rue beauty comes from within. This is a phrase I have been told all of my life, used as inspiration to be nice and caring to the people around me. On the surface I believe the saying pertains to personality and being a pleasant person, but I’ve recently discovered how it can also be related to skin care.

You see, one of the key factors to adequate skin moisturization is water. Drinking plenty of water each day keeps you hydrated and healthy. It also protects skin from drying out. If your customers think of this as the foundation, the very basic step in any skin care routine, then they are destined for unmatched beauty.

Another saying you may be familiar with is “you are what you eat.” This could not be any truer as a healthy diet yields a healthy appearance and overall being. So why would skin be any different? It isn’t and that is why leading an active and fit lifestyle is vital to being in good shape and looking stunning.

The aforementioned is the first step to a glowing appearance, long before even one smear of foundation is applied to the skin. An Annual Guide to Black Skin Care

W

hen it comes to skin care, one size does not fit all. Women of color have unique skin care needs not seen in the general market.

Hyperpigmentation, commonly known as dark marks, blemishes, spots or skin discolorations are one of the challenges women with richer skin tones face. These “spots” can be caused by a number of factors including acne, tweezing hairs, skin disease or hormonal changes. Products equipped with hydroquinone can help safely fade these spots. Consumers should check the concentration. “High concentrations (ranging from 6 to 10 percent) can result in a condition that causes darkening of the skin,” notes Dr. Susan C. Taylor, author of “Brown Skin: Dr. Susan Taylor’s Prescription for Flawless Skin, Hair and Nails.” It is generally recognized that over-thecounter products that have 1 to 2 percent hydroquinone are safe. Dermatologists can prescribe higher amounts (3 to 4 percent) as they monitor their patients’ progress.

Whatever the solution, black women are looking for “even” skin tone. If women are prone to developing these marks, the

need for sun protection is crucial. “Sun exposure can make them worse,” says Ambi Skincare (www.ambiskincare.com) which has a long history of making products for African-American women. That is why many skin care products, including moisturizers and makeup, come equipped with a built-in protection called the Sun Protection Factor (SPF). “The sun’s rays constantly reach the earth’s surface, so sunscreen should be worn throughout the year, rain or shine,” says Ambi.

Acne is another problem that black women often face; it is not just a teenage skin condition. Cleansers designed to treat acne with ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide help clear breakouts.

Keeping skin clean reduces the incidence of pimples, blemishes, and blackheads. Some women of color do not even realize that they have acne, says Dr. Jeanine Downie, the dermatologist who co-authored “Beautiful Skin of Color: A Comprehensive Guide to Asian, Olive and Dark Skin.” She notes that some people come into her office thinking they have a rash, a fungus or cancer. “When I tell them they have acne, they disagree

with me. They say it’s not like the acne that I see on TV, or on my white friends.”

Dermatologists like Downie and Taylor are serving the unique needs of women of color. More and more products for this growing audience are coming aboard. Retailers who understand the unique needs of black women will find great opportunities for growth in their businesses.

TV broadcaster and documentarian Al Roker estimated that there are 100 million ethnically diverse people in America in “America’s Ethnic Skin: An Al Roker Health Special” (http://www.womensderm.org/ ethnicskin/video/index.html). As for the impact of women of color, there should be no doubt. Author Miriam Muley, former Soft Sheen executive vice president and Avon vice president of marketing, noted that “eighty-eight percent of the absolute growth in the U.S. female population from 2000 to 2007 was attributable to women of color.” She is the author of “The 85% Niche – The Power of Women of All Colors -- Latina, Black, and Asian” (www.85percentniche.com).

Many African-Americans want relief from what many term as “ashy skin.” Everyone sloughs off dead skin cells, but because of the contrast with darker skin, these cells are more apparent on a darker “canvas.” An SMSi Consumer Research study conducted among black women in three cities found that heavy moisturizing is pro-actively sought in products used on the face, hands, feet and body. Acne - A skin eruption that begins below the skin’s surface resulting in blocked, inflamed pores.

Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids - Natural acids from plants, fruits and foods that can renew and enhance the skin’s texture by unplugging clogged pores and minimizing fine lines and wrinkles.

Ashy Skin - The appearance of grayness on skin of color created by the contrast of sloughed off dead skin cells with dark skin.

Eczema - Scaly, red, itchy and sometimes oozing skin lesions which may appear ashen, brown or gray on skin of color.

Hydroquinone - A chemical lightening agent that blocks the enzyme that produces color in melanocyte cells.

Hyperpigmentation - Excessive pigmentation or darkening of the skin as melanocyte cells go into overdrive producing discoloration in spots, patches or large areas of the skin.

Hypopigmentation – Loss of pigment as melanocyte cells fail to produce pigment, causing light patches or spots.

Salicylic Acid – Another name for beta hydroxy acid; it can smooth skin tone, even out color and improve texture.

In your opinion, what is the most important step in any skin care regimen? Do you have any tips on how to effectively market products in this department to customers?

“There is no doubt that your skin needs special treatment since it is the body’s largest organ. Moreover, understanding your skin type is a key component to beautifying your skin. In my opinion the most important skin care regimen involves keeping the skin moist, elastic, and smooth.

The first step to achieving smooth and moist skin…

1. Clean your skin with water and chemical free products (natural soaps or cleansing products) every day.

2. Scrub your skin regularly to remove dead cells and smooth the skin.

3. Moisturize your skin with lotion and cream containing high doses of vitamin E. Other helpful skincare tips: •

Maintain a healthy diet to include plenty of fruits and vegetables (strawberries, cranberries, blueberries, onions, garlic and broccoli) as they are great sources of antioxidants.

The African black soap is an indigenous product made and used widely in different ways across West Africa.

It has many ethnic names, but for the purpose of this article we are going to discuss the traditional black soap that originates from the region around Central and Northern Ghana; this is the product that has had a success in the American natural health circuit.

In Ghana it is known by its local name ‘Alata Samina’. Throughout West Africa the recipes for making this soap are as diverse as the ethnic groups within. Traditional custom required that these recipes be kept secret. The craft of making soaps has stayed in traditional villages and been maintained as an art form for generations. Thus there is some expertise required in being able to tell quality differences between black soap products that are currently available in the market.

The soap has a dark brown, light black or marbled color; its shape will vary according to the clay mould used in production. It has an earthly natural aroma. Do not confuse this with the generally available commercial versions of the black soap.

The main ingredient to making African black soap is plantain skin. A plantain does look like a banana, but is cooked or baked for food in African, Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Plantain skins are sun dried and then roasted in open pit clay ovens and in the ground. The amount used and maintained constant heat will dictate the color of the final soap product. This mixture is added to another ash-burnt mixture of either bark of silk cotton tree or bark of shea butter tree in addition to the bark of the plantain plant. Cocoa pod, the shell of the Cocoa fruit is used with or as a substitute for plantain skin. Depending on the region, specific bark mixtures vary on availability adding another challenge to quality control for commercial purposes. Water is added to this mixture and while being cooked, the mixture thickens.

