We are collaborating with Healogics, the nation’s largest provider of advanced wound care services. This physician-led service will feature two hyperbaric chambers that will help patients with the hardest-to-heal wounds. It’s pretty advanced stuff and we are excited to present it to the community. Details of this new services can be found on page four. This publication features Springside at Seneca Hill, our independent retirement community. Center for Wound Healing at Oswego Health Opening soon
Construction is well under way for the Center for Wound Healing at Oswego Health, which will bring yet another advanced healthcare service to the community. Oswego Health has partnered with Healogics, the nation’s largest provider of advanced wound care services, to bring wound healing care close to where community members reside. This physician-lead service will begin providing patient care this summer in Oswego Hospital. The Center will treat those with chronic non-healing wounds. Conditions treated include, but are not limited to: 3 Diabetic wounds of the lower extremities 3 Pressure ulcers 3 Soft tissue radiation injuries 3 Necrotizing infections 3 Compromised skin grafts and flaps 3 Burns 3 Osteomyelitis 3 Lymphedema 3 Malignant wounds 3 Venus leg ulcers
Hyperbaric Chamber provided by

The Center will also feature two hyperbaric chambers that will offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy. HBOT helps the body’s oxygen-dependent, wound-healing mechanisms function more efficiently. While enclosed in a chamber at greater-than-normal atmospheric pressure, patients breathe pure oxygen, saturating their blood plasma and allowing it to carry from 15 to 20 times the normal amount of healing oxygen to the body’s tissues. Ask your physician about visiting our Wound Care Center® if: 3 You have a wound that hasn’t healed in 30 days (commonly experienced by people with diabetes) 3 You have a sore with increasing pain, redness or swelling, foul odor, or a change in color 3 You have a surgical wound that has become infected Olivia Van Sanford is the Center’s director, who can be reached by calling 315-326-3780.
Physician Partners Seth Greenky, MD Oswego Health was pleased to welcome orthopedic surgeons from Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists (SOS) to the community last year as it renewed its orthopedic services. Among the SOS surgeons performing procedures in Oswego Hospital’s Surgery Center is Seth Greenky, MD, who is highlighted in this column. Dr. Greenky is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon who specializes in adult reconstruction, including total joint replacement and fracture care. He received his medical degree from SUNY Health Science Center and completed a Fellowship in adult reconstruction at the Cleveland Clinic.
Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists and Oswego Health Physical Therapy Shirley Dusharm, of Oswego, wanted to have her total joint replacement close to home, and was thrilled to learn Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists was providing surgical procedures, including total joint replacements at Oswego Hospital. Her primary care physician, Carlos Dator, Jr., MD, contacted SOS, resulting in Seth Greenky, MD, performing the surgery. The Oswego Health orthopedic team provided the follow-up care. Shirley also received her physical therapy from Oswego Health’s rehabilitation team.
“Everyone has been great,” Shirley said. “From the nurses right to the environmental services staff, they all know their jobs and it’s been excellent.”
While Oswego Hospital has a modern surgery center with all the advanced technology, Dr. Greenky says it’s the staff that “makes the place fabulous.” He credits the scrub technologists, nurse circulators, anesthesiologists and the other staff for their dedication and hard work. While the collaboration between SOS and Oswego Health is just months old, Dr. Greenky predicts that in the first year, the volume of joint replacement procedures will steadily grow. Be sure to read the story at left about Shirley Dusharm’s successful joint replacement experience.

The Best Rehab Care — at the Manor For Betty Jean Prent, the best rehabilitative care is offered at The Manor at Seneca Hill. She should know, as she has relied on the facility for her physical therapy care on three different occasions. Betty initially learned about The Manor’s excellent care while her sister was a skilled nursing home patient. So when Betty herself needed to have her hip replaced, she insisted on being discharged from a Syracuse hospital to The Manor for her rehab care. Since then, she’s returned twice after unexpected falls caused breaks in her other hip.
Quite simply Betty says, “The Manor offers the best rehab care helping me to recover quickly and the staff is so attentive to my needs.” Pictured with Betty is Physical Therapist Ele Eckert.

80% by 2018 Initiative
— Improve colon cancer screening to 80% The 80% by 2018 initiative is led by the American Cancer Society, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable. These organizations are working toward the shared goal of 80 percent of adults aged 50 and older being regularly screened for colorectal cancer by 2018. While the national rate is 65 percent, Oswego County’s rate is 74.2 percent, according to the New York State Prevention Agenda Dashboard for the county. Oswego Health has signed the pledge to support the initiative 80% by 2018. Community members over the age of 50 can improve their health by undergoing a colon cancer screening, which includes colonoscopies, while also helping the health system achieve its 80 percent goal. The 80% by 2018 campaign is a National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable initiative in which more than 1,000 organizations, including Oswego Health, have committed to substantially reducing colorectal cancer as a major public health problem for those 50 and older. “Most colon cancers are found in patients who do not have any symptoms,” said Oswego Health Gastroenterologist Bishnu Sapkota. “By achieving the 80 percent of screening colonoscopies of the eligible population, we will identify more colon cancer or the polyps that can lead to cancer, therefore decreasing incidents of the disease and its risk of death.”
Health Facts on Colon Cancer Colorectal cancer is a major public health problem 3 Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. when men and women are combined and a cause of considerable suffering among more than 135,000 adults diagnosed with colorectal cancer each year. 3 When adults get screened for colorectal cancer, it can be detected early at a stage when treatment is most likely to be successful, and in some cases, it can be prevented through the detection and removal of precancerous polyps. 3 About 1 in 3 adults between 50 and 75 years old – about 23 million people – are not getting tested as recommended.
