report to the community for 2016 Oswego Health

Oswego Health Charles “Chuck” Gijanto, President & CEO for Oswego Health The past year was a whirlwind of positive growth for the Oswego Health system, as we placed an emphasis on improving our internal culture and developing new programs to provide not only great healthcare services locally, but also financial viability.

Before I end my column, I would be remiss if I didn’t thank the community for its warm welcome when I arrived in September of 2015. I am also grateful for your willingness to be a part of our renewal, whether it was using our services or assisting us in some new way.

The improvements to our own culture, I believe, were instrumental to the great improvements Oswego Health made in 2016 in terms of quality care, patient satisfaction and how the health system is perceived in the community. This momentum will continue as the health system builds on this success.

Sincerely,

The staff has truly worked very hard to implement new services and I commend them for accomplishing great strides at Oswego Health. Their hard work was rewarded in the form of several prestigious awards and honors, including the grade of “A” from the Leapfrog Group, which measures quality. In case you missed it, we received the only A not only three times in a row, but was also the only hospital in Oswego and Onondaga counties to earn the top grade.

Mission of Oswego Health

the mission of Oswego Health is to provide accessible, quality care and improve the health of residents in our community.

Our major accomplishments include a collaboration that brought Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists (SOS) orthopedic surgeons to Oswego Hospital, where they are performing surgeries, including total joint replacements. Another 2016 milestone was our commitment to build the Center for Wound Healing at Oswego Health. Our final ‘Big 3’ as I referred to our initiatives, bariatric surgery, will likely begin to be offered in early 2018. We expect to announce a collaborating partner soon.

In its quest to provide outstanding local healthcare services, Oswego Health announced in 2016 that it would introduce several new cutting-edge services to the community. These services include the recently unveiled Center for Wound Healing at Oswego Health, which is expected to provide specialized care to 300 community members, who have hard-toheal wounds. To bring this superior care to the community, Oswego Health collaborated with Healogics, the nation’s largest provider of advanced wound care services. Healogics has a nationwide network of nearly 800 wound care centers across the country.

Conditions treated include, but are not limited to: 3 Diabetic wounds of the lower extremities 3 Pressure ulcers 3 Soft tissue radiation injuries 3 Necrotizing infections 3 Compromised skin grafts and flaps 3 Osteomyelitis 3 Lymphedema 3 Malignant wounds 3 Venous leg ulcers

While enclosed in a chamber at greater-thannormal atmospheric pressure, patients breathe pure oxygen, saturating their blood plasma

“Oswego Health is pleased to bring another progressive healthcare service close to where residents live. Many residents will benefit from this specialized care, as we treat their persistent wounds and improve their overall health status.”

This physician-led service includes specially trained nurses and other staff members, who have the latest technology available, including two hyperbaric chambers to successfully treat their patients with hard-to-heal wounds.

In the United States, chronic wounds affect 6.7 million people, a number that is expected to increase in the next two decades due to the aging population and increases in conditions such as diabetes and obesity. Successful Joint Venture Of Two Entities

WORKING TOGETHER

The collaboration between Oswego Health and Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists has not only been award-winning, but also declared an achievement by the community members who desire the best healthcare services close to their homes. Since the collaboration was announced last fall, more than 10 physicians and physician assistants from SOS, which holds a stellar reputation for orthopedic care, have provided care at an Oswego Health facility. SOS physicians are performing total joint replacements, as well as hand, shoulder

and knee procedures in Oswego Health’s Surgery Center. The SOS orthopedic surgeons and specially trained physician assistants, work alongside Oswego Health’s own orthopedic team, ensuring efficient and convenient care is provided to all patients. Oswego Health has designed an office suite specifically to meet the needs of orthopedic patients before and after any surgery. Complementing this is Oswego Health’s physical therapy staff, which is trained in the latest protocols.

