Must-see SIGHTS
SAINT-JEAN CAP- FERRAT
Its history
Nestled amid an arid and rocky land, the hamlet of Saint-Jean was once home to fishermen and farmer families clustered around the church and harbour area. In the late 19th century, the Compagnie Générale des Eaux (water company), created an artificial lake on the CapFerrat which developed a dense and varied vegetation on the peninsula. Wealthy families from Nice started coming to the peninsula for their family outings and from the end of the 19th century, crowned heads and aristocracy would also come for their holidays. The history of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat was made!

Museums & heritage
Ephrussi de Rothschild Villa and Gardens
Inspired by the Italian Renaissance style, this palace features a range of styles from various eras, with strong Lombard,Venetian and Spanish influences.
The estate was built between 1905 and 1912. Baroness Béatrice de Rothschild fell in love with this magical setting, and her crazy dream led her to transform these 10 hectares of unspoilt land into a haven that would house her collection of artworks (18th century furniture, china from the Sèvres and Vincennes Royal Manufacturers, and many more).
The Baroness bequeathed the entire villa and all its treasures to the Académie des Beaux-Arts de l’Institut de France, which took ownership after her death in 1934.
The villa is surrounded by nine themed gardens and overlooks the bays of Villefranche-sur-Mer and Beaulieu-sur-Mer. Magical musical water displays take place in the French-style garden every 20 minutes, adding an enchanting feeling to the place.
Audio guides available in 9 languages.

Villa Santo Sospir*
The multi-talented Jean Cocteau was a loyal visitor to the French Riviera, leaving his mark on many towns.
In 1950, when the poet had just finished filming “Les Enfants Terribles“, his friend Francine Weisweiller invited him to spend a few days at her villa in Cap-Ferrat.
Seduced by its beauty and magic, Jean Cocteau stayed at the villa for several months and soon became a regular visitor.
During his first stay, he began to ‘tattoo’ the villa’s bare white walls.
He once said, “A young woman lives in Santo Sospir. It wasn’t a question of decorating the

walls, but rather drawing on its skin: I created linear frescoes with minimal colour to bring out the tattoos. Santo Sospir is a tattooed villa.“
*Occasional visits may be possible according to the conditions set by the owners upon its reopening (end of 2024).
Acquired over the decades, the works of art that adorn the streets of the peninsula invite contemplation and arouse curiosity. Sculptures, friezes, frescoes, and trompe l’oeil can be discovered during an artistic stroll through the village.
Listed as a Monument Historique (national heritage site) since 1929.
La chapelle Saint-Hospice (The chapel)
The Saint-Hospice chapel was built in 11th century on the ruins of a sanctuary. It owes its name to the Benedictine monk Hospitius who lived in one of its towers around 557 AD. In a state of total deprivation, he inflicted heavy punishment on himself to ensure he fully deserved his place in heaven.
The legend says that when the Lombards invaded the coast (as the monk had predicted), one of them wanted to kill the hermit, but his arm was suddenly paralyzed, causing him to drop his sword to the ground. Once he was freed, the Lombard was baptized and went on to preach the Gospel. Many miraculous acts of healing have been attributed to him, including curing a deaf person, a blind person and a woman possessed by demons.
Its appearance has evolved over time. It was fully restored by Duke Charles Emmanuel II of Savoy in the 17th century, then enlarged and equipped with an altar in the 18th century. The portico dates from 1826. Its most recent renovation took place between 2020 and 2022. The chapel was once an important pilgrimage site and housed up to 140 ex-votos.
The bronze Virgin
Restored in 2022, the bronze Virgin (11m40 high) beside the chapel was built in 1903 at the request of a wealthy merchant from Nice after he was granted a wish. It was sculpted by Tranquillo Galbusieri.
The graveyard by the sea
Nestled at the top of the Pointe Saint-Hospice, the municipal cemetery of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat feels like the edge-of-the-world. It was created in 1905 thanks to the generosity of Auguste Gal, a rich merchant from Nice, who provided the land. Located at the foot of the Saint-Hospice chapel and the bronze statue of the Virgin, the graveyard by the sea overlooks the Mediterranean Sea and offers exceptional views. A place for peacefulness and contemplation.
L'église Saint Jean-Baptiste (The church)
The Saint Jean-Baptiste church dates from around the11th century. It is a very simple church but it features beautiful decorations. Two extensions were built in the 19th century, and the presbytery was built in 1846. The major restoration works between 1992 and 1998 gradually gave the monument its finished appearance that you can admire today. Every year, on the 24th of June, the whole village celebrates its Patron Saint’s day by organising a procession that involves carrying the statue of Saint Jean-Baptiste down to the jetty at the old harbour.
Located at the foot of the chapel, it owes its name to the Belgian victims of the First World War who lost their lives at the Villa Les Cèdres.
This property, previously owned by King Leopold II of Belgium, was transformed into a military hospital by his nephew Albert I during the war.
The semaphore
The semaphore was built in 1862 by decision of Napoleon III. It belongs to the French Navy and its current missions include, among others, the regulation of maritime traffic and the monitoring of fires on the coast. It culminates at 143m of altitude.
The Cap-Ferrat lighthouse
Built in 1832, the lighthouse was designed to replace an ancient 16th century fire tower. Destroyed in 1944, it was rebuilt in its current form after the war. It offers unique views that extend from l’Estérel as far as the Italian coast. The lighthouse is currently closed to the public.
The lighthouse is listed as a Monument Historique (National Heritage site) since 2012.
fountains
These two fountains, one at the foot of the lighthouse and the other at the beginning of the Saint-Hospice trail, were inaugurated in September 2007 in the presence of James Kidner, the Director of the COEXIST Foundation, Cherie Blair, wife of the former Prime Minister Tony Blair, and the singer Bono from the band U2. The COEXIST foundation works to build relationships between different religions. Its logo consists of the Muslim Crescent, the Jewish Star of David and the Christian Cross.
The port
It is around the port, with its fishing activities, a vital source to the village, that Saint-JeanCap-Ferrat rose and developed.
The old port, where the current Lindbergh quay is located, was built by the prisoners of the Villefranche-sur-Mer prison between 1840 and 1876. There are shops and a restaurant, the Charlie Chaplin events hall and cinema, the Seashell Museum and the SOS Grand Bleu Association.
In 1972, the new port was created. It was renovated between 2016 and 2018. It can now accommodate 560 permanent and passing boats. The shopping quay, called Quai Virgile Allari, is ideal for strolling, dining, and relaxing.
There are restaurants, shops and art galleries, as well as the Espace Neptune, where exhibitions, concerts and other events are regularly organised.
In the spring of 2023, the Tourist Office opened its new premises on the port.

The peninsula is part of two maritime areas dedicated to protecting and preserving local wildlife and flora. The municipality is actively working to promote these two sites.
The Natura 2000 Cap-Ferrat Site
100% marine, it extends from CapFerrat to Cap d’Ail (approximately 9,000 hectares) and plunges to depths of over 1,263 meters. Its biodiversity deserves special attention. Among the 13 sites of the Nice Côte d’Azur Métropole, it is the only marine one.
It is part of the European Natura 2000 network, which includes more than 26,000 terrestrial and marine sites across the European Union.