The oils are then added. Variations of these include shea butter, coconut oil, palm kernel oil, palm oil and cocoa pods. Other blended ingredients include Osun (carmwood) and pure honey. When the mixture cools, it is then shaped into different forms for distribution. The one theme to remember is that in this whole process there are no chemicals used.

The use of the plantain skin as the base ingredient not only gives it its color, but also the source of its chemical analysis indicates its richness in vitamin A, E and iron. It acts as an antioxidant and therefore helps skin regeneration while vitamin E assists in skin healing. Lye chemical is not used in the making of this soap.

This soap-making tradition has withstood the test of time in both quality and purity, making African black soap a market hot commodity. It is used generally as a skin cleanser for most skin types. Specifically it is used as an defoliant, dark spot remover; a pretreatment for oily skin and other skin ailments like skin rashes, acne and skin discolorations. It can also be used as a shampoo and or as a treatment for dandruff and minor scalp irritations. Some amount of self education and experimentation is required. For example, the curative aspects of black soap are derived from traditional history and information passed along traditionally. The internet is full of positive testimonials, but these must be taken cautiously since most internet sites seem to be promoting an ulterior sales pitch.

In reference to the packaging and forms of the product, let’s consider RA Cosmetics. The company utilizes this original soap at its plant in Ghana to create commercially packaged soaps for the beauty industry. RA’s 100% Black soap is packaged in 5oz blocks, in addition to the 4oz and 8oz containers. There is no difference in ingredients between the solid and the liquid soaps. These are highly concentrated ingredients and therefore always advisable to apply using a face towel, a scrubber or onto palm of your hand.

아프리카 흑비누의 주성분은 질경이 풀의 껍질이다. 질 경이는 모양이 바나나처럼 생겼는데, 아프리카는 물론, 남미, 카 리브 여러 나라에서는 식용으로도 사용한다. 질경이를 햇빛에 말 린 다음, 진흙 구덩이를 파서 넣거나 땅에 묻고 굽는다. 질경이의 사용량과 지속적인 가열의 정도에 따라 최종적인 비누의 색상이 결정된다. 그 다음, 질경이 껍질뿐 아니라 잿더미에서 구운 판야 나무 껍질이나 시어 버터 나무의 껍질을 함께 섞는다. 코코아 깍 지와 코코아 열매 껍질을 함께 사용하거나 질경이 껍질 대신 사 용하기도 한다. 지역에 따라 혼합되는 나무 껍질은 다양한데 상 품으로서의 품질이나 효능을 조절하기 위함이다. 조리 과정 에서 혼합물의 점도를 높이기 위해서 물을 첨가한다. 그 다 음, 오일을 넣게 되는데, 시어 버터나 코코넛 오일, 야자나무 씨 오일, 야자 오일 그리고 코 코아 꼭지 등이 다양하게 사용 된다. 그 밖의 재료로는 Osun 이라고 흔히 불리는 서아프리 카산 캠우드나 꿀이 사용된다. 이 모든 재료를 섞은 혼합물이 식으면, 다양한 모양의 틀을 사 용해서 모양을 만들게 된다. 이 모든 과정에서 한가지 꼭 기억 할 것은 어떤 화학적인 첨가물 도 사용되지 않는다는 것이다.

기본 재료로 질경이 껍질을 사용하는 것은 단지 색상만을 내기 위함이 아니라, 화학적 분석으로 볼 때, 질경이 껍 질에는 비타민 A와 E, 철분이 풍부하게 함유되어 있기 때문이다. 이 성분이 항산화제 역할을 해서 비타민 E가 피부 치유와 재생을 돕는 것이다. 화학적 가공 염색제는 이 비누의 제조 과정에서 전 혀 사용되지 않는다. 이러한 전통적인 비누 제조 방법은 오랜 세월을 거쳐 품질과 순 도가 검증되었기 때문에, 아프리카 흑비누가 지금까지도 상품으 로 크게 사랑받을 수 있는 것이다. 이 제품은 대부분의 피부 타입 을 위한 클린저로 주로 사용된다. 특별히 다크 스팟 제거제나 지 성 피부의 기초 트리트먼트로 사용하기도 하며, 피부 발진이나 여드름, 착색 등의 치료에도 사용된다. 뿐만 아니라 샴푸, 특히 비듬이나 가벼운 두피 질환에도 사용한다. 물론 이런 용도로의 사용을 위해서는 사전 지식이나 실험적인 사용이 필요하다. 흑비 누의 치료적인 효과는 전통적으로 내려오는 역사적 측면이나 여 러 자료들에서 찾아볼 수 있는데, 인터넷을 통해서 다양하고 긍 정적인 사용 후기들을 볼 수가 있다. 물론 이런 후기들 가운데는 제품 판매를 의도한 홍보성 내용들도 다량 포함되어 있으므로 주 의하기 바란다.

포장 및 제품의 형태를 언급하자면, 우선 RA 화장품을 고려해 볼 수 있겠다. 이 회사의 경우 가나산 나무를 사용한 오리 지널 비누를 제품으로 포장해서 판매하고 있다. RA의 100% 흑 비누는 5oz 크기의 사각 형태로 포장이 되며, 4oz와 8oz 용기 포 장으로도 제조된다. 고체와 액체 비누의 성분에는 차이가 없다. 이 제품은 상당히 고농축의 성분을 함유하므로, 사용 시 세안용 타월이나 스크러버, 또는 손바닥에 먼저 적용해서 피부에 사용하 는 것이 바람직하다.

ark skin was once thought to be stronger than other skin types and sun-proof. New studies show that under stress from cosmetics and chemicals, black skin can react as, if not more strongly than other skin types.

Melanoma (skin cancer) is harder to recognize because darker pigmentation hides redness, the typical signpost of sensitivity.

Skin cancer is rare but more deadly for people of color because it is usually detected much later. Dark pigmentation also blocks most of the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun that are responsible for most forms of skin cancer.

Inherent from the African heritage where the climate is extremely hot and humid, African-American skin produces more natural skin oils (sebum) than other cultures. Oily skin aids in keeping skin cool and dark pigmentation prevents skin diseases from UV rays. Black skin isn’t completely sun-proof either. While extra melanin (color) protects it from UV rays it is still vulnerable to damage from them. The best bet for customers with dark skin is to use appropriate sun protection and stick to a gentle care regimen.

Q: I’ve noticed that my complexion has become

blotchy lately, with some patches of skin turning visibly dark. What could be causing this?

