Resident Family Picnic at the Manor The activity staff at The Manor, known for their flair for decorating for just about every occasion imaginable, outdid themselves at this year’s resident and family picnic. A western theme was this year’s choice, which was complemented with barbecue favorites, which included hot dogs, baked beans and watermelon. The entertainment, of course, was Elvis, portrayed by Tom Gilbo, who is typically a part of every Manor event. The residents and their families just love his renditions of the King’s favorite ballads that he croons. The picnic was held on a perfect August night, with two large outdoor tents filled to capacity. Welcoming the families to the picnic was Oswego Health Vice President and The Manor’s Chief Operating Officer Jason Santiago.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR COO
As usual, summer just flew by and I hope you found time to enjoy the warmer weather and perhaps some time off. My wife and I, along with our three young children, were able to do some traveling, which offered some nice family time together. Summer at The Manor is an especially busy time, with separate family picnics held for both our residents and the participants of our Adult Day Health Services program. The weather for both events was perfect, allowing them to be held outdoors. We greatly appreciated all the family members who attended. The Manor’s staff and I look forward to these family functions each year and I also know the staff has a lot of fun planning these events. I want to thank them for making both picnics fun and memorable. Elsewhere in the newsletter are photos taken at the picnics. As you all know, The Manor is part of the Oswego Health system. This summer brought a new President and CEO to our organization, with the arrival of Michael Harlovic in July. He has 31 years of healthcare experience and brings vast knowledge and experience to Oswego Health. He attended our Adult Day picnic, where he was able to meet both many of our families, as well as staff members. I am sure he will be attending our Manor events in the coming months and I hope you have the opportunity to meet him.

In recent months, the NYS Dept. of Health conducted its inspection of our Adult Day Health Services Program. This is a thorough review of all aspects of the program and I am happy to report that they found no violations. I’d like to commend the Adult Day staff for ensuring that their program participants are well taken care of in our safe environment. The Manor is excited about an upcoming change. We will soon be accepting credit card payments. The details will be shared in the monthly resident billing statements. In closing, I’d like to share how especially proud I am of several of our staff who are advancing in their careers here at The Manor, as ‘we grow our own.’ Just recently, four staff members became licensed practical nurses giving them the opportunity to provide a higher level of care to our residents. These four staff members originally worked in other departments such as housekeeping or as Certified Nurse Assistants and sought a way to further develop their careers here at The Manor. As a way of making sure we have staff who are providing the highest quality of care, we are encouraging other staff members to follow a similar path as we continue to ‘grow our own.’You can learn about these staff members who are featured on page 3. Sincerely,
Jason Santiago

ANNUAL ADULT DAY FAMILY AND FRIENDS COOKOUT The annual Family and Friends cook out was held by the Adult Day Health Services program on July 21st. We had a great turnout of family, friends and caregivers that were able to join us. With great weather, for the first time ever we held it outside. We experienced a successful NYS Department of Health survey, following an unannounced visit. This survey evaluates medical day programs and ascertains if services, care and all requirements are being met, according to Department of Health standards.
which was found to be deficiency free. All requirements were met and positive comments were received from the survey group. Each month, the Adult Day program conducts a community service project. It’s an opportunity for our group to give back to the community,
as they have a lot to offer. Some of our projects have included planting flowers and presenting them to Springside, baking cookies for the Minetto Volunteer Fire Department, and holding a bake sale with proceeds supporting the Fulton Public library.
Taking part in the survey are medical record reviews, interviews with participants and review of all mandated requirements. The program was deemed deficiency free and received positive comments regarding the interactions and overall program delivery. Adult Day also had our Veterans Administration survey again this year,

Important Items of Note •Residents and their families will soon be able to pay their Manor bills by credit card. Our Information Services & Telecommunications Department, along with our banking institution are working diligently to make this happen. •Patient safety is paramount at The Manor and to keep our residents safe, we can no longer allow power strips to be used in resident’s rooms. We also ask that you do not bring extension cords from home as they can pose a tripping hazard. •For those residents who wish to have a bird feeder outside their Manor window, we ask that you consult with the Engineering staff.
Jane Hollister and her daughter, Karen.

OSWEGO HEALTH FOUNDATION MINI GRANT FOR IPADS
Keeping in touch with family members and friends is important to The Manor’s residents and rehab patients. So when the Oswego Health Foundation announced its mini grant program this year, members of the Manor’s activities staff submitted a proposal asking for the latest technology. The staff thought that ipads would be perfect. “We are finding that more of our residents and rehab patients are very comfortable using technology and this was yet another way to keep them in touch with their loved ones,” said Heather Huggins, The Manor’s Activities Director. The application was among 16 received by the Foundation this year. The minigrant program encourages Oswego Health employees to develop innovative projects focused on promoting awareness of the health system or customer service. Each year a portion of the employee giving campaign, We Are the First Step, is used to support the selected mini-grant projects. “The mini-grant committee found the application for ipads to enhance the resident/patient experience and it was also something very innovative,” said Karen Ferguson, Foundation Director.

Quality Care - 4 Stars at the Manor The quality of care at The Manor at Seneca Hill remains one of the best in Oswego County. The Manor has earned a four-star quality rating for 16 consecutive months from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS). The most recent CMS survey was released in July and uses a range of one to five stars to rate skilled nursing homes across the country. While the facility earned a four-star for quality, its overall score was 3-stars, which is established through health inspections, staffing and the quality of care. The Manor has consistently earned a 3-star overall.
“The staff is to be commended for ensuring that not only are our residents safe, but that they are receiving the best of care,” said Jason Santiago Oswego Health Vice President and The Manor’s Chief Operating Officer. “The care they provide is heartwarming as they make sure each resident, as well as their family, feels special and receive the individualized attention they need.” While The Manor overall has been recognized for the care, the Adult Day Health Services program received high marks following a thorough review by the Veteran’s Administration. This program provides care to approximately 25

individuals each weekday and offers a comprehensive array of services in a home like environment to those aged 18 and older. This medical model integrates activities and socialization with the individual healthcare needs of its participants. “This program provides a safe and caring environment for families who are providing care to a loved one,” Santiago said.
