, ’59 MS, ’66 PhD “When we were learning how to use a hand piece, we had burs that were stainless steel. When you would cut on the teeth, the sparks would fly…there were no diamonds at that time. But I think we still turned out some pretty good dentists.” Bonnie Rudner, ’63 RDH “[Dental Hygiene students] could only be girls and you couldn’t be married. The director would stand us up every day and check us over to make sure our shoes and our dresses were perfect.” Marilyn Miller, ‘69 RDH “It was very important that we showed some professionalism by wearing a cap, having our pin on, our white uniform, and our white shoes to elevate us as a profession. The general public was not used to having women work on them.”

Jayne Klett, ‘82 RDH, EFDA, “We were just introduced to a Cavitron. We had files and hand instruments we used for heavy calculus. The base of knowledge is so different now. My class was part of the research that proved we could work with gloves on and it wouldn’t change the effectiveness. Half of our class wore gloves and the other half didn’t. We proved that, yes, we could work with gloves and the effectiveness would be very high.” Thomas M. Paumier, ’87 DDS “When I came in, there were a lot of military faculty. They were professional, yet a little bit intimidating. Today though, the collegiality is better. I had the privilege to give the white coat ceremony address as president of the ODA. I think that is a wonderful way to start your career. You’re welcomed in as a professional and a colleague immediately. We didn’t have that when I was here. I wish we had.” Jacinto Beard, ’90 DDS “It was the faculty and staff. They wanted you to learn. They wanted you to succeed. That’s what I remember.” Tara Haid, ’01 DDS “I grew up here and I didn’t think there was any other dental school. Ohio State being in the blood…this was pretty much the only school I wanted to apply to. When I arrived for my interview, we talked about anything and everything other than dentistry. Luckily, I got accepted!” ■

Postle Family

“To have a university and a dental school that does so much for the community – and our family is part of that? It’s a great honor,” said Herb Postle, ‘86 DDS, a fourthgeneration Ohio State graduate and third-generation College of Dentistry graduate. The Postle family has played an integral role in the college's 125-year history. Like the school that carries their name, the Postle family story is filled with learning, challenge, accomplishment, and service to community.

Harry Herbert Postle Harry Herbert Postle, MD, began the family affiliation with Ohio State’s health sciences before the medical college was actually a part of The Ohio State University. The school was founded as the Ohio Medical University in 1890 and included a department of dentistry. It later became the Starling Medical School, from which “Dr. Harry,” as he was known, graduated with his M.D. in 1898. “I can’t imagine what it was like back then,” laughed Jack Postle, ‘53 MD, ‘60 MS, Dr. Harry’s grandson and Herb’s uncle. “He really was a horse-and-buggy doctor, and did a little dental work too. That probably amounted to pulling teeth and not much else.” Dr. Harry lived and practiced in Toboso, Ohio, a small town east of Newark. He later saw patients at an office in Newark. Dr. Harry kept ledgers of all his patients, services, and charges. One of the ledgers was passed on to Jack, who donated it to a medical museum.

Wendell Dean Postle Dr. Harry’s only child, Wendell Dean, was born at home in Toboso and grew up in Newark. In fact, his childhood home was just across the street from that of his future wife, Helen Rossel. Wendell followed his father to Ohio State, and in 1923 became the first member of the Postle family to attend and graduate from the College of Dentistry. He loved his alma mater and remained an active part of the Ohio State community throughout his life. After serving the college as an instructor, Wendell was named dean of the College of Dentistry in 1939. At just 39, he was the school’s youngest dean, and served for 25 years. His naturally charismatic nature and love for Ohio State had a huge impact on the students whose paths crossed his. “Oh, every time I go to a reunion, I am approached by people who all start with, ‘If it wasn’t for your dad …’” said Jack. “He helped so many students get through school. He really was beloved.”