A: It sounds like you are suffering from melasma, a fairly common

form of hyperpigmentation that occurs when a woman’s body overproduces melanin. Scientists aren’t sure exactly why some women get melasma and others don’t, but the condition has been linked to estrogen, the female sex hormone. The two most common causes are birth control pills and pregnancy, both of which boosts a woman’s estrogen level. Other less likely causes of hyperpigmentation include sensitivity to sunlight, an allergic reaction to perfume oils, or a skin injury from a cut, burn, or case of acne.

A: If you take the pill, you may want to consult your doctor about

switching birth control methods. You can also treat melasma with a prescription bleaching cream containing hydroquinone. Don’t use a hydroquinone ointment on skin that is being treated for acne with benzyl peroxide because these substances can worsen melasma if combined. Also, be sure to wear a sunscreen when outdoors, since exposure to solar rays darkens blotches. Most people of color mistakenly think that sunscreens are not necessary due to darker skin filtering out most of the UV rays. You can also even out your complexion with a foundation that offers coverage and protection.

A dermatologist has several options for evening the skin tone, the most common of which is the use of chemical bleaching creams that work by blocking the formation of new pigment. All the agents used contain one basic ingredient: hydroquinone. This is the same chemical found in over the counter products. The difference is in the concentration levels. Over the counter products have about two percent hydroquinone, whereas the prescription medications have concentrations ranging from four percent to ten percent.

Q: Lately my eyelashes have been falling out more than usual. Why? What can I do?

A: Due to the fact that hair and skin are so closely related, this

question is valid to this subject matter. Some lash loss is inevitable, and to keep lashes healthy treat them with care. Apply and remove mascara gently, or use a makeup removal lotion specially designed to condition lashes. If you curl your lashes, do it before applying mascara to minimize lash damage. Be sure to keep moisturizers and sunscreens away from your eyes, since rubbing irritated eyes will pull out lashes as well.

If your lashes fall out in patches, begins to itch, or you lose hair from other parts of your body as well, consult a doctor or dermatologist. Hair on the head has a life span of five to seven years whereas hair on other parts of the face and body has a life span of only a few months.

In conclusion, sun protection is vital for all skin types as a preventative measure against damaging UV rays that aggravate skin discoloration.

If used on a daily basis, a sunscreen can help eliminate irregular pigmentation and a dermatologist can help determine the best protection level for each skin tone. An added plus, many of the moisturizers and foundations on the market today have sunscreen built in. Major advances are constantly being made in the area of skin care, so if a customer’s skin tone is less than perfect, they should seek professional treatment and celebrate their skin’s special tone.

etailers who want to connect with African-American consumers will do well to learn about all sectors of black culture including its Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Most of these institutions of higher learning and education in the United States were established before 1964. The

amended Higher Education Act of 1965 defines an HBCU as: “...any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans…” Every year there is a White House Initiative on HBCUs. This year the two-day national conference will be held in Washington, D.C., September 25 – 26.

Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, and D.C. are just some homes to HBCUs. Atlanta is considered

an HBCU mecca with over 10,000 students studying at Spelman College, Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morris Brown College and the Morehouse School of Medicine. The campuses of Howard University and The University of D.C., both in the nation’s capital, are on federally chartered land. Baltimore’s Coppin State and Morgan State University have long roots in providing education to black people in the northeast. Paul Quinn College, a smaller institution in Dallas, is the oldest HBCU west of the Mississippi River. Although Chicago does not have an HBCU, Chicago State University has a large number of African-Americans studying at the institution.

HBCU: Interdenominational Theological Center Founded: 1958 Students: 479 Website: www.itc.edu Key Information: The Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) was founded in 1958 through the mutual efforts of four denominations, whose mission it was to educate Christian leaders for ministry and service in the Church and the global community. It is an urban, private, nonprofit, and co-educational graduate school of theology. The ITC mission includes the education of Black church scholars, faith-based solutions, and men and women prepared to lead in church and society.

HBCU: Coppin State University (CSU) Founded: 1938 Students: 3,875 Website: www.coppin.edu Key Information: Coppin State University (CSU) was founded as a four-year institution in 1938; it became Coppin State University in 2004. The university was named after Fanny Jackson Coppin who pioneered the school’s teacher education in the early 1900’s. This west Baltimore institution provides a wide array of undergraduate and graduate programs with 53 majors and nine graduate degree programs. Most students at CSU come from Baltimore’s 50 plus metropolitan area public schools.

HBCU: Morgan State University Founded: 1867 Students: 6,891 Website: www.morgan.edu Key Information: Founded in 1867 as the Centenary Biblical Institute by the Methodist Episcopal Church and later named Morgan State University (MSU), it did not become a public university until 1939. MSU has nine colleges and schools of academics. In 1975, the first lacrosse team at an HBCU was established. The school‘s marching band has played at NFL games and presidential inaugurations.

City: Washington, D.C. HBCU: Howard University Founded: 1867 Students: 10,623 Website: www.howard.edu Key Information: Howard University (HU) is an institution with a tradition of quality education since 1867. This private, co-educational university’s students are diverse in culture, religion, sports, art and politics. HU is one of the only 48 U.S. private, doctoral research universities ranked by the Carnegie Institute. It’s comprised of 12 schools and colleges with students in more than 120 areas of study.

amily businesses usually have great strengths from the family members’ commitment and long schooling in the culture and operation of the business. But the family aspect also creates specific issues that have to be considered when considering strategy.

The involvement of, and interaction with, a family is obviously the key difference between family businesses and others. Families are emotional units with very complex dynamics and relationships that involve a whole range of issues other than the business. In dealing with a family business it is therefore critical to recognize that this is the case and to take into account the family aspects of the decisions that need to be made and the influence this will have on decision making.

In any business, there will be at least two differing interest groups, the owners of the business and the workers in the business (and some people of course may be both owners and workers). The owners of a business may have quite different core interests (their financial return on their shares for example) from those of the workers in the business (security of employment for example).

In a family business this is then also overlaid with family membership.

There may be family members therefore who fall into any of the above categories, owners, workers, owner/workers, or be outside the business completely.

This leads to business owning families differing in the degree to which business decisions will be made in the interest of the family, or of the business. In some cases, the business is run purely in the business’s best interests. In others it is run purely in the interests of the controlling family. Most family businesses operate however at a point somewhere between these two extremes, although the way in which family or business interests will be balanced in any particular decision may vary depending on the matter involved.

Business Tips 2. More is more! One tactic to attract more attention to those harder to see areas is to be excessive. Go over the top with adding display accessories such as wobblers, shelf talkers, lighting or sirens that can’t help but be noticed. Depending on the type of shop interior you’re working with, you might think that this kind of in your face technique will ruin the visual appeal of your displays, but don’t mistake this merchandising method for simply cluttering up a space—it’s all about creating contrast with the surroundings. So if your displays are very minimal, you’ll have success creating displays that are excessive by your regular standards, though in fact they may be quite refined when compared to displays used by other retailers.

