o you’re getting ready to go on a vacation, or perhaps you have to catch a red-eye for a quick business trip. Whatever the reason, if you’re getting on an airplane, it’s time to double-down on your skin care. There are simple steps you can take pre, during, and post-flight so that whether it is for business or pleasure, your skin lets you put your best face forward. 1. Pre-Pack – Avoid the last-minute scramble trying to get your favorite lotion into one of those little bottles. Keep a pre-packed, TSA compliant beauty bag at home stocked with the essentials: face cleanser, moisturizer and travel-size versions of your regular makeup. 2. Go bare – Give your skin a breather while flying. Instead, break out your beauty bag and apply light makeup when you arrive at your destination. If going completely bare seems too daring, apply an oil-free moisturizer, a light lip gloss and a good blemish base before your flight. Try a lip product such as Neutrogena Naturals Lip Balm to keep your lips moist. But, definitely skip foundation, eye makeup and the rest of the works so they are not sitting on your skin throughout your flight. 3. Bring Your Own Pillowcase – Reduce your exposure to bacteria and allergens on the plane. Pack a pillowcase in your carry-on and use it. Also, pack a light shawl that you can use instead of the airplane blanket. Use anti-bacterial wipes on tray tables, as well as on the phone and remote control when you get to your hotel room.

4. Choose Liquids Wisely – Avoid or limit caffeine and alcohol. Sip green tea, mineral water or plain water without ice instead. If you can’t resist coffee or a glass of wine, make sure to “pre-drink” an equal amount of water to keep your skin hydrated and healthy. 5. Moisturize and Refresh – Pack a multi-tasking product such as Aquaphor and apply it to your lips, nostrils and cuticles to combat dry, germ-filled air that recirculates in the airplane cabin. Consider packing a small washcloth in a baggie so you can dip it in bottled water to refresh your face. 6. Pack Your Own Food – Skip the salted chips and other junk-food snacks that can play havoc with your skin. Instead, bring your own healthy snacks; apples, carrots, sliced turkey, low-fat cheese or unsalted nuts, for instance. 7. Finally, don’t forget the SPF 30 sunscreen – Whether you are headed for the beach, the ski slope, or planning to stroll the boulevards of Paris, you are going to need it. Travel can be stressful and hard on the skin, but a few precautions can help you stay on track.

How should you sell it?

This month’s focus is...

Preparing your Skin for Summer. Summer is here and that means it is time to break out the shorts and tank tops!

To make sure skin is summer-ready we are giving you some African American skin care tips on how to prepare one’s skin for this summer! “Stay hydrated. H2O is a necessary best friend in the upcoming summer months. Of course it is important to stay hydrated all year long, but the intense heat calls for even more water intake. Water can help minimize dry skin and peeling that occurs as a result of sun exposure. The more you drink, the less dry your skin will be. Water will also help give the skin a luminescent glow. As you increase your water intake, your skin will start to have a new radiance. To make it easier to drink more water, suggest to your customers to get a reusable water bottle that they can carry around. That way, it will be easier to stay hydrated throughout the day. A lot of people find that infusing water with different fruits and vegetables makes the water more refreshing. For example, drop a few blueberries, lemon slices, and ice cubes in the water bottle. Not only will it give your water a nice hint of flavor, you will also consume the nutrients from the blueberries and lemon! Avoid ingrown hairs. Warmer weather means we are probably going to be showing more skin, which means you may find yourself picking up the shaving razor more often. However, we know that shaving can lead to ingrown hairs and dark spots. For the best summer skin, make sure to exfoliate on a regular basis to avoid those two unsightly problems. The Clear Essence Complexion Soap with AHA is the type of Black skincare product that exfoliates and rejuvenates the skin on daily basis. Another way to beat razor bumps is to change your hair removal method. Ingrown hairs are most common after shaving. There are a multitude of different methods that work well to remove body hair, so try something new to see your summer skin glow. One of the best ways to remove hair in the summer is with hair removal crèmes. With these types of products, you will have a smaller chance of developing ingrown hairs and your skin will be smoother for longer.” Ayanna is a 3rd year Media and Cultural Studies student at University of Riverside.

for Your Aging Skin What is Jojoba Oil? • Jojoba grows in abundance in Mexico, Southwestern US, Australia, Israel and South America. The transparent yellow oil is nontoxic in its pure form and is used largely for cosmetic purposes. It is a popular ingredient in many anti-aging creams and skin care products. • Jojoba oil is obtained from the extract of seeds of the jojoba tree. It is actually a wax ester or liquid wax and not oil. It came into prominence when killing of whales for commercial use was banned. The properties of jojoba oil are the same as the oil derived from the sperm whale. • Jojoba oil resembles the sebum of your own skin and pronounced as “ho-ho-ba.” Jojoba oil is suitable for all the skin types and works as a superb moisturizer. It is non-comedogenic and thus, unclogs the pores and frees the skin from impurities. Components of Jojoba Oil • Jojoba oil includes stearic, oleic, linoleic, linolenic, palmitic, palmitoleic and fatty acids. It also contains myristic acid that exhibits anti-inflammatory action. • Jojoba oil contains several vital nutrients including B com34

