AMST 3950: THE TULSA RACE MASSACRE (D/H CREDIT) (Special Topics in American Studies)

Course description This course explores the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. We will examine the massacre, its roots, and its aftermath, as well as Greenwood’s renaissance, through: Field trips to local museums and historic sites (Greenwood Rising, John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park, and others) First-hand accounts Journalism Photographs and documentaries Public art Popular culture portrayals (e.g., Watchmen) The course asks how knowledge about the event was shaped over time and why it has been so misunderstood (and, for years, largely erased) in collective memory. It will also provide a deep understanding of today’s quests for Truth and Reconciliation. Half of the class meetings will be held via Zoom; the other half will meet in person.