3. Shine a little light! Have you ever been in the audience at a concert or stage show? Did you notice how effectively the spot lights are used to guide your eye to where the action is?

Probably not, because you were too busy taking it all in, but this same effect can be created in a retail environment. A more brightly lit area will command attention regardless of where it is. Just be sure not to over do it; you don’t want to steal center stage from star performers. Just a small increase in light levels can be enough to turn a dark corner from a dead spot to a valuable piece of promotional real estate. What’s best is that this technique is frequently overlooked by retailers, so you’ll be one step ahead!

4. Razzle dazzle ‘em! Use color to draw the eye.

Again, the amount of color required will depend on the other merchandising displays in your shop. For example, a single block of color will grab attention when placed within a very busy merchandising display. You only need to think of the Coca-Cola displays in refrigerators and supermarket aisles for proof of this tactic—when viewing the products on display, shoppers are hit with a wall of red that instantly grabs their attention. It’s simple and very effective.

5. Focus, Spotlight, Highlight! Focusing your targeted space into a dedicated display zone for a single product or product range gives it a cohesive and considered feel, thus elevating its importance and commanding attention. “A product range with its own dedicated zone? This must be worth checking out,” the shoppers reason. It’s a simple, but classic “less is more” approach—less headaches and more sales!

Another month has gone by and it is time for another word from the King of Locs. We have now closed the first quarter of this year. Time truly does fly by. It has made me think about the passage of time and its effect on trend and profit in the hair care industry. I was having a meeting with a few of my colleagues from the industry the other day and one of them asked my opinion on the sudden rise in natural hair care. You can contribute a portion of its popularity to pop culture. This happens in all industries. The largest consumer sector is comprised of costumers from ages 16 to 24 and they are largely influenced by what they see and hear from the entertainment world.

Let’s face it, we know many young people who would follow their favorite pop star or reality TV personality right off a cliff. So having a go at their hair style is no surprise. Just check out the rise in red hair color sales after the bold red tresses worn by one of the chart topping artist of today. I believe that in the case with natural hair care, its popularity can be attributed to something more than the fad effect. There is another major influence in play here when it comes to trends within ethnic communities— social change.

If you take a look at the last rise in natural hair care we see the Afro in full form in the 1970s. People wore it in a slightly different style. It was shaped and defined as opposed to the free expressive form we see today. The ‘60s was a time of turbulent struggle for equality for African-Americans. In the 1970s everyone wanted to make a statement that truly represented the pride and majesty of their ethnic culture. We wanted the world to accept us from the tips of our toes to the ends of each strand of our coiled tresses. We

wanted to not just live but display a sense of freedom and self assurance to the world. We saw the development of a hair care staple for example, Afro Sheen. The style was radical for its day but make no mistake the Afro had a standard. It was well groomed and shaped so it could be worn freely within society and even in the business world. Today, the natural hair care trend is back in full force and surprisingly enough in the same context if you take a closer look. We have just seen a rise in AfricanAmerican influence in industry, entertainment, finance and certainly politics. So we see a rise in self pride and self definition. The need to truly be you and be free in any setting is back.

The big difference today is that science and innovation have made it possible for those with curly hair types to have even more options for natural hair care than ever before. Women can transition from “relaxer” straight to curly, to kinky and back to straight again in a week’s time. They can have tight ringlets or wild coils. This is significant because it makes an argument for the need of the hair care industry to take a good look at the social climate as well as the current trends when designing, executing and retailing new products.

True innovators and entrepreneurs look ahead and do not follow concepts that already exist. You can often gauge what your customers are going to ask for before they hit stores by truly taking a look at the world around you. This is why a few truly dedicated companies have been developing quality products for natural hair care for the past few decades. We saw this time coming and sought to provide quality products to promote healthy natural hair and not just switch around a few of our factory machines to stop producing

relaxers and start putting instant natural hair in a jar. It takes special knowledge to produce products for natural hair care and putting a label on just anything and saying it is for natural hair care just isn’t going to cut it. There is much more to natural hair care than that.

When you look at the natural hair sector, you should keep in mind that you are not looking at a trend. You are looking at self identity. You are looking at a lifestyle. People have used this look to represent a struggle, a people and a culture. They are not going to put just any glob of grease in their hair. This customer is special and rightfully so. This is not just another head of hair; this is representative of self. I am happy that the industry has finally begun to recognize the natural hair category and I look forward to the profit potential in its expansion for us all, but be advised. I can tell you first hand as someone who truly loves the magnificent kink and coil, you are selling to a truly particular sector. I have lived natural hair care for the past 20 years. You can look at it like this for instance: Would you let a dentist perform open heart surgery or a math teacher do your taxes? So if you have questions about natural hair care just ask experts like the King of Locs because we live the experience. This customer likes to stick with the experts in the field. Manufacturers should keep quality in mind when developing products for natural hair maintenance. OTCs should stock products that have firm roots and dependability within the natural hair care industry to meet the needs of this discerning customer. So keep your shelves stocked with quality natural hair care products and like new growth during transition, you will see your profit spring fourth—naturally.

othing seems to be more frustrating than a zit that pops up just before a big date, an important work or school presentation, or even a job interview. Along with the stress encountered during these times also comes the hassle of dealing with an outbreak of acne. Learn how this condition develops, ways to prevent it and suggestions for treatment.

Acne shows no favoritism when it comes to skin type, age or race. Everyone is susceptible to its sneaky ways and can fall victim to the condition. An estimated 80 percent of people between the ages of 11 and 30 have experienced its symptoms at one point or another. Typically acne subsides near the end of that age spectrum, but sometimes it can continue decades later into life. Since the duration is uncertain, it is important that people know exactly what acne is, what contributes to the condition and how to help prevent it.

According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, “acne is a disorder resulting from the action of hormones and other substances on the skin’s oil glands (sebaceous glands) and hair follicles. These factors lead to plugged pores and outbreaks of lesions commonly called pimples or zits.” These lesions commonly occur on the face, upper back, neck, shoulders and chest.

Typical pimples are the most common form of acne that comes to mind when considering skin woes. However, know that there are multiple types of bumps that can surface. Acne is caused when various factors block follicles, restricting oil from making it to the skin’s surface for release. When this process is blocked a lesion forms. Besides the common white bump that is tempting not to pop, general inflammation, whiteheads and blackheads can result.

Although a definite cause of acne has yet to be determined, there are general factors that many agree can contribute to its existence.

Hormones play a large role in determining whether or not the condition hits. A hormonal imbalance—whether it be due to age and stage in the developmental cycle, genetics, point in the menstrual cycle for ladies, pregnancy or even medicine intake— can cause acne to flare up.

