PG. 4 BUILDING ON STRONG F O U N D AT I O N S
From the Dean Dear Colleagues: I hope the color rendering of our new facility that’s shown on the cover is as impressive for you as it has been for others across our campus. The architectural firm that designed that image has captured the best aspects of the surrounding buildings to create a structure that will distinguish Postle Hall as the gateway to the health science district – located on the corner of 12th and Neil. The new Postle Hall will extend into the courtyard, creating a private green space for our college community. It will be a prominent structure on Neil Avenue and we will use it to its fullest. In the story on our new facility, you will read about the many aspects of our college that make it special at Ohio State and in the State of Ohio. You will also learn why we need this new building, and you’ll find out about the new educational and patient care facilities that will be provided by this long overdue initiative. And so that you, too, can be prepared to help our college capitalize on all that is planned for this project, find out how you can support our “Building on Strong Foundations” campaign. For those of you who have been following our four dental students from the Class of 2017 since their first day in our college, in this issue you will find out what they have planned and where they are going as new members of the profession. They have made our staff, our faculty, and their families proud! Along with their story is a memorable collection of Convocation Ceremony photos that highlight a celebration that more than 1,000 were on hand to enjoy. Later on in the magazine we also feature college alumni who are using their Ohio State education to support their passion for service. One of them will be the next leader of the American Dental Association. Another is entering her second year as a member of The Ohio State University Board of Trustees. Two other alumni are sharing their professional expertise and experience, improving basic living conditions, and providing much-needed care for their patients in remote corners of the world. There is no question that our graduates are making an impact around the globe. Our students’ achievements also fill the pages of this issue with stories about our successful Give Kids a Smile events; our record number of presenters at the American Association for Dental Research conference; and other honors received from the American Student Dental Association. These demonstrations of our students’ capacity to do great things is a foreshadowing of the strong leadership they will provide for our profession -- exactly what we need in these times of unprecedented challenges and opportunities. I hope you’ll also take a look at the new section of the magazine that showcases our faculty members’ research grants and awards. Their collective successes have moved our National Institutes of Health ranking among dental schools to a place we have not seen in years. In combination with the funds we receive from the State of Ohio and various foundations and corporate groups, our research funding totals more than $6 M – double the amount we secured just five years ago. Such achievements elevate our stature among other colleges on campus and throughout the country. Another noteworthy section includes several pages of news about our alumni from far and wide who have done so much to help our college. You will read inspiring quotes from our loyal supporters and the deserving students who benefit from the remarkable generosity of our alums. And there is news from the leaders of our Dental Alumni Society who give their time and talents by mentoring our students and encouraging others to get involved in programs that benefit the future generations of dental professionals. I am so grateful for all they have done and continue to do! Our college is in a very special phase right now, so stay connected for more great news! Be informed and get involved – and Go Bucks!

26 Reflecting on Two Remarkable Careers
For more than 125 years, The Ohio State University College

of Dentistry has embraced its public purpose of educating exceptionally capable and compassionate dental hygiene and dental professionals, providing care to patients, conducting research at the forefront of dentistry and oral health, and serving the community. As we plan for the college’s future, we take stock of our strengths of today:
° Nearly two-thirds of Ohio’s dentists are our alumni.
° At least one College of Dentistry graduate is practicing in every state in the country. ° Alumni are leaders in their communities and nationally in the profession; for example, Joseph Crowley, ’76 DDS, is president-elect of the American Dental Association.

° Admission is competitive, with 1 in 10 applicants gaining admission.
° The college’s clinics have treated Medicaid patients from 84 of Ohio’s 88 counties.
° Research funding has doubled during the past five years, to $6.4 million, with leading-edge inquiry in areas such as mineralized tissues, biomaterials, oral cancer prevention, and neuroscience.
° The college’s research ranking among all U.S. dental schools has risen to 15th from 35th.