OTC Beauty Magazine June 2015

plex vitamins, vitamin E, and the minerals zinc, copper and chromium. It is rich in iodine that effectively fights against fungal and bacterial infection. Jojoba oil has traditionally been used to cure acne, canker sores, warts and athlete’s foot. Dermatological Tests of Jojoba Oil • The Japanese conducted certain research on Jojoba oil and found it to be nontoxic to the human skin. Other dermatological tests indicate that jojoba oil increases the suppleness of the skin and softens and smoothes fine lines and wrinkles. • Tests confirmed that most common skin bacteria and fungi have been killed in jojoba oil. It was found that jojoba oil destroys the bacteria pseudomonas and staphylococcus within a few hours. Benefits of Jojoba Oil for Your Skin • Jojoba oil is amazing for the individuals who suffer from sensitive skin conditions, including eczema and psoriasis. The chemical composition of jojoba oil closely resembles the natural sebum of the skin and it blends well with the sebum and rarely causes allergic reactions to even the most sensitive individuals. • Jojoba oil is composed of liquid wax esters. Wax esters are also present in the natural sebum produced by the body, which acts as an environmental barrier and a natural moisturizer. As we age, the production of wax ester also decreases and makes the skin

dull and wrinkled. The application of jojoba oil on the skin acts as a wax ester and makes the skin healthy. • Jojoba oil works as a moisturizer since it quickly penetrates into the skin and works wonders for sensitive and dry skin. It does not evaporate like water based moisturizers. A mild application of jojoba oil reduces the loss of water from the skin epidermis and keeps the skin plump and healthy. This reduces and prevents the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. Jojoba oil is very stable and does not get rancid or lose antioxidants even after long periods of storage. • Jojoba oil is useful in treating acne, pimples and other skin disorders. Applications of jojoba oil forms a thin and non-greasy layer on the skin and help soften it. It effectively heals flare ups and clears acne since the antibacterial properties of jojoba oil inhibits the growth of acne-causing bacteria. Natural jojoba oil is very effective for your skin. Say Bon Voyage to Bad Skin

T

his winter has proven to be one of the worst in years and we couldn’t be more excited to be enjoying summer. From relentless snow to icy roads, many people traded frigid temps for warmer climates. However, traveling puts additional stress on you and your skin. Regardless of whether you are traveling by car or plane, for business or pleasure, New York & New Jersey board certified dermatologist Dr. Rebecca Baxt’s must-know skin travel tips will help make your time away more relaxing and leave your skin rosy on arrival. For Frequent Flyers. The re-circulated air on planes is five times drier than the desert and the lack of humidity causes loss of moisturizer. The air inside the cabin of a plane usually has a humidity level of 10 to 20 percent—much lower than a comfortable typical indoor humidity of 30 to 65 percent. All of which combines to equal skin desperately in need of moisture. “Most people realize that flying can cause skin to dry out and breakout, but they may not know why,” says Dr. Baxt. “Whenever the environment is moisture-free such as with recirculated air in a plane cabin—the air actually draws moisture from wherever it can, including the skin. Dry skin will tend to get drier and oily skin will get even oilier to compensate for dehydration.” Dr. Baxt recommends the following travel itinerary for your skin whether you’re taking a quick weekend getaway or going for the long haul. Un-Happy Hour. Don’t drink alcohol on the plane. “Alcohol is very dehydrating. While it may help to relax you if you’re nervous about flying, the effect of alcohol will be dry skin,” says Dr. Baxt. “Drink water, and read a magazine or book or bring along your iPod. Having something to distract you will help you as much, if not more than a glass of wine. If you just can’t pass it up, drink lots of water afterward.” Bring a Hydrating Mist for In-Flight Treatment. A hydrating mist is perfect for in-flight application. Dr. Baxt recommends spraying a couple of pumps onto your face for instant hydration. It also feels great and helps cool you down if you’re on a warm airplane.

Skip the Salty Snacks. Airport food is not very skin-friendly. “While peanuts and pretzels may look delicious, salt can cause swelling,” warns Dr. Baxt. “Instead, snack on fruits and vegetables like carrots and apples, which are filled with water.”

It’s Time to Takeoff...Your Makeup! If you wear makeup, keep it to a minimum on the flight. “Airplane air is dry and can exacerbate your makeup’s drying-out effects on your skin, which can lead to breakouts and your pores becoming clogged on the flight,” says Dr. Baxt. “Opt for tinted moisturizer if you cannot bear not having any make-up on; and use lip balm in lieu of lipstick as the cabin air is dry, lips tends to feel a little drier while on the flight.”

Puffy Eyes. Jet lag always shows through your skin, but mostly in the eyes. Lack of sleep due to possible time changes can have you looking sleepy and puffy. Don’t forget to stash an eye cream that contains caffeine for that quick “pick-me-up” if needed. Another option? “Carry green tea bags with you on the plane,” says Dr. Baxt. “A half hour before landing, ask the flight attendant for hot water and soak a few minutes. Add ice to cool down the bags, and apply cool green tea bags to your eyelids before landing. The green tea has antioxidants and anti-inflammatories to decrease puffiness so you’ll look your best when you land.”