Furthermore, stress and lifestyle choices are also key players. Stress is inevitable, but finding ways to deal with it and not letting it bear too heavily on your life is vital. Because of stress eating and sleeping habits can suffer, in turn encouraging acne. No matter how difficult it may be, maintaining an adequate sleep pattern is one way to ward off the pesky bumps. Also, eating a balanced diet with plenty of water (8 glasses a day) is a big, beneficial practice as well. Staying hydrated and eating fruits high in vitamins as well as reducing fat, oil and sugar consumption will

Constant contact with the face is something else that is often hard to regulate. Urge those you come in contact with to keep their hands off of their face, decreasing the transmission of bacteria. Friction, like that caused by bicycle helmets and tight collars, can also contribute to acne. Be sure to wash your face regularly, but not with harsh cleansers and brushes. Instead use a gentle wash at least twice a day to clean out pores.

Treatment

If the actions taken to fight off bumps prove unsuccessful and acne seems determined to take up residence, there are ways to cure it. Along with a healthy routine of cleansing the skin regularly, physicians may prescribe lotions or topical medications. Still the most important steps to radiant skin come from the simple, fundamental factors to being healthy—eating right, drinking plenty of water, not smoking, staying clean and avoiding excessive tanning (even though it can make acne look better).

One food that is often blamed for acne’s appearance is chocolate. This is a myth that many people fall victim to.

Just like anything else, this treat should not be indulged in excessively, but take no mind to the claims that it can create acne.

What This Means to You as a Store Owner

Being a store owner in the beauty business puts you in a position to where you can help educate customers on ways to control, and perhaps prevent, their acne. By being equipped with this information you are a valuable asset to those who frequently shop at your store. For this reason you should be sure to stock up on mild facial cleansers as well as makeup and general beauty items that are not oily. You want to offer customers products that will help their condition, not worsen it.

Finally, should they ask you, always advise customers not to pop pimples. This can cause further irritation and possible permanent scarring. Instead of looking for the immediate, often detrimental solution, urge them to make worthwhile lifestyle changes to nip the problem at the source— from the inside.

치료 가벼운 뾰루지를 없애는데 실패하고 여드름으로 자리를 잡게될 경우, 치료할 수 있는 방법들이 있다. 우선 규칙적인 세안을 생활화하고, 의사의 처방에 따라 로션이나 연고를 사용할 수 있다. 그러나 피부를 밝고 건강하게 해주는 가장 중요한 단계는 간단한 것부터 비롯된다는 것을 명심하라. 바른 식습관과 충분한 수분 섭취, 금연, 청결한 피부 상태 유지, 지나친 피부 태닝은 피할 것(태닝이 여드름의 상태를 조금은 나아보이게 할 수 있을지 몰라도) 등의 근본적인 요건들이 중요하다.

여드름의 생성을 촉진시키는 음식 중 하나는 초콜렛이다. 초콜렛은 많은 사람들을 여드름의 희생양으로 만드는 일종의 전설과도 같다고할 수 있다. 이것을 지나치게 의식할 필요는 없지만, 적어도 초콜렛이 여드름을 생성하거나 악화시킬 수 있음을 인식해야할 것이다.

Rebecca Browne (RB): E.T. Browne Drug Company is one of the longest standing proprietors of skin and hair care products in the United States. The company has been family owned since the middle of the nineteenth century and has been under the current ownership since 1971.

Each brand has its own market position, typically driven by a key ingredient. But all carry the Palmer’s name which means top quality formulas that deliver the promised benefits. There is a strong problem/solution component to most of our products. The Skin Success brand for example offers targeted treatments for problem skin, especially the discolorations that can result from acne or pregnancy.

OTC: What are a few of E.T. Browne’s staple products? Which items have shown sustained growth and popularity over the years, and what made them so successful?

RB: Most people know E.T. Browne Drug Company as Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula (PCBF). Palmer’s introduced the original jar formula back in the early 1970’s and it’s still the gold standard for cocoa butter skin care. PCBF has a global fan base with products that are used daily throughout the world. Our record of consumer loyalty is something that we’re very proud of. We attribute this to an overall commitment to quality product formulas that has been the cornerstone of the company from the beginning. We hope that consumers know they can trust our products to deliver results. This results-driven product development is in Palmer’s DNA. We’ve found that long lasting success comes from identifying a problem and providing a convenient and affordable solution.

OTC: What indicates that it is time to release a new product and what factors determine the kind of product it will be?

RB: There are lots of factors that come into play. It’s important to know your consumer, understand his or her needs, and how those needs change and are influenced by trends. Engaging with consumers via Facebook and other social media is one way to keep a finger on the pulse of market trends. Getting out into the field—in stores and at consumer shows—is also very important. This all goes to identifying a need. Once you’ve got that it’s time to get the team together and develop a plan. From a timing perspective, ASAP always works!

OTC: Who do you consider to be the target audience for E.T. Browne’s products? Are there certain customers you cater to?

RB: At E.T. Browne we always say our consumer is anyone with skin or hair. That said women are our primary audience and for targeting purposes we usually narrow that down to women between the ages of 18-54. We cater to their varying skin and hair care needs whether it be dry, damaged skin; skin affected by discoloration; over-processed hair; or the ever changing skin conditions resulting from pregnancy.

OTC: What future plans are in store for the company through 2012?

RB: E.T. Browne is expanding their on shelf presence with facial care items under the Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula brand. We also have some new hair care items hitting the shelves, specifically a Coconut Oil Formula Keratin Kit and Curl Condition Hair Pudding as well as an Olive Oil Formula Curl Extend Hair Pudding.

OTC: What do you feel is the most important thing for multicultural beauty store owners to know when recommending your company’s products to their customers?

RB: That E.T. Browne values their consumers and we practice this in the development of new products. Products are carefully developed with consumers’ specific needs in mind.

무모한 도전?

1992년에 유학을 목적으로 도미한 민사장은, 2006년에 현재 의 Beauty and More 스토어를 시작하며 뷰티 업계에 뛰어들 었다고 한다. 그 전에는 대부분의 스토어 오너들과 마찬가지 로 뷰티 업계와는 무관한 삶을 살고 있었다고 한다. “처음에 스토어를 열고 아무것도 모를 당시, 주위에서는 ‘세일즈맨과 동성연애라도 하냐?’ 라는 농담을 들을 정도로 세일즈맨들과 많은 전화 통화를 했습니다” 라는 민사장은 모든 뷰티에 관한 지식을 바닥부터 혼자 터득해 나갔다고 한다. 심지어 뷰티 서 플라이 스토어에서 주력 제품이 헤어라는 사실도 모르고 시작 을 하였다고 하니, 그의 도전 정신에 박수라도 보내줘야 할 것 이다. 하지만, 이러한 것들이 민사장을 더욱 단단하게 만든 요 소가 되었다. “이제 와서 처음 스토어 오픈 할 때를 생각하면 ‘ 무식하면 용감하다’ 라는 말 밖에 떠오르지 않습니다” 라는 민 사장은 그렇기 때문에 하루에 3시간 밖에 잠을 자지 못할 정 도로 스토어에 매달렸다고 한다. 스토어를 종횡무진 뛰어다니 고, 세일즈맨들은 물론, 심지어 자신의 흑인 직원들을 통해서 닥치는 대로 뷰티에 관한 지식을 섭렵하였다고 한다. 그러한 노력이 바탕이 되어 6년이라는 길지 않은 시간 만에 ‘뷰티인’ 이 될 수 있었다고 한다.