Why Now: The Needs of Tomorrow
In the nearly seven decades since Postle Hall was built, the world has changed at a hastening pace. Our building was constructed in a vastly different era – before penicillin’s use was widespread, before gloves were standard for care-providers. Years of retrofitting and renovating have ensured that the College of Dentistry has been able to maintain a very high standard of education, research, and patient care. But, Postle Hall’s age and building configuration now limit our future growth and aspirations.
Our Vision for the Future: A Facility to Accelerate Excellence Our Building on Strong Foundations campaign is about our future. About realizing the college’s enormous potential – to expand our position as a national leader in dental education, research, and patient care. Nicole (Goettemoeller) Gettings, ’17 DDS Nicole Gettings started dental school with a passion for community service, and she hasn’t lost sight of that passion. In fact, community was an important part of her decision to launch her dental career with Premier Dental of Ohio, a practice where she’ll work in multiple locations. Dr. Gettings is particularly excited about working in Lancaster, Ohio, because her husband is a high school math teacher there.

Besides graduating, Dr. Gettings had one other goal she wanted to accomplish. She wanted to run the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Half Marathon — and she did, along with the Indy Half Marathon.
Although he’s relieved to be finished with dental school, Dr. Rhees said he will miss his friends and classmates. “It’s never been easy, but I’ve enjoyed it. I’ve been with such a great class, and we did it together.”
From the start of dental school, Dr. Gettings planned to become a general dentist. She said she’d consider going back to school for a specialty, but, right now, practicing as a general dentist and immediately making an impact in her community is exciting enough. She admits to

Hamza Dodo, ’17 DDS
Jordan Mayberry, ’17 DDS
Hamza Dodo has had his eye on the “prize”— his DDS degree — since he was 10 years old. It’s a dream finally realized as Dr. Dodo moves on to the next phase of his career: a general practice residency (GPR) at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. When he started dental school, Dr. Dodo was considering a residency, and now that he’s found a program, he feels good about his decision.
As a third-generation Ohio State dental school student, Jordan Mayberry had an idea of what to expect from the experience, and it lived up to his expectations. “I knew it was going to be a lot of work,” he said. “But it was great being with a solid core unit of classmates. We were all one big group, helping each other get to our end goal.”
“One of my favorite professors told me how beneficial a GPR was for him at the beginning of his career, and he suggested I start there,” Dr. Dodo said. Looking back on his dental school journey gives him perspective. “It’s difficult to keep in mind as you’re focusing on passing classes that you’re slowly gaining the tools to care for people’s health. The change is slow and subtle, but, as time goes on, I find myself gaining greater perspective on how to take care of my patients.”
He was delighted to find how much room for creativity there is in dentistry. “I was surprised to learn that there are multiple approaches in dentistry. Rather than a strict set of guidelines, it’s more like a set of researched-based and ethical principles, and there’s room to find your own style.”
SOME OF THE BEST PARTS OF MY EXPERIENCE WERE GETTING TO KNOW THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE UP THE POSTLE HALL COMMUNITY.”
With graduation behind him, Dr. Mayberry will begin a one-year general practice residency (GPR) with Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. He chose GPR to gain experience and professional perspectives, as well as to learn surgical procedures. He didn’t anticipate taking this route when he started, but his clinical experience at Ohio State inspired him to continue learning.

THE OHIO PROJECT C E L E B R AT E S 1 5 Y E A R S OHIO Project
of Connecting Students and Dentists with Patients in Need
Children, veterans, the uninsured, and those challenged by drug and alcohol issues are among the underserved populations who too often lack adequate health care. With these needs as a key focus, the College of Dentistry created the Oral Health Improvement through Outreach (OHIO) Project, with funding from a five year, $1.5 million grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). This year, the OHIO Project is celebrating 15 years of providing care to populations in need. “The OHIO Project has been an enormously beneficial program for the college and for the state,” said Patrick M. Lloyd, dean of the College of Dentistry. “It not only helps Ohioans in need, but also provides invaluable experience for our fourth-year dental students who, as part of their curriculum, spend 50 days providing care in community clinics throughout Ohio under the direct supervision of our partner dentists.” The partner dentists, who are often alumni of the college, serve as associated faculty members. Their participation enables students to care for patients and observe practice management in a diverse collection of oral health delivery
environments. As a result, students leave the program with more experience, a greater understanding of career choices, and an enhanced social awareness. Canise Bean, DMD, '95 MPH, professor-clinical in the Division of General Practice and Materials Science, has led the OHIO Project since its inception 15 years ago. “Many of our students, who write reflective essays on the time they spend serving the community, state the OHIO Project experience is life-changing,” Dr. Bean said. “Our students learn what it means when people have limited access to dental care because of circumstances beyond their control. Some go on to work with practices that offer free care or clinic days for people in need, and some decide to pursue careers in nonprofit community dental clinics.” Although the RWJF grant expired in 2007, the OHIO Project continues to change lives. “We couldn’t do it without our community partners,” Dr. Bean said. “The clinics, hospitals, and private practices work with our students and provide the instruction, auxiliary staff, supplies, and equipment. It truly is a team effort.” ■

