At Oswego Hospital, the bariatric specialists are performing the two most common and effective weight loss surgeries. The laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, where up to 75 percent of the stomach is removed leaving a narrow, sleeve-shaped stomach. They are also performing the laparoscopic roux-en-y gastric bypass surgery, where during surgery a very small stomach pouch is created and approximately 7 feet of the small intestine is bypassed. Patients who undergo this procedure may lose up to 75 percent of their excess weight on average within 18 months of surgery.

Both surgeries are performed laparoscopically, or minimally invasively, and most patients are only hospitalized 1-2 days on average.

7 Hand/upper extremities 7 Foot/ankle 7 Sports medicine. The orthopedics department is supported by boardcertified orthopedic surgeons, highly trained physician assistants and a physical therapy team, which works with our patients so they can quickly return to their lifestyle.

Oswego Health’s physicians and nurses are providing exceptional and safe care, as cited by a recent Centers for Medicaid and Medicare report. According to the report, Oswego Hospital ranked third best among 25 Central New York hospitals for its treatment of sepsis infections. The report calculated the percentage of patients at each hospital that received the proper treatment for severe sepsis and septic shock. Oswego Hospital’s rate was 62 percent, or more than ten percent better than the national average and 15 percent above the state average. Oswego Health also ranked between 26 and 30 percent better than all three of the Syracuse hospitals. “Oswego Health’s physicians and nurses diligently monitor their patients for the symptoms of sepsis,” said Oswego Health Chief Medical Officer Renato Mandanas, MD. “The early recognition of the condition and

Healthy You Event

Community Invited to Womens Services Program

Oswego Health is once again inviting community members for a night of health, wellness and fun with friends on Wednesday, October 3rd, as a panel of experts discuss the symptoms, screenings and treatments available for breast and ovarian cancers. This Healthy You event begins at 6 p.m. at GS Steamers Restaurant on East First Street in Oswego. Coordinating the night are Oswego Health, Peaceful Remedies, the Oswego County Health Department, Oswego County OB-GYN and Oswego County Opportunities (OCO) Cancer Services. Presenters include members of the Oswego Health Breast Care Team and Oswego Health’s physician partners from the Upstate Cancer Center. The Oswego Health breast care team includes Lisa Lai, MD, a Fellowship-trained breast care surgeon, surgeon Jai Singh, MD, and breast care navigator Lori Greeney, RN. Our panel includes Alex Banashkevich, of Upstate Cancer Center Radiation Oncology at Oswego; Sam Benjamin, MD, of Upstate Cancer Center Hematology

Oncology at Oswego and Raj Mahajan, MD, of Oswego County OB-GYN.

“This is an opportunity for women and men to become more educated about breast and ovarian diseases and the steps they can take to prevent these diseases,” said Dr. Lai. “The panel and I will also share the treatment options that are available locally.” Among the vendors who will be a part of the evening are the Oswego YMCA Livestrong program, St. Agatha Foundation, Peaceful Remedies, Oswego County OB-GYN, the Caring and Sharing Support Group and OCO’s Cancer Services Program. Oswego Health recommends that community members planning to attend the event call 315-349-5500.

Peace of Mind

The Latest in Medical Imaging Equipment Oswego Health has secured a $50,000 grant that provides women with the latest mammography technology offering peace of mind. A state grant provided by State Senator Patty Ritchie is allowing Oswego Health to purchase a digital breast tomosynthesis. This equipment is also known as three-dimensional (3-D) mammography and digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT). The equipment is an advanced form of mammography that uses a low-dose x-ray system and computer reconstructions to create three-dimensional images of the breasts. The 3D technology improves the accuracy of mammography and clarifies areas of overlapping tissue.

Using tomosynthesis, the breast is compressed as in a mammography exam, but with less pressure. The x-ray tube moves in a circular arc around the breast providing one millimeter slices that produce greater visibility to see tissue details.. The benefits include:

7

The 3D mammography exam provides better, earlier breast cancer detection compared to 2D alone

7

The equipment finds between 20 and 65% more invasive breast cancers that 2D alone

7 Reduces unnecessary callbacks by up to 40% “Breast tomosynthesis is an excellent technology that allows doctors to view the breasts in thin sections as though they are interpreting a CT as compared to a standard x-ray/mammogram,” said Oswego Health Chief Radiologist Matthew Westpfal, MD. “This allows for substantially increased resolution and detection of abnormalities when examining dense breasts.”

New Surgeons

Colon Rectal Associates

Oswego Health is excited to welcome four boardcertified colon and rectal surgeons from Colon Rectal Associates of Central New York. Providing care will be David Nesbitt, MD, Michael Moffa, MD, John Nicholson, MD, and J. Alan Ziegler, MD. This Syracuse-area physician group is wellknown for the exceptional care they provide to their patients. The fellowship-trained physicians will offer colon and rectal cancer screening and care of anorectal disorders in Oswego Hospital’s modern seven-suite surgery center. They will also offer office hours two days a week in suite 1300 of the Fulton Medical Office Building, 522 S. Fourth Street in Fulton. “Oswego Health has grown as a progressive, high-quality healthcare system with exceptional facilities and staff and this opportunity allows us to treat Oswego County residents,” said Dr. Nesbitt.

All four physicians have completed colon and rectal fellowship training: Dr. Nesbitt at Washington Hospital, in Washington, D.C.; Dr. Moffa, at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio; Dr. Nicholson, at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis; and Dr. Ziegler, at St. Vincent Health Center, Erie, PA. “We are pleased to have these highly knowledgeable and caring physicians bring their specialized expertise to our community,” said Oswego Health Chief Medical Officer Renato Mandanas. To make an appointment with the surgeons in their Fulton Medical Office Building office, please call 315-592-3939. Seated from left, Dr. Nesbitt and Dr. Moffa. Standing are Dr. Ziegler and Dr. Nicholson.

Healthy Highway Recognizing Oswego County’s high rate of obesity, Oswego Health, the Oswego County Legislature and Health Department, the administrations of Oswego County’s nine school districts and the Shineman Foundation, are collaborating to offer a Healthy Highway program in all 24 of the county’s elementary schools. With Oswego County’s obesity rate for adults at 33.8* percent and 38.7* percent for its elementary students, the leadership of these organizations has provided the support to implement this innovative program into the schools. The Healthy Highway program uses traffic themes and metaphors to promote healthy food choices and the importance of being active. Through the program, children learn that it is important to “fuel” their bodies with “green light” foods and to limit their “red light” food choices. In addition, the program also offers many activities to promote exercise. This is all incorporated into activities that reinforce healthy choices in a variety of ways to students throughout the nine school districts. Each school has its own designated program champion, who is supported by health educators from Oswego Health and the Oswego County Health Department. A fun Healthy Highway workbook will be sent home with each student, allowing families to embrace the program. Parents with questions or comments regarding the program, can contact Nurse Educator Lori Greeney, RN, at Oswego Health’s Community Health Department at 315-349-5513 or Diane Oldenburg, a Senior Public Health Educator, from the Oswego County Health Department, at 315-349-3547. *Source: HealtheCNY, a part of HealtheConnections 8/1/2018.
