Oswego Hospital has certainly made the grade Oswego Hospital has been awarded an ‘A’ for providing safe, high quality care to its patients by the Leapfrog Group. With this distinction, Oswego Hospital joins hospitals across the country who are providing the highest quality of patient care. It’s the second time this year that the hospital has been awarded an ‘A’ and it’s the only hospital in a 50-mile radius that earned the top grade of ‘A’ from the Leapfrog Group.
The hospital also earned an ‘A’ last spring. “Our staff is committed to providing excellent, safe, high quality care to all our patients and this award is recognition of that care,” said Oswego Health Chief Medical Officer Renato Mandanas, MD. “We have put many programs in place to improve our patient care, which has resulted in our earning the prestigious ‘A’ from Leapfrog.” The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization of employers and other purchasers of health care is committed

Twin girls, Nora and Brynn, two years ago and son, Weston, this past May. “It was great for all three of our children,” said Jennifer, “The entire staff was amazing and helpful. I felt like I knew them forever.” Todd added, “The maternity center itself wasn’t like being in a hospital. It was very comfortable and if we needed something, the staff made sure we had it”. — Delmar Family, of Parish

OHHC has received a 5-star rating, the highest score awarded, for its patient satisfaction. To help avoid a hospital stay, OHHC can also provide disease management, infusion therapy and wound care. Sue, of Syracuse, who asked that her full name not be used, was told by her primary care physician that Dr. Elizabeth W. Bozeman was the best in the area for treating incontinence issues. To correct her bladder issue, Sue, 64, underwent surgery at Oswego Hospital’s state-of-the-art surgery center last summer. The surgery gave Sue her life back. “I can go out for the day and not worry about being incontinent,” she said. “I never could do that before. ” She’s now looking forward to a girls shopping trip in the New York City area. “Before my surgery I wouldn’t have considered such a trip.” Sue also had high praise for the hospital staff. “They were excellent,” she recalled. “The nurse, just the whole staff was great, attentive and kind.”
Butler joined OHHC in July and in her new position works to ensure that patients receive the care they need. Butler, a registered nurse, began her healthcare career as a home health aide and advanced to case manager and then to a manager of clinical practice, where she coordinated patient home care. She said she was inspired to pursue nursing as a career after observing the care two close family members received when they were severely ill. “I felt I could make a difference by becoming a nurse, providing care to those who needed it,” Butler said. “And I still have a passion for nursing.” Along with working at OHHC, Butler is an adjunct clinical instructor, providing instruction to future nurses. Butler earned both her bachelor and master degrees in nursing from Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester. A graduate of the Mexico Academy and Central Schools, Butler still resides in the area with her husband and two children.