That meant putting aside her dream of teaching. Or so she thought.

Molnar continued to work full-time while completing her master’s degree — an opportunity she sees as a real benefit of the online program. “Ohio State does a good job of connecting with students through online platforms,” she said. “They use a lot of technologies to make you feel like you know your faculty members.” Molnar’s primary job now is teaching clinical and didactic courses in the dental hygiene program at Rowan College at Burlington County in New Jersey and, additionally, she continues to work as a dental hygienist. Wanting to maintain ties to her alma mater, Molnar also teaches bachelor’s and master’s online dental hygiene classes for Ohio State.
“I think it was during my first year in the Dental Hygiene program at Ohio State when I heard about the new Master’s in Dental Hygiene (MDH) program at the college,” “I feel like the master’s program taught me modern, Molnar said. “When I learned the program would start the evidence-based teaching practices that I use every day as an educator. While Molnar ultimately plans to teach full-time, now she is enjoying both of her chosen careers. “The Dental Hygiene Master’s program bridged the gap between doing something I love — dental hygiene — and being able to do what I always wanted to do, which is to be a teacher. “What I like most about working as a clinician in a periodontal office is being able to use my skills to help people maintain, and sometimes even save, their teeth. What I like best about teaching is seeing students’ progress. I’ve had the privilege of teaching first-year pre-clinical courses, where we literally started the students with a mirror in the mouth, and progressed them to 12 instruments in one semester. I enjoyed seeing them grow in their confidence and their skills.” ■ 10 the ohio state university dental journal

A LASTING I M PA C T
As Ohio’s only state-supported public dental school, the College of Dentistry takes seriously its responsibility to educate the next generation of dental professionals who can then go into communities to help expand access to care. And, from rural towns and urban centers in Ohio to remote villages worldwide, College of Dentistry alumni are making a difference. This is a look at two alumni serving abroad. Although they are working in different capacities, these dental professionals were led to their adopted communities by the

same motivation: a desire to make a lasting impact for people in need. Tim Bartholomew, ’96 DDS Originally from Mansfield, Ohio, Tim Bartholomew, ’96 DDS, didn’t want to work in a factory as his parents did. His brother, Terry Bartholomew, DDS, graduated from the College of Dentistry in 1994, and he decided to follow in his brother’s footsteps. After hearing a lecture by faculty member Rick Scheetz, ’80 DDS, ’85 MS, Dr. Bartholomew decided to specialize in oral surgery. Following graduation from the College of Dentistry, he completed an oral surgery internship at Loyola University and residency at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. Subsequently, he did fellowships at the Oral Surgical Institute in Nashville, Tennessee, and at the University of Miami. Then, he prepared to go to Africa. “The American dream of affluence wasn’t stressed in my family,” Dr. Bartholomew said. “God was calling me to do something different. I completed a one-year fellowship at the Oral Surgical Institute in Nashville. During that year, I

