So you’ve heard lots of good things about safety razors. You’re even thinking of making the switch from disposable razors. Great choice, but what are all the benefits exactly? We’re glad you asked. Safety razors are durable, reusable metal razors designed to cut facial hair with a single blade. Double-edge razor blades are used with safety razors and are made to be replaced whenever they get dull.
This way of shaving is old-fashioned— the kind of shaving your grandad did. But like many retro things, the users knew what they were doing with them back then, and there is an art and skill involved - especially with safety razors. Check out some of the reasons you should ditch your disposable razors.
While the initial cost of a metal safety razor is more than plastic razors, the double-sided blades are the only thing you need to keep purchasing. Replacement blades are significantly cheaper than the typical plastic razor. The average cost of a basic disposable razor is about $1.30. For safety razors, replacement blades can cost as little as half that price.
Single blade safety razors cut the hair right at the surface level, which gives you a close, comfortable shave. The razor glides smoothly over the skin, helping to reduce any irritation and razor burn considerably.
The tough metal of a safety razor gives them a weighted design, allowing you to apply a natural amount of pressure when shaving. Pressing down on your razor when shaving can lead to an increased risk of razor burn and cuts. With a safety razor, you can let the razor do most of the work for you, achieving a smooth, close shave with a light touch.
Multi-blade disposable razors cut the hair below the surface of your skin. They do this by tugging the hair up and taking off a top layer of your skin each time you shave. Tugging and pulling on the hair on your face and shaving off its top layer can unsurprisingly lead to irritation as well as unsightly razor bumps, which are caused when the hair curls back on itself and grows into the skin instead of straight out through the follicle. The surface-level cut from a safety razor virtually eliminates tug and pull, giving you an excellent close shave while keeping the top layer of your face intact.

People who achieve career success often talk about having had a mentor who guided their career. Whether the mentoring relationship evolves naturally or is planned, it provides a sustained link between the two individuals. Everyone needs help learning new skills and imagining things they could have never conceived of on their own. Yet, there are three other types of people who can profoundly impact your ability to achieve success besides someone who is actively mentoring you. The critical difference is the level of their involvement in your life or career often differs significantly from that of a mentor. Knowing that you can benefit from a broader range of advisors will allow virtually everyone you meet to inspire and guide you.
Coaches go by many names in today’s business world. They can also be consultants, advisors or trainers. Many OTC customers are becoming aware of all the essential beauty tools in salons and at home. Salon stylists and dermatological estheticians are being challenged from both ends. Consumers are circumventing professional services they can plug in at home. OTC retailers should become an essential outlet for the new beauty tools that are infiltrating the marketplace. The beauty appliance market anticipates a growth rate of 5.9% through 2025. Online channels are growing at an even faster rate. Competitively priced beauty appliances are surging in popularity and efficiency.
Heated styling appliances are now bigger, faster and more versatile, remaining the largest segment of the marketplace. Powered with lights and voltage, these wands and dryers are appealing to customers, as well as stylists.
However, most of the innovation is coming from the appliances for skincare. Consumers are seeking those products that deliver beauty at a high-tech level. Some products deliver, dose and dispense. Some products help to penetrate or exfoliate. Many of these tools amplify the benefits of creams and lotions. Antiaging consumers may have found a new electrical fountain of youth. There are FDA-approved products on the market that provide micro-currents for muscle toning and a mini-facelift. Some tools remove blackheads and plump lips. Others can shave eyebrows or give paraffin baths for nails. Many of these items are priced from $10 to $500. This price range contrasts with spending the same amount per visit to a salon or doctor’s office.
OTC retailers should approach these trends from a professional as well as a consumer perspective. The wired beauty movement is moving at the speed of light. Expect a restructure in the professional services market since many clients opt for beauty services just by plugging in.

Cantu Beauty, an award-winning multicultural haircare brand, is teaming up with LA-based nonprofit Gyrl Wonder to support Black and Latina communities by nurturing the next generation of female leaders from curl to toe. Together, the partnership will provide bespoke events, resources and programs designed for ambitious young women of color to help build resilience, self-confidence and mental wellness as they embark on the next phase of their personal and professional journeys.

The terms “clippers” and “trimmers” are often used interchangeably, but they are anything but the same. The most significant differences between the two are the blade sizes and purposes. Think of your clippers for overall cutting while the trimmers are used for detailing areas like the sideburns, lineups, nape of the back and balding hair, said Austin Russo, the co-founder of professional hair appliance companies Gamma+ and Stylecraft. “Clippers are generally designed with wider cutting blades to cut the overall bulk hair, full haircuts, or bulk grooming. They are typically bigger overall than trimmers and have adjustable taper levers. Trimmers are a bit smaller and more effective for detail work and getting very close to the skin.”