In addition to his duties as dean, Wendell—who was passionate about football—was appointed as Ohio State’s representative to the Big 10 athletic conference in 1947. He was among the group who hired Woody Hayes in 1951 and they went on to become life-long friends. During his tenure as dean, Wendell initiated the college’s enduring Post College Assembly, and conceived of the plan to include a program in dental hygiene for the college. Also, he collaborated with then-Ohio State Medical School Dean Charles A. Doan on the construction of the new hospital and dental school buildings in 1950. “He had to deal with the state legislature and other politicians,” Jack said. “It turned out to be one of his greatest successes.” Those buildings now carry the two men’s names: University Hospital was renamed Doan Hall in 1983 and the dentistry building was named Postle Hall in 1976. Wendell was an avid proponent of dental education, even to those who didn’t realize they wanted it. “Many of those people who tell me how influential Granddad was in their dental careers say something like, ‘I had no intention of becoming a dentist, until I met your granddad.’ He was good at picking out people who would be good at dentistry. Really, he was a recruiter for the dental school.” Many years after Wendell retired, Louis P. DiOrio, ’64 DDS, eloquently summarized Dean Postle’s place in College of Dentistry history when he wrote in the college’s history book, A Historical Remembrance of The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, “Initiating big changes at the college, [“Wendell’s] name was synonymous with dentistry at the university. He was like the infrastructure of the building we called home for at least four years of our dental education. He was, after all, the gray-haired father to all of us.”

Harry Herbert Postle II During his tenure at the College of Dentistry, Wendell and his wife, Helen, had three sons: Dean, Harry Herbert II, and Jack. Harry married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Bennett, another Ohio State alum, and taught and practiced dentistry throughout his life. “My father was very happy being a great dentist,” Harry’s son, Harry Herbert Postle III, said. “He never wanted the spotlight that Granddad had. He was happy that Granddad loved that, but he really focused on his work, and he was an excellent dentist.” 8 the ohio state university dental journal

Wendell and Harry practiced together for more than 30 years, at two different office locations near campus. The proximity to campus was a given. Both taught there, and Wendell continued his connection to the school after retirement. “I’m sure he freely offered suggestions to the new dean,” laughed Herb. In fact, while Herb himself was a student at the college, Wendell called and asked if he was interested in knowing what his course grades were. Herb declined.

Jack R. Postle Jack, Wendell’s son and Harry’s brother, also attended Ohio State. Rather than dentistry like his father, though, he chose a path more similar to his grandfather’s: medicine. “From when I was a little shaver, I always admired my grandfather, who was a medical doctor. So when people would ask, ‘What are you going to be, Jackie?’ I’d say ‘I’m going to be a doctor like my grandfather.’ “And I did, straight through: pre-med, medical college, internship, residency, all at Ohio State.” But then Jack’s story took a turn—north. “Much to the regret of my father, I chose to practice in Northern Michigan,” Jack laughed. “He called me ‘the one that got away.”

Wendell followed his father to Ohio State, and in 1923 became the first member of the Postle family to attend and graduate from the College of Dentistry.”

Jack practiced as an OB/GYN in Petoskey, Michigan, where he lived with his wife, Patricia Kemerer, and their three children. Before Pat passed away in 2011, she and Jack researched a comprehensive history of the Postle family, which Jack wrote and shared with the family. “We had a delightful time going from place to place together,” he said, “gathering information, taking pictures, and meeting people.”

together for many years before Harry’s retirement, and Herb continues in private practice today.

Harry Herbert Postle III

In time, he and Helen established the Wendell D. and Helen R. Postle Scholarship Fund to help even more students get a dental education. In turn, Harry and Margaret established the Harry H. and Margaret B. Postle Scholarship Fund.

As a child, Harry Herbert Postle III (Herb) enjoyed going to the office with his father (Harry) and grandfather (Wendell)—, especially on the Sundays when they saw a special patient: Woody Hayes. “That was the only day Woody took off, so that’s when he came in,” Herb said. Once, Woody brought a gift for young Herb: a game ball from the 1968 national championship, signed by all the players. “So I did what an eight-year-old boy does,” Herb laughed. “I took it outside and played football with it.”

Paying it Forward As Jack and Herb have heard time and time again, Wendell had an enduring effect on many students of the university and the college. He encouraged them, supported their ambitions, and even taught them.