met a general surgeon who worked in Gabon in Africa. He said they could use someone like me, but I’d have to raise my own funding. I had to get all my own surgical instruments, and I had to learn French. I thought, ‘Okay, I can do that.’” Dr. Bartholomew spent the next year collecting instruments from donors, raising financial support, and learning French. Afterward, he spent more than two years in Gabon and Niger, West Africa. “Originally, I went to Gabon and stayed there for four months and then moved to Niger for two years and helped train a dentist from Singapore who hadn’t completed a residency. It was during that time that I met my wife, Huyen, at a conference in Thailand. She was a missionary general practitioner on the other side of the world in Cambodia.” Sponsored by several churches and also by about 15 individuals, Dr. Bartholomew and his wife, whose training in anesthesia makes her an ideal surgical partner, have
lived and practiced in the West African countries of Cameroon and Mali. “I see a lot of kids with burns because they cook in open fires with scalding water,” Dr. Bartholomew said. “I also see diseases like Noma, which leads to missing parts of faces, lips, noses, eyes and scar tissue, as well as ankylosis of the jaw and tumors. The kids with burns and Noma get neglected because they need way more work and way more care. They are really suffering. We do any head and neck surgeries that come to us.” Now that they have a child, the couple plans to move to a sub-Saharan African country where there are better educational opportunities. Dr. Bartholomew also maintains his ties to home by coming back to Ohio in the summer to do locum tenens work and by working with the college's Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Radiology to have microscopic diagnoses for tissue biopsies done for many of his difficult cases. Dr. Bartholomew plans to continue his missionary work for another 10 years before coming home permanently to spend time with his aging parents. In the meantime, his work in Africa continues. “My patients are ideal patients in terms of gratefulness and patience. They know us as Christian missionary doctors who will do the absolute best we can for them and won’t ask for much money. They know I’ll do what I can to help.”
the number one reason kids weren’t attending school in West Java was because of dental problems, accounting for 61 percent of absenteeism, according to statistics collected by the government. “There are several reasons for the problems, but two top ones are the lack of the use of fluoride and overexposure to processed foods. A toothache so affects your ability to concentrate. Their parents, who have also experienced dental pain, have empathy for their kids and keep them home. “I knew of a colleague in the Philippines, Dr. Bella Monse, who was implementing a program to promote daily hand washing with soap, daily tooth brushing with fluoride toothpaste, and the use of deworming medication. I contacted her to discuss how this strategy could be implemented in Indonesia. “It sounds super simple, but we ran into many problems, and we came up with many innovations. One of the many innovations where water access was a problem was a portable hand-washing table. We worked with an Indonesian architect and the country director of Partner Aid International (a development and disaster relief charity) to develop a hand-washing table for those elementary schools that had no running water.”
Bruce Walker, ’91 DDS Like Dr. Bartholomew, Berea, Ohioborn Bruce Walker, ’91 DDS, thought that God was calling him to do humanitarian work oversees. After practicing in Delaware, Ohio, for 11 years, he and his wife, Sonya, who earned a medical degree at Ohio State, packed up their three small children and moved to West Java, Indonesia, where they had friends. “Originally, we thought we’d stay in Indonesia for three or four years, but it’s now been over 14 years,” Dr. Walker said. “When we arrived, I thought I would work in the dental school, but it turned out my time was better spent working with the Department of Education influencing what was causing dental problems. Children in West Java, Indonesia, proudly show their clean hands and teeth after washing them at a special table developed by Bruce Walker, '91 DDS, and other collaborators.
Dr. Walker said that providing a mass hand-washing facility or table and stocking it with soap, toothbrushes, and toothpaste cost $2.50 per child the first year. After that, with a facility in place, the cost per year is reduced to 50 cents. “The kids never take the toothbrush home. It stays at school with their name on it. Each year, the kids get a new toothbrush. The first year, we provide the toothbrush, toothpaste, and soap. After that, we ask the parents to buy the materials. “The beauty of this program is that it provides for the very poor children who often don’t have toothbrushes, toothpaste, and soap in their homes. The impact on their health is

significant, reducing absenteeism by as much as 25 percent. The in-school program helps level the playing field between the poor and more affluent in terms of their ability to attend school.” Dr. Walker plans to remain in Indonesia for at least three more years. His youngest child will graduate from high school at that time, and he and his wife will then decide what to do with the next chapter of their lives. Having maintained his licensure in Ohio, Dr. Walker likes the idea of coming home one day to practice or perhaps to teach at the College of Dentistry.
Currently, though, he is steadfast in his efforts to advocate for the children in his adopted province in Indonesia. “The government has seen this program as an inexpensive and effective way to address dental decay and improve the overall health of children in schools,” Dr. Walker said. “It’s been a privilege to work together with the people in the government who are responsible for the health of children on an everyday basis.” ■

