our nature :

A preserved and easily accessible natural environment awaits you in a land of lakes and hills. You will find the diversity of places to visit enchanting: lakes, waterfalls, rivers, caves, viewpoints…Some sites like the Plateau of 7 lakes and Hérisson waterfalls are classified as a « great natural site ». In low moutains, the wealth of its ecosystems has led to proposing this land as one of the largest Natura 2000 sites in France.

Waterfalls The Hérisson waterfalls

Great natural site (B8) The Hérisson (805 m altitude) is installed in a valley surrounded by cliffs. The course of its waters (15 km) rushes down the backwater in a series of 31 falls before crossing Lakes Val and Chambly. The Hérisson thus descends 280 m over a distance of 3 km. This is the opportunity for a walk on the path along the river (7.5 km one way and return / 2 hours and fifty minutes to see all the

falls). There you can admire the multitude of waterfalls, basins and caves meeting your eyes. At every step of the journey, take the time to listen to the soothing sound of running water (at Saut of Moulin Jeunet, Saut of Forge, Saut of Château Garnier or Gour Bleu)... Or to gaze at the impressive Cascade of Éventail (65m), Grand Saut (60m) and Saut Girard (35m) waterfalls. Bravest people can pass under the Grand Saut, whose form is like a tail of horse! Pay attention to the ruins of cereal mills, old ironwork and nail factories (From the 15th

Century, the valley had a strong historical background, using water energy). On the path, you will find the Lacuzon cave, which was the headquarters of the famous captain Lacuzon while fighting for independence of the

Franche – Comté region in the 17th Century. For more detailed information, you can visit the house of waterfalls located next to cascade of Éventail (information screens, museographic space).

Waterfall of Quinquenouil le Saut Girard

Waterfall of Eventail

Pratical information about Hérisson walk: • Time and distance of the whole path: 2h50 / 7.8 km / 255 metres of difference in height. You can download the path of Hérisson waterfalls in our website www.juralacs.com • The path is not a circuit, you must go to one way and return (you must go back to your departure to reach your car). • It’s a walking path, it is advisable to wear walking shoes. • Do not go out of the marked paths (be careful with children). • For babies, take a baby sling (path is not possible with push chair). • Respect fauna and flora. Access to waterfalls: 3 ways to access the waterfalls: • Parking of Eventail (access to the house of waterfalls): from Doucier, take road D326 and enter Valley of Hérisson. • Parking of Saut de la Forge: access from the center of Bonlieu. • Parking of Saut Girard: go to Ilay and Hameau de La Fromagerie by road D39 or D75. Information Point of Hérisson waterfalls (open from June to August) - Tel.: 03 84 25 79 05 4 . discover : waterfalls

Waterfall of Quinquenouille (G3) A marked path (8.5 km) leaving Chatonnay (direction Dramelay) will make you discover this nice fall (35 m.) as well as the small medieval bridge going over the Dard.

Giants passing and fall of Saisse (C5) In Pont de Poitte, at the level of the bridge crossing the village, stop for a moment and look at the “Giants’ Cauldron”. In reality, these whirlpools were formed over time thanks to the combined forces of the Ain rapids and stones that by repeated friction dug out the rock. In the port of Saisse, you will discover the spectacular way that the Ain falls into Lake Vouglans: this is the Saisse fall,

well known to fishermen. It is most impressive in winter.

Lakes

Site of 7 lakes or « Little Scotland » This site on the plateau of Frasnois and Bonlieu has seven lakes. It was also called “Little Scotland” by the writer Charles Nodier because these still wild lakes look like region of Loch Mare. Petit and Grand Maclu, Ilay, Narlay, Vernois, Fioget and Bonlieu, each lake has its own identity and characteristics. Lakes of Maclu (B9) Grand and Petit Maclu communicate with each other. Borders have rich ecological environment. Take the path along the 2 lakes under the cliffs. You will almost walk on water! 2nd

Lake Ilay (B9) When the weather is clear, the

lake's turquoise waters and the backdrop of the cliffs will surprise you. A monastery was founded on the island of the lake (about the year 1000 AD). 2nd

Lake Narlay (B9) It was born from a rock subsistence. It is the deepest lake in the Jura (48 m.).