June 2015 OTC Beauty Magazine

K-t-K Your Travel Beauty Bag: What to Pack. With the ever-changing airline baggage regulations and costly baggage fees, it’s important to have a checklist of the essential skincare products you need when traveling. “If you’re headed on a trip, you can’t bring every makeup, skincare and hair care product from your bathroom,” says Dr. Baxt. “Plan ahead and pack smart when traveling.” Weather-Proof Your Skincare Products. Pick and pack skin products based on the climate of your destination. “For snowbirds, when going to a warm, humid destination, pay extra attention to exfoliation in order to reduce the dead skin cells trapped by excess moisture, and pack a cleanser with salicylic acid,” suggests Dr. Baxt. If Aspen or Vail is your destination, it’s all about deep moisture when it comes to locations that have low temperatures and high altitudes. “To function properly, the epidermis needs to maintain a certain moisture level; in the winter, low temperatures, low humidity and strong wind deplete skin of its natural protective barrier, allowing that level to drop,” says Dr. Baxt. And wherever you’re going, remember one last tip: sunscreen should be the first thing you throw in your bag. Hotel Beauty Products: Checking In or Out? People often breakout when they are on vacation because hotel products are typically made for people with normal to dry skin. In lieu of using hotel toiletries while traveling, consider packing a few key essentials in your travel beauty bag. “Hotel soaps can be very drying and overly scented,” warns Dr. Baxt. “Beware if you have sensitive skin and remember to bring your own toiletries.”

The body consists of a large amount of water. Therefore, it is crucial in maintaining healthy skin throughout the year. During the different seasons of the year, the skin will go through changes. When it is cold, some people tend to have drier skin because of the lack of moisture in the air and the degree of wind flowing. When it is hot, some people tend to perspire and excrete moisture needed in the skin. When this happens, water is needed to restore it. Discover Skin Identity Identifying the type of skin is important before a skincare regime can begin. There are various types of skin, such as: oily, dry, normal and combination. Oily skin tends to have a “shiny” appearance. The technical term for oil is sebum. People with oily skin tend to have a buildup within the sebaceous glands (oil glands). When this happens, blackheads and oil-filled pimples occur onto the skin. Oily skin can be caused by genetics, by eating greasy foods or the usage of oil-based products. Dry skin tends to have an “ashy” appearance. It tends to flake and peel if not moisturized properly. Dry skin needs to be moisturized in the morning and at night to maintain luster. It needs to be hydrated and moisturized on a regular basis. Dry skin can be caused by products that are too harsh and strip the natural oils from the top layer of skin. The weather plays a crucial role in whether the skin is dry and not. Not drinking enough water is another major reason for dryness. Normal skin maintains the right amount of potential hydrogen (pH) needed to keep the skin balanced. Normal skin looks and feels healthy. The skin is free from acne and pimples, and maintains the proper amount of luster to give it a natural glow.

A combination skin type consists of dryness in some areas and oiliness in others. This skin type can be somewhat difficult to combat. Products are needed for the dryness and the oiliness. Most of the oiliness will appear in an area some call the “T-Zone.” This is the area across the forehead, down the bridge of the nose and sometimes in the chin area. Many have heard the expression from women, “I’m going to powder my nose,” which has been coined from the nose being a “shiny” area due to oil accumulation over a period of time. There is not a known cause for combination skin types. Therefore, it is important to identify the type of skin before treating it.

Why Does Skin Type Matter? If acne, rosacea and other skin conditions are a problem, the skin type has to be identified before applying products. If not, a product can do more damage or make a current condition worse. For example, applying oil-based products on oily skin will cause the sebaceous glands to become overactive. The glands will store as much oil as possible and if unattended, it will turn into a blackhead. Or, it can cause a rise in the skin which resembles a knot and it feels really hard. When this happens, a medical physician has to treat it or drain it. If it is drained, there will be a release of very bad odor and it will have to be covered or stitched, if a large incision is made into the skin. Therefore, it is very important to know your skin type, treat it accordingly, and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

n my previous article, I urged our OTC store owners to remove their window-covering posters and in this article, I will go further and explain why this will benefit your store and how you can utilize your windows. I will give you tips on how to create window displays to increase your sales and I will show examples of how national retail chains are currently doing this in America. It is important to know that these national retail chain stores spend billions of dollars on advertising companies and firms who specialize in “turning heads” and attracting consumers into their stores. We need to understand that when a consumer walks into the store, it is the equivalent to having dollars coming to your register. The question is: “How do we attract consumers into our store without spending a lot of money?” Utilizing window space and window displays is often disregarded and overlooked in our industry. This is a huge mistake. Your storefront is your biggest asset in gaining new customers! It gives you an opportunity to

express to consumers what is special about your store and what you are doing differently than your competitor. Just like how an attractive booth draws retailers at trade shows, the same philosophy can attract, engage, and motivate customers to enter your store and make a purchase. With e-commerce growing daily, it is critical for brick and mortar stores to “step up their game” and evolve with visual merchandising. Be creative and be different, because your retail space can be your most valuable salesperson. It’s not enough to display a “We’re Open” sign; store owners must become more dynamic and communicate with colors, products, and informative signs. It’s all about stimulation and sensory experiences – this attracts positive attention, if done correctly. Again, this does not need to be expensive, it just needs to be effective.

What makes an effective window display? Here are some tips: off key pieces of merchandise; not just what 1Show customers need, but what they desire.

Have a picture of one of your best selling items without any prices or show a picture of new products.

it so customers can look into your store – do not 2Create cover all your windows; customers want to look inside your store and people attract people.

In order to stay relevant, brick and mortar stores must use visual merchandising inside and outside your store to attract new customers.

inspiration and do your research: know your 6Find customers, display beauty trends, reflect the season/ holiday, etc.