CO N VO CAT I O N HONORING THE CLASSES OF 2017
On Friday, May 5, 2017, the College of Dentistry held its annual Convocation at The Ohio State University’s Mershon Auditorium. Presided over by Patrick M. Lloyd, dean of the College of Dentistry, the traditional ceremony honored the achievements of the Classes of 2017, which included 106 Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) graduates and 31 dental hygiene graduates. Special guests included Connie Clark, president, Ohio State Dental Board; Kevin Laing, DDS, president, Ohio Dental Association; Kimberly Moore, presidentelect, Ohio Dental Hygienists Association; and Phyllis Skelley, president, Ohio Dental Assistants Association. “Thank you for all you have done to make Postle Hall a better place,” Dean Lloyd said to the graduates. “In caring for patients, distinguishing yourselves in the classroom, providing community service, and conducting research, your classes will be remembered by the students who follow you. I’m personally grateful for the leadership you have demonstrated in helping sustain some old traditions and launch some new ones. You will allow us to continue to bridge the gap between the classes that graduated 50 years ago and the ones that will graduate 50 years from now.” Dental Alumni Society President Larry Hutta, ’83 DDS, MS, addressed the college’s newest alumni by welcoming them to the profession and encouraging them to “never lose sight of your motivation to enter the dental profession. I assure you, if you remember (that motivation) you’ll be successful beyond your wildest dreams.”

FAMILIES W I T H O U T D E N TA L INSURANCE Give Thanks for Give Kids a Smile
For most families with young children, a happy Saturday outing might include going to the movies, playing in the park, or visiting the zoo. But for Daniel and Amanda Shipman, it was an especially happy Saturday when they loaded their two children in the car, drove 40 minutes from their home north of Columbus, and visited … the dentist. Why? Because their young children were able to receive much-needed dental care — free of charge —at the College of Dentistry’s 10th Give Kids a Smile event in February. Amanda, who works for a family business, and Daniel, a carpenter, described Give Kids a Smile as “prayers answered” because they don’t have dental insurance and can’t afford treatment. “I’ve been really stressing about his teeth,” Amanda said of her youngest son, Finley, who is 3. “You can see his cavity. That’s what I look at when he smiles.” Brittani Crook, who recently moved to Columbus with her family to start a new job, was thrilled to learn about the event. She brought her 4-year-old son, Kylen. “Even though we have health care, the dental care itself — even just for cleanings — can still be expensive,” Crook said. “When I was able to get my son registered, I was very thankful.”
Top: Brittani Crook brought her son, Kylen, to Give Kids a Smile Day in February. Bottom: Amanda and Daniel Shipman, who are without dental insurance, brought two children to Give Kids a Smile Day.
Give Kids a Smile is also rewarding for the College of Dentistry students who plan the event. “My favorite part of the event is seeing how happy it makes the parents,” said third-year dental student Kyle Boyd, a member of the Give Kids a Smile leadership team. “I think a lot of us students will want to host Give Kids a Smile events at our own practices.” ■