“Granddad would do anything to make sure students got a great education,” Herb said. “And now all four of them are doing just that, for years to come.” Numerous students have benefited from the generosity of the Postle family, including their continuing financial support of these two scholarship funds. Truly, an enduring testament to a family’s commitment; a legacy of service, excellence, and caring. ■

Herb was just 16 when the dentistry building was renamed Wendell D. Postle Hall. “It was a great honor, and granddad was still living when that happened in 1976,” Herb said. “It was a huge moment for our entire family, a proud moment.” Herb was the first Postle to attend the college after the building was named Postle Hall. “I loved every single second of it,” he said. He taught at the school for several years, and joined Harry in the family practice. “It was a real gift to be able to practice with my dad,” he said. The two practiced

Bonded by Love: Legacy Dental Families For many alumni of the Ohio State College of Dentistry, “family practice” refers to more than clientele; it also describes their own family’s multigenerational dental business following graduation.

In celebration of its legacy families, the college held a reception before 2014’s white coat ceremonies for the parents, grandparents, and siblings of recipients who themselves are alumni. It’s the first of several regular gatherings the college has planned to bring legacy families together with their university. Susan Wilson ’83 DDS attended to see her daughter, Maurina Brooks, receive her white coat, making her the first female African American legacy. “I was proud of her and excited for her,” Wilson said. “Nothing like this has ever happened in our family before. It was kind of surreal.” After Maurina graduates, Wilson and her daughter plan to go into business together at Wilson's practice just east of downtown Columbus—the city’s first practice started by an African American woman. For Maurina, the practice became part of her daily routine at an early age, when her mother made the decision to homeschool her. Every day, after finishing their lessons, mother and daughter would head to the office, where Maurina found dentistry to be an acquired taste. “She came to work in my practice at age 10 and she didn’t like it—she didn’t like the blood,” Wilson said. “But at 15 she came to me and said, ‘Mommy, this is what I want to do.’” Maurina’s education included annual trips to the Jamaican Dental Convention.

The Hablitzel Family tailgating at an Ohio State football game.

“She went with me for 18 years and met all these other doctors who looked like her, which had a big impact on her too,” Wilson said. “We’d be at breakfast and she’d be there listening to all the adults and learning about life in a very special way.” “We complement each other,” Wilson continued. “I have friends who say, ‘I wish I had a relationship like you do.’ You just bond when your mom’s there all the time and you run around with her all the time. It’s special.” Wilson’s own mother also worked in the practice as the receptionist, extending the deep bond to include three generations.

Legacy families gathered this past fall before the White Coat ceremony.

10 the ohio state university dental journal

Though neither of Wilson’s parents went to college, they were both highly supportive of her education, which

began at Howard University in Washington, D.C. After one year, however, Wilson left D.C. for her hometown. “I thought I wanted to go away, but my family was all here,” she said. “I wanted to come home and be with family.” Choosing Ohio State was easy. “It was home.” When it came time for Maurina go to college, Wilson and her husband, Bill Brooks, didn’t push her to pick Ohio State but they're glad that’s where she chose. Besides it being close to home, it brought about a significant milestone not just for them but also the college. “I’m proud I was able to do this myself and then pass it down to my daughter,” she said. “I’m sure she’ll pass it to someone else.”

A Long Tradition For another Buckeye legacy family, the Hablitzels, the Buckeye dental tradition could reach the third generation, with a granddaughter of Darrell Hablitzel ’44 DDS currently a pre-dental student at Ohio State. In addition to the elder Hablitzel, now 96, Ohio State dental grads in the family include sons Mark ’71 DDS, Matthew ’73 DDS, and Michael ’78 DDS; daughter Martha ’74 dental hygiene; Mark’s wife, Tina ’71 dental hygiene; son-in-law, Todd Ferguson ’02 DDS; and Matthew’s wife, Shirley ’72 dental hygiene. While not a dental alumna, Darrell’s wife, Clara Lou, earned her master’s in business at Ohio State, too. Like Wilson, the Hablitzels made dental practice a family affair, with Mark and Michael joining their father’s practice in downtown Port Clinton, Ohio, after they graduated from dental school and served in the military as their father had. The four Hablitzel kids grew up with the practice in their backyard—literally, with the office on one corner of the block and the family’s home on another. “Because of the location we grew up as much there at the office as we did at the house,” said Mark. “It was our job every day or two to take any paper trash from the office and haul it down to the alley with our wagon,” he recalled. “My Aunt Marguerite was a receptionist, and we’d sneak around and sit on the floor and watch my dad work. There was a little closet with a little treasure chest full of toys for patients, and we would always check to see if there were any new toys.”