Lake Bonlieu (C8) Set into the forest and dominated by a rocky, lake Bonlieu is one of the most beautiful sites in the Jura. Nice point of view from belvedere of Ronde. In 1170, Thibert de Montmorot founded the Abbey « Chartreuse Notre-Dame de Bonlieu » next to the lake. The place was suitable for isolation and search of tranquillity.

Lake Fioget (A9) Beautiful small and wild lake surrounded by forests on one side and by fields on the other side (private).

2nd

Lake Vouglans (C5 to G5) Third largest dam reservoir in France with its length of 35 km. It was flooded in 1968, covering the Ain valley. Its turquoise blue water will make you forget the destiny of the villages and the Vaucluse charterhouse sunk at the bottom of the former valley. Today, the lake is a paradise for swimmers, fishers, walkers and lovers of water activities. 2nd

Lake Chalain (A7) A glacial lake, this is the largest natural lake in the Jura. Neolithic vestiges were exceptionally preserved under the level of the lake (villages with houses built on piles 3000 years BC). You can not visit the archaeological site. For more information: www.chalain.culture.gouv.fr. Today, lake Chalain has large

Lake Vernois (B8) This small lake appears all of a sudden, coming out of nowhere, surrounded by the forest. No facilities on the lake. You can take photos or admire the cows using the lake as watering place!

facilities to host tourists and sportsmen (www.lac-chalain.com). Nice point of view from belvedere of Fontenu. 2nd

Lakes of Clairvaux Les Lacs (C6 and D6) The small, private lake bears its name well since it has a surface of 17.1 ha, while the large one has 56.5 ha. Under the water of the latter, the remains of a lake town have been discovered (exhibition in summer in « salle des fêtes »). Next to the village, the grand lake has a lot of facilities for lovers of water activities (handicap access to water).

Lake Val (B7) Situated at the bottom of Hérisson falls, the lake Val is the first step of an already tortuous route travelled by the torrent called “le Hérisson”. Be careful, whirlpools make it dangerous. Nice point of view from belvedere of Dame Blanche.

Lake Chambly (B7) Very pretty, small, wild-looking lake (35 ha) with its shores bordered with reeds and its marshy approaches (private property).

Lake Coiselet 2nd

Lake Coiselet (I4) It was flooded in 1970 after lake Vouglans. It is fed by the Bienne and Ain rivers. Surrounded by cliffs, it offers wonderful landscapes. 2nd

Lake Conflans (J3) At the confluent of the Ain and the Valouse rivers, the lake straddles two regions: the Jura and the Ain. Its water is rich in pike, perch and pike-perch. Lake Onoz (E5) Small lake near the village with the same name, it has the particularity of « shrinking » slowly as

time goes by. Its surface in 1986 was 1.7 ha, and 0.87 ha in 1993. This is a lake becoming filled up: little by little it is silting up naturally to become marsh, prairie and finally forest. 2nd

Lake Viremont (G4) It is lost at an altitude of 656 m in a green nook with a wealth of flora and fauna (Natura 2000 area).

Others lakes in the surroundings:

Étival lakes (Grand and petit lake) (E7) Situated in Étival, both lakes have a great environment between mountain and plateau. 1st

Lake Antre (G6) Perched above the village of Villards d'Héria, lake Antre is overlooked by an enormous cliff, called "la Roche d'Antre". Its water takes 12 hours before spurting further out onto the Gallo-Roman site of Villardsd’Héria.

You will find other pretty lakes, in the Natural Park of HautJura:

Cave Balme d’Épy (H1) A Balme is a cave which opens in the cliff face and the source of a stream. Much of the 170-metre network is submerged. A Virgin and an altar are to be found in the cave, giving it the appearance of the cave at Lourdes. Reculée of La Frasnée, a village at the end of the world (D7) This village has been entered in the inventory of Jura picturesque sites. You will find all the characteristics of Jura relief: reculée, waterfall, river, forest and prairie. Go over the small bridge that spans the