The Ohio State chapter of the American Student Dental Association (OSU ASDA) was honored in February with several leadership and excellence awards during the ASDA Annual Session in Orlando, Florida. Third-year dental student James Zimmerman III, who led the chapter during the 2016-17 academic year, was honored with the “District 6 Delegate of the Year” award. The award recognizes a chapter member who “demonstrates personal dedication and outstanding achievement on behalf of ASDA and its local chapter.” The chapter received an award for “Outstanding Fundraising Efforts,” for its annual golf outing and vendor fair, as well as an award for “Most Creative Gold Crown Submission,” for its Candy Landinspired submission. In addition, third-year dental student Justine Bednarski was elected as ASDA’s District 6 Trustee for the 2017-18 academic year. Zimmerman credits the teamwork at both the executive board and general membership levels as key to the chapter’s success. He thinks the members’ biggest achievement this past year was advancing the chapter’s mission to advocate for the dental profession. “Others have protected our profession and the public for us, and now it’s our duty to do that for the future generations,” he said. Zimmerman, who has transitioned into his fourth year of dental school and the role of immediate past president of OSU ASDA, will join his family’s dental practice in Toledo, Ohio when he graduates next spring. He also plans to stay involved in organized dentistry. “I became involved in ASDA because my dad is very involved in organized dentistry,” said Zimmerman, whose father is College of Dentistry alumnus James Zimmerman, Jr., ’76 DDS, a past president of the Toledo Dental Society. “I look forward to becoming involved in the Ohio Dental Association. My goal is to be president of that organization one day. I think it’s important to participate in organized dentistry because we have strength in numbers and, together, can make effective change for dentistry and for the public.” ■
O H I O S TAT E ’ S S T U D E N T RESEARCH PROGRAM Wins Top Award Long committed to helping students realize the benefits of research, faculty at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry have for decades provided opportunities to students to participate in the college’s Student Research Program. This encouragement has increased students’ appreciation for taking a science-based approach to practice. Recently, this focus on research has led to accolades for the college, which received recognition in March for having the “Most Student Abstracts” accepted for presentation at the IADR/AADR/CADR General Session in San Francisco. Forty-two abstracts were accepted for the conference where Ohio State College of Dentistry students presented on a wide range of research topics. “This achievement really speaks to the efforts of our students and their faculty mentors,” said Scott Schricker, PhD, associate professor in the college’s Division of General Practice and Materials Science and director of Student Research. “I’m proud that our emphasis on research is clearly helping students gain a greater appreciation for dental science, which, in turn, gives them a new perspective on evidence-based practice.” Research conducted by third-year Ohio State College of Dentistry student Adam Swan garnered individual recognition at the conference. Swan earned first place in the AADR NSRG Dentsply Sirona Restorative Competition in the clinical category for his poster, “Effects of BMSC Transplantation on Mandibular Symphyseal Surface Growth.” Swan was mentored by Zongyang Sun, DDS, MSD, PhD, associate professor in the college’s Division of Orthodontics.
The president of the AADR National Student Research Group, Minerva Loi, presented the college with the award for the “Most Student Abstracts” during the IADR/AADR/ CADR Annual Meeting. Accepting the award were (from left) Patrick M. Lloyd, DDS, MS, Dean of the College of Dentistry; Scott Schricker, PhD, Director of Student Research; and John Bartlett, PhD, Associate Dean for Research.

Pleased that the students’ work was recognized, Patrick M. Lloyd, dean of the College of Dentistry, along with the college’s faculty, believe the experience has offered students an additional reward. “The opportunity for our students to interact with other students, scientists, and clinical researchers who student news 21

REFLECTING ON TWO REMARKABLE CAREERS With a combined 61-plus years of service at the College of Dentistry, pediatric dentists Paul Casamassimo, DDS, MS, and Dennis McTigue, DDS, MS, have become ingrained into the very fabric of the college. Close friends since they were residents together at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, their contributions to the dental students and residents they have educated and the patients they have served — and, by extension, to the patients their students have served — have been immeasurable. Following their recent retirements, Drs. Casamassimo and McTigue shared memories of their careers and their plans for the future: Q: How did you end up working at the College of Dentistry? PC: I came to Ohio State to work with my best friend, Denny McTigue. He needed someone to run the hospital department and residency in pediatric dentistry, and the chance to work together was a dream come true. (Dr. Casamassimo went on to succeed Dr. McTigue as Chair of the Division of Pediatric Dentistry in 1991). DM: I came here from the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in 1984, succeeding Dr. Don Bowers as Chair of the Division of Pediatric Dentistry.