자신의 색깔을 찾자 현재 민사장이 운영하는 Beauty and More 스토어는 25,000 sq ft 으로 지역에서 가장 큰 스토어 중 하나이다. 처음 스토 어에 발을 들여 놓는 순간 그 크기에 놀랄 수 밖에 없다. “흑 인 인구가 밀집한 지역이다 보니, 근처에 많은 동 업종 스토어 들이 있습니다” 라는 민 사장은 Beauty and More 의 가장 커 다란 특징으로 단연 ‘방대한 제품군’ 을 들 수 있다고 한다. “ 고객들에게 원 스탑 쇼핑이라는 환경을 만들어 주기 위해 많 은 노력을 하였습니다” 라는 민사장은 고객들이 필요로 하는 제품들을 최대한 구비해 놓는 것이 스토어를 운영하는데 가장 중요한 요소라고 말한다. 하지만 고객들이 점점 영리해 짐에 따라 그 것 만으로는 그들의 발길을 붙잡아 놓는데 충분하지 않다고 한다. 요즘 쇼핑객들은 지역의 스토어서 판매하는 제 품들의 가격들을 줄줄이 꾀고 있을 정도로 영리해지고 있다.

물론, 고객들의 발길을 움직이는 것은 가격만이 아니라는 사 실을 여러분들은 잘 알고 있을 것이다. 그 외의 요소들, 즉 자 신의 스토어에 대한 색깔을 정하여 고객들에게 어필하는 것이 매우 중요한 요소이다.

민사장의 스토어에는 또 한가지 색다른 점이 있었다. 스토어가 넓다 보니 많은 직원들을 고용하고 있는데, 그 모든 직원들이 지역의 흑인들이라는 점이다. 물론, 흑인 직원들만 을 고용하는 뷰티 스토어가 많이 있기는 하지만, Beauty and More 에는 10여명의 직원들이 모두 흑인인 탓에 오히려 민사 장이 이방인처럼 보이기도 하였다. 대부분의 스토어 오너들은 근면 성실과 믿음감, 그리고 소통의 원활함 때문에 한국인 직 원을 선호하지만, 민사장은 흑인을 상대로 한 비즈니스이다 보니 고객들과 더 친숙한 흑인들을 직원으로 채용한다고 한 다. “새로운 제품을 선택할 때 저희 매니저나 직원들과 상의하 면 실패하는 경우가 거의 없습니다. 흑인 직원을 고용하는 커 다란 장점 중에 하나라고 할 수 있습니다” 라는 민사장은, 직 원 본인들이 직접 사용하는 제품이고, 고객의 시선에서 제품 을 판단하기 때문에 성공률이 매우 높다고 한다. 요즘같이 하 루가 다르게 새로운 제품들이 쏟아져 나와 새로 취급할 제품 의 선택이 힘들어지는 상황에선 매운 유용한 점이 아닐 수 없 을 것이다.

조금만 여유를 갖자 인상이 서글서글한 호남형의 민사장은 인터뷰를 하는 동안 계속 해서 얼굴에 웃음을 띄고 있었다. “스토어를 운영하면서 많은 어 려움이 있었지만, 그러한 것들이 오히려 저에게 여유를 만들어 준 것 같습니다” 라는 민사장은 이제 스토어 경영에 한층 여유로 움이 생겼다고 한다. 스토어의 성공으로 인해 경제적인 여유로움 이 생긴 것이 아니라, 생각의 전환으로 인해 얻은 여유로움을 말 하는 것이다. 원래부터 남들보다 조금 낙천적인 성격을 가지고 있었다는 그는 여러 가지 힘든 상황들을 겪으면서 ‘불가항력’ 에 는 자신의 생각을 바꾸는 것이 가장 현명한 방법이라는 것을 깨달 았다고 한다. 그러한 그의 생각은 스토어 운영에도 반영되었다. 주위에서 가격으로만 경쟁을 하려는 스토어들을 보면서 안타까 운 마음이 든다고 하는 민사장은 “모두 이익을 내고자 스토어를 운영하는 것인데, 적정 가격을 유지하지 않는다는 것이 안타깝 습니다. 주위의 동 업종 스토어를 이긴다고 해서 내가 승리하는 것은 아닙니다” 라고 한다. 스토어를 운영하는 오너들이 처음부 터 주위의 스토어만을 공격하기 위해서 비즈니스를 시작하는 경

우는 없을 것이다. 모두 자신의 이익을 위해 스토어 경영을 시작 하지만, 서로 이해관계가 얽히고, 그릇된 경영 방식으로 인해 점 점 주위의 스토어들을 밟고 일어서야 한다는 생각에 사로 잡히는 경우가 대부분일 것이다. 주위의 경쟁을 물리쳤다고 자신이 우뚝 서게 될 것이라는 생각은 그야말로 오산이다. “주위의 경쟁상대 가 없어지면 다른 사람이 그 자리를 채우게 됩니다. 그러한 상황 은 끝없이 일어날 것입니다” 라는 민사장은 약간의 생각의 전환 을 갖고 서로에게 조금씩만 양보를 한다면 모두 공생할 수 있는 환경이 만들어 질 것이라 한다. “즐겁게 장사하는 것을 원하지 않 는 사람은 없을 것입니다” 라는 민사장의 말에 모두 공감할 것이 다. 하지만 그러한 환경은 스스로가 만들어 가는 것이다. 모두 자 신의 이익만을 생각하는 이기적인 생각이 작금의 긴장된 분위기 를 만들어 내는 것이다. 물론 너무나 상투적이게 들릴 수 있을 것 이다. 하지만 상투적인 것이 진리임을 생각해 봐야 할 것이다. 민 사장의 바램처럼 모두가 ‘즐거운 경영’ 을 할 수 있는 환경이 하 루 빨리 찾아오길 바라는 바이다.

Practice men’s haircutting – There is no substitute for

volume. Cut all the guys hair you can get your hands on. Start with family and friends. Get a part time job with a chain salon. They are the big volume men’s haircutters today. To cut more guys, go to where the guys are.