This is the most important tip because in order for you to have a great effective sign on your window, you need to know the demographics of the people within the five miles of your store very well. Once you know the population percentage of African Americans, Hispanics, Caucasians, and others, you will know what message you need to display on your window space. Being seasonal and keeping up with trends is also very important and this is something that will make your store stand out among the rest. In order to increase your sales without lowering your margins, you need to push beyond everyone’s expectations. Yes, creating an effective window display will take some level of energy and creativity, but it is necessary for growth. I read somewhere that if you write a list of all the things you need to do tomorrow, you are better than 95% of the people around you. If you accomplish all the things on your note, you are better than 98%. If you accomplished everything on your list and added more tasks the same day, you are considered a superstar in any type of work or profession you are in! In order to be successful, it starts with a simple list. If you really want to become something and make a difference in your life, everything starts and ends with you. A Change in Thinking Can Lead to a Change in Behavior and Results Hard times that sap your energy and leave you frustrated are an inevitable part of life. Maybe you lost a job. Maybe your finances took a turn for the worse. Maybe your personal life is in disarray or a health problem emerged forcing a lifestyle change. Such setbacks can leave people feeling afraid, uncertain, angry or unsatisfied. Overcoming those emotions comes down to a person’s mindset and perspective, as I describe in my book, “Win-Ability, Navigating through Life’s Challenges with a Winning Attitude,” (www.darlenehunter.com). Your attitude is a critical factor that can either hold you back or help you move forward. Everyone needs to take the time to do a pulse check on where they are in their thinking. Is it positive or negative? A positive attitude comes easily when life is rosy. The real trick is persevering when things go awry so you can continue to strive toward your goals. The important thing to remember is that we cannot give up just because things do not work out the way we want. We must be persistent and press our way through to the end. Here are five tips that can help change your thinking, which in turn will change your behavior and, ultimately, change your results. • Be a planner. To live your dream you need to know what you want and have a plan for getting there. Planning your day, week and month are critical ingredients to living your dream and purpose. The “how” and “why” elements are important factors in planning, as they guide you in the direction you want to go. • Be goal oriented. Once you set goals, the next step is to work on completing them. That’s why it’s important to set goals you can accomplish. Each time you can check a goal off your list, you are one step closer to what you ultimately want to achieve. The sense of accomplishment that comes from reaching even the smallest goals will help you keep moving and striving to get your desired end.

Business Tips

We must be persistent and press our way through to the end.

• Be driven for results. When you are driven you have a compulsive and urgent desire to accomplish what you are seeking, whether it’s a bonus, a promotion, additional knowledge in a particular area or some other goal. The important factor is to always know what you are seeking. Results-driven people focus on meeting objectives and delivering on the goals they set. • Have a winning attitude. You must be determined, dedicated and devoted to succeed. You should never give up on your goals and dreams simply because something goes wrong or you are not getting where you hoped to be fast enough.

• Be focused. When you are focused, you have a clear perception and understanding of what you want to accomplish and where you need to go to get there. Think about long-distance runners who will run a 26-mile marathon. They find their pace and then they stay with it. They may get weary and tired, but they find their zone and stay focused and concentrate on what is needed to get to the end.

Plenty of stories can be told about people who failed in the beginning, but made it to the top of their profession because they did not give up after being told they weren’t good enough. The ability to keep trying and pushing no matter how many failures or obstacles you hit is the power of perseverance and is what ‘Win-Ability’ is all about.

Styling Tools by Rocio Urquidi

Love at First Crimp Pull out the memory boxes from your closets and visit the big-hair days when shirts were baggy, caps were skewed and the Fresh Prince was still fresh. It’s time to dust off what was once a fashion staple of every girl’s vanity top: the long-forgotten hair crimper. Yes, that saw-toothed fashion accessory is back from its Valley Girl days and now thriving in the instant world of hashtags, posts and selfies. The crimping emergence was first noted three years ago at a series of catwalk shows—including the Oscar de la Renta and Costume National 2012 extravaganza—and the phenomenon continues. We’re nearly midway through 2015 and a growing list of Hollywood’s top women, including Tyra Banks and Rihanna, are flaunting the signature zig-zags of the crimper at photo shoots, galas and red carpets. Hair Crimping is Back! Most women like enough volume in their hair that will give their look more style. Two ways to achieve this caliber of volume are teasing and a texturizing iron, also known as a crimping iron. The problem with these methods is that teasing damages your hair and texturizing irons are good for one style before your hair needs to be washed. Using the wrong iron with the wrong amount of heat for your hair type can also damage your hair. Use the Right Styling Tools! We recommend that you use professional tools that are designed with more stringent engineering requirements that better protect your hair from heat and damage. Lower quality tools may save you a few dollars, but they have the tendency to break down or burn your hair. Investing in a professional tool will give you the benefit of a longer lifetime and best styling results. For those looking to join the crimping style, we offer some suggestions. A great choice is the Gold ’N Hot Ceramic Crimping/Texturizing Iron, which can crimp any hair type and quickly heats up to 450 degrees with a rheostat control. The ceramic plates ensure your hair will not only be full of texture, but free from damage. The