Q: W hat are some significant changes you’ve seen at the college over the years? PC: The big change was getting us out of the college and into Ohio communities with good care and the message that oral health matters! Today, no dental school remains an island, and we were out there early and with force. Another change was the inclusion of special needs in our curriculum. Ohio State remains one of only a handful of dental schools offering hands-on care for persons with special needs. DM: The greatest change I’ve seen in the college in the almost 33 years I’ve been here has been the recruitment of a broad and diverse group of faculty from all over the United States and the world. This rich mix of talent has enhanced our didactic and clinical curricula at all levels of instruction. Another wonderful change has been the steady improvement in our clinical facilities with the exciting anticipation of a new clinic in the near future. Q: W hat are some of your best memories of working at Ohio State and the College of Dentistry? PC: It has to be the people. Even in a huge institution, “like” people tend to find one another and become friends. My fellow chairs, my faculty colleagues, the dental assisting and clerical staff are all favorites, and there are too many stories to tell. DM: My best memories are of the outstanding students, staff and faculty that I’ve been privileged to work with here at Ohio State. I’ve had the opportunity to teach some of the brightest and most dedicated students who are now providing excellent care to their patients all over the country. That is very gratifying. The staff that I worked with in a variety of positions in the college have been top notch and made my jobs much easier and more enjoyable. I also treasure the experiences that I had treating children in the Dental Faculty Practice. I had the opportunity to treat several generations of patients in many families, and the friendships that I made with them will endure. Top: Paul Casamassimo, DDS, MS, came to the College of Dentistry in 1988 to run the hospital department and Pediatric Dentistry Residency program before becoming the Chair of the Division of Pediatric Dentistry in 1991. Bottom: Dennis McTigue, DDS, MS, came to the College of Dentistry in 1984 to succeed Dr. Don Bowers as Chair of the Division of Pediatric Dentistry.
Q: What are you looking forward to in retirement? PC: I want to relax, move into different spheres of public policy related to children’s health, continue to do a little research and publishing with faculty and residents, spend more time at home with my wife and family — a lot to look forward to in retirement on personal and professional levels. DM: I am continuing to teach on a part-time basis and enjoy that very much. My wife and I are spending much more time with our grandchildren and are finally finding the time to visit places that have been on our “bucket list” for years. I look forward to spending more time doing my hobby of woodworking and tinkering with my ’53 Chevy pickup! ■

Certainly, receiving a scholarship helps give me some financial peace of mind that I can help defray some of the cost of education and limit the burden of student loan debt. But more importantly, it helps to validate my efforts and past successes in dental school, while concurrently motivating me to continue to strive for academic and clinical excellence every day. I am very grateful to those who have helped 'pay forward' and have enriched my experience at this wonderful university! James Zimmerman III, Dental Class of 2018 Scholarship Recipient

Dental Alumni, As your president, I have attended a number of gatherings representing the Dental Alumni Society (DAS). I am proud and honored to share our message with students and alumni groups. Our dental school education reputation nationally is one of a history of excellence. One factor that has held us back from receiving more national recognition for our dental school has been our present facility. I am happy to report, according to Dean Lloyd, our plans for our new facility are full speed ahead!! We expect to break ground in 2018 to build our new facility. This is truly an exciting time to be a part of upgrading the educational experience for our future alumni as well as elevating the dental health of the entire state. This new facility will lead our profession forward to obtain even greater accolades, which we all deserve. Certainly, as the dental educational experience rises, the significance of the diploma hanging on our wall rises proportionately. It is in all of our best interests to upgrade the notoriety of The Ohio State University College of Dentistry.
D E N TA L A L U M N I SOCIETY President's Letter
This fall, we will once again be hosting a continued education program in conjunction with an away football game. Following the course, we will host a luncheon while we watch the game and cheer on the Buckeyes to victory. Look for our first mailer early this summer. Please be sure to visit our web site das.alumni.osu.edu. The site will continuously provide you updated information on most of our activities. This site continues to make our group more visible to all College of Dentistry graduates. We are your voice at the dental school. If you have any concerns or interests, please reach out to us. If you are not already a member of the DAS, please consider joining our team. If you are already a member, we thank you on behalf of all the alumni and student activities that you help support. Together we make a difference.