Darrell, whose older brother had been in the Marching Band. Darrell had also been a roommate and classmate to Les Horvath ’45 DDS the year Horvath won the Heisman Trophy. “One of my mom’s graduate classes was with Woody Hayes, and when she and dad would go to games during the Woody Hayes era, they’d have lunch on Sunday at the golf course, where Woody would take the team after their morning review of the game the day before. Woody would see my mom and dad and know my mom, and that was fun.” When it was time to think college, it was an easy choice for the Hablitzel children. “I don’t think we really thought there was any other school other than Ohio State,” Mark said. “We just had so much love for Columbus and the school. There really wasn’t any other place.” For families like the Wilsons and the Hablitzels, college gettogethers for legacy families are celebrations of a special bond—a way to stay connected to home. ■ To receive information on events for legacy families, contact Ted Backus, Senior Director of Development, at 614-292-307 or backus.30@osu.edu.

Dentistry Makes its Mark on Buckeye Athletics While many College of Dentistry alumni have made great contributions to dentistry, there have also been an impressive number of alumni who channeled their passions and strong work ethic into Dentistry and athletics. As Woody Hayes once said, “it’s what you do with what you’ve got.” The following is a small sampling of the many College of Dentistry alumni who turned “what they had” into successful athletic careers at Ohio State and beyond: BASKETBALL James R. “Jimmy” Hull, ’43 DDS lettered on the 1938 and 1939 Ohio State basketball teams. He was elected captain of the 1939 Big Ten championship team, which was the first Ohio State team to play in the NCAA post-season tournament. He was the second Ohio State basketball player to be chosen first-team All American. He was inducted into the Ohio State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1977.

James R. “Jimmy” Hull ’43

FOOTBALL As a senior dental student, Leslie A. “Les” Horvath, ’45 DDS was named an All-American at the end of the 1944 season. He has the distinction of being Ohio State’s firstever Heisman Trophy winner. He played professional football for the Los Angeles Rams and the Cleveland Browns from 1947 until 1950. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1966 and the Ohio State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1977.

Leslie A. “Les” Horvath ’45

BASEBALL As a predental student, Steve Arlin, ’70 DDS was a two-time All-American pitcher for the 1965 and 1966 Buckeyes. Both teams won the Big 10 title and the 1966 team went on to win the championship.

DENTISTRY’S ATHLETIC CONTRIBUTIONS OFF THE FIELD

William Heintz, ’32 DDS

Susan Mallery ’81

TRACK AND FIELD As a track and field competitor, Susan Mallery, ‘81 DDS, PhD took three top-ten finishes at the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) nationals and earned a second-place finish in the three-mile at the 1976 inaugural Women’s Big Ten Track and Field Championships. She was ranked among the Top 20 women in the world after winning the women’s division of the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington D.C., in 1976 and 1977. She is a member of the Ohio State Athletic Hall of Fame. OLYMPICS Brothers Peter “Pete” T. George ’56 DDS and James “Jim” D. George ’63 DDS each won Olympic medals. Pete was a middle weight Olympic weight lifter, who won a silver medal in 1948 in London, a gold medal in 1952 in Helsinki, and a silver medal in Melbourne in 1956. Younger brother Jim won the silver medal for light heavyweight weightlifting in 1960 in Rome. ■

Peter T. George ’56

James D. George ’63

The College of Dentistry’s contributions to Ohio State sports extends beyond playing. In 1958, faculty member William Heintz, ’32 DDS, who had previously served as an athlete and assistant coach for Ohio State’s cross country team, brought the concept of mouthguards to Coach Woody Hayes. Although mouthguards had been made at the University of North Carolina for many years, Heintz improved the laborintensive method they were using for making individualized mouthguards. Although it took some persuading, Coach Hayes ordered two mouth protectors made for each player and, that year, Heintz was appointed Mouthguard Consultant to the American Dental Association’s Bureau of Dental Health Education. It was Heintz who recommended that a team dentist should be added to the Ohio State Athletic Department. That role continues today with Division of General Practice and Materials Science faculty member Deborah Mendel, ’87 DDS, serving as the current team dentist. ■

Coshocton Dental Outreach In 1984, Professor Dennis McTigue, DDS, MS joined the College of Dentistry as chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, and almost immediately noticed something that would, in time, change many lives.