lightweight and compact design will fit your hand properly without hurting your wrist after using it for a longer period of time. The iron is available in two different sizes—1” for tight, micro crimps and 2” for looser crimps. Crimp It Up Women enjoy looking beautiful and feeling attractive. Play up your hair! Don’t feel like you are limited in style choices when crimping! The beautiful textures of ethnic hair are ideal matches for the sassy style of crimping. From crimped highlights drawn into a playful ponytail, to a full mane of billowy angelic tufts, the crimping repertoire is limited only by your imagination. The online fashion world is full of YouTube videos and helpful sites that can give you head-turning crimping styles for any occasion. Today’s crimped styles have a softer feel than the “electrified” frizz of early crimpers. More natural-looking texture, body and volume provide a sophisticated look that makes crimped styles suitable for high-end elegance. When you think of crimping, it’s perfectly suitable now to also think of the traditional updos of weddings, gala events and other formal outings. If you embrace and explore all of its styling possibilities, and invest in professional salon tools, your journey will be a rewarding one. Hairstyles are only limited by a woman’s imagination. Remember, your hair is worth every penny. Please share on our social media sites a picture of your crimped hair proving that the style we all loved a few years ago is becoming hot again! Skip the side effects of toxins, and go straight for healthy, glowing skin . Our skin is our body’s largest and fastest-growing organ, and studies show that it absorbs up to 60 percent or more of what’s put onto it…think topical treatments for various conditions as well as birth control and nicotine patches. Therefore, we know that absorption through the skin is a proven method to reach the bloodstream. What many of us don’t know is that our personal care and cosmetic products may be loaded with harmful toxins, leading to possible health concerns and leaving scars behind that are more than just skin deep.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) states that “with the exception

of color additives and a few prohibited substances, cosmetics companies may use any ingredient or raw material in their products without government review or approval.” More than 12,500 chemicals are used to make cosmetics and personal care products, and the vast majority of them have not been tested for safety while the law that governs cosmetics hasn’t been updated since 1938. Alarming, right? In a typical day, you might be exposed to over 200 different chemicals, many of which are suspected of having links to cancer or hormone disruptors. “Chemicals linked to cancer have no place in anyone’s beauty routine,” says Janet Nudelman, director of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. “Even low levels of cancer chemicals can add up to real harm and contribute to a woman’s breast cancer risk, especially when they are found in multiple products she uses every day.”

So what’s a gal or guy to do? Get empowered by reading your ingredient labels and knowing exactly what’s in your products. Today, the natural products industry is at new heights with the amount of high-quality products available to solve your skincare needs. Believe me, I know. I’ve been doing this for 14 years

and have managed to achieve healthy, glowing skin naturally and organically. The skin on our face is what we and others see first so it’s important we feel confident about how it looks and what we’re putting on it.

The best part? Safe, effective, natural skincare can also be

budget-friendly. Try JĀSÖN® Vitamin E Oil to help fight lines, wrinkles and scarring; to cleanse and exfoliate, try Alba Botanica® Good & Clean Daily Detox Foaming Cleanser or Avalon Organics® Lavender Luminosity Exfoliating Enzyme Scrub. *This article is sponsored by The Hain Celestial Group, Inc.

Skin Care

FINDING A BETTER WAY TO BEAUTY

with RAW SHEA BUTTER It’s no secret that consumers seek natural ingredients when they make personal care purchase decisions. The focus on sustainable practices and responsible sourcing has never been stronger. One of the best loved (and best performing) ingredients to fulfill these consumer demands is Shea butter. It’s a good time to take a closer look at this natural, hair and skin-friendly ingredient. The Shea sector has nearly doubled in the last decade, with approximately 90% of the harvested raw material used in food/confections and 10% for cosmetics. With the majority of Shea (Butyrospermum Parkii) grown in the 21 countries of the Western African savannah, this growing industry helps empower and employ over 16 million women. Shea plays a crucial socio-economic role in these rural areas as the fruit is gathered from the bush exclusively by women, and is anecdotally referred to as “Women’s Gold” as many rely on the crop for income independence, and to help provide for their families’ education/healthcare. Shea trees grow wild in the savannah and can live for hundreds of years. Each tree produces an average of 30-40 lbs. of fruit each year. To obtain the butter used in products like Palmer’s Shea Formula products, the fruit is gathered during the harvest season of May to August once it has fallen to the ground, ensuring maturity. What isn’t harvested for local use (including food, personal care and cultural activities) is then processed in several stages by the women in the community. The fruit is rid of its pulp, which is used as a sweet edible treat enjoyed especially by children. The Shea nuts are then boiled, dried in the sun and shelled. The resulting kernels obtained are then re-dried in the sun before being sold for their butter. KEY FACTS ABOUT SHEA • The Shea (Karité) tree is commonly known as the Tree of Life for its ability to survive and provide • The Shea tree can grow up to 20 meters (66’) tall and reaches its maximum production capacity after 35 years • The harvest season lasts from May to August • Shea butter is exclusively harvested by the women of the communities • The Shea tree can mitigate the effects of climate change by storing carbon, protecting water sources and preventing desertification • Shea trees are fire and drought resistant, and can live for hundreds of years Palmer’s Shea Butter is ethically and sustainably sourced in Burkina Faso, a very fertile part of South West Africa with forests and agri-forestry parks. All of Palmer’s Shea Butter is ethically and sustainably sourced, helping to further ensure the quality of the crop as well as the economic betterment of the women of those communities. 62