Innovations in Healthcare: Oswego Health/SOS The collaboration between Oswego Health and Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists (SOS) was honored with the Innovations of the Year award at the awards banquet.
Oswego Health was among those recognized from throughout the Central New York area for having exceptional staff, services and innovations.
This collaboration brings additional orthopedic services to Oswego County residents, and is expected to impact thousands of patients. SOS and Oswego Health orthopedic surgeons will provide joint replacements, sports medicine, foot and ankle care, as well as hand, wrist and shoulder care. Just as vital is the orthopedic care in Oswego Hospital’s emergency room. This collaboration allows this department to provide 24-hour orthopedic care, another benefit to the Oswego County community.
Nurse of the Year Award: Amanda Neill
Volunteer of the Year: Maurice “Mo” Laws
Oswego Health salutes its award winning staff, programs and facilities, which were honored at the recent Excellence in Healthcare Awards dinner. Sponsoring the event, held at The Lodge at Welch Allyn in Skaneateles on Oct. 20th, was the Bankers Healthcare Group.
Throughout her 20-year career, Amanda has strived to ensure our patients received compassionate, high-quality care. She has spent her entire nursing career at Oswego Hospital, starting on the medical surgical floors and moving to the endoscopy unit, where she works today. Neill is a member of the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA) and was instrumental in involving the Oswego Hospital in the SGNA Champions Program, which increases staff knowledge and improves patient safety in endoscopy.
Facility of The Year: The Manor The Manor at Seneca Hill was honored as the Health Care Facility of the Year at the awards dinner. The award was based on the care provided at the 120-bed facility. The Manor was recognized for its recent 3-star rating overall, which included 4-star rating for quality in the most recent Centers for Medicare and Medicaid survey (CMS). The overall 3-star rating is based upon three individual star ratings, which include staffing, inspections and quality.
Oswego Hospital’s Maurice “Mo” Laws, was recognized with the Volunteer of the Year Award. Stationed at the hospital lobby’s main desk, Mo is ready each weekday with a quick smile, directions if needed and a wheelchair, if it’s required. Mo began volunteering at Oswego’s 164-bed hospital seven years ago. He is consistently recognized for having the highest number of volunteer hours, which this year totaled more than 1,600 hours. When asked what were the keys to being an effective volunteer? Mo told a local reporter, “You need to be dedicated.” He added, “When you say you’re going to be there, be there. Things like that. You just help everybody and anybody that you can all the time.”
The Manor accomplished this milestone by increasing the number of hours registered nurses are on duty, as well as implementing initiatives that reduced patient falls and pressure ulcers. It also improved the independence of patients in their activities of daily life.
At the awards dinner from left, first row: Esther Field, Wendy Howard, Chuck Gijanto and Amanda Neill. Second row: Jim Colone, of SOS, I Michael Vella, MD, of SOS, and Jane Nalle. Oswego Health Awarded Grant to Assist in Improving Community Health With the help of a grant from the Oswego County Community Foundation (OCCF), Oswego Health’s Community Health staff are educating community members of the impact that smoking, obesity and physical inactivity has on their health. The grant was awarded by the OCCF in its second year of grant making to local not-for-profits in Oswego County. A total of $27,000 was awarded to 11 not-for-profits in this second round. Oswego Health’s application was chosen for funding from the many received from across the county. “We believe this decision acknowledges the need for health education in the community and OCCF’s commitment to making that education a priority”, said Brenda LaMay, FNP, Director of Community Health Services for Oswego Health. LaMay shared that the grant monies will be used to purchase equipment, teaching aids and educational materials. In accordance with the Oswego Health Community Service Plan, Oswego Health provides free education and screenings to the public, including chronic disease management classes, senior health screenings, school based youth education as well as many health and wellness events and activities throughout the county. “We are grateful to the Oswego County Community Foundation for its commitment to the health of our communities and the support they provide”, said Karen Ferguson, Director of the Oswego Health Foundation.
Oswego Health’s Community Education Department was recently awarded a nearly $4,000 grant to purchase educational tools to assist them in informing the public of the impact of poor health habits, such as smoking, physical inactivity and poor nutrition. Showing off the teaching tools, from left, Oswego Health Community Health Services Director Brenda LaMay, FNP; Oswego Health Educator Sarah Wansink and Oswego Health Foundation Director Karen Ferguson.
Health and Wellness Tips for Winter 1. Go for a walk even when the weather is really cold – your body has to work overtime to get warm and you may burn up to 50 percent more calories than you would on the same walk in summer! But remember, go a little slower until you get warm and keep up the hydration. 2. Be aware of tendonitis and stress fractures if you don’t exercise in winter and expect to pick up where you left off after a whole winter with no exercise. 3. Instead of picking up a cup of hot chocolate to keep yourself warm, try a herbal beverage. 4. Gain an interest in indoor sports as opposed to cycling and jogging outdoors. Don’t forget that swimming at an indoor pool is an option for a great cardio workout!
8
5. The cold air and indoor heaters can dry out your skin. Make sure you drink at least eight glasses of water each day. 6. Caught a cold or flu? If the infection is above the neck (nose, throat) you could be OK to complete a low intensity workout. However, if you have symptoms that are worse than an average cold (chest congestion, muscle aches), exercise will only make you worse and delay your recovery. Rest is the best medicine. 7. Wear the right clothes when exercising in winter. Polypropylene is the perfect fabric to wear underneath a tracksuit, which will provide great insulation but minimizes moisture loss. Gore-Tex is a fabric widely used for providing protection from the rain and wind.
How To Avoid A Cold This Winter Hand-washing can keep you healthy Learn how and when to wash your hands Are you worried about catching a cold or the flu this season? Don’t throw your hands up. Put them together and scrub. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), regular hand-washing is one of the best ways to protect yourself from seasonal illness.
Washing without water Carry an alcohol-based hand sanitizer so you can clean your hands when soap and water aren’t available. Apply the recommended amount to one palm and rub your hands together until they’re dry.
When to wash Try to keep your hands clean as much as possible throughout the day. According to CDC, you’ll definitely want to wash them: • Before preparing or eating food. • After handling uncooked meat or fish. • After using the bathroom. • After coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose. • After changing diapers. • Before and after coming in contact with someone who’s sick. • Before and after treating a cut or wound. • After handling garbage or animal waste.
How sickness spreads
Keep ‘em clean
Cold and flu germs spread through the coughs and sneezes of infected people. This means that touching surfaces such as doorknobs, tabletops and desks could put you at risk. But taking just a few simple steps can help protect your health.
Make sure children wash their hands regularly too. According to CDC, colds are the main reason children miss school. But good, simple health habits such as washing hands can protect kids from getting sick.
If you’re sick, cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough. And whether you’re sick or not, wash your hands often.
Handwashing 101 Washing your hands probably seems simple enough. Our mothers have been after us to do it ever since we were small. But when it comes to keeping palms and fingers germ-free, CDC offers these tricks of the trade: Rub your hands together with soap under warm water for 20 seconds or so. This is long enough to sing or hum the “Happy Birthday” song twice. Be sure to wash everywhere: wrists, palms, backs of hands, fingers and under the fingernails.
Matthew Liepke, MD Dr. Matthew Liepke is an Oswego physician with Port City Family Medicine and President of the Oswego Health Medical staff. A Lieutenant Colonel in the New York Army National Guard, he has been named New York Army National Guard State Surgeon. In this role, Dr. Liepke will be responsible for overseeing medical issues and medical training for the members of the 10,300-Soldier New York Army National Guard.
Rinse the soap from your hands and dry them completely with a clean towel or paper towel. Pat your hands dry to avoid chapping and cracking.

Strong for life
Exercising when you have diabetes Regular activity can provide a host of health benefits for people with diabetes. But it’s important to get a doctor’s approval and to follow safety precautions when you exercise. Young or old, male or female, diabetes or not, exercising regularly is one of the best things anyone can do for their health. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), exercise can help control blood glucose (sugar) and improve your body’s response to insulin. It can also help you manage diabetesrelated health conditions, such as high blood pressure and heart disease. And there’s more: Exercise can relieve stress, help you sleep better and build the strength, flexibility and endurance you need to perform daily activities. Physical activity can provide great benefits for people with diabetes at any age. And the earlier you start, the longer you can enjoy the benefits. Almost any kind of exercise—from gardening to running marathons— is appropriate if you don’t have a health condition that rules it out. Talking to your doctor before you start an exercise program can help you identify any potential problems.