“One of the first observations I made was that every week, sometimes two times each week, a couple of ladies would come from the Head Start program in Coshocton. They came in a school bus with 10 to 15 preschoolers who needed treatment.” College of Dentistry students treated the children and, the next week, another school bus would come–with the same two women in charge. “One day, one of them took me aside, and she asked if we would ever consider building a clinic in Coshocton,” said Dr. McTigue. Dr. McTigue listed all the reasons that probably couldn’t happen: they’d have to have modern facilities, equipment, dental chairs, a staff. It would just be too expensive. But they wouldn’t give up. They invited Dr. McTigue to visit and meet with some community leaders, who asked what he thought it would cost to get a children’s clinic up and running. “I thought I’d never hear from them again,” he said. “Within 100 days, they’d raised all that money from three private foundations in Coshocton,” he laughed. “It was a great lesson to me to see how those women marshalled the forces.” Dr. McTigue knew that a clinic like this could provide his students valuable clinical experience treating the advanced tooth decay seen in the neediest patients. “This could be a win-win: the needy children could receive care, and our students' education would be enhanced. It would also give our students the opportunity to experience the professional satisfaction of helping an underserved population.”

14 the ohio state university dental journal

He took the idea to Dean Bill Wallace, “who thought I was crazy” to take it on, Dr. McTigue said; but with the dean’s blessing, he did just that. He negotiated with an equipment manufacturer for the best prices, then asked a local foundation to cover the cost. He began organizing the clinic from the ground up in space donated by the Coshocton Memorial Hospital. And recognizing the importance of community involvement, Dr. McTigue met with all of the dentists in town to build consensus and set eligibility criteria for the clinic’s patients versus their own. Many of those dentists—along with community leaders and representatives from Head Start and other social services agencies—joined the clinic’s Board of Directors. The clinic was designed to serve mostly children who were receiving Medicaid benefits. In actuality, the young patients who came for service were overwhelmingly not covered by Medicaid. “They were working poor,” said Dr. McTigue. “They weren’t eligible for Medicaid, but couldn’t afford dental services.” The program applied for and received support from several public entities, including the Ohio Department of Health, in order to continue to serve these children. Soon, Division of Pediatrics Professor Ann Griffen, DDS, MS came on board to operate the clinic. She’d been doing similar work in Maryland for low-income patients. “Setting up the clinic was a huge undertaking,” said Dr. McTigue. “She had to get all the infection control, protocols,

get the office people trained in dental scheduling and office management. It took a lot, and Dr. Griffen did it.” What impressed Dr. Griffen most about Coshocton, she said, was the strong sense of community. “I’ve never worked in a situation before or since where all of the social service people in town knew the clients so well—knew everything about them, and cared about them so much.” She cited the example of a young boy who’d always been a good patient of the clinic. “But on that day he was just not going to cooperate. He was fighting everything. It was unusual for him.” In conversation with the social services staff, Dr. Griffen learned of a difficult home situation the boy was facing. “We never would have known that normally. The project, initiated in 2003, provides students with 50 days of in-clinic experience, during which time they rotate to different sites, including the Coshocton clinic. Matthew Scurria is one of those students. A fourth-year student from Dublin, Ohio, Scurria plans to become a general dentist in the U.S. Air Force after graduation this year. He calls his rotation at the Coshocton clinic “eyeopening,” adding that “Some children were 7 to 10 years old before they ever had a check-up and consequently had very bad teeth.” While at the clinic, Scurria performed routine and emergency exams, prophylaxis and sealants, and operative procedures including restorations with amalgam, composite resins, and also stainless steel crowns, and routine extractions. Scurria’s experience mirrors those of many other dental students through the years. And while neither Dr. McTigue nor Dr. Griffen are involved with the clinic’s operations today, they have passed the baton into capable–and experienced –hands.