Shea butter is a powerhouse ingredient with excellent skin-friendly properties. It contains exceptionally high levels of unsaponifiable matter (Karitene Terpene Alcohol) and Tocopheryl Content which not only act as true skin conditioning agents, but are also loaded with antioxidants to help protect against free radical damage. Palmer’s was one of the first major brands to mass market a Shea Butter line of products, starting in 2001. Recently the line underwent an update of the packaging and formulas, retaining all of the same great characteristics of the original formulas, but with a more natural approach to skin care. All of Palmer’s Shea Formula products are free of parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, gluten or dyes. As consumers become savvier about ingredients, and with instant access to information at their disposal, they demand their brands deliver quality products with natural ingredients. But they also want to see companies taking responsibility to be more conscious of their sourcing and sustainability. That is why it was important that Palmer’s stayed ahead of the curve to ensure that only these raw, naturally sourced ingredients were the stars of our products. In addition to Shea butter, all of the products in the range contain skinhealthy extracts like African Marula, a cold-pressed, highly nutritive oil, which much like Shea butter, is hand harvested by women in mainly Southern Africa. Palmer’s Marula oil is sourced in Namibia and Swaziland. Marula oil contains four times the amount of Vitamin C as an orange, packing a nutrient punch of antioxidants. Its natural structure reduces trans-epidermal water loss and helps restore skin’s natural suppleness and elasticity. Considering all the good things that Shea does for skin—neutralizing free radicals, aiding in building collagen and providing protection against photo-aging—it’s no surprise that the indigenous women of this region have long used this secret beauty extract for more radiant, youthful-looking skin. Palmer’s Shea Formula line includes a complete regimen of products including: -Raw Shea Soap - formulated with 100% vegetable base and gentle exfoliating oatmeal -Raw Shea Lotion - for 24 hour moisture and nourishment -Raw Shea Hand Cream - for glove-like protection against dryness and cracking -Raw Shea Balm - for concentrated moisture on drier areas like feet and elbows Find a better way to beauty with Nature’s best ingredients and Palmer’s Raw Shea Formula. Available at mass, drug and beauty supply stores.

Notes From the

Natural Nation by ReGia Davis

SUMMER SKIN SECRETS Keeping skin moisturized and healthy is important all year round, but especially during dreadfully hot, summery months. Summer is all about beautiful sunny days, festivals in the park and lying on the beach. Before your consumers soak up those ultraviolet (UV) rays, make sure you offer them the best products that will protect their skin from sun damage. Great skincare products that should definitely be on your store’s radar this summer are oils. Oils renew the skin while maintaining their natural moisture barriers which is why they are great for renewing sun damaged skin. They offer countless benefits for skin, hair and nails. Suggest to your consumers they try Jamaican Mango and Lime Black Castor Oil (JBCO). Jamaican Mango and Lime Black Castor Oils are powerful, all-purpose soothing oils made from natural health-boosting Jamaican Castor Beans, roasted and ground. These oils are formulated for daily use and can be used on hair, skin, nails and even aromatherapy. It is important that consumers use the best products with the most benefits to protect their skin. After all, skin is the body’s most prominent organ. It warms you up as well as cools you down, which is why according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), one in five Americans will develop some form of skin cancer during their lifetime. Skin cancer affects people of all colors and races. People with lighter skin pigments are at a higher risk. Unfortunately, the sun can be the catalyst for several skin issues such as sunburns, wrinkles, dryness, age spots and skin cancer. Skin is prone to sun damage any time of the year, but it is typically worse in the summer months being that the skin is exposed to the most UV rays. This damage can be prevented by taking a few simple steps.

The Academy of Dermatology recommends following these tips to protect the skin from sun damage and to reduce the risk of skin cancer: 1. Apply sunscreen. When you are going to be outside, apply sunscreen to any parts of your body that will be exposed such as face, ears, hands, neck, feet and lips. Reapply approximately every two hours. 2. Use one ounce of sunscreen. The amount should be no more than the size of your palm. Thoroughly rub the product into the skin. 3. Seek shade. The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. If your shadow is shorter than you are, seek shade. 4. Protect your skin with clothing. When going outside wear a long-sleeved shirt, pants and a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. 5. Don’t forget your Vitamin D. Eat a healthy diet that includes foods that are naturally rich in Vitamin D, or take Vitamin D supplements. 6. Check your skin for signs of skin cancer. Checking your skin and identifying your moles are key to detecting skin cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages. The best advice to give your consumer on protecting skin is to reduce their exposure to the sun’s UV rays. Share with your consumers the benefits of Jamaican Mango and Lime Black Castor Oils and how they help to keep the skin protected year round. They will look forward to their summers, all while achieving radiant and healthy skin.

WH hat is Hyperpigmentation ? -T C T yperpigmentation he auses and reatment

Hyperpigmentation is an unusual darkening of an area or areas of the skin caused by excess melanin production. Melasma, age spots, acne scars or other dark scars and blemishes are common types of hyperpigmentation. The characteristic dark patches can appear on the legs, hands or any other part of the body, but is most common on the face. Melasma, also known as ‘mask of pregnancy’, is caused by excess oestrogen and is often seen in pregnancy or in women taking birth control pills. Melasma will usually disappear after pregnancy or when woman stop taking hormonal contraceptives, but other forms of hyperpigmentation are not so easy to get rid of and a little help is needed to remove the dark marks. Although hyperpigmentation can occur with all skin types, it is commonly seen in those with darker skin tones such as African or South Asian skin. Treatment for hyperpigmentation includes skin lightening creams or soaps, microdermabrasion and laser skin lightening. Another common cause of hyperpigmentation is exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun so adequate protection from the sun should go hand-in-hand with any skin lightening treatment and a high factor sun screen (at least SPF 15) should be worn daily, particularly on the face. In the United States, hydroquinone based creams are the most popular topical treatments for hyperpigmentation and hydroquinone based skin lightening creams are readily available over the counter or by prescription. In Europe, South Africa and throughout most of Asia, it is illegal to sell hydroquinone based products but there are many other effective alternatives available. The suspected risks associated with hydroquinone have led to an increase in demand of alternative skin lightening treatments for hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone. Active ingredients in alternative skin lightening treatments include kojic acid, salicylic acid, glycolic acid and natural ingredients such as lemon juice, Vitamin E, Vitamin C and extracts from Liquorice and Bearberry. Whatever the cause, hyperpigmentation can be distressing, especially when the dark patches appear on the face, and the desire for a smooth and even complexion is strong for people of all skin tones. Hyperpigmentation will fade on its own over several months or years, but safe and effective skin lightening treatments can significantly speed up the process of obtaining a healthy and even complexion.