Develop an eye for men’s haircutting – Men’s fashion and sports magazines feature images of up to the minute styles and trends in men’s hair. Cut out pictures of current men’s hair trends and build a “look book” of haircuts to use to support consultation conversations.

Tap in to manufacturers – There are many products marketed to the men’s game. These manufacturers are eager to see you and your customers build business in their category. Many offer much support, programming and educational materials. They are eager to invest their marketing dollars in supporting you and thereby supporting and building their sales. Check their websites. Talk to their sales reps. Take advantage of all they offer to master the men’s game.

The men’s game is the hot beauty segment right now. Supporting your customers’ desires to play hard and play well in men’s hair will help you increase sales and margins as well as build stronger relationships.

Considering Promotions?

I have found that businesses struggle and many times fail due to poor management and the inability to make changes in your management structure in a timely manner. Promoting the right people into management and finding leaders within your organization can be challenging. You must consider promoting employees into management primarily because there are overwhelming signs from the employee that they are ready for more responsibilities and you have seen proven results.

Some employees are promoted because they are currently doing an excellent job in their current positions, but this does not indicate that they will be effective at the next level. Many employees that are effective in their current positions fail as managers and supervisors.

Another common reason people are promoted is because they have learned to build rapport with their patrons and the community they service. Being well liked is not a solid reason to promote someone. Certainly if the employee has the required skills and profile to be an effective manager they should be considered for the promotion. However, it seems that too many owners and managers promote people because they like the person. Remember this person will now represent your company culture and is charged with driving sales and connecting with the owner’s vision for growth in the business.

The problem in hiring and promoting employees is that gut feelings and subjective criteria are too often used in judging whether someone can move into a management role and be effective. When promoting employees, they should be taken through a rigorous process to determine their chances for success in a management position. The employee should be expected to interview with top management and should be put through the paces to evaluate behavioral tendencies that will give some indication about how they will handle various management situations. And the employee should be tested and assessed to determine the degree to which they match the profile of a manager.

So the question is simple: When does it make sense to promote from within? It only makes sense when an employee has the ability to manage effectively. This means that all of your personal feelings about employees must be shelved when making promotional decisions. It means that unless an employee is an excellent fit for the job they shouldn’t be considered for the promotion. Keep up the good work!

f attendees came to the Bronner Bros. International Hair and Beauty Mid-Winter 2012 Show expecting anything less than a high-energy, entertaining showcase of the newest hair fashions and hottest industry trends, they were in for quite a surprise. Upon entering the Georgia World Congress Center and stepping foot on the escalator leading toward the show floor the abundance of style, confidence and excitement held within the event was impossible to miss.

As in years past, the show weekend—in this case February 18-21—was a time for manufacturers to share their product visions, hairstylists to flaunt their skills in creating magnificent styles, and visitors to collect ideas and tools to take back with them. Pride was among the emotions filling the air of the show, not just for the new releases or fashions, but for individuality and self-expression. It’s this passion that fuels such an entertaining, inspiring and successful show.

Celebrating its 65th anniversary, Bronner Bros. once again stayed true to its reputation of orchestrating the largest beauty and trade show of its kind in the world. The company reports that the show occupies over 350,000 square feet in exhibit space. It also continues to attract over 60,000 participants, 300 exhibitors, 500 distributors and produces an alluring hair and barber battle after all these years.

Throughout the four-day trade show an array of events took place. In addition to the excitementpacked trade show floor providing entertainment all its own, visitors could attend the Icon awards, a

뉴스거리 조지아 협회 조지아 협회는 지난 3월 18일, 조지아주 노크로스시에 위치 한 North Atlanta Trade Center에서 제 5회 조지아 트레이드 쇼를 성공적으로 유치 하였다. 지난 2년간 동남부 최대의 쇼 로 발돋움한 조지아 트레이드 쇼에는 작년보다 더욱 많은 인 파들이 모여들어 쇼의 핵심이랄 수 있는 활발한 제품구매활동 이 이루어 졌고, 철저한 사전준비로 인해 예년의 쇼보다 더욱 성숙한 쇼로 발전 됐음을 한눈에 확인할 수 있었다. 쇼에 대한 자세한 사항은 5월호에서 다룰 예정이다.

NC협회 NC협회는 협회원을 늘리려는 목적의 일환으로 그 동안 그린 스보로에서 2회 모임을 갖고 신규회원들을 확보하였다. 또한, 훼이트빌에도 4월 안으로 지역 모임을 만들 예정이며 이를 통 해 노스캐롤라이나 전 지역의 뷰티인들이 협회 활동에 참여할 수 있는 문을 열어두고자 하고 있다. 현재, 협회가 조사한 바 로는 노스캐롤라이나 주에 100여군데 이상의 한인 뷰티 서플 라이 스토어가 있는 것으로 파악 되었으며, 그들에게 초대장 을 발송할 주소도 확보돼 있다고 한다. 조병성 협회장은 협회 가 보다 광범위한 활동을 하기 위해서는 보다 많은 회원확보 가 수반되어야 한다며, 현재는 협회원들을 늘리는데 주력하고 있다고 전하였다.

SC 협회는 지난 3월 18일 조지아주 둘루스에 위치한 명가원 에서 월례 정기모임을 가졌다. 이번 모임은 협회원들이 조지 아협회 트레이드쇼에 참석한 관계로 조지아주에서 모임을 갖 게 되었다고 한다. 총 30여명이 모인 이날 모임에서는 오는 4 월 15일에 있을 Vivica A Fox Hair의 세미나에 관한 공지 사 항을 전달하였으며, 5월에 있을 야유회 준비사항도 전달 하 였다. 가주협회 가주 뷰티서플라이 협회는 지난 3월19일(월요일) Gardena,CA 장수장에서 3월 정기 임원이사회를 가졌다. 이날 이사회에는 협회 재적이사 15명과 참관협회원 8명이 참석한 가운데 현안 에 대한 의견을 교환하며 토론을 하였다. 주요 안건으로는, 현 재 가장 큰이슈로 떠오른 케미칼제품 도매업체인 C사의 직영 소매업진출에 대한 대책과 이 문제를 주제로 한 공청회 개최 여부를 결정하였고 협회정관 개정을 표결로 확정 지었다. 무 거운 분위기로 시작된 이날 회의에서는 지난 14일 협회대표 4 명과 C업체와의 회담결과보고와 그간의 경과보고가 있었고, 이미 개업한 C업체의 소매점근처에 있는 회원업소대표와 앞

으로 예정될 곳으로 지목된 지역의 회원업소대표가 참관회원 으로 참석하여 의견을 내고 또는 하소연을 하였다. 4월 중순 경 이 사안에 대하여 전체적인 회원업소들의 의견을 듣고 관 련 도매, 제조업체들의 입장을 정리하는 차원에서 공청회를 개최하기로 결정하였고, 도매, 제조업체의 대표들을 공청회에 패널로 초청하여 서로의 의견을 교환하는 자리를 마련하기로 하였다. 또 다른 안건으로는 2월 이사회에서 회장 임기건으로 보류되었던 정관개정이 표결을 통하여 확정되었다. 회장임기 는 종전 1년임기후, 1년연임가능 이었으나, 새로 개정된 정관 은 ‘2년임기후, 1년 유임할 수 있다.’ 로 바뀌었다. 개정된 정 관은 연말총회의 의결을 거쳐 내년부터 발효된다.