they had an entire community–a very caring community– looking out for them.” Every day, more and more children were seen in the clinic, some of whom had never received care before. “So many children had terrible dental problems,” said Dr. McTigue. “A lot of kids in pain.” In fact, over the years, thousands of children have been treated by College of Dentistry students. The clinic rotation is now part of the O.H.I.O. Project (Oral Health

One of their former students, Brian Dunlap ‘89 DDS, is the current director of the clinic. In addition, the two office staff who were hired 30 years ago are still with the clinic: Karen Mahon and Amy Guilliams. “Karen and Amy have been crucial to the success of the clinic,” said Dr. McTigue. “It wouldn’t have survived longterm without their deep dedication day-to-day. They’re just remarkable.” Today, more than 2,000 children a year are seen at the clinic, and dental students continue to receive valuable clinical experience in all types of pediatric dentistry. What started with a busload of preschool children, some very determined individuals, and a caring community has made a lasting impact on a generation of children—and future dentists. ■

For a recipient to be selected, he or she must demonstrate diligence, a commitment to excellence, and the most significant, measurable improvement in hand skills between the first and third years in the DDS program. Scholarship recipients must also demonstrate self-discipline, high ethical standards, and the desire to go “above and beyond” in their academic performance. “We hope the College of Dentistry community—including alumni, faculty, and friends—unite to fund this scholarship as quickly as possible, so we can begin recognizing Dr. Kerby’s genuine passion for students and the dental profession,” said Ted Backus, Senior Director of Development and Alumni Affairs. “Every gift is important in accomplishing our mission of fully funding this scholarship.” ■ To learn more about the Dr. Ronald Kerby Scholarship Fund or other gift opportunities and options, please contact Ted Backus, Senior Director of Development at 614-292-9307 or email Backus.30@osu. edu. DAS President’s Letter Dear Dental Alum; Let’s cut to the meat and potatoes. The OSU Dental Alumni Society would appreciate your support. We are integrally involved in many of the extracurricular activities involving the hygiene and dental students at the Ohio State College of Dentistry. We are striving to have a positive impact on the future generations of our profession, in addition to serving our fellow alumni and supporting our alma mater. Dean Lloyd is working hard to make the educational experience more student friendly. The DAS is engaged in making his vision a reality. I have been on the DAS board for eight years. As the active president of our group, I am proud of our range of programs. Let me fill you in on some of our commitments. Every year we hold a pizza luncheon in the student canteen. We supply the pizza in an informal setting and share our years of experience with the students. We help sponsor guest speakers, lunch and learns, the ASDA golf outing, the Mandiball student dinner and dance celebration, the White Coat Ceremony, and the Odontos yearbook. In fact, we contribute to just about all the extracurricular functions the students hold in some way or another, either by attending or financially supporting the endeavor. Our group is very diverse. We have a balanced group of alumni from both dentistry and hygiene, mirroring our profession in age, gender and culture. We have representatives on our board from every region of the state and members at large from far away states like California, South Carolina, and Florida. We meet three times a year as a body. The executive board meets three additional times annually to plan our agendas. The dean attends all these meetings. He shares with us all the latest news at the dental school. We share with him our concerns for a better dental school experience. We are excited to announce the activation of our new website, das.alumni.osu.edu. The site will give you updated information about all our activities. We are hoping that this will help create a stronger bond. Maybe it will entice you to be more engaged. Either way, it will make our group more visible to all College of Dentistry graduates. This fall we will be hosting a three-hour continuing education program on Saturday, October 24 in conjunction with the away football game against Rutgers. This will be held at Columbus Country Club. Following the course, we will host a luncheon while we watch the game and cheer the Buckeyes on to victory. Back-to-back national championships sure would be nice. Our first mailer will be out by the end of June, so please look for it. We are your voice at the dental school. If you have any concerns or interests, please reach out to us. If you are not already a member, please consider joining. If you are already a member, we thank you on behalf of all the alumni and student activities that you help support, as well as the future of our dental school. Together, we make a difference. If you’d like to get in touch with me to find out more about DAS membership, or to join in some of the upcoming events, please feel free to email me at mk31755@aol.com or call me at my office, at 216-382-2121.