OTC: How do you stay educated on new trends and what signals the need for new products on the market? SA: We do a few things – One, we ask our customers a lot of questions about what they see happening in the marketplace. Two, we attend trade shows and have great relationships with our manufacturing partners who are able to share their views on what trends are being shaped. Three, because we have an international business, we often watch what is happening in other countries and whether we think it will translate for the American market. We tie all of these observations and insights together to develop our new product pipeline. OTC: What efforts are being taken to ensure excellent customer service to OTC retailers? SA: We are a small team, so face-to-face communication amongst team members is always paramount to ensuring our customers get what they need. OTC: Does Fisk participate in any tradeshows throughout the year? SA: We participate in Cosmoprof North America, Cosmoprof Bolgona, Cosmoprof Hong Kong and Cosmprof Dubai. OTC: What final thoughts would you like to share with OTC readers? SA: We are most excited about our new introduction of our Zuri skin care products!

CLIPPER TIPS

Sponsored by Andis Co.

5 Simple Steps to Bump-Free Shaving Shaving can be an irritating process, literally! Especially for those that have curly hair, yet desire to keep a clean-shaven look. Dry shaving is a great shaving alternative for people who have sensitive skin and develop bumps easily. Here are five simple steps to follow for dry shaving that will help keep men bump-free. Exfoliate Exfoliation insures that the pores on the exposed layers of skin remain clear and free from pore-clogging oil and or debris. Clogged pores prevent hair from growing above the top layer of skin, resulting in bumps from ingrown hairs. Dampen the Skin Dry shaving is an alternative to traditional shaving with foam or soap. It’s considered “dry shaving” because wet products are not used during the process. However, I would still suggest the skin and hair be softened with a moist, hot towel before the dry shaving process. A super-smooth dry shave can be achieved using the Andis Profoil Lithium Shaver, which shaves as close as a razor without the burn or irritation. Determine How Close Shaving too close could be a culprit in causing ingrown hair bumps. Therefore, if a foil shaver is too close for your skin type, a trimmer such as the Andis T-Outliner® would be a great alternative because it will leave a very short stubble that will minimize ingrown hairs. The Andis T-Outliner has been the dry shaver’s personal choice for decades. In addition, the Andis Headliner® is the best alternative for trimming or dry shaving at home. Keep a Routine Consistency with the shaving routine can help men maintain a bump-free complexion. For instance, if the Andis Profoil Lithium Shaver creates the ideal closeness of the desired shave, shaving every two days may work best to keep shaven areas bump-free. If the Andis T-Outliner or Headliner trimmers create the ideal closeness of a shave, shave every three to seven days to prevent ingrown hairs. Protect Your Skin Andis Bump Care® is a perfect exfoliator and skin protector for dry shaving. Bump Care helps remove pore-clogging debris and helps soothe skin irritation. It’s available in 4 oz. and 12 oz. bottles and in convenient pre-moistened wipes. Simply wipe on after shaving to complete your bump-free shaving routine. Kenny “The Professional” Duncan is a National educator for the Andis Co. He has presented classroom demonstrations and platform education at many tradeshows such as Empire Future Professionals, IHS International Hair Show, Bronner Bros International Hair Show and many more. He brings a wealth of information and experience to clipper cutting education. THERAPY TRENDS

FDA Tightens-Up on Wrinkle Claims The US Food and Drug Administration has been putting a wrinkle in recent skin care claims that border drug promises. In an effort to keep companies honest, the FDA periodically sends warning letters. So far this year, several major firms have received a letter. The FDA challenged one manufacturer’s claim to be “clinically proven to change the anatomy of a wrinkle.” Claims that suggest the product retards or controls the aging process or molecule penetration or to physiologically alters a wrinkle or dark spot are suspicious. The FDA wants to limit claims to cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance. Consumers expect more. Most OTC customers are seeking flawless, ageless and spotless skin. Consumers suffer from a range of aging skin, hyperpigmentation, acne and dryness. While a company can never claim to cure an acne condition, revive cells, alter cellulite, or reverse the aging process, these are the claims consumer expect. Several major skin care manufacturers have been warned to craft their claims in such a way that they avoid legal complications. Many products are classified as both a cosmetic and a drug. Such medicated skin products must be approved by the FDA before distribution. Continued FDA concern regarding hydroquinone resulted in blocking melanin-blocking ingredients such as kojic acid, licorice root, and arbutin. A wide array of body butters, known to moisturize and soften, are attempting to claim anti-aging properties. Manufacturers must continue to offer reparative or restorative claims. Their language must be tightened up to suggest ingredients will “help” to repair or restore.