뉴욕협회

뉴욕협회는 지난 3월18일(일) 오후 6시30분에 대동연회장에 서 “대 뉴욕 뷰티 서플라이 협회” “제17주년 회원의 밤”을 가졌다. 참석한 267명의 인원들은 약 90여개의 회원업소 및 40개의 유관업체, 직능단체(10개 단체 회장), 그리고 뉴저지 한인 뷰티 서플라이 협회에서 집행부 임원 및 고문들(7명)로 이루어 졌다. 한편 이날 행사에는 예고 없는 1인 피켓 시위 (Kim’s Hair Beauty Supply 김철수 사장)가 벌어졌는데, 업계 의 도매업체에 대한 상도덕에 대한 유감을 나타내고자 시위 를 하였다고 한다.

뉴저지 협회. 뉴저지 협회는 지난 3월 13일 에디슨에 위치한 금호정에서 40여명의 회원들이 모인 가운데 정기 월례회의를 가졌다. 이 날 모임에서는 센세이션널사에서 신제품에 대한 제품 세미나 가 열렸다고 한다. 저녁식사를 곁들인 세미나가 끝난 후 열린 월례회의에서는 오는 6월 24일에 있을 협회 야유회 겸 족구 대회에 관한 준비상황을 논의 하였다. 이번 족구 대회에는 협 회원들과 도매상 관계자들이 모두 참석하여 함께 화합할 수 있는 자리를 마련하고자 하는 취지라고 한다. 김영중 협회장 은, 도매상과 소매상은 가장 가까우면서도 쉽게 서로 소통할 기회가 별로 없어, 이러한 자리를 통해 상호간의 유대관계를 돈독히 하여 서로의 입장을 좀더 이해할 수 있는 계기를 만들 고자 함이라 한다. 이에 도, 소매상 측 모두 반기는 분위기라 전하였다.

클리브랜드 협회 클리브랜드 협회는 지난 2월 21일 17명이 참석한 가운데 정기 월례모임을 가졌다. 저녁 8시에 미가식당에서 모인 이날 모임 에서는 NBSDA 중앙협회 연락사항 전달 및 공동구매 사항에 대해 논의 되었다고 한다.

뉴스거리 먹어도 먹어도 배고픈 이유, 뇌세포 때문 배 불러도 계속 먹는 이유는? 비만을 유도 하는 끊임없는 음식섭취가 특정한 유전자 로부터 기인한다는 연구결과가 나왔다. 미 국 조지타운대학 메디컬센터의 바오키 쉬 박사 연구팀이 `뇌유래 신경영양인자(Brain Derived Neurotropic Factor, BDNF)`의 변 화를 연구한 결과, BDNF가 비만에 끼치는 영향을 밝혀냈다고 영국 데일리메일이 보

도했다. BDNF는 우리가 음식을 섭취하고 난 후 `렙틴`과 `인슐린`이 뇌세포를 통해 시 상하부로 “배가 부르다”는 신호를 보내 식 욕을 억제하는 역할을 한다. 그러나 이 유전 자가 변이되면 체내 의사소통을 막아 식욕 억제를 하지 못하기 때문에, 결국 비만과 과 식을 부르는 것이다. 연구팀은 “이 유전자 는 `짧은` BDNF와 `긴`BDNF가 따로 존재 한다”며 “긴 BDNF를 가진 사람의 경우 음 식을 그만 먹어도 된다는 신호가 정상적으

로 뇌에 전달되지만, 짧은 BDNF의 경우 이 같은 신호를 받지 못한다”고 밝혔다. 이어 “유전자가 변형됨에 따라 음식 섭취량이 2 배 이상 차이가 난다”며 “이같이 길고 짧은 것은 태아가 자궁에 있는 초기 단계에 형성 된다”고 덧붙였다. 하지만, 이 유전자가 어 떤 상황에서 변형되는지 아직 확실하게 밝 혀진 바 없다. 전문가들은 이번 연구 결과 가 몸무게를 조절하는 뇌 신호를 연구하는 데 큰 도움이 될 것으로 기대했다.

아이팟 등 전자 장비들에 전달된다. 조깅 할 때나 취침시에 사용하면 간편하다. 기기 는 브라질에 거주하는 조코 파울로 라모길 라가 발명했다. 그는 데일리메일과의 인터 뷰에서 “에너지를 절약하며 환경보존에 기 여하고, 또한 운동할 수 있는 동기가 되기 도 할 것”이라며 “이 제품이 생산으로 이어 져 탄소발자국 경감에도 도움이 됐으면 한 다”고 말했다.

명당 연간 추가로 한 명 가량이 더 사망하는 것으로 이번 연구결과 나타났으며 또한 수 면제를 복용한 남성들이 여성들 보다 사망 위험이 2배 가량 높은 것으로 나타났다. 연 구팀은 “이번 연구가 널리 처방되는 약물인 졸피뎀(zolpidem)과 마제팜(Temazepam) 을 포함한 장 널리 사용되는 수면제 8종이 사망 위험과 암 위험을 높이는 것과 연관 이 있음을 보인 최초의 연구이다”라고 밝 혔다. “이전에는 이 같은 약물들은 작용 시 간이 짧아 다른 수면제 보다 안전한 것으로 생각되어 왔지만 이번 연구결과 대개 흔히 대체되는 구형 제제와 추가적 사망 위험에 서 별 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났다.”라고 연구팀은 밝혔다.

뚱뚱한 사람 수면제 복용시 사망률 상승 비만이 수면제 복용과 연관된 사망 위험 을 크게 높이는 것으로 나타났다. Jackson Hole 예방의학센터 연구팀이 ‘BMJ Open’ 지에 밝힌 4만명 가량을 대상으로 한 연구 결과에 의하면 비만인 사람의 경우 연간 18 알 이하 수면제를 처방받은 사람조차도 사 망율은 거의 2배 가까이 높아지는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 이 같은 수면제 복용과 사 망 위험간 연관성은 18-54세 연령의 사람 에서도 상대적으로 높은 것으로 나타났다. 연구팀은 “비만인 사람들이 수면무호흡을 앓고 있는 경우가 많아 이로 인해 수면제 복용시 사망 위험이 더욱 높아질 수 있다”