“Orthopedics is a surgical specialty blessed by technical advances that have spawned quite an array of subspecialties that have improved care immensely,” said Oswego Health Orthopedic Surgeon John Ayres. “Oswego is fortunate to have local orthopedic care that can take advantage of this specialized care through its SOS collaboration. This collaboration continues to evolve and expand.” — John Ayres, MD,

Oswego Health Orthopedic Surgeon

At the time the collaboration was announced, SOS Chief Executive Officer Mike Humphrey said, “Healthcare is changing and I think the future is all about collaboration and looking at the best way to provide effective care.” He added, “Most importantly, I think this relationship will assist in coordinating care with an individual’s’ primary care physician, as well as with any physical therapy services that may be needed.” While the collaboration was announced in 2016, the first SOS-led surgeries were performed at the beginning of the year. The SOS physicians said they were impressed with the nursing care and the surgery center itself. Seth Greenky, MD, who performs joint replacement surgeries, praised the staff, saying they “make the place fabulous.” He credited the scrub technologist, nurse circulators, anesthesiologists and other staff for their dedication and hard work.

Dusharm, of Oswego. Dr. Greenky performed her total knee surgery, while Oswego Health’s physical therapy department provided her follow-up care. “They were all great,” Shirley said. “While I was in the hospital, all the nurses right to the environmental services staff, knew their jobs and made it an excellent experience.” Recognizing the importance of this collaboration, were organizers of the Excellence in Healthcare Awards. The collaboration between the two healthcare providers was presented with the Innovations in Healthcare Award by the Bankers Healthcare Group during a ceremony held last fall at The Lodge at Welch Allyn in Skaneateles.

Echoing this was Ryan Smart, MD, who performed his first two surgeries at Oswego Hospital in April, a shoulder and knee arthroscopy procedures.” The staff did a great job and certainly possessed the surgical skills necessary,” he said. “And the equipment is new.” Dr. Smart added, “Providing care here reminds me of the community hospital where I grew up and my dad was an orthopedic surgeon. It has a similar feel ‑-‑welcoming, with the staff committed to their jobs.” Among the patients who underwent care through the new collaboration was Shirley

A Community Working Together

WORKING FOR THE HEALTH OF OUR FUTURE

Oswego Health is an organization that gives back to its community, encouraging residents to improve their health through a variety of classes, support group and community events. “The Community Health Services staff is dedicated in its efforts to provide health and wellness programs that are informative and that the public truly find beneficial,” said Director Brenda LaMay. “Our nurse educators also attend countless events throughout the year to provide screenings and health information in an effort to improve the health status of our community.” The latest offerings include a two-year-old diabetes prevention program and Healthy Living classes, which are conveniently offered at various locations throughout Oswego County. The Healthy Living classes are offered for six weeks and offer evidence-based solutions for those living with chronic health conditions, such as COPD, diabetes or heart issues.

Community Service Plan While the Community Health Services staff is active within the community, the Oswego Health Community Services Plan outlines other initiatives the health system and its healthcare partners will spearhead to improve the health status of residents. Through this state-required CSP, Oswego Health, the Oswego County Health Department and other county healthcare leaders will work to develop initiatives that diminish some of the county’s biggest health challenges. These include obesity, smoking, especially those among

In addition, the most recent CSP calls for the healthcare leaders to continue their evidencebased programs as another avenue in which to improve the health status of those with chronic health conditions. The CSP is written every three years with direction from NYS Department of Health (DOH) and uses state data and other measures to select local health priorities. Each year, Oswego Health must submit to the DOH an update to the plan that reviews what goals have been met and what was found to be challenging.

services for the health system. During the past year, the Auxiliary donated as a group more than 10,000 hours to the health system by its volunteers. This group, which ranges in age from 14 to 91, donates its time completing tasks at Oswego Hospital and the Fulton Medical Center. These duties include overseeing patient transports, welcoming visitors at our front doors and assisting them. They also deliver mail to hospital departments and assist the business office staff with a variety of important tasks.

Members of the Hospital Auxiliary, along with our many volunteers are an integral part of our health system. The Auxiliary is an important fundraising arm for our organization through its popular fall bazaar, hospital gift shop sales and various fundraisers. “We want to support local healthcare services, making them available for ourselves, our families, and of course, the community at large,” said Auxiliary President Julia Burns.