Elayne McClaine has identified and developed emerging domestic and global trends in hair care, skin care and other consumer categories for such firms as Chesebrough-Pond’s, Revlon and Pharmacia (div. of Pfizer). A Unique Shaving Experience Anyone who shaves will experience skin irritation after shaving which is caused by dull razors, dry skin or skin sensitivity. Razor bumps, rash and dry, itching skin are common results from shaving. Your skin is the largest organ on your body, so expose it to quality products such as Moore Unique Ultimate Shaving Solution Package created by Dr. Milton Moore, an expert dermatologist. His products prepare the skin by cleansing it thoroughly; it gives you a close, smooth shave; and lastly, it prevents irritation, bumps and itching caused by improper shaving practices. Always purchase a new quality multi blade razor and Moore Unique Hydro Glide Ascend Shave Gel & Skin Enhancer to reduce irritation to your skin under all conditions. You can reuse a quality razor a few times if you take good care of it. Make sure to wash it after every swipe, clean it with rubbing alcohol to kill all the bacteria for extra precaution. To extend the life of your blades, store your razor in baby oil if possible. By all means, let your hairs soften and stand up by using warm water. The moisture and steam from your bath or shower will cause your hairs to become soft. Remove any ingrown hairs with the Moore Unique Razor Bump Tool prior to shaving. Exfoliate, I say! Men are guilty of skipping this imperative step. In fact, you should exfoliate both before and after you shave. It may seem like a waste of time, but your skin will be smoother and less prone to redness and irritation, and it prevents ingrown hairs. Pick up the Moore Unique Clear Skin & Daily Acne Wash which exfoliates dead skin and cleans pores.Visit www.mooreunique.com to learn more about these great products designed for all ethnicities and skin types.

A first of its kind, the Beauty Pitch offers up-and-coming and established companies alike the unique opportunity to present their brand, products or ideas to a panel of top investors including renowned entrepreneurs Mark Cuban and John Paul DeJoria. Five finalists will have the chance to pitch to the panel live as part of PBA’s Business Forum on July 12, 2015, at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. One winner will receive a one-year mentorship from Mark Cuban and/or another will receive possible funding from a reputable private equity firm. “The Beauty Pitch brings the concept of ABC’s “Shark Tank” to PBA Beauty Week® giving beauty entrepreneurs access to potential financial support and mentoring from acclaimed businessmen,” says PBA Chairman, Scott Buchanan. “We are thrilled to have the support of Mark, JP and the investment community to present this unique

opportunity to the professional beauty industry.” Cuban served as the keynote speaker during PBA’s Business Forum in 2014 but this year’s event will be a first for DeJoria. To kick off the Beauty Pitch, Cuban and DeJoria will share their advice on business practices and answer questions from the audience with Buchanan serving as the moderator. The event will then be followed by the live pitches from the finalists. “I’m thrilled to return to CPNA and PBA Beauty Week® as I have a vested interest in building my industry knowledge to further support the three beauty brands I currently own and mentoring one winning brand from the Beauty Pitch to success,” says Mark Cuban. Ticket registration for PBA’s Business Forum, including the Beauty Pitch is now open ($60 for PBA members, $70 for nonmembers). Ticket prices include a full buffet-style breakfast, which will be served at 7:00 a.m. Cuban and DeJoria will take the stage from 8:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. in the Mandalay Bay Ballroom on July 12, 2015. IndustryNews Cosmoprof North America Announces the Launch of “Discover Scent” Program First-time initiative will debut at the 2015 show in cooperation with Sniffapalooza Cosmoprof North America (CPNA), an award-winning international B2B trade show and one of the largest beauty events in the U.S., has announced the launch of its firstever Discover Scent program. The program is presented in cooperation with Sniffapalooza, an organization that brings together fragrance aficionados and industry heavyweights from around the world. Inspired by close to a decade of success with its exclusive Discover Beauty program, which facilitates one-on-one introductions of innovative beauty brands to forward-thinking retailers, CPNA aims to capitalize on the growing fragrance market by providing emerging fragrance brands with a dedicated outlet to showcase directly to major distributors, retailers and luxury spas as a potentially new channel for market growth. Like its Discover Beauty counterpart, Discover Scent participants will be carefully curated by the CPNA and Sniffapalooza teams. “There is no other event in the US that can give upand-coming fragrance brands the world-class exposure and opportunities that CPNA does,” said Daniela Ciocan, Marketing Director, CPNA. Ciocan is also the brainchild behind the launch of the Discover Beauty platform. “Recognized as a premier international event, CPNA draws in top industry players across all industry sectors providing incredible value and exposure to exhibitors. For Discover Scent participants this means exclusive access and visibility of the highest caliber.”

Sniffapalooza was selected as the preferred partner with which to co-launch Discover Scent due to its extensive Rolodex of fragrance industry insiders and the success created by its founder, Karen Dubin. The organization, which launched in 2002, hosts fragrance-driven events for its members such as brand previews and workshops. Members include brand owners, consumers, perfumers, fragrance houses, fragrance journalists, authors and celebrities. “Sniffapalooza is thrilled to be collaborating with Cosmoprof this year because this show represents everything we love and promote in the beauty and fragrance industries: creativity, innovation and education,” said Dubin. “We’re particularly excited to be curating Discover Scent and giving opportunities to 12 stellar brands to shine and show what makes them special and unique. It’s all about sharing our passion!” Additionally, CPNA has partnered with Air Aroma, a scent design and branding agency specializing in ambient scenting, to create a custom Cosmoprof signature fragrance for the event. “Scent is what’s next in sensory branding for companies that wish to connect with customers and form memorable brand experiences,” said Lori Smith, Creative Director, Air Aroma. “We’re so excited to create a one-of-a-kind fragrance and to associate with the Cosmoprof North America show.” For more information, please visit www.cosmoprofnorthamerica.com.
